It’s county fair season in Kansas, and while local events are a great way to enjoy the sun and time with friends, heat can be an invisible fun bandit for livestock.

Kansas State University beef extension veterinarian A.J. Tarpoff said it’s important for youth showing livestock to watch animals closely and know the symptoms of heat stress.

All animals – as well as people -- can experience heat stress, which occurs when the body cannot get rid of excessive heat, either through sweating or other means.

Tarpoff said cattle handle heat differently than other animals. In particular, they struggle with the ability to sweat, which makes them reliant on getting rid of heat through their respiratory system, such as breathing the heat out. To preserve energy, they usually dissipate the heat during the night when it's cooler.

“It takes 4-6 hours to return cattle to regular temperature,” Tarpoff said.

He added that one way to tell if a show steer or heifer is affected by heat stress is to look for unusual behavior from that animal. Symptoms may include reduced feed intake, increased time standing and crowding around water. In the show barn, animals may also display an increase in breathing rate.

One way to keep animals cool is to make sure barns get plenty of ventilation. Tarpoff said that heat stress mitigation strategies should be planned with cattle comfort in mind, and each strategy will be unique to the housing situation. Other factors to consider include whether the animal has its winter or summer hair coat; hair color; and past health issues.

Tarpoff said youth should consider reducing animal handling during heat intervals.

“Weighing, processing, sampling and shipping cattle are all necessary tasks but they should be strategically conducted during the very early morning hours to ensure cattle comfort,” Tarpoff said.

Another way to avoid heat stress is to provide plenty of water to cattle. Tarpoff said the amount of water cattle need doubles as the heat increases from 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tarpoff also encourages youth to consider moisture levels from the washing areas. Some locations can artificially increase the humidity and cause unneeded stress on livestock.

“Monitoring conditions and preparing for heat stress is a must when caring for your animals,” he said.

Fair Season Hot Topic: Keeping Animals Cool at County Shows

At its July reorganizational meeting, the USD 305 Board of Education announced a series of impactful decisions aimed at fostering a thriving education community. With a steadfast commitment to excellence, Salina Public Schools (SPS) continues to prioritize the well-being and growth of its staff and students.

Acknowledging the invaluable contributions by school staff, the board approved a 3.57 percent increase to the base salary, along with step movement as allowed under the salary schedules. The average increase for all staff is projected to be 5 percent for 2023-24 school year.

In addition, SPS is proud to announce the employer-paid health contribution was increased by $20 per month, from $520 to $540 per month. And, paid parental leave was increased for all staff groups by five additional days.

“These changes underscore SPS’s unwavering dedication to create the best place to learn and work,” explained Linn Exline, superintendent. “We know that investing in our staff and fostering a supportive workplace helps SPS remain at the forefront of educational excellence.”&nbsp;

For a second year, the board of education approved (at a previous meeting) a retention incentive pay plan for eligible staff in regular, ongoing positions. City of Salina&nbsp; Jerry Ivey Splash Pad is currently unavailable.&nbsp; According to City Staff the pump and motor are being evaluated for a possible repair or replacement.&nbsp; Salina Parks and Recreation Director, Jeff Hammond said City staff should have more information to share by tomorrow.

Hammond apologized for the disruption in splash pad services and thanked the public for their patience.&nbsp;

NWS-Wichita: Severe Storms Possible Wednesday Night

SALINE COUNTY— In a trench 9 feet below the surface, a worker employed by Precision Plumbing LLC was connecting a plumbing line to the municipal sewer in Salina in January when he was buried under dirt and rocks after a trench wall collapsed, according to a report from OSHA.

The company’s foreman entered the trench and tried to dig the worker out. Soon after, he then became buried up to his knees when the trench wall collapsed further. For more than an hour, first responders worked to rescue the two workers. Both survived one of the construction industry’s most serious hazards.

In an investigation by the&nbsp;U.S. Department of Labor’s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.osha.gov/" target="_blank">Occupational Safety and Health Administration</a>,&nbsp;inspectors determined the trench had no protection against cave-ins and the employer allowed soil piles and equipment within 2 feet of the excavation’s edge. OSHA found Precision Plumbing’s violations of these federal trench safety regulations willful.

Inspectors learned that a superintendent with the site’s general contractor, Multicon Inc. — a Wichita-based construction company — had identified the trench collapse hazards to the Precision Plumbing foreman but left the site before making certain the subcontractor corrected the hazard.

“Fortunately, first responders rescued two workers when a 9-foot trench collapsed. This incident is a stark reminder of how soil can shift suddenly and bury a person within seconds,” explained OSHA Area Director Todd Underwood in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp;“Many other workers are less fortunate. In fact, OSHA investigated the deaths of 39 workers in trench collapses in 2022 alone.”

<a href="https://www.dol.gov/sites/dolgov/files/OPA/newsreleases/2023/07/OSHA2023149.pdf" target="_blank">OSHA’s investigation led the agency to issue Precision Plumbing, located in Cheney, two willful and six serious violations with proposed penalties of $333,949.</a>&nbsp;In addition to the willful violations related to the trench collapse, investigators found the company failed to do the following:

OSHA also cited Multicon Inc., the general contractor, for one serious violation for failing to protect employees from cave-in and engulfment hazards. The agency proposed penalties of $14,063.

OSHA has a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/enforcement/directives/CPL-02-00-161_0.pdf" target="_blank">national emphasis program on trenching and excavations</a>.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/publications/trench_safety_tips_card.pdf" target="_blank">Trenching standards require protective systems in trenches deeper than 5 feet</a>, and soil and other materials kept at least 2 feet from the edge of a trench. Additionally, trenches must be inspected by a competent person, be&nbsp;free of standing water and atmospheric hazards and have a safe means of entering and exiting prior to allowing a worker to enter.

Kansas Wheat Commission This is day nine of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest continues to plod along into the second week of July, and farmers who still have wheat left to cut are facing rain delays and hail, leading to a long, drawn-out wheat harvest.&nbsp;

From July 3 to July 9, there were only 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) crop progress report for the week ending July 9, 2023. Harvest is now 59% complete, well behind 93% last year and 84% for the average.&nbsp;

Farmers are balancing a mix of emotions from frustration caused by having to wait for conditions to dry, stress of potential hail and other weather events, with joy from these recent rains.&nbsp;

Northwest of Hays, Eric Werth, General Manager at Golden Belt Coop acknowledges some of the struggles he has seen in Ellis county.&nbsp;

“We are really just waiting for it to dry out around here,” Werth says.

Werth speculates they are about 90% wrapped up with harvest for this year. Another stressor that Werth describes is the amount of weeds that the rain has brought with it.

After a late start on June 21, Werth reports that he is expecting probably 55% of the quantity they have gotten in years past. Yields are averaging around 30 bushels per acre, with some brighter spots getting up to 40 bushels per acre.&nbsp;

“That is definitely not the majority, though,” Werth says. “The [Westbred] Grainfield variety is one that seems to be doing well this year.”

Looking at test weights is encouraging for this area, though, seeing those come in around 62 pounds per bushel. However, proteins have been relatively low this year. He guesses they have taken in about 450,000 bushels so far. He said most of the wheat his elevator receives ends up at flour mills.&nbsp;

Seventeen miles west of the geographical center of the continental United States, Bruce Williams at Trinity Ag in Smith Center says his area has been subject to the rain delays as well.&nbsp;

“The thing that hurt us the most is we’ve basically cut very little since July 4th,” Williams noted. “There has been so much humidity.”&nbsp;

Williams said harvest began on June 24 this year, only four days off from when they usually start cutting, but after these recent rains, harvest has been slow to get back up and running. Having had big days on July 3 and 4, they have not had a single, full week of continuous cutting this harvest.&nbsp;

Initial drought stress caused some decent test weights in earlier loads to the elevator. Test weights were about 60-63 pounds per bushel, but these later storms have caused those numbers to dip into the 58 pound per bushel range.  </figure> Kansas Wheat Commission This is day nine of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.Harvest continues to plod along into the second week of July, and farmers who still have wheat left to cut are facing rain delays and hail, leading to a long, drawn-out wheat harvest.&nbsp;From July 3 to July 9, there were only 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) crop progress report for the week ending July 9, 2023. Harvest is now 59% complete, well behind 93% last year and 84% for the average.&nbsp;Farmers are balancing a mix of emotions from frustration caused by having to wait for conditions to dry, stress of potential hail and other weather events, with joy from these recent rains.&nbsp;Northwest of Hays, Eric Werth, General Manager at Golden Belt Coop acknowledges some of the struggles he has seen in Ellis county.&nbsp;“We are really just waiting for it to dry out around here,” Werth says.Werth speculates they are about 90% wrapped up with harvest for this year. Another stressor that Werth describes is the amount of weeds that the rain has brought with it.After a late start on June 21, Werth reports that he is expecting probably 55% of the quantity they have gotten in years past. Yields are averaging around 30 bushels per acre, with some brighter spots getting up to 40 bushels per acre.&nbsp;“That is definitely not the majority, though,” Werth says. “The [Westbred] Grainfield variety is one that seems to be doing well this year.”Looking at test weights is encouraging for this area, though, seeing those come in around 62 pounds per bushel. However, proteins have been relatively low this year. He guesses they have taken in about 450,000 bushels so far. He said most of the wheat his elevator receives ends up at flour mills.&nbsp;Seventeen miles west of the geographical center of the continental United States, Bruce Williams at Trinity Ag in Smith Center says his area has been subject to the rain delays as well.&nbsp;“The thing that hurt us the most is we’ve basically cut very little since July 4th,” Williams noted. “There has been so much humidity.”&nbsp;Williams said harvest began on June 24 this year, only four days off from when they usually start cutting, but after these recent rains, harvest has been slow to get back up and running. Kansas Wheat: Day 9 Harvest Report

By Monique Koerner KSRE While meat and poultry are popular choices for grilling, the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) reminds us that cooking these foods with intense heat can lead to formation of potential carcinogens. Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) form in meat when its proteins react to the intense heat of the grill. Studies have linked HCAs to development of cancer.

You can modify your grilling technique to reduce the chance of cancer risk. Marinating meat before grilling can decrease formation of HCAs. If you are grilling larger cuts of meat, pre-cook them partially to reduce the time meat is exposed to flame. Trim the fat from meat to reduce flare-ups and charring. Cut meat into smaller portions and mix with vegetables to shorten the cooking time. Another way to minimize cancer risk — grill more veggies!

Grilled vegetables and fruits are delicious, and they are key elements in a healthful diet. The bonus is they don’t form HCAs when cooked, so that cancer risk is eliminated. As you plan cookout meals this summer, include plenty of colorful grilled vegetables and fruits like asparagus, all types of peppers, squash, broccoli, tomatoes, onions, carrots, corn, mushrooms, eggplant, potatoes, mangoes, and pineapple. Even the pickiest eaters will usually enjoy some grilled pineapple! Grilled zucchini is one of my favorites and is a good way to get rid of those extra squash that are so prolific. Or try something new, like grilled lettuce!

Here are basic instructions for grilling veggies and fruit:

· Slice veggies the same thickness so they cook at the same rate.

· Drizzle or brush with olive oil before cooking

· Season simply with a sprinkle of salt, pepper, and any dried herbs you like.

· Grill over medium heat to start. To prevent veggies and fruit from slipping through the grates, lay them crosswise or use a grill basket.

· Close the lid to create the same environment as an oven. Flip halfway through cooking time. More dense vegetables, like peppers and onions, will cook in about 8 to 10 minutes. Squash, eggplant, and asparagus will only require 5 to 7 minutes.

· After removing vegetables and fruit from heat, you can add a splash of balsamic vinegar (flavored varieties add interest) and fresh herbs. Before adding herbs, you may need to add just a bit of olive oil.

One way to add flavor to meals from the grill is with a salsa side. There are so many combinations of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and seasonings to enjoy! So, don’t think of salsa as just a dip with chips. Almost anything savory, salty, meaty, fresh, or slightly sweet is even better with salsa on top: chicken, fish,

steak, pork, lamb, or a baked potato. Top a salad with salsa and sliced chicken, boiled eggs, or tuna and you have a winning meal, especially in the heat of summer. Have you tried cucumber salsa? It is great on a salad!

Another benefit of grilling is cooking outside keeps the heat outside and not in your home. Cooking enough for leftovers during the weekend can help with busy weekdays between work and other activities. Grilling can offer a different flavor which can sometimes encourage family to try new foods. Grilling is easy and convenient so go ahead and try a new fruit or vegetable today!

Promoting community engagement and education about the area's outdoor warning siren system is the impetus of a new program offered by Saline County Emergency Management.

"We are excited about the Adopt A Siren program," said Cundy. "We're asking community groups and volunteers who wish to expand their knowledge of severe weather preparedness to participate in our monthly testing. Groups will be dedicated to one siren within the community. They will have the opportunity to observe and track the effectiveness of their siren and share that information on their social network."

By participating in the Adopt A Siren program, citizens can play a critical role in safeguarding community members against severe weather incidents, emergency management noted in a news release. Adopters will undergo a brief training to learn about the proper functioning of an outdoor warning siren and how to share that information on social media. Adopters are not required to be present at every test of their siren.

Outdoor warning sirens are tested on the first Monday of every month at 4 p.m., weather permitting. The sirens are intended to be heard outdoors and are just one of the layers of warning systems in place to receive weather alerts, emergency management noted.

Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations after a traffic stop on Interstate 135.

Just after 1:38 a.m. Friday, a Salina Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for following too closely and making and unsafe lane change,&nbsp;according to SPD Sergeant Kyle Tonniges.

When conducting the traffic stop the officers smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. They searched the vehicle and located 36.4 pounds of THC oil.

The passenger of the vehicle confessed to purchasing the drugs.&nbsp; Lance Fane, 21, Ind., was&nbsp;arrested for distribution of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2106 Can-Am motorcycle driven by Joseph Peter Jacobs, 74, Virginia Beach, Virginia, was eastbound on Interstate 70 six miles west of Junction City.

The motorcycle left the roadway, entered south ditch, struck an embankment and overturned.

EMS transported Jacobs to Salina Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

A Salina gas station had $6,000 worth of diesel fuel stolen from its tanks last week.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning, at approximately 4 a.m. on July 6, 1,550 gallons of diesel were stolen from the storage tanks at Singh's Travel Plaza, 2124 N. Hedville Road.

Soldan said the owners of the business did not discover the theft had occurred until the morning of July 7. Soldan also said footage obtained from CCTV cameras show a Red Dodge 3500 Ram pickup pulling a gooseneck trailer.&nbsp;

"They pulled up on top of the tank fill for the underground diesel tank and pumped fuel from the underground tank into the tanks on the trailer," Soldan said. "The gooseneck trailer had no plates on it but the truck did have a Florida tag."

Soldan also said the gooseneck trailer contained approximately 8 tote tanks, which were covered with tarp.

Saline County Deputies did discover a trail of diesel leading from the diesel tank, to almost a mile heading east on Interstate 70.&nbsp;

The Saline County Sheriff's Office did attempt to locate the vehicle using the FLOCK system, but was unable to locate the RAM pickup.&nbsp;

$6,000 Worth of Diesel Stolen From Salina Gas Station

A multi-year tennis project has come to fruition.

On Thursday Saline County tennis icons, city commissioners, current tennis players and members of the community gathered at the new Salina Tennis Alliance courts for a Salina Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony.

The 12 court facility,805 The Midway, in Kenwood Park, is on the same grounds as the previous Salina Municipal Swimming Pool and rodeo arena.&nbsp;

The ceremony took place at 5:30 p.m. and was attended by city officials including Commissioners Trent Davis, Bill Longbine, Greg Lenkiewicz and Salina City Manager Mike Schrage. USD 305 Superintendent Linn Exline also attended.&nbsp;

Back in March the city commission passed a resolution to partner with USD 305 and Salina Tennis Alliance in order to build the $2.6 million facility.

Hutton Construction, along with Jones Gillan Renz Architecture in Salina, brought the vision and plan to life. The ribbon was ceremonial cut on the "Jean Boardman Court." Each of the 12 courts&nbsp;

Salina Tennis Alliance President Clark Renfro said a few words to those who attended to help celebrate the completion of the project.&nbsp;

 </figure>So why 12 courts? That is the magic number needed to host state high school activities and regional tennis tournaments. Salina Central, South and Kansas Wesleyan have already agreed to host tournaments at the new facilities."Salina tennis is arguably one of the strongest tennis communities, not only Kansas, but in the Midwest," Renfro said. "The amount of participation here has only grown over the years, but this will be the spring board&nbsp; to take us even further and will allow tennis to grow not only in Salina, but in this region."The Salina Tennis Alliance is composed of six members, including Renfro as president. The other five directors are Frank Hampton, Jason Ingermanson, Linda Johnson, Joel Phelps and Abbey Rupe.The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on the tennis court named after Salina resident and avid tennis player, Jean Boardman. Boardman was the recipient of the 2021 Recreational Player of the Year Award presented by the United States Tennis Alliance.&nbsp;Boardman said she didn't start playing tennis at a young age.&nbsp;"&nbsp;I had to raise my kids first. So I didn't start until I was older,&nbsp; and I do everything wrong- except I like to win," Boardman said.&nbsp;When asked how it felt to have one of the new courts named in her honor, Boardman, who moved to Salina with her husband 27 years ago, said she couldn't wait to see the name placards on the courts."It is so incredibly nice of them," Boardman said. "I will admit I snuck down to the courts prior to the ceremony to see them [name placards] it is so exciting."&nbsp;<h2>Upcoming Tennis Events</h2>Kids ClinicsKids clinics are based on both age and skill level.
