<a></a><a></a><a></a><a>Abilene, Kan.- A long-time fan of the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene is now behind the microphone, working the rodeo.</a>

As a kid, Scott Grover’s parents brought him to the rodeo when they visited friends in Abilene. He watched announcer Phil Gardenhire and rodeo clown Lecile Harris, both legends in the sport, and thought, ‘maybe someday I can do what they’re doing.’

And now he is. The Camden Point, Mo. man will announce this year’s Abilene Rodeo.

Grover, who grew up in Morrowville, Kan., didn’t have a rodeo background. While in junior college, he helped with a youth rodeo. One day, the announcer got sick, and Grover, who had shown interest in the job, got to handle announcing duties.

After graduating from Kansas State University in 2001, he taught high school agriculture in Council Grove for four years, then began announcing rodeos full time.

He was a team roper for a short time, but his talents were with public speaking. “I dabbled in team roping a little bit, but I was not very good at it. Luckily God gave me a voice to talk about rodeo.”

He is part of the PBR World Finals announcing team and announces PBR Velocity Tour events and PRCA rodeos as well. He works about 40 events a year. He has been selected as the announcer for the RAM Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo six times, the 2014 RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, the 2014 National Finals Steer Roping, and is the 2017 WPRA Announcer of the Year.

Grover married Becky McGee, a former Miss Rodeo Missouri, ten years ago. The couple has three children: son Statler, and daughters Lano and Clemmie Mae.

Grover loves rodeo. “I’m a fan of the sport,” he said. “I didn’t grow up in the industry and my parents weren’t cowboy people, but I fell in love with it at an early age.

“Being able to talk about rodeo and tell the stories of rodeo and cowboys and cowgirls is what I love the most about it.”

He’s delighted to work the rodeo where his love for rodeo began.

“I am beyond excited for this rodeo,” he said. “It’s like I’ve been waiting since I was ten years old to be inside that arena.”

<a>The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo takes place August 1-4 at the fairgrounds in Abilene. Performances are at 7:30 pm nightly. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss believes the Federal Reserve is not done trying to apply the brakes to inflation by raising interest rates.

"They intend to raise rates by another 50 basis points," Goss said. "That's a half of a percent. They'll meet again at the end of this month on the 25th and 26th. The soft landing could get really bumpy in the second half of the year. That's true for the region and that's true for the United States, as the global economy is definitely slowing down."

It's not that anywhere is doing phenomenally, but China's restrictions that were COVID-related are something they have not recovered from.

"When China gets a cold, the rest of the globe gets pneumonia," Goss said. "That used to be true for the U.S. The U.S. used to carry that banner, but not anymore. It's now China. Great Britain is not doing well, Europe is slowing, slowing, slowing. I guess you could say the U.S. is the cleanest shirt in the dirty laundry right now."

Part of the ring around the U.S. collar is that even in the competitive work environment, it's hard to keep good help.

"Wage growth is doing reasonably well, but inflation has done even better," Goss said. "When you adjust those wages for inflation, it's negative. On the lower end of the spectrum, that's not true. The lower end has been doing much better than those above, or those on the higher end, though certainly on the higher end, not really. One of the important things coming out of the surveys right now, productivity growth right now is, over the last year and a half, it's the worst that we've recorded, that has been recorded since these surveys began at the national level in 1947."

An important point of this is that pre-pandemic, people's pay was not matching even this slower growth in productivity. <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-research/rekindling-us-productivity-for-a-new-era#at-a-glance">According to a February article from McKinsey Global Institute</a>, recently, real incomes have grown at 0.7 percent, well below the 1.4 percent gains in productivity between 2005 and 2019.&nbsp;

The question is how quickly can a realignment of those two numbers happen? The pandemic taught the workforce that with a solid Internet connection, they can work almost anywhere for anyone, that has made it a worldwide competition for talent.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage driven by Cardell J. Richiardson, 34, Hammond, Louisiana, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of 90th Road.

The car rear-ended a 2022 semi driven by Marcin&nbsp;Zalewski, 48, Azle, Texas.

EMS transported Richardson to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp;Zalewski was not injured.&nbsp; Richardson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP. One juvenile was present in the car; juvenile record is protected data.

IRS: Scammers impersonate funeral home staff to prey on mourning families

County and state fairs are around the corner, and food is a main attraction. From vendors and trucks to projects and competitions, Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said knowing how to prevent food safety mishaps is key.&nbsp;

“For any food preparation, always wash your hands before handling food,” Blakeslee said. “Use plastic gloves or utensils to handle ready-to-eat foods.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee recommends wearing closed toe shoes for safety in the case of accidents and securing hair with a hat or other method to keep hair out of food.&nbsp;

Food projects need to be safe for judges to sample, she added.&nbsp;

“There are several ways to check for doneness of baked goods such as the recommended baking time, color, touch, inserting a toothpick and it comes out clean, and using a food thermometer,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

Blakeslee, who is also coordinator of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">K-State’s Rapid Response Center for Food Science</a>,&nbsp;&nbsp;suggests preparing food entries early and freezing them to help save time and stress at county fairs.&nbsp;

“Most baked goods freeze well and can still be blue ribbon quality. This includes cookies, yeast and quick breads, and cakes,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

Additional tips for freezing food entries include:&nbsp;

Bake the product as usual. Cool completely to help prevent condensation inside the wrapping and the development of ice crystals.&nbsp;

Use moisture-vapor resistant packaging. This includes freezer-safe plastic containers or bags, heavy-duty aluminum foil, and rigid containers.&nbsp;

Separate layers of cookies with wax paper or parchment paper.&nbsp;

If a cake or bread is to be frosted, freeze the product only and frost after it is thawed.&nbsp;

When preparing pies, Blakeslee suggests making pie crusts ahead of time and freezing them.&nbsp;

“Freezing whole prepared pies can cause the filling to soak into the crust,” she said.&nbsp;

When the time comes to thaw the product, thaw all baked goods in the freezer packaging.&nbsp;

“They can be thawed at room temperature. Remove from the freezer the night before the fair. Once thawed, repackage into the proper packaging according to your fair rules,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

Signage at the fair is also important when preventing food safety hazards.&nbsp;

“There have been foodborne illness outbreaks traced back to fairs in the past. If handling animals, washing hands is very important before handling or eating food because of the chance of contamination from&nbsp;E. coli&nbsp;bacteria,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

She suggests using signage to help remind fair-goers of simple tips for food safety.&nbsp;

“It’s a joint effort between the fair organizers and fair-goers to make the effort to prepare, serve and consume safe food,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

Blakeslee publishes a monthly newsletter called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/newsletter" target="_blank">You Asked It!</a>&nbsp;that provides numerous tips on food safety. Five new individuals have been elected to the Kansas Wesleyan University Board of Trustees, according to information released by the university Saturday. Rev. H. Sharon Howell (Lenexa, Kan.), Roy Lawrence (Salina, Kan.), Dr. Stefanie Milam (Annapolis, Md.), Byron Norris (Salina, Kan.) and Jon Starks (Salina, Kan.) join a group of 23 distinguished church, civic and business leaders who set the future of the university.&nbsp;

“We are so fortunate to&nbsp;have&nbsp;this impressive and diverse group of&nbsp;five&nbsp;individuals&nbsp;join our KWU Board. They have&nbsp;each&nbsp;demonstrated&nbsp;leadership in their respective areas and a&nbsp;dedication to our mission. They will&nbsp;enhance the work of&nbsp;our Board of&nbsp;Trustees,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, KWU president.&nbsp;

The board’s newest officers are led by chair Marilyn Foster Kirk ’68 (Evanston, Ill.), while Barry Weis ’10 (Salina, Kan.) is the immediate past chair. Ken Ebert (Salina, Kan.) is the vice chair and Charles Spencer (Kansas City, Mo.) serves as treasurer, while John Redding ’91 (Salina, Kan.) is the secretary.&nbsp;

Rev. H. Sharon Howell&nbsp;is a retired United Methodist (UMC) clergy member and former president of Saint Paul School of Theology. She previously served UMC churches in Texas, Missouri, and Kansas.&nbsp; Howell earned her Bachelor of Arts from Austin College and her Master of Divinity from Saint Paul.&nbsp;

Roy Lawrence ’65&nbsp;is part-owner of the Salina Liberty indoor football team and the former director of development for St. John’s Military School in Salina. He graduated from Kansas Wesleyan with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1991.

Dr. Stefanie Milam ’02&nbsp;is the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Deputy Project Scientist for Planetary Science at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Milam was one of the lead scientists on 2022’s launch of the JWST and discussed the launch on multiple national platforms, including 60 Minutes and national PBS programming. She is a 2002 graduate of KWU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, and earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Arizona in 2007. She was recognized with the KWU Young Alumni Award in 2008.

Byron Norris ’72&nbsp;is the retired vice president for human resources/risk management at McShares, Inc., based in Salina. He graduated from KWU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1972 and also holds a Master of Science degree from Wichita State University. He previously served on the Board of Trustees from 2013-22.

Jon Starks&nbsp;is the retired president and CEO of UMB Bank, Salina and Abilene. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Kansas, as well as the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware, the American Bankers Association National Commercial Lending School at the University of Oklahoma and the Bank Marketing Association School of Bank Marketing at the University of Colorado. Starks previously served on the KWU Board of Trustees 2012-21, including a term as treasurer.

In other Board of Trustees business, four trustees were elected for an additional three-year term: Ebert; Charles Grimwood; Redding ’91 and Weis ’10. Ebert and Grimwood are past recipients of the university’s Alumni by Choice honor.&nbsp;

Two board members were elected as Trustee Emeriti, with terms expiring in 2028: Emily-May Richards (Peoria, Ariz.) for her first term as Trustee Emerita and Randy St. Clair (Parkville, Mo.) for his second term as Trustee Emeritus. Richards is a past recipient of the university’s Alumni by Choice honor.&nbsp;

Weis was recognized for his service as the board chair from 2021-23, while Julie Sager Miller (Salina, Kan.) and Richards, both outgoing trustees, were formally thanked for their nine years of service.&nbsp;

KWU Announces Newest Additions to Board of Trustees

On Sunday, July 2nd, 2023, Officers with the Salina Police Department took a report of a theft at Atwoods, 400 S. Broadway Blvd., Salina. Employees reported a white male suspect drew their attention when he entered the store wearing a hooded sweatshirt. When the subject left, he set off the anti-theft alarm.

Employees reviewed video surveillance and found the suspect had concealed Milwaukee power tools in his shirt. The tools are valued at over $200. The suspect was seen leaving the area in a silver Chevrolet four door.

Rhett&nbsp;quickly discovered his handler had left a mug of hot steamy liquid gold on the sink counter.&nbsp; It smelled of heavens nectar so he had a sip. WOW!!!!!

He is a sweet sweet boy looking to find a family with a Keurig, lots of love and warm laps and possibly enough money to help him with his caffeine addiction.&nbsp; Rhett loves staring at the birds from his window and Coffee.

Salina Post Shelter Pet of the Week: Meet Rhett

Chris’s Place Child Advocacy Center (CAC), under the umbrella of CAPS of Salina, has been awarded reaccreditation by National Children’s Alliance (NCA) following an extensive application and in-depth site review process, which occurs every five years. NCA also evaluates standards regarding a center’s cultural competency and diversity, forensic interviews, victim support and advocacy, medical evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and child focused setting.

As the accrediting agency for Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) across the country, NCA awards various levels of accreditation and membership to centers responding to allegations of child abuse in ways that are effective and efficient and put the needs of child victims of abuse first. Accreditation is their highest level of membership and is considered the national authority on multidisciplinary approaches to supporting child victims of abuse.

Their accreditation standards were revised in 2023 and are considered the nation’s best practice for CAC’s using evidence-based methods. Chris’s Place is one of the first CACs in Kansas to meet the newly revised standards.

"The reality of child abuse is a sad and often unsung song, and though I believe the work we do speaks for itself, to be recognized at a national level is just incredible! I am so proud to be part of this team and this movement- amazing people doing hard work and all of it, for the kids," said Eliza Hemmer, Program Director, Chris’ Place Child Advocacy Center.

Chris’s Place CAC obtained accreditation in 2006 and has supported over 2,000 children to recover from their abuse since opening their services.

It's a big blue world at the Center for Theatre Arts in Salina this weekend. 

You only have one more chance to see Theatre Salina's 2023 Summer Stage performance of Finding Nemo Jr.&nbsp;

Disney’s Finding Nemo Jr. is a 60-minute musical adaptation of the beloved 2003 Pixar movie Finding Nemo, with new music by award-winning songwriting team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

"The music that accompanies this production is everything that you want out of a Disney show," said Maggie Spicer Brown, Center for Theatre Arts education director. "This show also has everything we want out of a summer stage show. It's the story that you love paired with the talent of the students that we have each year."

Spicer-Brown said with the help of lighting projections, set pieces, sound effects and expertly designed fish costumes, audiences will feel like they are underwater.&nbsp;

"One of the things that we love so much about summer stage is truly the element of fantasy that we get more out of this show than any other that we can do for CTA throughout the year," Spicer-Brown said.&nbsp;

The story centers around Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, living&nbsp; in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo- who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. With the help of lovable characters such as optimistic Dory, laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves.

But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. With the help of lovable characters such as optimistic Dory, laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves.Featuring memorable songs such as “Just Keep Swimming,” “Fish Are Friends Not Food,” and “Go With the Flow,”&nbsp;Finding Nemo JR.&nbsp;brings a vibrant underwater world to life on stage in a story full of family, friendship, and adventure.<figure>
