For Kenton and Lindsey Dreiling, starting their own aviation business in Salina, Kansas didn’t take much deliberation. It was more of a feeling of “we cannot miss this opportunity,” said Kenton. “This is something we have always wanted to do, and the timing just felt right.”&nbsp;

Lindsey agreed, sharing that the most unexpected and wonderful thing that has happened since they launched their business was the feeling of being in the exact right place at the right time. “As I sat in my first consult meeting it was as if every experience I had in my career prior, was meant for this moment. That feeling that you are where you are supposed to be,” said Lindsey. “These are the moments you only get to see looking back and realizing you are meant to be where you are. No doubts, just possibilities.”&nbsp;

The couple, using their education, skill, and passion, started Dreiling Aviation in 2022 and offer aviation business consulting services as well as operational services for small UAS. The duo is currently partnering with the Salina Airport Authority (SAA) to support aviation operations in Salina. This includes business case proposals, investor pitch decks, and strategic planning.&nbsp;

Tim Rogers, SAA Executive Director told the SAJ that Lindsey is uniquely qualified to provide airport operators and aviation business owners high level, strategic planning support. “Together, Lindsey and Kenton offer their clients an array of consulting services that very few in the nation can provide,” said Rogers.&nbsp;

Looking back, even with no history of aviation in her family, Lindsey wanted to fly for as long as she could remember. “It is difficult to know where and when the seed was planted,” said Lindsey, a Certified Flight Instructor for Airplane Single &amp; Multiengine Land (CFI, CFII, MEI), “but this is what I remember. My dad was always interested in flying and we grew up watching what I call yellow eagles (aerial applicators), fly over our family farm. Each time a plane would fly over the whole family would run outside and wave to the yellow bird above.”&nbsp;

For Kenton, it was attending air shows as a kid. “I remember being in awe of the huge aircraft on display; this really sparked my interest in aviation. I was building rockets and balsa planes and built my first remote control plane at age 12,” said Kenton. “From then on remote aircraft have been in my life. My passions for electronics and aviation lead me to build my first drone in college while I was working on my degree as an electronic and computer engineer, and it has been with me ever since.”&nbsp;

Kenton, who continues to work full-time as Enel North America’s Robotics and Technology Manager, has years of experience flying UAS, analyzing data, and supporting farmers using UAS for agriculture mapping. He is Part 107 sUAS certified and is a UAS Flight Instructor. Kenton also has developed a UAS curriculum at Kansas State University focused on fire and hazmat training for public safety officials.&nbsp;

UAS is growing quickly, but at this point according to Lindsey, the primary focus for the business is for aviation consulting with a few short-term weekend UAS flights. “However, as the need for sUAS operations grow we have a team ready,” said Lindsey. “We love supporting aviation companies in their vision and mission and seek to aid in strategic planning, leadership development, business operations, and market intelligence.”&nbsp;

The couple brings a wealth of knowledge from multiple sectors of the industry including Advanced Air Mobility, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems, and aviation business. “Our goal is to support activities that need that extra surge of support to grow business or solve a complex challenge,” said Lindsey. One specific gap they are seeing in the industry right now is the need for intentional aviation leadership programs designed to equip a diverse workforce advancement in aviation fields.&nbsp;

“Another goal is to continue to grow our business in the public safety sector and use drones to help first responders in their mission,” said Kenton. “Drones can help in a multitude of industries. The idea of helping people by using tools that they might not have thought of or using them in a new way gets me excited.”&nbsp;

When asked if running a business as husband and wife was easier or more difficult, Kenton suggested having a family business is an advantage. “We are always bouncing ideas off each other – It could be 10 p.m. and one of us thinks of something.”&nbsp;

Lindsey said one of the keys to a successful business whether it’s family run or otherwise, is to lead with curiosity and hope. “We approach each challenge by listening, asking questions, and being open to new understandings. We truly believe better opportunities for growth and achievement are attainable.”&nbsp;

To that end, Lindsey each morning takes a deep breath giving thanks for another day to build the life of their dreams. “It is an amazing time. We are experiencing an evolution of aviation and transportation with a generation full of people that truly believe they can make the world a better place,” said Lindsey. “With that mindset and motivation, anything is possible.”&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

For the Dreiling family including the children, the biggest reward of launching their own business has been finding a way to work and spend more time together. “I get to work with my best friend and to see a project that we completed, succeed,” said Kenton. For Lindsey, it’s working with her favorite person and taking another adventure together. “Put simply, it’s fun doing something you love with the person you love.”&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. ●Signage should be posted at all public access locations. ●It is recommended that either a portion of the lake or the entire lake or zone, be closed to the public. ●In some cases, the adjacent land should be closed as well. Actual setback distances will be determined on a site-specific basis, if necessary. ●When partial closures (i.e., beach or cove) are issued, the remaining lake or zone area will carry a warning status.

A&nbsp;Warning status&nbsp;indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure. &nbsp;Contact with the waterbody should be avoided.&nbsp;

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

●Signage should be posted at all public access locations.

●Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful.

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock. &nbsp;. Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans. 

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded. 

●Do not allow pets to eat dried algae. 

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible. Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation. &nbsp;

Public Health Advisories for Kansas Lakes Due to Blue-Green Algae

TOPEKA—The Kansas Department of Commerce has awarded the Salina Airport Authority a $3,325,000&nbsp;State of Kansas Aviation Opportunity and Funded Training (ALOFT) program grant, according to a media release from agency.

Aviation and aerospace manufacturers in Kansas have experienced challenges maintaining a qualified workforce.&nbsp; The impact of COVID-19 pandemic highlighted opportunities and gaps in Kansas’ aviation industry workforce, one of the State’s most economically significant sectors.&nbsp; 

The program is providing up to $20,000,000.00 in grants to aviation and aerospace manufacturers, supply chain providers, and local airports for training and workforce development initiatives.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The award announcements were made in June. In addition to the Salina Airport Authority, six companies in Wichita including Textron Aviation and Spirit Aerosystems and one company in Olathe received grants.

TOPEKA—The Kansas Department of Commerce has awarded the Salina Airport Authority a $3,325,000&nbsp;State of Kansas Aviation Opportunity and Funded Training (ALOFT) program grant, according to a media release from agency.Aviation and aerospace manufacturers in Kansas have experienced challenges maintaining a qualified workforce.&nbsp; The impact of COVID-19 pandemic highlighted opportunities and gaps in Kansas’ aviation industry workforce, one of the State’s most economically significant sectors.&nbsp; The program is providing up to $20,000,000.00 in grants to aviation and aerospace manufacturers, supply chain providers, and local airports for training and workforce development initiatives.&nbsp;&nbsp;The award announcements were made in June. In addition to the Salina Airport Authority, six companies in Wichita including Textron Aviation and Spirit Aerosystems and one company in Olathe received grants.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a burglary have made an arrest.

On Thursday, Solomon High School, 400 North Pine Street in Solomon, reported the burglary and theft of&nbsp; power tools, according to Dickinson County Undersheriff Jeff Vaughan.

A deputy responded to the school and learned approximately $1393 worth of tools were missing.

Deputies applied for a search warrant for a residence in Salina. During the search, deputies recovered the tools taken in the burglary.&nbsp;

Later on Thursday, the deputy who responded to the school made contact with the suspect in the case. The deputy arrested 51-year-old Troy Dean Holcom of Salina and booked him into the Dickinson County Jail on requested charges of burglary and theft.

&nbsp;For the first time in a decade, Salina Area United Way is very pleased to announce that they have surpassed their 2022-2023 Campaign fundraising goal, which brought in a grand total of $573,821.65 this past year to give back to nine local nonprofit organizations in the community and to the new childcare initiative.&nbsp;

Organizations who benefit from Salina Area United Way’s Campaign are 2022-2023 Funded Partners: Ashby House, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina, Boy Scouts of America Coronado Area Council, Central Kansas Mental Health Center, Child Advocacy &amp; Parenting Services, Pawnee Mental Health Services, Prairieland Market, Salina Child Care Association, and Salina Family YMCA.

“This is the first time we have hit our goal in a very long time,” says Claire Ludes, Executive Director of Salina Area United Way. “It just goes to show the need the community has for United Way and the support that we provide to our Funded Partners and now childcare for our community! Great things are happening, and I am so excited to see the continued forward movement we as an organization have.”

This past year, Salina Area United Way achieved many new and exciting things throughout their fundraising year to continue in their mission of Strengthening Our Community. In September, United Way received matching funds for the first time ever at their Campaign Kick-off event. Thanks to a generous $25,000 donation by Richard and Sallie Morrison, donations at the event were matched, up to 50%, to make an even greater impact on the community and the 2022-2023 Funded Partners. Over $50,000 was raised at Campaign Kick-off, with a grant total of $75,000 including the matching funds. In December, Salina Area United Way’s big Christmas fundraising event, Dueling Pianos Christmas, raised a total of $30,000 throughout the night, which saw a $10,000 increase in dollars raised from the previous Dueling Pianos Christmas event in 2021.

In April this year, Salina Area United Way announced the start and opening of the Early Childcare Initiative Fund at their organization to make strong and lasting steps towards combating childcare issues and shortages in Saline County. And in late June, United Way was awarded over $1.8 million from the Kansas Children’s Cabinet Child Care Capacity Accelerator grant program to help create 187 new childcare slots in the Salina area.

“We are very excited about the momentum that our team has built for Salina Area United Way this past year,” says MacKenzie Morris, Director of Marketing at Salina Area United Way. “Our sights are on raising the bar even higher throughout the upcoming 2023-2024 Campaign, and we have a lot of great projects and things happening for the community in the near future that we can’t wait to share with everyone!”

The cause of a fire that destroyed an SUV in northeast Saline County Wednesday night is unknown, according to the Saline County Sheriff's office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning&nbsp;that deputies and firefighters from Rural Fire District #3&nbsp; were dispatched at approximately 10:57 p.m. Wednesday to the 7200 block of W. Pleasant Hill Road to the reports of a vehicle on fire.&nbsp;

A 32-year-old man, Brandon Bloom, Salina, had parked his 2012 Chevy along Prairie Hill Road. The fire resulted in a total loss of $4,000.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, July 5, at 10:57 pm, first responders arrived at a vehicle fire at the 7200 block of W Pleasant Hill Rd. The vehicle had been parked by its 32-year-old owner, a local resident.

Unknown cause of Wednesday night vehicle fire in north Salina

&nbsp;It’s common for vegetables like squash, cucumbers and melons to produce flowers but no fruit, said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

“Most squash, cucumbers and melons have separate male and female flowers on each plant,” Domenghini said. “Usually, male flowers appear first in the season. Female flowers have a swollen area beneath the petals while male flowers have a narrow base.”

Domenghini suggests checking garden plants to see if both flower types are present. If male and female flowers are present, observe the area for pollinators.

“If few to no pollinators are present, vegetables with separate male and female flowers may not produce fruit,” Domenghini said.

To pollinate the flowers, use a paintbrush to transfer pollen from a male flower to the stigma of the female flower. Domenghini recommends marking that flower and make note of whether it is the only one that sets fruit. If this is the case, the problem is likely a lack of pollinators.

She added that pollinator activity can be inhibited by weather.

“(Pollinators) are less active on cold or rainy days. The use of insecticides can also harm pollinators. If using herbicides, apply them in the evening when the flowers have closed for the day,” Domenghini said.

Additionally, high temperatures can cause vegetables to drop their blossoms prematurely.

“Tomatoes will stop producing fruit in temperatures above 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Production will resume once temperatures decrease,” she said.

Domenghini said it is important to ensure plants are receiving adequate water during this time.

“Applying nitrogen promotes vegetative growth. However, excessive amounts can inhibit flower and fruit production. Follow fertilizer recommendations to avoid this,” she said.

Produce Stand In the Garden: Why is My Crop Not Producing Fruit?

Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges said this morning that the Salina Police Department received an additional 54 calls for service for fireworks between 7:00 a.m. on July 5 and 7:00 a.m. on July 6.

According to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus, this year between June 27 and July 5, the Salina Police Department received a total of 80 calls for services due to complaints about fireworks. 

Hanus said this morning that last year during the same period SPD received 101 calls for service due to firework complaints.

LENEXA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $50.4 million in annual funding to states and territories for communities most in need of access to clean and safe drinking water. The funding will support projects and activities in underserved, small and disadvantaged communities to access and invest in water infrastructure and comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).

“Across the country, too many communities struggle with accessing clean, safe water,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;EPA Assistant Administrator for Water Radhika Fox. “These grants will invest in solutions that upgrade infrastructure, improve water reliability, and deliver safe drinking water to our most vulnerable communities.&nbsp; This grant, along with other funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will strengthen our nation’s water infrastructure and ensure everyone has access to clean, safe water.”

Grant funding can support a broad range of approaches to help communities address drinking water concerns, from household water quality testing to monitoring for unregulated drinking water contaminants. Funds may also support efforts to build the technical, financial, and managerial abilities of a water system’s operations and staff. Infrastructure projects—from transmission, distribution, and storage—that support drinking water quality improvements are also eligible for grant funding.

The Small, Underserved, and Disadvantaged Community grant program, established under the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act, awards funding to states and territories on a non-competitive basis. EPA awards funding to states based on an allocation formula that includes factors for population below the poverty level, small water systems, and underserved communities. There is a 10% Tribal allotment.
