NWS-Wichita: Severe Storms Possible Wednesday Night

SALINE COUNTY— In a trench 9 feet below the surface, a worker employed by Precision Plumbing LLC was connecting a plumbing line to the municipal sewer in Salina in January when he was buried under dirt and rocks after a trench wall collapsed, according to a report from OSHA.

The company’s foreman entered the trench and tried to dig the worker out. Soon after, he then became buried up to his knees when the trench wall collapsed further. For more than an hour, first responders worked to rescue the two workers. Both survived one of the construction industry’s most serious hazards.

In an investigation by the&nbsp;U.S. Department of Labor’s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.osha.gov/" target="_blank">Occupational Safety and Health Administration</a>,&nbsp;inspectors determined the trench had no protection against cave-ins and the employer allowed soil piles and equipment within 2 feet of the excavation’s edge. OSHA found Precision Plumbing’s violations of these federal trench safety regulations willful.

Inspectors learned that a superintendent with the site’s general contractor, Multicon Inc. — a Wichita-based construction company — had identified the trench collapse hazards to the Precision Plumbing foreman but left the site before making certain the subcontractor corrected the hazard.

“Fortunately, first responders rescued two workers when a 9-foot trench collapsed. This incident is a stark reminder of how soil can shift suddenly and bury a person within seconds,” explained OSHA Area Director Todd Underwood in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp;“Many other workers are less fortunate. In fact, OSHA investigated the deaths of 39 workers in trench collapses in 2022 alone.”

<a href="https://www.dol.gov/sites/dolgov/files/OPA/newsreleases/2023/07/OSHA2023149.pdf" target="_blank">OSHA’s investigation led the agency to issue Precision Plumbing, located in Cheney, two willful and six serious violations with proposed penalties of $333,949.</a>&nbsp;In addition to the willful violations related to the trench collapse, investigators found the company failed to do the following:

OSHA also cited Multicon Inc., the general contractor, for one serious violation for failing to protect employees from cave-in and engulfment hazards. The agency proposed penalties of $14,063.

OSHA has a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/enforcement/directives/CPL-02-00-161_0.pdf" target="_blank">national emphasis program on trenching and excavations</a>.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/publications/trench_safety_tips_card.pdf" target="_blank">Trenching standards require protective systems in trenches deeper than 5 feet</a>, and soil and other materials kept at least 2 feet from the edge of a trench. Additionally, trenches must be inspected by a competent person, be&nbsp;free of standing water and atmospheric hazards and have a safe means of entering and exiting prior to allowing a worker to enter.

Kansas Wheat Commission This is day nine of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest continues to plod along into the second week of July, and farmers who still have wheat left to cut are facing rain delays and hail, leading to a long, drawn-out wheat harvest.&nbsp;

From July 3 to July 9, there were only 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) crop progress report for the week ending July 9, 2023. Harvest is now 59% complete, well behind 93% last year and 84% for the average.&nbsp;

Farmers are balancing a mix of emotions from frustration caused by having to wait for conditions to dry, stress of potential hail and other weather events, with joy from these recent rains.&nbsp;

Northwest of Hays, Eric Werth, General Manager at Golden Belt Coop acknowledges some of the struggles he has seen in Ellis county.&nbsp;

“We are really just waiting for it to dry out around here,” Werth says.

Werth speculates they are about 90% wrapped up with harvest for this year. Another stressor that Werth describes is the amount of weeds that the rain has brought with it.

After a late start on June 21, Werth reports that he is expecting probably 55% of the quantity they have gotten in years past. Yields are averaging around 30 bushels per acre, with some brighter spots getting up to 40 bushels per acre.&nbsp;

“That is definitely not the majority, though,” Werth says. “The [Westbred] Grainfield variety is one that seems to be doing well this year.”

Looking at test weights is encouraging for this area, though, seeing those come in around 62 pounds per bushel. However, proteins have been relatively low this year. He guesses they have taken in about 450,000 bushels so far. He said most of the wheat his elevator receives ends up at flour mills.&nbsp;

Seventeen miles west of the geographical center of the continental United States, Bruce Williams at Trinity Ag in Smith Center says his area has been subject to the rain delays as well.&nbsp;

“The thing that hurt us the most is we’ve basically cut very little since July 4th,” Williams noted. “There has been so much humidity.”&nbsp;

Williams said harvest began on June 24 this year, only four days off from when they usually start cutting, but after these recent rains, harvest has been slow to get back up and running. Having had big days on July 3 and 4, they have not had a single, full week of continuous cutting this harvest.&nbsp;

Initial drought stress caused some decent test weights in earlier loads to the elevator. Test weights were about 60-63 pounds per bushel, but these later storms have caused those numbers to dip into the 58 pound per bushel range. Proteins in the area have been as high as 12 to 14 percent. Yields have been all over the board, but even with farmers starting with their best fields, yields were only 35-40 bushels per acre. Many farmers have been abandoning their fields, as the weed pressure has been so intense. The kochia and pigweeds have been so dense that in some of the more extreme cases, you cannot even see the wheat as you drive past fields.&nbsp;

Along with the rain, northwest Kansas has been hit with hail storms. Fortunately, not much of the crop has been destroyed. Smith and Phillips counties are expecting to see more rain and storm chances in the upcoming week.&nbsp;

Elevators and farmers aren’t the only ones waiting for conditions to dry. Custom harvest crews like MJB Harvesting out of Grainfield, Kansas, are anxiously waiting to get out and begin harvesting. So far, MJB Harvesting has only been able to cut one field while in Kansas.

Mark Bosse, owner of MJB, shared that nearly all of their customers in Kansas have been affected by either hail or drought, or both. Fields that were going to be decent are now looking to only be 15-35 bushels per acre. The one field the MJB crew has been able to cut so far yielded about 35-40 bushels per acre. Several producers along the Gove and Lane county line will not even harvest their crop.&nbsp;

Composed of local people, high schoolers and J-1 visa employees, the MJB harvesting crew has been on the road since May 22. They started in Texas and will go all the way up into Montana. Although conditions were good in Texas, the wheat got bleak as they progressed north. Fortunately for them, crop conditions are looking up for areas north of Kansas, rounding out a very interesting wheat crop year.&nbsp;

 </figure> Kansas Wheat Commission This is day nine of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.Harvest continues to plod along into the second week of July, and farmers who still have wheat left to cut are facing rain delays and hail, leading to a long, drawn-out wheat harvest.&nbsp;From July 3 to July 9, there were only 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) crop progress report for the week ending July 9, 2023. Harvest is now 59% complete, well behind 93% last year and 84% for the average.&nbsp;Farmers are balancing a mix of emotions from frustration caused by having to wait for conditions to dry, stress of potential hail and other weather events, with joy from these recent rains.&nbsp;Northwest of Hays, Eric Werth, General Manager at Golden Belt Coop acknowledges some of the struggles he has seen in Ellis county.&nbsp;“We are really just waiting for it to dry out around here,” Werth says.Werth speculates they are about 90% wrapped up with harvest for this year. Another stressor that Werth describes is the amount of weeds that the rain has brought with it.After a late start on June 21, Werth reports that he is expecting probably 55% of the quantity they have gotten in years past. Yields are averaging around 30 bushels per acre, with some brighter spots getting up to 40 bushels per acre.&nbsp;“That is definitely not the majority, though,” Werth says. “The [Westbred] Grainfield variety is one that seems to be doing well this year.”Looking at test weights is encouraging for this area, though, seeing those come in around 62 pounds per bushel. However, proteins have been relatively low this year. He guesses they have taken in about 450,000 bushels so far. He said most of the wheat his elevator receives ends up at flour mills.&nbsp;Seventeen miles west of the geographical center of the continental United States, Bruce Williams at Trinity Ag in Smith Center says his area has been subject to the rain delays as well.&nbsp;“The thing that hurt us the most is we’ve basically cut very little since July 4th,” Williams noted. “There has been so much humidity.”&nbsp;Williams said harvest began on June 24 this year, only four days off from when they usually start cutting, but after these recent rains, harvest has been slow to get back up and running. Having had big days on July 3 and 4, they have not had a single, full week of continuous cutting this harvest.&nbsp;Initial drought stress caused some decent test weights in earlier loads to the elevator. Test weights were about 60-63 pounds per bushel, but these later storms have caused those numbers to dip into the 58 pound per bushel range. Proteins in the area have been as high as 12 to 14 percent. Yields have been all over the board, but even with farmers starting with their best fields, yields were only 35-40 bushels per acre. Many farmers have been abandoning their fields, as the weed pressure has been so intense. The kochia and pigweeds have been so dense that in some of the more extreme cases, you cannot even see the wheat as you drive past fields.&nbsp;Along with the rain, northwest Kansas has been hit with hail storms. Fortunately, not much of the crop has been destroyed. Smith and Phillips counties are expecting to see more rain and storm chances in the upcoming week.&nbsp;Elevators and farmers aren’t the only ones waiting for conditions to dry. Custom harvest crews like MJB Harvesting out of Grainfield, Kansas, are anxiously waiting to get out and begin harvesting. So far, MJB Harvesting has only been able to cut one field while in Kansas.Mark Bosse, owner of MJB, shared that nearly all of their customers in Kansas have been affected by either hail or drought, or both. Fields that were going to be decent are now looking to only be 15-35 bushels per acre. The one field the MJB crew has been able to cut so far yielded about 35-40 bushels per acre. Several producers along the Gove and Lane county line will not even harvest their crop.&nbsp;Composed of local people, high schoolers and J-1 visa employees, the MJB harvesting crew has been on the road since May 22. They started in Texas and will go all the way up into Montana. Although conditions were good in Texas, the wheat got bleak as they progressed north. Kansas Wheat: Day 9 Harvest Report

By Monique Koerner KSRE While meat and poultry are popular choices for grilling, the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) reminds us that cooking these foods with intense heat can lead to formation of potential carcinogens. Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) form in meat when its proteins react to the intense heat of the grill. Studies have linked HCAs to development of cancer.

You can modify your grilling technique to reduce the chance of cancer risk. Marinating meat before grilling can decrease formation of HCAs. If you are grilling larger cuts of meat, pre-cook them partially to reduce the time meat is exposed to flame. Trim the fat from meat to reduce flare-ups and charring. Cut meat into smaller portions and mix with vegetables to shorten the cooking time. Another way to minimize cancer risk — grill more veggies!

Grilled vegetables and fruits are delicious, and they are key elements in a healthful diet. The bonus is they don’t form HCAs when cooked, so that cancer risk is eliminated. As you plan cookout meals this summer, include plenty of colorful grilled vegetables and fruits like asparagus, all types of peppers, squash, broccoli, tomatoes, onions, carrots, corn, mushrooms, eggplant, potatoes, mangoes, and pineapple. Even the pickiest eaters will usually enjoy some grilled pineapple! Grilled zucchini is one of my favorites and is a good way to get rid of those extra squash that are so prolific. Or try something new, like grilled lettuce!

Here are basic instructions for grilling veggies and fruit:

· Slice veggies the same thickness so they cook at the same rate.

· Drizzle or brush with olive oil before cooking

· Season simply with a sprinkle of salt, pepper, and any dried herbs you like.

· Grill over medium heat to start. To prevent veggies and fruit from slipping through the grates, lay them crosswise or use a grill basket.

· Close the lid to create the same environment as an oven. Flip halfway through cooking time. More dense vegetables, like peppers and onions, will cook in about 8 to 10 minutes. Squash, eggplant, and asparagus will only require 5 to 7 minutes.

· After removing vegetables and fruit from heat, you can add a splash of balsamic vinegar (flavored varieties add interest) and fresh herbs. Before adding herbs, you may need to add just a bit of olive oil.

One way to add flavor to meals from the grill is with a salsa side. There are so many combinations of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and seasonings to enjoy! So, don’t think of salsa as just a dip with chips. Almost anything savory, salty, meaty, fresh, or slightly sweet is even better with salsa on top: chicken, fish,

steak, pork, lamb, or a baked potato. Top a salad with salsa and sliced chicken, boiled eggs, or tuna and you have a winning meal, especially in the heat of summer. Have you tried cucumber salsa? It is great on a salad!

Another benefit of grilling is cooking outside keeps the heat outside and not in your home. Cooking enough for leftovers during the weekend can help with busy weekdays between work and other activities. Grilling can offer a different flavor which can sometimes encourage family to try new foods. Grilling is easy and convenient so go ahead and try a new fruit or vegetable today!

Promoting community engagement and education about the area's outdoor warning siren system is the impetus of a new program offered by Saline County Emergency Management.

"We are excited about the Adopt A Siren program," said Cundy. "We're asking community groups and volunteers who wish to expand their knowledge of severe weather preparedness to participate in our monthly testing. Groups will be dedicated to one siren within the community. They will have the opportunity to observe and track the effectiveness of their siren and share that information on their social network."

By participating in the Adopt A Siren program, citizens can play a critical role in safeguarding community members against severe weather incidents, emergency management noted in a news release. Adopters will undergo a brief training to learn about the proper functioning of an outdoor warning siren and how to share that information on social media. Adopters are not required to be present at every test of their siren.

Outdoor warning sirens are tested on the first Monday of every month at 4 p.m., weather permitting. The sirens are intended to be heard outdoors and are just one of the layers of warning systems in place to receive weather alerts, emergency management noted.

Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations after a traffic stop on Interstate 135.

Just after 1:38 a.m. Friday, a Salina Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for following too closely and making and unsafe lane change,&nbsp;according to SPD Sergeant Kyle Tonniges.

When conducting the traffic stop the officers smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. They searched the vehicle and located 36.4 pounds of THC oil.

The passenger of the vehicle confessed to purchasing the drugs.&nbsp; Lance Fane, 21, Ind., was&nbsp;arrested for distribution of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia.&nbsp;

NWS: Severe Weather Outlook for Tonight

DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8:30a.m. Monday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2106 Can-Am motorcycle driven by Joseph Peter Jacobs, 74, Virginia Beach, Virginia, was eastbound on Interstate 70 six miles west of Junction City.

The motorcycle left the roadway, entered south ditch, struck an embankment and overturned.

EMS transported Jacobs to Salina Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Man hospitalized in Salina after I-70 motorcycle accident

A Salina gas station had $6,000 worth of diesel fuel stolen from its tanks last week.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning, at approximately 4 a.m. on July 6, 1,550 gallons of diesel were stolen from the storage tanks at Singh's Travel Plaza, 2124 N. Hedville Road.

Soldan said the owners of the business did not discover the theft had occurred until the morning of July 7. Soldan also said footage obtained from CCTV cameras show a Red Dodge 3500 Ram pickup pulling a gooseneck trailer.&nbsp;

"They pulled up on top of the tank fill for the underground diesel tank and pumped fuel from the underground tank into the tanks on the trailer," Soldan said. "The gooseneck trailer had no plates on it but the truck did have a Florida tag."

Soldan also said the gooseneck trailer contained approximately 8 tote tanks, which were covered with tarp.

Saline County Deputies did discover a trail of diesel leading from the diesel tank, to almost a mile heading east on Interstate 70.&nbsp;

The Saline County Sheriff's Office did attempt to locate the vehicle using the FLOCK system, but was unable to locate the RAM pickup.&nbsp;

</div>By NATE KING Salina PostA Salina gas station had $6,000 worth of diesel fuel stolen from its tanks last week.Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning, at approximately 4 a.m. on July 6, 1,550 gallons of diesel were stolen from the storage tanks at Singh's Travel Plaza, 2124 N. Hedville Road.Soldan said the owners of the business did not discover the theft had occurred until the morning of July 7. Soldan also said footage obtained from CCTV cameras show a Red Dodge 3500 Ram pickup pulling a gooseneck trailer.&nbsp;"They pulled up on top of the tank fill for the underground diesel tank and pumped fuel from the underground tank into the tanks on the trailer," Soldan said. "The gooseneck trailer had no plates on it but the truck did have a Florida tag."Soldan also said the gooseneck trailer contained approximately 8 tote tanks, which were covered with tarp.Saline County Deputies did discover a trail of diesel leading from the diesel tank, to almost a mile heading east on Interstate 70.&nbsp;The Saline County Sheriff's Office did attempt to locate the vehicle using the FLOCK system, but was unable to locate the RAM pickup.&nbsp;

A multi-year tennis project has come to fruition.

On Thursday Saline County tennis icons, city commissioners, current tennis players and members of the community gathered at the new Salina Tennis Alliance courts for a Salina Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony.

The 12 court facility,805 The Midway, in Kenwood Park, is on the same grounds as the previous Salina Municipal Swimming Pool and rodeo arena.&nbsp;

The ceremony took place at 5:30 p.m. and was attended by city officials including Commissioners Trent Davis, Bill Longbine, Greg Lenkiewicz and Salina City Manager Mike Schrage. USD 305 Superintendent Linn Exline also attended.&nbsp;

Back in March the city commission passed a resolution to partner with USD 305 and Salina Tennis Alliance in order to build the $2.6 million facility.

Hutton Construction, along with Jones Gillan Renz Architecture in Salina, brought the vision and plan to life. The ribbon was ceremonial cut on the "Jean Boardman Court." Each of the 12 courts&nbsp;

Salina Tennis Alliance President Clark Renfro said a few words to those who attended to help celebrate the completion of the project.&nbsp;

"It has been a project and we've all been working on this for multiple years," Renfro said. "It's a result of really the tennis community coming together and folks here, as well as all around the area, to make this a reality. We are privileged to have a community that supports projects like this that works in a public private partnership."

So why 12 courts? That is the magic number needed to host state high school activities and regional tennis tournaments. Salina Central, South and Kansas Wesleyan have already agreed to host tournaments at the new facilities.

"Salina tennis is arguably one of the strongest tennis communities, not only Kansas, but in the Midwest," Renfro said. "The amount of participation here has only grown over the years, but this will be the spring board&nbsp; to take us even further and will allow tennis to grow not only in Salina, but in this region."

The Salina Tennis Alliance is composed of six members, including Renfro as president. The other five directors are Frank Hampton, Jason Ingermanson, Linda Johnson, Joel Phelps and Abbey Rupe.

The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on the tennis court named after Salina resident and avid tennis player, Jean Boardman. Boardman was the recipient of the 2021 Recreational Player of the Year Award presented by the United States Tennis Alliance.&nbsp;

Boardman said she didn't start playing tennis at a young age.&nbsp;

"&nbsp;I had to raise my kids first. So I didn't start until I was older,&nbsp; and I do everything wrong- except I like to win," Boardman said.&nbsp;

When asked how it felt to have one of the new courts named in her honor, Boardman, who moved to Salina with her husband 27 years ago, said she couldn't wait to see the name placards on the courts.

"It is so incredibly nice of them," Boardman said. "I will admit I snuck down to the courts prior to the ceremony to see them [name placards] it is so exciting."&nbsp;

Kids clinics are based on both age and skill level. We follow the USTA’s standards for development and use appropriate racquets, balls, nets, and courts for each age range to ensure an optimal learning experience for your child. “Adult Intermediate/Advanced”:&nbsp;Experienced tennis players will spend the first part of the class focusing on a certain stroke while the second half is focusing on doubles strategy and patterns of play. The ability to rally consistently is required.

Salina Tennis Alliance cuts Ribbon for New 12-Court Tennis Complex

Salina Regional Health Center has received three American Heart Association quality achievement awards for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability. The hospital received the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Award, Target: Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll, and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S.A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidence- and research-based guidelines.&nbsp;Get With The Guidelines - Stroke&nbsp;is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which&nbsp;can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.

SRHC Nationally Recognized for Providing High-Quality Stroke Care

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher Four years ago, I was asked to become a contributor to this column and had no idea that this would become a regular part of my world. I also didn’t realize how much fun it would be to share experiences and thoughts about farming, rural life, community and the lessons that have formed my values. It hasn’t always been easy — balancing deadlines with a busy schedule, and the sometimes daunting task of coming up with something every month worth writing about that hasn’t already been done. The most surprising part of this experience has been hearing about the impact of the column. I don’t think I have written a column yet that didn’t generate fan mail, a note from a friend or a conversation about how the column struck a note with a reader. However, the biggest impact has been planting a seed that grew into a great program. In one of my first columns, I wrote about hosting an etiquette dinner for our collegiate Farm Bureau students to help them understand a prepare to follow etiquette in the working world. After the column was published, I received an email from Beth Gaines, executive director of the Kansas FFA Foundation. She inquired if I would be willing to hold an etiquette dinner for the newly elected Kansas FFA Officers to help them better prepare for the business meals they would be attending during their year of service. Plans for the etiquette dinner soon turned into a day of training focused on helping the student officers to prepare for all aspects of the business meetings and visits with sponsors or supporters in the year ahead. With the support of several businesses in the Pratt area, we put together an event that has become an annual training for the newly elected officers. Most of the students come into the training far ahead of their peers as polished public speakers and great conversationalists. But these 18 and 19 year olds will be facing CEOs and elected officials; they will be expected to rattle off important facts, eloquently sharing personal examples of how FFA is impacting the future of agriculture and have the confidence to handle any situation they encounter. We train the students to prepare to lead conversations with powerful adults, to emotionally connect over common values with stakeholders and how to make sure to balance great conversation with a purposeful meeting. These are skills that a lot of adults don’t even possess; skills that will be valuable beyond their time in FFA setting many on the path to become CEOs and elected officials themselves. Every time I hear someone talk about the lack of interpersonal skills in young people or how that they are too dependent on technology, I shake my head know it isn’t true. Here is a group of students who defy those expectations. The difference is that this group of students has been equipped to do the hard things. As someone who personally benefited from the same types of trainings, I am grateful to be the person teaching and coaching a new generation of leaders. We often don’t see the impact we are making quickly or clearly. In this case, I am lucky to see how the words from this column sparked an idea that led to actions and outcomes making a group of people better prepared to help those around them. Sharing my thoughts and experiences with all of you has been a joy. I hope my words continue to inspires great ideas and each of you to share your experiences and skills with the world around you.

Insight Kansas: When Words Inspire Action

Beginning Monday July 10, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be working on replacing sections of roadway on Edward Street between Magnolia Road and Wesley Street.

Edward Street will be closed and traffic will be detoured around the construction by the way of Wesley Street. Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within one to two weeks.

<a></a><a></a><a></a><a>Abilene, Kan.- A long-time fan of the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene is now behind the microphone, working the rodeo.</a>

As a kid, Scott Grover’s parents brought him to the rodeo when they visited friends in Abilene. He watched announcer Phil Gardenhire and rodeo clown Lecile Harris, both legends in the sport, and thought, ‘maybe someday I can do what they’re doing.’

And now he is. The Camden Point, Mo. man will announce this year’s Abilene Rodeo.

Grover, who grew up in Morrowville, Kan., didn’t have a rodeo background. While in junior college, he helped with a youth rodeo. One day, the announcer got sick, and Grover, who had shown interest in the job, got to handle announcing duties.

After graduating from Kansas State University in 2001, he taught high school agriculture in Council Grove for four years, then began announcing rodeos full time.

He was a team roper for a short time, but his talents were with public speaking. “I dabbled in team roping a little bit, but I was not very good at it. Luckily God gave me a voice to talk about rodeo.”

He is part of the PBR World Finals announcing team and announces PBR Velocity Tour events and PRCA rodeos as well. He works about 40 events a year. He has been selected as the announcer for the RAM Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo six times, the 2014 RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, the 2014 National Finals Steer Roping, and is the 2017 WPRA Announcer of the Year.

Grover married Becky McGee, a former Miss Rodeo Missouri, ten years ago. The couple has three children: son Statler, and daughters Lano and Clemmie Mae.

Grover loves rodeo. “I’m a fan of the sport,” he said. “I didn’t grow up in the industry and my parents weren’t cowboy people, but I fell in love with it at an early age.

“Being able to talk about rodeo and tell the stories of rodeo and cowboys and cowgirls is what I love the most about it.”

He’s delighted to work the rodeo where his love for rodeo began.

“I am beyond excited for this rodeo,” he said. “It’s like I’ve been waiting since I was ten years old to be inside that arena.”

<a>The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo takes place August 1-4 at the fairgrounds in Abilene. Performances are at 7:30 pm nightly.  </figure><a></a><a></a><a></a><a>Abilene, Kan.- A long-time fan of the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene is now behind the microphone, working the rodeo.</a>As a kid, Scott Grover’s parents brought him to the rodeo when they visited friends in Abilene. He watched announcer Phil Gardenhire and rodeo clown Lecile Harris, both legends in the sport, and thought, ‘maybe someday I can do what they’re doing.’And now he is. The Camden Point, Mo. man will announce this year’s Abilene Rodeo.Grover, who grew up in Morrowville, Kan., didn’t have a rodeo background. While in junior college, he helped with a youth rodeo. One day, the announcer got sick, and Grover, who had shown interest in the job, got to handle announcing duties.After graduating from Kansas State University in 2001, he taught high school agriculture in Council Grove for four years, then began announcing rodeos full time.He was a team roper for a short time, but his talents were with public speaking. “I dabbled in team roping a little bit, but I was not very good at it. Luckily God gave me a voice to talk about rodeo.”He is part of the PBR World Finals announcing team and announces PBR Velocity Tour events and PRCA rodeos as well. He works about 40 events a year. He has been selected as the announcer for the RAM Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo six times, the 2014 RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, the 2014 National Finals Steer Roping, and is the 2017 WPRA Announcer of the Year.Grover married Becky McGee, a former Miss Rodeo Missouri, ten years ago. The couple has three children: son Statler, and daughters Lano and Clemmie Mae.<figure>

 </figure>Grover loves rodeo. “I’m a fan of the sport,” he said. “I didn’t grow up in the industry and my parents weren’t cowboy people, but I fell in love with it at an early age.“Being able to talk about rodeo and tell the stories of rodeo and cowboys and cowgirls is what I love the most about it.”He’s delighted to work the rodeo where his love for rodeo began.“I am beyond excited for this rodeo,” he said. “It’s like I’ve been waiting since I was ten years old to be inside that arena.”<a>The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo takes place August 1-4 at the fairgrounds in Abilene. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss believes the Federal Reserve is not done trying to apply the brakes to inflation by raising interest rates.

"They intend to raise rates by another 50 basis points," Goss said. "That's a half of a percent. They'll meet again at the end of this month on the 25th and 26th. The soft landing could get really bumpy in the second half of the year. That's true for the region and that's true for the United States, as the global economy is definitely slowing down."

It's not that anywhere is doing phenomenally, but China's restrictions that were COVID-related are something they have not recovered from.

"When China gets a cold, the rest of the globe gets pneumonia," Goss said. "That used to be true for the U.S. The U.S. used to carry that banner, but not anymore. It's now China. Great Britain is not doing well, Europe is slowing, slowing, slowing. I guess you could say the U.S. is the cleanest shirt in the dirty laundry right now."

Part of the ring around the U.S. collar is that even in the competitive work environment, it's hard to keep good help.

"Wage growth is doing reasonably well, but inflation has done even better," Goss said. "When you adjust those wages for inflation, it's negative. On the lower end of the spectrum, that's not true. The lower end has been doing much better than those above, or those on the higher end, though certainly on the higher end, not really. One of the important things coming out of the surveys right now, productivity growth right now is, over the last year and a half, it's the worst that we've recorded, that has been recorded since these surveys began at the national level in 1947."

An important point of this is that pre-pandemic, people's pay was not matching even this slower growth in productivity. <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-research/rekindling-us-productivity-for-a-new-era#at-a-glance">According to a February article from McKinsey Global Institute</a>, recently, real incomes have grown at 0.7 percent, well below the 1.4 percent gains in productivity between 2005 and 2019.&nbsp;

The question is how quickly can a realignment of those two numbers happen? The pandemic taught the workforce that with a solid Internet connection, they can work almost anywhere for anyone, that has made it a worldwide competition for talent.

LINCOLN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 8:30p.m. Sunday in Lincoln County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage driven by Cardell J. Richiardson, 34, Hammond, Louisiana, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of 90th Road.

The car rear-ended a 2022 semi driven by Marcin&nbsp;Zalewski, 48, Azle, Texas.

EMS transported Richardson to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp;Zalewski was not injured.&nbsp; Richardson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP. One juvenile was present in the car; juvenile record is protected data.
