The Coyotes are back on the road Saturday for a Kansas Conference game against Bethel. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Thresher Stadium in North Newton.

Bethel's 30-24 victory last season in JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex ended KWU's 13-game winning streak. It was the Coyotes first loss to the Threshers since the 2008 season. KWU has an 18-4 edge since the 2001 season.

The Coyotes evened their record with a 35-28 victory over previously unbeaten Friends last Saturday at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex. The offense produced a season-high 353 yards that included a season-best 245 rushing yards.

Friends entered the game averaging just under 56 points and 533 total yards - 494 rushing - but had 388 total yard and 320 rushing Saturday. Linebacker&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/6fae3949-7ec3-4bf3-b17e-249f5d1ea70f?elinkdata=931">Shaylan Lewis</a>&nbsp;had a team-best 13 tackles, linebacker&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/30936362-ab74-4afe-bdcd-3a4735730713?elinkdata=931">Ricco Moore</a>&nbsp;11 and safety&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/c052da2a-a030-4381-9b28-3ccb1a6eef10?elinkdata=931">Julian Urioste</a>&nbsp;10 for the Coyotes.

KWU closes out play against the Kessinger Division a week from Saturday when McPherson comes to town. Following a bye week October 7 the Coyotes begin play against fellow Bissell Division opponents starting with Avila on October 14 in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Threshers defeated Avila 42-26 last Saturday in Kansas City. They led 35-6 at halftime but surrendered 20 points in the fourth quarter. They opened the season with victories over Sterling and Saint Mary but lost to Ottawa 28-24 September 9 in North Newton.

Bethel doesn't run the flexbone but does employ a triple option offense that has been highly effective. The Threshers average 324 yards rushing, 420 total yards and are scoring 41 points per game. They had 405 total yards against Avila that included 264 on the ground.

Bethel, like Friends, has a dynamic quarterback in DJ Ciers. He had 107 yards and two touchdowns running the ball and threw for 141 yards and two more scores against Avila. Ciers has 610 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns this season and averages 152.5 yards rushing and 95.5 yards passing per game.

Bethel's defense has been stellar as well. Opponents are averaging 19.8 points and 72 yards rushing per game.

Linebacker Kade Miller has a team-best 31 tackles and linebacker Tate Seaboldt 29. Miller was the KCAC Defensive Player of the Week after making seven tackles and returning an interception 44 yards for a touchdown against Avila - his second pick six of the season.

"I was just super impressed by the overall effort by our guys. The energy on the sideline was incredible and the fans were awesome. The difference between 1-3 and 2-2 is massive - it was really a great night. Lara made great decisions with the ball and the zero sack thing is just huge. The final piece of this is making sure that we can stretch the defense vertically (with the passing game). Bethel is not the same offense (as Friends) but has a similar philosophy, they run the ball about 90 percent of the time. Their quarterback is extremely athletic and very, very fast. We need to find a way to make sure that he's on the ground at the end of the play and not making moves and cutting up the field. Their defense is very similar to Evangel who we didn't have a ton of success against."

K-Dub Football travels to North Newton to face Bethel

Following a vote at the September 8 meeting of the Kansas State University Foundation's board of trustees in Manhattan, two members were reelected to a three-year term on the foundation's board of directors, two members were newly elected to the board of directors and 35 new members were elected to four-year terms on its board of trustees. Additionally, 82 members were reelected to the board of trustees.

The KSU Foundation now has 346 trustees serving as the university's premier advocates, ambassadors and investors. The KSU Foundation's board of directors oversees management, control and supervision of the KSU Foundation's business and affairs.

Reelected to the board of directors were Leanne Caret, Argyle, Texas, and Sue Barsamian, Park City, Utah.

Mark Gardiner, Ashland, and John Buser, Dallas, Texas, were each elected to their first three-year term on the board of directors. Buser received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Kansas State University's College of Business Administration. Gardiner received his bachelor's degree in animal science and industry from K-State's College of Agriculture.

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the Smoky Hill Museum. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present “Salina-Flashback Fridays.”

At 119 W. Iron Ave., near downtown, Salina's tallest building, the United Building stands as a 10-story skyscraper that began as a three-story opera house in the late 1800s.

Before it became part of the Salina skyline, it was first the Salina Opera House. It opened its doors in 1878, costing about $20,000 (valued at more than $600,000 today), and its three stories could host 700 patrons.

The Opera House hosted speakers like Susan B. Anthony and the grandson of Fredrick Douglass,&nbsp;Joseph Henry Douglass. 

The building on the southeast corner of North Seventh Street and West Iron Avenue housed multiple businesses from the late 1800s until just after the turn of the century.

In 1912, the Salina Opera House went under renovation and became the New Theatre. Just over a decade later, in the late 1920s, the building was torn down to make way for a 10-story skyscraper.

Charles Shaver, a notable architect of his time, designed the building and was known for his work on churches across the region. However, he utilized an Art Deco style for the significant addition to Salina's skyline.

Notable century-old construction firm Busboom and Rauh Construction Firm built the United Life Building in just one year, from 1929 to 1930.&nbsp;

The modern building featured luxuries of the time, like elevators for the building and early thermostats in each office.

As the building loomed over Salina, it housed businesses like the United Telephone Company, United Realty and Investment Company, Reynolds Tobacco Company, The Kansas Pipeline and Gas Company's general office and multiple insurance offices, attorneys, physicians, surgeons and optometrists.

The large building still houses businesses and organizations like the <a href="https://gscf.org/">Greater Salina Community Foundation</a>, <a href="https://www.kenberk.com/">Kennedy Berkley attorneys office</a> and Complete Surveillance Solutions.

📸 Flashback Friday: Salina Post - Smoky Hill Museum - Vol. 8

CLOUD COUNTY —The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement authorities in north central Kansas are conducting a death investigation after a shooting occurred at a party September 16, in rural Cloud County, according to a media release.

Just before 11:30p.m., a Clay Center resident called the Cloud County Sheriff's office to request help locating a 14-year-old family member. The girl reportedly ran away and was thought to be attending a party near the small community of Aurora, Kansas.

A Cloud County deputy responded to the outdoor field party near 210th Road and Lark Road.&nbsp; High school and college students were in attendance.

&nbsp;The deputy located the girl and tried to convince her to return to her family.&nbsp; As he was escorting her to his patrol vehicle, she pulled out a firearm and shot herself. The deputy did not draw his firearm.

The deputy and an off-duty firefighter attempted life-saving measures. Shortly after midnight, the was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp;

Multiple individuals attending the party witnessed the incident. Law enforcement is interviewing&nbsp; them as part of the investigation.

KBI investigating death of 14-year-old girl at outdoor party

Lily Gladstone got her breakout role in Martin Scorsese’s epic crime drama&nbsp;Killers of the Flower Moon, and in director Morrisa Maltz’s debut feature&nbsp;The Unknown Country, the actress solidifies her place as one of today’s most compelling American stars.

 It’s impossible to take your eyes off her. Many actors play characters who are stoic, reserved, serene; none are better than Gladstone at making viewers deeply invested in discovering what she’s thinking behind that quiet exterior. Her performance is the linchpin of Maltz’s film, an existential road trip of the kind that&nbsp;male&nbsp;actors often took in ‘70’s cinema.

 We don’t know why Tana (Gladstone) is leaving Minnesota, alone, at the start of the film. Is she running from something? Seeking something? Maybe it’s simply to lose herself in the land, as stunningly photographed as it is by cinematographer Andrew Hajek. T

ana doesn’t remain alone, however; on her cross-country journey she meets several interesting individuals, and the subtle pleasure of the film is how everyone gets a unique, complex inner life that “secondary” characters are never granted. It’s as if Maltz and Gladstone (who co-wrote the film) are telling us that no one is one-dimensional; everyone has a story worth hearing. 

Tana’s odyssey is slightly surreal at time but never fantastical—which is crucial because Gladstone, a Native American actress, and Tana, a Native American protagonist, could’ve been treated as “exotic” curiosities rather than allowed to be&nbsp;people&nbsp;first. 

Human connections bridge great physical and cultural distances, and this poetic, gentle film proves this uplifting truth with effortless grace and quiet eloquence.

Salina Art Center Cinema presents 'The Unknown Country' Sept. 22-27

Students from Salina South High School paraded through downtown Salina on Wednesday evening. After the parade students met at Salina South's stadium for a pep rally and Homecoming candidate games.

Throughout the week, students participated in "Spirit Week," where students dressed up in various themes. On Friday, during the home game against Maize High School, a school staff will announce Homecoming King and Queen.

On Tuesday Salina Public Schools announced the recipients of the USD 305 Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the 2023-2024 School Year.

Cottonwood special education teacher, Kelsey Wood was named SPS Elementary Teacher of the Year.

According to a statement from Salina Public Schools, "Wood doesn't merely teach; she builds a nurturing classroom environment that radiates acceptance and safety."

The statement continued by saying that Wood's unique skill set allows her to communicate with empathy, never compromising on technical precision.&nbsp;

Mike Hall, a math teacher at Central High School, was named the Salina Public Schools Secondary Teacher of the Year earlier this week.&nbsp;

According to a statement from Salina Public Schools, "Mike consistently turns challenges into opportunities with his solution-oriented mindset and his versatility is inspiring."

The statement continued saying, "Mike is dedicated to fostering potential and growth in every student - shaping minds and shaping futures."

Every year since 1974, SPS has selected teacher(s) of the year. Nomination forms are submitted to the building administrator and a committee comprised of past SPS Teacher of the Year recipients and current SPS administration.

Each year two instructors are nominated for the Kansas Teacher of the Year program. The awards are sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education and affiliated with the National Teacher of the Year program.

Salina Public Schools names recpients of Teacher of the Year awards

Late Thursday evening, the Salina Poice Department responded to two young children who were taken from protective custody by 21-year-old Salinan Katherine Lynn, their mother, after she violated the custody order.

SPD sergeant Kyle Tonniges said officers arrested Lynn earlier in the day, leading police officers to take the two young children, aged 2 and 3, into police custody and eventually to a home in Salina.

At 10 p.m., Lynn appeared at the 1500 block of Dover Drive and "walked right in the house without any permission, took her kids and went home," Tonniges said.&nbsp;

The Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair takes place on Saturday, September 23 in and around the Smoky Hill Museum at 211 W. Iron Avenue in downtown Salina. The Street Fair has no entry cost and is a day to celebrate the Old West with a chili cook-off, music, activities, food vendors and, of course, the museum itself.

The Old West family fun starts with a parade down Santa Fe at 10:00 am. Then down and around the Museum at 211 W Iron Avenue, there will be an Old West chuck wagon, horseshoe tossing, roping, archery, chili cook-off, historic demonstrators, free make-and-take crafts, caricaturists, Color Me Crazy airbrush tattoos and more.

The public tasting and voting for the chili cook-off will be from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. and it only costs $2 to sample chili from eight booths. The People’s Choice award and best decorated booth winners will be announced at 2:00 p.m. on the main stage.

Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair, travel back to The Old West Sept. 23

GREAT BEND&nbsp;– A host of butterflies, bees and bugs will all be in residence at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center’s (592 NE K 156 Hwy, Great Bend) annual Butterfly Festival from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 23. 

In addition to a variety of family-friendly activities, “The Instars,” Steve Craig and Amy Short, will present their “Butterfly Magic” show – a melding of humor and magic that illustrates the astonishing butterfly life cycle.

“This year promises to be a much better year for the monarch butterfly migration, as millions undertake their annual fall flight to Mexico,” said Pam Martin, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks education specialist.

Nets and tags will be available for those who want to capture and tag monarch butterflies ­– a critical citizen-science effort that helps track monarch migration activity. 

To do this, participants head out into the flower-filled fields and shelter belt around KWEC to spot monarchs, with tagging leaders stationed along the trail to help with the tagging process. For the past several years, monarchs tagged at the event were recovered at three Mexico roost sites.

New this year, a grant from the Kansas Wildscape Foundation’s Outdoors for Kansas (OK) Kids program is being used to sponsor a wide selection of outdoor-related prizes for youth attendees. Prizes include insect nets and carriers, field guides, nature vests, t-shirts, exploration kits, and more.&nbsp;

In addition to butterflies, festival guests can also expect to see walking stick insects, caterpillars, chrysalises, fluorescing scorpions; and enjoy fun activities like crafting and games. Plan to spend the morning, as door prizes will be presented around noon, along with free milkweed plants (one per family while supplies last). This article focuses on supporting the well-being of Kansas farmers and ranchers and focuses on understanding mental exhaustion.&nbsp;

Understanding this condition of mental exhaustion is not new. However, unless you have truly experienced extreme tiredness or fatigue, you may ask, why am I reading this article? 

During my military days in the United States Army, I found myself nearest to this state of mental exhaustion. I was trying to adjust to the ways of the army, sleep schedules, military food, environments, and increased physical fitness that stretched my well-being. Well, that was nearly&nbsp;34 years ago, and yes, I managed to survive and complete years of service as a Supply Sergeant and Unit Armorer. 

That lived experience was my introduction to mental exhaustion. Sharing this information about mental exhaustion can include physical and emotional symptoms: anger, sadness, and a sense of powerlessness. Furthermore, you may struggle with your work performance and overall productivity. However, chronic or long-term stress can play a role in mental exhaustion. 

Think back to the last time you felt exhausted after a long day. Your body may have been tired, but your brain probably didn’t feel too sharp, either. Maybe all you felt like doing was a low-key activity. Conversely, mental exhaustion can affect physical performance, making exercise and other tasks that require endurance feel considerably more physically taxing and demanding.

Simply put, mental exhaustion can happen when your brain receives too much stimulation or maintains an intense level of activity without rest. You might notice mental exhaustion, sometimes called mental fatigue, if you:

• Often work or study for long hours with limited breaks.

• Spend time each day dealing with overwhelming responsibilities.

• Devote a lot of energy each day to thinking through problems, worries, or other sources of stress.

It’s not uncommon to feel physically fatigued from time to time, and the same holds true for mental fatigue. Mental fatigue can affect your ability to think, solve problems, or process and regulate emotions. Eventually, it can lead to challenges in your daily life and relationships.

Ongoing mental exhaustion can begin to affect your everyday activities and behavior. You might find yourself constantly putting off tasks at work or around the house.

Mental exhaustion can happen to anyone and can’t always be avoided. Taking a few preemptive steps can help lower your chances of experiencing ongoing mental fatigue.

You might be mentally exhausted if you work or live in a high-stress environment. Being in a high-pressure job can undoubtedly contribute to this phenomenon. Furthermore, you are at an increased risk of developing unwanted symptoms if you lack support, healthy coping skills, and proper stress management skills. 

Mental exhaustion can have serious consequences — not just for your physical and emotional health. A physician or therapist can offer more guidance on treatments for mental fatigue, resources to cope with stress, and other supportive strategies.

KSRE: What is mental exhaustion?

As the Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus settles into the new academic year, the campus continues to elevate the goal of developing global leaders on the campus. 

K-State Salina now offers a new leadership course taught in collaboration with K-State's Staley School of Leadership. All incoming students participate in this introductory course, ensuring leadership competencies are developed for all K-State Salina students. Students who complete the course will also have the option to continue their education in leadership and obtain a minor in leadership studies.

The leadership studies minor is a complement to any degree option. During these courses, students will work toward personal leadership development and a practical framework to further self-awareness, values and purpose. The academic minor, through the Staley School of Leadership, will also help K-State Salina students become involved in the Salina community with service projects in support of organizations working on community challenges.

"Preparing our students for life after graduation and ensuring that they are career-ready is a huge emphasis on this campus," said Kyle Chamberlin, assistant dean of student life at K-State Salina. "With the competencies and quality instruction that the Staley School of Leadership is known for, we are expecting future graduates of K-State Salina to be not only career-ready but also ready to be leaders in their respective industries the moment they accept their first jobs."

Faculty, staff and administration are also getting the opportunity to practice their leadership skills by completing leadership education through the Kansas Leadership Center's Leadership Transformation Grant. This grant allows the campus to offer research-backed professional leadership development courses to its staff. This is the second year that K-State Salina has qualified for the grant, and more than 40% of employees have taken advantage of the opportunity.

According to staff at the Kansas Leadership Center, or KLC, the training fosters leadership for stronger, healthier and more prosperous communities in the state. KLC is working with K-State Salina to help create a culture of leadership that embraces change and tackles challenges through its unique approach. Those who complete the courses gain competencies and skills that encourage leadership to come from anyone — regardless of title or position.

With leadership engagement from faculty and staff continuing to grow, K-State Salina welcomed Julia Fabris McBride, chief civic leadership development officer of the Kansas Leadership Center and co-author of the book "When Everyone Leads," to be the featured guest speaker at the campus's annual Fall Kickoff. Fabris McBride took the opportunity at the yearly event to inspire and mobilize the faculty and staff of K-State Salina to practice their leadership skills.

"Our campus was thrilled to welcome Julia to speak with our faculty and staff," said Kirsten Zoller, executive director of strategic initiatives at K-State Salina. "Julia brought a unique perspective based on her years of professional leadership and management. This presentation encouraged our campus to continue to practice leadership and reminded us how important our mission of developing global leaders in aerospace and technology is."

As K-State Salina continues its dedication to leadership development, the campus hopes to foster a culture of leaders eager to embark on new challenges in support of the new strategic initiatives as part of the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan.

 </figure><a href="https://www.k-state.edu/communications-marketing/">Submitted by K-State Division of Communication and Marketing</a>As the Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus settles into the new academic year, the campus continues to elevate the goal of developing global leaders on the campus. K-State Salina now offers a new leadership course taught in collaboration with K-State's Staley School of Leadership. All incoming students participate in this introductory course, ensuring leadership competencies are developed for all K-State Salina students. Students who complete the course will also have the option to continue their education in leadership and obtain a minor in leadership studies.The leadership studies minor is a complement to any degree option. During these courses, students will work toward personal leadership development and a practical framework to further self-awareness, values and purpose. The academic minor, through the Staley School of Leadership, will also help K-State Salina students become involved in the Salina community with service projects in support of organizations working on community challenges."Preparing our students for life after graduation and ensuring that they are career-ready is a huge emphasis on this campus," said Kyle Chamberlin, assistant dean of student life at K-State Salina. "With the competencies and quality instruction that the Staley School of Leadership is known for, we are expecting future graduates of K-State Salina to be not only career-ready but also ready to be leaders in their respective industries the moment they accept their first jobs."Faculty, staff and administration are also getting the opportunity to practice their leadership skills by completing leadership education through the Kansas Leadership Center's Leadership Transformation Grant. This grant allows the campus to offer research-backed professional leadership development courses to its staff. This is the second year that K-State Salina has qualified for the grant, and more than 40% of employees have taken advantage of the opportunity.According to staff at the Kansas Leadership Center, or KLC, the training fosters leadership for stronger, healthier and more prosperous communities in the state. KLC is working with K-State Salina to help create a culture of leadership that embraces change and tackles challenges through its unique approach. Those who complete the courses gain competencies and skills that encourage leadership to come from anyone — regardless of title or position.With leadership engagement from faculty and staff continuing to grow, K-State Salina welcomed Julia Fabris McBride, chief civic leadership development officer of the Kansas Leadership Center and co-author of the book "When Everyone Leads," to be the featured guest speaker at the campus's annual Fall Kickoff. Fabris McBride took the opportunity at the yearly event to inspire and mobilize the faculty and staff of K-State Salina to practice their leadership skills."Our campus was thrilled to welcome Julia to speak with our faculty and staff," said Kirsten Zoller, executive director of strategic initiatives at K-State Salina. "Julia brought a unique perspective based on her years of professional leadership and management. This presentation encouraged our campus to continue to practice leadership and reminded us how important our mission of developing global leaders in aerospace and technology is."As K-State Salina continues its dedication to leadership development, the campus hopes to foster a culture of leaders eager to embark on new challenges in support of the new strategic initiatives as part of the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan.
