The Symphony will open the Passage-themed concert with Barber’s thoughtful Adagio for Strings. The orchestra will then be joined by flutist Daniel Velasco for a performance of Michael Daugherty’s virtuosic and heart-wrenching Trail of Tears, a strikingly beautiful work that demonstrates how the human spirit deals with upheaval and adversity.

Following intermission, the orchestra will present Penderecki’s intensely romantic and lush Second Symphony, “Christmas.” The concert will end with Bach’s beloved Sheep May Safely Graze.

Daniel Velasco is an award-winning flutist whose “standout” and “vibrant” performances (Miami Herald) have taken him around the world. He has been a soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador, among many others. He has also been featured as a guest performer across the United States. Orchestral festivals include the Latin American Orchestra and Chautauqua Music Festival, as well as tours through Chile and Central America with the Orchestra of the Americas. Velasco is currently the flute professor at the University of Kansas.

Michael Daugherty is one of the most frequently commissioned, programmed, and recorded composers on the American concert music scene today, hailed by The Times (UK) as “a master icon maker” with a “maverick imagination, fearless structural sense and meticulous ear.”

Daugherty first came to international attention when the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performed his Metropolis Symphony at Carnegie Hall in 1994. Since that time, his music has entered the orchestral, band and chamber music repertoire and made him, according to the League of American Orchestras, one of the ten most performed living American composers.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon blocks any part of the Sun. On Saturday, October 14, 2023, a solar eclipse will be visible (weather permitting) in North, Central, and South America. All 49 continental U.S. states will experience at least a partial eclipse, as will most of Canada and all countries in Central and South America.


During a partial or annular (ring) solar eclipse, such as the one on October 14, 2023, there is no time when it is safe to look directly at the Sun without using a special-purpose solar filter that complies with the transmission requirements of the ISO
12312-2 international standard.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When will the partial eclipse be visible?

The Eclipse will begin at 10:21 a.m. CDT. The max visibility point will occur at 11:47 a.m. and the partial eclipse will conclude at 1:19 p.m.&nbsp;

Partial solar eclipse visible in Kansas on Saturday

During the month of Oct., the Salina Post will be publishing a series of profiles introducing the community to the six Salina City Commission candidates and school board member candidates for USD 306, USD 305, and USD 307.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Grace, Anna, and Nathan. I graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1993. I am a member of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish. 

<b>Please explain why you are running for city commission:</b>

I have always had an interest in local politics. I always wanted to follow in the footsteps of my Grandpa John Burgess. He was on the commission for 6 years and was mayor in 1984. In the late 90s and early 2000s, I served on two terms of the parks and rec advisory board. I then took off time to raise a family. 

In 2022 I was appointed to the City Planning Commission and also became the Planning Commission liaison to the Salina Heritage Commission. I have learned a lot about city government by serving on these boards. One of my bigger positions is backing the Salina Police Department and the Salina Fire Dept. My goal is to make sure they are both fully funded and have all that they need to come home safely from their jobs every day. 

This year I was asked to be on the board of the Police Excellency Foundation of Salina. I gladly accepted. I am so happy to be part of something that helps out with the safety and well-being of the Police officers. I look forward to helping with the housing shortage, and the homeless situation as well. I want to help grow Salina and make it a great place for families to live.

2023 Election: Candidate for Salina City Comm., Jerry Ivey II

K-State cattle experts offer ways that cow-calf producers can incorporate practices for longevity

When building a business, many will agree it is important to incorporate management practices with long-term goals in mind.

In much the same way, many cow-calf operators are looking for ways to make their herds economically and environmentally sustainable, said the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute experts speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/10/06/whats-next-in-genetic-technologies-supplemental-protein-selecting-for-sustainability/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast. Joining in the discussion was Bob Weaber, K-State beef cattle geneticist and head of the Eastern Kansas Research and Extension Center.

“By improving the efficiency of the cow herd we can make dramatic improvements in greenhouse gas emission,” Weaber said. “Producers that are focused on resource allocation and efficiency often capture energy in a way that yields more profitability for their operation.”

K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster agreed with Weaber and added, “When we make the conversion of forage to calf more efficient, we are improving our sustainability and we are decreasing the amount of greenhouse gas emitted per unit of product.”

The experts agree that there are tools that cow-calf producers can leverage when looking to improve the stayability of cows in the herd.

One of those that has gained recent attention is a product recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that can be used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, said K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers.

“Now that there is a process for approval through the FDA, I expect there will be more non-genetic tools available in the near future for those who are focused on sustainability,” Lubbers said.

Along with that, Weaber said that some beef breed associations are using data to help producers meet their operational goals.

“A number of breed associations publish a sustained fertility or stayability EPD, but the reality is while those are important genetic evaluations, it’s a lowly heritable trait,” Weaber said.

He added: “We can make meaningful improvement genetically but it also means that management and environment play a disproportionately larger role in how long a cow lasts in the herd.”

Weaber said the cows need to match their environment in terms of mature cow size and metabolic efficiency. He also said that they need to be balanced in their lactation.

The other measure that producers need to account for, according to K-State veterinarian Bob Larson, is reproduction.

“By using the tools of breeding soundness exams, pregnancy checking and body condition evaluations, producers should have a herd with a high percentage of cows exposed to bulls that raise a healthy calf to weaning. And that is reproductive efficiency,” Larson said.

Fall harvest is in full swing on our central Kansas farm.

Do you live to work or work to live? This question of mindset and philosophy has been a source of intergenerational tension for a while now. Baby boomers see working hard to provide for their families and millennials work to support a great life outside their working hours. In the end both groups are working to make a living.

In my world, neither of these is correct; work takes on many forms in my life — a career where my living is earned, jobs completed around the farm that keep the place running and time spent on community activities. They are work in function but don’t merely represent earnings to provide for a family or the pride in a job well done. These things are my work and my life.

For weeks our house has been in fall harvest mode which means non-stop action. Someone is likely driving a combine or grain cart, fueling or shuttling vehicles, farming to prep the soil, running a drill and sometimes all of these are happening at once. Our house feels like a rest stop where meals are eaten, and the shorter days mean leaving and coming home in the dark. We exercise communication and teamwork as we put the needs of the farm over our own comfort. It’s chaotic, exciting and exhausting.

Life off the farm doesn’t stop for harvest. Recently we helped run our local Oktoberfest to raise money for community philanthropy. One of the best things about this event is the group of 16 people who serve on the planning committee to make it happen. This group of working professionals and business owners is made up of parents to small children (including three sets of twins), leaders in churches or serving on community and civic boards, and we even have some pursuing advanced degrees. Everyone on the committee is stepping away from busy lives; we are making sacrifices and working because we take ownership in making our community a great place to live.

My “real job” is fairly exciting this time of year, too. Most of the cooperatives employees are focused on harvest and helping our members get wheat in the ground. My focus is on planting a different type of seeds. The start of the school year provides lots of opportunities for me to give tours of our facilities and classroom presentations about the value of cooperatives, working at the cooperative and making the decision to live rural by choice.

Farmers are often recognized for their work ethic which might be because to farmers work is more than just doing a job, it is our life. We aren’t paid by hours or jobs done; we spend months investing time, energy and resources not knowing how much or even if it will all pay off in the end.

This is the work-life philosophy that underlies my life. Much of what I do has little instant gratification or payoff. I have to have faith that my time, effort and skills will yield something great in the future.

They say that if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life. I see it slightly differently, if you love what you do, you gladly work hard to make things happen. When you fill your life with work that you love or do it for people you love it becomes so much easier.

The question shouldn’t be living to work or working to live? It should be are you working to make a living or a life?

On Oct. 10, 1845, the U.S. Naval Academy was established in Annapolis, Maryland.

In 1911, Chinese revolutionaries launched an uprising that led to the collapse of the Qing (or Manchu) Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China.

In 1935, the George Gershwin opera “Porgy and Bess,” featuring an all-Black cast, opened on Broadway, beginning a run of 124 performances.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy, responding to the Thalidomide birth defects crisis, signed an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act requiring pharmaceutical companies to prove that their products were safe and effective prior to marketing.

Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival is back for its second year, and it's bigger and better than ever.

The streets of downtown Salina, KS have been transformed into a vibrant canvas of art. This event features a variety of world-class muralists from around the globe, each bringing their own unique style of art to the area.

"This is an amazing opportunity for our community to experience something truly special," said festival organizer Eric Montoy. "We'll have 7 artists painting at 7 different locations scattered around downtown Salina This festival is truly unique in the fact that it is an invite only event for the artists. They are hand selected by our curator, Joe Iurato, based on their style, portfolio of work and relevance in today’s mural scene. And let’s not forget we will be welcoming back legendary photographer Martha Cooper for her second year at Boom.”

The inaugural Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival was held last year and was a huge success. Attendees were able to witness stunning murals being created by a diverse group of artists that are still visible throughout Salina downtown today.&nbsp;<br><br>This year's festival promises even more exciting eye candy that you won't want to miss out on.

October 5th – Artists will be painting at various locations in downtown Salina, and the murals will be in full swing.

October 6th - Join us at 6:30 PM at the Salina Art Center for 'First Friday'. The highlight of the day will be the 2023 BOOM! Salina Artist Panel Discussion and the Photography Show featuring the 2022 BOOM! Salina works of Martha Cooper and Tanner Colvin.

First Friday by Salina Downtown will also feature other live music and art galleries.

October 7th - Wrap up the festival with a day full of live music at the Love Salina Stage in Campbell Plaza next to the Prickly Pear. Bands will be performing continuously from 12 pm to 10 pm to keep the festive energy flowing.

PichiAvo (Pichi, b. 1977; Avo, b. 1985) is a duo of artists from Valencia, Spain. Recognized for their skill at creating connections between painting and sculpture in urban settings, they adopt a thoroughly innovative approach in their artistic fusions. A balanced combination of classical art and the most contemporary urban art can be identified in their work. From the outset PichiAvo shunned artistic individuality, joining forces to create an absolutely unique body of work using a conceptually urban idiom, both in the street and studio.

ADD FUEL (Diogo Machado) is a Portuguese visual artist born in 1980 with a degree in Graphic Design from Lisbon's IADE – Creative University. He spent several years working in design studios in Portugal and Munich, until he started focusing on his artistic work in 2007. ADD FUEL is known for combining traditional tile designs with contemporary visual elements to create original and emotional motifs, playing with the viewer's perception and possibilities of interpretation. He has exhibited his art in galleries and museums worldwide and has also created several public art interventions. ADD FUEL currently resides and works in Cascais, Portugal.

EL MAC (Miles MacGregor) is an urban artist known for his striking visual aesthetic and unique style. Born in Los Angeles, he began developing his artistic skills at an early age. He is famous for his large-scale murals that incorporate photorealistic portraiture and Chicano art traditions, showing a deep appreciation for his cultural heritage. EL MAC has explored a myriad of themes in his work, such as spirituality, identity, and social justice. He has been commissioned for high-profile mural projects all over the world, including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in the United States and the Mesa Contemporary Arts Center in Arizona. EL MAC's artistic philosophy prioritizes creating work that communicates a sense of connection and authenticity

to its viewers. His focus on creating art that reflects a diverse range of cultures and experiences has cemented his reputation as one of the most influential urban artists working today.

MadC (Claudia Walde) is a German urban contemporary artist born in the 1980s. She began her artistic journey with a spray can as a teenager and has since become a famous name in the world of street art and urban contemporary art. MadC holds two graphic design degrees and has authored multiple books on street art. Her exhibitions have been held in galleries worldwide, and she has painted numerous murals globally, showcasing her unique style that draws its roots in graffiti and deploys vividly colored, dynamic calligraphy with layers to depict energy and emotions. Her notable commissioned works include the permanent glass installations in the Museum Reinhard Ernst in Germany, opening in 2023. MadC's work has been featured in prominent media outlets such as National Geographic, The Guardian, and Der Spiegel. She continues to redefine urban art globally, leaving her colorful mark wherever she goes.

Pat Perry (b. Michigan, 1991) is an American artist primarily painting, drawing, photographing, and implementing large-scale outdoor murals around the world. Many of Pat’s projects have supported various social causes including cooperative projects with the Beehive Design Collective, Apt Arts, the UN Commissioner for Refugees, and No More Deaths. Recent solo exhibitions include shows at Hashimoto Contemporary NYC, Takashi Murakami’s Hidari Zingaro Gallery in Tokyo, and a museum show at UICA in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Pat lives and works in Detroit.

Andrea von Bujdoss, known as Queen Andrea, is a NYC-based artist celebrated for her work as a muralist, graffiti artist, typographer, and graphic designer. She began her artistic journey as a graffiti writer in the early 1990s, developing her skills to become a significant influence in the street art space. Her work uses a bold mix of color and design, and she has created notable works everywhere from the walls of NYC’s urban landscape to collaborations with major brands internationally. Her artwork has been shown in exhibitions around the world, cementing her reputation as one of the most influential artists in the graffiti, streetwear, and urban culture arenas. Her most recent paintings are intricate and intense explorations of geometry, color, and form that create fantastical, bright worlds of abstraction. Through her art, Queen Andrea continues to challenge norms and inspire others in the urban art scene.

American Born. 1972. I was raised in the working-class neighborhood of Highlandtown in Baltimore, MD. My interest in art began with NYC subway graffiti in the mid-1980s. Having

learned printmaking methods in high school, I eventually shifted my technique toward stenciling. In 2000 I began exhibiting my work. Adapting images from photographs and working with spray paint, stencils, and paper to create interior/exterior works, I seek to convey an authentic contemporary document that illustrates the triumph of the human spirit as experienced by those in underrepresented urban and rural environments. I work and live in Queens, New York with my wife and two children.

Martha Cooper is a documentary photographer who has specialized in shooting urban vernacular art and architecture for over forty years. In 1977, Martha moved from Rhode Island to New York City and worked as a staff photographer at the NY Post for three years. During that time, she began to document graffiti and B-Boying, subjects which led to her extensive coverage of early Hip Hop as it emerged from the Bronx. These photos, published worldwide, helped make Hip Hop the predominant international youth movement it is today.

One of KWU’s longtime supporters will deepen its connection with the university, as Bennington State Bank (BSB) announced additional scholarship and academic support for the institution Monday afternoon.

“We are grateful for the continued support from Bennington State Bank,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “They have been a great friend to the university, particularly to our students coming out of our marketing program. We appreciate their friendship and support and are grateful for the community-focused mindset we share.”

BSB serves as one of the money managers of KWU’s endowment, but has also been a friend of the university for several years. The bank has hired numerous graduates, both MBA and bachelor’s, and shares KWU’s goals of investing in the local community.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to bring on KWU graduates who are incredibly well prepared&nbsp;to excel professionally,” said Darren Gragg, president and CEO of BSB. “We are committed to investing in future generations, and we love that so many Coyotes have roots in this area. There are a lot of good character traits present in people from Kansas, and we want to retain as many of those people as we can. Having KWU in our community is a tremendous asset.”

Bennington State Bank, a family-owned community bank, has offices in eight Kansas cities, including Salina, and estimates that it employs approximately 15 KWU graduates.

The month of October is known for three main holidays or celebrations – Halloween, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Pride.  While these days are amazing to engage in, did you know there are many, many ways to celebrate in October? 

 First and foremost, it is Autumn, which happens to be my most favorite season.  Fall has a whole vibe all its own.  It brings on cozy and layered apparel, cold weather comfort food recipes, and then there is the foliage. 

 October is packed with food-centric holidays, such as National Dessert Day.  As a self-declared foodie, I appreciate this.  There are also creative celebrations, such as National Fine Art Appreciation Day.  October is chock full of fantastic ways to celebrate and I have created a condensed version of several (mostly foodie) reasons to celebrate something for each day in October.  While these may not be for everyone, there is bound to be something for everyone.

I personally could almost be a vegetarian, but I like some things like chicken and turkey way too much to completely sever ties with them.  If this is something up your alley, finding a plant-based version of many popular dishes is simple.  In the spirit of World Vegetarian Day, try some vegetarian recipes in the book Vegetarian Recipes For Everyone by Deborah Madison.

October 2: International Day of Non-Violence

The day represents a time to spread the message of peace and tolerance and is celebrated on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.  Gandhi’s work advocated for nonviolent protest to stand up for freedom and civil rights. October 3: ‘Mean Girls’ Appreciation Day

Who does not love the 2004 movie Mean Girls?  One of my fav’s from that time frame, quotes from the movie are ingrained in pop culture, and the movie featured prominent acting talent.  The movie was written by Tina Fey who is a Saturday Night Live alum and starred in the movie alongside Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tim Meadows, and Amanda Seyfried.  To get your Mean Girls fix and experience “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” or “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen”, check out the DVD or audiobook here at the Library and throw on an extra-large pink polo shirt!

Cinnamon rolls…I mean, need I say more?  Ok, I will.  Whether for breakfast or a late-night hankering fulfillment, cinnamon rolls are perfect for chilly weather.  In my opinion, these are best served warm with freshly brewed coffee or a glass of milk.  For Cinnamon Roll Day, try making some from scratch.  The Salina Public Library has several books on baking with yeast and dough to give you a starting point.  Take a glance through the catalog to find what suits you.  If you are new to this type of baking, even if they do not look that pretty, they are sure to taste delicious with maple, caramel, cream cheese, or any flavor of icing.

People should always be nice to each other, but on this day, keep it at the forefront of your mind and commit to having positive interactions.  Compliment a co-worker whose contributions sometimes go unnoticed, surprise a family member or friend with a “just because” gift, or donate to a local organization.  You never really know what someone is going through, so just be kind.

I do not know about you, but for me, this is one of the most important seasonings you can add to your dishes.  You can never have too much garlic!  For Garlic Lovers Day, order your favorite garlic-centric dish such as a pizza with extra garlic dipping sauce, garlic knots, or garlic chicken and broccoli.  The possibilities are basically endless because garlic is delicious in a plethora of savory dishes.  Get some inspiration in the User’s Guide To Garlic by Stephen Fulder.

Plain black coffee serves its purpose – caffeine.  However, iced coffee is not only delicious and refreshing, it affects the body in a different way than the traditional hot brew.  Drop for drop, you are getting the same amount of caffeine.  However, most people drink hot coffee at a different rate than cold coffee, which impacts how quickly the caffeine kicks in.  The faster you drink it, the faster the effects are felt.  I do not know about you, but I prefer my caffeine fix to come with a quickness.  

Frappes originated in Greece when a businessman was unable to locate a hot water source to make instant coffee.  He used cold water and ice instead, and the rest is history.  There are many different flavor combinations and establishments where you can experience a frappe-style beverage, so pick your favorite and enjoy.

If you have never tasted a pierogi, you are seriously missing out.  Pierogies are nothing short of tiny heavenly plump pockets of deliciousness.  The first time I tried one was when I went perusing local shops in Boston.  They come stuffed with your choice of meats, cheeses, potatoes, or veggies, pierogies are fried in butter, and topped with the likes of sour cream or some sort of savory gravy.  If you are feeling froggy, make some dessert pierogies with apples and cinnamon or strawberries and cream cheese.  Maybe even make a quick glaze with confectioner sugar and milk.

October 9: International Beer and Pizza Day

Pizza is an all around popular dish, no matter how you prefer to top it.  Why not wash it down with an ice-cold beer for the perfect pairing?  The bitterness of the beer will cut the richness of the pizza, leaving you with a perfectly balanced palate. Angel food cake is a delicious blank slate with its light and fluffy texture.  Grab one from the grocery store or local bakery and top it with coconut icing, chocolate frosting, or berries and whipped cream for a quick and easy sweet treat.  

Southern food has long embodied some of my favorite cuisines.  From Po’ Boys and gumbo to fried chicken and peach cobbler, the South knows how to throw down in the kitchen and has a rich history to boot.  Test your Southern cooking skills by starting with some simple recipes like red beans and rice or banana pudding.  Use the Southern Heirloom Cooking: 200 Treasured Feel-Good Recipes by Norma Jean McQueen Haydel.  Not only do these dishes showcase the delicious flavors of the South, but they are packed with history.  While making a Southern meal, look into the history of the dish you decide to make.  Then you can feed your belly, your mind, and your soul simultaneously.

The state food of Louisiana is gumbo.  With ingredients such as fresh shellfish or sausage, delicious stock, along with bell peppers, onions, and celery, homemade gumbo is versatile and packed with flavor.  You are able to utilize what you have on hand as there are no set rules.  Add your favorite hot sauce or Cajun seasoning for an extra kick to celebrate this day.

Grab a handful and pop them in your mouth.  Better yet, sort them by color before eating them.  I love blue ones.  What can’t you do with an M&amp;M?  The options are endless: bake them in cookies or bars, put them on top of ice cream or pies, decorate a cake, or eat them all on their own.  While the original plain M&amp;Ms were created in 1941, these days there are several other varieties, including peanut, peanut butter, mint, coffee, and caramel.  Choose your favorite way to enjoy these candy-coated chocolates and celebrate National M&amp;M Day!

If you have been looking for an excuse to bake a pie or whip up a banana split, National Dessert Day is the perfect day to do it. Indulge in your favorite delicious dessert on this day, or try a new recipe.  You cannot go wrong when it comes to dessert.

If you do not know what a cheese curd is or have never partaken in one, what are you doing with your life?  No one ever said the name cheese curd was the most appealing, however, these deep-fried blobs of cheese are so insanely tasty that most can overlook that.  Whether you chow on some cheese curds for a snack, enjoy them as an appetizer before the main course, eat them as a side dish, National Cheese Curd Day is the time to get your cheese curd on.

Grab your cocktail glass and raise your pinkies—it’s time to toast to National Liqueur Day.  A liqueur is an alcoholic drink composed of spirits and other flavorings such as sugar, fruits, herbs, and spices.  Often served with or after dessert, they are typically heavily sweetened and un-aged unlike its cousin beer.  Sipped straight or mixed into a cocktail, liqueurs can add richness, sweetness, and warmth to nearly any happy hour. Gaudy refers to the tasteless use of overly bright, often clashing colors or excessive ornamentation on clothing.  On this day, grab the loudest, flashiest, and gaudiest getup in your closet and celebrate Wear Something Gaudy Day.  Compare your choice of attire with friends, family, and coworkers, have a contest for the gaudiest outfit, and enjoy a day filled with laughter and fun!

October 18: National Chocolate Cupcake Day

There is something about a chocolate cupcake that feels decadent, even though it is a handheld cake.  Whip up a batch of chocolate cupcakes to celebrate this dessert-themed holiday. Layer on the chocolate flavor with some chocolate frosting or go with another classic combination, such as buttercream or peanut butter frosting.

While old friends are staples, there is always room to make new connections.  You never know where you will find a new acquaintance who can become your new best friend.  So for National New Friends Day, strike up a conversation with a stranger or make a plan to hang out with an acquaintance, and find that common ground that could lead to friendship.  Explore the Salina Public Library’s calendar of events for opportunities to connect with individuals who share similar interests.

Finding fresh peaches or strawberries in the middle of winter is no easy task.  However, preserving your fruits in alcohol makes it possible to enjoy seasonal flavors all year long—and National Brandied Fruit Day is the perfect time to try this.  All you need is the fruit of your choice, brown sugar, white sugar, your favorite brandy, and at least one month of preserving time.

The Back To The Future movie series is an iconic 1980s flick.  October 21 is symbolic in the popular and epic movie series “Back to the Future,” as the day Marty and Doc travel to help save his family.  If you have not watched this series yet, head over to the Salina Public Library and check out the trilogy on DVD.  Do you also need a DVD player to watch this or other movies?  We have you covered in that area as well.  Whether you are already a fan or a newbie, pop some popcorn and sit down to enjoy this movie tonight.

While I prefer soft and chewy, slightly salted pretzels with cheese dip, other types of pretzels have long been a snack staple.  Having been present in North America since sometime in the late 18th century, pretzels come in a variety of flavors, shapes, sizes, glazes, and even as pizza.  Be sure to enjoy some pretzels on this day.

October 23: National Boston Cream Pie Day

Boston cream is a weakness of mine.  A donut, pie, cake, anything Boston Cream affiliated is alright by me.  That sweet delicious custard paired with chocolate is so satisfying.  Grab something Boston Cream from your local bakery or make your own for National Boston Cream Pie Day.

Bologna is not on my list of favorites, but some people really enjoy it.  This luncheon meat usually contains pork and various seasonings, but it also can be made out of other meats such as beef and there is even a vegetarian bologna.  If you have never tried it, make yourself a bologna sandwich in honor of National Bologna Day.

October 25: National Fine Art Appreciation Day

National Fine Art Appreciation Day falls on the birthday of artist Pablo Picasso.  To commemorate the day, try your hand at any artistic expression you enjoy, whether it be painting, dance, photography, music, or otherwise.  Art is subjective so engage in something that makes you happy.  Peruse the Salina Public Library’s calendar of events to find out when the next Gallery 708 showing is taking place.

With Halloween in close proximity, the pumpkins are out in full force and the possibilities of how to use one is vast.  Create an amazing carved pumpkin for your doorstep from Pumpkin Carving!: A Show-How Guide by Renee Kurilla, toast pumpkin seeds with your favorite seasonings, or blend pumpkin flesh into baked goods for seasonal flavor.

Recalling the taste of beer is not the most pleasant in my opinion.  That being said, there are many individuals who enjoy it and there is actually more to American beers than those bitter, flavorless brews.  In fact, the American craft beer movement has ushered in a golden age of beer.  For American Beer Day, check out your local brewery for some new-to-you beers.

Chocolate, whether dark, milk, white, and spiked with nuts and other goodies, is on my list of life’s greatest pleasures.  If you have not already treated yourself on National Chocolate Cupcake Day, or even if you already have, today is another good day to indulge in chocolate. I am a dog mom, however, if you are a cat parent, you know cats have many characteristics to love and celebrate.  They are absolutely adorable, cuddly (sometimes), and amusingly judgmental.  Today, give your feline a little extra love by extending playtime, treating it to a fun new toy, or offering a bit of catnip.

Moldy casserole.  Chicken that regrew its legs.  Spoiled milk.  A mystery blob wrapped in tinfoil.  Your refrigerator can be a scary place if not maintained.  Today is the day to conquer your procrastination and banish the ghosts of foods past by cleaning and organizing the fridge.  Start by tossing any old or spoiled food.  Then, clean the interior surfaces and produce bins.  Finally, reorganize your food.

After crafting costumes, carving pumpkins, and setting up a scary vignette at the front door, Halloween is finally here.  Kick back and admire your spooky work with a few candy bars before the trick-or-treaters snag them all.

While these days are amazing to engage in, did you know there are many, many ways to celebrate in October? </p><p> First and foremost, it is Autumn, which happens to be my most favorite season.  Fall has a whole vibe all its own.  It brings on cozy and layered apparel, cold weather comfort food recipes, and then there is the foliage. </p><p> October is packed with food-centric holidays, such as National Dessert Day.  As a self-declared foodie, I appreciate this.  There are also creative celebrations, such as National Fine Art Appreciation Day.  October is chock full of fantastic ways to celebrate and I have created a condensed version of several (mostly foodie) reasons to celebrate something for each day in October.  While these may not be for everyone, there is bound to be something for everyone.</p><h2>October 1: World Vegetarian Day</h2><p>I personally could almost be a vegetarian, but I like some things like chicken and turkey way too much to completely sever ties with them.  If this is something up your alley, finding a plant-based version of many popular dishes is simple.  In the spirit of World Vegetarian Day, try some vegetarian recipes in the book Vegetarian Recipes For Everyone by Deborah Madison.</p><h2>October 2: International Day of Non-Violence</h2><p>The day represents a time to spread the message of peace and tolerance and is celebrated on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.  Gandhi’s work advocated for nonviolent protest to stand up for freedom and civil rights.  To learn more about Gandhi, check out All Men are Brothers: Life and Thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi as told in His Own Words by Mahatma Gandhi. </p><h2>October 3: ‘Mean Girls’ Appreciation Day</h2><p>Who does not love the 2004 movie Mean Girls?  One of my fav’s from that time frame, quotes from the movie are ingrained in pop culture, and the movie featured prominent acting talent.  The movie was written by Tina Fey who is a Saturday Night Live alum and starred in the movie alongside Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tim Meadows, and Amanda Seyfried.  To get your Mean Girls fix and experience “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” or “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen”, check out the DVD or audiobook here at the Library and throw on an extra-large pink polo shirt!</p><h2>October 4: Cinnamon Roll Day</h2><p>Cinnamon rolls…I mean, need I say more?  Ok, I will.  Whether for breakfast or a late-night hankering fulfillment, cinnamon rolls are perfect for chilly weather.  In my opinion, these are best served warm with freshly brewed coffee or a glass of milk.  For Cinnamon Roll Day, try making some from scratch.  The Salina Public Library has several books on baking with yeast and dough to give you a starting point.  Take a glance through the catalog to find what suits you.  If you are new to this type of baking, even if they do not look that pretty, they are sure to taste delicious with maple, caramel, cream cheese, or any flavor of icing.</p><h2>October 5: National Be Nice Day </h2><p>People should always be nice to each other, but on this day, keep it at the forefront of your mind and commit to having positive interactions.  Compliment a co-worker whose contributions sometimes go unnoticed, surprise a family member or friend with a “just because” gift, or donate to a local organization.  You never really know what someone is going through, so just be kind.</p><h2>October 6: Garlic Lovers Day</h2><p>I do not know about you, but for me, this is one of the most important seasonings you can add to your dishes.  You can never have too much garlic!  For Garlic Lovers Day, order your favorite garlic-centric dish such as a pizza with extra garlic dipping sauce, garlic knots, or garlic chicken and broccoli.  The possibilities are basically endless because garlic is delicious in a plethora of savory dishes.  Get some inspiration in the User’s Guide To Garlic by Stephen Fulder.</p><h2>October 7: National Frappe Day</h2><p>Plain black coffee serves its purpose – caffeine.  However, iced coffee is not only delicious and refreshing, it affects the body in a different way than the traditional hot brew.  Drop for drop, you are getting the same amount of caffeine.  However, most people drink hot coffee at a different rate than cold coffee, which impacts how quickly the caffeine kicks in.  The faster you drink it, the faster the effects are felt.  I do not know about you, but I prefer my caffeine fix to come with a quickness.  </p><p>Frappes originated in Greece when a businessman was unable to locate a hot water source to make instant coffee.  He used cold water and ice instead, and the rest is history.  There are many different flavor combinations and establishments where you can experience a frappe-style beverage, so pick your favorite and enjoy.</p><h2>October 8: National Pierogi Day</h2><p>If you have never tasted a pierogi, you are seriously missing out.  Pierogies are nothing short of tiny heavenly plump pockets of deliciousness.  The first time I tried one was when I went perusing local shops in Boston.  They come stuffed with your choice of meats, cheeses, potatoes, or veggies, pierogies are fried in butter, and topped with the likes of sour cream or some sort of savory gravy.  If you are feeling froggy, make some dessert pierogies with apples and cinnamon or strawberries and cream cheese.  Maybe even make a quick glaze with confectioner sugar and milk.</p><h2>October 9: International Beer and Pizza Day</h2><p>Pizza is an all around popular dish, no matter how you prefer to top it.  Why not wash it down with an ice-cold beer for the perfect pairing?  The bitterness of the beer will cut the richness of the pizza, leaving you with a perfectly balanced palate. Grab one from the grocery store or local bakery and top it with coconut icing, chocolate frosting, or berries and whipped cream for a quick and easy sweet treat.  </p><h2>October 11: Southern Food Heritage Day</h2><p>Southern food has long embodied some of my favorite cuisines.  From Po’ Boys and gumbo to fried chicken and peach cobbler, the South knows how to throw down in the kitchen and has a rich history to boot.  Test your Southern cooking skills by starting with some simple recipes like red beans and rice or banana pudding.  Use the Southern Heirloom Cooking: 200 Treasured Feel-Good Recipes by Norma Jean McQueen Haydel.  Not only do these dishes showcase the delicious flavors of the South, but they are packed with history.  While making a Southern meal, look into the history of the dish you decide to make.  Then you can feed your belly, your mind, and your soul simultaneously.</p><h2>October 12: National Gumbo Day</h2><p>The state food of Louisiana is gumbo.  With ingredients such as fresh shellfish or sausage, delicious stock, along with bell peppers, onions, and celery, homemade gumbo is versatile and packed with flavor.  You are able to utilize what you have on hand as there are no set rules.  Add your favorite hot sauce or Cajun seasoning for an extra kick to celebrate this day.</p><h2>October 13: ​National M&amp;M Day</h2><p>Grab a handful and pop them in your mouth.  Better yet, sort them by color before eating them.  I love blue ones.  What can’t you do with an M&amp;M?  The options are endless: bake them in cookies or bars, put them on top of ice cream or pies, decorate a cake, or eat them all on their own.  While the original plain M&amp;Ms were created in 1941, these days there are several other varieties, including peanut, peanut butter, mint, coffee, and caramel.  Choose your favorite way to enjoy these candy-coated chocolates and celebrate National M&amp;M Day!</p><h2>October 14: National Dessert Day</h2><p>If you have been looking for an excuse to bake a pie or whip up a banana split, National Dessert Day is the perfect day to do it. Indulge in your favorite delicious dessert on this day, or try a new recipe.  You cannot go wrong when it comes to dessert.</p><h2>October 15: National Cheese Curd Day</h2><p>If you do not know what a cheese curd is or have never partaken in one, what are you doing with your life?  No one ever said the name cheese curd was the most appealing, however, these deep-fried blobs of cheese are so insanely tasty that most can overlook that.  Whether you chow on some cheese curds for a snack, enjoy them as an appetizer before the main course, eat them as a side dish, National Cheese Curd Day is the time to get your cheese curd on.</p><h2>October 16: National Liqueur Day</h2><p>Grab your cocktail glass and raise your pinkies—it’s time to toast to National Liqueur Day.  A liqueur is an alcoholic drink composed of spirits and other flavorings such as sugar, fruits, herbs, and spices.  Often served with or after dessert, they are typically heavily sweetened and un-aged unlike its cousin beer.  Sipped straight or mixed into a cocktail, liqueurs can add richness, sweetness, and warmth to nearly any happy hour. On this day, grab the loudest, flashiest, and gaudiest getup in your closet and celebrate Wear Something Gaudy Day.  Compare your choice of attire with friends, family, and coworkers, have a contest for the gaudiest outfit, and enjoy a day filled with laughter and fun!</p><h2>October 18: National Chocolate Cupcake Day</h2><p>There is something about a chocolate cupcake that feels decadent, even though it is a handheld cake.  Whip up a batch of chocolate cupcakes to celebrate this dessert-themed holiday. Layer on the chocolate flavor with some chocolate frosting or go with another classic combination, such as buttercream or peanut butter frosting.</p><h2>October 19: National New Friends Day</h2><p>While old friends are staples, there is always room to make new connections.  You never know where you will find a new acquaintance who can become your new best friend.  So for National New Friends Day, strike up a conversation with a stranger or make a plan to hang out with an acquaintance, and find that common ground that could lead to friendship.  Explore the Salina Public Library’s calendar of events for opportunities to connect with individuals who share similar interests.</p><h2>October 20: National Brandied Fruit Day</h2><p>Finding fresh peaches or strawberries in the middle of winter is no easy task.  However, preserving your fruits in alcohol makes it possible to enjoy seasonal flavors all year long—and National Brandied Fruit Day is the perfect time to try this.  All you need is the fruit of your choice, brown sugar, white sugar, your favorite brandy, and at least one month of preserving time.</p><h2>October 21: Back to the Future Day</h2><p>The Back To The Future movie series is an iconic 1980s flick.  October 21 is symbolic in the popular and epic movie series “Back to the Future,” as the day Marty and Doc travel to help save his family.  If you have not watched this series yet, head over to the Salina Public Library and check out the trilogy on DVD.  Do you also need a DVD player to watch this or other movies?  We have you covered in that area as well.  Whether you are already a fan or a newbie, pop some popcorn and sit down to enjoy this movie tonight.</p><h2>October 22: Eat a Pretzel Day</h2><p>While I prefer soft and chewy, slightly salted pretzels with cheese dip, other types of pretzels have long been a snack staple.  Having been present in North America since sometime in the late 18th century, pretzels come in a variety of flavors, shapes, sizes, glazes, and even as pizza.  Be sure to enjoy some pretzels on this day.</p><h2>October 23: National Boston Cream Pie Day</h2><p>Boston cream is a weakness of mine.  A donut, pie, cake, anything Boston Cream affiliated is alright by me.  That sweet delicious custard paired with chocolate is so satisfying.  Grab something Boston Cream from your local bakery or make your own for National Boston Cream Pie Day.</p><h2>October 24: National Bologna Day</h2><p>Bologna is not on my list of favorites, but some people really enjoy it.  This luncheon meat usually contains pork and various seasonings, but it also can be made out of other meats such as beef and there is even a vegetarian bologna.  If you have never tried it, make yourself a bologna sandwich in honor of National Bologna Day.</p><h2>October 25: National Fine Art Appreciation Day</h2><p>National Fine Art Appreciation Day falls on the birthday of artist Pablo Picasso.  To commemorate the day, try your hand at any artistic expression you enjoy, whether it be painting, dance, photography, music, or otherwise.  Art is subjective so engage in something that makes you happy.  Peruse the Salina Public Library’s calendar of events to find out when the next Gallery 708 showing is taking place.</p><h2>October 26: National Pumpkin Day</h2><p>With Halloween in close proximity, the pumpkins are out in full force and the possibilities of how to use one is vast.  Create an amazing carved pumpkin for your doorstep from Pumpkin Carving!: A Show-How Guide by Renee Kurilla, toast pumpkin seeds with your favorite seasonings, or blend pumpkin flesh into baked goods for seasonal flavor.</p><h2>October 27: American Beer Day</h2><p>Recalling the taste of beer is not the most pleasant in my opinion.  That being said, there are many individuals who enjoy it and there is actually more to American beers than those bitter, flavorless brews.  In fact, the American craft beer movement has ushered in a golden age of beer.  For American Beer Day, check out your local brewery for some new-to-you beers.</p><h2>October 28: National Chocolate Day</h2><p>Chocolate, whether dark, milk, white, and spiked with nuts and other goodies, is on my list of life’s greatest pleasures.  If you have not already treated yourself on National Chocolate Cupcake Day, or even if you already have, today is another good day to indulge in chocolate. Two skimmers have been located on pumps at a north Salina gas station.

At approximately 11:58 a.m. on Sunday Officers were sent to Petro 2, 2125 North Ninth Street, for the report of a skimmer on a pump, Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges reported Monday.

&nbsp;"While an employee was out there wiping down the pumps he noticed a piece on the exterior that didn't look like it belonged there. He took a closer look and realized it was a skimmer attached to the front of the pump," Tonniges said.

Tonngies also said a portion of the skimmer was located inside the pump.&nbsp; After checking other pumps located at Petro 2, officers discovered similar wiring at a second pump.&nbsp;

Tonniges said no victims have reported their fincacial information compromised in connection to the skimmers found at Petro 2.&nbsp;
