TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly announced today that 58 projects at 37 airports have been selected to receive $14.3 million through the Kansas Airport Improvement Program (KAIP).

“Improvements made to our aviation infrastructure are vital to local economies, even in rural parts of Kansas,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “These enhancements ensure that no matter where they are in the state, businesses and communities have every opportunity to grow and prosper.”

The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation received 135 applications seeking more than $84 million for projects in this round of KAIP grants. The selected projects focus on pavement preservation, safety, and air ambulance accessibility.

“These general aviation airport improvements couldn’t happen without local partners and KDOT working together,”&nbsp;said Kansas Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “Programs like this help Kansans have access to renewed and reliable transportation options available to them in every region of the state.”

Local matching funds are required, though the amount varies depending on the project. With the matching local funds, the total KAIP project value is more than $34 million.

Governor Kelly announces more than $14M to improve 37 Kansas airports

At Salina Public Schools (SPS), if a tornado warning begins during the school day, students and staff will take refuge in their building’s storm shelter. Once they relocate to the storm shelters, exterior doors of the school building may be locked and entry into the building is not guaranteed.

When a tornado warning has been announced, the district encourages parents to seek shelter and to wait until after the warning has been lifted before coming to the school. The district will use the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usd305.com/departments/public_information/mass_notification" target="_blank">School Messenger rapid notification system</a>&nbsp;to update parents by text, email and phone.

During tornado warnings, school buses will arrive at the nearest school where students will take cover in that building's storm shelter. Once emergency officials have issued an “all clear,” bus routes will resume and students will be returned safely home.

In an executive session Thursday morning, Salina City Commissioners identified the special legal counsel who will represent the city in the Cozy Inn v. City of Salina federal lawsuit.&nbsp;

In a unanimous decision, city commissioners agreed to authorize the city manager, Mike Schrage, to engage the law firm of <a href="https://www.fwlaw.com/">Fairfield and Woods P.C</a>. of Denver, Colorado as the legal defense counsel in the case of the Cozy Inn v. City of Salina.&nbsp;

&nbsp;In its 40th year, the 2024 Salina Spring Poetry Series features a lineup of accomplished poets who will read in downtown Salina. In-person readings will occur at 7 pm on Tuesdays in April at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).&nbsp;

The series is sponsored by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities and was curated by Traci Brimhall, Kansas Poet Laureate. Brimhall selected poets with a broad range of perspectives including those of a spoken word poet, a poet whose work is centered on the body, trauma, and the pharmaceutical industry, and the founder of the Salina Spring Poetry Series. Admission to each reading will be $5 cash at the door and free for students with ID.&nbsp;

“Salina Arts &amp; Humanities has been honored to present poetry to Salina over the last forty years,” said Brad Anderson, Executive Director of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. “Over the decades Salina has been enriched through the diversity of voices that explore our sense of place and reflect the human spirit.”&nbsp;

“It’s so incredible to be a part of celebrating 40 years of this series in Salina,” says Brimhall. “I'm so grateful for the celebration of different voices in Kansas poetry, and I'm so glad that this year's anniversary happens when there are five Tuesday's in the month, so we can hear even more great poems.”&nbsp;

Cash Hollistah is a national hip-hop recording artist, musician, spoken word poet, arts educator, and community activist based in Salina, Kansas. Hollistah's musical projects, "#cashmob." (2016) &amp; "#cashmob. 2" (2017), and live performances have earned him spots on high-profile stages, notably South by Southwest (SXSW), and billing with acts such as Common, Shaggy, Kirk Franklin, and T.I. Hollistah also founded/hosted the former poetry series, "ONE MIC", and occasionally teaches "Poetry &amp; Hip-Hop" specialty classes to students in central Kansas. Currently, Hollistah sits on the board of directors of the Kansas Music Hall of Fame. Cash Hollistah performs Tuesday, April 2, at 7 pm at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).&nbsp;

Hadara Bar-Nadav is an NEA fellow and award-winning author of several books of poetry, among them The Animal Is Chemical, The New Nudity, Lullaby (with Exit Sign), The Frame Called Ruin, and A Glass of Milk to Kiss Goodnight, as well as the chapbooks Fountain and Furnace and Show Me Yours. She is also co-author with Michelle Boisseau of the best-selling textbook Writing Poems, 8th ed. Her poems have appeared in The American Poetry Review, The Believer, Kenyon Review, The New Republic, Ploughshares, Poetry, Tin House, and elsewhere. Hadara is a Professor of English and teaches in the MFA program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Laura Lee Washburn is a University Professor, the Director of Creative Writing at Pittsburg State University in Kansas, the author of The Book of Stolen Images (Meadowlark) which was awarded the Nelson Book Award from the Kansas Authors Club, This Good Warm Place: 10th Anniversary Expanded Edition (March Street) and Watching the Contortionists (Palanquin Chapbook Prize), and the Editor-in-Chief of Poetry Cooperative/Heartland: Poetry of Love, Resistance, and Solidarity. Her book Arteries is forthcoming this May. Harbor Review’s Washburn Prize is named in her honor. Washburn reads Tuesday, April 16, at 7 pm at Ad Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).&nbsp;

Bradford Tice is the author of two books of poetry: Rare Earth (New Rivers Press, 2013), which was named the winner of the 2011 Many Voices Project and a 2014 Debut-litzer finalist, and What the Night Numbered (Trio House Press, 2015), winner of the 2014 Trio Award. His poetry and fiction have appeared in such periodicals as The Atlantic Monthly, North American Review, The American Scholar, Epoch, as well as in Best American Short Stories 2008. His poetry was also selected as the winner of Prairie Schooner’s 2009 Edward Stanley Award. He currently teaches at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. Tice reads Tuesday, April 23, at 7 pm at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).&nbsp;

In the decades since Patricia Traxler moved to Salina from San Diego, she has been active in the cultural life of the city. The founder and longtime director of Salina's Spring Poetry Series, she also taught at Kansas Wesleyan University for more than three decades. Traxler is the author of four volumes of poetry (most recently, Naming the Fires); a novel, Blood; and a short-story collection, In the Skin. She is currently at work on a book of essays, Don't Ask Me, and a volume of her collected poems, as yet untitled. 2024 Salina Spring Poetry Series announced for 40th anniversary

On March 7, 1965, a march by civil rights demonstrators was violently broken up at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, by state troopers and a sheriff’s posse in what came to be known as “Bloody Sunday.”

In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell received a U.S. patent for his telephone.

In 1911, President William Howard Taft ordered 20,000 troops to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border in response to the Mexican Revolution.

In 1916, Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) had its beginnings in Munich, Germany, as an airplane engine manufacturer.

Stutzmans Garden Center will set up its pop-up garden shop for one more year at the corner of W. Cloud and Ninth Street in Salina.

Jacki Harper, office manager for Stutzmans said they have the lease for one more year. Kansas Wesleyan University, which owns the lot, plans to use the lot for parking, according to Harper.

"Salina is one of if not our largest satellite location," Harper said. "We will definitely still be in Salina."

Harper said Stutzmans is considering several locations in central Salina for its future home.

“The university has some long-term discussions going on regarding the space,” said Brad Salois, director of marketing and communications at Kansas Wesleyan University. “But nothing will be taking place immediately.”

According to its website, Stutzmans opens just after the last frost of spring, which typically occurs at the end of April or the beginning of May. The garden center stays open until just before the first frost of fall.&nbsp; 

Stutzmans carries flowers and vegetables in the spring, heat-loving plants in the summer, and mums and more for fall. All plants are grown locally in the unpredictable Kansas weather.

Two vehicles crashed around noon on Wednesday, March 6, at the intersection of Wilson and Sherman Streets, turning one upside down on its top.

According to Salina Police Department Patrol Officer Bri Kuhlman, the wreck did not injure either driver seriously, with only on-site medical treatment needed.

The upside-down car in the crash needed the assistance of a towing company to move from the crash scene since it was upside down after the wreck.

Two-vehicle crash in Salina, no driver injured

Kansas Wesleyan’s DECA program continued its dominance of statewide competition at late February’s state meet at Hillsboro’s Tabor College. The Coyotes took home first place in 10 of their 12 events, easily outdoing such institutions as the University of Kansas, Wichita State, Fort Hays State and Southwestern College.&nbsp;

Total competitors statewide nearly doubled, going from 49 in 2023 to 89 this year, but the worst result any Coyote recorded was a second-place finish.&nbsp;

“I continue to be impressed by our students’ dedication to DECA; they're competitive in nature and driven to achieve the highest results,” said Dr. Trish Petak, head coach for KWU’s DECA team. “While their state results are impressive, they're also amazing leaders in the classroom, athletics, clubs and internships. I recognize their ability in the classroom and believe DECA will prepare them even more for their entrance into the workforce.”

Guthrie Burch, alongside partner Kyla Ohlson, took home three first-place finishes, as well as a second-place finish with partner Tru Haesemeyer.&nbsp;

“Our hard work these past six months truly paid off," said Burch. “DECA has built my confidence, fine-tuned my problem-solving skills and encouraged me to speak up when I know the answer.”

KWU DECA now prepares for its next meet, when programs from around the globe descend on Austin, Texas, from April 20-24 for the international competition.&nbsp;

 </figure>SubmittedKansas Wesleyan’s DECA program continued its dominance of statewide competition at late February’s state meet at Hillsboro’s Tabor College. The Coyotes took home first place in 10 of their 12 events, easily outdoing such institutions as the University of Kansas, Wichita State, Fort Hays State and Southwestern College.&nbsp;Total competitors statewide nearly doubled, going from 49 in 2023 to 89 this year, but the worst result any Coyote recorded was a second-place finish.&nbsp;“I continue to be impressed by our students’ dedication to DECA; they're competitive in nature and driven to achieve the highest results,” said Dr. Trish Petak, head coach for KWU’s DECA team. “While their state results are impressive, they're also amazing leaders in the classroom, athletics, clubs and internships. KWU DECA dominates at state meet

K-State veterinarians offer insight into why some calves have an aversion to silage

When working with animals, often their caretakers have to use clues to understand what might be leading that individual to react differently than expected. And with feed resources, the experts at the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute recommend slowly changing feeds, especially when introducing silage.

In answering a listener's question about why calves were not willing to eat silage, the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksre-learn.com/CattleChatFeedingSilagetoCalves">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast experts suggested following the cues of the cattle.

“When introducing silage, you are going to have to watch the calves closely to know when you can start increasing the amount in the diet. And with some groups, you may need to move more slowly,” said K-State veterinarian Bob Larson.

One reason that calves might have an aversion to eating silage is its smell, beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster said.

“Silage is a fermented feed resource, so it has a different taste and smell than calves are used to,” Lancaster said. “To make the silage more palatable, producers can add silage to the top of a feed source that the calves like. That way the calves have to work through the silage to get to what they prefer to eat.”

Because it is a fermented product, there can be variability in the batches, Lancaster said.

“If it is too wet, then it has a butyric fermentation that gives it a nasty odor that really turns cattle off on eating it,” Lancaster said. “If it is too dry, it can be moldy.”

Lancaster recommends that producers take a sample of the silage and have a fermentation analysis done to make sure there is the right balance of acetic acid, lactic acid and butyric acid. He also said silage inoculates added at the time the silage is made can provide bacteria at a high enough concentration to get an optimum fermentation.

If cattle are inconsistent in their willingness to eat the silage, K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers said it is important for producers to take and store samples as they work through the feed so when they go off feed they can pull the appropriate sample to test.

“There are microclimates within a silage pit, and so take the samples as you are feeding so that you have a representative sample to help you figure out what is actually causing them to stop eating the silage,” Lubbers said.

Submitted Kelsey Wood, special education teacher at Cottonwood Elementary School, and Michael Hall, math teacher at Central High School, were recognized as USD 305 Teachers of the Year. The Salina Board of Education honored them at their regular meeting on March 5, 2024.

Kelsey Wood has been teaching students at Cottonwood Elementary for six years. She taught kindergarten for over three years and then transitioned to the position of interventionist who provided reading and writing support. After earning her masters in special education, she began teaching special education to students in kindergarten through fifth grades.

While many commend her for her contributions as a special education teacher, it's Wood’s labor of love, advocacy and her innate ability to foster inclusion that sets her apart.&nbsp; “Students are most successful when they have positive relationships in loving environments where their mental health is a priority,” Wood said.

Wood’s classroom is where every student's developmental, behavioral and academic needs are met and embraced. She transforms the curriculum to ensure each child's pathway to learning is as uniquely compelling as their needs. Her steadfast approach to implementing behavioral plans is masterful.&nbsp;

Wood’s influence reaches beyond her classroom walls at Cottonwood. Her voice on the Cottonwood Belonging Committee helps ensure everyone within the school's ecosystem—students, families, and staff—is seen, heard, and valued. He believes that teaching isn't just a job; it's a responsibility—a duty to fill every second of class with value. His students relate to his effort and productivity and are inspired to match his commitment with their own hard work.&nbsp;

For Hall, teaching is more than delivering knowledge, it's about building character.&nbsp;

"Through helping students with difficult concepts, they can understand that it's okay to struggle and it's important to be able to work at things,”Hall said.
