At 6:53 a.m. Thursday morning, the Saline County Sheriff's Department found 22-year-old Rylan Whitmer hiding in a trash can in the 100 block of North Eighth Street in Salina.

Wednesday afternoon, a 24-year-old woman drove to the Salina Regional Health Center emergency room after she received multiple injuries from her boyfriend, Whitmer.

"She drove up to the front of the ER — he [Whitmer] bailed out of the car and took off running, and we couldn't find him," said Saline County Sheriff Rodger Soldan. 

Salina Regional treated the woman for her injuries while deputies pursued Whitmer.

Soldan told Salina Post that the Saline County Sheriff's Department arrested Whitmer on the following requested charges:

Reportedly, F. Scott Fitzgerald once told fellow writer Ernest Hemingway that “the rich are different from you and me,” which may suggest that the super-wealthy are mysterious, inscrutable, and indifferent to the plight of ordinary human beings.

Writer-director Sébastien Marnier has wicked fun with this notion, playing with audience paranoia about the upper classes while subverting expectations about his characters’ true motives. Our working-class surrogate into this privileged world is Stéphane (Laure Calamy), a young woman desperately needing a place to live. She reaches out to the father she doesn’t even know—rich but enfeebled tycoon Serge Dumontet (Jacques Weber), who invites her to a palatial villa that’s a tacky tribute to consumer consumption. 

Serge seems to believe Stéphane simply wants to re-connect with him after the death of her mother, but Serge’s wife Louise (Dominique Blanc), other daughter George (Doria Tillier), and seemingly loyal servant Agnès (Véronique Ruggia Saura) are less enthused, smelling an interloper trying to usurp the family fortune. And they may be right, but Marnier’s puzzle-box screenplay and Calamy’s likeable, charismatic performance keep us uncertain. 

Is Stéphane actually being played by her hosts, or does she have secret vengeance on her mind? Perhaps the key lies in the absence of Serge’s beloved son—or Stéphane’s relationship with a female convict currently in prison. The film keeps us guessing, while reveling in guerrilla warfare between the haves and have-nots. 

Filled with Hitchcockian suspense, arch performances, and deadpan humor (starting with the film’s knowingly portentous title), The Origin of Evil&nbsp;likely shares Hemingway’s sarcastic, unimpressed response to Fitzgerald’s claim that the rich are different: “Yes. They have more money.”

Congratulations Ivanna Morton, Fourth Grade teacher at Heusner Elementary School, and Randy Maag, facility manager at Meadowlark Elementary School, who received the 'You Make a Difference Award.'

USD 305 names 'You Make a Difference Award' recipients

Late last night at approximately 12:30 a.m., a staff member of The Shady Lady Gentlemen's Club, located at 1540 W. Old Highway 40, heard two gunshots near the front door.

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, a witness said he saw two Latino men arguing at the establishment's entrance until the shorter man pulled out a pistol and shot two rounds.&nbsp;

The pair then got into a "late-model" white Chevrolet Cruz and drove west on Old Highway 40, firing two more shots while in the car.

"There are no victims, and other than finding two shell casings. So we know that something was happening, but there are no reports of any injuries or anything yet," Soldan said.

The Saline County Sheriff's Department has not named any suspects at this time.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890. To commemorate his birth, we compiled a list of "Ike Sites" in Abilene to help visitors get a feel for the Cowtown that raised a President.

1.Kansas I-70 - Eisenhower's Interstate System

2.Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum-200 N. E. 4th Street

On the grounds is the Presidential Museum, Library, Boyhood Home, Visitors Information Center and the Place of meditation, where Ike, Mamie and their young son, Doud are buried.

See the 11' statue of 5 Star General and 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower. The bronze statue of Dwight D. Eisenhower by Robert L. Dean, Jr. was presented to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum by the Harry and Edith Darby Foundation. 

The statue depicts Eisenhower in the familiar World War II "Eisenhower Jacket." The Georgia granite base has quotations from Eisenhower's illustrious careers as President of the United States, Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces, General of the Army, Supreme Allied Commander of Europe, and Chief of Staff of the Army.

When the Eisenhower family first returned to Abilene from Dennison, Texas, in 1892, they lived in a cottage at 112 SE 2nd Street. Prior to Ike’s 8th birthday, in 1898, they purchased this 818 square foot house, a barn and surrounding land from Ike’s Uncle Abraham Lincoln Eisenhower.

 Ike’s parents raised six boys to manhood in this home and lived there until their own deaths. The home was first dedicated to the Eisenhower Center on June 22, 1947. A second dedication took place following repairs on November 24, 1956.'

Where the existing Visitor Center Stands All the Eisenhower boys attended Lincoln Elementary School (Grades 1-6). They then went on to Garfield for 7th &amp; 8th grades.

Lincoln Elementary School was purchased by the U.S. Government and razed in 1974. Construction of the Visitor Center was completed in time for its opening on July 1, 1975.

From 1892-1898, the Eisenhower family lived in this home. Today, it’s owned by a long-time friend of Ike and Mamie, Claus Gruendl. The Gruendl family also operates the Eisenhower Museum in Oberammergau (Southern Germany).&nbsp;

Ike’s father, David, decided to move his family back to Abilene from Denison, Texas, in 1892 to take a job as a plant engineer at the Creamery.&nbsp; His sons were frequently seen hand-carrying his lunch to him from the house on 4th street, as he put in 12-16 hour work days.

Following his high school graduation in 1909, Ike worked at the creamery as an iceman, a fireman and finally, a second engineer.&nbsp; Before going to West Point, Ike made “an impressive $90 per month”, with the work week being “eighty-four hours a week, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., fifty-two weeks a year.”

"Ike Wins" by artist William Counter, completed on November 5, 2022 - 70 years to the date that his win made Abilene Reflector front page news - a historic moment in Abilene. Nine out of 10 voters in Abilene voted for Ike in the 1952 Presidential election.

9.Central School Site-300 N.W. 7th Street

The buildings where Dwight Eisenhower and his brothers attended grades 7-12 have since been razed.  The Garfield (Senior Living) now stands on the Junior High School building site. 

 Directly to the east is the site of the Abilene High School building Ike graduated from in 1909.  His class photo was taken on the steps, which can still be seen on the playground.

Named an “8 Wonders of Kansas – Architecture”, the Seelye Mansion is like a time capsule. Most of the home’s furnishings were purchased at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The furnishings cost more than $55,000 to build the 11,000-square-foot home. The home features the original Edison light fixtures and Tiffany-style mantel. 

Frank Lloyd Wright suggested remodeling the interior in the 1920s. The home was featured on the History Channel’s Mysteries at the Mansion. Visitors even get to bowl on the 1905 Box Ball Alley, which was purchased at the Chicago World’s Fair. Ike Fact: Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered ice to the Seelye Mansion as a young boy. The Seelye sisters recounted stories of Ike as a man from the “other side of the tracks.”

11.Engle House Bed and Breakfast-102 Highland Drive

The Engle House Bed and Breakfast was the home of Jacob Engle and is on the National Register of Historic Places with connections to Abilene’s history.    David Eisenhower came to Abilene, KS, after refrigeration school in Texas and started working for Jacob Engle at the Belle Springs Creamery, where Jacob was vice president. 

 Dwight D Eisenhower also worked for Jacob Engle during the summers until his appointment with West Point on June 14, 1911.  Jacob Engle, President of the School Board, signed Dwight D Eisenhower’s high school diploma.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ike's provides a very casual, family-oriented atmosphere while still capturing that sports feel. The menu is filled with something for everyone, from an assortment of flavored wings to juicy burgers, pasta to steaks, as well as amazing salads. 12.Abilene Cemetery-N.W. 14th Street, across from Abilene Middle School

Burial place of David Jacob Eisenhower (D: March 10, 1942) and Ida Elizabeth Stover Eisenhower (D: September 11, 1946).  Ike was noted to have visited his parents' graves during every return trip to Abilene.  Pay respects to Ike’s parents.&nbsp;

13.Eisenhower Park and Stadium-500 Pine St.

Under Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal and Works Progress Administration (WPA), Abilene’s public park, swimming pool, stadium, and rose garden were completed in 1939. In June 1944, this 40-acre park was dedicated to Dwight D. Eisenhower and has since been known as Eisenhower Park.

It was at the park stadium on June 6, 1952, that General Dwight D. Eisenhower announced his candidacy for President. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Abilene City Park Historic District is home to the Eisenhower Park &amp; Rose Garden, stadium, municipal pool and playground, and the Central.

The significance of this site is associated with the Abilene Municipal Band.&nbsp; The Band has existed since 1881 and played at both welcome parades for Ike and his presidential candidacy announcement.&nbsp; The original Band Shell burned down in 1989, and this one was built in 1990.

15.Abilene's Victorian Inn Bed and Breakfast-820 NW 3rd

This lovely Victorian home was built in 1887 by Dr. Edward E. Hazlett. Hazlett’s son, Edward “Swede”, was a close childhood friend of Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was Swede who persuaded Ike to apply for an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. 

Both Hazlett and Eisenhower passed the entrance examination, but Eisenhower was barred from the entrance because he exceeded the maximum allowable entrance age. With that, Hazlett attended the Naval Academy, and Eisenhower accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The two remained lifelong friends.

The Eisenhower boys and their friends made frequent fishing and swimming expeditions to this creek, whose banks were frequently swollen from heavy rains. With Ike’s assistance, a flood control project was completed in 1952.

17.Sam Heller's House-214 N. Walnut Street

Eisenhower frequently entertained in this house and other fine Abilene homes. It is believed that the decision to run for President of the United States was made in this home.

President Eisenhower and his family frequently stayed in suites at the Sunflower during trips to Abilene.&nbsp; They were photographed here, viewing the Welcome Parade for Ike from the Hotel balcony in 1952.

Historic downtown Abilene is full of small tidbits of Ike's history. Many downtown storefronts still host displays and signage&nbsp;celebrating&nbsp;the community's favorite President.&nbsp;

21.Union Pacific Railroad Depot-201 N. W. 2nd Street

President Eisenhower frequently traveled to and from Abilene by train as a citizen, General and President of the United States. Dwight D. Eisenhower departed Abilene from this site in 1911 for West Point and his future military career. 

At that time, there was an older 3-story depot/hotel building located on the site. The official end of the Chisholm Trail, the original site of Texas Street and the Historic Post Office Block can be seen from the East portico entrance. Following his death, his body was returned for burial at the Place of Meditation via the Union Pacific Railroad, arriving in Abilene at this Depot. California architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed Abilene's Union Pacific Railroad Depot and the matching freight depot to the West in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. 

The building was constructed in 1928, and passenger service began in 1929. When the UP Railroad announced intentions to close the depot building in 1986, a community-wide campaign was launched to preserve the depot. Renovation costs were shared equally between city funds &amp; community fund-raising efforts. The Abilene Civic Center was officially dedicated in 1988 as a public-use facility. 

It has since housed hundreds of meetings, seminars, family gatherings, and more! The Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau operates a visitors center in the east end of the building, and its business office occupies the west end. The middle "Civic Center" portion is used for special events.

22.Ike's Galaxy Painted Cowboy Boot-419 N Broadway St

This cowboy boot along Abilene's&nbsp;<a href="https://abilenekansas.org/blog/2022/08/09/celebrating-cowboy-roots-with-cowboy-boots">Cowboy Art Trai</a>l celebrates the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Act (NASA), which Ike signed on July 29, 1958.&nbsp;

It is placed in front of City Hall, named after Eisenhower.&nbsp;

 </figure>From 1892-1898, the Eisenhower family lived in this home. Today, it’s owned by a long-time friend of Ike and Mamie, Claus Gruendl. The Gruendl family also operates the Eisenhower Museum in Oberammergau (Southern Germany).&nbsp;Ike’s father, David, decided to move his family back to Abilene from Denison, Texas, in 1892 to take a job as a plant engineer at the Creamery.&nbsp; His sons were frequently seen hand-carrying his lunch to him from the house on 4th street, as he put in 12-16 hour work days.Following his high school graduation in 1909, Ike worked at the creamery as an iceman, a fireman and finally, a second engineer.&nbsp; Before going to West Point, Ike made “an impressive $90 per month”, with the work week being “eighty-four hours a week, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., fifty-two weeks a year.”<h2>8.Ike Wins Mural-401 N. It was Swede who persuaded Ike to apply for an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Both Hazlett and Eisenhower passed the entrance examination, but Eisenhower was barred from the entrance because he exceeded the maximum allowable entrance age. With that, Hazlett attended the Naval Academy, and Eisenhower accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.  </figure>President Eisenhower frequently traveled to and from Abilene by train as a citizen, General and President of the United States. Dwight D. Eisenhower departed Abilene from this site in 1911 for West Point and his future military career. At that time, there was an older 3-story depot/hotel building located on the site. The official end of the Chisholm Trail, the original site of Texas Street and the Historic Post Office Block can be seen from the East portico entrance. Following his death, his body was returned for burial at the Place of Meditation via the Union Pacific Railroad, arriving in Abilene at this Depot. California architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed Abilene's Union Pacific Railroad Depot and the matching freight depot to the West in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. The building was constructed in 1928, and passenger service began in 1929. When the UP Railroad announced intentions to close the depot building in 1986, a community-wide campaign was launched to preserve the depot. Renovation costs were shared equally between city funds &amp; community fund-raising efforts. The Abilene Civic Center was officially dedicated in 1988 as a public-use facility. It has since housed hundreds of meetings, seminars, family gatherings, and more! The Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau operates a visitors center in the east end of the building, and its business office occupies the west end. During the month of Oct. the Salina Post will be publishing a series of profiles introducing the community to the six Salina City Commission candidates and school board member candidates for USD 306, USD 305, and USD 307.&nbsp;

The Salina Post sent questionnaires to the candidates asking for biographical information, initiatives they hope to champion as a board member, and why they chose to run for school board.

What is your profession? I am a lawyer and mediator, also a singer-songwriter and a horse boarding stable owner.

Give a brief bio on yourself in 100 words or less: I grew up in Salina, went to Heusner and South, then to K-State for a degree in Elementary Education. Later, I went to Harvard for a law degree, then came back to Kansas. For the past 23 years, I’ve been back in Salina. As a mediator, I get people together on different sides of an issue and help them reach agreement. As a singer-songwriter I sing about 100 gigs a year, including many in Salina schools through Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. I’ve been on the Salina school board for two terms. My husband and I run a horse boarding stable.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize in order to improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of public school students in our community? In line with our strategic plan, I want to ensure that our students are excellent communicators and critical thinkers and have good social-emotional skills. If they have these skills, they will be on their way to a successful adulthood. To get there, they need great teachers (which we have), good facilities (which we have), and an all-around enriching school experience (which we are always working to improve). I want us to be sure that even kids who don’t have every advantage at home come away with these critical skills. This means they go to school every possible day, overcoming our significant challenge of chronic absenteeism. We are currently working on all these things.

In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue? We have a long-standing policy to respond to book challenges. We went through this policy in the past couple of years when three community members, none of whom had children in our schools and none of whom had read the book, objected to a book that is in our high school libraries,&nbsp;All Boys Aren’t Blue. As directed by the policy, there were three levels of appeal. At each of the first two levels, different teachers, administrators, and community members read the book and decided it had value and should stay. At the last level of appeal, the whole school board read the book and decided it had value and should stay. I am glad so many people got to read the book. I am sorry the objectors never read it. Children are not harmed by reading books – they are enriched.

Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents, citizens, and educators? Our schools are trying and trying to get more parents involved in their children’s education. Each year, there are at 4 days just for parents to come to the school to meet with the teachers. All year, the parents have access to Skyward, the online record of their children’s educational progress. On any day, a parent can call or email their child’s teacher(s) through the school websites, and teachers work hard to answer. Parents may visit their children in school. In our recent work to lower chronic absenteeism, school staff have been calling homes when the children are absent to see if help is needed to get them to school. Each school has a site council - including parents, teachers and community members - which meets regularly to find ways to improve the school and keep communication open between school and home. If parents are interested in involvement, there are many, many ways for them to do that. Just in the past year, we have made major efforts to ensure that school is a welcoming place for families as well as for students and staff.

Please explain why you are running for school board. I have enjoyed the challenging work I’ve encountered on the school board. I am interested in serving another term. I am also concerned about the number of people in our community and elsewhere who have become convinced that public schools are the enemy. The anti-public-school narrative comes from an outside source that is hostile to the idea of communities working together across all our differing backgrounds and opinions. I want Salina to be a great place to live, not just pass through on the way to somewhere else. I want it to be a great place to grow up, a great place to move to, a great place to come back to. For that, we need great public schools.

2023 Election: Candidate for USD 305 School Board, Ann Zimmerman

As the air grows chillier, the chance for severe weather remains — north-central Kansas will likely see heavy rain, wind gusts of about 60 mph, and possibly a tornado on Thursday afternoon and evening.

The <a href="https://www.weather.gov/ict/">Wichita National Weather Service</a> also reported a chance of hail on Thursday and warned residents of the Kansas-Nebraska state line to be weary.

NWS meteorologist Eric Metzger said residents in the state's north-central region should prepare their storm-safe rooms and check their storm-warning systems for the end of this week.

"Some people, myself included, when winter comes along, my safe place is often occupied with storage," Metzger said. "(Residents) need to make sure that they have multiple ways to receive warnings. Whether it be the weather radio, your phone, television, or whatever, just keep an eye out."

Metzger said the current predictions indicate this storm will produce low-level shear, which occurs when wind speed and direction change rapidly low to the ground — often an ingredient for tornadoes.

If predictions of this storm continue in the weather outlook, Metzger said the event will likely look like a familiar Kansas summer storm, beginning as isolated pockets and turning to a squall line over the rest of the state.

Those isolated pockets of storms are where most tornadic activity happens in a storm, with the squall line often causing straight-line wind damage instead.

"The little discreet cells that are by themselves, those are the ones that tend to produce the big tornadoes — Andover was an example of that, Hesston was an example of that, and Greensburg too," Metzger said. "But the environment, even if we get those discrete elements, I don't see the environment necessary to produce a tornado of that strength."

If necessary, the Storm Prediction Center will produce a thunderstorm watch over the next few days, warning residents to be alert. The Wichita NWS has thunderstorm warnings in discreet locations during the storm, which would indicate taking shelter from weather conditions.

Metzger stressed the need to prepare for severe weather, especially after prediction centers issue watches or warnings.

"The way it should be viewed is that once the watch comes out, it's game on — it's time to pay attention," Metzger said. "When we punched the warning, it's here, and if you have an action plan, you execute it.

Wichita meteorologist predicts severe weather for north-central Kansas tonight

The scientists from NASA are studying the landscape closely. But they aren’t viewing a satellite image of the moon. This is a group of NASA earth scientists who are visiting a Kansas farm in person so as to better understand the challenges facing farmers in water resources.

The farm they are visiting is a leader in conservation practices.

Ray Flickner is the Kansas agriculturalist who met with the NASA scientists on his farm. He is the fifth generation to farm his family’s land. The Flickners’ base operation is an irrigated row crop operation that has been in his family since 1874.

Flickner grew up in Moundridge and studied agricultural education at Kansas State University before earning his master’s degree. He met and married Susan who also earned bachelors and masters degrees in education from K-State.

Susan became a family life and resource management teacher and served as executive director of the Kansas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Ray Flickner taught college agriculture classes before pursuing a career in agricultural lending. He described education and finance as the first two phases of his life.

“In 2007, a couple of years after my father passed away, I made the decision to enter the third phase of my life and began tending the land full-time,” Flickner said. The current operation produces irrigated corn, soybeans, sorghum and wheat. Through it all, an important theme has been the importance of conservation.

“Conservation and sustainability has been, still is, and always will be the key ingredient to keep farms and ranches thriving,” Flickner said.

This includes economic sustainability, he said.

“As the late, great Barry Flinchbaugh was famous for saying: Without profitability, a farm will not be sustainable,” Flickner said.

Conservation and water quality have long been priorities for the Flickner family. Ray’s grandfather planted shelterbelts and windbreaks in the 1930s. His father transitioned crop ground to minimum tillage in the 1980s. Ray installed the first sub-surface drip irrigation system on the farm in 2001 and has expanded that system significantly since.

The Flickners have constructed miles of terraces, built acres of grassed waterways, enhanced efficiency of their irrigation systems (enabling their water use to be 40% less than the county irrigation average), and transitioned to a fully no-till or minimum tillage operation with cover crops playing an integral role in soil health and soil biology improvements.

They have grid soil sampled nearly 1,000 acres on a four-year rotation, enabling them to variably apply nutrients and improve organic matter in the soil.

In 2019, the Flickner Innovation Farm was created as a site where various water conservation initiatives, soil health practices, and weed management tools are tested on a production-scale farming operation. This is now a collaboration of more than a dozen university, industry, and agency partners. It’s located west of the rural community of Moundridge, population 1,974 people. Now, that’s rural.

“K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Center for Agricultural Resources and the Environment have been instrumental in truth-testing many of the trials and experiments,” Flickner said. The farm hosts summer field days and winter meetings where peer-reviewed research is shared with other producers and partners.

“Hearing from producers who have taken something they learned from one of our events back home to implement is music to my ears,” Flickner said.

The Flickners received a Success Story award at the Kansas Governor’s Water Conference, the Kansas Farm Bureau statewide Natural Resources award, the Kansas Banker’s Association Water Conservation Award, and even testified before Congress. In 2022, earth scientists from NASA visited the Flickner Innovation Farm to learn about the challenges farmers face related to water resources.

“Susan and I have been blessed with a multi-generational legacy,” Flickner said. “We have committed ourselves and taught our children, who are in turn teaching our grandchildren, that we must leave the land in a better condition than how we found it.”

It’s time to leave these NASA scientists at the Flickner Farm. We commend Ray and Susan Flickner and family for making a difference with innovation and conservation.

But they aren’t viewing a satellite image of the moon. This is a group of NASA earth scientists who are visiting a Kansas farm in person so as to better understand the challenges facing farmers in water resources.The farm they are visiting is a leader in conservation practices.Ray Flickner is the Kansas agriculturalist who met with the NASA scientists on his farm. He is the fifth generation to farm his family’s land. The Flickners’ base operation is an irrigated row crop operation that has been in his family since 1874.Flickner grew up in Moundridge and studied agricultural education at Kansas State University before earning his master’s degree. He met and married Susan who also earned bachelors and masters degrees in education from K-State.Susan became a family life and resource management teacher and served as executive director of the Kansas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.Ray Flickner taught college agriculture classes before pursuing a career in agricultural lending. He described education and finance as the first two phases of his life.“In 2007, a couple of years after my father passed away, I made the decision to enter the third phase of my life and began tending the land full-time,” Flickner said. The current operation produces irrigated corn, soybeans, sorghum and wheat. Through it all, an important theme has been the importance of conservation.“Conservation and sustainability has been, still is, and always will be the key ingredient to keep farms and ranches thriving,” Flickner said.This includes economic sustainability, he said.“As the late, great Barry Flinchbaugh was famous for saying: Without profitability, a farm will not be sustainable,” Flickner said.Conservation and water quality have long been priorities for the Flickner family. Ray’s grandfather planted shelterbelts and windbreaks in the 1930s. His father transitioned crop ground to minimum tillage in the 1980s. Ray installed the first sub-surface drip irrigation system on the farm in 2001 and has expanded that system significantly since.The Flickners have constructed miles of terraces, built acres of grassed waterways, enhanced efficiency of their irrigation systems (enabling their water use to be 40% less than the county irrigation average), and transitioned to a fully no-till or minimum tillage operation with cover crops playing an integral role in soil health and soil biology improvements.They have grid soil sampled nearly 1,000 acres on a four-year rotation, enabling them to variably apply nutrients and improve organic matter in the soil.In 2019, the Flickner Innovation Farm was created as a site where various water conservation initiatives, soil health practices, and weed management tools are tested on a production-scale farming operation. This is now a collaboration of more than a dozen university, industry, and agency partners. It’s located west of the rural community of Moundridge, population 1,974 people. Now, that’s rural.“K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Center for Agricultural Resources and the Environment have been instrumental in truth-testing many of the trials and experiments,” Flickner said. The farm hosts summer field days and winter meetings where peer-reviewed research is shared with other producers and partners.“Hearing from producers who have taken something they learned from one of our events back home to implement is music to my ears,” Flickner said.The Flickners received a Success Story award at the Kansas Governor’s Water Conference, the Kansas Farm Bureau statewide Natural Resources award, the Kansas Banker’s Association Water Conservation Award, and even testified before Congress. Crowded tables chattering while dishes clink in bus tubs make up the regular background noise for<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093007218087"> T-Lo's</a> owners, Evan Velasquez and Jordan Long.

Before T-Lo's, the owners worked at other restaurants and establishments throughout Salina, often together like Velasquez at the Salina Country Club or Long at Martinelli's Little Italy next door.

Occasionally, the pair worked together as managers, like at the Rolling Hills Zoo. With years combined, the team has over three decades in the restaurant industry, and last year, they decided to open a food joint together.

"We've had the idea for T-Lo's or opening restaurants as soon as 2016, but we're just kind of young and dumb back then," Long said. "We never did it, and we put it on the back burner and went and got other jobs, and then this place opened up, and we executed it."

T-Lo's opened on Santa Fe Avenue next door to Martinelli's Little Italy in July this year, serving its customers sandwiches, wings, and homemade potato chips.

The love of the restaurant business and making food drove Long and Velasquez to open T-Lo's, but its initial business location could have been McPherson instead of Salina.

While looking at a building in 2016 in McPherson for T-Lo's initially, Long said he and Velasquez at the time could not move forward with the establishment.

"It takes a lot more money to open up," Long said. "(There are) weird hurdles like getting your tax registration, your food license, your sales tax registration."

According to the pair of owners, their current challenge is waiting on a liquor license to provide beer to its customers on weekend nights, which recently expanded its hours to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

Velasquez and Long said their extensive careers in the food industry helped them start the downtown establishment at 156 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

"We had to price out menus, we had to execute catering events, and it was just two of us working in basically the same kind of kitchen we're working on right now," Long said. 

Another aspect Velasquez said he enjoyed was the freedom from being an owner, allowing him to make decisions he felt best for the business.

"Oh, it's nice to cook food we want," Velasquez said. "There's been times where I've been working in other places and had ideas like, 'Hey, I think if we do this, it could work this way,' and it isn't awesome to get told no to stuff like that."

Reflecting on their careers, the pair said working in various positions within the restaurant business armed them with knowledge other business owners may be unaware of.

From server to management to owner, Long said managing customers and staff are critical components of the food industry, which he and Velasquez have extensive experience with.

The owners stressed the need for preparation to make a restaurant successful, from cooking to menu design — Long said preparation and flexibility were vital for T-Lo's.

"Know your concept and know what you need," Long said. "Be ready to adapt after day one because we took some off the menu on the first day."

T-Lo's is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.

Long and Velasquez said T-Lo's is on delivery services like GrubHub, UberEats and DoorDash.

Two local food industry workers turned owners — T-Lo's on Santa Fe

Nobody was injured following a single-vehicle accident just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Salina.

Eyewitnesses report that a blue 2007 Hyundai Elantra was traveling south on the alleyway connecting Parkwood Drive and East Cloud Street when a pickup started backing out of a nearby parking spot.&nbsp;

Noticing the pickup, the driver of the Elantra, identified as "Barbara," over-corrected her vehicle and veered off the alleyway. She went through a wooden fence and toppled a tree.&nbsp;

"We were called for a vehicle that went through a fence and hit a tree," said Chris Stansberry, Salina Fire Battalion Chief. "By the time we got there, the occupant was already out of the vehicle. EMS checked on her, but then she refused to go to the hospital."

The witness and nearby resident, Deb Cunningham, told Salina Post she had just gone inside for a drink of water when the accident occurred.&nbsp;

"It couldn't have been less than two minutes after I went inside when I heard a loud bang," Cunningham said. "She landed right in the area where I had been weeding."

She went through a wooden fence and toppled a tree.&nbsp;"We were called for a vehicle that went through a fence and hit a tree," said Chris Stansberry, Salina Fire Battalion Chief. "By the time we got there, the occupant was already out of the vehicle. EMS checked on her, but then she refused to go to the hospital."The witness and nearby resident, Deb Cunningham, told Salina Post she had just gone inside for a drink of water when the accident occurred.&nbsp;"It couldn't have been less than two minutes after I went inside when I heard a loud bang," Cunningham said. Nobody injured following Wednesday residential vehicle accident

Smoky Hills PBS announced that they will be bringing Clifford The Big Red Dog to the Little River Fall Festival in the MTC Parking Lot on Saturday, Oct. 21.&nbsp; Clifford will be greeting children in Little River from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there is no admission fee to attend this event.&nbsp; This event is FREE!

Kids will have a chance to meet Clifford in person and take pictures with him. The first 200 kids that come to meet Clifford will receive a FREE gift!&nbsp; There will also be fun crafts on hand for the kids.

“Family Fun Day is a great FREE event for the entire family,” said Haley Gagnon, Smoky Hills PBS’ Special Events Coordinator.&nbsp; “We are excited to be part of the Little River Fall Festival this year!”

Family Fun Day is an educational and entertaining event that Smoky Hills PBS puts on approximately 4 times a year across Central and Western Kansas.&nbsp; Smoky Hills PBS brings a special PBS character to visit and FREE books and educational gifts are distributed to those children in attendance.

﻿Burma Road between Coronado Heights and Rose Hill Road is scheduled to be closed from October 17 to December 31, 2023, for a bridge replacement project.&nbsp;The project is located on Burma Road, 100 feet north of the intersection of Coronado Heights and Winchester Road.

Burma Road south of Rose Hill Road will be closed to all through traffic. Burma Road at Coronado Heights Road will be completely closed to all traffic. However, the intersection and Coronado Heights Road will be open and accessible during construction.
