The work will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. 

Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost-effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

This $491,000 project is part of the City's $5.3 million 2023 street maintenance program.

Issues pertaining to zoning, solid waste on Salina City Commission Agenda

The Salina Public Library made a decision in June that sparked public outrage four months later when the community saw <a href="https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/162116129_birger-sandzen-1871-1954-oil-on-canvas-dated-1921">two Birger Sandzen paintings up for auction</a>.

Earlier this year, SPL began considering options for its two Sandzen paintings after discovering the impact of the artworks' insurance costs and their deteriorating status.

"The library is not equipped to maintain fine art," SPL said in a press release. "Realizing that the paintings would continue to deteriorate in our care, we considered the options and consulted with the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery regarding our questions."

The Salina Post contacted SPL for comment in addition to the release, and there was no response.

The library held an open meeting at 7 a.m. on June 20 to discuss the potential sales, and its minutes reported no one from the public attended that meeting.

Susan Hawksworth, director of the Smoky Hill Museum, said the library did not consult the museum about the paintings earlier this year.

"The first I heard about it was Monday," Hawksworth said. 

Hawksworth reported that when SPL and the Smoky Hill Museum split decades ago, there were questions about who the two Birger paintings belonged to. Ultimately, they belonged to the library's collections.

Ron Michael, the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery director in Lindsborg, said SPL approached the gallery about the paintings in mid-March, looking for options.

The Memorial Gallery described a few possibilities for the library to consider, including donating the works to the gallery or exploring various options for sale.

Michael said SPL likely acquired the paintings in the early 1900s when Sandzen worked as a professor at Bethany College in Lindsborg and continued to paint his surroundings.

"Sandzen was really interested in getting his artwork out into the community," Michael said. "He tried to get them placed in schools and other public institutions."

After Sandzen attended an art exhibition in 1911 in McPherson, his art spread further in the area, making its way to Salina.

<a href="https://www.soulisauctions.com/">Dirk Soulis Auctions</a> intends to finalize the pieces' auctions on the <a href="https://www.liveauctioneers.com/">Live Auctioneer</a>'s website on Saturday, and according to the library's release, there is no way to legally pull out of the contract without facing financial ramifications.

The Salina, Kansas Vintage Photos, Descriptions, and Shared Memories Facebook group began a community-led petition to support keeping the paintings at SPL. Ruth Ascher reached out to the group community yesterday, encouraging action from the other members.

SPL works to provide the best possible service to the public. 

As an entity that strives to serve our community, we are called to prioritize the best use of taxpayer funding for our services, resources, staff, and facilities.

It is our responsibility to spend our limited funds in a way that benefits the greatest needs, as expressed by the community we serve as a whole.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The library is not equipped to maintain fine art. SPL already needed to restore one of the paintings in our possession. Realizing that the paintings would continue to deteriorate in our care, we considered the options and consulted with the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery regarding our questions.&nbsp;

Our board discussed this issue over two board meetings (agendas linked below) and received no feedback from the public. The board voted unanimously to sell the paintings through a fine arts auction house that was recommended by the Sandzén Gallery. 

Despite what many have stated, this decision was made months ago and with full information on the decision being made available to the public.&nbsp;

 SPL: Birger Sandzen paintings up for auction

Bring your questions and enthusiasm to a "Speed Dating with the Candidates" event planned by the Salina League of Women Voters with candidates for the Salina City Commission and USD 305 School Board.

Salina LWV League President Lori Trow said the event begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, in the multipurpose building of Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit.

The program will follow the speed dating format, which offers candidates and voters the opportunity to quickly meet, ask questions and exchange ideas. Candidates will answer questions with those sitting at a table for 10 minutes, then move to the next table, and the next, until they meet with people at all tables in the room. 

Candidates will also make opening and closing statements and may meet individually with citizens afterward.

Businesses and individuals from across the state were honored Thursday night at the B-29 Doc Hangar, Education and Visitors Center in Wichita for their outstanding contributions to Kansas communities and the state’s economy at the Kansas Department of Commerce’s 2023 To the Stars: Kansas Business Awards ceremony.

Governor Laura Kelly announced at the ceremony that Atwood-based SurePoint Ag Systems has won the 2023 Governor’s Award of Excellence and Tank Connection in Parsons earned the Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award.

“SurePoint Ag Systems and Tank Connection are both advanced manufacturing businesses having great success on the global stage,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “These companies, and all of the To the Stars nominees and award-winners, represent the best of Kansas business. Their success shows that the stars are truly the limit for businesses in our great state.”

A record 297 businesses, organizations and individuals were nominated in nine categories for this year’s To the Stars: Kansas Business Awards. Nominees were reviewed and scored for various criteria such as business expansion, employee recruitment and retention practices, training and educational programs, capital investments, and support of local community events. A total of 245 Merit Awards and 43 Regional Awards were presented at the event. Additionally, one nominee in each category was designated a Statewide Winner, making them finalists for the Governor’s Award of Excellence.

“The Kansas economy is booming because of these innovative entrepreneurs,” Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “When we talk about Kansas being the best state in the nation to live, work and raise a family, we know it is possible because of great companies driving success in their communities. It is an honor to celebrate their achievements.”

The 2023 Governor’s Award of Excellence winner, SurePoint Ag Systems, was founded in 2007 in Atwood. Saturday's game will be the sixth between the two schools. KWU has a 3-2 lead in the series but Avila has won two of the last three including an 18-14 victory last season at JRI Stadium. The Eagles won 30-20 in Kansas City in 2021 and KWU 46-38 in 2020 at Graves Family Sports Complex.

The Coyotes won three games in a row before taking last Saturday off that was part of the KCAC-wide bye week. They defeated McPherson 10-7 September 30 in McPherson before the break. The defense was superb once again limiting the Bulldogs to 297 yards and 35 points below their season average.

After going 4-2 against teams in the Dr. Ted Kessinger Division the Coyotes' the last five games will be against their opponents in the Gene Bissell Division. The division winners receive berths in the NAIA playoffs.

KWU's opponents are averaging 15.5 points and 288.7 yards per game – 135 rushing and 153.7 passing. The Coyotes are averaging 18.3 points and 253 yards – 127.8 rushing and 125.2 passing.

Freshman quarterback Byron McNair made his college debut in the third quarter against McPherson and led the Coyotes on a game-winning 75-yard, nine-play drive in the fourth quarter. He was 7 of 11 passing for 115 yards and had 15 yards rushing on seven carries. Richard Lara started the game and was 7 of 16 for 54 yards.

Coach Matt Myers said a decision on Saturday's starting quarterback would be made later in the week.

The Eagles have lost five in a row since defeating Bethany in the season opener. They lost to Evangel 44-6 in their game before the break and fell to McPherson 42-21 the previous week.

Opponents have averaged 42.3 points and 476.3 yards this season. Avila is averaging 26.7 points and 353.5 yards (224.7 passing) per game.

Quarterback Eli Williams has had a terrific sophomore season thus far. A transfer from TCU before last season the 6-foot-4 Williams has thrown for 1,334 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also has a team-best 313 yards rushing and seven more touchdowns.

Williams threw for 140 yards, two touchdowns and had 43 yards rushing in Avila's victory over KWU last season.

Kareem Chambers (22 receptions, 225 yards) and Robert Brooks (20-227) are the top wide receivers in 2023. Three others have at least 13 catches.

"(Williams) is the most talented player we'll probably play against. He put up 40-plus (points) on Southwestern, he'll be a challenge to say the least. He's tall, he's fast, and he can see everything. Our job will be to contain him as much as humanly possible and force him to do some things that he's not used to doing, hopefully. We need to keep him in the pocket and make him uncomfortable. Their skill positions are really good, their tailbacks are good, their wide receivers are really good. They're a little young up front. The game is the reverse of the first half of the season when we played a lot of run-heavy teams; (Avila) throws it 80 percent of the time."

"We are going to evaluate it and put the best guy out there (at quarterback) that we think can sustain drives, make really good decisions and score points."

"Whoever dreamt up the (new KCAC) schedule was a genius. (The bye) was really nice, everyone got to relax for a week. It was a welcome respite."

Coyotes travel to Avila to open Bissell Division play, kickoff at 1 p.m. 

The City of Salina is pleased to announce free residential trash disposal for all Saline County residents at the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill on Saturday, October 14.

 Customers must have a Saline County license plate on their vehicle for free disposal. Vehicles from other counties will be required to pay normal tipping fees. Commercial waste haulers will be given priority (standard rates apply).

Customers are encouraged to use caution at all times, follow staff instructions, obey all signs, stay on approved roadways and be prepared for delays. A line is expected to form during this event and the number of customers will be limited at the disposal site and convenience area. Removal of any landfill property, including waste from other customers, is strictly prohibited.

Items not accepted at the landfill include:

Items accepted, but still subject to applicable tipping fees for all commercial and residential customers include brick, concrete, rock, other aggregates, commercial loads (including waste from residents that is anything other than normal household trash), Freon containing items (Freon removal certification required), roofing &amp; other construction materials, boats, sheds, trailers, tires and waste requiring a Special Waste Permit from the KDHE.

The landfill will close promptly at 2 p.m. Customers will not be permitted entrance after closing, even if a line is still present. Normal business hours and fess will resume on Monday October 16.

LINDSBORG - The premiere Kansas celebration of all things Swedish is coming up this month as Lindsborg welcomes the world to the Svensk Hyllningsfest.

The biennial celebration is scheduled for Oct. 13-14 and is packed full of food, fun, arts and crafts, and entertainment.

In a welcome on the Svensk Hyllningsfest website, festival co-chairs&nbsp;Jenell Hulse and Tessa Peters wrote, "Svensk Hyllningsfest (Swedish Honoring Festival) is celebrating our 82nd year of existence and continues to thrive as residents don Swedish costumes, perform Swedish folk dances, and honor those ancestors who settled in this area long ago. This unique festival is not only fun for visitors to get a taste of Sweden in the middle of Kansas, but allows for the community of Lindsborg to flourish and show off the charm and character that attracts so many."

Ever had the Swedish Folk Dancers’ famous Viking on a Stick? Well here's your chance! In addition to the wealth of food providers Lindsborg has to offer, 14 food trucks will be available in the Hungry Vikings Food Court from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

Live entertainment will abound as well at multiple locations. And don't forget the Grand Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Svensk Hyllningsfest Oct. 13-14 in Lindsborg

The Friends of the Salina Public Library will host their Fall book sale weekend from October 13-15 in the lower level next to the Imagination Station at the Salina Public Library, 301 W Elm St.

Become a member of the Friends of the SPL and get an "early bird" preview of the sale on Friday, Oct. 13 from 4-6 p.m.&nbsp;

There are thousands of selections including children's books, adult books, audio books, movies, TV series, music CD’s bargain prices.&nbsp;

According to event organizers, preview day is for Friends members only. The public is encouraged to sign up to become a member. Attendees can sign up to be a Friends member during the sale.

On Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. the sale will be open to the public.
Sunday, Oct. 15 from noon to 4 p.m. is the $5 bag sale which will be open to the public.

In a continued commitment to combat hunger in the state, 24/7 Travel Store has recently concluded its 6th annual Food Bank Fill-Up campaign, raising a total of $51,847.90 in support of nine Kansas food banks during the month of September, National Hunger Awareness Month.

In this year's campaign, four out of the ten participating stores reached the maximum match contribution of $3,000. These stores, Salina-Ninth ($6,306.18), Colby ($7,245.67), Abilene ($8,654.97), and Goodland ($10,798.32), played an instrumental role in rallying community support.

Crawford store raised $1,971.90 and with the added match, a total gift of $3,942.98 was made to the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. The N. Ninth store has broken its own record, raising $3,306.18, and received the maximum company match of $3,000. This brought their total contribution to $6,306.18.National Hunger Action Day, which fell on September 23, emerged as the highest fundraising day, bringing in an impressive $5,039.51, including the company match. Notably, $1,722.90 of that amount came from the Salina stores.24/7 Travel Store, Director of Marketing, Jackie Hynes shared, "This year's Food Bank Fill-Up campaign demonstrates what we can achieve when we stand together to make a difference. Hosting food bank reps on-site on National Hunger Action Day amplified the impact of the campaign, reinforcing the local essence of the donations and encouraging guests to contribute.
