Saline County Jail Activity, Oct. 18

Fans of the theatre will have three chances to see KWU’s latest production, “Radium&nbsp;Girls,” during Homecoming Weekend 2023. Shows will run Oct. 19 (7 p.m.), Oct. 20 (7 p.m.) and Oct. 22 (2 p.m.) in Fitzpatrick Auditorium.&nbsp;

“This year, our Theatre Arts students asked to perform a dramatic play,” said Karen Brassea, associate professor of theatre arts and the play’s director. “Although they loved performing comedic pieces like “The 39 Steps” and “Arsenic and Old Lace,” “Radium&nbsp;Girls” provides them with a new challenge because it is a play based on true events. It examines the social conscience of each character in the midst of discoveries regarding both the positive effects of&nbsp;radium&nbsp;(such as the shrinking of cancerous tumors) and its extreme dangers.”

“Radium&nbsp;Girls”&nbsp;was written by D.W. Gregory and is produced by special arrangement with the Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Ill. The play is based on the true story of the women and men who worked for the United States&nbsp;Radium&nbsp;Corp. in Orange, N.J., and who painted luminous watch faces in the early 1920s. The paint was radioactive, thanks to the presence of&nbsp;radium, leading to severe illnesses and death among the workers.

In addition, representation from the Kennedy Center’s American College Theatre Festival will be on hand, with the goal of determining KWU’s eligibility to apply to perform at that prestigious event.

“These performers are not only Theatre Arts majors,” said Brassea. “We have students majoring in seven different disciplines performing in “Radium&nbsp;Girls!” The combination of well-rounded, experienced actors and those still gaining experience coming together creates a safe zone for growth and team building. We’re excited to see the results!”

KWU Theatre presents, 'Radium Girls' during Homecoming Weekend

On Oct. 18, 1867, the United States took formal possession of Alaska from Russia.

In 1648, Boston shoemakers were authorized to form a guild to protect their interests, becoming the first American labor organization on record.

In 1892, the first long-distance telephone line between New York and Chicago was officially opened.

In 1898, the American flag was raised in Puerto Rico shortly before Spain formally relinquished control of the island to the U.S.

In 1954, Texas Instruments unveiled the Regency TR-1, the first commercially produced transistor radio.

In 1962, James D. Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were honored with the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology for determining the double-helix molecular structure of DNA.

Surrounded by stage lights, microphones, props and, most importantly, her students, Shilind Wheaton, Salina South's new theatre teacher, found her way back to her home after almost 40 years on the West Coast.

According to Wheaton, she felt the kind embrace of the community she left long ago when she moved from Solomon to pursue her acting career.

"I have received nothing but love and warmth in this incredible welcome," Wheaton said. "I've really enjoyed learning their traditions, and they've been so open to some new things."

Wheaton began her career in theatre on the Solomon High School stage, until in 1984, at 17 years old, she moved to Michigan to continue pursuing higher education in performing arts.

A Kansas Wesleyan University professor encouraged Wheaton's parents to send her to a school focused on performing arts due to the talent she showed on stage.

"When you get out of high school, especially coming from a small town, I was at the top of the game here, a big fish. But you're not a big fish when you go to a new school," Wheaton said. "So I was no longer a big fish, and I had to work really, really hard to earn the roles that I was easily getting back home."

After a year in Michigan, Wheaton moved to the West Coast to attend the California Institute of the Art, where she studied to become a full-fledged Hollywood Actress.

"That training program really teaches you what it means to work hard," Wheaton said.

Wheaton finished her degree and began working at Universal Studios in the costume department, alongside getting various acting roles around Hollywood.

A potential role Wheaton auditioned for was the voice of Lisa Simpson from "The Simpsons." She landed in the top three for the character's voice actor, but the role eventually went to American actress Yeardley Smith, who still voices Lisa.

While on the set of "Happy Days," an American sitcom popular in the 1970s, she met actress Lynda Goodfriend, who portrayed Lori Beth on the show.

Wheaton said Goodfriend also acted as a talent manager for other actors, which sparked Goodfriend to ask Wheaton to help coach the young actors on her roster.

"I started coaching actors — they would get copy (script material) for auditions, and I started coaching them with subtext and helping them develop these characters," Wheaton said. "And I'm like, 'Oh, my gosh, I love this.'"

She began coaching various actors within Hollywood, eventually driving her to pursue education full-time. She returned to school for a teaching license and eventual master's degree in theatre production and design.

Before Wheaton began teaching, a particular theater at Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta, California, caught her attention.

She visited the school years before teaching there and saw infinite creativity within the theater's walls, driving her to apply for the open position five years later.

"Then I spent 23 years in that district," Wheaton said.

A contributing factor to Wheaton's move is her desire to remain closer to her parents and family to spend more time with them, which stayed in the Salina area.

Wheaton said she taught schoolchildren in Murrieta Valley all the acting essentials, with how to receive criticism as a core value to her teaching.

Criticism and rejection are integral parts of the entertainment industry, where many fledgling actors find themselves denied for more roles than given.

"We need to encourage our kids to take rejection, and take criticism and stand up and go, that's okay. I'm going to learn from that push forward," Wheaton said. "We have lost our way a little bit of really being advocates for these kids and teaching them what it means when we do fail."

Today, she aims to bring these core teaching values to Salina South High School students, setting her goal to double Salina South's theatre program in the next two years.

"My goal is to grow the theatre arts program here itself so that every student on campus feels they have a place here and can find their inner creativity when it comes to performing arts," Wheaton said.

Salina South High School welcomes new theatre teacher — Shilind Wheaton

On Sunday at 12:22 p.m., a Salina Police Department officer recognized 31-year-old Gabrielle Lesage, a Salina local, as a subject with a warrant.&nbsp;

The officer found Lesage walking in the 1700 block of West Crawford Street and attempted to stop her before she ran from the officer on foot.

Later, officers located her hiding behind a vehicle, where she attempted to flee again. An officer at the scene deployed his taser, but Salina Police Department sergeant Kyle Tonniges said it was ineffective.

A second officer deployed a taser, and this time, it effectively stopped Lesage from fleeing once more. The police department requested charges of felony interference with a law enforcement officer and a Saline County District Court probation violation warrant.

Taser used to subdue Salina local with warrant

On Sunday at 1:40 a.m., the Salina Police Department received a report about an intoxicated man stumbling in a parking lot at the 200 block of South Eighth Street.

Police officers found 28-year-old Nathaniel Sigloch, from Salina, walking in the roadway when they arrived.

According to Salina Police Department sergeant Kyle Tonniges, officers recognized Sigloch's extreme intoxication and transported him to a hospital for treatment.

Tonniges said during his arrest and on the way to the hospital, Sigloch resisted and punched one officer in the head — he also broke an officer's watch and body camera, valued at more than $700.

This caused officers to place Sigloch in a body wrap to restrain him while in transport.

The Salina Police Department requested charges of an intoxicated pedestrian in a roadway, battery of a law enforcement officer, interference with a law enforcement officer and damage to property.

By OLIVIA BERGMEIER Salina Post On Monday evening, just before 9 p.m., at the 2100 block of Roach Street in Salina, 19-year-old Adryana Baxter allegedly threw a padlock at a 62-year-old home health nurse and locked her in a bedroom.

According to Salina Police Department sergeant Kyle Tonniges, an argument started the resulting physical altercation, which caused the victim to call officers at 8:46 p.m. from inside the locked room.

The 62-year-old female victim said after the metal padlock missed her, she backed into one of the home's bedrooms, and Baxter closed and locked the door from the outside.

"There was also another resident there. She was 19 as well, female,"&nbsp; Tonniges said. "She wanted to call the police, but Adryana told her not to, so we charged her with intimidation of a witness."

The Salina Police Department requested charges of aggravated assault, criminal threat and intimidation of a witness.

Teacher/Staff retention is a major priority. The BOE and District Office Team have begun the work needed to address this problem, but there is still work to be done. One change initiated this year was to give student teachers a stipend. We know that teachers are more likely to stay where they student teach. Because of this change, we have increased student-teacher numbers in our buildings and attracted student-teachers from colleges that have traditionally not come to Salina to student-teach.&nbsp;6.In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue?&nbsp;&nbsp;I do not believe in book banning. USD 305 has policies that give the parents control over what their child has access to. Each school website has a library tab that gives library policies and parental oversight instructions. All parents are given the option of providing expressed permission before their student checks out any book.&nbsp; Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. Are you looking for an awesome and amazing way for your kids to build life skills, make new friends and have a lot of fun? Then 4-H is the program for you! 

I am nine years old and a fourth-year member of the Cardinal 4-H Club, and I can’t say enough good things about 4-H. It’s helped me learn all kinds of things and connected me with fun experiences like going to 4-H Camp, taking part in competitions, and showing off my projects at the Tri-Rivers Fair. I’ve also learned new life skills like public speaking, how to run a meeting correctly and how to be more responsible. 

Just this month, our club had a fun potluck to kick off the new 4-H year and welcomed several new members; you could join the fun, too! 4-H membership is open to all youth between the ages of 7 and 18 and a member may join ANY time throughout the year.

 If you, or someone you know is interested in learning more about the 4-H program, please contact our K-State Research and Extension 4-H office at 785-309-5850.

Cardinal 4-H kicks off new year with potluck

A Salina man was arrested on Saturday after he attempted to assault employees and patrons at a grocery store in Salina.&nbsp;

 On October 14 at approximately 11:50 a.m., Salina Police officers responded to a disturbance at Dillon's located at 1201 W. Crawford. Alberto Garcia, a 42-year-old resident of Salina, was allegedly involved in an altercation where he attempted to assault both employees and patrons.

Officers arrested Garcia, but he resisted arrest, leading to the use of a body wrap to subdue him. During the incident, Alberto also made threats to one of the officers, stating his intent to kill them.

KSRE horticulturist shares tips to identify unknown plants

During the early hours on Saturday morning, 11-year-old Enzo Beltran saw his breath from the cold as he scooped up a large piece of plastic from the yard of a north Salina neighborhood home. 

He and his father, Luis Beltran, volunteered for the 2023 Salina Fall Fix-Up, working from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. around the community, and both said they enjoyed helping their neighbors.

On Saturday, dozens of locals descended on the Salina community for volunteer projects, like painting porches at the north end of town and clearing paths along the Smoky Hill River.

Projects on this year's Fix-Up schedule included yard work, landscaping, painting porches and kitchens, picking up trash, replanting downtown planters and performing general clean-ups of community spaces.

At the Smoky Hill River, more than 30 volunteers helped clear the new concrete walking path around Salina's YMCA — part of the Smoky Hill Renewal Project.

"I enjoy seeing all the young people coming out to help at the river," said Friends of the River Foundation executive director Jane Anderson. "There seems to be a lot of momentum around our project, so I really appreciate all the support."

Salina Chamber of Commerce will celebrate this new path at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, with a ribbon cutting at Kenwood Aquatic Park.

Volunteers from various Salina organizations joined the community-led project, including the North Salina Community Development group, which aimed to repaint 50 houses on the north side of town.

North Salina Community Development group president Barb Young said volunteers have finished about two-thirds of the 50 designated houses since 2017.

The group participates during Salina's Fall Fix-Ups and Spring Spruce-Ups, painting two to three houses during each event.

"I love seeing that the change from before and after and seeing other people starting to say, 'I can do that too.'" Young said. "We're starting to see other people fix their properties up, and that ripple effect is what's really rewarding to see."

About a dozen volunteers helped paint porches and landscape community spaces in the northern neighborhoods of Salina. 

Chuck Beery, a long-time Salina resident, recently saw an improvement in his health, so he shared his excitement over getting back out into the community.

"I met some people I've never met before," Beery said. "Someone who goes to the same church as I do, and I've never met him — that's how it works sometimes."

In downtown, a group of volunteers from Salina Area Young Professionals helped to prepare Santa Fe's 46 planters for winter by clearing out dead vegetation and adding new mulch.

Salina Area Young Professionals president Cara Emig said she enjoys volunteering for the Fix-Up and encouraging fellow members of SAYP to do the same.

"I know, especially for Fall Fix-Up, they never have as many volunteers as they do for spring spruce up," Emig said. "So we're trying to help out as much as we can so that it's less for them to do by themselves."

He and his father, Luis Beltran, volunteered for the 2023 Salina Fall Fix-Up, working from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. around the community, and both said they enjoyed helping their neighbors.On Saturday, dozens of locals descended on the Salina community for volunteer projects, like painting porches at the north end of town and clearing paths along the Smoky Hill River.Projects on this year's Fix-Up schedule included yard work, landscaping, painting porches and kitchens, picking up trash, replanting downtown planters and performing general clean-ups of community spaces.<figure>

 </figure>At the Smoky Hill River, more than 30 volunteers helped clear the new concrete walking path around Salina's YMCA — part of the Smoky Hill Renewal Project."I enjoy seeing all the young people coming out to help at the river," said Friends of the River Foundation executive director Jane Anderson. "There seems to be a lot of momentum around our project, so I really appreciate all the support."Salina Chamber of Commerce will celebrate this new path at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, with a ribbon cutting at Kenwood Aquatic Park.<figure>

Fall Fix-Up volunteers lend a hand

A patron of a popular Salina hamburger restaurant was robbed of their bag of hamburgers on Sunday, according to the Salina Police Department.&nbsp;

Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges told Salina Post this morning that on&nbsp; October 15 at 2:40 p.m, officers were dispatched to Cozy Inn at 108 N 7th, for a reported robbery.

"An employee held a bag of sliders out the window for a customer when a man, allegedly grabbed the burgers from the employee's hands," Tonniges said.

Police were able to locate the suspect, who was identified as 35-year-old Aldo Steffen, of Salina.&nbsp;

Tonniges said Steffen was arrested on the requested charge for robbery.&nbsp;

On Monday through Wednesday, October 16th through 18th, APAC Shears of Salina will continue working on the City of Salina’s annual asphalt mill and inlay project. The schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

The work consists of milling the existing asphalt street surface 1.5” to 2” and replacing it with new asphalt to rehabilitate and preserve the pavement section. Permanent pavement markings will be placed shortly after the resurfacing.

Magnolia will be open but flagger controlled. Motorists should expect modest delays and are encouraged to avoid the work zone altogether if possible.

The $1,016,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2023 maintenance capital improvement program.

Mill and inlay work continues

A Salina man was arrested on Saturday after he allegedly attempted to pour hot soup on his wife and resisted officers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Just before 2 p.m. Saturday, Salina Police officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 700 block of W. Ash Street, Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges said this morning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the police report, 40-year-old James Brown, of Salina,&nbsp;allegedly attempted to pour scalding hot soup on his wife during a heated argument. As the confrontation escalated, the victim's son intervened to protect his mother. Brown&nbsp;reportedly threatened the young man with physical violence, provoking a potential&nbsp;fight.&nbsp;

When officers arrived they attempted to arrest Brown but he resisted.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"He resisted officers and had to be placed into a body wrap," Tonniges said. "During the struggle an officer’s watch was damaged."&nbsp;
