Saline County Board of Commissioners March 19 study session agenda

On Friday, March 15, Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a lethal crash where local emergency services pronounced two Salina teens dead on the scene from a head-on collision on West Crawford Street.

Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies reported to the 2800 block of West Crawford Street at 6:26 p.m. just west of Fairchild Road, where a 2001 silver Chevrolet Camaro struck a 2022 blue Chevrolet Silverado head-on.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said deputies investigating the case found evidence that the driver of the silver Camaro, 17-year-old Vance McComber, who died in the crash, was drag racing another blue 2017 Chevrolet Camaro before the crash occurred.

"They're still investigating all the circumstances around it, but at this time, it appears there were indications that they were drag racing west, but for whatever reason, they didn't see the truck coming," Soldan said. "Whether it was the sun or they were distracted by watching what's going on with the guy beside him or what."

Soldan said McComber had two passengers in the vehicle with him, 17-year-old Anthony Windell, who sat in the passenger seat and also died in the crash, and 17-year-old Alphonso Torres Ramirez. 

Local emergency services later transported Torres Ramirez to Salina Regional Health Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The truck, driven by 41-year-old Rosa Vasquez, was traveling eastbound on Crawford with her 12-year-old daughter Judy Vasquez when the vehicles crashed.

Soldan said another vehicle was present at the scene of the crash, which veered out of the way of McComber's car before it crashed into Rosa Vasquez's truck.

Emergency services also transported Rosa and Judy Vasquez to Salina Regional with severe but non-life-threatening injuries.

The second alleged Camaro driver believed to have drag-raced the other Camaro, was identified as a 2017 blue Chevrolet Camaro with one driver and an unknown number of passengers.

Cloud County Community College’s Choirs will present a Dance Mix Concert on Thursday, March 26. The concert, which is free, will be at 7 p.m. in Cook Theatre on the Concordia campus.

The concert will feature the Cloud County Community Chorale/Concert Choir and the Cloud 9 Jazz Choir. Cloud 9’s musical numbers will also feature disco and hip-hop choreography.

The Community Chorale/Concert Choir is a non-auditioned, community vocal ensemble that is open to singers from both the college and area communities.&nbsp;Cloud 9 Jazz Choir is an elite vocal music ensemble at Cloud. This auditioned choir consists of only nine singers divided into SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) parts.&nbsp;

The groups will perform a wide variety of selections, including Dua Lipa’s Dance the Night from the 2023 Barbie movie, Elvis Presley’s Jailhouse Rock, Disco Survives (a medley of the biggest disco hits), and Papa Loves Mambo, as performed by Perry Como.

A Community Health Seminar featuring Shroom-Mates: A Mushrooming Business

The Build Kansas Advisory Committee's approval of a $1.1 million grant to the City of Abilene for the Advancing Abilene Infrastructure &amp; Economic Development Project signifies progress for the industrial park. The award is contingent on a $9 million Federal Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant, part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

If approved, the RAISE Grant will fund the development of 18 acres into shovel-ready lots, including water, sewer, a lift station, and street construction with curbs and guttering. The project will also address transportation upgrades along NW 14th Street, enhancing connectivity and infrastructure in the area.

"This project is transformative for Abilene, enabling us to compete for business opportunities and expand our tax base," said Brandon Rein, Mayor of Abilene. "Unlike neighboring communities, Abilene offers available land along I-70 for industrial development, but it lacks the necessary infrastructure."

The City of Abilene has actively pursued grants for the industrial park since 2022, including Base 1.0 and Base 2.0 grants offered by the Kansas Department of Commerce.

"We are committed to securing external funding to support community projects," said Ron Marsh, City Manager. "By leveraging federal and state grants, we can fuel Abilene's economic growth and create new opportunities."

Past experiences underscore the significance of infrastructure development in the industrial park. In 2018, plans by Washington-based Bradford Built to build in Abilene were withdrawn due to insufficient infrastructure, with estimated improvements costing $2 million.

"While federal grant competitions are extremely time-consuming and competitive, we remain dedicated to securing resources that benefit Abilene," said Julie Roller Weeks, director of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The City's comprehensive plan indicates that future major industrial development will likely be near the Fair Road interchange with I-70. Developing an industrial park in this area, with pad-ready sites featuring utilities and road access, is key to attracting additional industries to Abilene.

Senator Jerry Moran, a Senate Transportation Committee member, has supported the project with a letter of endorsement. The RAISE Grant Awards are expected to be announced on June 27.

The Salvation Army of Salina is hosting a Benefit Concert with Christian Artists Sanctus Real, Unspoken, and JJ Weeks on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Tony’s Pizza Events Center.&nbsp; Tickets range in price from $23, $33 and $45 for VIP.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This past season, the Salvation Army fell $20,000 short of their Christmas Kettle Goal.&nbsp; The Salvation Army depends on these funds to operate throughout the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The Kettle Campaign is our biggest fundraiser of the year.&nbsp; It helps us with about 35% of our annual budget.&nbsp; Without these funds we are not able to meet the needs of our community.&nbsp; This concert will hopefully help us to raise the funds that are needed to offset the loss during our Kettle Campaign,” said Salvation Army&nbsp;Lt. Luke Hursh

The funds raised are used for helping with Rental Assistance, Food Service, including our feeding program, Shelter, food and other items for Fire Victims, Youth Programs, Music Programs, Rehabilitation for individuals involved with Drugs and Alcohol, Summer Camps, and more.&nbsp; “We are hoping to sell out.&nbsp; We have 800 tickets and have sold about 75 at last count.&nbsp; If we do not sell enough tickets this will set us back even more.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ham is a staple for many families’ Easter feast, but between all the varieties available, consumers are often confused on how to safely prepare this holiday favorite.

Kansas State University food safety expert Karen Blakeslee said hams come in two categories: cooked/ready-to-eat, or uncooked.

“Package labels will state if it is uncooked or ready-to eat,” said Blakeslee, who also is coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/">of K-State’s Rapid Response Center for Food Science</a>. “Always read the package label and instructions to be informed on how to safely handle the ham.”

Varieties of cooked ham include canned, vacuum packaged and spiral-cut cooked ham.

“Ready-to-eat ham may be called cooked,” Blakeslee said. “Ham that is not ready-to-eat but has the appearance of ready-to-eat products will bear a statement on the label indicating the product needs cooking.”

All cooked ham can be eaten cold, straight out of the package. If preferred hot, Blakeslee said ham should be heated to an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit in an oven set at a minimum temperature of 325 F. If the ham has been repackaged in a location outside the processing plant -- such as inside the grocery store deli -- heat to an internal temperature of 165 F. Reheat any leftover cooked ham to 165 F.

Blakeslee said the best way to check the internal temperature is to use a food thermometer.

Varieties of uncooked hams can include fresh, cured and smoked – with or without the bone. Blakeslee suggests reading the label and instructions on the package. Some may look like they are ready-to-eat, but they are not and must be cooked thoroughly before eating, she said.

The package should contain directions on how to cook the ham, but for additional guidance, the USDA offers an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/meat-fish/hams-and-food-safety">online timetable for cooking ham</a>. There is a minimum cooking temperature for all uncooked hams.

Kansas Wesleyan announced Friday that Dr. Rebecca Chopp ’74 will speak on Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m. in Peters Science Hall 201. Chopp’s words will immediately follow the annual Best of KWU student presentations and will be part of Spring Alumni and Community Weekend 2024.&nbsp;

The presentation will be open to the public, and afterwards, Chopp will sign copies of her latest book, “Still Me: Accepting Alzheimer’s Without Losing Yourself,” which was published last month.&nbsp;

“It’s always a pleasure to welcome back one of a university’s most distinguished alumni,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “Their presence shows students what’s possible and the true value of a liberal arts education. We are thankful that Dr. Chopp has agreed to share her story not only at the Scholarship Gala, but also with any community member who might wish to hear it.”

Chopp is, indeed, one of Kansas Wesleyan’s most distinguished alumni, having served as the first female chancellor of the University of Denver, 2014-19. She was also the first female president of Swarthmore College and Colgate University and held leadership positions at Emory and Yale universities.

The appearance will be Chopp’s first of two that Saturday, as the academic luminary will offer the keynote address at that evening’s Scholarship Gala. More information on the Gala is available at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kwu.edu/gala2024">www.kwu.edu/gala2024</a>.&nbsp;

On March 16, 1968, the My Lai (mee ly) massacre took place during the Vietnam War as U.S. Army soldiers hunting for Viet Cong fighters and sympathizers killed unarmed villagers in two hamlets of Son My (suhn mee) village; estimates of the death toll vary from 347 to 504.

In 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his crew reached the Philippines, where Magellan was killed during a battle with natives the following month.

In 1802, President Thomas Jefferson signed a measure authorizing the establishment of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

McDonald's employees called the Salina Police Department on Thursday evening after a resident allegedly kissed an employee's hand after repeatedly attempting to conversate with her.

Restaurant employees reported that the man, later identified as 41-year-old Aaron Werner, had been in the store for three to four hours.

Eventually, between 7 and 7:14 p.m., he approached a 20-year-old female employee and allegedly became disorderly.

"[Werner] kept trying to talk to her, shake her hand, and touch her — eventually, he grabbed her hand and kissed it. She said, 'Whoa,' that wasn't working for her," said SPD Capt. David Villanueva. Right before he left, he was belligerent, yelling in the store and becoming disorderly." 

Villanueva said that after employees had told Werner to leave the store, management called SPD. Werner then left McDonald's and crossed Planet Avenue, where officers found him shortly after.

After talking with Werner across the street, officers arrested him. They requested charges for battery, disorderly conduct and interference with a law enforcement officer for crossing the street away from the business.

"Even though it's a misdemeanor offense, the issue is with grabbing a female's hand and kissing it," Villanueva said. "Definitely wasn't welcome conduct or anything like that."

Saline County Jail Bookings, March 16

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

Although the township of Hedville was never officially incorporated, its impact on the Saline County rural community still holds weight today.

On Mulberry Creek Crossing in 1905, two brothers, Axel and Elmer Hedquist, opened a general store and blacksmith shop on the site that would become the town of Hedville.

The brothers continued business in the area, witnessing a few more homes pop up around their stores until a decade later when a regional rail line brought business to the town.

Situated in its small valley, Hedville began to grow in 1915 after the Salina Northern Railroad built a line nearby, according to the Smoky Hill Museum.

After the railroad arrived, so did local business. Soon, the town boasted a lumberyard, hardware store, grain elevator and filling station. The Hedville State Bank opened the same year, and only two years later, the founders established the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Hedville continued its business, growing with more families arriving and establishing themselves in the community. Hardships would soon strike with the arrival of The Great Depression.

Like similar Great Plains towns, the 1930s arrived in Hedville with ruthless consequences. According to the Smoky Hill Museum, the bank and many businesses closed in town, with the Immanuel Church closing its doors for good in 1938.

Only two decades after the decimating Great Depression for the town, Hedville's rural school closed from the 1960s statewide consolidation of public schools.

A few residents of Hedville stayed in the town, and although little remains of its early 20th-century growth, the small community found a new revival at the turn of this century with the Rolling Hills Zoo.

Rolling Hills Zoo opened in 1999 with only a few barn animals just south of town, and today, it has become a major Kansas tourist attraction.&nbsp;

A prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation will help a University of Kansas Department of Physics &amp; Astronomy professor continue her groundbreaking research on supermassive black holes.

Elisabeth Mills, assistant professor of physics &amp; astronomy, received the five-year, $821,724 grant from the NSF for her research on how supermassive black holes grow.

Every galaxy, including our own Milky Way galaxy, has a supermassive black hole at its center, yet very little is known about how black holes gather gas from their surroundings to grow bigger. Mills will use some of the world’s most powerful telescopes — the Very Large Array in New Mexico and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile — to observe supermassive black holes in neighboring galaxies.

She said the goal is to study the gas and dust in the centers of these galaxies to better understand when they might become the next meal for the black holes.

“This work helps us understand how our own Milky Way galaxy has been formed and how the growth of its black hole might change our galaxy in the future,” Mills said.

The NSF’s CAREER Award is the most prestigious awards given to faculty members beginning their independent careers, providing support to advance outstanding research through commitment to teaching, learning and disseminating knowledge. Along with helping to develop her research, Mills said the award will also support department outreach efforts, like the popular KU AstroNights telescope viewing events, as well as provide important opportunities for KU students.

“It gives students in my group the opportunity to make connections with internationally renowned astronomers from all over the world and makes KU visible on an international stage,” she said.&nbsp;

Arash Mafi, executive dean of KU’s College of Liberal Arts &amp; Sciences, said the award is a reflection of the high caliber of research taking place within the College.

“We are thrilled that the NSF has recognized Professor Mills’ innovative work,” Mafi said. “It is further proof of the world-class research being conducted across the College of Liberal Arts &amp; Sciences.”

Mills will use some of the world’s most powerful telescopes — the Very Large Array in New Mexico and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile — to observe supermassive black holes in neighboring galaxies.She said the goal is to study the gas and dust in the centers of these galaxies to better understand when they might become the next meal for the black holes.“This work helps us understand how our own Milky Way galaxy has been formed and how the growth of its black hole might change our galaxy in the future,” Mills said.The NSF’s CAREER Award is the most prestigious awards given to faculty members beginning their independent careers, providing support to advance outstanding research through commitment to teaching, learning and disseminating knowledge. KU Department of Physics & Astronomy professor receives prestigious NSF award for black hole research

Surrounded by friends, family and coworkers, Bob Wege retired from Propane Central last Friday after a 26-year career at the company. Long before that, though, Wege started his career driving gas trucks almost half a century ago.

Before Wege started his quarter-century-long career at Propane Central, he began hauling propane in Manhattan for a different company in 1977.

Eventually, he and his family moved to the Salina area to work for a company that would become Propane Central.

"I've been hauling gas for 47 years," Wege said. "I do know it's been that many years, same job — the company's just got a different name."

At his retirement celebration, staff and family members surprised Wege with hamburgers, bratwursts, cake, flowers, a signed wooden plaque and a wooden Propane Central model truck with his name.
