&nbsp;Seven members of the Central Kansas District (CKD) 4-H Shooting Sports program recently traveled south of Topeka to compete at the Kansas 4-H State Archery Match on Saturday, September 30. 

To participate at the state level, youth must have shot an eligible score at one of several regional qualifiers earlier in the summer.

"We start practicing usually in the spring," said Cade Rensink, executive director for the CKD office. "Historically we've started even before school was out for the summer but this year we started right after school got out in May and the state shoot was here in September which was the end of the season."

Rensink said qualifiers, the name given to archery competitons, take place all across the state and occur typically each week of the archery season.&nbsp;

"We've gone as far as Hays to the west, Wichita to the South, Horton to the northeast. In years passed we've been clear down to Eureka," Rensink said.

In total, there were over 180 4-H members from 25 different local Extension units. Those making the trip from Central Kansas District (CKD) were Bailey Mader and Kaydence Freemen of Bennington, Charlie Klein, Coy Malmberg, Callan Rensink, and Colyer Rensink from Minneapolis, and Andrew Knopf of Gypsum. Mader and Klein shot in the Senior Age Division with all others entered in the Junior Age Division.

Rensink said those interested in competitive archery can start after they turn 10 years old.&nbsp;

"They can actually start practicing at the age of nine but the competition side of it won't kick in until they're 10," Rensink said. "This is just to give them a little bit extra time, extra size and a little bit of maturity, but that's relative at that age."

The cut-off age for competitive archery within 4-H is determined on January 1, so as long as a participant is 18 on January 1, they can still compete.&nbsp;

The district was represented in several classes including Open Compound, Compound Bowhunter and Barebow (Recurve). Each discipline consisted of a FITA Target Course and 3-D Trail Course. Combined scores for the two courses make up the Aggregate Score. Several season bests were obtained as well as two personal records.

In the Junior Division, three young men brought home awards. Coy Malmberg was fourth in Aggregate for Compound Bowhunter. In the Barebow discipline, Callan Rensink placed fifth in Trail and his brother, Colyer, placed third. Malmberg was fifth in the Aggregate while Colyer Rensink took fourth. The team of Callan Rensink and Coy Malmberg was named third high overall in Junior Barebow. This marks the first year there have ever been any state placers from the district.

When asked what interests kids about competitive archery, Rensink said it was because some young people want to participate in a program with a bit of "flair."

&nbsp;"They [4-H'ers] just want a little bit different flair than you know the other projects we offer," Rensink said. "They can participate with us and some of those kids do hunt but honestly for a lot of these kids, this is their sport. They are not maybe into football, baseball, or basketball, but this is this is their thing. And they do it more from the standpoint of they just want to be part of the team. They want to have a sense of belonging and have that mastery of a skill."

With the archery season complete, attention now turns to the State 4-H Shotgun Match on October 14 and 15 near Wichita. CKD will have seven youth contending for top spots in Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays.

Local 4-H members place at state archery match

Are you ready to embark on a journey through time and history? This Saturday, an iconic piece of railroad heritage, the&nbsp;1919 Baldwin 4-6-2 “Pacific” type locomotive, Santa Fe #3415&nbsp;steam engine, will make its final run before undergoing an FRA mandatory overhaul. 

The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad invites you to participate in this historic moment as we bid farewell to this magnificent&nbsp;locomotive.

The Santa Fe #3415 steam engine is not just any train — it's a true masterpiece of engineering and a symbol of a bygone era. This locomotive has been a beloved part of our railroad's history and a cherished sight for both locals and visitors alike.

With its sleek design and powerful steam-driven heart, the Santa Fe #3415 has captured the imagination of train enthusiasts for generations. But what makes this locomotive truly special is the stories it carries. 

It has traversed countless miles of track, carrying passengers and freight, witnessing the changing landscapes and cultures along the way. Its whistle has echoed through valleys, its wheels have rolled over bridges, and its smokestack has billowed steam into the sky. 

Riding aboard the Santa Fe 3415 is like stepping into a living time capsule, offering a unique glimpse into the past.

The 1919 Baldwin 4-6-2 “Pacific” type locomotive, Santa Fe #3415, was moved to its present location at the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad yard in April 1996 from the city park in Abilene where it had spent the last 40 years. 

Locomotive #3415 was built in 1919 and was in regular service in Santa Fe’s Argentine District out of Kansas City. The railroad donated the locomotive to the city of Abilene in 1954, and it was placed in the city park.

In 1996, the city donated it to the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad. It was moved from the park and placed on the railroad’s tracks near the depot, where it sat on display until restoration was started in 2005. 

This is the only operating steam locomotive in the state and is one of only three operational, former Santa Fe steam locomotives. The steamer has operated about once a month on special weekends on our five-mile-long track, a former Rock Island Railroad branch, through the Smoky Hill River Valley between Abilene and Enterprise, Kansas.

On Friday, Sept. 15, 30 photographers from across the nation visited Abilene for a photography ride along the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad as a fundraiser by Dak Dillon, owner of St. Louis-based&nbsp;Hub &amp; Spoke, a boutique marketing and creative agency.

"I would call the photoshoot a kind of an extension of what the steam locomotive is for the railroad and really for the entire tourism industry in Abilene because it is its symbol. It's a symbol everywhere," said Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad volunteer Steve Smethers.&nbsp;

The event raised $10,000 toward the locomotive's complete remodel. Smethers said this would fund the first step of the $600,000 remodel.

"I think that really illustrates just the power in the draw of the steam locomotive," Smethers said.

The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad plans to host photography events in the future, even while Santa Fe #3415 undergoes its FRA mandatory overhaul.

This means it will be out of commission for the foreseeable torture until funding is available to complete this massive undertaking,&nbsp;which is essential maintenance to ensure its continued safe operation. 

This last run is your final opportunity to experience the magic of this historic steam engine before it temporarily retires from the tracks.

Passengers last chance before the overhaul will be on Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation is partnering with the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education (KCAE) to host the Fly Kansas Air Tour from Thursday, Oct. 5, to Saturday, Oct. 7.

“The Fly Kansas Air Tour brings airplanes within reach for over 1,000 children in only three days - an experience we hope many will look back on as their first step into aviation,” said Bob Brock, KDOT Director of Aviation. “Kansas maintains thousands of aviation jobs, and an interest in the industry could lead them to exciting aviation career opportunities in the future.”

Over 50 pilots and corporate sponsors have already registered to fly the Air Tour this year, visiting 10 communities across Kansas. The tour includes presentations related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) as well as the new jobs and economic growth that aviation industries bring to rural Kansas communities. Highlights for this year include opportunities for students to learn from pilots, attend community events and view aircraft participating in the tour.

2023 Fly Kansas Air Tour to stop in Salina 

Scammers are using social media to go after your money and personal information. And it’s working: since 2021,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2023/10/ftc-data-shows-consumers-report-losing-27-billion-social-media-scams-2021">people have reported</a>&nbsp;losing $2.7 billion to scams that started on social media — way more than with any other contact method.

Scammers like social media because they can pretend to be someone they’re not. They can hack your profile, pretend to be you, and con your friends. They can target you and others using information from your profile like your age, hobbies, and what you buy. And they can do all this at little to no cost.

So what do social media scams often look like? Scammers might target you with an ad for something, but after you pay (for the thing that turns out to be fake), they take your money and run. Or they might try to sell you on a bogus investment opportunity (often involving cryptocurrency). Or they might send a friend request out of the blue and pretend to be a potential love interest. But then…they ask for money.

To avoid these and other scams on social media:

● Use your&nbsp;privacy settings&nbsp;to limit who can see your information and what you post.

●Don’t reply to messages that ask for money or personal information. Even if the message looks like it’s from a friend or family member, their account may have been hacked. Call them to check.

●Before you buy something,&nbsp;check out the company. Search online for its name along with words like “scam” or “complaint.”

FTC: That friend request could be from a scammer

Beginning Monday, October 6, the City of Salina Public Works Department has changed the starting time on the school zone around the St. Mary’s School so that it will begin at an earlier time.

7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. &amp; 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Motorists are encouraged to be aware of children and school buses and to practice extra caution while traveling through these school zones.

St. Mary’s Grade School zone time change

The 4th&nbsp;Annual Coyote Crazy Parkinson’s Benefit Poker Walk was held on September 9 at Brown’s Park south of Abilene. The event is held in honor of coyote hunting enthusiast, Dennis Rider, Abilene, and all others fighting the fight against Parkinson’s Disease. The Coyote Crazy committee wanted to continue to keep the funds local.

 Coyote Crazy recently donated $20,000 to Impact Sports and Fitness, in Abilene, for the Parkinson’s program. The amount is the same as the donation in each of the last two years.

“The funds donated to Impact Sports and Fitness allow individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s to receive monthly memberships, classes, and personal training sessions” said Anita Larson, Impact Sports and Fitness Manager. “It’s a great service for our community members to continue to utilize our facility and take part in our program at no cost to the individual. We are very appreciative to have been chosen to receive these funds from the Coyote Crazy event to allow us to provide those with Parkinson’s the opportunity to stay active,” continued Larson.

Coyote Crazy event in Abilene leads to significant local donation

On this day back in 2016, an unseasonably warm, moist airmass was in place across the southern and central Plains on Thursday, Oct. 6. 

Storms developed along a cold front that surged east across the state. A supercell thunderstorm developed along this feature and produced two tornadoes in eastern Saline County.

The first tornado to touch down that day did so at 4:14 p.m. just north of East Mentor Road in southeast Saline County, where it destroyed a barn and some trees.

The EF-2 twister reached windspeeds of 112 mph and traveled for a quarter of a mile. There were no recorded injuries or deaths.

A second tornado touched down shortly after at 4:20 p.m. just east of Salina near the town of Solomon. It destroyed a manufactured home in the countryside, lifting it off its foundation and spreading debris.

This EF-3 tornado reached estimated windspeeds of 140 mph, stretching its path to more than six miles when it traveled from south of East Magnolia Road to north of East Country Club Road.

There were no deaths or injuries during this tornadic event.&nbsp;

In addition to the tornadoes, numerous storms resulted in very heavy rain across mainly southeast Kansas, causing flash flooding and river flooding. Several water rescues were performed, along with flooded homes in Allen County.&nbsp;

On October 5, Officers with the Salina Police Department were sent to Access Storage, 1433 N. Ninth St. in Salina for a report of a burglary. 

The storage unit owner located a lock that had been broken off a unit. After reviewing the surveillance video, it was learned an unknown suspect had damaged the lock and stolen property from inside the unit. 

The suspect entered the unit at approximately 10:40 PM on October 4. After reviewing additional video the suspect was also seen at the storage unit earlier in the day

Banned Books Week, Oct. 1-7, has been held annually for over 40 years to celebrate individuals’ freedom to choose what they read, despite past, current, and future attempts to censor books in various institutions such as libraries and schools. 

Each year, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tracks and documents reports of book censorship/challenges in libraries, compiling lists of the most challenged books nationwide. 

In 2022, the ALA recorded a record-breaking number of challenges to over 2,500 individual titles, with preliminary data showing a continued rise in challenges in 2023. Most books are challenged on the grounds of being written by or containing content about LGBTQ+ persons and Black, Indigenous, and people of color.&nbsp;

By drawing attention to the negative effects of censorship on communities, Banned Books Week helps to inspire readers everywhere to defend their right to read. 

Most of these challenges fail to take hold thanks to the continued efforts of teachers, students, community members, and librarians. City Lights Stage, located at Ash Street and Santa Fe Avenue, hosted other local bands this summer, with Bootleg Mercy to finish out the season.

According to its website, the Kansas-based hard rock group began as a cover band in the early 2010s but released its first original EP, or "extended play," in 2014 titled "Pictures."

Since then, the music group has continued to release music that garnered international accolades and played in the number-one spot for Los Angeles-based <a href="https://www.indiestarradio.com/">Indie Star Radio</a>’s Top 21 for four straight weeks.

Salina Downtown will also host an Artist's Reception from 5 to 8 p.m. at 116 East Iron Avenue, celebrating Tom Fleming's "Stairs of Methuselah" by Subvert Studio.

"Noises Off" takes a fond look at the follies of theatre folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss, and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure. This play-within-a-play captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of "Nothing On" in three stages: dress rehearsal, performance during the tour, and a performance towards the end of a debilitating run.

Central Theatre teacher and director of "Noises Off",&nbsp;Barbara Hilt said this isn't the first time "Noises Off" has been performed at Central.&nbsp;

“Noises Off is one of the most well-known farces of all time," Hilt said. &nbsp;"This script has been performed by many high schools and theatre groups around the country as well as at least twice at Central High School if not more. The last time it was performed at Central High School was around 2008 and Central High School took their performance to the Kansas Thespian Festival and to the International Thespian Festival that year."

 Frayn gives us a window into the inner workings of theatre behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance. Brimming with slapstick comedy, "Noises Off" is a delightful backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, falling trousers, and -- of course -- flying sardines!

Ticket prices for the production are $10 for adults, $5 for students with ZERO credit service charges added to this price if using a credit card online to pre-purchase tickets.

"Our ticket prices are just a bit higher than our other plays this season so that we can help to offset the cost of having our show adjudicated. We have also waived all online credit processing fees this year so that we can better serve our patrons," Hilt said.&nbsp;

This production is being submitted to the Kansas Thespian Festival for mainstage adjudication. Running time is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes including two 10-minute intermissions between each act.

"We hope that our production brings back nostalgia for any Salina residents that were a part of the performances or have seen the show in the past and also that we have added our bits of humor to process. We hope that we are selected for mainstage performance at the Kansas Thespian Festival. Thank you to everyone who comes out to support Mustangs Central Theatre! They were in previous CHS shows such as One Man, Two Guv’nors as Christine and acted and directed in one acts. They made their debut on the Theater Salina stage in Bus Stop. In their free time, Q enjoys reading and listening to music. This is their second show in the round and it’s their favorite form of staging. They hope you enjoy the show— from every angle.

He has been in Central productions of The Explorers Club (Lucius), Anastasia (dancer/ensemble) and also partcipates in many Theatre Salina productions and is a member of the Iron Street Dance Company. GARRY LEJEUNE…………………..…....ZANDER FLENER* Zander most recently played Sky in Mamma Mia! He is the son of Chris and Angel Flener. Zander is a member of Free Spirit and has been in choir for six years. He just attended the Kansas All-State Choir. This is Zander's first play and he is so excited for everyone to see the hard work that the cast and crew has put into this performance.

BROOKE ASHTON…………….MACKENZIE MARTINEZ* Mackenzie is the grand-daughter of Rex and Ronda Lovin. This is Mackenzie's first play ever! She has appeared in Anastasia and Mama Mia!, but never in a any non-musical prior. She hopes that everyone enjoys this wacky, crazy farce of a show! Saline County Jail Activity, Oct. 6

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the Smoky Hill Museum. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present “Salina-Flashback Fridays.”

As the lights fade, the curtains part and the opening credits begin for "Not Exactly Gentlemen" starring Fay Wray in Salina's newest Art Deco theatre — the Fox Watson Theatre.

The new venue opened in late February 1931 with chandeliers, textured walls and mirrored ceilings, which welcomed patrons to glamorous rooms and the latest films.

Salina businessman W. W. Watson donated the land at 151 S Santa Fe Avenue, and the 1930s Kansas City architectural firm Carl and Robert Boller designed the grand theatre.

Matinee movie showings would cost 35 cents, an evening show for 50 and children tickets at 10 cents.

The Fox Watson continued showing movies for 55 years until 1987 when the venue closed. However, the community retained its adoration of the building, eventually getting it on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Some notable musicians welcomed to the Stiefel's stage include BB King, Merle Haggard, Alison Krauss and The Avett Brothers.The Stiefel continues to host famous musicians and performers, including Martina McBride, on Friday, Dec. 1, and early next year, with Kansas performing on Saturday, March 23, 2024.
