The 10th Annual Love, Chloe Family Fun Run will take place in beautiful downtown Salina on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 8 a.m. The Fun Run features a one mile walk/run, a 5k walk/run and a 10k run. It’s a morning of FUNdraising for childhood cancer families across Kansas.

“We are excited to have historic downtown Salina as the backdrop for our 2024 Family Fun Run," said Heidi Feyerherm-Smith, Love, Chloe founder and president. “The more spacious road route is perfect for our participants to walk and run safely and to enjoy the scenery through downtown and Oakdale and Kenwood Parks. Last year’s event brought in nearly 500 participants. This year we hope to exceed 600!”

With lower registration fees for the entire family and an option to not receive an event shirt, families can enjoy the morning as we honor and remember our childhood cancer warriors and raise money for these amazing families.

Registration includes a custom cinnamon roll race bib and finisher medal, an event shirt and delicious treats, including cinnamon rolls, of-course, afterwards. Participants can register today at: <a href="http://lovechloerun.org">lovechloerun.org</a>

Fundraising events like the Family Fun Run are becoming more and more important as requests from Kansas families who are navigating a childhood cancer diagnosis reach out for help at an increased rate. The number of families we assisted in 2023 doubled in comparison to 2022. 

Love, Chloe provides support to Kansas childhood cancer families through&nbsp;<a href="http://www.warriorwagonsinc.com/">Warrior Wagons</a>, financial assistance grants and gas cards. The cards are funded through our “<a href="https://lovechloe.org/fueling-the-fight">Fueling the Fight”</a> distinctive license plate available across the state.

In addition, Monkey in My Chair, which was created by Heidi Feyerherm-Smith, keeps children connected to their classmates across the United States, and with partnerships in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and soon, Japan! The Monkey kit is always free to childhood cancer families.

According to the Love Chloe Foundation website, Chloe was born March 1, 2000. A millennium baby and just one day shy of being a&nbsp;leap day baby. Chloe grew up loving all girly things. She loved pink, purple, shopping,&nbsp;shoes, dolls and dressing up. Chloe knew how to make you laugh and was quite the&nbsp;entertainer. Chloe attended Coronado Elementary where she made many friends and&nbsp;did very well in school. &nbsp;

On November 6, 2006 a trip to the doctor changed her and her family’s lives forever. A few weeks&nbsp;before, a family member noticed that one side of Chloe's face looked a little different. After a trip&nbsp;to the doctor, it was determined that it was just Bells Palsy. 

This condition is usually&nbsp;temporary and only affects the facial muscles. It wasn't until they realized that Chloe&nbsp;had lost her hearing on the same side that they knew something else was going on. When Chloe went in for an MRI the next day and found out the worst news possible. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Chloe was&nbsp;diagnosed with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). This is a tumor that is growing&nbsp;in the brainstem and cannot be removed with surgery. The diagnosis was grim, but&nbsp;did not discourage her or her family from trying to beat it. 

They started the fight with six weeks&nbsp;of radiation treatments. The follow up MRI did not bring the news they had hoped&nbsp;for. Although it didn't appear to be growing, the tumor had not gotten any smaller. &nbsp;

In spite of the disappointing news, they continued on and began looking for other options. In the meantime, Chloe was able to go on a wonderful Make-A-Wish trip to Disneyworld. After the trip to Florida, her wish continued with a trip to the zoo to help feed the animals. Chloe loved monkeys and the chance to feed a lemur was priceless for her. &nbsp;

Her family decided to go to Texas Children's Hospital to continue with Chloe's battle. They do lots of research there and they were able to get into one of their clinical trials. 

Chloe's family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Houston during her treatment. She remained on the&nbsp;trial from May through the beginning of August.

 The MRI in August&nbsp;showed a 30 percent growth in the tumor and Chloe had to come off the&nbsp;study. The doctors had nothing else to offer and Chloe was losing more&nbsp;of her ability to walk. Chloe then started on an oral chemo for about a month,&nbsp;but only saw Chloe get tired and worn out from it. She also tried Vitamin&nbsp;C treatments for her last month.

In Chloe's last month, she could no longer&nbsp;walk or swallow on her own. Chloe never let the tumor affect her spirit or&nbsp;love of life, until she was on a feeding tube. Although she hated the tube,&nbsp;she continued to fight against the tumor. &nbsp;

It was on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 that Chloe was freed of all her&nbsp;physical ailments and earned her wings in heaven. She fought hard and&nbsp;inspired all those around her.

10th Annual Love, Chloe Family Fun Run scheduled for April 20

The Women of Achievement Committee is excited to announce the opening of honoree nominations and a save the date for the 2024 Recognition event.

A Woman of Achievement is someone who has made important contributions through her volunteer and/or professional activities in the categories below.

- Service to Community: Recognizes women who make contributions of time within their place of employment or through personal/volunteer efforts to their community and/or country.

- Education: Recognizes women who are public or private sector educators, trainers, or administrators who demonstrate an ability to engage ad impact their community through their role(s) in education.

Women of Achievement now accepting nominations, May 20 deadline

The 40th Salina Spring Poetry Series, sponsored and organized by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, continues on Tuesday, April 23, with a reading by Bradford Tice. 

The reading will begin at 7 pm at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave). Admission will be $5 cash at the door and free for students with ID. 

Traci Brimhall, Kansas Poet Laureate, curated this year’s series. Brimhall selected poets with a broad range of perspectives who will share their work in Salina this month. 

“I love what Bradford Tice does with poetry and history. In his collection What the Night Numbered, he unites mythic figures and the Stonewall riots. His persona poems unlock so many necessary statements about death, desire, and coming-of-age. History feels utterly present tense in his work, and it teaches me ways to help poems remember what the world has forgotten,” said Brimhall. 

Bradford Tice is the author of two books of poetry: Rare Earth (New Rivers Press, 2013), which was named the winner of the 2011 Many Voices Project and a 2014 Debut-litzer finalist, and What the Night Numbered (Trio House Press, 2015), winner of the 2014 Trio Award. His poetry and fiction have appeared in such periodicals as The Atlantic Monthly, North American Review, The American Scholar, Epoch, and Best American Short Stories 2008. His poetry was also selected as the winner of Prairie Schooner’s 2009 Edward Stanley Award.

Bradford currently teaches at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln.

Bradford Tice to read in Salina Spring Poetry Series, April 23

BY SALINA POST Information courtesy Greater Salina Community Foundation The 13th year of Match Madness proved to be “The Lucky One,” raising over $1.1 million in a single day for 100 local nonprofits, setting a new record.

On March 21, donors contributed $786,246 to 100 nonprofit endowed funds held at the Greater Salina Community Foundation for long-term support. That combined with $320,171 in matching funds and bonus prizes brought the total impact for the day to $1,106,417.

“The amount of generosity that flowed through the Fieldhouse that day blows me away,” said Jessica&nbsp;Martin, President &amp; Executive Director. “We had donations of all sizes that when added together made a big impact. That’s the definition of community.”

The event was held at the Salina Fieldhouse from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. where donors could make their donation and visit one of the 74 nonprofit booths that were set up ready to share about their mission.&nbsp;All donations were matched up to 50% in the form of an instant cash grant to the charity from a $313,000 match pool.&nbsp;

Nonprofits also had the opportunity to earn up to $130 in the Bill Grevas Minute to Win It Free Throw Contest sponsored by Bennington State Bank and $1,300 in the BE Wealth Half Court Shot contest.&nbsp;

Saline County&nbsp;5th&nbsp;Graders

This was also a record year&nbsp;for&nbsp;Saline County&nbsp;fifth graders. When Ken and&nbsp;Karen Ebert decided to sponsor the USD 305&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;graders in 2023, they hoped it would inspire others to do the same —and it did! 

Thanks to the generosity of several donors&nbsp;every&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;grader in Saline County was able to donate $10 to&nbsp;their&nbsp;favorite charity at Match Madness.&nbsp;Overall, 634 fifth graders participated, supporting 84 of the 100 charities.

One goal of taking students to Match Madness is to teach them about philanthropy and the joy of giving.

 “A small donation can make a huge difference,”said Fifth grader Blakely Chamberlain.

Blakely’s gift is also endowed meaning her $10 donation will grow to $46 in 20 years. This may not seem like a lot, but when Blakely’s donation is combined with all the 634&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;graders, their&nbsp;donation of $6,340&nbsp;will grow to $29,164&nbsp;in 20 years,&nbsp;all while making annual grants to nonprofits.&nbsp;

The day ended with a celebration and after party at the Prickly Pear from 7-11 p.m. where nonprofits, donors and Foundation&nbsp;staff watched the final numbers tally in for what really proved to be “The Lucky One!”&nbsp;

“Match Madness is always a terrific day for our community and for everyone who participates, so there is always a feeling of not wanting it to end.&nbsp; Extending the in-person giving window until 11pm at The Prickly Pear was a terrific way for everybody to continue the fun and celebrate the huge impact that donors make for our community,” said Michael Chambers, GSCF’s VP of Community Impact.

Since 2012, Match Madness has generated nearly $6 million for 112 local nonprofits.&nbsp;

Salina Match Madness breaks fundraising record

Strong to severe storms are possible early tonight across south central and southeast Kansas. If storms develop, they will be capable of damaging winds up to 60 mph, hail up to golf ball size, and a tornado cannot be ruled out. The risk should shift primarily into northeast Kansas after midnight.

Effective immediately, the voting location for residents who previously voted at St. Mary’s Grade School at 304 E. Cloud St. has been moved to St. Mary’s Parish Center at 230 E. Cloud St. This change will be in place for the primary election on August 06, 2024.

The move will allow for St. Mary's Grade School to remain a polling location, while still having school in session on election day.

"We're just moving the location from our grade school cafeteria to the parish hall," said St. Mary's Grade School Principal, Tym Bonilla. "We definitely love being part of the voting process and we love being part of the citizenship concept and participating in that."

The Saline County Election Office has sent out postcards to all affected voters detailing the new location. Voters are urged to confirm their registration details and familiarize themselves with the new voting site well before Election Day.

"We just like having school throughout the week and not having to have a time where we have to take off school," Bonilla said. "It makes it difficult for our families."

Saline County announces polling location change

A Kansas Wesleyan student has been asked to join a breakout session at the Kansas Collegiate Media state convention on April 22 at Wichita State University.

Senior Aubreigh Heck will participate in a panel discussion of the importance of covering local sports, especially high school, and how some of the best and most rewarding sports journalism is done at the local level.

Heck also will touch on covering sports as a woman and what kind of challenges she’s experienced covering high school sports in Hutchinson and Salina.

Heck is double-majoring in Communications and Public Relations. She also serves at the editor-in-chief of KWU Student Media.

This panel also will include Scott Paske from Kansas State High School Activities Association, and formerly of the Wichita Eagle; Charles Chaney from The El Dorado Times-Gazette; and Joel Muhs from the McPherson Sentinel.&nbsp;

KWU Student to Speak at Panel on Coverage of High School Sports

Cloud County Community College’s Theatre Department will present its spring play, “The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong,” by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, April 25-27 in Cook Theatre on the Concordia campus.&nbsp;

Showtime for all three nights will be at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5, but CCCC students will be admitted free.&nbsp;

An amateur drama society is putting on the classic whodunit, The Murder at Haversham Manor. And the fate of the drama society is riding on the play's success. Unfortunately, just about everything that could go wrong, does. Will the intrepid troupe keep playing long enough to uncover the murderer?

The play is directed by Cloud County’s theatre instructor, Julia Burr-Roveti, and is presented by arrangement with Dramatists Play Service under license from Mischief Worldwide Ltd.

NWS Wichita — Three day weather forecast, chance for thunderstorms

After popping a tire on East Old 40 Highway in Saline County, a resident left their 1999 gold GMC Yukon with the keys in the ignition and found it was missing the following day.

Saline County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jim Hughes said the resident had left the Yukon in the 2500 block of East Old 40 Highway on Sunday, April 14, and when they returned the following morning around 8:30 a.m., it was gone.

"It was parked on the side of the road with some mechanical issues, specifically with a blown tire, and the keys were in the ignition, and it had a full gas tank," Hughes said.

The resident left the vehicle on the roadside to complete some work in the area.

Hughes said the Yukon had a deer decal on the back window, and its value totaled $3,000. The owner reported that the vehicle bears a Kansas tag that reads SAS662.

Salina Post has learned from Athletic Director Ryan Mortimer that John Darrow has resigned from his role as head boy's basketball coach at Minneapolis.

Darrow, who will be concluding a 30-year coaching career, spent 24 seasons working in Minneapolis, leading the girl's team for 15, and the boys for the last nine.

During his run at the head of the boys' program, Minneapolis posted an overall record of 75-114 but surged to three straight winning seasons from 2018-2021, earning a top-three league finish in each of those campaigns.

Darrow will finish out the school year teaching high school algebra and physics but plans to retire this spring.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas is accepting applications for its 2024 session. The event is set to be held Sunday, June 2, through Saturday, June 8, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This will be the program’s 32nd consecutive session at KSU and 86th overall.

Traditionally, Kansas Boys State is for individuals who will complete their junior year of high school in the spring just prior to the start of each session. However, the ALBSK program will again expand the pool of applicants for this year’s session to include those who will complete their sophomore year of high school this spring.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas program provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation.

 Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government, and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

The cost to attend the Boys State of Kansas program is $375; however, in many instances, sponsors pay the majority of the fees, with the delegate or his family paying $50. Those wishing to attend the 2024 session should visit ksbstate.org to apply. The deadline to apply for the 2024 program is Tuesday, April 30; applications are accepted after that date, but on a space-available basis.

On April 17, 1961, some 1,500 CIA-trained Cuban exiles launched the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in an attempt to topple Fidel Castro, whose forces crushed the incursion by the third day.
