Temperatures plummeted this week in Salina, with the recorded temperature from Saturday, Nov. 18, at 70 degrees and this Saturday, Nov. 25, with an expected low of 23 degrees.

Randy Picking, 910 KINA Coffee Talk Co-Host, said during the morning talk show, "Four inches is what the models that I follow are forecasting. The good news is, wind is not going to be a problem."

Wind chills may not be a problem on Saturday while multiple inches of snow accumulates. Still, according to Saline County Emergency Management Deputy Director Natasha Cundy, Sunday morning would be frosty.

"Sunday, the windchill is going to be in the single digits, so be prepared to bundle up if you're going outside," Cundy said. "Remember, if you have to shovel snow, it will be heavy due to the wet snow conditions."

Current predictions from the Wichita National Weather Service show a few more inches of snowfall for the Salina region, with expected precipitation to accumulate quickly during the day.

Sunday and Monday will follow with single-digit wind chills during the early morning hours, followed by afternoon temperatures around 40 degrees.

According to Wichita NWS Meteorologist Vanessa Pearce, the predicted snowfall for Salina will be around five to seven inches.

Some parts of the state may see more of a wintery mix than snow, but snowpack is likely for north and western Kansas towns.

"We're thinking it'll be snow up there — you won't see that mix," Pearce said. "The mix will be more across South Central into Southeast Kansas, kind of closer to the Kansas turnpike."

Wichita NWS predicted that 3 p.m. would be the peak of Saturday's storm,  with a predicted high temperature of 33 degrees.

This storm will likely cause reduced visibility in the afternoon, and the thick snowfall will cause slick conditions for motor vehicles.

"It's falling during the daytime hours when people are out and about or trying to do different activities," Pearce said. "Especially with the rates that are going to be occurring — the snowfall rates are going to cause that accumulation."

Pearce warned against unnecessary travel during the afternoon storm, encouraging residents to push plans to Sunday when the snow will have entirely left the state.

The predicted temperatures for Sunday remain in the low 40s, but travel should be safer due to clear skies and drier driving conditions.

"If you can, adjust your travel plans to a different day or time," Pearce said. "That would be highly encouraged — avoid any kind of going out if you don't need to on Saturday."

NWS Meteorologist urges travelers to adjust plans for Saturday's winter storm

Marymount College today is the home of the Kansas Highway Patrol's training center, but the towering building once stood as a college for women, started by the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

The college opened in 1922 with support from the City of Salina and the town's Catholic community. According to the Smoky Hill Museum, the city donated 16 acres of land and $50,000 in support.

With the $50,000 donation from Salina, the Sisters of Saint Joseph agreed to cover the staggering $100,000 cost of the institution, almost $2 million in today's cash.

According to the Smoky Hill Museum, the four-year liberal arts school initially encountered some challenges during construction, with rising costs jeopardizing the school's future.

This would cause the Sisters of Saint Joseph to contact Pope Benedict XV for help, who helped fund the rest of the construction cost.

Smoky Hill Museum quoted Patricia Ackerman's book "Marymount College of Kansas: A History."

"One year before the United States granted women the right to vote, the Sisters of St. Joseph broke ground on the construction of the first all women's college in Kansas," Ackerman stated. "Dubbed the 'Million-Dollar College,' the hilltop campus overlooking the Smoky Hill River finally opened its doors in 1922."

The memorial building at the Catholic University in Washington D.C. inspired the large college and eventually opened its doors to male and female students.

Over the next six decades, the school grew to include five buildings, three dormitories and more than 650 students enrolled. The school's programs of the liberal arts, including art, theatre, and athletics, gained notoriety around the globe.

Marymount College hosted world leaders, including John F. Kennedy, before the school closed its academic doors in 1989 for financial reasons.

Three years after the school closed, Salina architect Donnie Marrs purchased the original administration building from the Salina Diocese in 1992 and began renovating.

Marrs began transforming old college lecture halls into large, modern condominiums while continuing the legacy of the historic college.

Kansas Highway Patrol also uses buildings on the campus as its state-wide dispatch center and training center, continuing to educate young minds on the historic campus grounds.

SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Thursday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Chrysler Town &amp; Country driven by Vicki Lynne&nbsp;Doyle, 61, Ellis, was westbound on Interstate 70 five miles east of the Interstate 135 interchange.

The van rear-ended a 2024 Buick Enclave driven by Sharon&nbsp;Hendricks, 73, Bird City, who had slowed for upcoming road construction.

EMS transported&nbsp;Doyle to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp;Hendricks was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

L. Frank Baum’s classic novel comes to life in&nbsp;The Wizard of Oz. This faithful adaptation by the Royal Shakespeare Company features all the most beloved songs and moments from the 1939 classic film, brought to life onstage. Young Dorothy Gale is swept away by a tornado from her Kansas farm to the magical land of Oz. There, she encounters a host of whimsical characters: good witches, bad witches, animals that talk, scarecrows that walk, and things magical to behold. 

To find her way home, she must journey along the Yellow Brick Road to see the mysterious and all-powerful Wizard in Emerald City. Along the way, she makes new friends, but must also brave many dangers, including the Wicked Witch of the West, who will stop at nothing to get her hands on Dorothy’s magical ruby slippers. To make it home safely, Dorothy must learn an important lesson: there’s no place like home.

🎙  'The Wizard of Oz' comes back to Theatre Salina

By NATE KING Salina Post When you are cooking today and tomorrow, consider saving all your glass and plastic containers for the Salina Area Emergency Aid Food Bank.&nbsp; “We are in need of cottage cheese, Cool Whip, and Sour Cream containers and any small jars that you have,” said April Rickman, board member at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank.

All containers must be washed before donating them to the food bank.

The containers are used to package flour, sugar, and other items for the food bank clients.

The Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank is located at&nbsp;255 S. Chicago Street in Salina.

Save your plastic, Salina Food Bank seeks container donations

Saline County Jail Activity, Nov. 23

More than 500 volunteers and church members from The Ark Church in Salina shared the love on Saturday by giving out Thanksgiving groceries to 600 families.&nbsp;

The Sixth Annual Ark Salina Thanksgiving Grocery Giveaway brought a total of 600&nbsp;cars—some arriving as early as 5 a.m. to&nbsp;the Dean Evans Stadium,&nbsp;851 Markley Road,&nbsp;in Salina.&nbsp;

As cars entered the parking lot that morning, The Ark Lead Pastor and Salina native, John Huseman, began to pray with volunteers.

"It's the chance for us to bless the community. It's a chance for us to reach out and help people that might be hurting or might be going through a tough time," Huseman said. "We'd love to just love this city. There's a big sign in our auditorium that says love our city, and this is one of the ways that we do that."

"It is more than just food. We're adding hope, we're adding care — not just to people in this line, but to each other as well. Let's be joyous. Let's be excited. Let's be thankful," Huseman said to volunteers before he led them in prayer.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-price-outlook/summary-findings/">According to the USDA food prices grew by 6.3% in 2023</a>—higher than average, but not as bad as the more than 11% increase we saw last year. People across the country, and in Saline County, are struggling to put a holiday meal on the table for their loved ones and families.&nbsp;

Vehicles pulled out of the&nbsp;parking lot with more than $100 in groceries, including frozen chicken nuggets, bread, a bag of Idaho potatoes, frozen hamburger, peanut butter and jelly, corn, frozen pizzas, and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In total roughly the Ark church gave out $66,000 worth of groceries.&nbsp;

Line leaders guided and organized the cars into a grid in the parking lot. Once the food service teams were ready to place food in the vehicles, column after column of vehicles made their way through a tunnel of people waving and sharing messages of blessings and kindness.&nbsp;

"We hear testimonies all the time. It's like they [volunteers] get more out of it than any other thing that they do all year," Huseman said. "So they feel value, they feel purpose, it's able to extend the love of God so they love it."

Back in 2017 the giveaway was held at Ace Hardware in Salina. With only 100 volunteers, the group helped merely half of the number of families they helped this year. Thanks to community interest and the need for more helpers during the holidays, the volunteer team continues to grow year after year.&nbsp;

Don Petty said he learned about the giveaway from a friend.

"This is our third year coming. Makes me and my family eat better that's for sure," Petty said. "There's people out there that really care about the rest of us, And yeah, it makes me feel real good, warm."

Spreading blessings: Salina church gives Thanksgiving groceries to 600 families

Thanksgiving may be a time for Americans to come together, but opinion is divided over what’s on the crowded dinner table. We mostly agree on the deliciousness of pumpkin pie, say, but are split over the eternal turkey question of dark meat versus white meat.

And don’t even ask if marshmallows belong on sweet potatoes — it could cause a ruckus.

About 3 in 10 U.S. adults (32%) who will celebrate Thanksgiving this year say turkey is their favorite dish in the holiday feast, according to a new poll from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnorc.org/?doing_wp_cron=1700580566.2339079380035400390625" target="_blank">The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research</a>.

Stuffing or dressing (19%) and mashed potatoes (6%) come in second and third.

“Thanksgiving — it’s about turkey,” said Ralph Caya, 71, from Pensacola, Florida, who participated in the survey.

On the other hand, Vaidehi Upadhyaya, a 27-year-old pharmacist in Glen Rock, New Jersey, is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vegetarian-vegan-thanksgiving-tips-19dc237fa13270d9c8fb87b4e9991d8e" target="_blank">a lifelong vegetarian.</a>&nbsp;It’s all about the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/thanksgiving-side-dish-recipes-d188ab4d289ac8d8f66804623d194838" target="_blank">side dishes</a>&nbsp;for her.

Although turkey is tops across U.S. regions and ages, there’s a slight generational divide. Americans 45 or older are especially likely to call turkey the best thing on the Thanksgiving table (39%), while younger adults who agree come in at 24%.

Once the turkey is carved, about 4 in 10 celebrators (43%) prefer white meat over dark (28%), and about one in five (21%) have no preference. Older people are more likely than those under 45 to prefer dark meat (31% vs. 24%).

About 1 in 10 adults under 45 don’t like the big bird at all.

“I have to go with the white meat,” says Carlos Stallworth, 58, of Los Angeles, who also thinks ahead to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-holidays-thanksgiving-515fbe5b4f4ae2cf631891f44cb4d47c" target="_blank">leftovers</a>. “You’re not going to get a great slice of dark meat to go on a sandwich. But with the white meat, you get that.”

As for the least favorite dishes on the Thanksgiving table, look no further than cranberries. About 2 in 10 celebrators say cranberries or cranberry sauce wouldn’t be missed. (For the record, KRC Research&nbsp;<a href="https://news.oceanspray.com/2017-09-30-cranberry-sauce-stats" target="_blank">reports 80 million pounds</a>&nbsp;of cranberries are eaten during Thanksgiving week.)

Caya says cranberries on the table are “important,” but Upadhyaya is “pretty indifferent,” adding: “I’ll eat it if it’s there but it’s like not exciting by any means.”

Stallworth, who has taken a few culinary courses, appreciates what cranberries do on the big day: “You definitely want a clash with the salty and the gaminess of the meat. So to me, cranberry is a must.”

Thanksgiving celebrators are generally divided on whether it’s better to have cranberry sauce from a can or homemade. About one-quarter (24%) say the canned sauce is preferable, while 22% want it made from scratch. About one-third (35%) just don’t like cranberry sauce, with those under 45 being more likely than older adults to dislike it.

According the poll, pumpkin pie is the safe bet if you want to make the average guest happy. One-third of U.S. adults who will celebrate Thanksgiving say that’s their preferred dessert.

Pecan pie got 17%, apple pie was right behind with 15% and sweet potato pie was at 12%. Chocolate pie and cherry or berry pie were in the single digits.

Caya, in Florida, bypasses the pumpkin to go with a regional delicacy. “Being this close to Georgia, I’ve got to go with pecan,” he says.

One of the holiday’s biggest divides is whether marshmallows belong on sweet potato dishes. About one-third (32%) say they prefer that whoever is cooking nix the marshmallows, while 26% want them added. Another one-quarter don’t like sweet potato dishes at all, and 16% have no preference.

There are some regional differences over marshmallows, according to the data. Northeasterners (42%) are more likely than Midwesterners (29%) or Southerners (29%) to say no to them.

Upadhyaya has eaten sweet potatoes both ways and says there’s not much difference: “I feel like it really doesn’t affect the taste that much because the dish is already sweet enough without the marshmallows. It’s good both ways.”

Lauren Feldman, 39, of Indianapolis, suggests another key ingredient for a successful meal. Every year, she goes home and her mom makes turkey, lots of sides, cranberry sauce from scratch, and a pumpkin pie with homemade crust.

That human touch — mom’s touch, actually — makes all the difference, says Feldman: “I think if those things were store-bought, I probably wouldn’t like them as much.”

Among those celebrating Thanksgiving, women (34%) are more likely than men (19%) to say they will do all or most of the cooking. So to me, cranberry is a must.”Thanksgiving celebrators are generally divided on whether it’s better to have cranberry sauce from a can or homemade. Chocolate pie and cherry or berry pie were in the single digits.Caya, in Florida, bypasses the pumpkin to go with a regional delicacy. “Being this close to Georgia, I’ve got to go with pecan,” he says.<h2>OH, AND ABOUT THE SWEET POTATOES...</h2>One of the holiday’s biggest divides is whether marshmallows belong on sweet potato dishes. About one-third (32%) say they prefer that whoever is cooking nix the marshmallows, while 26% want them added. Another one-quarter don’t like sweet potato dishes at all, and 16% have no preference.There are some regional differences over marshmallows, according to the data. TOPEKA —&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for&nbsp;the&nbsp;Saline County Rural Water District&nbsp;#2&nbsp;public water supply system located in&nbsp;Saline&nbsp;County.&nbsp;The advisory was&nbsp;issued&nbsp;because&nbsp;of&nbsp;a&nbsp;water line break, resulting in a&nbsp;loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Laboratory testing samples collected from Saline Co. Rural Water District #2&nbsp;indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.  &nbsp;&nbsp;

City Of Salina preparing for wintry mix

TOPEKA — State regulators approved a utility rate change that will decrease electric rates for Kansas City customers and push up prices for other customers in the state after a long tug of war between proposed corporation price hikes and commission staff estimates over fair prices.

During a Tuesday meeting, the three-member Kansas Corporation Commission voted to approve a unanimous settlement agreement with Evergy, the state’s largest utility company.

“The order seeks to balance the financial interests of averaging with the protection of the substantial interests of Kansas energy ratepayers,” said Commissioner Dwight Keen. “In my opinion, the order achieves this balancing goal and is quite meritorious in that regard.”

The rate change, which will be implemented in December’s billing cycle, will result in&nbsp;Evergy collecting around $41 million more in revenue from ratepayers.

Evergy customers in the&nbsp;Kansas Central territory, such as Topeka, Manhattan and Wichita, will have a 4.05% rate increase, paying approximately $4.64 more per month in electric rates. Customers on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro will see a 4.75% decrease, or about $6.07 per month.

In the central region, Evergy serves about 736,000 customers. In the Kansas metro area, the utility serves approximately 273,000 customers.&nbsp;The new rates will mean the central area will pay $74 million more while the metro area pays $32.9 million less.

The agreement follows months of debate over what constitutes a fair electric rate increase. The utility’s original ask was much higher —&nbsp;Evergy officials first proposed a $218 million rate hike, with a&nbsp;1.95% rate increase for the Kansas City, Kansas, region and a request to raise monthly bills by 9.7% in the Kansas region.

Evergy’s request would have increased bills by $14.24 for Kansas Central customers. Kansas City-area customers would have seen bills increase by $3.47.

KCC staff told Evergy&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/briefs/evergys-proposed-rate-increases-are-too-high-kansas-regulators-announce/">the increase was “unjustified,”</a>&nbsp;and recommended only a 1.66% increase for Kansas Central and a 7.32% drop for the Kansas City metro in August. In<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/10/04/evergy-regulators-near-deal-on-kansas-electric-rates/">&nbsp;late September</a>, the parties reached the current agreement.

“I think all of us have been living, eating and breathing this for so long that I don’t have questions,” said Commissioner Annie Kuether.

The change is the first since Evergy was formed from the merger of Kansas City Power &amp; Light and Westar in 2018. As a condition of the merger, the company has been under a rate moratorium, unable to raise rates on its approximately 1.6 million electric customers in Kansas and Missouri.

During merger talks in 2018, utility officials disputed concerns raised by consumer watchdogs about how the utility would try to raise rates as soon as the five-year moratorium expired. Central Kansas electric bills will increase following approval of Evergy rate hike

You may have learned from parents or grandparents, or even read in old recipes, to rinse meat before cooking. But Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said rinsing meat is an outdated practice that can create food safety problems.

“This can lead to foodborne illness,” Blakeslee said. “Rinsing meat at home can lead to cross contamination of clean surfaces or ready-to-eat foods, as examples.” Research has shown that rinsing raw meat led to 26% frequency and for poultry 20% frequency of contaminating ready-to-eat foods.&nbsp;

Any meat bought from the store is already rinsed during processing, she said, so it can be immediately prepped and cooked without any rinsing step at home.

To be safe at home, other food safety practices are important, according to Blakeslee. Before handling any food, and especially after handling raw meats, washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds is a vital step in safe food preparation.

“Be sure equipment and surfaces are clean before and after preparation,” Blakeslee said. “Never reuse any raw meat and poultry packaging materials, such as foam meat trays or plastic wraps.”

Blakeslee also said that cooking food to the correct internal temperature is one of the most important factors in ensuring your food is safe. Cooking to these temperatures kills any harmful bacteria still left on the food. The minimum recommended temperatures are:

145 degrees Fahrenheit for all beef, pork, lamb and veal steaks, roasts and chops 145 F for fish and seafood 160 F for ground meat 165 F for all forms of poultry.

Blakeslee added a meat’s “doneness” can never be judged by its color or appearance.

“For example, cooked ground beef may look pink in the middle, but when checked with a thermometer it may be at or above the safe temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit,” she said.

Blakeslee recommends using a food thermometer to check a product’s internal temperature and ensure safe food.

But Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said rinsing meat is an outdated practice that can create food safety problems.“This can lead to foodborne illness,” Blakeslee said. “Rinsing meat at home can lead to cross contamination of clean surfaces or ready-to-eat foods, as examples.” Research has shown that rinsing raw meat led to 26% frequency and for poultry 20% frequency of contaminating ready-to-eat foods.&nbsp;Any meat bought from the store is already rinsed during processing, she said, so it can be immediately prepped and cooked without any rinsing step at home.To be safe at home, other food safety practices are important, according to Blakeslee. KSRE: How to safely prepare and cook meats for the holidays

Kansas Wesleyan announced Tuesday that it will open Yotee’s, the university’s on-campus spirit store, for additional hours during the holiday season. From Nov. 28-Dec. 22, the store will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

To help celebrate the new hours, customers can take 20% off all regularly priced items and 10% off sale items.

“We always say that it’s a great time to be a Coyote, and part of that is making sure that our supporters can get great Coyote gear,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “We hope to see everyone on campus taking advantage of this great deal to get outfitted for winter – or to pick up those late holiday gifts!”

KWU: Yotee’s store to open additional hours
