A Salina businessman who owns a local construction company, deceived two victims to send money by promising to complete renovations to their home, which never even started.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) the first incident occurred back in August, where the victim got in contact with Warren Huffman (47) who is the proprietor <a href="https://www.bbb.org/us/ks/salina/profile/construction/wfo-construction-0714-300204256">WFO Construction</a>&nbsp;to renovate their home. A check of $4,750 was given to Huffman that same month, but no construction to the home was ever started since then.

The victim then called SPD on Christmas Eve and reported the issue. Officers then came in contact with Huffman, but he denied the accusation.

However, Huffman was arrested and booked into the Saline County Jail for probable cause and requested charge of Theft by Deception.

Huffman was then released on bond the following day.

SPD then received a report from a separate individual on December 26, who indicated Huffman had committed the same crime back on June.

This time, the victim sent a check of $5,786 for renovation of their home.

Huffman was not re-arrested, but SPD referred this incident to the Saline County District Court, since he already has a pending court case regarding the first report.

Salina businessman deceives two victims in sending over $4,000 for home renovations that never even started

Salina PD are currently investigating incidents where two vehicles were stolen over the Christmas holiday.

According to the Salina Police Department the first one was stolen on Christmas Day at around 10:00 am in the 1400 block of Teakwood.

The vehicle was a gray 2011 Hyundai Sonata,&nbsp;KS tag: 2454ALC.

The owner stated the keys were not inside when the vehicle was stolen

The second vehicle was stolen on Saturday in the&nbsp;1300 block of Winona at around 7:00 pm. The report was made the following day at 9:00 am.

Stolen was a white 2017 Kia Sportage, KS tag:&nbsp;7468ACE

The victim did not leave the keys inside the vehicle as well.

Saline County Jail Bookings, December 29

Two reported crashes happened in Salina due Sunday's winter storm.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, the first one happened at 12:30 pm on I-70 and Ohio, where a vehicle&nbsp;encountered a slick spot and struck a guardrail near the Ohio Street exit.

The second occurred just about 10 minutes later on I-70 west of 9th Street, when the vehicle left the road due to strong winds.

There were no reported injuries to any of the occupants involved in the crashes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansans are invited to start the New Year outdoors as Kansas State Parks participate in the nationwide First Day Hikes program on New Year’s Day.

First Day Hikes is a national initiative sponsored by America’s State Parks, designed to encourage individuals and families to welcome the New Year with a healthy, outdoor activity. The program offers guided and self-guided hikes in state parks across the country, giving participants an opportunity to exercise, enjoy nature, and connect with friends and family.

Kansas State Parks will host multiple First Day Hike events at parks throughout the state. Park staff encourage participants to come prepared for winter conditions. Recommended items include water, snacks, weather-appropriate clothing such as hats, gloves and heavy coats, sturdy hiking shoes, binoculars, a hiking stick, and a camera.

UPDATE: Heavy snow ends in Salina, pockets of light snow expected throughout central Kansas

Be aware, take precaution on the roads and prepare, as a fast band of snow has worked its way quickly through Salina and central Kansas.&nbsp;

According to the US National Weather Service, snow will combine with strong winds to reduced visibility to less than a mile at times. Those traveling along I-70 should expect rapid reductions in visibility as they head west.

Those traveling between Wichita and Salina need to be prepared for rapidly deteriorating conditions along I-135 and surrounding roadways. Slick spots on elevated surfaces and visibility under 1/2 mile are anticipated.

The National Weather Service expects the snow to continue until 3:00 pm on Sunday.&nbsp;

Moreover, a cold front will move across the area bringing strong northwest winds. Wind gusts in the 45 to 55 mph range will be common across the region.

Be sure to secure any loose outdoor items.

Salina has been issued to be under a wind advisory until 6:00 pm on Sunday.

SPD implements Emergency Accident Reporting Plan

The Salina Police Department has announced that the Emergency Accident Reporting Plan has been implemented due to severe weather and/or hazardous driving conditions, as the number of motor vehicle accidents exceeds the Department’s ability to respond in a timely manner.

Any non-hit and run, non-personal injury motor vehicle accident that does not require towing, and does not involve alcohol or drugs.

 Exchange personal information with the other driver(s) involved or property owner. 

Complete an Emergency Accident Reporting Plan accident report form as completely as possible and mail or deliver the completed report to the Salina Police Department within 48 hours.

Since retiring in December 2024 from a trailblazing and highly successful 45-year career as a surgeon and educator with KU School of Medicine-Wichita, <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/9b87a146-036c-4e5a-b439-cc7d992fcc27">Marilee McBoyle-Wiesner</a>, M.D., is paying tribute to two of her most stalwart advocates and making sure their legacy, and hers to some extent, carries forward to future surgeons.

Earlier this year, McBoyle-Wiesner established a $25,000 endowed fund in her parents’ names. The Vincent and Laurel McBoyle KU Surgery Residency Skills Lab Award will provide an annual payout of $1,000 to support a surgery resident who has made educational contributions to the lab.

An example would be a resident creating a hands-on lab session for certain procedures, McBoyle-Wiesner said, like escharotomies, which are small surgical incisions made through tough, burnt skin to relieve dangerous pressure and help restore blood flow for a burn trauma patient.

McBoyle-Wiesner was instrumental in setting up the lab, located on the third floor of Ascension Via Christi St. Francis hospital, more than a decade ago. In the accredited lab, residents can practice skills and procedures — such as suturing challenging wounds, performing colonoscopies and learning fundamentals of laparoscopic and robotics-assisted surgeries — through simulations outside of the operating room. Medical students are also introduced to the lab to prepare for their surgical clerkship.

To acknowledge her impact in teaching surgical skills and her service as the lab’s medical director, the lab was renamed in her honor before she retired.

McBoyle-Wiesner described establishing the fund as “a heart-touching way to pay tribute to (my parents) who had made a lasting impression and impact in my life, and to provide support for something that I had helped establish” within the KUSM-Wichita Surgical residency program.

“I’ve felt for a long time that I’ve been blessed beyond measure, and I was able to stand on my parents’ shoulders because they did so many things the right way and provided me with untold opportunities,” McBoyle-Wiesner said.

“It’s so exciting that two things important to me have come together.”

“As a farmer, my father was very innovative in new ways of farming and methods to improve soil conservation; my mother, as an elementary school teacher, was the epitome of establishing learning goals with encouragement,” McBoyle-Wiesner wrote in a letter announcing the fund to the KUSM-Wichita Department of Surgery colleagues.

“Innovation, establishing learning goals and encouragement — it just seemed like those are three important pillars in our skills lab as well,” she said in an interview.

McBoyle-Wiesner, the oldest of three daughters, grew up on the family farm near Abilene, Kansas, during the 1950s and ’60s. It was a time and place where young girls didn’t get the same kind of confidence and inspiration that Vincent and Laurel McBoyle provided.

McBoyle-Wiesner, who often tagged along with her dad to farm stores and livestock auctions, remembers overhearing her dad’s response to other farmers who remarked it was too bad he didn’t have any sons.

He told them, “I wouldn’t trade my daughters for anyone else’s sons.”

“And I remember my mother always telling me I could be anything I wanted to be,” she said, particularly when she told her mom she wanted to be a doctor after receiving care from a female surgeon and reading about Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to graduate from a U.S. medical college.

Words and actions like that are what led McBoyle-Wiesner to break barriers as the first woman surgical resident at KUSM-Wichita in 1977 and the first board-certified female surgeon in Kansas.

McBoyle-Wiesner also became a nationally recognized surgery educator.

“It was a genetic predisposition since her mother was a teacher,” said Alex Ammar, M.D., the recently retired chair of KUSM-Wichita’s surgery department.

“Their strong Christian faith in the Lord has also been a tremendous influence in my life,” McBoyle-Wiesner said. Her parents had been high school sweethearts and were married for nearly 53 years when her dad died in November 2000. 

Investing for the future McBoyle-Wiesner established the endowed fund through a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), which can be a tax-savvy way for donors to support KU Endowment.

“I’m 73, so I needed to start taking money out of some of my retirement plans,” McBoyle-Wiesner said, referring to IRS guidelines on some types of individual retirement accounts that are triggered at age 70.5.

“I’ve been putting in money for a long time, and this was something that I could do that would be lasting.”

A QCD is made directly from a qualifying IRA, usually a traditional IRA, to a qualifying organization, such as a nonprofit educational institution or hospital. Because the QCD is made directly to the receiving organization, the donor avoids income tax on the gift, plus all or part of the QCD can be used to satisfy IRS required minimum distributions.

Namesake of surgical skills lab sets up fund to honor parents, provide lasting support

Salina Regional Health Center has achieved reaccreditation through the Accreditation Commision for Health Care (ACHC) Acute Care Hospital Program.

Accreditation is a process through which health care organizations demonstrate compliance with national standards. Accreditation through the ACHC reflects an organization’s dedication and commitment to meeting standards that facilitate a higher level of performance and patient care.

The ACHC is a nonprofit organization that has stood as a symbol of quality and excellence since 1986. The ACHC is certified and has Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services deeming authority for Acute Care Hospitals, Critical Access Hospitals, Ambulatory Surgery Centers and Clinical Laboratories.

MITCHELL COUNTY—Law enforcement have a kidnapping suspect in custody after a high-speed chase in north central Kansas.

On Friday, the Mitchell County Sheriff's office asked the public to be on the lookout for a black 2014 Mustang with a silver grille. "Proceed with caution, do not approach and contact law enforcement immediately."

The car and driver were involved in a kidnapping incident on US Highway 24 west of Beloit in Mitchell County, according to the sheriff's office. The victim escaped with injuries and was hospitalized with suspected serious injuries. 

The suspect and stolen Mustang left the scene and were later pursued in Osborne County.&nbsp;The suspect is believed to have been possibly involved in an incident in Jewell County prior to the Mitchell County incident.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Osborne county authorities took the suspect into custody.&nbsp; The name of the suspect and possible charges have not been released.

The Salina Regional Health Foundation’s Community Health Investment Program&nbsp; (CHIP) awarded 17 grants in 2025 totaling $1,364,192. 

Funding for CHIP primarily comes from Salina&nbsp; Regional Health Center as part of its community benefit efforts. Since the inception of CHIP in 1995, more than $18.15 million in grants have been awarded to regional community organizations.&nbsp;

Funding priorities for CHIP primarily focus on children’s health, childhood obesity, mental&nbsp; health, substance abuse, aging populations, heart disease and stroke. 

Applications for CHIP are accepted&nbsp; three times a year. Application deadlines for 2026 are January 9, April 17 and August 14.

• $50,000 to Blessed Hope Family to help increase programming for services aimed at supporting foster and adoptive families.

• $45,000 to School Marathon Foundation to provide programming at area grade schools for students to complete a marathon (26.2 miles) during before-and-after school activities.&nbsp;

• $37,500 to Salina Area United Way Early Childcare Initiative Fund, which helps supplement employee wages at local non-profit childcare centers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

• $28,346 to Child Advocacy and Parenting Services Education Program, which supports programming for Salina area school children on personal safety, sexual abuse prevention and bullying prevention.&nbsp;&nbsp;

• $26,000 to Resilience Clubhouse to provide matching funds for the purchase of commercial grade kitchen equipment used as part of the new Salina Mental Health Program.&nbsp;

 </figure>Salina Regional Health FoundationThe Salina Regional Health Foundation’s Community Health Investment Program&nbsp; (CHIP) awarded 17 grants in 2025 totaling $1,364,192. Funding for CHIP primarily comes from Salina&nbsp; Regional Health Center as part of its community benefit efforts. Since the inception of CHIP in 1995, more than $18.15 million in grants have been awarded to regional community organizations.&nbsp;Funding priorities for CHIP primarily focus on children’s health, childhood obesity, mental&nbsp; health, substance abuse, aging populations, heart disease and stroke. Applications for CHIP are accepted&nbsp; three times a year. Application deadlines for 2026 are January 9, April 17 and August 14. The Temple, a historic landmark located in the heart of downtown Salina, is proud to announce that its&nbsp;Innovation Kitchen – More Than a Kitchen&nbsp;project, has been selected for funding through the&nbsp;Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Equipment-Only Grant&nbsp;and the&nbsp;Greater Salina Community Foundation Capacity Building Grant.

One of The Temple’s most significant assets is its&nbsp;1,500-square-foot commercial kitchen, which holds tremendous potential for the region. With the growing demand for culinary innovation and local food production, The Temple is transforming this space into The Innovation Kitchen –&nbsp;more than a kitchen for hire&nbsp;— a community-focused resource designed to serve local farmers, food entrepreneurs, culinary professionals, and educational events.

Funding from these grants will allow The Temple to purchase all new commercial kitchen appliances, install a new epoxy floor, and complete interior painting. These upgrades will significantly improve both the functionality and safety of the kitchen, elevating it into a modern, professional facility that supports economic development and culinary growth throughout Salina and central Kansas.

“The Innovation Kitchen will provide access to high-quality kitchen facilities for small businesses and local producers who otherwise may not have the resources to grow,” said Mary Landes, Executive Director of The Temple. “This investment strengthens our local food system and creates new opportunities for collaboration, education, and entrepreneurship.”

In addition to the grant-funded improvements, The Temple is seeking&nbsp;additional donations&nbsp;to support further upgrades, including&nbsp;lighting and electrical improvements, to fully realize the kitchen’s potential.

Salina Police are informing the public and seeking tips for suspect(s) who committed three burglaries.

According to the Salina Police Department,&nbsp;On Friday, December 19 business burglaries were reported at The Boy Scouts of America (644 S. Ohio) and All Eyes on You Salon (905 E. Prescott). 

Forced entry was gained into both buildings. 

Taken from the Boy Scouts of America were numerous food items, cash, keys, plastic cups and a Boy Scout medal. Total damage and loss were valued at over $3000.

Taken from All Eyes on You Salon were multiple gift cards, cash, an HP laptop, and 24 necklace chains with connectors. Total damage and loss were valued at over $4000.

Also reported that same day was a residential burglary which occurred just a couple of blocks down from the salon in central Salina. 

The suspect(s) entered an attached garage and stole a black Kastking tacklebox, a silver lighter, and a wallet. Total loss was valued at over $100. 

Recovered from the scene was a Boy Scout medal and several food items which had been stolen from the Boy Scouts of America.

Surveillance video from the area showed the suspect (see above).
