Salina Police Department officers are investigating an aggravated assault with a weapon and an aggravated burglary that occurred Thursday afternoon in Salina at an apartment complex in the 2000 block of Hageman Avenue

According to SPD Capt. Mike Miller, officers were dispatched to the location around 12:05 p.m. after a female resident reported that a male suspect kicked in the front door and entered the residence while brandishing a handgun.

The suspect was looking for another male resident who was not present at the time. Authorities believe the confrontation was related to a property issue, though specific details about the dispute remain unclear.

According to Capt. Miller the report is not yet complete.

A second male, who was inside the apartment at the time, helped de-escalate the situation along with the female resident. Eventually, they persuaded the suspect to leave without further incident.

SPD say the suspect is known to the individuals involved and that officers are working to locate him.

The female resident appeared visibly shaken and was unable to provide full details about what was said during the encounter. No injuries were reported.

Authorities are continuing their investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Salina Police Department at (785) 826-7210.

By SALINA POST Saline County Sheriff's Deputies and law enforcement in Wichita are searching for a woman facing felony drug charges in Salina after she walked away from a court-ordered assessment center and treatment facility in Wichita before entering.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, 42-year-old Amanda Vinardi was arrested in Wichita on Jan. 9 on a Saline County District Court warrant connected to a case investigated by the Salina Police Department. She was transported to Saline County Jail before being court-ordered to a facility in Wichita.&nbsp;

Vinardi was facing multiple charges, including:

Possession of methamphetamine Possession of marijuana Possession of drug paraphernalia Aggravated endangering a child

Vinardi is now facing an additional charge of escape from custody. A warrant has been issued for her arrest, and Wichita Police Officers and Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office have been notified.

According to Saline County Sheriff's Office Capt. Fruits, Vinardi was transported to Miracles Inc. facility in Wichita, not Mirror as had been originally reported by Salina Post.

Capt. Fruits said that Vinardi was transported from the Saline County Jail to a treatment facility in Wichita on February 19 under a court order. On March 4, she failed to attend a required class, and staff later determined she had walked away from the facility.

 Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to contact the Saline County Sheriff's Office at (785) 826-6500.

CORRECTION: Woman facing felony charges walks away from Wichita treatment center

On Monday, March 10, 2025, Salina Police Department Officers responded to Pack Rat Smokes, 695 S. Broadway, Salina, Kansas, in reference to a business burglary.

Surveillance video from the business showed, during the overnight hours, two subjects breaking out the glass door and making entry into the business. It appears both subjects are wearing hooded sweatshirts and sweatpants. One of the subjects is wearing a mask.

The suspects then steal over $2,000 worth of tobacco products prior to leaving the business. Damage was valued at $800.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a Wind Advisory and a Red Flag Warning for several counties in central and south-central Kansas due to hazardous weather conditions expected throughout Friday.

The Wind Advisory, in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., warns of southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. The affected counties include Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Reno, Harvey, Kingman, and Harper. The following towns are within the advisory area:

Ellsworth, McPherson, Newton, Wilson, Marion, Peabody, Anthony, Salina, Kingman, Harper, Attica, Hillsboro, Hutchinson, Sterling, Great Bend, and Lyons.

The NWS cautions that the strong winds could blow around unsecured objects, down tree limbs, and cause scattered power outages. High-profile vehicles, such as trucks and RVs, may experience difficult driving conditions.

Simultaneously, a Red Flag Warning has been issued for the same time frame, covering an expanded area that includes Russell and Lincoln counties in addition to those under the wind advisory. The warning signifies extreme grassland fire danger, with low humidity levels dropping to 20% combined with strong winds. These conditions make any outdoor burning highly dangerous, as fires can spread rapidly and become difficult to contain.

Counties included in the Red Flag Warning are Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Reno, Harvey, Kingman, and Harper. Towns within the warning area include:

According to Saline County residents are urged to take precautions:

⦁ Check past burns to ensure no smoldering embers remain

⦁ Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks from dragging metal

⦁ Do not discard cigarettes out of vehicle windows

⦁ A single spark can start a wildfire. Stay alert and help prevent fires.

Vanessa Pearce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wichita, explained that Salina’s fire risk level was upgraded from "very high" to "extreme" due to a combination of factors, including dry conditions, intensifying strong winds, and low humidity.

<a href="https://www.weather.gov/ict/Generic_State_County_GFDI">The Grassland Fire Danger Index</a> assesses wildfire risk by evaluating factors such as dry vegetation, wind speed, humidity, and temperature to classify areas into different wildfire severity levels. Temperatures are expected to reach 80 degrees today, with Friday’s highs in the lower 70s.&nbsp;

“We’ll see sustained winds of 25 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 45 to 50 miles per hour. The strongest winds will likely peak around the noon hour and continue through the afternoon," Pearce said. "Later in the day, we’ll have a cold front moving in from the northwest, which will bring even drier air and a shift in wind direction.”

Pearce emphasized fire prevention, advising farmers, ranchers, and travelers to avoid activities that could cause sparks, such as welding near dry grass or dragging chains.

Winds will shift with the passing cold front in the evening, around 6-7 p.m., but fire risks will remain throughout the day due to dry conditions and high winds.

UPDATED: NWS upgrades Salina to 'extreme' fire danger, Red Flag Warning issued

After more than a decade of innovation labs that have helped feed the world and improve global food systems in partnership with the U.S. federal government, Kansas State University will suspend the operation of its two current Feed the Future Innovation Labs on April 12.

Due to the recent federal transition, the U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service issued stop-work orders in late January on various grant funded projects, which included Feed the Future Innovation Labs and other international projects at several land-grant universities across the U.S. Under these and other federal orders, related grant-funded research at these universities was paused, including at K-State. 

In late February, many stop-work orders became grant terminations, pausing or suspending various research on crop resilience and other projects. At K-State, students, scholars, post-doctoral fellows and some faculty connected to these projects are transitioning to other projects, and nine positions will be eliminated on April 12.

• Developing wheat and sorghum crop varieties for changing growing conditions, such as drought, and new consumer bases. 

• Protecting local and global food systems — both plant and animal — from pests and diseases.

• Advancing food safety with improved post-harvest food storage practices. 

K-State has proudly hosted many international innovative agricultural research projects, including Feed the Future Innovation Labs. University researchers continue to collaborate with the federal government to provide scientific solutions and outcomes that impact not only Kansas but also communities around the globe.

"While these specific programs are ceasing or pausing, K-State remains committed to advancing and enhancing global food systems and biosecurity and helping Kansas farmers overcome current and future challenges," Minton said.

On social media, the Chapman Police Department told business owners to "please be aware that we have been made aware of an unknown person or persons, passing counterfeit $20 bills within the county."

Police issue alert of counterfeit cash

For Kansas gardeners, St. Patrick’s Day means something much more than donning a favorite green outfit and heading to local celebrations.

Traditionally, the Irish holiday signals the date for planting potatoes.

“Actually, anytime from mid- to late March is fine for potato planting,” said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

“Be sure to buy seed potatoes rather than using those intended for cooking. Seed potatoes are certified disease-free and have plenty of starch to sprout as quickly as soil temperatures allow.”

Domenghini notes that most seed potatoes can be cut into four pieces – “though large potatoes may yield more,” she said. Each seed should weigh between 1 ½ to 2 ounces, and likely have more than one eye.

Each pound of seed potatoes should yield 8 to 10 pieces, according to Domenghini.

“Cut the seed 2 to 3 days before planting so that freshly cut surfaces have a chance to suberize, or toughen, which provides a protective coating,” Domenghini said. “Storing seed in a warm location during suberization will speed the process.”

Domenghini recommends planting each seed piece 1 to 2 inches deep and 8 to 12 inches apart in rows.

“Though it is important to plant potatoes in March, they emerge slowly,” she said. “It is often mid- to late-April before new plants poke their way through the soil. As the potatoes grow, pull soil up to the base of the plants. New potatoes are borne above the planted seed piece and it is important to keep sunlight from hitting the new potatoes.”

Domenghini said exposed potatoes will turn green and produce a poisonous substance called solanine. Keeping the potatoes covered will prevent this.

Set in Kansas, Lucky Duck takes readers through a crime-fiction story filled with sports, 1980s nostalgia, and an unusual canine companion. The novel follows Joel Howard, a recent college graduate and former benchwarmer on his small-town college basketball team. Optimistic about his future, Joel envisions a promising career and a stable relationship—until both slip away. Left working at a mall shoe store and desperate for change, he devises a plan to rob the mall’s bank on Black Friday, 1987.

Garretson, who started his writing career covering high school sports for local newspapers, now brings his love of storytelling to fiction. His debut novel captures the energy of the era, blending suspense with a strong sense of place in Salina, Hutchinson, and rural Kingman.

Salina author debuts crime-fiction novel at Red Fern Booksellers March 26

Salina City Commissioners held a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to conduct virtual interviews with executive search firms to assist in recruiting candidates for the city manager position.

After interviewing multiple firms, commissioners narrowed the decision to four firms. The commission ultimately chose <a href="https://www.governmentpros.com/about-us">Government Professional Solutions (GPS)</a> to lead the search for $21,500.

The City of Salina will work with a consultant from Government Professional Solutions (GPS) Chris Lowe who has extensive experience in city management and law. With over 15 years of city management experience in Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado, he has overseen public utilities, including solid waste, water, wastewater, and electric services. Lowe served as Baldwin City administrator from 2011-2015.

Holding a Juris Doctor from Marquette University, a Master’s in Administrative Management from Bowie State University, and a Bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of Kansas, he is also a licensed attorney in Kansas and Missouri. His background as a former teacher and basketball coach has shaped his leadership approach, emphasizing teamwork and service.

The vacancy follows the resignation of former City Manager Mick Schrage in December, concluding his 19-year tenure with the city.

Deputy City Manager Jacob Wood has since been appointed interim city manager. Wood has served as Salina’s deputy city manager since April 2019 and previously held positions as assistant city manager in Hays and city administrator in Oakley.

On Match Madness, donations to any of the 104 participating charities will be matched up to 50%. The funds raised are directed to each charity’s permanent endowed fund held at the GSCF, ensuring a steady stream of income that eases the pressure of annual fundraising. Additionally, every gift to a nonprofit’s endowed fund will receive a proportional cash match—up to 50%—in the form of a cash grant available immediately for urgent needs. This year, private donors have contributed $300,000 in matching funds.

“This event is a win-win for everyone, and a great example of community collaboration. Donations of all sizes are pooled together to provide long-term support for our charities, and the match given can be used instantly by the charities to meet urgent needs,” said Jessica Martin, Executive Director of the GSCF.

As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, the Greater Salina Community Foundation’s Match Madness giving day has raised $543,541.89 through 2,064 gifts supporting 103 nonprofits. Donations will continue to be accepted until midnight.

Donors can contribute in one of three ways:

	•	In Person:Visit the Salina Fieldhouse, 140 N. 5th Street, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

	•	BE Wealth Half-Court Shot for Charity:Nonprofit representatives will take a half-court shot, with the winner receiving an extra $1,000 for their organization. The competition starts at 5:30 p.m.

	•	Refreshments and Food: Enjoy coffee and treats from Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House throughout the day, along with food truck offerings from Paradise Eats and 805 Taco’s from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. outside the fieldhouse.

In a unique community initiative, all Saline County fifth graders will participate in Match Madness for the third year in a row. Each student receives $10 to donate to the endowed fund of their favorite nonprofit—matched up to 50% by the Foundation. A local teacher emphasized the importance of the experience.

 “We can’t teach this. This is something that the students experience, and in our realm of the day anytime we can let a student have an experience outside of the classroom, it’s a home run!”

Before the event&nbsp;the students are given information about Match Madness, learn how an endowment works, and why it's important to give back to charity.

When the students arrive at the Fieldhouse, they get to visit 10-15 nonprofit booths to learn about the mission of each nonprofit and how it impacts the community. After they are done visiting the booths, each student gets to fill out a donation form and pick which nonprofit their $10 supports.

Each $10 donation is matched up to 50%, meaning their $10 donation could grow to $15.

The best part is that their $10 donation will always be held in that nonprofit's permanent endowed fund, growing while making grants at the same time.

 </figure>	•	Nonprofit Booths: These will be set up from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.In a unique community initiative, all Saline County fifth graders will participate in Match Madness for the third year in a row. Each student receives $10 to donate to the endowed fund of their favorite nonprofit—matched up to 50% by the Foundation. A local teacher emphasized the importance of the experience. “We can’t teach this. This is something that the students experience, and in our realm of the day anytime we can let a student have an experience outside of the classroom, it’s a home run!”Before the event&nbsp;the students are given information about Match Madness, learn how an endowment works, and why it's important to give back to charity.When the students arrive at the Fieldhouse, they get to visit 10-15 nonprofit booths to learn about the mission of each nonprofit and how it impacts the community. 🎙King in the Community — State Rep. Clarke Sanders

The 2024 People’s Choice winner from the Salina Sculpture Tour, 'Going Home' by artist Sondra Johnson, will soon have a permanent home at the Saline County War Memorial in Sunset Park.

Salina city commissioners approved the sculpture’s placement during Monday’s City Commission meeting.

Crystal Hammerschmidt, Arts Services Coordinator, said the installation will help bring public art exposure to neighborhoods that don’t have as many artistic displays. She also noted that the sculpture would be elevated for better visibility.

According to Johnson, Going Home represents the final journey of a fallen American soldier. A date for the sculpture’s establishment has not yet been announced.

Peas, leaf lettuce, spinach, arugula, carrots, beets, radishes, and other cool-season crops are eager to start growing soon. These crops are typically direct-seeded in the garden and require a soil temperature of at least 40°F to germinate. With temperatures rising, that time is fast approaching. In Kansas, gardeners can plant peas and other cool-season crops anytime from early March through April, and the seeds will sprout as soon as the soil reaches the right temperature.

Peas are a joy to grow and even more fun to eat straight from the vine. When selecting pea seeds, it’s important to know what type you’re planting, as varieties differ in vine length and harvesting needs.

Check the details on seed packets carefully—some compact varieties grow just 12 to 15 inches tall, while others can reach 3 to 4 feet. Pea plants have weak stems, and as they grow and develop pods, they tend to flop over. To help support them, plant seeds 2 to 4 inches apart and keep rows about 6 inches apart, allowing plants to lean on each other. This natural support system is easier and more cost-effective than setting up a trellis.

Once peas germinate, it's a good idea to provide some protection. Rabbits and birds love tender pea shoots just as much as gardeners do, and they can quickly devastate young plants. Fencing or netting can help keep these hungry visitors at bay.

Peas mature by early to mid-June unless succession planting is used, in which case the harvest can extend until summer heat ends the growing season.

Snow peas – Valued for their thin, edible pods, these are harvested before the peas fully develop and are commonly used in salads and stir-fries. Recommended varieties include ‘Dwarf Grey Sugar,’ ‘Mammoth Sugar,’ and ‘Snow Green.’.

Sugar snap peas – A favorite among gardeners, these have thick, crunchy pods and can be eaten raw or cooked like green beans. They’re great for snacking right in the garden—kids love them too! Popular varieties include ‘Sugar Ann,’ ‘Sugar Bon,’ and ‘Sugar Snap.’

Once peas reach the ideal picking stage, harvesting can continue daily for several days or even weeks with successive plantings. Peas are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days if cooled immediately. For the best quality, freeze or can them within hours of picking.
