OCCK Transportation, through Salina CityGo, is continuing the successful “Get On &amp; Go” program for Salina area kids ages 7-18 for the summer of 2025.&nbsp;

Youth ages 7-18 will be able to purchase a “Get On &amp; Go” Summer Youth Bus Pass for $10.&nbsp; The pass will be good for unlimited rides on Salina CityGo from June 1 to August 31.&nbsp; Youth must show the drivers their “Get On &amp; Go” pass when they board the buses.&nbsp;

Riding the bus gives kids the freedom to get around in the summer.&nbsp; The “Get On &amp; Go” Summer Youth Bus Pass is a great way for kids to get to summer activities, summer lunches, community centers, parks, the library, shopping and more.&nbsp;

“This program helps families stretch their budgets while giving kids the independence to safely get where they need to go all summer long,” said Michelle Coats, Mobility Manager for North Central Kanas. “It’s about more than just transportation—it’s about connecting kids to the community and encouraging them to explore and grow.”

The Summer Youth Bus Pass is available for purchase online on May 15, 2025, at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.salinacitygo.com/">www.salinacitygo.com</a>&nbsp;and Buy A Pass, with options for pick up.&nbsp; They will also be available at OCCK Transportation, 340 N. Santa Fe starting May 15, 2025.&nbsp;

The Summer Pass will also be available digitally in the Token Transit app.&nbsp; All OCCK Transportation services have a digital fare option.

The Rolling Hills Zoo will celebrate moms tomorrow in celebration for Mother's Day.&nbsp;

According to the zoo, all mothers who attend the zoo tomorrow will receive free admission for the theme "Wild About Moms." The day will consist of a spring craft show, where guest can shop for spring &amp; summer decor. Gifts will also be available for mothers, fathers and grads that attend.

The event will start at 9:00 am - 3:00 pm filled with activities, margaritas/mimosas, coffee drinks, sno cones, sponsor and photo booths, animal meet &amp; greets and much more.

The zoo's restaurant will also offer a Chicken Avocado Wrap meal with avocado aioli dressing, fries and a drink for $12.99.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to Oct. 31, as do the harmful algae blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.

A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g., direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.

KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

KDHE Issues Blue-Green Algae Advisory

ELL SALINE - An area school elementary playground that is meant not just for students, but for community members is looking to be renovated since its installment in 1989 and they can use your help.

Ell Saline USD 307 is seeking donations for their new elementary school playground, that is looking to be established soon. According to the district they have reached over $400,000 in funds, but will need more.&nbsp;

"We are incredibly grateful for the generous donations we’ve already received from Ell-Saline families and businesses in the Salina area. Their support has been vital in getting this project off the ground. However, we are still working to raise the remaining funds needed to complete the playground renovation. Every additional dollar brings us closer to making this safe play space a reality for our students and the wider community" stated Ell Saline Elementary Principal, Darla Raile.

The playground will consist of 75 ADA accessible apparatuses, 2 large play areas, courts for 4 square, basketball, volleyball, gaga ball and more.&nbsp;

"We want a good quality playground for our kids and the rest of the community" said Ell Saline Preschool Teacher, Emily Komarek.

According to the district, the significance of this project is due to their current playground equipment being "outdated" and that it no longer meets today’s safety or accessibility standards.

Throughout the years, runoff and shifting soil have caused areas of the playground to erode toward the nearby ditch—making some pieces of equipment unsafe and unusable. The unstable ground limits students’ ability to use the space fully and poses increasing safety risks.

As part of the renovation, the playground will be relocated to a more safer and central area on school grounds. This will be placed further away from vehicle traffic and on land that can be properly stabilized.&nbsp;

“We’re not just replacing old equipment, we’re creating a safer and more functional space where kids can play, explore and grow. Safety and accessibility are at the heart of this project. Our students deserve an environment where they can engage in active play without worrying about safety hazards" said Raile

Raile also commented on how this will impact the local community as well.

"This renovation is also about creating a welcoming space that can serve our entire community, not just during school hours but after hours too. With the support of our generous families and local businesses, we are excited to build a playground that will enhance the experience of everyone who comes here" said Raile.

Ell Saline School District Seeking Donations For New Playground

SOLOMON - Solomon USD 393 has announced their summer food program that will run from Thursday, May 27th - Friday, August 1st.

According to USD 393, the program will be operated at 409 N. Pine from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm&nbsp; in Solomon, KS. Hot breakfast and lunch meals can be received for pick up off Walnut St. through the patio door, which is on the west side of their building.

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, OCCK Transportation will be hosting an open house and cook out in honor of National Transportation Week.&nbsp; The event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 340 N. Santa Fe, Salina.&nbsp; 

Hot dogs, chips and bottled water will be served.&nbsp; The event is free and open to the public.&nbsp; In addition, guests will be able to view the current transportation vehicles, including a CityGo bus, meet staff and learn more about transportation.

OCCK Hosting BBQ Open House

As the school year winds down,&nbsp;summer at Salina Public Library is just getting started. The library is launching a season full of reading, learning, and celebration with programs designed to engage the community and promote literacy for all ages. At the heart of this year’s initiative is an exciting goal: to read&nbsp;20,000 books as a community&nbsp;by the end of the summer.

Participating in the challenge is simple—just read or listen to books and report how many you complete each week for the chance to win prizes. Summer reading cards can be submitted in person at the library or online through the library’s website. Whether it's picture books, chapter books, novels, or audiobooks, every book counts toward our shared goal.

The summer kicks off on&nbsp;Friday, May 23, with a&nbsp;Summer Kickoff Party&nbsp;from&nbsp;5-7 p.m.&nbsp;south of the library at&nbsp;Caldwell Plaza. Families can enjoy carnival games, face painting, and free pizza while supplies last. That same day, the library will begin distributing&nbsp;Summer Learning Packets, available in the Technology Center. These free packets are designed to help prevent the summer slide and include age-appropriate reading and activity challenges. Completed packets can be turned in for prize tickets.

To further support local families, the library is partnering with&nbsp;St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church&nbsp;to offer&nbsp;free grab-and-go lunches&nbsp;beginning&nbsp;May 27 through August 1, available&nbsp;weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.&nbsp;at the&nbsp;McKenzie Center&nbsp;across from the library. This drive-up service prioritizes children and teens ages 0–18, with adult lunches available afterward if supplies allow. Lunches are first come, first served and will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.

Later in the summer, readers are invited to celebrate their hard work. On&nbsp;Sunday, July 27, the library will host a&nbsp;Youth Summer Celebration&nbsp;at&nbsp;Kenwood Cove&nbsp;from&nbsp;6:30-8:30 p.m., complete with swimming, frozen treats, and fun.

Salina Public Library Launches Summer Program This Month

Ever wonder what zero gravity feels? Well Zero-G (Zero-Gravity) is the right way to experience just that. 

Zero-G, a one-of-a-kind first and only provider of commercial weightless flights in the country has made a stop right here in heart of Kansas for research purposes.

Since Monday, April 28th Zero-G has been in Salina conducting a 3-week research campaign at the Salina Regional Airport (SLN). According to Director of Research Operations Shay Bhardwaj, researchers from all over the world have come together in Salina to test the overall platform of Zero-G's modified Boeing 727-200 aircraft. This is aircraft is built to perform parabolic maneuvers that simulate microgravity. (Parabolic flights is when an aircraft follows a curved path, resembling a parabola, to create temporary periods of weightlessness or reduced gravity).

According to Bhardwaj, Zero-G commercial flights reach up to an altitude of 30,000 feet and passengers can experience what gravity would be like in space. The aircraft is set up where the front of the plane is called the "floating zone," which is&nbsp; a fully padded standing area and the back is a seating area for passengers. Once the aircraft has reached to 30,000 feet passengers can then get up out of their seats and enjoy the zero gravity experience.&nbsp;

Each flight includes 15 parabolas, providing passengers with approximately 30 seconds of weightlessness per parabola. The entire experience lasts about 90 to 100 minutes.

Zero-G has dedicated military airspace, which allows them to perform their parabolic maneuvers safely.&nbsp;

According to the company, Zero-Gravity was founded in Texas back in 1993 by&nbsp;Dr. Peter Diamandis, astronaut Dr. Byron K. Lichtenberg and NASA engineer Ray Cronise (who is also a K-State Salina Representative).&nbsp;

In August 2004,&nbsp;Zero-G flew its first commercial flight while operating under the same safety standards as all major airlines. Since then, Zero-G established itself as the first and only commercial zero-gravity flight provider for the general public.&nbsp;

Then in&nbsp;April 2006, Zero-G became the first commercial company to gain permission from the Kennedy Space Center to use the historic shuttle runway and landing facilities to operate its weightlessness flights.&nbsp;

A few short years later, NASA closed its own Parabolic Flight office in favor of naming Zero-G their exclusive parabolic flight provider. Zero-G has been a partner with NASA to support the agency’s scientific research. Zero-G has flown more than 2,300 research missions since its establishment.

Zero-G performs research, consumer (public) and private charter flights at costs that vary. Various Employees from Zero-G mentioned they have flown celebrities, media companies, weddings, birthday parties, mega corporations and more for their "private charter flights."&nbsp;

Zero-G mentioned they are seeking for a permanent home and Salina may just be the one for them.

Saline County Jail Bookings, May 9

A local non-profit organization is encouraging the community and wanting to support a late Saline County patrol deputy's family, who took his own life.

Salina Guns &amp; Hoses&nbsp;(non-profit) led by Saline Co. Lt. Michael Ascher, have encouraged community members on Facebook to donate towards the "Judy Martin Memorial."&nbsp;Judy Martin is the daughter of late Saline Co. patrol deputy J.W. Martin III.

According to Lt. Ascher, Salina Guns &amp; Hoses&nbsp;will be accepting all donations for Judy and her family. All donations sent to the organization will be matched up to $1,500.&nbsp;Lt. Ascher encourages people to support the Martin family in any way possible.

"For those who feel compelled to help, we want to be there for them. If you’re unable to help financially, I know the family would love to be in your thoughts and prayers" said Lt. Ascher.

With May being "Mental Health Awareness Month," Lt. Ascher highlighted the importance on spreading mental health awareness and commented on the battles 1st responders and military personnel face on a daily basis.

"A community who respects and appreciates our 1st responders, but who may or may not quite fully understand the demons that some of us battle. It’s not just law enforcement officers on the front line either. It’s the fire fighters, paramedics, dispatchers (I’d argue they might be in the worst position of all), and our military." stated Lt. Ascher.

According to Lt. Ascher, Judy Martin's mother has requested that the Saline Co. Sheriff's Office looks into their current mental health awareness process.

"If we can help save even one officer by making it easier to get help, then we would have succeeded" said Lt. Ascher.

Saline Co. Sheriff's Office Gives Remarks and Thoughts

Saline Co. K9 Deputy Craig Norris was Martin's partner for 10 years during duty. He talked about that he "spent alot of time" working with Martin and how Martin was always there for him.

Norris commented that he never really talked about anything personal outside of work and was very much to himself. However, he stated that Martin was "really affected" when Martin told him his sister passed away from cancer.&nbsp;

"He had a good heart and was a great guy. He was proud to be a cop and I feel like he always wanted to prove himself. I am still in shock about what happened and I think to myself if I could have done something to help. Mental health is important" said Norris.

Saline Co. Sheriff Roger Soldan was the Captain in Corrections when J.W. first worked for the Sheriff's Office back in July 2012. He commented on how grateful J.W. was when he worked with the Sheriff's Office.

"In June of 2014, J.W. was promoted to the position of Patrol Deputy. I know J.W. was proud of his position as Law Enforcement Officer and he served as a Field Training Officer for a number of new patrol deputies" said Sheriff Soldan.

J.W. Martin III passed away on Friday, May 2nd, 2025.

SALINE COUNTY —&nbsp;A house fire was to blame for the severe injuries a couple suffered in Saline County.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, on Thursday deputies and Rural Fire Districts 5, 7 and 2 arrived to a working house fire in the 1500 block of N. Marymount.

Once authorities extinguished the fire, deputies rescued a couple from the home. However, it was reported that a 75-year old female received serious burns and an 83-year old male suffered smoke inhalation.

The 75-year old female resident was transported to Salina Regional and then was transferred to Ascension Via Christi in Wichita. The 83-year old male resident was transported to Salina Regional Health Center.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be due to electrical issues.&nbsp; The residence is a total loss and the amount of loss is still being evaluated, according to Saline Co. Operations Captain Jim Hughes.

The Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) is wanting to raise awareness over the importance of mental health.

In the wake of Mental Health Month (May 1 - May 31st), CKMHC is encouraging the community to not only raise awareness, but to turn it into action. 

According to the organization, they are asking community members to sign up for a "Mental Health First Aid"&nbsp;class or to request someone from your workplace, school or organization. This course is meant to&nbsp;teach participants about mental health and substance use challenges.&nbsp;

Salina Organization Raises Mental Health Awareness With Events

The KWU Philharmonic Choir will celebrate Barbara Marshall Nickell, a longtime esteemed faculty member with a concert filled with selections from Disney films, religious spirituals, arias, solos and duets.

On Friday, the KWU Choir will end a successful year with a concert dedicated to Marshall Nickell, who will be retiring from her duties this year. 

According to the institution, Marshall Nickell joined the staff back in the Fall Of 1987. She has been the Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Theater Arts, where she was involved with theater at KWU and in the community as an actor, director and customer.&nbsp;

Marshall Nickell excelled in the University's debate program, earning more than 65 national championships. From 2008-2024, she led the Fine Arts Division as a key faculty members and Department Chair.

Last year, she was awarded the Kansas Speech Communication Association Collegiate Educator (KSCACE). Marshall Nickell was then inducted into the KWU Music Hall of Fame as one of the first people to do so that same year.

Marshall Nickell expounded on the importance building relationships with students and the joy she took out of it.

"Students come first and building relationships is what it's all about. The most exciting for me is to see the students grow into maturity over the years," said Marshall Nickell.

She stated that she still intends to support KWU students in the future by attending their games, events, concerts and extracurricular activities.&nbsp;

Marshall Nickell commented that she will spend her time now by visiting her twin grandchildren and family.

The concert will feature pieces of religious standards/spirituals, selections from Disney films such as "Wicked" and arias from operas. Students will also perform solos and duets, along with performances by the KWU Choir.

Friday at 7:00 pm, the concert will begin inside Sams Chapel on the campus of KWU. A special reception will follow.

According to the institution, Marshall Nickell joined the staff back in the Fall Of 1987. Salina Regional Health Center recently expanded its robotic surgical capabilities with the addition of the da Vinci SP from Intuitive Surgical. The “SP” stands for single-port and allows for complex surgeries to be performed through a single, small incision – typically 2.5 cm to 4 cm in length.

Like the multi-port da Vinci systems that have been utilized at Salina Regional since 2009, the single-port system offers the surgeon a highly-magnified view of the surgical field while seated at a computer console a few feet away from the patient table where hand and foot controls are utilized to maneuver the robotic instruments. 

The single-port utilizes three multi-jointed, wristed instruments and a 3D HD camera that is contained within the single cannula and connected to the robotic arm of the machine. The technology is utilized for urologic surgeries of the prostate, bladder and kidney.

“For many urologic surgeries the single-port technology allows us to take advantage of the precision and minimally-invasive benefits of robotic surgery through a single, small incision,” said Salina Urologist Ryan Payne, M.D. “Through our first cases with the technology, patients are clearly having less pain, fewer side effects and quicker recoveries. About half of them go home without the use of narcotic pain medicine, and don’t require any pain medicine other than Tylenol or ibuprofen.”

The single-port technology is advantageous for most urologic cases because of the direct approaches utilized in the pelvis or back of the abdomen. 

The more direct approach with the single-port technology may also make surgical time quicker than compared to the use of multi-port robotic surgery.
