Early Thursday, a Kyle Railroad train passing through Downs derailed seven railcars carrying corn, according to Kyle Railroad spokesman Tom Ciuba.&nbsp;There were no injuries, and no hazardous materials were involved.&nbsp;

Cause of Kansas train derailment under investigation

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A Saline County man accused of&nbsp;&nbsp;vandalism to a church in Wichita last weekend went before a judge Wednesday.

Michael A. Gonzalez, 23, is charged with burglary, criminal desecration, theft, and criminal damage to property, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Just after 8:30 Saturday, police responded to a reported burglary at St. Patrick Catholic Church, located in the 2000 block of N. Arkansas Street in Wichita, according to Wichita Police spokesman Brad Wright.

Officers discovered significant vandalism, including hate speech and damage to items such as statues, candles, and glass. Notably, a United States flag had been burned.

Recognizing the severity of this crime, Wichita Police and investigators—alongside federal law enforcement partners including the FBI and ATF—immediately launched a full-scale investigation. The Wichita Police dedicated Crime Scene Investigation team worked diligently to analyze evidence, leading to the swift identification of a suspect.

Officers from the Wichita Police Field Community Response Teams were provided with critical intelligence and began searching for the suspect. At approximately 2:20 a.m. Sunday, officers located and arrested Gonzalez in the 2800 block of N. Hillside in Wichita without incident.

Gonzalez remains jailed on a $500,000 bond. He is due back in court March 31, according to the district attorney's office.

Kansas church vandalism suspect faces a judge

MITCHELL COUNTY — Three small earthquakes shook north central Kansas over the past 24-hours.

Just before 8:30p.m. Wednesday, the Kansas Geological Survey reported a 2.3 magnitude quake northeast of Hope in rural Dickinson County.

At 3:47 a.m Thursday., the Kansas Geological Survey reported a quake one half mile east, northeast of Glen Elder with a preliminary magnitude 2.8.&nbsp; Four hours later, a quake with a magnitude 2.9&nbsp; shook one half mile west of Glen Elder, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

3 small earthquakes reported in north central Kan. in past 24-hours

The Salina Fire Department responded to a residential house fire at 119 S. Columbia early the morning of Thursday, March 20th. At approximately 4:20 a.m., emergency crews were dispatched following reports of a residential structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions, with the rear of the house fully engulfed and significant fire spread throughout the interior of the residence. Crews worked quickly to contain the blaze and conduct search operations.

Tragically, one victim was found inside the home. Despite rescue efforts, the individual did not survive the injuries sustained in the fire, the identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.

The Salina Fire Department, in coordination with local authorities, continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the blaze, the fire remains under investigation at this time.

A fatal house fire early Thursday morning claimed the life of one individual, according to Salina Fire Chief Shane Pearson.

Salina Fire emergency crews were dispatched to the blaze at 119 S. Columbia Street at approximately 4:20 a.m. on March 20. Chief Pearson reported that the first fire engine arrived on the scene within minutes.

"There were extremely heavy fire conditions upon arrival," Chief Pearson said.

Chief Pearson stated that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Details about the age of the deceased or the number of occupants living at the residence have not been released at this time.

The SM Hanson Music Festival Jam is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Established in 1985 by Steve and Rick Hanson, the event has grown from a simple idea to one of the most anticipated nights of the Smoky Hill River Festival, showcasing local and regional talent on a professional stage.

Bands comprising three or more members are invited to apply for a performance slot at this year’s festival jam, scheduled for Thursday, June 12.

To apply, bands should email festivaljam@smhansonmusic.com to initiate the application process. According to Rick Hanson, owner of SM Hanson Music, the initial email sets up a file for the band.&nbsp; “I will respond with a reply that includes some documents for them to fill out and a list of things to check off,” Hanson said. Band entry opened on March 15, and applications must be submitted by April 23.

The idea for festival jam came about from a conversation between Steve and his son Rick Hanson in 1985 when they were looking for ways to involve more local musicians in the Smoky Hill River Festival. At that time, the Smoky Hill River Festival had been running for nearly a decade.

“My dad and I were talking about how we could get more local musicians involved,” Rick Hanson said. “My suggestion was that we could do this showcase kind of thing—run the stage and give local bands a chance to perform. 

Hanson said the sound system had to be set up on Thursday night for the Smoky Hill River Festival to use the stage at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning.

"This was a way of them getting the sound system up and getting four hours to check everything out on the sound system,"&nbsp; Hanson said. "So the Jam started out as sort of a four hour sound check that didn't cost the festival organizers."

The first year featured 24 bands performing back-to-back, stretching well into the night until law enforcement stepped in and asked the event to wrap up. 

“The police asked us to shut down, and that’s when we standardized on 16 bands,” Hanson said.

Since then, the event has maintained a lineup of 16 bands, with an additional spot reserved for a young or emerging band, often a high school group. 

“The last couple of years, we’ve had high school bands take that spot, and they’ve been incredible,” Hanson said.&nbsp;

Festival Jam prioritizes safety while preserving community spirit

Since its inception, Festival Jam has become a beloved community tradition, known for bringing people together to enjoy a variety of local musical acts. Brad Anderson, executive director of Salina Arts and Humanities said the atmosphere on Thursday night of the festival is&nbsp;

“To have 12,000 community members around one stage, kicking off the summer by celebrating a great diversity of sound, is a wonderful way to start the festival," Anderson said.

In recent years, safety planning has become an essential aspect of organizing Festival Jam. Weather disruptions including straight-line winds and lightning in past years have canceled or delayed the event. Anderson told&nbsp; Salina Post festival organizers are developing new communication strategies and emergency protocols.

“We’ve been working with all of our first responders and emergency management on having a predictable plan for unexpected events,” Anderson said. “Last year, we built a system to make announcements from the stages, but when lightning begins striking and the sound providers are protecting their equipment those using the equipment, the power goes off to that stage, and the microphones are no longer available.”&nbsp;

To address this vulnerability, Salina Arts and Humanities purchased multiple megaphones to ensure staff can communicate with the crowd, even if the sound system fails. Additionally, contingency plans include moving attendees to the Tony’s Pizza Events Center if weather conditions demand an evacuation.

“In a nutshell, we are now following city protocols for outdoor events,” Anderson said. “If there’s lightning within a 10-mile radius of Salina, we suspend operations. If it’s just rain, we wouldn’t necessarily close the park, but if there is severe weather or lightning, we suspend all activity until 30 minutes after the last lightning strike."

Even with increased safety measures in place, Anderson emphasized that the goal remains to be safe and still have fun.&nbsp;

“We’re doing our best to balance the tradition of Festival Jam with the responsibility of keeping people safe,” he said. "One of the best moves we made was starting the festival on Thursday night and including the Jam as part of this spectacular weekend.” 

The Jam has become a launching pad for local musicians, providing the opportunity to perform on a prominent stage with a professional sound system. Over the years, bands from Kansas and surrounding states have applied for the chance to perform.

“We’ve even had submissions from as far as Colorado and Oklahoma,” Hanson said.

Despite challenges, including weather disruptions like last year’s event being cut short after just a few performances, the show continues to go on, as it has for 40 years. In favorable conditions, the event draws upwards of 12,000 attendees. 

“We’ve had years with over 13,000 people,” Hanson said. “People come from all over the state.”

As the SM Hanson Music Festival Jam marks four decades, it continues to honor the vision of its founders, blending local talent with a community atmosphere. 

“It’s an art festival—it’s a music festival,&nbsp; it's a food festival, and a celebration of community,” Hanson said. “ And I really like the music part of it.”

KDOT: All lanes of I-70 are open

One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by Mark A&nbsp;Durantino, 66, Salina,&nbsp; was westbound on Interstate 70 ten miles east of Salina.&nbsp; A strong wind gust caused the vehicle to overturn in the westbound lanes of the Interstate.

EMS transported Durantino to Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

BY SALINA POST Two of Abilene’s long-standing nonprofit organizations are collaborating in 2025 to offer a unique blend of arts and local dining experiences.

Great Plains Theatre (GPT) and the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad (A&amp;SV) are launching six special weekends featuring Saturday matinee performances at GPT, followed by dinner aboard the Smoky Valley Limited dinner train. The meals will be provided by area restaurants and caterers.

The selected productions for the series include:

Guests can book both the matinee and dinner train experience through the GPT box office at a single price.

Ross Boelling, A&amp;SV president and general manager, and Becky Dibben, GPT operations manager, developed the concept as a way to enhance Abilene’s tourism economy.

“This is another way for us to work with museums and other attractions here in Abilene to make our train rides even more special,” Boelling said. “Our 2025 schedule features remarkable entertainment options, and this program helps showcase Great Plains Theatre’s efforts to bring professional theater to Central Kansas.”

Dibben and GPT choreographer Dylan Blackwood emphasized the importance of promotional partnerships in boosting tourism. Dibben noted that visitors coming for theater often seek additional attractions, while Blackwood highlighted the growing interest from tourists visiting the Eisenhower Presidential Library.

Boelling has reserved the Smoky Valley Limited’s new Eveland Creek dining car, which seats 56 patrons. Those attending the GPT matinee will have priority seating in this car, while other diners will be seated in the Chicago and Enterprise cars.

“With limited seating, it’s best to book early,” Boelling said. Tickets for the matinee dinner train can only be purchased by calling the Great Plains Theatre box office at 785-263-4574. Patrons will choose their seating preference and menu options when making reservations.

A Plan Can Help Small and Medium-Sized Businesses Fuel Growth

It’s best practice for all businesses to have a strategic plan, from self-employed professionals to Fortune 500 Companies. Strategic plans provide vision, direction, focus and help business owners align their goals with actionable steps. Without a strategic plan, businesses risk drifting without clear priorities, leading to missed opportunities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Additionally, strategic plans help businesses anticipate potential challenges and respond to competition in a proactive manner. By setting clear objectives and identifying competitive advantages (and disadvantages), the business can develop strategies to differentiate themselves from competitors and stand out in the market.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The business owners and executives we’ve seen successfully develop and execute strategic plans were the ones willing to step outside of the normal “day-to-day” and dedicate the time to working on their company. The investment made in designing the plan, executing the plan and being held accountable to the plan, were just as, if not more important, than the actual plan itself.&nbsp;

How Does a Strategic Plan Work?&nbsp;

Simply put, a strategic plan is a roadmap to get you from Point A and Point B. We like to think of a strategic plan as if we were planning on a cross-country road trip. Before getting on the road, wouldn’t you want to take a look at a map? Of course. Yet it’s surprising how many companies attempt “to drive from LA to New York” without a map.&nbsp;

The first thing to consider is what kind of trip you want to have. Is the goal to take the fastest, most direct route? Is the goal to meander and stop to catch a show in Vegas or hike in the Rockies? Or is the goal to drive to Kansas City as fast as possible, but stay with family for a few days?&nbsp;

In other words, setting goals and objectives is the heart of a strategic plan.

In the business world, it looks like this:&nbsp;

ABC Company is making $5 million in revenue and has EBITDA of $1 million. It has 25 employees and sells products into three customer groups. Its owner’s top goal is to grow. But growth is an amorphous goal until you quantify it with some numbers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Industry research – an essential aspect of strategic planning – shows other companies in ABC’s industry have typically achieved growth of 2x to 3x revenues over the past five years. But ABC’s owner wants to achieve growth of 5x revenues and add two more customer groups over the next five years.&nbsp;

A key characteristic of a good strategic plan is the probability of success i.e. realistic. The ABC owner’s goal is aggressive, but is it realistic? A market analysis shows the owner’s goal may be realistic if ABC can acquire a competitor company in addition to achieving organic growth, and if the economy and interest rates are favorable. But those are big “ifs,” and ABC would have to be extraordinarily disciplined to adhere to the strategic plan’s roadmap.&nbsp;

Quantitative &amp; Qualitative&nbsp;

Building a strategic plan requires both quantitative and qualitative thinking. Your goal may be quantitative – say you want your company to grow from $10 million in revenues to $15 million over the next three years before going out to market. That’s quantitative. You have quantified a goal.&nbsp;

But a market analysis may show that the best-in-class companies in your sector (e.g. manufacturing industry) are selling products at gross margins of 40% to 50%. Is the goal to take the fastest, most direct route? Is the goal to meander and stop to catch a show in Vegas or hike in the Rockies? Or is the goal to drive to Kansas City as fast as possible, but stay with family for a few days?&nbsp;In other words, setting goals and objectives is the heart of a strategic plan.In the business world, it looks like this:&nbsp;ABC Company is making $5 million in revenue and has EBITDA of $1 million. It has 25 employees and sells products into three customer groups. Its owner’s top goal is to grow. But growth is an amorphous goal until you quantify it with some numbers.&nbsp;&nbsp;Industry research – an essential aspect of strategic planning – shows other companies in ABC’s industry have typically achieved growth of 2x to 3x revenues over the past five years. But ABC’s owner wants to achieve growth of 5x revenues and add two more customer groups over the next five years.&nbsp;A key characteristic of a good strategic plan is the probability of success i.e. realistic. The ABC owner’s goal is aggressive, but is it realistic? A market analysis shows the owner’s goal may be realistic if ABC can acquire a competitor company in addition to achieving organic growth, and if the economy and interest rates are favorable. But those are big “ifs,” and ABC would have to be extraordinarily disciplined to adhere to the strategic plan’s roadmap.&nbsp;Quantitative &amp; Qualitative&nbsp;Building a strategic plan requires both quantitative and qualitative thinking. Your goal may be quantitative – say you want your company to grow from $10 million in revenues to $15 million over the next three years before going out to market. That’s quantitative. You have quantified a goal.&nbsp;But a market analysis may show that the best-in-class companies in your sector (e.g. manufacturing industry) are selling products at gross margins of 40% to 50%. SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement continues to investigate weekend vandalism at a church in Wichita. On Monday while meeting with the media during a tour of the&nbsp;Kennedy Center, President Trump was asked about the crime.

Police in Wichita arrested a 23-year-old Saline County man identified as Michael Angel Gonzalez, according to Sedgwick County booking records, for the vandalism.

Gonzalez is being held in the Sedgwick County Jail on a bond of over $500,000 on requested charges of Burglary, Criminal Desecration, and Criminal Damage to Property. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney and federal prosecutors for formal charging considerations.

A high-speed chase through Salina early Sunday morning ended in a crash and the arrest of a 30-year-old driver after he fled from Salina Police Department officers.&nbsp;

According to Salina Police Capt. Mike Miller, an officer attempted to pull over a red 2010 Chevy Equinox around 2:25 a.m. on March 16 in the 300 block of South Phillips Avenue for a turn signal violation. Instead of stopping, the driver fled, leading police on a pursuit through multiple streets, including Hancock, Republic, South Ohio, Martin Avenue, and Sunrise Drive.

The chase continued until the 400 block of South Ninth Street, where the driver attempted to turn onto Lincoln Avenue at a high speed where the driver lost control causing the vehicle to crash into a utility pole.

Officers reported that the driver fled on foot and was captured within a block of the crash. The two passengers—a 24-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man—remained in the vehicle and were taken into custody at gunpoint.

"We're going to take everybody out of the car at gunpoint [following a high-speed pursuit] because we don't know if they're armed or not until we get them out and get them in our custody," Miller said.&nbsp;

 Miller said the two passengers were not charged.

The driver, identified as Codi Fairbanks, 30, of Salina, was arrested.&nbsp; faces multiple charges, including:

⦁ Felony fleeing and eluding ⦁ Felony interference with law enforcement ⦁ Reckless driving. Driving while revoked ⦁ Habitual traffic violator ⦁ 13 counts of failing to yield at stop signs ⦁ Five stoplight violations

Miller said Fairbanks ran from police because he had an active felony probation violation. The pursuit lasted about five minutes, reaching estimated speeds of 70 to 80 mph before the crash. No injuries were reported.
