Saline County Commissioners accepted a grant by the Kansas Department of Commerce (KDOC) on top of other funds, to fulfill improvements to the Senior Service building in Salina.

On Tuesday, the Saline County Commission approved by signature a $712,460 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) provided by the KDOC to assist funds towards the improvements of the Senior Services building. This amount will be added along with donations ($10,000), Earl Bane Foundation ($15,000) and Capital Improvement Program funds ($200,000), making a total of $937,460 for the project cost.

The project includes replacing parking lot, replace uneven sidewalks, install lighting around the building and replacement of the roof.&nbsp;

U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the national, non-partisan movement to limit terms for elected officials, is gathering support from state lawmakers across the nation. Its mission is to get 34 states to apply for an amendment proposal convention specific to term limits on Congress. 

2026 Kansas state senate candidate, Jim DuBois (district 24), has committed support for term limits on Congress by signing the term limits convention pledge. DuBois is the first signer in this race.

The U.S. Term Limits pledge is provided to candidates and members of state legislatures. It reads, “I pledge that, as a member of the state legislature, I will cosponsor, vote for, and defend the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the sole purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.”

In the 1995 case, Thornton v. U.S. Term Limits, the Supreme Court of the United States opined that only a Constitutional Amendment could limit the terms of U.S. Senators and House Representatives. According to Nick Tomboulides, Chief Executive Officer of USTL, the best chance of imposing term limits on Congress is through an Article V Proposal Convention of state legislatures.

“The Constitution allows for amendments to be proposed by either 2/3 of Congress or 2/3 of the states. While we’d like for Congress to take the high road and propose term limits on itself, we know they are too self-interested to do that without external pressure.” said Tomboulides. “That is why it is important to get buy-in from state legislators,” he added. Once proposed, the amendment must be ratified by 38 states.”

Tomboulides noted, “More than 87% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through a congressional term limits amendment. Jim knows this and is willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.”

After the storms from Monday and into Tuesday morning, State Street will be closed&nbsp;between Lightville and Muir Roads due to flooding, according to the Saline County Sheriff's Office.

The vacancy will be created when District Judge Rene Young retires August 1 from her position in Saline County.

Salina attorney and two City of Salina staff members nominated for 28th district judge

The Salina Fire Department (SFD) has issued a statement regarding a 'small log pile on fire' near Indian Rock Park, which was separate from the publicized 'log jam' at Bill Burke Park.

The following is a statement from the SFD:

On Saturday, July 19th, the Salina Fire Department responded to a report of a small log pile on fire along the Smoky Hill River near Indian Rock Park. It is important to note that this incident was separate from the larger and more publicized log jam located at Bill Burke Park.

Recently, social media comments have proposed burning the Bill Burke Park log jam as a method of removal. The Salina Fire Department strongly advises against this approach, as burning the log jam would pose significant safety risks and could worsen the hazard. If ignited, the fire would likely burn only to the waterline, leaving submerged debris that presents ongoing dangers to the public and waterways.

Additionally, the City’s surface water intake structure is located on the west riverbank adjacent to the log jam. Use of accelerants or chemicals to burn the logs could cause contamination in our public drinking water.

The Fire Department reminds residents that starting fires on City property, including parks, is illegal and endangers first responders and civilians alike. Violators may face charges of arson or aggravated arson, with increased penalties if the fire results in injury to responders or bystanders.

The City of Salina and the Fire Department are actively working to find safe and effective solutions to manage and remediate the log jam at Bill Burke Park. In the meantime, the public is urged not to attempt burning or walking on the log jam due to the inherent safety risks.

Residents should always exercise caution near any water body and adhere to the City of Salina’s ordinance on recreational fires:

· Fires must be at least 25 feet away from structures or combustible materials unless contained in a Fire Marshal-approved container.

· Combustible materials within 25 feet of the fire must be cleared beforehand to prevent the spread.

The Salina Fire Department thanks the community for their cooperation and vigilance in ensuring the safety of our parks and waterways.

Smoky Hill Museum invites the public to participate and sign up for Street Fair Parade

The Salina Public Library turned up the volume on vocabulary this past Saturday with its first-ever&nbsp;Adult Spelling Bee Showdown, a delightfully nerdy night of competition, laughter, and community spirit.

Sponsored by Hutton Design + Build, the event brought in a full house of spellers and spectators, raising over $4,500 to support the library’s&nbsp;Re-Imagining Our Library&nbsp;initiative. Funds will go toward transforming the Library’s Youth Services department into a more dynamic, accessible, and welcoming space for Salina’s young people and families.

Ten teams of four faced off in a bracket-style tournament that proved spelling isn’t just for kids. Each player had to take the mic every round — no phones, no writing, and no spellcheck — just teamwork, guts, and a few strategic twists. Before the showdown, teams could buy limited-use “advantage passes” for a do-over or a new word, and any team following a misspelled word could steal it on the spot.

Between the nail-biting tie-breakers and the clever passes, it was clear: Salina is full of sharp spellers and quick thinkers. The result was a high-stakes, high-hilarity evening filled with gasps, giggles, and plenty of unexpected upsets — including strong finishes from the “Wildcard” teams, made up of individuals who signed up solo and were paired with strangers just before the event. With no shared history or prep time, two of these wildcard teams still cracked the top three.

“We loved seeing adults cut loose and have fun with something so classically academic,” said Allyson Walker, SPL Head of Fundraising &amp; Development. “It reminded us how powerful libraries can be in bringing people together, in smart, silly, joyful ways.”&nbsp;

Thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of the teams, audience, and sponsors, the evening was a true community win, and a big boost to an exciting library transformation.

LINCOLN COUNTY &amp; SALINE COUNTY - The US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS) has issued a flash flood warning for northern Lincoln County until late Monday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS), north Lincoln County is under a flash flood warning until 11:45 pm. Reportedly, radar is estimating 4 to 6 inches of rainfall across northern Lincoln county between Barnard and Lincoln.&nbsp;The storms are nearly stationary with more heavy rainfall likely.

The US National Weather Service stated this flash flood warning is a "very dangerous flooding situation" and to not drive in flooded areas. They are advising people to report any&nbsp;flooding problems to local officials.

According to the US National Weather Service, northwest Saline County is under a "high risk" of flash flooding,&nbsp;especially near the town of Glendale with slow moving thunderstorms producing 4 to 5 inches of rainfall.

Saline County Emergency Management advises people in the Saline County area to stay home during this flash flood warning. Saline County Emergency Management has stated the following:

Avoid low-lying areas and roads near creeks or ditches.

Keep headlights on and drive slowly if travel is absolutely necessary.&nbsp;

Please do not risk your safety or the safety of emergency responders.

Flash flood warning issued for northern Lincoln County and high risk for northwest Saline County

ABILENE - Summer travel is in full bloom in Abilene, thanks to Kansas Tourism's popular Sunflower Summer program. With nearly 2,000 admissions recorded so far, Kansas families are discovering why Abilene continues to earn national accolades as one of the Best Historic Small Towns in America.

The Sunflower Summer program, which began July 12, provides free admission for Kansas students and a parent to participating attractions. Abilene is proud to offer six must-see experiences this season:

To help families make the most of their visit, Visit Abilene Kansas released a two-day itinerary featuring the town’s award-winning attractions, historic sites, and family-friendly charm—all while keeping costs low.

"Many families are feeling the financial pinch this summer, and the Sunflower Summer program allows them to still have fun and meaningful family experiences at no cost," said Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau.

About 400 volunteers from the Ark Church, completed a full morning and afternoon of service work around Salina on Saturday, July 19.

"Serve Day," by the Ark Church in Salina (2020 S. Ohio St.) was a day that volunteers from any background would come together and travel to 34 different businesses, parks, organizations and locations across town for service work. The service work would range from yard spruce-ups, taking care of the elderly, helping nonprofits/businesses, making hygiene bags, writing letters to first responders, law enforcement, military personnel and much more other services.

"This is just a really cool thing, and our church has accepted the call to serve Salina," said Ark Church Pastor, John Huseman. "I am glad we were able to come along side and help different ministries and organizations take some pressure off of them."

Before "Serve Day" started, all of the volunteers met at the Ark Church with their groups to find out which service they would be doing. From there, the groups would disperse from the church and arrive at their desired destination to serve.&nbsp;

"I was happy to serve for my first time," said volunteer, Jovan Suarez. "Volunteering like everyone, brings a joy to the Lord and it was fun meeting more people within our church."

"What I love about Serve Day is that our church just goes out and says, how can we help you?" said Huseman. "Serving others is a simple concept that Jesus demonstrated so well, and we try to follow His lead."

"Serve Day" is an annual occurrence by the Ark Church and happens every year in July.&nbsp;

The Ark Church also does an annual grocery giveaway, Christmas box distribution, prayer walks and other services each year.

Ark Church serves Salina for annual "Serve Day"

Theatre Salina is one of the first community groups nationally to be given the opportunity&nbsp;to produce "Come From Away." 

This amazing musical tells the story the small town of Gander, Newfoundland that doubled in size within a few hours when on 9/11 when 38 planes landed in a few hours and doubled the size of the population. This musical displays the humanity, generosity and humor that made 7,000 residents and 7,000 passengers lifelong friends and with stories worth telling. 

With a generous grant from the Jack Wilson Charitable Trust, the theatre is able to offer a free performance on September 11, 2025 at 7:00 pm&nbsp;for first responders; firemen, police, dispatchers, EMT, nurses. Each responder can also bring one person with them.&nbsp;

Twelve talented actors portray more than 50 roles from the major of Gander, to the woman who runs the animal shelter to first day on the job news reporter to Beverley Bass, the first woman to become a captain for a major airline. The story weaves stirring music, humor, and humanity into an award-winning show. 

"Come From Away" received Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Circle Critics and Olivier awards across the world. It has toured across the United States, Europe, Asia and Canada.&nbsp;Theatre Salina is one of the first community theatres honored with the opportunity&nbsp;to produce the musical. 

The creative team includes musical direction from Tyler Breneman, choreography from Maggie Spicer Brown, set design by Josh Morris, lighting and sound design by J.R. Lidgett, costume design by Jenn Morris, and direction from Michael Spicer.

Theatre Salina one of only community theatres to produce nationally renowned musical 

Salina Police are actively investigating a scam, after a 22-year old woman reported she lost around $2,000.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, July 18th, a 22-year old woman reported she was scammed via a phone call. Allegedly, she received a call from someone claiming to be from "Evergy" and advised her she had not paid her 'electrical bill.' The caller then told her that she needed to provide the payment 'immediately' or her power would be 'shut down.'

Moreover, the caller told her she would not be able to provide the payment to 'Evergy' and instead pay it by going to a store using 'Green Dot' (prepaid card company).

The woman then went to bank and withdrew around $500 and went to Walgreens to make the Green Dot transaction. After she made the payment, she contacted the caller from "Evergy" that the payment was made. She was then told that the payment was 'only a minimum payment with an outstanding balance of $1,000.' Afterwards, she went and obtained $500 more.&nbsp;

The scammer then told her that her transaction could not be accepted, because it had to be 'one payment of $1,000' instead of two separate payments. Allegedly, she received a call from someone claiming to be from "Evergy" and advised her she had not paid her 'electrical bill.' The caller then told her that she needed to provide the payment 'immediately' or her power would be 'shut down.'Moreover, the caller told her she would not be able to provide the payment to 'Evergy' and instead pay it by going to a store using 'Green Dot' (prepaid card company).The woman then went to bank and withdrew around $500 and went to Walgreens to make the Green Dot transaction. After she made the payment, she contacted the caller from "Evergy" that the payment was made. She was then told that the payment was 'only a minimum payment with an outstanding balance of $1,000.' Afterwards, she went and obtained $500 more.&nbsp;The scammer then told her that her transaction could not be accepted, because it had to be 'one payment of $1,000' instead of two separate payments. The woman then went back to Green Dot to make the single transaction, but was not allowed to do so. The US National Weather Service has issued an 'extreme heat warning' for Central Kansas until Wednesday evening.

According to the&nbsp;US National Weather Service, on Saturday, July 19th an 'extreme heat warning' was issued to be in effect from now until Wednesday evening (July 23rd). Heat indices were reported to be as high as 110 degrees, with high's being over 100 degrees. 

It was reported that humidity will also remain in place through this period, which will make it feel even hotter. Chances of showers and storms could occur through the week, with the best chances occurring on Thursday, July 24th.

The US National Weather Service has left some tips about staying safe during this advisory:

Work outdoors early or late in the day, and take breaks in the shade as often as possible

Check up on the elderly, sick and those without A/C

Never leave children or pets unattended in your vehicles ('look before you lock')

Throughout the project, temporary traffic signals will direct one lane of traffic through bridge repair work. Motorists should expect minimal delays. 

During the final phase of construction, the sidewalk will be closed for patching. This phase of construction is expected to begin in September, conditions permitting.

Wildcat Construction Co. Inc., of Wichita, is the prime contractor for this $735,403 project. Work is scheduled to be completed in November, conditions permitting.

KDOT urges all road users to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones.

Lindsborg Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum

LINDSBORG - The Lindsborg Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum is closing out the books on a quarter-million-dollar grant that permitted impressive improvements.

Adam Pracht, Marketing and Communications Director, said that in the two years since receiving the grant, the museum has made significant strides in terms of its appearance, historical restoration, safety and security, and ADA accessibility.

“The results were transformative. The museum buildings look so much better, historical treasures have been preserved, and we’ve made many necessary upgrades,” he said. “The list of everything it accomplished at the museum is nothing short of astonishing.”

The museum was one of just 18 recipients out of 228 applicants to receive the tourism grant from Kansas Commerce in 2023. The grant was an effort by the State to boost Kansas tourism with remaining federal COVID relief dollars.

Located next to the Smoky Hill River, the museum is owned by an independent private nonprofit and consists of 10 historic buildings across 15 acres. It is home to the 1898 Smoky Valley Roller Mills and the 1904 World’s Fair Swedish Pavilion (both on the National Register of Historic Places).

The achievements made possible by the SPRINT grant include:

· Installation of a new alarm system in the main museum building, which houses historic archives and most of the museum’s artifacts.

· Main entrance improvements, which included an ADA-accessible sidewalk, a new solid handrail with solar-powered built-in lights, and updated landscaping.

· Exterior paint and a new roof for the West Kentuck School. (Used 1903-1952, this one-room schoolhouse was originally southeast of Lindsborg and is the last school of its kind in the area.)

· Exterior paint and a new roof for the Academy Building. (Built in 1879, this was the first public school building in the area and was later used as a Bethany College classroom.)

· New exterior paint for the Lindsborg Union Pacific Train Depot (Completed under Kansas Pacific in 1879, the depot served the area until 1972. It was moved to museum grounds in 1974.)

· Full restoration of the original 1908 Dempster Windmill located on the museum’s Heritage Square.

· A new Old Mill courtyard metal fence designed and created by Lindsborg Local Lloyd Rohr that depicts scenes of the historical Old Mill, symbols of wheat and the Swedish seal, and the 1904 World’s Fair Swedish Pavilion. It is more secure than the chain link fence and more aesthetic.

· Tree removal and trimming on the museum grounds and campgrounds, creating more safety for museum guests and less risk of damage from falling limbs or trees.

· Museum front porch repairs, including porch roof support columns that were failing.

· New guttering on the main museum building, which means better drainage and less risk of water damage to the building.

· Tuckpointing (masonry repair) of the Old Mill Powerhouse brick walls, as well as a new roof and guttering for the building – both of which were rusting and starting to fail. The building houses the electric motor that powers the 1898 Smoky Valley Roller Mills during Millfest (annually on the first Saturday in May.)

· Upgrades to the Old Mill heating system. The updates allow more control of the system and cost savings.

· A modern and fully reworked back-gallery exhibition on Lindsborg history and the immigrant experience.

Aubrey Wheeler, Executive Director, said the award of the grant preceded her start at the museum, but she’d seen the museum’s state as a guest before it received the SPRINT Grant.

“It’s almost like an entirely different place,” she said. “The difference is wonderful, and we can’t thank Kansas Commerce enough for selecting us for the grant.”

The Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum celebrates and preserves the pioneering spirit of the Smoky Valley by educating, entertaining, and building community across generations so that history comes to life. With special emphasis on the period from 1870 to 1910, the museum includes two buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places and extensive archives and artifact collections. The museum seeks to honor the rich story of Lindsborg and its people.

 </figure>Lindsborg Old Mill and Swedish Heritage MuseumLINDSBORG - The Lindsborg Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum is closing out the books on a quarter-million-dollar grant that permitted impressive improvements.Adam Pracht, Marketing and Communications Director, said that in the two years since receiving the grant, the museum has made significant strides in terms of its appearance, historical restoration, safety and security, and ADA accessibility.“The results were transformative. The museum buildings look so much better, historical treasures have been preserved, and we’ve made many necessary upgrades,” he said. “The list of everything it accomplished at the museum is nothing short of astonishing.”The museum was one of just 18 recipients out of 228 applicants to receive the tourism grant from Kansas Commerce in 2023. The grant was an effort by the State to boost Kansas tourism with remaining federal COVID relief dollars.Located next to the Smoky Hill River, the museum is owned by an independent private nonprofit and consists of 10 historic buildings across 15 acres. It is home to the 1898 Smoky Valley Roller Mills and the 1904 World’s Fair Swedish Pavilion (both on the National Register of Historic Places).The achievements made possible by the SPRINT grant include:· Installation of a new alarm system in the main museum building, which houses historic archives and most of the museum’s artifacts.· Main entrance improvements, which included an ADA-accessible sidewalk, a new solid handrail with solar-powered built-in lights, and updated landscaping.· Exterior paint and a new roof for the West Kentuck School. (Used 1903-1952, this one-room schoolhouse was originally southeast of Lindsborg and is the last school of its kind in the area.)· Exterior paint and a new roof for the Academy Building. (Built in 1879, this was the first public school building in the area and was later used as a Bethany College classroom.)· New exterior paint for the Lindsborg Union Pacific Train Depot (Completed under Kansas Pacific in 1879, the depot served the area until 1972. It was moved to museum grounds in 1974.)· Full restoration of the original 1908 Dempster Windmill located on the museum’s Heritage Square.· A new Old Mill courtyard metal fence designed and created by Lindsborg Local Lloyd Rohr that depicts scenes of the historical Old Mill, symbols of wheat and the Swedish seal, and the 1904 World’s Fair Swedish Pavilion. It is more secure than the chain link fence and more aesthetic.· Tree removal and trimming on the museum grounds and campgrounds, creating more safety for museum guests and less risk of damage from falling limbs or trees.· Museum front porch repairs, including porch roof support columns that were failing.· New guttering on the main museum building, which means better drainage and less risk of water damage to the building.· Tuckpointing (masonry repair) of the Old Mill Powerhouse brick walls, as well as a new roof and guttering for the building – both of which were rusting and starting to fail. The building houses the electric motor that powers the 1898 Smoky Valley Roller Mills during Millfest (annually on the first Saturday in May.)· Upgrades to the Old Mill heating system. The updates allow more control of the system and cost savings.· A modern and fully reworked back-gallery exhibition on Lindsborg history and the immigrant experience.Aubrey Wheeler, Executive Director, said the award of the grant preceded her start at the museum, but she’d seen the museum’s state as a guest before it received the SPRINT Grant.“It’s almost like an entirely different place,” she said. “The difference is wonderful, and we can’t thank Kansas Commerce enough for selecting us for the grant.”The Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum celebrates and preserves the pioneering spirit of the Smoky Valley by educating, entertaining, and building community across generations so that history comes to life. With special emphasis on the period from 1870 to 1910, the museum includes two buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places and extensive archives and artifact collections. Lindsborg museum receives improvements thanks to generous grant over $250K
