It’s that time again. Each spring Central Kansas gardeners and homeowners notice the small purple flowering weed called henbit which is just beginning to flower now.&nbsp; This common lawn and garden weed often gets people wondering what to do.&nbsp; Is it necessary to use a herbicide to control it or is there more to consider?&nbsp; Learning more about henbit may help.

Henbit is a plant in the mint family, which means like other mints, it has a square stem.&nbsp; This is one of the identification features.&nbsp; The flower is small, pink to purple, lipped, and tubular.

Henbit is classified as a winter annual, which means much of it actually germinated last fall and has been hanging out at about ground level all winter just waiting for spring to arrive.&nbsp; If you go out and look, you can find it at ground level beneath lawn grasses or even on bare soil in gardens in late fall and winter.&nbsp; If you find it on a protected south side of a home it will have already grown large and flowered by now.&nbsp; Flowering will often begin in March and flowers are most abundant during the month of April. The plant will grow four to six inches tall as it matures.&nbsp; Once temperatures warm up in June, the plant will have finished its annual life cycle, produced seed, and died off.

Although henbit is certainly an unwanted invader in many yards and gardens, it does have some benefits that should be considered before deciding to eradicate it completely.

Henbit is such an early bloomer that it is actually an important early spring food source for many pollinators.&nbsp; The small purple flowers of henbit provide both a pollen and nectar source for long tongued bees such as honeybees and bumble bees during the flowering period in March and April.

With this in mind, learning to tolerate henbit can certainly be a help to our local pollinators and is encouraged. Henbit is also quite attractive when a ‘stand’ is in full bloom.

If getting rid of henbit is a must for your situation remember that it should be controlled earlier rather than later.&nbsp; The optimum time to control it in a lawn is in the early fall with a pre-emergent to prevent it from successfully germinating.&nbsp; In Central Kansas, a pre-emergent should be applied in late August or early September (assuming no lawn overseeding is planned) to help stop many winter annual weeds including henbit.&nbsp;&nbsp; Barricade (prodiamine) is a common pre-emergent labeled for henbit that is often used since it has a long soil residual. Other preemergent products labeled for henbit include Dimension (dithiopyr) Gallery (isoxaben), Halts (pendimethalin) and others.

Henbit can also be controlled later in the fall (late October through November) after it has germinated with many broadleaf weeds spray products (there are many labeled for henbit).&nbsp;&nbsp; Be sure to follow label direction on any herbicide that is applied. Remember that henbit can continue to sporadically germinate through late fall and even winter and so some later germinating plants may be missed by a herbicide application in October or November.

Spring applied broadleaf weed herbicides can also be effective if applied early enough to stop the flowering and seed production of the plant.&nbsp; Caution is always encouraged, be sure to only spray on a calm day to avoid any unwanted spray drift which can damage other nearby plants that may be breaking dormancy.

Healthy turf is the best weed control

It is important to remember that henbit is rarely a big problem in a healthy lawn that is managed well.&nbsp; Henbit is not very competitive in a dense lawn. A thick and healthy turf is ultimately the best long term weed control in any situation.

GRAVES: Henbit, a weed with benefits

Submitted Salina Public Schools (SPS) has released a new school safety video. The seventh video is a part of a series focused on working with families to uphold school safety.

In the video, Superintendent Linn Exline explains the anonymous reporting app, STOPit, and the response procedure,&nbsp;Run, Hide, Fight. The video series was started in 2023, after results from a community survey indicated interest in learning specifics about school safety.&nbsp;

"We value the feedback from our community as it helps us improve and create the best possible environment for our students,” said Linn Exline, superintendent. “Thank you for entrusting us with your children's education and for supporting our shared commitment to their safety and success."

Saline County Jail Bookings, March 26

SMITH COUNTY—Authorities are investigating the cause of a fatal fire in Smith County.

Just after 5a.m. Tuesday, first responders were alerted to a fire at the Home on the Rang Lodging Motel on East Highway 36 in Smith Center, according to Sheriff Travis Conway.

First responders pulled a unresponsive person from the structure who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Smith County Sheriff'f office, investigators from the Kansas State Fire Marshal and a K9 from Sedgwick County Fire are working together to investigate.&nbsp; No foul play is suspected.&nbsp; Authorities have not released the name of the victim or a damage estimate.

By SALINA POST CLOUD COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Cadillac Escalade driven by Lori A. Weber, 38, Jamestown, was eastbound on Kansas 28 just west of Cloud County 80 Road. The Cadillac rear-ended a 2016 Subaru Forrester driven by Lisa M. Goldy, 60, Jamestown, who had struck a deer and stopped in the eastbound lanes.

A private vehicle transported a 14-year-old female passenger in the Subaru to North Central Kansas Medical Center. The drivers and three juvenile passengers in the Cadillac were not injured. All six were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

MANHATTAN, Kan – As egg prices continue to increase in grocery stores, Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said it might be beneficial to consider replacing eggs in certain recipes.

Blakeslee said the type of egg substitute to choose depends on the end product and the function it needs to provide. She cited information from her extension colleagues at the University of Illinois, who published various substitutes for recipes that require binding, leavening, moisture and other alternatives.

Blakeslee recommends using two ounces of extra-firm tofu to replace one boiled egg. If a recipe utilizes eggs to hold ingredients together, Blakeslee suggests using one tablespoon of chia seeds or ground flax seeds mixed with three tablespoons of water to replace one egg.

Another option, she said, is one package plain gelatin and two tablespoons of warm water to replace one egg.

“For leavening in baking, use the chia or flax seed mixture plus a half teaspoon of baking powder for each egg,” Blakeslee said. “For moistness in baking, use a quarter cup applesauce, mashed banana, pureed avocado, pureed garbanzo beans, or silken tofu for each egg. Another option is two tablespoons mayonnaise for each egg.”

According to the American Egg Board, shell eggs in the original carton can be stored in the refrigerator cabinet for 4-5 weeks beyond the pack date.

“This will likely go past the ‘sell by’ date on the carton, but they will be safe to use after that date as long as they have been refrigerated. This can help reduce food waste,” Blakeslee said.

Blakeslee also suggested freezing eggs for later use.

“Think about cutting back daily egg use to every other day to change up your routine and add variety,” Blakeslee said.

Salina residents are invited to the Smoky Hill Museum on April 3 to hear archaeologist Dr. Donald Blakeslee share his latest findings about the rediscovery of Etzanoa, a Native American city near Arkansas City. The presentation, which is free to attend, will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the museum, located at 211 W Iron Avenue. Those unable to attend in person can join via Zoom by registering at <a href="http://www.smokyhillmuseum.org">www.smokyhillmuseum.org</a>.

Dr. Blakeslee, a Wichita State University archaeologist and author, first made headlines in 2015 when he and his team uncovered the lost city of Etzanoa, once home to more than 20,000 people. Since then, his research has expanded far beyond the original discovery, challenging long-held beliefs and potentially rewriting the history of Kansas.

As a sought-after speaker, Dr. Blakeslee will briefly revisit how he located Etzanoa before diving into the new and exciting revelations his team has uncovered. Seating at the museum is limited and available on a first-come, first-seated basis.

The Smoky Hill Museum, a nationally accredited history museum in downtown Salina, offers free admission and is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum Store features a variety of regional and Kansas products, local artwork, and unique gifts.

<a href="https://www.kansascommerce.gov/innovation/">The Kansas Office of Innovation</a> served as a convening partner last week for the Gamechangers and Champions event, held in Wichita, which brought together a diverse set of partners to support entrepreneurship and innovative startup development in Kansas. The 2025 Gamechangers and Champions was co-presented by NXTUS, a Wichita-based catalyst for the startup ecosystem.

“By bringing together startups, angel investors and ecosystem champions from across Kansas, we are creating a space where groundbreaking ideas can take root, partnerships can spark, and the future of our state’s innovation ecosystem can be shaped,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “This collaboration with NXTUS reflects our enduring commitment to empowering local startups, cultivating collaboration and fostering a culture of innovation that drives economic growth and opportunity for all Kansans.”

In addition to professional development and networking, Kansas startups competed in the Bracket Bash for Innovators and Angels — a startup pitch competition — where entrepreneurs had the opportunity to showcase their businesses, gain exposure to investors, and compete for funding that could propel their ventures forward. A $20,000 grand prize was delivered to pitch competition winner, Andrew Marquez with VU Scholarships of Roeland Park and, selected by a vote of the more than 200 attendees, Matt Williams with Noonan brought home the “Fan’s Choice” award, which carried a $2,500 prize.

The Love, Chloe Foundation invites the community to lace up their running shoes for a morning of family fun, fitness, and fundraising at the 2025 Love, Chloe Family Fun Run on Saturday, April 26. Whether you're a seasoned runner, a casual walker, or just want to cheer on participants, this annual event is a great way to make a real difference in the lives of families facing childhood cancer.

The event kicks off at 8 a.m. at the City Lights Stage at Ash and Santa Fe in downtown Salina, rain or shine. Participants can choose from a <a href="http://lovechloerun.org">1-mile walk/run, a 5k walk/run, or a 10k run</a>, ensuring that people of all ages and fitness levels can get involved. For those who prefer to support from a distance, <a href="https://register.chronotrack.com/r/83032">a virtual participation option is also available.</a>

Love, Chloe Family Fun Run registration open: Join the cause and make a difference

A Salina woman fell victim to an online rental scam that cost her more than $3,000, according to the Salina Police Department.

Capt. James Feldman reported that on Saturday, March 22, a 37-year-old Salina resident was searching for rental properties on Facebook Marketplace when she found a listing for a house in the north end of Salina. The woman began communicating with a person who claimed to be a realtor representing “Blue Sky Reality.”

The scammer instructed the victim to send money as a deposit to a Chime account to secure the property. After transferring more than $3,000, the woman attempted to follow up about gaining access to the residence and obtaining the keys. According to the victim, all Facebook posts had been removed, and communication with the alleged realtor ceased.

SPD is warning the public to be cautious when conducting transactions online, especially when dealing with rental properties. SPD officers advise the public to never send money to someone without verifying their identity and to avoid paying for items or services sight unseen.

If anyone has fallen victim to a similar scam or has information that could aid in this investigation, they are encouraged to contact the Salina Police Department.

Salina woman loses $3K in online rental scam

Salina Police Department officers are investigating a series of graffiti vandalism incidents that occurred downtown Saturday night.

According to SPD Capt. James Feldman, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of S. Santa Fe at about 9:30 p.m. on March 22 after a caller reported seeing three individuals spray painting a detached garage belonging to Compro Realty, 157 S. Santa Fe.

SPD officers found more graffiti spray painted on the alley wall of Martinelli’s Little Italy, 158 S. Santa Fe, the south wall of the AT&amp;T building, 137 S. Santa Fe, and a nearby garbage dumpster. Capt. Feldman noted that many of the spray paintings were vulgar.

The suspects were described as three individuals wearing hoodies. They were seen leaving the area in what was possibly a black Mini-Cooper.

The estimated damage from the vandalism is approximately $600.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Salina Police Department at (785) 826-7210 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (785) 825-TIPS.

Saline County Jail Bookings, March 24

By SALINA POST In recognition of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, 800 free colorectal cancer screening kits will be available throughout March for individuals aged 45 to 75 who have not had a recent colonoscopy.

The screening kits can be picked up at participating pharmacies in Salina, Abilene, Concordia, and Lindsborg while supplies last. The test uses an advanced fecal blood test requiring only one sample and has no food or drug restrictions. Participants can mail their samples to the Tammy Walker Cancer Center for lab analysis using a pre-paid postage envelope included in the kit. Results will be shared with both the patient and their primary care physician.

There are some risk factors that you cannot change such as your age.&nbsp;Your risk of colorectal cancer goes up as you age. Other risk factors include having type 2 diabetes and having a family history of colorectal cancer. You can reduce your risk of colorectal cancer by getting to and staying at a healthy weight, limiting intake of red and processed meats and eating more fruits and vegetables.&nbsp;It is also important to avoid excess alcohol and get regular physical activity.&nbsp;If you smoke cigarettes quitting can help reduce your risk of colorectal cancer and many other types of cancers. And the most important thing is to know yourself, your family history, and your risks and make sure to get regular checkups and cancer screening tests.

Regular colorectal cancer screening is one of the most powerful weapons against colorectal cancer. The colonoscopy is the gold standard for preventing colorectal cancer. All men and women should get screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 45 and continue getting screened until age 75. Those with a family history of the disease should talk to their physician about screening at a younger age. The decision to be screened between ages 76 and 85 should be made on an individual basis. If you are older than 75, talk to your doctor about screening. Screening can be done either with a test that looks for signs of cancer in a person's stool (a stool-based test), or with an exam that looks at the colon and rectum (a visual exam).

 </figure>By SALINA POST In recognition of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, 800 free colorectal cancer screening kits will be available throughout March for individuals aged 45 to 75 who have not had a recent colonoscopy.The screening kits can be picked up at participating pharmacies in Salina, Abilene, Concordia, and Lindsborg while supplies last. The test uses an advanced fecal blood test requiring only one sample and has no food or drug restrictions. Participants can mail their samples to the Tammy Walker Cancer Center for lab analysis using a pre-paid postage envelope included in the kit. Results will be shared with both the patient and their primary care physician.There are some risk factors that you cannot change such as your age.&nbsp;Your risk of colorectal cancer goes up as you age. Other risk factors include having type 2 diabetes and having a family history of colorectal cancer. You can reduce your risk of colorectal cancer by getting to and staying at a healthy weight, limiting intake of red and processed meats and eating more fruits and vegetables.&nbsp;It is also important to avoid excess alcohol and get regular physical activity.&nbsp;If you smoke cigarettes quitting can help reduce your risk of colorectal cancer and many other types of cancers. And the most important thing is to know yourself, your family history, and your risks and make sure to get regular checkups and cancer screening tests.Regular colorectal cancer screening is one of the most powerful weapons against colorectal cancer. The colonoscopy is the gold standard for preventing colorectal cancer. All men and women should get screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 45 and continue getting screened until age 75. Those with a family history of the disease should talk to their physician about screening at a younger age. The decision to be screened between ages 76 and 85 should be made on an individual basis. If you are older than 75, talk to your doctor about screening. Free colorectal cancer screening kits available throughout March

WICHITA, Kansas —&nbsp;Kansas students are spending fewer days in school than they did decades ago, and the state’s top education leader wants that to change.

Education Commissioner Randy Watson is urging districts to cancel breaks or extend the school year to make up for days that were canceled because of inclement weather.

Most districts lost about eight days of school this winter because of snow or bitterly cold conditions.

Watson recently told the Kansas State Board of education that districts should also consider half-day summer school in June and July, at least for kindergarten through third grade students who are below grade level in reading or math.

He said the boost is needed to make up for learning losses that began before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Recovery is incrementally very slow,” Watson said. “While I think we should start thinking about our schedule for next year, I’m thinking, ‘How do we even jumpstart the learning … right now?’”

Kansas law requires public schools to have a minimum of 186 days, or at least 1,116 total hours each academic year. Over the past decade, most districts have opted to have longer but fewer school days — adding minutes to the daily schedule but shortening the school year.

In 2008, the average school year in Kansas was 174 days. This year, it’s 166. Some districts — particularly those with four-day weeks — have school only 141 days a year.

No district meets the minimum daily requirement of 186 days. The longest academic calendar is 183.4 days.

Watson said districts have added about 21 minutes to the school day, which equates to three minutes per class period in most high schools.

“Go ask a music teacher: ‘Would you rather have three minutes, or would you rather go to school eight more days?’” Watson said. “A music teacher’s going to say, ‘I want the eight days.’”

State law allows the Kansas State Board of Education to waive the minimum requirement for districts because of inclement weather or other factors.

But Watson discouraged board members from granting waivers, saying districts could make up the time by canceling scheduled breaks or adding days to the calendar.

“The state board will look at that at the end of the year when we see if you’ve exhausted all your avenues,” Watson said. “And right now, you have a lot of time left that you could … make up that time.”

Watson also urged half-day summer school for some young students. He proposed classes from 9 a.m. to noon Monday to Thursday through June and July, with extended weekends for Memorial Day and July Fourth.

He said that schedule would amount to at least 48 hours of additional learning time.

“If we could get 90% of the kids 48 to 49 hours of instruction, what progress we could make in a short period of time,” Watson said.

He said districts could use special education or state at-risk funds to help pay for summer classes.

The proposal stops short of year-round schooling — an idea some educators and lawmakers have floated in the past that is unpopular with most Kansas districts and families.

Two years ago, Republican Rep. Bill Rhiley&nbsp;<a href="https://kslegislature.gov/li_2024/b2023_24/measures/hb2224/#:~:text=Short%20Title,districts%20for%20each%20school%20year." target="_blank">introduced a bill</a>&nbsp;that would have mandated a minimum of 195 eight-hour school days or 156 10-hour days, but it never made it out of committee.

Advocates of year-round school say frequent, shorter breaks are better for students because they mitigate learning loss that can happen over long summer vacations. Opponents say year-round schedules cost more and leave less time for extracurricular activities like summer-league sports.

Watson said he’s not opposed to year-round school. But a half-day summer school plan for students who need it most would be an incremental improvement that could have huge benefits, he said.

“Engaging parents in that conversation is going to be easier for them to agree to than changing the entire schedule that we’ve run for 100 years,” Watson said.

Several Kansas districts spent a portion of their federal COVID-19 funding to pay for expanded summer school programs. But&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmuw.org/education/2021-06-21/the-pandemic-left-kids-in-kansas-needing-summer-school-more-than-ever-yet-less-willing-to-enroll" target="_blank">only a small fraction of students attended</a>.

Wichita, the state’s largest school district, sent about 21,500 invitations to its summer programs for students in kindergarten through eighth grade in 2021. Despite incentives such as free breakfast, lunch and transportation, only 4,600 — about one in five — enrolled.

Watson said Kansas needs a social and cultural shift toward academics the way many districts and families emphasize sports and other activities.

“If you have a high school kid who’s involved (in sports or band), it’s hard to take a vacation because they’re required to be there for weight training or for marching,” he said. “We need that intensity around academics.”

Kansas education commissioner: Kids need more time in school

The final numbers are in. The Greater Salina Community Foundation’s 14th annual Match Madness giving day raised a record-breaking $1,187,195 through 4,021 gifts from 1,551 donors, surpassing last year’s total of $837,015.

The event, held at the Salina Fieldhouse on March 13, provided financial support to 103 local nonprofits. The total includes $879,418 in donations and $307,777 in match and bonus prizes. Since its inception in 2012, Match Madness has raised over $7.15 million for 117 area nonprofits.

The day of giving also included 581 free throws made as part of the Bill Grevas Memorial Minute to Win It Free Throw Contest, sponsored by Bennington State Bank. One impressive half-court shot was sent through the net by Ell-Saline 2020 Graduate Sawyer Kramer.&nbsp;

In addition to the financial impact, the event engaged 250+ volunteers and 611 local fifth graders, who participated by donating $10 each to their chosen nonprofits.

Jessica Martin, GSCF President and Executive Director, expressed gratitude for the community's continued generosity.

"The generosity here is truly something special. We are so lucky to have such strong nonprofits in the Salina area, and the number of gifts received through Match Madness is a testament to that.”

<a href="https://www.matchmadnessgscf.org/">The Greater Salina Community Foundation’s </a>14th annual Match Madness giving day is expected to raise more than $1 million in just one day, setting a new fundraising record for the event.

According to the <a href="https://www.matchmadnessgscf.org/">Match Madness website</a>, a total of more than $837,015.91 was donated through 3,213+ gifts, supporting 103 nonprofits, with an additional $300,000 in matching funds pushing the overall impact past the million-dollar mark.&nbsp;

The $837,015.91 raised—and still growing—marks a record-breaking total for Match Madness, surpassing the $721,494.60 pledged in 2024.

The day-long fundraiser, held at the Salina Fieldhouse on March 13, provided both immediate financial support and long-term stability for local charities. Donations made during Match Madness go into each nonprofit’s permanent endowed fund at the foundation, ensuring ongoing financial growth. At the same time, every gift earns a matching grant of up to 50%, giving organizations instant access to additional funds for urgent needs.

GSCF's annual Match Madness event continues to grow, drawing both longtime supporters and new donors to contribute to local nonprofits. 

GSCF President and Executive Director Jessica Martin said she was humbled by the community's overwhelming support and participation. 

“It’s just really humbling to think that we have that many people in our community that give at Match Madness every year, and then we still find a way to attract new donors," Martin said.&nbsp;“Every year I always wonder, ‘Okay, are we going to hit a limit?’ But the community always rises to the occasion to give what they can and make it a great day for everybody.”

Throughout the day, donors and community members interested in learning more about nonprofits and area agencies contributed in person at the Fieldhouse, online, and by mail, taking part in a community-driven effort that has grown significantly over the past 14 years. Martin noted that final totals could increase as additional mailed-in donations are processed.

"Right now the leaderboard is showing $830,000, but we’re probably going to be closer to $850,000 when it’s all said and done," Martin said. "We have employer matches to put in, and some other gifts that have come in the mail that we’re still adding. We also haven’t even put in the fifth-grade donations yet – that’s another $6,000!”

This year’s Match Madness also had a more spacious setup, which received positive feedback from not only the nonprofits but attendees as well. The additional space allowed for better interaction, especially with students who participated in the giving process.

“We had tremendous positive feedback, not only from the nonprofits but from the teachers and the public," Martin said. "Everybody had a full table, and they were able to bring so much more to share about their mission.”

Not only did nonprofits have more space, but the turf at the fieldhouse provided a more conversation-friendly environment.&nbsp;

“The turf helped absorb alot of the noise, and people could actually hear the questions and comments from the fifth graders and donors," Martin said.

Susan Hawksworth, director of the Smoky Hill Museum said she loved the new setup and appreciated having more room.

"The new big space was wonderful because we were able to, with the quieter noise and more space, have good conversations with people and the fifth graders who stopped by our booth," Hawksworth said.&nbsp;"People didn’t skip us because we were already talking to someone—they were able to come and wait without feeling rushed."

Match Madness has expanded significantly since its inception 14 years ago. Hawksworth talked about how the event has grown into a major area-wide community fundraiser not just specific to Salina.&nbsp;

"It’s amazing how it’s grown from just a small little event downtown to the fieldhouse and all the charities and nonprofits from our area can be part of it. It has brought more people and more in terms of giving. People want to be a part of Salina and to move Salina forward in the future," Hawksworth said.&nbsp;

For the third year in a row, all Saline County fifth graders participated in Match Madness, each receiving $10 to donate to the endowed fund of their favorite nonprofit—an amount that will be matched up to 50% by the Foundation.

Before the event, students learned about how endowments work and the importance of charitable giving. Upon arriving at the Salina Fieldhouse, they had the opportunity to visit 10-15 nonprofit booths, learning firsthand about the impact of each organization in the community. After gathering information, students filled out donation forms and selected which nonprofit would receive their $10 contribution, which, with the Foundation’s match, could grow to $15.

Each student’s donation remains in that nonprofit's permanent endowed fund, meaning their gift continues growing while generating grants for years to come.

“Changing how the fifth graders donated was really cool – they had paper money this year to give instead of just filling out a form. That way, nonprofits could say thank you face-to-face,” Martin said.

Martin credited the event’s success to the Salina community’s dedication. More than 200+ volunteers played a crucial role in making Match Madness a success.

"This event can’t happen without volunteers. It can’t happen without the nonprofits. And it certainly can’t happen without the donors," Martin said. "It’s the perfect example of what happens when a community comes together."

As Match Madness 2025 comes to a close, Martin reflected on the community’s commitment to giving and her sincere appreciation to all those who attended.&nbsp;

"The generosity here is truly something special," she said. "We are so lucky to have such strong nonprofits in the Salina area, and the number of gifts received through Match Madness is a testament to that. If I could say just one thing to the Salina area it would be THANK YOU!"

Final totals will be confirmed in the coming week as the remaining donations are processed. With an estimated $1.1 million directed toward local nonprofits, Salina’s generosity continues to shine—demonstrating that every donation, big or small, plays a vital role in strengthening and uniting our community.
