The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced that a portion of N. Hedville Road will be closed next week for railroad crossing work.

N. Hedville Road will be closed Monday through Oct. 15 by the K&amp;O Railroad to replace the crossing on the north side of Hedville. The railroad will be detouring traffic onto Interstate 70, N. Halstead Road, and State Street. 

Local traffic is asked to find alternate routes during construction.

With the intention of smoothing the transition by helping customers learn and adapt to the new guidelines, a “soft rollout” began July 19, 2021. Since then, customers’ waste has been collected regardless of guideline compliance; however, when out of compliance, customers have been left an education flyer with a checked box noting which guideline was not met. The soft rollout was extended to October 18 to allow time for the City’s additional cart order to arrive after manufacturing delays postponed delivery nearly seven weeks. Since, during that time, the City was unable to provide customers with their requested number of carts to effectively follow the new guidelines, the sanitation work group did not fully implement them. With customers having now received their additional waste carts, the City will begin full guideline implementation. For example, items left outside the waste cart(s) will not be collected. Only refuse within fully-closed waste carts will be collected.

Full implementation of waste cart setout guidelines has Oct. 18 start

Saline County has released information about grants concerning water and wastewater infrastructure.

On Tuesday, Saline County Commissioners approved a program for expenditure of the $500,000 in water and wastewater infrastructure funding allocated through the County’s American Rescue Plan Act Framework. 

This program calls for accepting applications from local cities, water districts, and other water/wastewater providers for grants of up to $50,000 per recipient. S.&nbsp;Kipp Road between E. Schilling Road and E. Water Well Road will be closed to traffic beginning Tuesday for the replacement of drainage structures. 

Weather permitting, the roadway should be opened by Oct. 22, 2021.

 Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times, but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Salina Downtown, Inc., has announced that registration forms are now available for the 2021 Parade of Lights.&nbsp;

The parade is scheduled for Nov. 20. The route will be on Santa Fe Avenue from Elm Street to Prescott Avenue.

The drive-through clinic is scheduled for 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct.13 at the 4-H Building in Kenwood Park and is for persons ages 19 and older. Those participating are asked to wear short sleeves and face masks.

Vehicles should enter from the south near the Kenwood Cove entrance, according to information from the health department. 

The health department noted that persons with the following health plans who bring their insurance cards, may be covered for flu shots.

●Medicare Part B or Medicare Advantage Plan C

●KanCare/Medicaid (Sunflower State Health Plan, Aetna Better Health of Kansas, United Health Care Community Plan)

According to the health department shots also will be available for persons with out of network/no health insurance and will be payable at the time of service.

Fall Fix-Up is a few weeks away and The Friends of the River needs your help. 

The organization seeks volunteers for the annual community event, which is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon on Oct. 9.

Volunteers will meet at their worksites, and are asked to wear facemasks and bring their own gloves. Social distancing will be manditory. Tools will be provided, according to information on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/smokyhillriver">The Friends of the River</a> Facebook page. Children ages 12 and under need to be accompanied by an adult.

There are a variety of projects with which to help during this year's event. Those projects include the following.

Ashby House Painting at the shelter, cleaning up flowerbeds, and removing debris and trash from properties. Meet at 204 S. Eighth Street.

Community Housing Development Organization Put new siding on a house, indoor painting, and yard work. Meet at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and N. Ninth Street.

City of Salina Putting medallions on storm drains about trash in the water ways. Meet in the parking lot of The Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

North Town Clean the landscaping at Five-Corners. Meet at Five-Corners, N. Ninth Street and N. Broadway Boulevard.

Homes on N. Ninth Street Scrape, paint, and do yardwork. Meet at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and N. Ninth Street.

Old Smoky Hill River channel Pick up trash near the Smoky Hill River next to the YMCA. Meet in the parking lot of the YMCA, 570 YMCA Drive.

Salina Food Bank Add mulch to the garden, do yard work, and plant landscaping. Meet at 255 S. Chicago Street.

Salina Rescue Mission Paint, do yard maintenance, move furniture. Meet at 1716 Summers Road.

The Temple Paint rooms and clean the theater. Enter through the red door on the north side of the building, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Additionally, the City of Salina has announced free residential trash disposal for all Saline County residents at the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 9. The landfill is located at 4292 S. Burma Road.

Customers must have Saline County license plates on their vehicles for free disposal. Vehicles from other counties will be required to pay normal tipping fees. Commercial waste haulers will be given priority (standard rates apply).

The Ottawa and Saline County CASA Program is offering training this fall for persons interested in becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer. 

The program is seeking 18 new volunteers to Change a Child’s Story™.

An informational meeting about CASA volunteer work will take place at the CAPS office, 155 N. Oakdale, Salina, KS on Sept. 8, 2021 at 5:30 pm. Training will commence Sept. 15 at 5:30 pm and every Wednesday until Nov. 3, 2021. People interested in joining the CASA program who cannot attend the informational meeting are encouraged to call the CAPS office at (785) 825-4493 for more information.

CASA volunteers advocate for abused or neglected children who are in the foster care system through no fault of their own. There are currently 36 children being served by 35 CASA volunteers in the 28th judicial district. However, there are nearly 7,000 youth currently in the Kansas foster care system.

Increasing CASA volunteers will increase the likelihood of a child exiting the foster care system faster and staying out of the foster care system longer. According to 2018 data from the Kansas CASA Association, children who had an advocate reached permanent placement faster, when compared with all children in out-of-home placement; 95 percent of kids with a CASA volunteer and stay out of long-term foster care; and 90 percent of kids with a CASA volunteer do not re-enter the child welfare system.

Food insecurity affects one in every five children in Saline County. That is why the Salina Emergency Aid/Food Bank, whose mission it is to provide emergency needs for food, shelter and well-being to Saline County residents, has announced a matching gift challenge intended to secure funds needed to expand operations to meet the rising needs of the community.

“We are so privileged to have specials donors pay tribute to our 50th anniversary by matching donations received before Dec. 31 up to $50,0000. We can’t think of a better way to encourage others to join us in providing families safe access to nutrition and resources," said Food Bank Executive Director Karen Couch. "In addition to funding a strategic expansion of our operations, this campaign gives us the endurance to keep fighting hunger and helping our most vulnerable citizens in the years to come.”

As the need for resources continues to grow due to the pandemic, many Kansans — including children, seniors and increasingly vulnerable populations — find themselves struggling to get back on track. The Food Bank distributed a record-setting amount of food and hygiene items over the last year through food programs and partner relationships. 

Looking to the future, Couch said, “Our food bank is more than just a short-term solution to a household in crisis. We are positioned to be a key step on the road to long-term stability, but it takes hard-working team of creative individuals, volunteers and donors to make it happen.”

Food bank announces $50,000 matching gift challenge

The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA) invites older Kansans and caregivers to the Answers for Older Kansans (AOK) Sunflower Connections events. 

The first event that highlights practical information and includes fun for seniors and caregivers is slated for Sept. 1 at the Marion Community Center, 203 N. Third Street in Marion. A second event is planned for Sept. 30 in Wamego in conjunction with the community’s Senior Resource Fair.

“COVID-19 has popped our plans for our popular annual Sunflower Fair—so these two events are ways for people in this part of Kansas to get trustworthy and practical information on topics important to anyone who is going to celebrate more birthdays,” said Julie Govert Walter, executive director of the NC-FH AAA. 

She added that experts will cover “How to Make your Money Last as Long as You Do,” “Positive Aging” and “Talking With Your Doctor: Being Your Best Health Care Advocate.”

Walter said that each event features expert speakers, prizes, entertainment and lunch. For the safety of participants, each event is limited to 50 people.

Registration costs $10 per person and includes a catered lunch.

K-State Research and Extension is offering a free, educational workshop for persons new to Medicare.

Medicare Basics: New to Medicare will be offered online&nbsp;via Zoom at noon on Aug. 30. 

Learn the basics of Medicare, including eligibility, how and when to apply, costs, what is covered by the various parts, and how to fill the gaps. Programs available to assist low-income individuals will also be discussed. Anyone interested in learning more about the Medicare maze would benefit from the program, particularly those who are nearing age 65 or who help aging parents with insurance and financial matters.

The program is presented by extension educator Deb Wood, CFP®, Central Kansas Extension District, and local SHICK counselor.&nbsp;

At a time when health information has never been more important,&nbsp;the Red Cross is screening all blood,&nbsp;platelet,&nbsp;and plasma donations from&nbsp;self-identified&nbsp;African American donors for the sickle cell trait.&nbsp;This additional screening will provide Black donors with an additional health insight and help the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help&nbsp;patients with sickle cell&nbsp;disease.&nbsp;Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same&nbsp;race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fighting sickle cell disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Donors can expect to receive&nbsp;sickle cell trait screening results, if applicable,&nbsp;within one to two weeks through the Red Cross Blood Donor App and the online donor portal at <a href="http://RedCrossBlood.org">RedCrossBlood.org</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification that are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.

Donors can also save up to 15 minutes at the blood drive by completing a RapidPass®. With RapidPass®, donors complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of donation, from a mobile device or computer. Join Salina first responders, donate at Battle of the Badges blood drive

There are multiple local, area blood donation opportunities this month

Many weather experts predict a destructive hurricane season this year. The American Red Cross needs volunteers to help on the ground and blood donors to roll up a sleeve to maintain a stable blood supply in the face of emergencies.

“We’re preparing for another extremely busy disaster season, and it’s critical to have a trained, ready volunteer workforce to make sure we can provide relief at a moment’s notice,” said Jan Hale, communications manager, Kansas and Oklahoma Red Cross Region. “This year’s wildfire season is already very active and dangerous because of the severe drought and dry woodlands across the west. And experts are predicting we could see 10 or more hurricanes in the upcoming weeks.”

SHELTER VOLUNTEERS AND&nbsp;HEALTH PROFESSIONALS&nbsp;NEEDED

The Red Cross needs new volunteers to support disaster shelters.&nbsp;Volunteers will help with reception, registration, food distribution, dormitory, information collection and other vital tasks inside disaster shelters. Both entry- and supervisory-level opportunities are available.

The Red Cross also needs volunteers who can work in disaster shelters to address people’s health needs and provide hands-on care in alignment with their professional licensure (registered nurse and licensed practical nurse/licensed vocational nurse). Daily observation and health screening for COVID-19-like illness among shelter residents may also be required. We have both associate and supervisory level opportunities available. If you are an RN, LPN, LVN, APRN, NP, EMT, paramedic, MD/DO or PA with a current and unencumbered license, this position could be right for you.

After most disasters this year, the Red Cross plans to open group shelters. However, in some communities, hotels may be more appropriate if the risk of COVID-19, including the delta variant, is particularly high. The Red Cross will also continue many of the safety precautions implemented in 2020, including masks, health screenings, enhanced cleaning procedures and encouraging social distancing.

Local Disaster Action Teams provide 24-hour emergency response to local disasters, particularly home fires, ensuring that those affected have access to resources for basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing. If you are team-oriented and want to help your neighbor, the DAT responder may be just the thing for you.

Both entry- and supervisory-level opportunities are available.The Red Cross also needs volunteers who can work in disaster shelters to address people’s health needs and provide hands-on care in alignment with their professional licensure (registered nurse and licensed practical nurse/licensed vocational nurse). Daily observation and health screening for COVID-19-like illness among shelter residents may also be required. We have both associate and supervisory level opportunities available.
