Get an update on the Smoky Hill River Renewal Project during an open house and presentation on Dec. 1.

The event is scheduled for 5:30-7 p.m. Dec. 1 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall of Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway.

Those attending can view exhibits and speak with project representatives. A formal presentation about the project is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and is estimated to last approximately 30 minutes.

The presentation also will be broadcast on the City of Salina's Facebook page and on Cox Cable Channel 20.

The update is scheduled to include the following, according to information from the City of Salina.

"Public input has been continuously incorporated into the Smoky Hill River Renewal Project throughout the planning process. The public is once again being asked to provide feedback, prior to the project moving into the design and construction of Phase I of the Smoky Hill River Renewal Project," the city noted in a news release.

Smoky Hill River Renewal Project update open house Dec. 1

The Salvation Army Community Thanksgiving Dinner will once again be take out only.

In partnership with G.L. Huyett, the Salina Country Club, and Applebee's, the Salvation Army will offer its annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner from noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 25. 

For the safety of those participating, the traditional Thanksgiving dinners will be available via drive-through pick up at the south entrance of the Salvation Army Community Center, 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Dinners will be limited to four per car.

Deliveries for homebound individuals will be available and must be called in by 3 p.m. on Nov. 23.

The Greater Salina Community Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2022-2023 school year.

This year more than $95,000 will be distributed to area students through the foundation’s 32 scholarship funds. Eligible scholarship applicants include graduating high school seniors, current college students and&nbsp;non-traditional students.

Each scholarship has a unique set of criteria established by donors to the foundation.

Depending on the scholarship, awards range from $250 to $10,000, and some are renewable for up to four years. Scholarships are not necessarily based on financial need.

All scholarship applications must be submitted through the community foundation’s online scholarship portal by Feb. 15, 2022. Scholarships will be awarded by mid-April. The application portal and individual scholarship guidelines can be found at <a href="http://www.gscf.org/scholarships">www.gscf.org/scholarships</a>.

Last year, the foundation awarded over $90,000 to students across north-central Kansas.

As the holidays approach and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns about a potential spike in flu cases this year, it’s important that those who are eligible, healthy and feeling well make an appointment to donate blood or platelets. The American Red Cross continues to address an ongoing emergency blood shortage, and donors are urged to give now to combat the lowest blood supply levels at this time of year in more than a decade.

According to the CDC, flu cases reached an all-time low last year due to masking, physical distancing and shutdowns across the country, and many Americans may have reduced immunity this year. When seasonal illness increases, the number of healthy blood donors tends to decrease. Paired with winter weather, busy holiday schedules and ongoing COVID-19 concerns, the already-struggling blood supply could be further impacted throughout winter.

There is no blood donation waiting period for those who have received a flu shot or a Moderna, Pfizer or Johnson &amp; Johnson COVID-19 vaccine or booster, so long as they are symptom-free. Donors are urged to schedule an appointment now by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

To encourage donors to help meet the needs of hospital patients this month, all who come to donate Nov. 1-23 will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email, thanks to Amazon.* Those who come to give around the Thanksgiving holiday, Nov. 24-28, will receive a pair of Red Cross socks, while supplies last.

Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and additional precautions – including face masks for donors and staff, regardless of vaccination status – have been implemented to help protect the health of all those in attendance. With a hat tip to community and family, the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank has created a cookbook filled with love and many recipes.

Pass the Plate: A Taste of Salina is available for purchase from the food bank for $18. To place an order, call the food bank at 785-827-7111 or email <a href="mailto:salinafood.cookbook@outlook.com">salinafood.cookbook@outlook.com</a>.

For 50 years, the food bank has assisted thousands of families who have needed additional food support. Funds raised through cookbook sales will go toward assisting Saline County residents in need.

"Here in Kansas, family dinners are still a tradition. Grandparents share homemade recipes that have been passed down through the generations, and folks reminisce about that one dish that brought everyone together around the table. This Taste of Salina cookbook was created with love by the staff, board members, volunteers, friends, and neighbors of the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, all of whom share a love for food and a passion for community," a part of the forward to the cookbook reads.

Karen Couch, food bank executive director, told Salina Post that the organization began soliciting recipes in February by putting notices in a variety of locations, including church bulletins and on Facebook. 

"We had over 200 recipes submitted from 90 friends and neighbors," Couch said.

People could submit as many recipes as they wished.

The cookbook is in a hard-sided three-ring binder that includes 107 pages of recipes. The sections of the cookbook include Appetizers &amp; Beverages, Soups &amp; Salads, Vegetables &amp; Sides, Main Dishes, Breads/Rolls, Desserts, Breakfast, and Miscellaneous.

"Scattered throughout the cookbook are handy cooking and meal prep guides, as well as tidbits of information about the Food Bank," Couch added.

The Salvation Army in Salina has announced that Angel Trees will again be placed at Walmart and Sams Club for this Christmas season. 

 People wishing to help may select an angel from the tree and purchase new clothing or a gift card for a child in need.  Gifts may be returned to the provided bins at each location or to The Salvation Army 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue. 

 Angels will be available beginning Nov. 29. 

 If you would like an angel and are unable to select one from the tree you may call The Salvation Army at 785-823-2251 and speak to Roxanne.

Salina Wedding Fair set for February

Three drive-through booster vaccination clinics using the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine are scheduled for November.

The clinics will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Kenwood Park. Please see the map for the location.

The clinics are sponsored by the Saline County Vaccination Collaboration, Saline County Health Department, Salina Family Healthcare Center, and Salina Regional Health Center.

●To be eligible for the booster, you must have received your second Moderna or Pfizer shot six or more months ago or the Johnson &amp; Johnson shot two or more months ago, according to information from the Saline County Vaccination Collaboration.

●You will need to take your vaccination card.

●There is no out-of-pocket cost to anyone. Insurance will be billed, if applicable.

Three COVID-19 booster vaccination clinics set in Salina

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced the closing of N. Holmes Road for drainage work.

N. Holmes Road will be closed to through traffic from Humbargar Road to Ottawa Road starting Friday for the replacement of a cross-road drainage structure. Weather permitting, the roadway should be opened by Jan. 14. 

 Local traffic is asked to find alternate routes around the project area.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

The workshop is intended to grow awareness of the importance of succession planning for small business owners in the region. Small business succession planning helps ensure that communities retain their core businesses and that owners are prepared for the next chapter in their life. There will be time for questions and answers from participants following thepresentation.

Free business succession planning workshop planned for Salina

The Salina Vagabond Players has announced audition dates for the group's upcoming production.

Auditions for the next comedy mystery dinner theater presentation of the Salina Vagabond Players, Deck the Halls with Parts of Charlie, will be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 and 8 in The Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

The cast includes four adult men and three adult women. The show is intended for mature audiences.

Show dates are Jan. 7-8 and 14-15 in Martinelli’s Little Italy, 158 S. Santa Fe Avenue. Rehearsals will begin on Nov. 21 in The Temple and run Sunday through Thursdays.

The time for Christmas cheer is just around the corner! 

Tony’s Pizza Events Center and the Salina Area United Way (SAUW) are teaming up to bring A Dueling Pianos Christmas on Dec. 3.

Presented by Tony’s Pizza Events Center, A Dueling Pianos Christmas is a benefit for the Salina Area United Way’s 2022 annual campaign. In addition to the musical entertainment, a host of other activities are planned for the evening, including a full meal, silent and live auctions, and wine/whiskey pulls.

The SAUW will receive a portion of ticket sales as well as all proceeds from the night’s activities.

A Dueling Pianos Christmas, will combine music, comedy, and audience participation into a fast-paced and highly entertaining event. Songs are based completely on audience requests, giving the show a unique atmosphere. No matter what, it will be a sing-along, laugh-along, clap-along party!

Entertainment will be provided by HiFi Productions, featuring Salina native Ryan McCall, a member of regional favorite band Joe’s Pet Project.

Tickets for this event are on sale now. Platinum seating is $500 per table and includes tickets for eight guests, two drink tickets per guest, two bottles of wine per table, meals, and entertainment. Gold seating is $50 per person and includes two drink tickets, a meal, and entertainment. Christmastime event to benefit Salina Area United Way

The City of Salina has announced its curbside leaf collection schedule for this fall.

General Services staff will be conducting curbside leaf collection from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, weather permitting. This schedule is subject to change depending on when the leaves actually begin to fall. 

As the weeks progress, staff will provide public updates to help keep everyone wishing to participate in the program properly informed. To help staff collect all the leaves set out by the public this season, included below are the participant guidelines.

●Rake and pile leaves between the curb and sidewalk. If no sidewalk exists, pile leaves directly behind the curb. Crews will not be picking up bags nor collecting leaves in the alleys.

●Don’t rake or blow leaves into the street as this can be a hazard to traffic and is a violation of City Code. Additionally, placing leaves in the street may cause problems for our storm drainage systems.

●Don’t park vehicles directly in front of or behind leaf piles, as this makes collection more difficult for our crews.

●Have your leaves ready for collection on the first day of the schedule for your respective zone.

●There will only be one round of curbside leaf collection in each zone; however, customers may call in to report locations missed by the leaf collection crew or when weather conditions or late leaf deposits require additional collection.

Registration now open for 11th annual Frosty Fun Runs

Medicare Open Enrollment begins today, giving people with Medicare the option to shop for new coverage for the coming year. 

This applies to both Part D and Medicare Advantage plans.&nbsp;

Those who are content with their coverage do not have to make a change during open enrollment, but everyone with Medicare should at least look over all their current insurance information.

Fall Open Enrollment runs from Oct. 15-Dec. 7.&nbsp;This is your opportunity to compare plans to see if another plan will offer better coverage at a more affordable price.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Medicare Plan Finder is the easiest way to look at overall costs and make those decisions.&nbsp;&nbsp;If changes are made, the new coverage will take effect on Jan. 1.

Plans are allowed to change their cost and coverage rules from year to year, so you need to read mail from your plan to see if any changes affect you. In addition to moving drugs to different tiers with a different pricing structure, they may also change network and preferred pharmacies. If you did not receive this information, call your plan to request a copy.&nbsp;

There are seven drug plans that will no longer be offered in 2022. The company will automatically enroll beneficiaries in a different plan. Beneficiaries in those plans should definitely take time to compare plans for coverage to make sure their medications are covered by the new plan, and to make sure it is most cost effective for them. In particular those currently enrolled in Blue Cross Blue Shield Enhanced, Express Scripts Medicare Saver, and Wellcare Medicare Select should compare and make sure the new plan they were moved to suits their needs for next year.

Be very cautious calling numbers you see advertised on TV. These national ads for Medicare Advantage plans often refer to benefits that may be allowable by law but are not available in our area, and often include misinformation such as saying everything is free.&nbsp; It is critical to research the provider network and consider the true out-of-pocket costs before changing health care plans. Don’t let yourself be pressured on the phone without doing some research and remember nothing is free, and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

A Kaiser Family Foundation study found that 72% of beneficiaries do not review their drug coverage each year. Some of this may be because beneficiaries are overwhelmed with the number of plans.&nbsp;

If you would like assistance during open enrollment, free, unbiased, and confidential SHICK counselors are available. Many K-State Research and Extension offices have SHICK counselors to assist beneficiaries in comparing plans during open enrollment.

For other counties, contact your local extension office to see if they offer this service.

Two churches are asking local residents to help give the gift of warmth.

Salina's Sunrise Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church are collecting new and clean, gently used coats to be distributed to those in need.

"If you would like to purchase coats to donate, we suggest that you purchase children's coats or children's socks and underwear," the churches noted in information provided to Salina Post.

Those wishing to donate items are asked to take them to Salina First Presbyterian Church by Wednesday. The church is located at 308 S. Eighth Street.

Distribution of the items will be during the Salina Coat Drive, scheduled for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 23 in Blair Hall at First Presbyterian Church, 308 S. Eighth Street.

If you have unused medications that you no longer need, you have multiple options for safely disposing of them. 

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Oct. 23 and the Saline County Sheriff's Office is partnering with Salina Regional Health Center for a drive-through drop-off location. Persons wishing to get rid of unneeded prescription drugs can drop them off in the circle drive at the main entrance of Salina Regional Health Center, 400 S. Santa Fe Avenue, between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 23.

Additionally, the sheriff's office plans to have a second collection location at Dillons, 1235 E. Cloud Street from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 23.

If you're unable to make it to either location, you can drop off unused medications in the dropbox located in the lobby of the sheriff's office, 251 N. 10th Street, between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. On weekends, unused medications can be turned in anytime at the Saline County Jail visitation window. The jail entrance is located on the W. Elm Street/N. 12th Street side of the building.

Blood donations help those with breast cancer

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Red Cross is reminding donors of the importance of blood to those undergoing treatment.&nbsp;According to the National Cancer Institute, roughly 1.9 million people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. this year, and more than 281,000 of those individuals will have breast cancer.

Patients with breast cancer and other cancers may need blood products on a regular basis during chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications. In fact, nearly 25% of the blood supply is used by cancer patients.&nbsp;

People across the country depend on the kindness of blood donors. Donors are urged to make an appointment to give blood or platelets as soon as possible by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting <a href="http://RedCrossBlood.org">RedCrossBlood.org</a> or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-73-2767).

Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.Health insights for donors&nbsp;At a time when health information has never been more important, the Red Cross is screening all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait. This additional screening will provide Black donors with an additional health insight and help the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help patients with sickle cell disease&nbsp;who require trait-negative blood.&nbsp;Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fighting sickle cell disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Donors can expect to receive sickle cell trait screening results, if applicable, within one to two weeks through the Red Cross Blood Donor App and the online donor portal at <a href="http://RedCrossBlood.org">RedCrossBlood.org</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;
