Saline County kicked off our inaugural "Love Your Mental Health" campaign last week by offering CopeNotes subscriptions to all county employees. We are pleased to announce subscriptions are now open and available to Saline County residents.

"We understand that there is no 'one-size-fits-all' answer to combating mental health issues," explained Phil Smith-Hanes, County Administrator. "This is just one tool to help reach the portion of our community who prefer to receive their mental health support through a digital, proactive, and anonymous platform."

With low in-person attendance in mental health programs, Cope Notes aims to address the need for digital solutions that maintain consistent communication with individuals seeking preventative care, as well as those reluctant to engage with providers altogether.

Cope Notes provides individuals with randomly timed messages containing anything from psychology facts to exercises and journaling prompts. Every subscriber’s text sequence is unique so that no two users ever receive the same message at the same time. Each Cope Notes text must first undergo a thorough review process by a panel of peer-support advocates and mental health professionals, in order to ensure that the messages will have a positive effect on the subscriber’s health. The ultimate goal of the service is to train the brain to disrupt negative thoughts and promote a more positive pattern of thinking.

While Cope Notes encourages members to reply to text messages, it does not offer real-time conversations, but rather encourages members to use replies as an anonymous, confidential journal. A person in crisis can text the word "HELP" to connect with a crisis counselor at the Crisis Text Line.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saline County: CopeNotes for residents now available

Feb. 21 through March 4, the Salina Police Department will join other law enforcement agencies in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma with increased enforcement near high schools to raise awareness on roadway safety. 

 Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in the United States, ahead of all other types of injury, disease, or violence. 

 Officers will issue citations to any individual who refuses to obey the traffic laws, whether it is for speeding, texting, or failing to buckle up. 

 Remind teens that driving is a privilege and encourage them to learn about the importance of driving safely.&nbsp;

ABILENE - Emerging scholars are invited to submit a presentation abstract as a featured speaker during the annual D-Day Commemorative Symposium. 

The Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower Presidential Libraries seek submissions from emerging scholars to be a featured speaker during the virtual symposium held the first week of June.&nbsp;The symposium focuses on specialized topics related to the Allied effort in World War II.

The 2022 theme emerges from famed World War II reporter Ernie Pyle’s work Here Is Your War. This symposium seeks to examine the reporting of the war from the front, news of home to those fighting, and war propaganda that helped unite the two.&nbsp;

Our goal is to enhance the future of WWII scholarship by examining lesser-known topics and showcasing new and emerging scholars.&nbsp;Each program is scheduled for one hour. The guest speaker will present his/her topic for approximately 40 minutes, allowing time for audience participation and questions at the end. Each program wraps up with a Scholar Spotlight where we get to know a little bit more about each of these up and coming scholars.

Submission packets should include the presentation abstract, applicant contact information, education status, and academic goals summary. While there has been a significant and encouraging response to the dire need for blood across the nation, the American Red Cross needs more people to give in the weeks ahead to recover from its worst blood shortage in more than a decade.

Since the Red Cross issued its first-ever blood crisis alert, a surge in COVID-19 infections&nbsp;has further complicated efforts to rebuild the blood supply. In the Kansas and Oklahoma Region, more than 2,100 scheduled donations went uncollected so far this month as blood drives were changed or canceled because of COVID cases or required quarantines. In addition, donors with COVID must wait 14 days after their symptoms resolve or, if they are asymptomatic, after a positive test before giving blood again&nbsp;

ABILENE - Various books about leadership will be the focus of the 2022 Ike's Virtual Book Club.

The theme for this year's virtual book club is Dwight Eisenhower: The Making of a Leader. Ike's Book Club will meet using the Zoom platform.

"Our book selection focuses on the categories of family, military, presidency, and mentorship. The book discussions will each focus on how they relate to Dwight Eisenhower's leadership," the Eisenhower Library noted in a news release.

The first book, in February, is The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni. The discussion is scheduled to be led by Gene Chaves with Humanities Kansas. The 2022 version of the book club is scheduled to conclude with Susan Eisenhower discussing her recent book How Ike Led.

Salina Presbyterian Manor is now accepting entries for the 2022 Art is Ageless® juried exhibition.

Open to artists age 65 and older, the annual exhibition is scheduled for March 8-10. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition is scheduled in Homewood Suites by Hilton, 115 E. Mulberry.

Area artists who are age 65 or older may submit entries for the exhibition and/or the competition for an opportunity to be featured in the 2023 Art is Ageless® calendar, according to information from Salina Presbyterian Manor. 

Artwork being entered in the competition must have been completed after the artist turned 65. Additionally, the artwork must have been completed within the past five years. 

Artwork will be accepted from both amteur and professional artists. There are nine entry categories from which to choose, including the following.

The City of Salina today began picking up tree debris from residential areas that were impacted by last Wednesday’s wind storm.

According to a news released issued Monday afternoon, residents are encouraged to set debris along the right-of-way or curbside for pickup. Crews were to begin pickups in south Salina, and work their way north. 

The entire process is expected to take several weeks, as staffing is limited. 

Residents may also take their tree debris free of charge to the Salina Landfill, located at 4292 S. Burma Rd., from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Holiday hours will vary). Commercial customers will be charged $20 a ton for limb debris. 

The City noted in the release that it would like to thank those who are able to make arrangements to remove debris from their properties, and thanks everyone for their patience during this process.

The Salina Education Foundation is accepting applications for the Loan Initiative for Future Teachers (LIFT) Program.

The program rewards exemplary Saline County residents who want to become teachers. It provides up to $5,000 per year while the student works toward an initial teaching certificate, according to a news release from the foundation. The Salina Education Foundation forgives up to $5,000 of that loan for each year the new teacher is employed by USD 305.

Part of N. Ohio Street will be reduced to a single lane for about a month beginning next week so the City of Salina can replace a water main.

Beginning Tuesday, northbound N. Ohio Street will be limited to one lane between Johnstown Avenue and E. Elm Street. The right northbound lane will be closed so the city can replace a water main. 

Access to Poplar Street and E. Ash Street will be maintained. Work is expected to be complete by Dec. 30, weather permitting.

Motorists may encounter minor delays and are encouraged to find alternate routes.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m. Friday: The replacement of two cross-road drainage structures on E. Coronado Heights Road has been extended through Wednesday evening, Saline County Engineer Justin Mader announced this afternoon. Originally, the project was scheduled to be completed this evening.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced the closing of part of E. Coronado Heights Road for drainage work beginning Tuesday.

According to information released this afternoon, E. Coronado Heights Road between S. Kipp Road and S. Whitmore Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Tuesday for the replacement of two cross road drainage structures. The road is scheduled to be closed until Friday evening.  

Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.
