Salina Public Library: Summer schedule now available

On Monday, at approximately 4:24 p.m., officers of the Salina Police Department were sent to Planet Fitness, 2012 S. Ohio Street, regarding a stolen vehicle. 

The victim reported that while she was in the business, the her vehicle keys were stolen from the locker room, and an unknown subject stole her black 2017 Kia Forte from the parking lot. The victim’s financial cards were in the vehicle during the vehicle theft. The victim discovered one of her financial cards was used at a business in Salina. 

Surveillance video shows the female suspect was dropped off at Planet Fitness by a silver Honda Civic four-door. The Forte was recovered in Manhattan the following day.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about theft of vehicle from gym

Leah&nbsp;Jean-Lacher&nbsp;Reay touched many lives with her generosity and enthusiasm before her death in a crash with an intoxicated driver on Jan. 22, 2017. Join the Salina community in remembering Reay by donating blood at the annual American Red Cross blood drives held in her memory.

Reay, a 2013 Kansas Wesleyan University nursing science graduate, worked for the Salina Regional Health Center and served as a mentor for Salina youth before moving home to California in 2015. As a nurse and a regular blood donor, Reay also understood the importance of blood donation. &nbsp;

“I think these annual drives are such a meaningful way to remember Leah,” said Kevin Reay, her husband. “She was such a giving person.”&nbsp;

In addition to holding blood drives in Leah’s honor, her family has established a scholarship fund for nursing students at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.leahslegacyfoundation.org/" target="_blank">LeahsLegacyFoundation.org</a>. &nbsp;

Held since 2017, the Salina blood drives in memory of&nbsp;Leah&nbsp;Jean-Lacher&nbsp;Reay&nbsp;have collected around 200 total donations. The Red Cross Southern California Region also hosts a blood drive in Reay’s memory each year around her April 2 birthday. It regularly collects more than 70 donations.&nbsp;

The Red Cross&nbsp;is&nbsp;testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus. &nbsp;

Plasma from routine blood and platelet donations that have high levels of antibodies may be used as convalescent plasma to meet the needs of COVID-19 patients with weakened immune systems. Convalescent plasma is a type of blood product collected from COVID-19 survivors who have antibodies that may help patients who are actively fighting the virus. &nbsp;

The Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose illness, referred to as a diagnostic test. To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, it is important that individuals who do not feel well or believe they may be ill with COVID-19 postpone donation.&nbsp;

At a time when health information has never been more important, the Red Cross is also screening all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait. This additional screening will provide Black donors with an additional health insight and help the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help patients with sickle cell disease.&nbsp;Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fighting sickle cell disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Donors can expect to receive antibody test and sickle cell trait screening results, if applicable, within one to two weeks through the Red Cross Blood Donor App and the online donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. &nbsp;

Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.redcrossblood.org/donate-blood/dlp/coronavirus--covid-19--and-blood-donation.html" target="_blank">additional precautions&nbsp;</a>– including temperature checks and face masks for donors and staff – have been implemented to help protect the health of all those in attendance. With the wide variety of items available, chances are you'll find something you need or want at the upcoming Salina Regional Health Center Service Auxiliary Spring Sale.

Scheduled for April 29-May 2 in the 4-H Building in Kenwood Park, the annual event already has a multitude of items for sale, including "baby items, toys, lots of décor items, kitchen gadgets, lots of good clothing, books, CDs, and a lot of miscellaneous" items, Carol Brent, one of the event organizers, told Salina Post.

Proceeds from the sale help support the operation of the Rebecca A. Morrison House and go toward healthcare scholarships, she said.

May 1 1-5 p.m. This is a Bag Day. You can fill a paper grocery bag or recyclable cloth bag for $3 or $4.

May 2 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Also a Bag Day.

If you would like to donate items to the auxiliary sale, you may do so from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. April 27-28. Brent said that tax receipts are available for donated items. The group cannot accept tires, refrigerators, freezers, de-humidifiers, air conditioners, hazardous materials, or mattresses, she added.

Additionally, the auxiliary needs volunteers to help set up and tear down the sale. If you'd like to help, call Brent at 785-309-1999.

On Feb. 25, an individual reported to the Salina Police Department that they used his/her ATM card at Central National Bank at 2900 S. Ninth Street. The individual forgot the ATM card in the machine after using it. When the victim returned to retrieve their card, the card was gone. 

The victim discovered the financial card had been used at three businesses within Salina soon after the card was taken from the ATM machine.

Surveillance video from the businesses where the card was used showed a male subject making purchases with the stolen financial card.

Sometime between Feb. 23 and Feb. 24, unknown suspect(s) damaged a Bobcat T650 owned by Saline County Road and Bridge and stole the battery belonging to the Bobcat.

Total loss and damage is estimated to be in excess of $3,000.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about incident with Saline County Bobcat

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and the Tammy Walker Cancer Center in Salina wants to make sure that screening kits are available for those who want them.

Thanks to some generous donors, 800 free colorectal cancer screening kits are available for people ages 45 to 75 at all Salina and Lindsborg pharmacies while supplies last.

Colorectal cancer is the third-most common cancer found in both men and women. According to the National Cancer Institute, since the 1990s the rate of colorectal cancer has more than doubled among adults younger than age 50, Daniel Craig, cancer outreach coordinator for the Tammy Walker Cancer Center told Salina Post.

"On May 18, 2021, in response to the higher incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer in younger adults the United States Preventive Task Force released a final recommendation statement that screening for colorectal cancer be offered starting at age 45," Craig noted.

The good news is that if found early, colorectal cancer is often highly curable, thus the free colorectal cancer screening kits.

According to information from the Tammy Walker Cancer Center, the screening uses an advanced fecal blood test that requires a single sample and has no food or drug restrictions. The samples can then be mailed to the Tammy Walker Cancer Center for lab analysis via a pre-paid postage envelope provided by May 30. 

Results of the test will be returned to both patients and their primary care physicians.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions on entry at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center, officials ask that all tests be returned by mail.

"Regular colorectal cancer screening is one of the most powerful weapons against colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer screening tests can find precancerous polyps, so that they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening tests can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best," Craig. "The colonoscopy is the gold standard for preventing colorectal cancer. All men and women should have a colonoscopy at age 45 to screen for colorectal cancer. Those with a family history of the disease should talk to their physician about screening at a younger age."

The screening kits were made available, in part, thanks to grant funding from the Salina Charities League, Wilson Family Charitable Trust, and Salina Regional Health Foundation. Additional support for paid media was provided by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Cancer Program in support of the North Central Regional Coalition.

The scholarship was established in 2021 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of OCCK, Inc., as a long-term reminder of the good work that past generations have done, and that future generations will do, in working with people with disabilities in north-central Kansas. 

The More Than You Think Scholarship recognizes and honors students in north-central Kansas from Saline, Ottawa, Cloud, Republic, Jewell, Mitchell, Lincoln, Ellsworth, or Dickinson counties, who have a disability and are looking to further their education by enrolling in some type of post-secondary learning opportunity (college, university, community college, vocational school, cosmetology school, etc.)  Any type of credentialed program will be considered. 

To apply, applicants must complete the scholarship application and include two letters of reference. Applications are due May 2. Multiple winners may be selected in amounts up to $500 each.

Attention golfers: Have you registered yet for the Kansas JCI Foundation's four-person golf tournament?

Funds raised during the annual tournament on April 2 will be used to provide scholarships to high school seniors for college or trade school education. The goal for the 2022 tournament is to raise enough money to award at least five scholarships, according to information from the organization.

The tournament is scheduled for the Great Life Golf Course, 1800 S. Marymount Road. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided at approximately 1:30 p.m., with an awards program to follow at 2 p.m.

Early registration by March 20 is $300 per team. After March 20, the registration fee is $320.

There will be cash prizes for the top three teams: first place, $300; second place, $200; third place, $100. Additionally, there will be prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, and longest putt, ball toss and mulligans, and a 50/50 drawing.

For the past several years, the Kansas JCI Senate Foundation has worked to provide scholarships to high school seniors for college or trade school education. Criteria are based on academic performance as well as service to humanity in equal parts, according to information from the organization.

On Saturday, Feb. 19, Salina Police officers took several reports of a subject passing counterfeit bills at businesses in Salina. 

A total of seven businesses reported a female subject came into their businesses and passed a counterfeit $100 bill. Many of the businesses accepted the counterfeit bill(s) as legal tender. The subject was observed leaving some of the businesses in a vehicle, which was described as a silver four-door passenger car with an Arizona tag.

The subject was described as a white female between 20-30 years old, medium build with long dark hair.

A total of seven businesses reported a female subject came into their businesses and passed a counterfeit $100 bill. Many of the businesses accepted the counterfeit bill(s) as legal tender. The subject was observed leaving some of the businesses in a vehicle, which was described as a silver four-door passenger car with an Arizona tag.The subject was described as a white female between 20-30 years old, medium build with long dark hair.

UPDATE 4:30 p.m. Tuesday:&nbsp;Due to the weather, the start date on the bridge repair project below has been moved to March 2, according to information released this afternoon by the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Beginning Wednesday, the Kansas Department of Transportation is scheduled to repair four bridges along Interstate 135 in Saline County.

One of the bridges is located just south of Kansas Highway 140 (State Street exit) and three are located up to one mile north of K-140.

During the first phase of construction, the southbound I-135 ramp from K-140/State Street will be closed, traffic will follow a signed detour. Traffic on I-135 will be reduced to one 13.5-foot lane at a reduced speed through all four bridge repairs. 

Drivers should expect minimal delays, not exceeding five minutes.

APAC-Kansas Inc. of Hutchinson is the prime contractor for the $1.1 million bridge repair project, which is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2022, weather permitting.

Tickets are now on sale for Southeast of Saline's 10th annual Baseball Sausagefest.

10th annual Sausagefest to benefit SES baseball

As a local youth baseball coach, Jason Wells has seen families struggle to support their child’s love of the game, due to the rising cost of youth sports.

“Equipment, uniforms, league fees and tournament fees can make baseball an expensive youth sport,” said Wells. “Our team does whatever it can to keep costs reasonable, yet there has always been a significant fee per player to participate.”

This issue is not new. In 2000, longtime youth baseball coach Larry Britegam wanted to help families who struggle with the financial demands of organized sports, so he established the Youth Baseball Fund at the Greater Salina Community Foundation. This fund, along with the community foundation’s Sunflower Softball Fund, provides support for local youth who want to participate in baseball or softball but are limited by a lack of funds. Grants may be used to cover registration fees, tournament fees, equipment, uniforms, and clinics.

“This fund truly has an impact on the kids that love baseball and need some financial help to participate,” Wells said. “While most of these kids will never earn a baseball scholarship, they may create experiences and friendships they will remember the rest of their lives.”

Since the baseball and softball funds were started, 223 young baseball and softball players in the Salina area have received a combined total of $61,036.30.

“I would like to thank all those who put forth the time and money to keep this fund going,” Wells said. “Thanks for helping kids in Salina have an opportunity to be a part of these teams.”

This season, $10,000 is available for baseball and more than $2,500 is available for softball. Applications opened Feb. 1. Remaining deadlines to submit are March 15, April 15, and May 15. Funding will be awarded on a first come, first served basis and decisions will be announced after each grant deadline.

Students must fulfill academic requirements, and plan to attend an institution of higher education in the fall of 2022.

The City of Salina is giving plenty of notice for its upcoming electronic waste recycling event.

The annual event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 14 on the old runway at the Berkley Family Recreation Area along Markley Road. The city and American Recycling are hosting the event, according to information provided by the City of Salina.

Electronic equipment such as computers, televisions, cameras, gaming systems, keyboards, and microwaves that need to be discarded are among the items considered as ewaste.

Recycling electronic equipment not only preserves resources like aluminum, copper, gold, silver and ferrous metals; it potentially diverts toxic materials like mercury, lead, cadmium and flame retardants from the landfill. When electronic equipment is recycled, landfill space is also saved," the city noted in a news release.

While there are no limitations on the number of items that a person may recycle, there are some items that will not be accepted, including the following.

According to information from the city, fees will be collected for the following items.

Large appliances (stoves, furnaces, copiers, etc.): $25

Fees must be paid by cash, credit card, or check at the time of drop-off.

Persons wanting to drop off items are asked to enter the event area from Markley Road at the water tower, and then follow the traffic cones and signs to the drop-off location, according to the information from the city.

"Participants are asked to remain in their vehicles while staff members collect the e-waste. Once drop-off is complete, participants should exit onto Markley Road at Dean Evans Stadium," the city noted.

A local health and wellness coalition, Live Well Saline County, is doing a Community Food Survey to identify and develop solutions for the barriers to accessing food in Salina.&nbsp;

The information gathered in this survey will inform efforts&nbsp;to implement initiatives through&nbsp;Pathways to a Healthy Kansas, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas grant initiative.&nbsp;Through the Pathways Initiative Saline County has the opportunity to apply for non-competitive implementation grants of up to $100,000 to support Safe Routes to Food projects. 

The results from the Saline County Food Survey will help identify the Safe Routes to Food projects that Live Well Saline County will apply for grant funding to implement.

The survey is available in print as well as online.
