On Tuesday, officers of the Salina Police Department were sent to the Baymont Inn, 1740 W. Crawford Street, regarding a trailer and motorcycle theft. 

The victim reported that sometime overnight his black six-foot utility trailer containing two dirt bikes was stolen from the parking lot. The dirt bikes were a Blue Yamaha WR250 and a Red Honda 50. The value of the trailer and motorcycles is estimated to be $5000.

Surveillance video shows an older white model Chevrolet or GMC truck with a utility box arriving in the parking lot. A male with dark clothing and hat hooked up the trailer to the truck and left the hotel northbound on Beverly Drive.

Salina Area Technical College is accepting applications from individuals interested in serving on the college’s Board of Trustees.

The nine-member Board is the college’s governing body, and determines goals and direction for the institution. New Board members are appointed by the Board itself, and serve terms of three years, with terms starting on July 1.

The Board typically meets on the fourth Monday of the month, and occasionally has special meetings at other times.

Candidates should have experience in a business or education setting, especially one involving technical education in general or one of Salina Tech’s programs.

“This is a great time to get involved at Salina Tech,” said President Greg Nichols. “Over the past five years, we’ve been the fastest-growing college in Kansas. In addition, we’re constructing a new student center and launching a new Dental Hygiene program this fall.”

Application deadline is June 17, and the Board will consider the applications at its June 27 meeting.

On May 11, 2022, at 1:27 a.m., officers responded to a business alarm at Nex-Tech Wireless, 2525 Market Place, Suite B, in Salina. Officers discovered the rear door to the business had been damaged enabling entry into the building. 

An inventory of products revealed various phone accessories were taken. The total value of the stolen property is estimated to be more than $500.

A similar burglary was reported to have occurred on the same night at the Nex-Tech Wireless in Hutchinson. Surveillance video from both businesses showed the same two suspects committing the burglaries.

CAPS offering four classes this summer; registration open

The City of Salina has announced that it will begin flushing water lines and hydrants later this month.

The annual water line free chlorine flushing is scheduled for Wednesday through July 11.

"To maintain high water quality in the city’s water distribution system and Saline County RWD No. 3, the Utilities Department will temporarily modify the disinfection process used to treat our drinking water. This is a preventative maintenance process and consists of turning off the ammonia feed and increasing the free chlorine feed in order to maintain a more uniform disinfection level throughout the city’s water distribution system and Saline County RWD No. 3," the city noted in a news release.

The city cautioned that during the flushing period, water customers may notice a strong chlorine taste or odor in the water.

"These temporary conditions are normal during the modified disinfection process and will not cause adverse health effects. If you are especially sensitive to the taste or odor of chlorine, keep an open container of drinking water in your refrigerator for a few hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate," the news release noted.

The city urged "users of home dialysis machines, owners of tropical fish and managers of stores and restaurants with fish and shellfish holding tanks to seek professional advice as the method for removing free chlorine residuals differs from removing chloramine residuals from tap water."

Additionally, the city plans to conduct its annual fire hydrant flushing during the chlorine flushing of the water lines. This is a preventive maintenance measure.

"Flushing the water distribution system achieves three objectives: helps to keep the interior of the water lines clean (removes sediment); helps maintain good quality water in the water distribution system; and provides an opportunity to check the operation of all fire hydrants. The water is safe to drink but may cause staining of laundry," the city noted.

City water customers are encouraged to avoid doing laundry if the water is discolored due to fire hydrants being flushed in their areas.

The annual fire hydrant flushing is scheduled for May 31-July 5. Following is a map of when fire hydrants are scheduled to be flushed in each part of the city.

OCCK, Inc. has announced the extension of the deadline for applications for its More Than You Think Scholarship for 2022 to June 15, 2022.

The scholarship was established in 2021 as part of the 50th&nbsp;Anniversary celebration of OCCK, as a long-term reminder of the good work that past generations have done, and that future generations will do, in working with people with disabilities in north central Kansas.&nbsp;

The More Than You Think Scholarship recognizes and honors students in north central Kansas from Saline, Ottawa, Cloud, Republic, Jewell, Mitchell, Lincoln, Ellsworth, or Dickinson Counties, who have any type of disability and are looking to further their education by enrolling in some type of post-secondary learning opportunity (college, university, community college, vocational school, cosmetology school, etc.)&nbsp; Any type of credentialed program will be considered.&nbsp;

To apply, applicants must complete the Scholarship Application, and include two letters of reference.&nbsp; Applications are due June 15, 2022. Multiple winners may be selected in amounts up to $500 each.

The contractor on the Simpson Road Project has elected to begin work tomorrow May 6. Simpson Road between Magnolia Road and Crawford Street will now be closed to traffic starting Friday May 6 for a road improvement project. Simpson Road will not be accessible from either Magnolia Road nor Cloud Street during the project. Emergency and local traffic will be allowed access to properties who’s access is on Simpson Road between Magnolia Road and Crawford Street from the Crawford Street intersection only. Through traffic is asked to find alternate routes.

OCCK and its Solution Outreach Center have scheduled the second annual&nbsp;Durable&nbsp;Medical Equipment Recycling Week.

The collection event is scheduled to begin Monday and last until May 11.

OCCK urgently needs hospital beds, scooters, bedside commodes, bath transfer benches, walkers, and patient lifts. All donations will be sanitized and repurposed for children and adults with mobility needs.

 Anyone from Saline, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Ottawa, Cloud, Jewell, Republic, Dickinson, and Mitchell counties with used&nbsp;durable&nbsp;medical equipment that they would like to donate may call 785-827-9383 and request a pick-up or drop-off appointment.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Last year's event produced 45 donated pieces of medical equipment. In 2021, OCCK provided 176 pieces of donated medical equipment to help children and adults with mobility needs.

Salina Public Library collecting school supplies for USD 305

The American Red Cross, Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice and Suburban Propane have joined together to encourage communities to commit to a simple act with a powerful impact – giving blood or platelets for patients in need.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This spring, it’s critically important the Red Cross maintains a readily available blood supply for those who rely on transfusions for treatment. Since donated blood has a limited shelf life, supplies must be constantly replenished to ensure a sufficient inventory of blood products. With no substitution for blood and no way to manufacture it, volunteer donors are the only source of blood products for patients with sickle cell disease, car accident victims and parents experiencing difficult childbirths.&nbsp;

As a blood donor himself, Jerry Rice urges individuals to roll up a sleeve and take pride in the lifesaving impact they’re making. “Here’s your chance to make a difference,” said Rice. “You never know who you might be helping. It could be a friend or family member who needs blood – and that’s why it’s so important.”&nbsp;

As a thank-you, Suburban Propane is fueling a lifetime of road-tripping memories with a special opportunity for donors who answer the call to give power to patients. The Saline County Sheriff's Office will join hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the country Saturday for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's 22nd National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

According to Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski, sheriff's office personnel will be joined by representatives from Interim Healthcare and Hospice for the collection, which is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Salina Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth Street.

The bi-annual event offers free, anonymous disposal of unneeded medications.

“Disposing of unneeded medications can help prevent drugs from being misused,” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram. “Overdose deaths continue to hit tragic record highs. I encourage everyone to dispose of unneeded prescription medications now.”

For more than a decade, DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications—those that are old, unwanted, or no longer needed—that too often become a gateway to addiction. Working in close partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed more than 15 million pounds of medication from circulation since its inception. These efforts are directly in line with DEA’s priority to combat the overdose epidemic in the United States.

Drug overdose deaths are up 16 percent in the last year, claiming more than 290 lives every day, the DEA noted.  According to a report published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a majority of people who misused a prescription medication obtained the medicine from a family member or friend.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in the United States, more than 106,000 people died as the result of a drug overdose in the 12-month period ending November 2021, marking the most drug-related deaths ever recorded, with opioid-related deaths accounting for 75 percent of all overdose deaths.

If you can't make it to the collection event on Saturday, you can drop off unneeded medications in lobby of the sheriff's office during the office's regular business hours. Additionally, you can drop them off on the weekends at the Saline County Jail visitation window.

The City of Salina has announced street crack sealing work for the upcoming week.

Monday through Friday, Circle C Construction of Goddard will seal cracks on the following streets, weather permitting.

The work will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

This $288,000 project is part of the City's $4.7 million 2022 street maintenance program.
