The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Winter Storm Warning, now in effect until 3 a.m. Sunday, followed by a Blizzard Warning from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Winter Storm Warning includes heavy mixed precipitation, with sleet accumulations of about one-third of an inch and ice accumulations of up to four-tenths of an inch. Winds may gust up to 35 mph. The Blizzard Warning brings expected blizzard conditions, with total snow accumulations ranging from 2 to 6 inches south of US-50 and 6 to 14 inches along and north of US-50. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph, leading to significantly reduced visibility.

This warning covers portions of central, south-central, and southeast Kansas, including Saline County and the cities of Salina, Hutchinson, McPherson, Wichita, and surrounding areas.

Expected impacts include power outages and tree damage due to ice accumulation. Travel conditions may become nearly impossible, and widespread blowing snow could reduce visibility. Strong winds may also cause downed tree branches.

Travel should be limited to emergencies. If you must travel, ensure you have a winter survival kit and stay with your vehicle if stranded. Carry an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. For up-to-date road conditions, call 511.

Mid-November marks the peak of the deer rut season, a time when deer are more active as they search for mates, increasing the likelihood of vehicle collisions. Since November 11, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office has responded to 11 deer-related crashes, with only one resulting in minor injuries, according to Saline County Sheriff's Office Operations Captain Jim Hughes.

It is important not to swerve to avoid hitting a deer, as that can result in a more serious crash, potentially involving other vehicles or objects off the road.

Drivers are advised to reduce speed in areas where deer are commonly seen, especially at dawn and dusk, and to use high beams when appropriate to improve visibility.

Always wear your seatbelt and ensure children are in appropriate safety seats. Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic, and scan for the reflective eyes of deer along the roadway.

The Salina League of Women Voters held its 2024 General Election Forum on Oct. 20 at 1:30 in the Watson Room at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Kansas Highway Patrol It’s a busy time for farmers in Kansas with fall harvest underway. The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to use more caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines, and other implements.

“As the busy farming season is underway, each traveler in Kansas needs to be more aware of increased farm implement and truck traffic,” said Captain Candice Breshears. “In Kansas, we have many trucks exiting and entering the roadways at any given time. Traveling around these vehicles requires extra caution.”

Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than the lane of traffic, so extra room should be allowed when sharing the road. Caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on busy rural roads with unmarked intersections.

Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re there.

Although most farmers regularly check for vehicles behind them, the majority of their focus must be spent looking ahead to stay on the road and watch for oncoming traffic. Implements are very loud, hindering their ability to hear your vehicle.

Don’t pass unless you can see clearly ahead of both your vehicle and the equipment you are passing. If there are curves or hills blocking your view, wait until you can clearly visualize the area you are passing in. You should not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone,” even if you are stuck behind a farm vehicle. Do not pass if you are within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel.

When a farm vehicle pulls to the right side of the road, it does not mean it is turning right or allowing you to pass.

Due to the size of some farm equipment, the farmer must execute wide left turns, so allow it plenty of room and time to turn and remain aware of any potential driveway or field they may be turning into.

Don’t assume that a farmer can move aside to let you pass. Shoulders may be soft, wet, or steep, which can cause the farm vehicle to tip, or the shoulder may not support the weight of a heavy farm vehicle. They understand you are being delayed and will move over at the first safe location available.

Think of the slow-moving vehicle emblem as a warning to adjust your speed.

When you see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, immediately slow down. While the emblems are visible from a long distance, it is difficult to judge the speed at which you are closing in on the vehicle, especially at night.

When you are not focused solely on the road, you increase your chances of a collision, especially if you should come upon a slow-moving farm vehicle.

KHP: Extra caution needed on Kansas roads during harvest

SALINE COUNTY—First responders are busy working accident across the state due to the winter storm.

On Saturday afternoon, the KHP worked an accident on Interstate 70 at the Salina exit, according to Trooper Ben Gardner. The exit ramp remains closed due to ice. "Every time we try moving vehicles, they slide into each other," according to Gardner.

"While we’re working to reopen this exit, other serious calls are coming in, so tow services are being rerouted to higher-priority incidents.

" If you can, please stay home. The roads are slick, and unnecessary travel puts everyone at risk."

3p.m. Update: I-70 has been reopened in Ellsworth County

SALINE COUNTY —&nbsp; Interstate 70 in Ellsworth Co. from mm 224-230 is temporarily closed due to crashes. Give crews room to work, allow extra distance between other vehicles on the road and plan extra travel time.

The region including Saline County and surrounding counties, are currently experiencing a significant number of crashes. The most challenging conditions are on Interstate 70 in Ellsworth and Russell Counties, where multiple slide-offs, rollovers, and both non-injury and injury accidents have occurred, according to a social media report from Trooper Ben Gardner.

These incidents include passenger cars, semi-truck rollovers, and even a fire truck that rolled over—thankfully, the first responders are okay.



The roadways are completely ice-covered. Motorists need to slow down significantly if you must travel. Ideally, stay home and avoid driving until conditions improve.

The Salina Police Department has activated its Emergency Accident Reporting Plan.

The agency says due to hazardous driving conditions the number of motor vehicle accidents exceeds the department’s ability to respond in a timely manner.

Any non-hit and run, non-personal injury motor vehicle accident that does not require towing, and does not involve alcohol or drugs.

Exchange personal information with the other driver(s) involved or property owner.

Complete an Emergency Accident Reporting Plan accident report form as completely as possible and mail or deliver the completed report to the Salina Police Department within 48 hours.

Emergency Accident Reporting Plan forms are available at the Salina Police Department. They are also available on-line at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina-ks.gov/">https://www.salina-ks.gov</a>/police by selecting the Emergency Accident Report Form.

SPD enacts emergency accident reporting plan

MCPHERSON COUNTY —Four people died in an accident just before 12:30a.m. Saturday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Honda CRV driven by&nbsp;Jacob F. Aich, 36, Hutchinson was traveling&nbsp;southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 135 two miles south of Kansas 4 Highway.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The SUV struck a 2013 Toyota Rav4 driven by Lydia P.&nbsp;Barton, 31, Wichita, head-on in the passing lane. 

Aich, Barton and two passengers in the Toyota, a 13-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy both of Monument, Colorado were pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the Toyota were transported to Sedgwick County Forensic Science. Aich was transported to Frontier Forensics.

EMS transported a passenger in the Honda Kirkland A.&nbsp;Byers, 29, Hutchinson, to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment of serious injuries. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Jan. 4

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the season’s first accumulating ice and snow forecast to impact much of the Sunflower State this weekend, AAA Kansas is urging drivers to be prepared for the conditions.

"We're just wanting to remind drivers to be prepared," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "First and foremost, if you don't have to be out driving in the height of the winter storm, just stay home. That's the safest, for sure. If you do have to be out in it, just refamiliarize yourself with driving on snow and ice. Take everything slower. Be much more deliberate. Leave plenty of extra space for turns and stops and pretty much everything as you are driving."

AAA Kansas anticipates an increase in emergency roadside service calls as the wintry weather sweeps through and road conditions deteriorate, with slide-offs and crashes due to slick roads, battery/non-start problems and flat tires the main culprits.

"Tires and batteries are among the most common reasons why our AAA emergency roadside service crews get called for service," Steward said. "If you can, get your battery in and checked out by a professional, to make sure that it's strong enough to face this cold weather, not only for this weekend, but throughout the winter. We'll likely get much colder throughout the winter. Get your battery in and get it checked. The typical life span of a car battery is about three to five years."

AAA members can request a visit from a AAA mobile battery service technician who will test their battery and replace it on-site, if necessary. Also, keep your gas tank at least half-full to avoid gas line freeze-up. Use your mobile devices when you are stopped to give you the best idea of how things are where you are going.

"It's important to stay up on road and weather conditions," Steward said. "KDOT has their <a href="https://www.kandrive.gov/@-99.86957,38.77164,7?show=roadReports,constructionReports,trafficSpeeds,winterDriving,oversizeLoads,stationsAlert,weatherRadar">KanDrive site</a>, or they also have a mobile app with that same information. We also recommend loading a good weather app with live radar, so you can keep up with where the storm is in relationship to where you are headed and hopefully avoid the worst of the storm."

Hazardous storms and inclement weather are a factor in an average of nearly half a million crashes and more than 2,200 traffic crash deaths nationwide every winter, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Gregory L White, 56, Camdenton, Mississippi, was eastbound in the left lane of westbound Interstate 70 eight miles west of Salina.

The car struck a westbound 2018 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Kilee R. Adams, 19, Seaford, Virgina, head-on.

EMS transported Adams and a passenger in the Nissan Sophia J. Cannon, 20, Yorktown, Virginia, to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; White was not transported for treatment of minor injury.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cannon was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– With a winter storm forcing the adjustment of the game time, (12/11) K-State used a tempest of steals, made field goals and free throws in the third quarter to secure a 77-57 win on Saturday afternoon against Texas Tech at Bramlage Coliseum.

The win improves K-State’s win streak to 10. This is the first time since the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons that the Wildcats have registered double-digit win streaks in consecutive seasons.

K-State improved its overall record to 15-1 for the second time under the direction of head coach Jeff Mittie. This is the second straight season K-State has opened with a 15-1 record. In its history, K-State has opened a season 15-1 or better five times.

The Wildcats saw four players reach double figures on Saturday, led by All-America candidate Ayoka Lee with 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting, eight rebounds, a block and a steal. With her 19 points, Lee improved her career total to 2,436 and passed Nina Davis of Baylor (2014-17) for seventh on the Big 12 career scoring list.

With her eight rebounds, Lee moved into sixth on the Big 12 career rebounds list (1,211) and passed Iowa State’s Angie Welle (1999-02; 1,209).

Senior guard and All-America candidate Serena Sundell recorded her team-best fifth double-double of the season with 13 points, 11 assists, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

Lee and Sundell have now reached double figures in points in the same game in 44 of 73 career games together.

The bench tandem of senior forward Kennedy Taylor and Taryn Sides added 13 and 11 points, respectively. The duo helped the Wildcats to a 30-15 advantage in bench points on Saturday.

- With the game time moved ahead three hours to avoid a larger issue with an incoming winter storm, K-State (15-1, 3-0 Big 12) held a 38-32 lead at halftime and shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field and registered 13 assists on its 15 made field goals in the first half.

- K-State used a 24-4 run in the first eight minutes of the third quarter and built a 62-36 lead with 2:10 to play in the frame. During the squall, the Wildcats received points from six different players led by six from Taylor.

- The Wildcats would win the third quarter, 28-9, and hold Texas Tech (12-4, 1-2) to 14.3 percent shooting (2-of-14). K-State would register eight steals which led to a 17-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the third quarter. The Wildcats shot 56.3 percent (9-of-16) in the frame and handed out eight assists on the nine made field goals.

- K-State shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) for the afternoon, which included a 44-26 edge in points in the paint, and a 76.2 percent (16-of-21) effort from the free throw line. The Wildcats dished out 25 assists on its 29 made field goals. This was the seventh time this season K-State has handed out 25 or more assists in a game.

- K-State forced the Lady Raiders into 24 turnovers, 16 by way of a steal, which resulted in a 29-19 advantage in points off turnovers.

- Texas Tech shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field and were held to 14.3 percent (3-of-21) from beyond the arc.

- K-State leads the series with Texas Tech, 31-17. Head coach Jeff Mittie is 21-8 (.724) in his career against Texas Tech.

- The Wildcats are 235-242 (.493) in Big 12 games.

She owns 111 career games with five or more rebounds.

- Lee registered a block on Saturday and boosted her career total to 340. Lee is fourth in Big 12 history for career blocks.

- Sundell notched her 83rd career game with 10 or more points. Sundell owns 1,464 career points and remains in 14th&nbsp;on the K-State career scoring list.

- Sundell made nine free throws, on 10 attempts, on Saturday. This was a season-high for free throws made by a Wildcat this season. This was her fifth game this season and her fourth straight with five or more made free throws.

- Sundell’s 11 assists on Saturday improved her career total to 668. This was her ninth career game&nbsp; and her fifth this season with 10 or more assists. This was her 78th career game with five or more assists and her 13th&nbsp;this season including her 10th&nbsp;straight.

- Sundell hauled in three rebounds on Saturday to improve her career total to 493.
