SALINE COUNTY —Two people from Salina were jailed after a pursuit on Interstate 135 Wednesday.

Just after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, detectives from McPherson County and troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol contacted Salina police that they were in unmarked vehicles and following a vehicle into Saline County on Interstate 135, according to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus.

A person in the suspect vehicle had active warrants and was wanted in an active investigation in McPherson County concerning a possible missing person.

With the assistance of McPherson County deputies and the KHP, Salina police stopped the suspect vehicle between the W. Magnolia Road and W. Crawford Street exits.

Officers arrested a passenger in the vehicle, identified as Eric A. Goldberg, 44, of Salina on an active Salina County District Court warrant for probation violation. 

He also was arrested on requested charges of possession of a stimulant, possession of drug paraphernalia, and no drug tax stamp.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, the Kansas Highway Patrol had arrested Goldberg on requested charges of possession of meth, use and possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body, driving while license suspended or revoked and no vehicle liability insurance. He was booked into the McPherson County Jail just before 12:30 p.m. and released just before 3 p.m., according to online jail records. He remains in custody in Saline County.

Officers also arrested the&nbsp;driver of the vehicle identified as Amanda L. Gawith, 45, of Salina, on requested charges of driving while suspended and driving while a habitual violator. She is no longer in custody.

Salina man just out of jail arrested after unmarked pursuit

It’s a long-standing idea that public education works best when parents and teachers work together. The national Parent Teacher Association is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. However, at least since the COVID pandemic broke out two years ago, there has been growing debate over how much influence each group should have in setting educational policies.

That debate has also become very political. Teacher’s associations or unions have become strongly associated with Democrats and many Republicans are claiming to be, or want to be, the “parents party.” However, new opinion polls suggest the public really wants to see parents and teachers working together within the public system.

Several opinion polls this summer show teachers as individuals enjoy the highest levels of trust and confidence of any group making education policies that are surveyed. A poll done for&nbsp;<a href="http://dfer.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Baseline-Nationwide-BG-Education-Summer-2022-.pdf">Democratic for Education Reform&nbsp;</a>found 73 percent of respondents have a very or somewhat favorable view of teachers. The&nbsp;<a href="https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/22086577/education-poll.pdf">American Federation of Teachers poll&nbsp;</a>also found the highest level of “confidence” in teachers, with 62 percent having a great deal or fair amount of confidence. (Both polls showed the teachers’ unions or associations polled 20-30 points lower than individual teachers; neither polled about school boards or administrators.) Those numbers are much higher than confidence in the public education system. An annual Gallup poll found only 28 percent of Americans have a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in public education.

However, the DFER poll and another survey for the AFT also showed strong support for parents’ voices in education. Parents organizations also had the confidence of a majority (56 percent), which was higher than teachers' unions, governors and legislators, and politicians. The AFT polls found 50 percent of respondents are dissatisfied with the amount of say that parents have in what their children are taught, with 38 percent satisfied.

The AFT poll asked a series of questions whether certain positions would make it more likely or less likely the voter would support a candidate. On the Republicans, the biggest positive differential for Republican candidates was “Believes parents should have more say over what their children learn in school” (33 percent more likely). When the AFT poll asked respondents to choose whether (1) parents should have more say in what their children are taught, or (2) teachers and professionals should determine curriculum, a narrow majority sided with parents.

At the same time, these new polls suggest that the public really would like to see parents and teachers working together. In the AFT poll, when asked if educators should set curriculum with input from parents, a much larger majority agreed more that teachers should set curriculum with parent input than simply parents having more say. For Democratic candidates, the AFT found the third largest positive differential is for a candidate who “Says that teachers and parents should work together to help students succeed, and we shouldn’t let politicians divide us” (plus 70 percent).

In fact, both polls showed frustration over political divisiveness. The AFT poll reported the biggest problem identified for public education is that “Education has become too politicized.” The poll found that 81 percent believe the politicization of education is a big problem. A plurality, 36 percent, say both parties are equally to blame, and slightly more blame “Democrats and liberals” (33 percent) than “Republicans and conservatives “(28 percent). The DFER poll also indicates frustration with both political parties. By two-to-one, respondents say catching kids up in school after the pandemic is more important than addressing how race and gender are taught in schools, but 54 percent say Democrats and 48 percent say Republicans are more focused on race and gender instruction than helping kids recover.

While these polls indicate considerable support for more parental input, there are warnings against going too far. The AFT poll found respondents said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who would prohibit or prosecute teachers for certain kinds of instruction or allow parents to have books they consider offensive removed from school libraries. The AFT poll also found that respondents were generally more concerned about book bans and censorship than that some students would be taught something their parents will find offensive or inappropriate.

Finally, the DFER poll found 45 percent of voters would be much less likely to vote for a Republican who would supporting book bans, censoring teachers or penalizing teachers for talking about certain subjects, while 26 percent would be more likely.

These polls suggest the public wants a strong voice for parents but wants its structured so that parents and teachers work together. That may create an opportunity at the local level to develop and showcase models of cooperation.

Kansas teachers have certain rights for input on school districts policies regarding their employment and compensation through collective bargaining laws. Under state law, parents and teachers are to be represented on school building site councils, which are advisory bodies for local school boards. Many districts already use committees of parents, teachers and other educators to consider curriculum, challenges to library books and materials and other policies.

Local school boards, elected by communities that include parents and other family members, can demonstrate ways to strengthen parental input in collaboration with teachers. Rather than legislation that appears to create more conflict, perhaps school leaders can develop proposals to ensure all parties have a voice and allow the elected local school board to balance those concerns.

TALLMAN: Polls support parents, teachers working together

Today is Thursday, Sept. 1, the 244th day of 2022. There are 121 days left in the year.

On Sept. 1, 1983, 269 people were killed when a Korean Air Lines Boeing 747 was shot down by a Soviet jet fighter after the airliner entered Soviet airspace.

The mayor of Houston announced that ongoing releases of water from two swollen reservoirs could keep thousands of homes flooded for up to 15 days. Comedian Shelley Berman died at his California home at the age of 92.

One year ago: Relentless rain from the remnants of Hurricane Ida sent the New York City area into a state of emergency, as water poured into homes and subway stations and left vehicles nearly submerged on major roadways, the storm would leave nearly 50 people dead in six Eastern states. Three days after Ida battered Louisiana and parts of Mississippi as the fifth-most-powerful hurricane to strike the U.S., about a million homes and businesses still had no electricity, and hundreds of thousands of people lacked running water. The athletic accomplishments coming out of Claflin from 1994 to 1997 remain unmatched in the state history books. In that stretch, Jackie Stiles set single game, season, and career basketball scoring records that stand to this day. On the track, her 14 individual gold medals remain an all-time best in Kansas.

In 2002, Stiles' rise to the WNBA was detailed in a children's book called "Jackie Stiles: Gym Dandy." Earlier this year, actor, director and filmmaker Brent Huff took the story of her life a step farther. On March 1, his documentary "The Jackie Stiles Story" premiered in Springfield, Mo., where Stiles once set the NCAA scoring record for the Southwest Missouri State-turned Missouri State Bears. As of Aug. 30, the film is available on several streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime and Apple TV.

Stiles first heard from Huff out of the blue approximately three years ago. She was skeptical about the project at first.

"He sent me some things he'd done," Stiles said. "He'd done a 30-for-30 and I was very impressed. Then when he came and did his first interview with me, which was in Springfield, I was just getting ready to leave my job at Missouri State to take my job at Oklahoma, so it was a crazy time. We sat down and did our first interview. I knew right away my story was in good hands because he knew more about my life than I even knew."

Stiles helped Huff get in touch with former coaches and acquaintances, including Clint Kinnamon, who coached Stiles for three varsity seasons in Claflin before going on to win several state titles at St. John, and Gregg Webb, Stiles' coach her senior season.

The film features many of the stories that gave Stiles legend-status in the sports world, and it features footage of her years in Claflin, Missouri, and playing for the WNBA's Portland Fire.

"It was so fun being a part of the making of the film because I got to relive so many of those memories," she said. "It actually premiered March 1, and that was actually when I broke the record a lot of years ago. I had not seen it yet. He wanted to surprise me, so I got to see it when the public saw it in Springfield. Talk about nerve wracking to watch your life on the big screen.

"I was blown away by his work and it was fun reliving those memories. It was just an incredible moment getting to share it with so many people that made it possible. You don't accomplish something like that unless you had incredible people surrounding you, and I've been fortunate to have that my whole career."

Stiles became the first NCAA Div. I women's player to reach 1,000 points in a single season, also setting the career scoring record with 3,393 points, a record that stood for 16 years. Stiles later earned WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.

In that stretch, Jackie Stiles set single game, season, and career basketball scoring records that stand to this day. On the track, her 14 individual gold medals remain an all-time best in Kansas.In 2002, Stiles' rise to the WNBA was detailed in a children's book called "Jackie Stiles: Gym Dandy." Earlier this year, actor, director and filmmaker Brent Huff took the story of her life a step farther. On March 1, his documentary "The Jackie Stiles Story" premiered in Springfield, Mo., where Stiles once set the NCAA scoring record for the Southwest Missouri State-turned Missouri State Bears. As of Aug. 30, the film is available on several streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime and Apple TV.Stiles first heard from Huff out of the blue approximately three years ago. She was skeptical about the project at first."He sent me some things he'd done," Stiles said. "He'd done a 30-for-30 and I was very impressed. Then when he came and did his first interview with me, which was in Springfield, I was just getting ready to leave my job at Missouri State to take my job at Oklahoma, so it was a crazy time. We sat down and did our first interview. I knew right away my story was in good hands because he knew more about my life than I even knew."Stiles helped Huff get in touch with former coaches and acquaintances, including Clint Kinnamon, who coached Stiles for three varsity seasons in Claflin before going on to win several state titles at St. John, and Gregg Webb, Stiles' coach her senior season.The film features many of the stories that gave Stiles legend-status in the sports world, and it features footage of her years in Claflin, Missouri, and playing for the WNBA's Portland Fire."It was so fun being a part of the making of the film because I got to relive so many of those memories," she said. "It actually premiered March 1, and that was actually when I broke the record a lot of years ago. I had not seen it yet. He wanted to surprise me, so I got to see it when the public saw it in Springfield. Talk about nerve wracking to watch your life on the big screen."I was blown away by his work and it was fun reliving those memories. It was just an incredible moment getting to share it with so many people that made it possible. You don't accomplish something like that unless you had incredible people surrounding you, and I've been fortunate to have that my whole career."Stiles became the first NCAA Div. I women's player to reach 1,000 points in a single season, also setting the career scoring record with 3,393 points, a record that stood for 16 years. Stiles later earned WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.

Elinor’s life began on November 15, 1931, in Herington, KS, where she was born on the family farm. She was the daughter of Peter and Clara (Schaaf) Diepenbrock, and the youngest of four siblings. Elinor and her siblings were second generation Americans. 

Growing up, Elinor was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Herington, Kansas and a member of St. Paul’s Luther League chapter and performed in the church choir. &nbsp;

Elinor was a 1949 graduate of Herington High School where she was the class salutatorian. She went on to graduate with a clerical degree from Wichita Business College. 

After college, Elinor worked at First National Bank in Herington. During this period of her life, Elinor travelled extensively. She even took an extended trip to Alaska. 

Elinor married Lee Wayne Remy on February 9, 1958, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Herington, KS. Together they owned and operated the Herington Livestock Auction and Sale Barn where Elinor was the bookkeeper. Additionally, Elinor served as bookkeeper for Town and Country Real Estate and cashier for Remy Auction.

In her free time, Elinor also was an avid gardener, tending her vegetables daily. Elinor was a long-time community leader of the Burdick Hustlers 4-H Club. Since her marriage to Lee, Elinor was an active member of Hebron Lutheran Church of rural Burdick.&nbsp; She also enjoyed watching college basketball and had a strong love for music. Most of all, Elinor loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

Elinor Remy, at the age of 90, passed away in Herington, KS. 

She is survived by her children Tim (Heather) Remy of Hudsonville, MI; Tom (Lynley) Remy of Burdick, KS; Jan (Chuck) Creger of Ridgedale, MO; grandchildren Cydney (Mike) Sheneman of Zeeland, MI, MI; Taylor Remy of San Antonio, TX; Tanner (Lisi) Remy of Grand Rapids, MI; Corry Remy of Hudsonville, MI; Tad (Kathleen) Remy of Larned, KS; Tye Remy of Burdick, KS; Katie (Matt) Haverkamp, of Bern, KS; Caleb Creger of Ridgedale, MO; Jacob Creger of Ridgedale, MO; stepgrandchildren Logan Creger, of Springfield, MO; Alexa Creger of Los Angeles, CA; great-grandchildren Remy, Ruby, Otto, Hannah Jo, Landon, Avery, and the newest baby girl. 

She is preceded in death by her husband Lee Remy; parents Peter and Clara Diepenbrock; siblings Milton Diepenbrock, Harold Diepenbrock, and Clarine Diepenbrock Jones.

Funeral service for Elinor will be held Sunday, September 04, 2022, 2:00 p.m. at Hebron Lutheran Church, Burdick, KS.

Trefflia “Treff” Paul Alexander, age 39, entered into rest on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, Kansas. He was born on April 9, 1983 in Concordia, Kansas to Dennis and Patricia (Tate) Alexander.

Treff was a 2001 graduate of Miltonvale High School, Miltonvale, Kansas.&nbsp; He earned his LPN degree from NCKAVTS Beloit Campus, Beloit, Kansas and later graduated from Cloud County Community College with his RN degree.&nbsp;

On February 9, 2008 he married Brynn Cairns in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; To this union five children were born, Justice, Russell, Isabelle, Scarlett, and Asher.&nbsp; They later divorced.

Treff worked as a RN at the Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia.

He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Clifton, Kansas.

Treff’s hobbies include all kinds of comics, magic cards and most of all, spending time with his children attending all their activities and sporting events.

Survivors include his five children, Justice, Russell, Isabelle, Scarlett, and Asher Alexander, and the kid’s mother, Brynn Alexander, all of Concordia, KS; mother and stepfather Patricia and Sylvester Bosserman, Junction City, KS; father and stepmother Dennis and Carol Alexander, Clifton, KS; grandmother Rita Alexander, Clifton, KS; sister Becky Lapolice, Honolulu, HI; brother Alan (Sonia) Lapolice, San Francisco, CA; sister Cindy Bell (David), La Crescenta, CA;&nbsp; sister Jody Lapolice, Concordia, KS; sister Denise Alexander, Clyde, KS; brother Brett Alexander, Lee Summitt, MO; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Clinton and Phyllis Tate and paternal grandfather Lawrence “Bus” Alexander.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life service will be held on, Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, Kansas with Fr. Steven Heina officiating. Burial of cremains will take place in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; Friends may sign the register book from 1-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022 with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Roger Anschutz, age 79, of Hays, 
Kansas, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2022, in Hays. He was born 
January 7, 1943, in Russell, Kansas, to Henry Anschutz and Edna (Wittman) 
Anschutz. During the Bolsheviks Revolution, Roger’s dad, Henry, traveled 
with family from Russia through Poland to Germany. They departed for 
America from Frankfurt, Germany, on board the Sierra Ventana. They arrived
 at Ellis Island on August 15, 1924. Henry talked about working and 
living in Chicago for a period and eventually the family mostly settled 
in the Dorrance, Bunker Hill, Wilson area. He married Cynthia Werth on 
August 20, 1971, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays.

He attended Navy Hospital CORSP School 
and Hospital Medical Service School, stationed on a hospital Navy ship 
in Sigonella Sicily during the Vietnam War.

He attended Fort Hays State University 
and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. He worked for many
 years at Hadley Regional Medical Center, now Hays Medical Center in 
various positions including Hospital OR Nursing Scrub Tech, Circulating 
Nurse, OR Supervisor and later Supervisor of Outpatient Surgical 
Services.&nbsp;

Roger enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing, golfing, bird watching, but mostly spending time with his children and grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia, 
daughters; Sarah Nicks (Tim), Melissa Donaldson (Brent), son, Creighton 
Anschutz, Grandchildren; Tanner Nicks (Haley), Cole Nicks, Meyer 
Donaldson, Averine Donaldson; Great Grandchildren; Layden and Reign 
Nicks, and a brother, Ronald Anschutz (Pam). He was preceded in death by

BUTLER COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a weekend homicide have identified the victim as 81-year-old Marlyn Valeta Harvey of Andover, according to Police Captain Ben Graber.

Just before 4p.m. Sunday, police responded to the report of an assault at the Summerfield Senior&nbsp;Residences, 420 Lioba Drive.&nbsp;

EMS transported Harvey to an area hospital where she died.&nbsp;

Investigators learned Harvey had picked up her 23-year-old great-grandson Tristan Weir who was released from jail and brought him to her apartment

Following another successful season that saw a girl’s state championship and a boy's runner-up finish, the Southeast of Saline Cross Country dynasty is retooled and ready to go for 2022.

“The kids have come into the season excited and most of them put in some really good miles over the summer,” SES head coach Wade Caselman said. “We ran at 6:15 in the morning and I didn’t hear any complaints, they were just eager to get started.”

Each team will have massive shoes to fill with the graduation of multi-time individual state champions Dylan Sprecker and Jentrie Alderson, but despite losing both of the fastest runners in Class 3A, their impact lives on in those taking up their mantle.

“Dylan and Jentrie did a great job helping us build a foundation for when they were gone,” Caselman said. “They showed our runners what it takes to succeed and what kind of work ethic it takes to compete at a high level.”

With a new generation of runners taking center stage at Southeast of Saline, new names will be etched into the record books of one of the most storied programs in the state.

“We’ve built a strong cross country culture here at SES and we don’t take anything for granted,” he said. “The kids see all the banners hanging in the gym and they want to help us carry on the tradition of being a cross country powerhouse.”

The girl's team will enter the 2022 season as favorites to repeat as state champs according to KansasMileSplit.com, and will return a great deal of talent to defend their title.

The team will be anchored by senior star Ashley Prochazka and sophomore standout Abby Commerford, backed up by strong returners like Cali Augustine, Brookelyn Adams, Sadie Franklin, and Savannah Sutton, as well as a promising newcomer in freshman Breckyn Alderson.

“On the girl's side we are the favorites to win again but it’s going to take a lot of work to live up to that,” Caselman said. “We have a target on our backs but if this group shows improvement each day and if we run like we’re capable of I think we can make another state title run.”

On the boy's side, the new anchor of the team will be three-time all-state runner Damion Jackson, who will be pushed by fellow senior Nakari Morrical-Palmer.&nbsp;

The team also returns Cayden Walker and Levi Allen, who helped SES to a state track title along with Jackson and Morrical-Palmer last spring.

On top of a strong core of returners, the Trojans add a loaded freshman class, with the trio of Jacob Bircher, Isaiah Kejr, and Brayden Walker expected to have an impact right out of the gate.

“We have some freshmen coming in that had a nice junior high track season,” he said. They’ve already embraced the culture here and want to help us fulfill our goals.”

The boy’s team has also set their sights high but will have their work cut out for them as they try to chase down a Wichita Trinity team that returns every member of their state-winning 2021 squad.

“We had the kids fill out their individual and team goals and both teams without hesitation said they wanted to repeat as league and regional champions and to win at state,” Caselman said. “This is a fun group to work with and I’m excited for another great season.”

The 2022 campaign will kick off on Thursday, September first at the Abilene Invitational.

According to Sedgwick County booking records, Derby Police arrested 22-year-old Demarc Maurice Burgess late Monday in the 200 Block of North Baltimore in connection with the alleged crime.

Just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, police responded to the report of a shooting at 1215 N. Westview in the city of Derby, according to a statement from the city.

Officers located several witnesses to the shooting and one adult male who was suffering from a gunshot wound. EMS transported the victim to a local hospital where he died.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects who were captured after prompt action by a citizen to notify the sheriff's department that a crime had just occurred.

On August 26, a homeowners surveillance camera caught a package theft at a home in the 2300 Block of SW Indian Trail, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Detectives were quickly able to identify suspects seen on the video taking the packages.&nbsp; Deputies detained 35-year-old Chelsea Mullinix and 24-year-old Kelsey Sanstra both of Topeka for questioning.

Both were booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy to commit theft. Mullinix also faces multiple traffic violations.&nbsp;

WASHINGTON (AP) — As Republican-led states continue to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-health-nashville-idaho-3c1fa60987ad945b4935d2ac8c1f318f">ban nearly all abortions</a>, President Joe Biden said Friday that such restrictions were “beyond the pale.”

Biden and Democrats are trying to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-biden-us-supreme-court-health-dc870c873aec72e5c266133a01694aa3">harness outrage</a>&nbsp;over the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion nationwide, in this year's midterm elections.

“You’re going to hear women roar on this issue, and it’s going to be consequential,” he said.

Biden made the comments at a White House meeting of state and local officials to talk about ways to expand access to abortion and to mark Women's Equality Day. Kansas State Senator Dinah&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/members/sen_sykes_dinah_1/">Sykes of Lenexa&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;attended the meeting.

Biden reiterated his desire for Congress to codify Roe v. Wade into law, but "we're short a handful of votes," he said.

Democrats would need 10 Republican votes to overcome a filibuster and get a bill through the 50-50 Senate, but only two GOP senators have publicly backed abortion rights. And even though they narrowly control the Senate, Democrats don't have enough votes to sidestep the filibuster.

“The only way it's going to happen if the American people make it happen in November,” Biden said.

In the meantime, Biden has been looking for ways to protect abortion access. But his options are limited.

Idaho, Tennessee and Texas are the latest Republican-led states to tighten their restrictions. They've been implementing so-called “trigger laws" that were put on the books to severely limit abortions if Roe was overturned, which happened in June.

Lina Hidalgo, the county judge from Harris County, Texas, called her state's law a “slap in the face.”
