WABAUNSEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating six suspects after a weekend drug bust.

Just after 9a.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies executed a residential search warrant at a residence located on Lake View Circle, Lake Wabaunsee, according to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's offe. 

Deputies found six individuals at the residence and they were arrested on scene without incident and transported to the county jail where they remain confined pending bond:

Amber M. Taylor, 28, of Alma, was booked on requested charges of Narcotics Possession w/prior conviction and paraphernalia.

Hollie D. West, 36, of Burlingame, is being held on requested charges of Narcotics Possession and&nbsp; paraphernalia.

&nbsp;Jager D. Simmons, 30, of Topeka, was arrested on requested charges of Narcotics use/possession and paraphernalia.

&nbsp;Jessica M. Lawrence, 32, of Eskridge, was arrested on requested charges of Narcotics Possession. 

Michael Hobsin, 32, of Topeka, was arrested on requested charges of Narcotics Possession and held on outstanding warrant for Failure to Appear. 

John M. Rose, 32, of Lawrence, was arrested on requested charges of Narcotics use / possession and  paraphernalia..

A 13-year-old child was located in the house, was made safe and taken to the Sheriff's Office as Child in Need of Care. The child has been transferred to the custody of his family.

Saline County Jail Booking Activity, Aug 21

Payment linked to state’s role in a wrongful conviction leading to 16 years in prison

TOPEKA — House and Senate lawmakers and Gov. Laura Kelly agreed Wednesday to settle for $11.25 million&nbsp;a lawsuit brought by exoneree Floyd Bledsoe that accused Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Jefferson County officials of misconduct in a notorious murder case.

The settlement recommended by the office of Attorney General Kris Kobach wasn’t adopted unanimously by the State Finance Council. It was endorsed by the governor, four senators and two representatives, but state Rep. Troy Waymaster, a Bunker Hill Republican who chairs the House budget committee, voted against the deal.

No member of the State Finance Council commented on the settlement during the public portion of the remotely conducted meeting of the council, which met for an hour behind closed doors.

Bledsoe, who spent 16 years in state prison for crimes later attributed to his brother, agreed to the settlement presented to the State Finance Council. The council acts in the absence of the Kansas Legislature.

His convictions were vacated and he was released from prison in 2015 one month after his brother, Tom Bledsoe, committed suicide in Bonner Springs and left suicide notes confessing to assaulting and killing Camille Arfmann, 14, in 1999. Initially, Tom Bledsoe had admitted to the murder but changed his story and implicated Floyd Bledsoe, who was charged with first-degree murder. No forensic evidence was presented at trial implicating Floyd Bledsoe, but he was convicted and sentenced to life behind bars.

An order signed prior to his trial by a representative of the KBI, the county sheriff and the local prosecutor put a halt to DNA testing of evidence in the case. In 2014, however, DNA testing of a vaginal swab matched Tom Bledsoe and excluded Floyd Bledsoe.

Floyd Bledsoe filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in 2016 alleging he was framed by a coalition of county and state law enforcement officers.

In 2019, the state of Kansas awarded $1 million to Floyd Bledsoe under a law dictating year-by-year compensation for wrongfully convicted Kansans. The Jefferson County Commission, which was liable for conduct of county officials in the murder case, agreed earlier this year to pay him $7.5 million over 10 years.

The State Finance Council unanimously approved a $500,000 settlement of the lawsuit brought against the Kansas Highway Patrol for the death of a motorist fatally injured in Topeka when a trooper forced a vehicle off the road.

The suit was brought by the family of Anita Benz, who died of injuries sustained in a March 2021 police chase. The suit was filed against the KHP alleging Trooper Justin Dobler and alleged he using lethal force to stop a vehicle that he contended had a cracked windshield.

Dobler, who was fired by KHP but won reinstatement to his job, began following a white Ford Crown Victoria that he suspected was stolen. The driver, Jeremy Cline, refused to pull over. Dobler pursued the car through residential streets, but didn’t stop when informed the car wasn’t stolen.

Despite warnings from KHP supervisors against using tactical maneuvers to immobilize vehicles in violation of agency policy, Dobler used his cruiser to run the Ford off the road. The Crown Victoria slammed into a utility pole, causing head trauma and other injuries that killed Benz.

Prosecutors charged Cline with felony murder, but the Kansas Court of Appeals this year upheld a district court judge’s decision to suppress evidence recovered after the vehicle maneuver by Dobler. The appellate court concluded Dobler’s actions were “an objectively unreasonable use of excessive force.”

In March, the family of Benz filed the lawsuit alleging excessive force and negligence. It said Dobler had been reprimanded by KHP in two previous vehicle chases. The suit named Dobler as well as Cline as defendants

Stiefel Theatre The Salina Stiefel Theatre is honored to share that George Takei is the author of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/today/announcement/?id=90036" target="_blank">2023 K-State First Book "They Called Us Enemy."</a> K-State First Book, the all-university reading program that is part of K-State First, selects a common book each academic year and coordinates classroom and campus activities to correspond with the reading.&nbsp; K-State First Book provides incoming students with a shared academic experience that they can discuss with professors, staff, administrators and other students when they arrive on campus. Participation in the K-State First Book program is voluntary.

George Takei to visit Salina in Sept.

It was a time of change, shifts in thinking, protesting the Vietnam War, the Equal Rights Movement, Watergate, and the debut of Saturday Night Live. 1976 was our nation’s bicentennial. It was a time to “Do the Disco”, and watch the first (of many) Rocky movies.&nbsp; We became obsessed with the Bermuda Triangle and gnomes were even more popular than they are today. We balanced love stories with historical sagas and horror. Books on diets and sex flew off the shelves. And a certain shark saw to it that we didn’t vacation near the Atlantic Ocean for quite some time. The 1950s were just far enough behind us to be fascinating, and that fascination was fueled by the TV show “Happy Days” and the movies “Grease” and “American Graffiti”. Most of us happily scheduled our lives around the TV mini-series craze (see the titles with an *).

Saline County Booking Activity, Aug. 17

CLOUD COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a weekend car theft have captured the suspect.

Just after 7:30a.m. Wednesday, police arrested&nbsp; 34-year-lold Ric Jacob Meczywor at the intersection of 15th and Olive in Concordia, according to a media release from Concordia Police.&nbsp; He was jailed on Cloud County warrants for failure to comply and additional requested charges from the weekend activity are being sent to the county attorney.&nbsp;

On Sunday, police asked the public for help to locate a Meczqwor for&nbsp;allegedly stealing a&nbsp;silver 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix&nbsp; with Kansas tag 808SBZ. He is also accused of entering another vehicle&nbsp; in same parking lot Saturday night.&nbsp;

Meczywor was booked into the Cloud County Jail in May and released from custody July 6, according to online jail records.

Suspect wanted for car theft captured in north-central Kansas

THOMAS COUNTY – Over the past four weeks the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office worked alongside the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Colby Police Department, and the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) on an investigation involving the distribution and manufacturing of controlled substances, according to a media release from the KBI.

On Aug. 14 and Aug. 15, multiple search warrants were executed in Thomas County with assistance from the KBI High Risk Warrant Team, the KBI Clandestine Laboratory Team, and the Colby Police Department. Located during a search of a residence was methamphetamine, an active marijuana grow, and paraphernalia and other illegal items used in drug manufacturing.

Jensina Sporing, 39, of Colby, Kansas, was arrested on multiple requested felony charges including distribution of a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, unlawful drug proceeds from a transaction, use of a communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation, and two counts of use or possess with the intent to use drug paraphernalia.

Lawrence Hapke, 47, also of Colby, was arrested on requested charges of possession of a controlled substance, use or possess with the intent to use drug paraphernalia, and interference with law enforcement.

The suspects were booked into the Thomas County Jail. Another arrest connected to this operation is expected.

Located during a search of a residence was methamphetamine, an active marijuana grow, and paraphernalia and other illegal items used in drug manufacturing.<figure>

 </figure>Jensina Sporing, 39, of Colby, Kansas, was arrested on multiple requested felony charges including distribution of a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, unlawful drug proceeds from a transaction, use of a communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation, and two counts of use or possess with the intent to use drug paraphernalia.Lawrence Hapke, 47, also of Colby, was arrested on requested charges of possession of a controlled substance, use or possess with the intent to use drug paraphernalia, and interference with law enforcement.The suspects were booked into the Thomas County Jail. Another arrest connected to this operation is expected.

KBI finds meth, marijuana grow operation at NW Kan. home

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple drug allegations.

Just after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, sherif's deputies and detectives executed a search warrant at Finer Mobile Home Park located at 5501 9th Street, lot 96 in Great Bend, according to Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

The search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation related to illegal drugs and outstanding arrest warrants.

Deputies gained entry to the residence without resistance and located Chet Whetham, 35 of Great Bend who had outstanding warrants from Harvey County for distribution of fentanyl. 

During the course of the investigation, Sheriff’s Officers discovered methamphetamine, fentanyl tablets, marijuana and suspected fentanyl powder. 

Whetham was transported to the Barton County Jail and booked on the Harvey County warrant as well as requested charges of distribution of fentanyl and various other drug-related charges for Barton County. 

Whetham is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond for Harvey County and an additional bond for Barton County.

The Sheriff’s Office had requested assistance from the Kansas Bureau of investigation for this operation. The KBI has recently added several K9s and handlers who are specifically trained in the detection of fentanyl.

Further arrests from the search warrant are anticipated in the near future.

Can I tell you a secret? How about 84 of them?

That sounds like a lot. In this case, I’m referring to a new book that intentionally shares such little known stories. The book is titled Secret Kansas. It is chock-full of fascinating and little-known stories about our state.

Roxie Yonkey, who we have profiled before, is an author, blogger and travel writer. A Nebraska native, she became a staff writer at a college in Virginia. She came back to the Midwest for her career in journalism, married a Kansan in Goodland, and worked in tourism for years. She found she enjoyed writing about Kansas attractions.

In 2019, Yonkey launched a website and travel blog called&nbsp;<a href="http://www.roxieontheroad.com/">www.roxieontheroad.com</a>, of which she is the CEO: that is, Chief Exploration Officer.

She continues to write and post about Kansas attractions. In 2021, Yonkey published her book titled “100 Things to Do in Kansas Before You Die,” as we have previously profiled.

In 2023, Yonkey published another book. This one is titled “Secret Kansas: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure.” It is a gem. The book chronicles little known oddities and attractions around the state, complete with photos, locations and tips for visiting.

For example, there is the heart-wrenching story of Father Emil Kapaun, the Kansan who sacrificed his life for American prisoners in Korea and is a candidate for sainthood. There are the examples of how and where Kansas Day and Veteran’s Day and the GI Bill and the National Teachers Hall of Fame all began in Kansas. There is the world’s largest mural painted by a single artist, the state’s 106th county, and the town that might have provided the inspiration for Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.

The fascinating stories just keep coming. In 1890, a magazine held a contest to write a Pledge of Allegiance for America. Cherryvale thirteen-year-old Frank Bellamy submitted his version and saw it published in the magazine but credited it to Anonymous. When he checked, he was told that all submissions were the magazine’s property.

Meanwhile, a member of the magazine’s marketing staff claimed that he had written his own version of the Pledge of Allegiance. That version was only one word different from the one submitted by young Frank Bellamy. The name of the magazine writer? Francis Bellamy – no relation.&nbsp; For decades, Francis Bellamy would be credited as the author of the Pledge of Allegiance, but later research found that young Frank’s version was published first.

Who knew?&nbsp; “You can’t make this stuff up,” Yonkey said.

There are stories of odd attractions, parks, wildlife areas, ghosts, ghost towns and little known historical monuments. The stories come from communities large and small, including rural communities such as Damar, population 112; Coolidge, population 80; and Studley, population 33 people. Now, that’s rural.

Yonkey is planning to produce a couple more Kansas books through her current publisher. She also has a special book that she wants to publish herself.

“I think I was inspired by the story of a woman in Goodland, Eva Morely Murphy, who played a pivotal role in getting women the right to vote in her community, which allowed our town to get a Carnegie Library,” Yonkey said. “My passion project is to write about women who did amazing things in Kansas history.”

Since Kansas was the nation’s 34th state (and Ike the 34th President), Yonkey plans to feature 34 women.

Yonkey is inviting the public to nominate women who should be covered in the new book. Nominations can be submitted through the website,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.34kansaswomen.com/">34kansaswomen.com</a>.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas house fire and have made arrests.

Just after 10:30a.m. Monday, fire crews&nbsp;responded to a reported house fire at 631 SE 35th Street in Topeka, according to fire department spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire in the single-story home. Fire crews searched the house, and determined no one was home at the time of the fire.

Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set and&nbsp;two individuals were arrested&nbsp;

Shaliqua A. Hill, 28, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Arson and Criminal use of explosives..A 17-year-old girl was also arrested and booked on requested charges of Arson, Criminal use of explosives, Criminal threat and Criminal damage to property.

The origin of the fire was on the exterior of the house near a bedroom window.&nbsp;The total estimated loss was approximately $3,000, all attributed to structural loss.

Two accused of using explosive to start Kansas house fire

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple allegations after she ran from a traffic stop.

Just before 3a.m. August 13,&nbsp;a deputy with the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a red 2012 Chevrolet Equinox in the 2000 block of SE 11th Street for speeding, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. 

The driver later identified as 22-year-old Alyiah L. Love of Topeka failed to stop and quickly fled the vehicle on foot in the 1200 block of SE Republican Avenue.

After a search, a Topeka police officer located Love nearby and she was placed into custody. During the investigation, illegal narcotics were located.

Love was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include possession of a certain stimulant, possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with law enforcement, operating a motor vehicle without a valid license, operating a motor vehicle without registration, no vehicle liability insurance and speeding. She is no longer in custody.

Kansas woman jailed after running from traffic stop

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A driver accused of DUI in a fatal crash on July 20 in Sedgwick County has yet to make a court appearance, according to the Sedgwick County District attorney's office. The Kansas Highway Patrol had not scheduled an appointment with the district attorney's office.

The patrol reported a 2013 Dodge Journey driven by Caleb T. Faron, 18, Bel Aire,&nbsp; was northbound on Interstate 135 just north of 13th Street in the #3 lane moving to the #4 lane.

Faron failed to see a 2011 Hyundai Sonata driven by Uriel&nbsp;Orosco, 31, Wichita, slowing down in lane 4 with emergency hazard lights activated.

After impact, the Hyundai rotated counterclockwise and came to rest in the #4 lane against the KDOT bridge wall. The Dodge overturned and came to rest in the #3 lane.&nbsp;

Orosco was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Forensics Science Center. EMS transported a passenger in the Hyundia identified as Nallely Medrano Meraz, 28, Wichita, to Wesley Medical Center. 

Faron was not injured and later that night was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on a requested charge that included driving under the influence and marijuana possession, according to online jail records.&nbsp; He is no longer in custody.

 Orosco was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.&nbsp;&nbsp;There were also two children in the Hyundai; juvenile record is protected data.

The Dodge overturned and came to rest in the #3 lane.&nbsp;Orosco was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Forensics Science Center. EMS transported a passenger in the Hyundia identified as Nallely Medrano Meraz, 28, Wichita, to Wesley Medical Center. Faron was not injured and later that night was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on a requested charge that included driving under the influence and marijuana possession, according to online jail records.&nbsp; He is no longer in custody. Orosco was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.&nbsp;&nbsp;There were also two children in the Hyundai; juvenile record is protected data.
