Virginia Jacqueline Clapp, age 86, Hays, Kansas passed away on Wednesday September 28, 2022, at Hays Medical Center. She was born October 28, 1935, in Salina, Kansas, to Anthony and Edith (Pihl) Zamrzla. A 1953 graduate of Sacred Heart High School, she was known as "Zam" by her friends. She was particularly proud of this nickname, as it was shared with her dad, Sacred Heart basketball's Coach Zam. Virginia met the love of her life, a tall, handsome US Air Force airman named Gene Clapp, on her front porch for a blind date, a date that had been set up by her best friend. Gene and Virginia were married in Salina on June 2, 1957, the day after she graduated from Marymount College. Gene preceded her in death November 27, 1988. Making their home in several Kansas towns as teachers, the Clapps made their final move in 1971 to Hays, KS. Virginia began teaching English at Hays Junior High, which later transitioned to Felten Middle School, teaching in the same classroom for 23 years. She was known by all for her red grading pen, finding and correcting writing and grammatical errors of both pupils and colleagues. A favorite last day of school tradition blossomed during those years where Mrs. Clapp and a teaching friend would engage in a water gun fight in the hallways of FMS. Mrs. Clapp retired from teaching in 1992 but kept busy with many activities. She served as an elder, deacon, and chairwoman for Presbyterian Women of Hays First Presbyterian Church. A favorite part of her service was the weekly Wednesday Bible study with friends from church. She also met weekly with a group of retired teacher friends, known as "The Wednesday Night Club," who went out to eat at all the different restaurants Hays had to offer. Virginia also served several years as chairperson for the Humane Society of the High Plains' annual fundraiser, The Souper Bowl. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, daughter Gayla Amend, stillborn daughter Holly, her father and mother, brothers Bruce Zamrzla and Larry Zamrzla, sister-in-law Shirley Zamrzla, nephew Brett Zamrzla, father and mother-in-law Fred and Myrtle Clapp. She is survived by daughters Lanette Shaffer and husband Kevin of Fort Morgan, CO, Jenny Prine and husband Toby of Hays, KS, son-in-law Ty Amend of Wichita, KS, grandchildren Lexi (Nate) Rogers, Tyler Shaffer, Emily (Michael) Stefan, and Andrew Prine, great grandchildren Oaklyn and Easton Rogers, Eleanor Stefan, sister-in-law Jeanette Zamrzla, and many nieces and nephews. Charles Roscoe “Charlie” Townsend, 92, died Sunday, September 25, 2022 in Wichita, Kansas. He was born March 25, 1930 in Grinnell, Kansas to John “Matt” and Apalona “Lona” (Fischer) Townsend.

He married Lorene Boden in Downs, Kansas and together they created a beautiful life and family. The love of their lives were their three children, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Charles worked for the City of Beloit before retiring in 1995.

A lifelong learner, Charles was interested in everything from history and geography, to science and philosophy, his inquisitive mind knew no bounds. An avid reader, he always had a book in his hand. It could be a classic novel, a western, a collection of poetry, or any source that could add to his wealth of knowledge.

Charles loved the outdoors and saw beauty all around. Gardening was a passion, and tending to his vegetables and flowers brought him great joy. Other hobbies included woodworking, solving crossword puzzles, and watching Jeopardy every day.

Charles loved people and could carry on a conversation with anyone. His wonderful sense of humor and witty personality brought a smile to all.

Survivors include his wife Lorene of Beloit; son Steve (Susan) Townsend of Cheney, Kansas; daughters Jane Cale of St. Charles, Missouri and Judy (Dennis) Sander of Liberal, Kansas; his six grandchildren, Jason (Mariah) Townsend, Matt Townsend, Jared Cale, Jami (Aaron) Defenbaugh, Melissa (Sandon) Hilditch, and Madelyn Sander; nine great-grandchildren; and his sister Marie (Dale) Suter of Oakley, Kansas.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bob (Ruth) and Bill (Veda) Townsend, and son-in-law James Cale.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, September 30, at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday and visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the rosary service begins at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

SALINA -&nbsp;Carol A. Stewart&nbsp;was called home on September 22, 2022 in Salina, KS. She was born on December 24, 1950 in Beloit, Kansas to Clare and June Nelson. The family later settled in Denver, Colorado. Carol remained in Denver until 2015 when she moved to Salina.

During her work life, she had several jobs that she always excelled at. These included a deputy sheriff, secretary, and ultimately, working for the state of Colorado for 40 years.

Carol loved the ocean and anything to do with it. Her home décor included shells, paintings, books and much more that showed her love for the sea. She loved music and dancing. Her favorite band was Pink Floyd and it was often heard playing in her car or home. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She was also famous among her family for sending cards. No matter the occasion, everyone could expect a card from her that let them know she was thinking of them. She was a very giving and caring woman that touched the life of anyone she met. She had many lifelong friends that were more like family.

She adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her happiest moments were spending time with her family. Carol’s favorite holiday was Christmas because that is when family all gathered and it made her heart happy. She got the most joy at Christmas eve when her birthday was celebrated with family.

Carol will be dearly missed by anyone she ever met. She had several close friends at her last residence that she spoke of often.

She was preceded in passing by her parents.

 She is survived by one sister, Nona Van Winkle (Wilbur) Colorado, two brothers, Clint Nelson (Pat), Colorado and Ray Nelson (Susan) Wisconsin, one son Scott Sitton (Layne) Kansas, one daughter, Shareen Knowles (Lima) Colorado, five granddaughters, Kayla Sitton, Kansas, Taylor Sitton, Kansas, Haylie Werner (Austin), Kansas, Brianna Lima, Colorado, Kamryn Sitton, Kansas, two grandsons Sterling Lima, Colorado, Bronx Sitton, Kansas, and five great-grandchildren, Tatum, Isabella, Nora, Aujzia, Wren.

There will be a celebration of life at her request at a date to be determined. We will miss her greatly here, but we know that she has rejoined other loved ones that have been called home before her.

Her favorite band was Pink Floyd and it was often heard playing in her car or home. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She was also famous among her family for sending cards. No matter the occasion, everyone could expect a card from her that let them know she was thinking of them. She was a very giving and caring woman that touched the life of anyone she met. She had many lifelong friends that were more like family.She adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her happiest moments were spending time with her family. Carol’s favorite holiday was Christmas because that is when family all gathered and it made her heart happy. She got the most joy at Christmas eve when her birthday was celebrated with family.Carol will be dearly missed by anyone she ever met. She had several close friends at her last residence that she spoke of often.She was preceded in passing by her parents. SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a police recruit in connection with an alleged criminal threat.

Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday the Wichita Police Department responded to a domestic violence disturbance in the 1700 block of South Beech Street in Wichita, according to Office Chad Ditch.

Officers arrived on the scene and contacted a 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman both of Wichita. 

Officers learned that man was involved in a verbal argument with a 21- year-old man, identified as Recruit Officer Trevon Morrison.

For transparency purposes, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate and booked Morrison on a requested charge of Criminal Threat.

Morrison is a Recruit Officer with the Wichita Police Department and assigned to the training academy. He has been employed since July 25, 2022.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal July 16 shooting have arrested 35-year-old Emmanuel Rashad Walker, according to online jail records. Authorities booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections at 6:30p.m. Tuesday.&nbsp;

Police have not released details of the arrest.

On July 16, police were dispatched to report of a shooting in the 900 Block of SW 8th Street in Topeka, according to Police LT Ronnie Connell.

First responders found <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/bv3sq?member=20743751&amp;sharetype=teams&amp;utm_campaign=p_na+share-sheet&amp;utm_medium=copy_link&amp;utm_source=customer">34-year-old&nbsp; Kirk Sexton </a>suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Several days later, Topeka Police issued an alert for help to locate Walker in reference to the homicide investigation.

Walker is being held on a&nbsp;$1,000,000.00 on requested charges of&nbsp;Murder in the 1st degree; Intentional and premeditated, criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated battery, domestic battery, assault, criminal trespass, burglary, theft, criminal damage to property, interference with law enforcement and a number of traffic violations, according to online jail records.

 Walker has previous convictions for aggravated assault in 2009 and for, obstruction and drug possession in 2019, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections

Kansas man wanted for July murder captured, held on $1M bond

TORONTO — Aaron Judge tied Roger Maris' American League record of 61 home runs in a season, hitting a tiebreaking, two-run drive for the New York Yankees in the seventh inning against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night.

The 30-year-old slugger drove a 94.5 mph belt-high sinker with a full-count from left-hander Tim Mayza over the left-field fence at Rogers Centre. The 117.4 mph drive took just 3.8 seconds to land 394 feet from the plate. and it put the Yankees ahead 5-3.

The ball clanked off the front of the stands, just below two fans who reached over a railing and tried for a catch. The dropped into Toronto's bullpen and was picked by by Blue Jays bullpen coach Matt Bushman, who turned it over to the Yankees.

Judge's mother and Roger Maris Jr. rose and hugged from front-row seats. He appeared to point toward them after rounding second base, then was congratulated by the entire Yankees team who gave him hugs after he crossed the plate.

Judge moved past the 60 home runs Babe Ruth hit in 1927, which had stood as the major league mark until Maris broke it in 1961. All three stars reached those huge numbers playing for the Yankees.

Barry Bonds holds the big league record of 73 for the San Francisco Giants in 2001.

Judge had gone seven games without a home run — his longest drought this season was nine in mid-August. This was the Yankees' 155th game of the season, leaving them seven more in the regular season.

The home run came in the fourth plate appearance of the night for Judge, ending a streak of 34 plate appearances without a home run.

Judge is hitting .314 with 130 RBIs, also the top totals in the AL. He has a chance to become the first AL Triple Crown winner since Detroit's Miguel Cabrera in 2012.

Maris hit No. 61 for the Yankees on Oct. 1, 1961, against Boston Red Sox pitcher Tracy Stallard.

Maris' mark has been exceeded six times, but all have been tainted by the stench of steroids. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1998 and 65 the following year, and Bonds topped him. Sammy Sosa had 66, 65 and 63 during a four-season span starting in 1998.

McGwire admitted using banned steroids, while Bonds and Sosa denied knowingly using performing-enhancing drugs. Major League Baseball started testing with penalties for PEDs in 2004, and some fans — perhaps many — until now have considered Maris the holder of the "clean" record.

Among the tallest batters in major league history, the 6-foot-7 Judge burst on the scene on Aug. 13, 2016, homering off the railing above Yankee Stadium's center-field sports bar and into the netting above Monument Park. He followed Tyler Austin to the plate and they become the first teammates to homer in their first major league at-bats in the same game.

Judge hit 52 homers with 114 RBIs the following year and was a unanimous winner of the AL Rookie of the Year award. Injuries limited him during the following three seasons, and he rebounded to hit 39 homers with 98 RBIs in 2021.

As he approached his last season before free agent eligibility, Judge on opening day turned down the Yankees' offer of an eight-year contract worth from $230.5 million to $234.5 million. The proposal included an average of $30.5 million annually from 2023-29, with his salary this year to be either the $17 million offered by the team in arbitration or the $21 million requested by the player.

An agreement was reached in June on a $19 million, one-year deal, and Judge heads into this offseason likely to get a contract from the Yankees or another team for $300 million or more, perhaps topping $400 million.

Judge hit six homers in April, 12 in May and 11 in June. He earned his fourth All-Star selection and entered the break with 33 homers. He had 13 homers in July and dropped to nine in August, when injuries left him less protected in the batting order and pitchers walked him 25 times.

He became just the fifth player to hold a share of the AL season record. Nap Lajoie hit 14 in the AL's first season as a major league in 1901, and Philadelphia Athletics teammate Socks Seabold had 16 the next year, a mark that stood until Babe Ruth hit 29 in 1919. Ruth set the record four times in all, with 54 in 1920, 59 in 1921 and 60 in 1927, a mark that stood until Maris' 61 in 1961.

Maris was at 35 in July 1961 during the first season each team's schedule increased from 154 games to 162, and baseball Commissioner Ford Frick ruled if anyone topped Ruth in more than 154 games "there would have to be some distinctive mark in the record books to show that Babe Ruth's record was set under a 154-game schedule."

That "distinctive mark" became known as an "asterisk" and it remained until Sept. 4, 1991, when a committee on statistical accuracy chaired by Commissioner Fay Vincent voted unanimously to recognize Maris as the record holder.

Yankees star Judge hits 61st home run, ties Maris' AL record

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a disturbance and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 7 p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to a disturbance with weapon call in the 1600 block of N. Pennsylvania in Wichita, according to Officer Chad Ditch. 

911 operators had received a call from a citizen reporting an unknown man had thrown a brick through their car window.

Officers arrived in the area and contacted a 57-year-old victim who was bleeding severely from an injury to his wrist. An officer quickly applied a tourniquet to the man and rendered aid until EMS could transport him to an area hospital for treatment.

Officers learned the victim had followed the suspect after the brick was thrown at his car when the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Samuel Burns, approached him with a knife and cut him twice. 

Officers began checking the area for the suspect, who was still armed with the knife, and located him in the 1900 block of N. Hydraulic where he was taken into custody.

Burns booked into the Sedgwick County Jail for aggravated battery, interference with law enforcement, criminal damage, criminal threat, and a warrant for domestic battery. Hospital staff informed officers that their quick action in applying a tourniquet to the victim saved his life

Burns has a previous drug conviction, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Quick action by police saved Kansas man after knife attack

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent domestic dispute and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 5p.m. Tuesday, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 3322 Railroad Avenue in reference to a reported disturbance, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir. Individuals at the scene reported a woman had been struck by a vehicle and there had also been a stabbing.

Upon arrival, deputies located the suspect vehicle as it was attempting to flee the scene. The driver identified as 42-year-old Justin Merritt of Hays was taken into custody.

Witnesses at the scene stated the driver of the vehicle, Merritt, accelerated toward the victim several times, at one point striking her causing the victim to go over the hood of the vehicle, according to Bellendir. Further investigation indicated the suspect had several self-inflicted lacerations to an arm.&nbsp;

Great Bend Fire Department EMS service was called to the location to examine Merritt. After medical treatment, Merritt was transported to the Barton County Jail without incident and booked on requested charges of aggravated battery and is being held in lieu of a $40,000 bond.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A woman accused in connection with the&nbsp;August 2020 deadly shooting outside a nightclub in Wichita made her first court appearance Tuesday.

Autumn Metcalf, 31 of Wichita, is charged with solicitation to commit murder in the 1st&nbsp;degree, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just before 7p.m. Monday, police booked Metcalf into the Sedgwick County jail, according to<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=422189"> online booking records.</a>

Just after 9p.m. August 24, 2020 police responded to a shooting at Baby Dolls in the 4900 Block of North Arkansas in Wichita, according to Wichita Police Captain Jason Stephens.

At the scene, police found&nbsp; 33-year-old Joe Wheeler III dead of a gunshot wound in a vehicle.

Investigators learned there was a disturbance in the club that spilled out into the parking lot.&nbsp; Wheeler was shot while inside his car which was parked in the back business parking area, according to Stephens.&nbsp;

Attorneys are scheduled to discuss the case on Oct. 11. <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=422189">She is being held</a> on a $250,000 bond.

FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspects after a large drug investigation in southwest Kansas.

Just after 1a.m. Saturday, police and members of the Garden City/Finney County Joint Drug Task Force conducted a traffic stop in the 4100 block of E U.S. Highway 50 in Garden City, according to a media release.

After further investigation, a search of the vehicle was conducted, where officers located counterfeit oxycodone pills mixed with fentanyl and drug paraphernalia.

The driver, identified as 29-year-old Cheyenne McGahan and two passengers 53-year-old April Williams and&nbsp; 46-year-old Steven Calhoun both from Garden City were taken into custody following the traffic stop.  

The Garden City/Finney County Joint Drug Task Force served a search warrant at Calhoun’s residence at 2914 N Fleming Street #210.

Through the entire investigation, officers seized as evidence from the traffic stop and Calhoun’s residence 991 counterfeit oxycodone pills that contained fentanyl, 38.1 grams of Methamphetamine , 40 units of liquid Methamphetamine/Fentanyl, 22 units of Fentanyl&nbsp; and items indicative of the distribution and consumption of illegal narcotics

Calhoun and Williams were booking on requested charges of Distribution of Opiates/Fentanyl, Distribution of Methamphetamine, Possession of Stimulant, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. 

McGahan is being held on requested charges of Possession of Opiates, Possession of Stimulants, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and two out of County Warrants.

Jean Estelle Peters, the daughter of Robert Bouchard and Phyllis Estelle (Brandon) Bouchard was born August 15, 1948 in Canyon City, Colorado and passed away on September 9, 2022 at Republic County Hospital, Belleville, KS at the age of 74 years, and 24 days.

Jean grew up in the Penrose, Florence, and the Westcliffe, Colorado area.&nbsp;&nbsp; She completed her schooling and later attended Business College for one year. Jean lived in Pueblo, Co for several years, working as a secretary for the Firestone Tire Company. 

She met Eugene Peters in 1968.&nbsp; They were united in marriage in 1969 and they moved to the family farm in the Cuba, KS area where they lived for 21 years.

She later worked for Region V Adult Services in Fairbury, NE for 20 years, working as an in house caregiver and later as an administrative med aide. She retired to Munden, KS and recently had moved to Belleville, KS.

Jean was a member of the Eastern Star for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Phyllis Bouchard;&nbsp; brother Pat; sister Yvonne Piquette, and granddaughter Raelene Henderson.

Jean is survived by two sons, Matthew (Rachel) Peters of Belleville, KS and&nbsp;Shawn (Karen) Woolsey of Belleville, KS; three grandchildren: &nbsp;Taylor Peters, Trevon Peters, and Tess Woolsey;&nbsp; three great-grandchildren:&nbsp; Trenton Zenger, Elora Henderson, and Brock Henderson;&nbsp; three brothers,&nbsp; Mike (Patty) Bouchard of Pueblo, CO,&nbsp; Jerry (Marsha) Bouchard and Tom (Vashaun) Bouchard all of Canyon City, CO;&nbsp; other relatives and friends.

Cremation was selected and a Memorial Gathering will be held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas. Friends may sign the register book and greet the family at this time.&nbsp;

Peters | Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home</a>August 15, 1948 ~ September 9, 2022 (age 74)Jean Estelle Peters, the daughter of Robert Bouchard and Phyllis Estelle (Brandon) Bouchard was born August 15, 1948 in Canyon City, Colorado and passed away on September 9, 2022 at Republic County Hospital, Belleville, KS at the age of 74 years, and 24 days.Jean grew up in the Penrose, Florence, and the Westcliffe, Colorado area.&nbsp;&nbsp; She completed her schooling and later attended Business College for one year. Jean lived in Pueblo, Co for several years, working as a secretary for the Firestone Tire Company. She met Eugene Peters in 1968.&nbsp; They were united in marriage in 1969 and they moved to the family farm in the Cuba, KS area where they lived for 21 years.She later worked for Region V Adult Services in Fairbury, NE for 20 years, working as an in house caregiver and later as an administrative med aide. She retired to Munden, KS and recently had moved to Belleville, KS.Jean was a member of the Eastern Star for several years.She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Phyllis Bouchard;&nbsp; brother Pat; sister Yvonne Piquette, and granddaughter Raelene Henderson.Jean is survived by two sons, Matthew (Rachel) Peters of Belleville, KS and&nbsp;Shawn (Karen) Woolsey of Belleville, KS; three grandchildren: &nbsp;Taylor Peters, Trevon Peters, and Tess Woolsey;&nbsp; three great-grandchildren:&nbsp; Trenton Zenger, Elora Henderson, and Brock Henderson;&nbsp; three brothers,&nbsp; Mike (Patty) Bouchard of Pueblo, CO,&nbsp; Jerry (Marsha) Bouchard and Tom (Vashaun) Bouchard all of Canyon City, CO;&nbsp; other relatives and friends.Cremation was selected and a Memorial Gathering will be held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas. UPDATE 4:11 p.m. Tuesday: The Salina Police Department this afternoon announced that an arrest has been made in connection to a threatening statement written on a women's bathroom wall at Salina South High School.

Following is the statement issued this afternoon by the Salina Police Department.

On September 26, 2022, a School Resource Officer was made aware of a threatening statement written on one of the women’s bathroom walls at Salina South High School. The statement indicated that a school shooting would take place on September 27, 2022, at 8:30 am.

USD 305 Staff notified parents of the threat via email correspondence. Please know that the Salina Police Department worked hand in hand with USD305 school officials to investigate this incident and ensure that local schools were safe. On September 27th, the police department had an increased law enforcement presence at Salina South High School.

On September 27, 2022, a citizen contacted the Police Department with information that led to the arrest of a 14-year-old female student of Salina South High School. The 14-year-old will be booked into juvenile detention, and the Salina Police Department is requesting charges of Criminal Threat and misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property.

The Salina Police Department takes these threats seriously and will work to identify suspect(s) and make an arrest when probable cause exists. The Salina Police Department would like to remind the public that citizen tips are often instrumental in helping clear criminal cases.

Salina South students and staff will have an increased police presence Tuesday morning after a reported threats via graffiti.

In a text to parents and guardians Monday, Salina South Principal Charles Kipp wrote:

Increased conversations about school safety are occurring nationwide. Our goal is to partner with you to ensure our schools are safe.

Today there was a report of graffiti in a girl's restroom stall that included the statements, "School shooting tmrw 8:30 a.m." and "Get ready! Bring yo guns to school and let the fun begin!"

We have been working with the Salina Police Department on this matter. Unfortunately, in this instance we have been unable to identify the individual(s) who were responsible for the statements.

As always, our goal is to ensure the safety of students and staff. There will be increased police presence tomorrow morning at our school, and our staff will be monitoring the hallways and the school.

If your student shares any information with you about this threat, please let me know. Many times students have access to information that we do not.

It is a good time to remind your student to notify an adult if they hear or read information that could indicate a school safety issye. Open communication is the best way for us to maintain a safe learning environment.
