KIOWA COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office detention officer Monday afternoon for child sex crimes.

On Monday, March 2, at 2:00 p.m., KBI agents arrested Dustin Dean Chartier, 36, of Greensburg, at the Kiowa County Courthouse, according to a media release from the KBI.

 Chartier was arrested on requested charges of rape, aggravated sexual battery, indecent liberties with a child, lewd and lascivious behavior, and two counts of indecent solicitation of a child.

In December 2025, the Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office requested the KBI investigate allegations of sex abuse of a minor by a detention officer in 2021. Chartier was placed on administrative leave during the KBI investigation. While investigating the initial allegation, a second victim disclosed another sex abuse incident, prompting the KBI to open an additional investigation. The Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office was fully cooperative with the investigation.

Following his arrest Chartier was booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility.

KBI: Two child victims report sex abuse involving Kan. jail deputy 

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan.—Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on drug allegations.

Just after 11:30p.m. Feb. 28, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 75 at 102nd Road on a Toyota Tacoma, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

A probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted. During the search of the vehicle, cocaine, marijuana and open alcohol containers were found.

Francisco Ventura-Cabrales, 50, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, driving while suspended, and transporting an open container.

Hector David Cerillo-Ventura, 29, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail for transporting an open container.

In its 42nd year, the 2026 Salina Spring Poetry Series features a lineup of accomplished poets who will read in downtown Salina. In-person readings will occur at 7:00 pm on Tuesdays in April at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).

Since its founding in 1984 by poet Patricia Traxler, the series celebrates National Poetry Month each April and serves as a meeting point for national, regional, and local poets and appreciators of poetry. Celebrating poetic perspectives in the community, each reading entertains and provokes thought on critical issues. The series integrates diverse poetic voices, mirroring social discussions and artistic expressions. Over the years, it has hosted Pulitzer Prize winners and U.S. Poet Laureates, alongside many Kansas Poet Laureates, regionally significant poets, and new voices.

The series this year is sponsored by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities and was curated by Traci Brimhall, Kansas Poet Laureate. 

Admission to each reading will be $5 at the door and free for students with ID.

April 7 - Adam Scheffler grew up in California, received his MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and his PhD in English from Harvard. He is the author of two books of poetry—A Dog's Life—which won the 2016 Jacar Press Book Contest, and Heartworm—which won the 2021 Moon City Press Prize. His poems have appeared in The American Poetry Review, Yale Review, Poem-a-Day, Verse Daily, Rattle, Narrative, and many other literary journals. He is also the author of a book of literary criticism, So This Is What It Feels Like: Empathy in the Poetry of James Wright (forthcoming from LSU Press in May).

April 14 - Luisa Muradyan is originally from Odesa, Ukraine and is the author of I Make Jokes When I'm Devastated (SMU Project Poetica, 2025) When the World Stopped Touching (YesYes Books, 2027), and American Radiance (University of Nebraska Press, 2018). She holds a Ph.D. in Poetry from the University of Houston and won the 2017 Raz/ Shumaker Prairie Schooner Book Prize. Additionally, Muradyan is a member of the Cheburashka Collective, a group of women and nonbinary writers from the former Soviet Union. Salina Spring poetry series featuring several accomplished poets to read at Red Fern Booksellers

Frustrated and anxious travelers searched Tuesday for any way out of the Middle East and beyond as the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/iran-war-israel-trump-03-03-2026">widening Iran war</a>&nbsp;choked off commercial air traffic through the region for a fourth straight day, stranding hundreds of thousands of people.

What began Saturday with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran quickly rippled far beyond the immediate conflict zone. With airspace closed or heavily restricted across much of the Gulf, passengers have been stranded not only in the region but also in cities far from the fighting after their connecting flights were canceled.

“They say ‘Get out,’ but how do you expect us to get out when airspaces are closed?” said Odies Turner, a 32-year-old chef from Dallas who was stuck in Doha, Qatar. “They just have been canceling every flight. I want to go home.”

The U.S.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-united-states-trump-strikes-6c602da7d44cb8c34fa1a9f85f352e4a">told American citizens</a>&nbsp;to leave more than a dozen countries&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-war-israel-strait-or-hormuz-deaths-f1619c6bfbbd5fe10857ff0af073aa0e">in the region</a>&nbsp;right away using any available commercial transportation. The countries include Iran and Israel, as well as Qatar, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, the Palestinian territories, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

More than 19,000 of the roughly 51,600 flights scheduled into and out of the Middle East between the start of the war and Friday have been canceled, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/embassies-iran-state-department-strikes-travel-1ce7865cb17bf201025aab98a17afb74">The U.S. State Department</a>&nbsp;said Tuesday it was “actively securing” military and charter aircraft to fly Americans out of the region. It said it was in contact with nearly 3,000 citizens seeking assistance or information.

“We know that we’re going to be able to help them,” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters Tuesday, while cautioning that “it’s going to take a little time because we don’t control the airspace closures.”

Rubio urged stranded Americans to contact the State Department: “We need to know who you are.”

Earlier in the day, U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee said the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem was “not in a position at this time to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel.” He provided information ”as a courtesy to those wishing to leave” about an Israeli government shuttle bus to Egypt that Americans could try “as you make your own security plans.”

Israel’s airspace has been closed since Saturday, although some land crossings remain open.

El Al, Israel’s flag carrier, said it was launching a large-scale “recovery operation.” Transportation Minister Miri Regev said Ben-Gurion Airport is preparing to gradually reopen for limited incoming flights starting early Thursday.

Under the plan, one passenger flight per hour will be allowed in the first 24 hours — totaling about 5,000 people — with more possible depending on security conditions. It is unclear whether only Israelis will be permitted on the flights, and no commercial departures leaving Israel have been approved.

Australia said a commercial flight from Dubai to Sydney was scheduled Wednesday to start repatriating 24,000 Australians stranded in the UAE.

“This is a consular crisis that dwarfs any that Australia has had to deal with in terms of numbers of people,” Foreign Minister Penny Wong told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Across the Middle East, travelers waited in terminals and hotels, or&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lebanon-israel-hezbollah-6c73ef0f5836632a2d2b34145900c28b">stayed inside because of airstrikes</a>. Some cruise passengers were unable to disembark or reroute because ships could not&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/strait-hormuz-iran-energy-war-5b60e82ef2fc68e2b43aa570a32404dd">sail through the Strait of Hormuz.</a>

Matt Carwell, an American staying in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-israel-us-dubai-emirates-tourism-attack-b256f514b290c987b3004cc87744f038">Dubai</a>, was speaking with The Associated Press by phone from his hotel balcony when he suddenly stopped midsentence.

“Wow,” the 46-year-old said. “There was just a boom.” A fighter jet roared overhead moments later.

Carwell, who volunteers at a New Hampshire school, has flights booked and keeps waiting for one that doesn’t get canceled.

“Right now, we’re safe and comfortable,” he said, but not everyone is. “Just feel for them and feel for the people who have either lost their lives or lost someone they’re close to.”

Airspace across Iran, Iraq, Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Syria were still shut Tuesday, according to flight-tracking service Flightradar24. The UAE declared its airspace partially closed, and Jordan suspended flights daily from the mid-afternoon until 6 a.m. local time.

The geography of the war has magnified the disruption to air travel. Gulf airports connect Europe, Africa and Asia, and carriers routinely funnel long-haul passengers through hubs such as Dubai and Doha.

“Within the Middle East, an eight-hour flying distance covers two-thirds of the world population,” said Anita Mendiratta, an aviation and tourism consultant who was stranded in Bangkok. When that corridor is blocked, Mendiratta said, it forces planes far north or south, which “puts huge pressure on the airlines.”

Some of the aviation notices governing the closures allow authorities to reopen or restrict portions of airspace on short notice depending on security conditions, meaning flight schedules can change rapidly as the conflict continues to unfold.

Despite the uncertainty, some travelers have managed to catch flights.

Oman Airways advertised flights from Muscat International Airport for passengers able to reach the city from the UAE. Virgin Atlantic said it planned to resume limited service between London Heathrow and both Dubai and Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.

Oman’s airspace remained open, while Saudi Arabia kept most of its airspace operating despite partial closures near its border with Iraq and along the Persian Gulf — making Muscat and Riyadh key staging points for repatriation efforts.

Travelers scramble as Iran war strands thousands across the Middle East

MARION COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged child sex crimes involving a teacher.

On February 23, the Marion County Sheriff's office Lt. Detective Aaron Christner received a report on inappropriate communication between a student and a teacher from Peabody-Burns High School, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

The investigation revealed the teacher had sexual contact with a student. With assistance from the Kansas Internet Crimes Against Children's Task Force, further evidence was discovered. On Tuesday, 30-year-old Brett T.&nbsp; McGee was arrested. He was booked into jail just before noon Wednesday, according to online jail records.&nbsp; &nbsp;He is listed as the&nbsp;Vocational Agriculture teacher at Peabody-Burns USD 398, according to the school web site.

The Marion County Sheriff asked that anyone with additional information on the case or any other mistreatment of a child to call them.

Just after 7:30p.m. Monday, police responded to report of a shooting in the parking lot of the&nbsp; American Legion in the 1300 Block of North Hydraulic in Wichita. According to an online statement from police, the suspect called 911 and reported he had just shot someone.

First responders found the&nbsp; shooting victim,&nbsp;56-year-old Darnell Guiden of Wichita,&nbsp;inside a 1998 Chevrolet pickup. EMS transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased just before 8p.m.

The suspect, identified from county booking records as 40-year-old Tristan D. Miles, was taken into custody without incident. He had previously been banned from the business from a previous incident, according to police.

He is being held on requested charges of first-degree premeditated murder and criminal discharge of a firearm.&nbsp; The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Georgia law defines second-degree murder as causing the death of a child by committing the crime of cruelty to children. Gray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the killings of teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53.

Another teacher and eight other students were wounded. Gray was also convicted of multiple counts of reckless conduct and cruelty to children.

He showed little emotion as the verdict was read and each juror was polled by the judge. Deputies then handcuffed him behind his back as he stood at the defense table, consulting with his lawyer. He will be sentenced at a later date. Second-degree murder is punishable by at least 10 but no more than 30 years in prison, while involuntary manslaughter carries a penalty of one to 10 years in prison.

Some relatives of victims wept as the verdicts were read. They declined to comment after court. Gray’s defense lawyers left without speaking to reporters.

“We talk a lot about rights in our country,” Barrow County District Attorney Brad Smith said after the verdict. “But God gave us a duty to protect our children, and I hope that we remember that, as parents, as community members, to protect our children because that is our God-given duty.”

The teen's mother, Marcee Gray, wasn't charged.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/georgia-school-shooting-trial-colin-gray-82af44f531a374c3480b4fd6aaac6454">She testified that she had urged her estranged husband</a>&nbsp;to take any guns and lock them inside his truck so they would not be not accessible to their son. Prosecutors said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/apalachee-high-school-colin-colt-gray-04346f61a8fc8cba2520343866c56eb6">Gray gave his son, Colt, the gun as a Christmas gift</a>&nbsp;and allowed him access to it along with ammunition despite the boy's deteriorating mental health. They said he had “sufficient warning that Colt Gray would harm and endanger” other people.

Fourteen at the time of the shooting, Colt Gray pleaded not guilty to a total of 55 counts, including murder. His judge set a status hearing for mid-March.

Investigators said Colt Gray carefully planned the Sept. 4, 2024, shooting at the school attended by 1,900 students.

He boarded the school bus with a semiautomatic, assault-style rifle in his book bag, the barrel sticking out and wrapped in poster board, investigators said. He left his second-period class and emerged from a bathroom with the gun and then shot people in a classroom and hallways, investigators said.

Colin Gray knew his son was obsessed with school shooters, even having a shrine in his bedroom to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/nikolas-cruz">Nikolas Cruz</a>, the shooter in the 2018 massacre at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, prosecutors said.

“It wasn’t like one parent missed one warning,” Smith told reporters. “This was multiple warnings over a lengthy period of time and, like we said, you just had to do one thing — take that rifle away and this would have been prevented.”

Jennifer and James Crumbley, the first U.S. parents held criminally responsible for a mass school shooting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pontiac-michigan-oxford-high-school-shooting-crime-shootings-ff69e26f96bb07af5dcb76bddc650bb4">committed by a child,</a>&nbsp;are serving&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/james-crumbley-jennifer-crumbley-oxford-school-shooting-e5888f615c76c3b26153c34dc36d5436">10-year prison terms</a>&nbsp;for involuntary manslaughter after their son Ethan killed four students and wounded others in Michigan in 2021.

Colin Gray was the first such parent to be charged in Georgia. Smith said Marcee Gray had seen what happened in Michigan and asked her husband to remove the weapons as a result. “So Michigan was able to move the needle to the point that it almost stopped this tragedy,” he said. “We hope we’ve moved the needle a little further.”

History: Father who gave gun to school shooting suspect convicted of murder

Salina man with outstanding warrants and riding bicycle on wrong side of roadway, gives wrong name to law enforcement before arrest.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Sunday just before 7:00 pm, an officer on patrol in the 100 block of S. College conducted a traffic stop on a man riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the road.&nbsp;

Upon the stop, the man identified himself as the wrong person. The officer then identified him as 55-year old, Robert Webb who had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

The officer arrested Webb and found him to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Webb was booked into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of:

Possession of Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia, Obstruction, Improper Driving on laned roadway and outstanding warrants for Probation Violation (Saline Co. District Court) and Failure to appear (Salina Municipal Court).

Some of the United States' most important historical documents began a first-of-its kind journey Monday as part of the country's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/250th-anniversary-us-july-4-celebration-semiquincentennial-e35a3f57b952663f60056c24d0e6a7f0">250th anniversary</a>&nbsp;commemoration.

Typically housed in highly controlled vaults under the watch of preservation experts at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/america-250-declaration-of-independence-democracy-d49050f62425ed6ddecc5dfb42ba8a20">National Archives</a>, documents such as the 1783 Treaty of Paris that formally ended the Revolutionary War and the 1774 Articles of Association that urged colonists to boycott British goods are rarely moved.

But those documents, signed by George Washington, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and other American revolutionary leaders, will be making their way&nbsp;<a href="https://www.archives.gov/press/press-releases/2026/nr26-1">across the country</a>&nbsp;and put on display for free at local museums.

“It's tangible history, and tangible history inspires,” said Jim Byron, senior adviser to the acting archivist of the United States. “These documents have not traveled, and they’ve certainly not traveled collectively, ever. They are here in vaults.”

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.boeing.com/company/about-bca/washington/boeing-backs-america--freedom-plane-to-touch-down-in-seattle">Boeing 737 “Freedom Plane”</a>&nbsp;transporting the documents is just one of many events and activities planned across the country to mark America's upcoming 250th anniversary celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. A congressionally chartered commission,&nbsp;<a href="https://america250.org/">America 250</a>, and a separate White House-led initiative, called&nbsp;<a href="https://freedom250.org/">Freedom 250</a>, are both coordinating events, an overlap that has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/america-250-congress-spending-history-trump-9163856922b428f53a8e1a7c30a06a04">faced some criticism</a>&nbsp;in Washington.

Among the planned activities are a&nbsp;<a href="https://freedom250.org/events-calendar/freedom-truck-mobile-museums">fleet of mobile museums</a>&nbsp;driving across the country, a&nbsp;<a href="https://america250.org/our-american-story/">story collection initiative</a>&nbsp;and a Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. President Donald Trump has even announced plans for a “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-america-250th-birthday-iowa-e6fb5df832cdba107ae4e9c62f2577e9">Patriot Games</a>&nbsp;” sporting event featuring high school athletes and a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-ufc-white-house-america-250-a9a819e6610a8390b5d1a794c276d03e">UFC mixed-martial arts fight</a>&nbsp;at the White House.

The “Freedom Plane" is scheduled to depart Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Monday and head to its first stop in Kansas City, Missouri, where the documents will be transferred to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.theworldwar.org/">National WWI Museum and Memorial.</a>&nbsp;The records include a rare original engraving of the Declaration of Independence printed in 1823 from a copperplate of the original; the Oaths of Allegiance signed in 1778 by George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and other officers of the Continental Army; and a rare draft copy of the U.S. Constitution that includes handwritten notes by the delegates.

Other planned stops will be in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston, Denver, Miami, the Detroit suburb of Dearborn and Seattle.

“The reality that these documents are leaving D.C. and coming to the heartland is fantastic,” said Matt Naylor, president and CEO of the National World War I Museum and Memorial, where they will be on display for a little over two weeks starting Friday. “There's a lot of excitement about that and a lot of talk in and around the city about what that means.”

Naylor said the early response has been overwhelming. Local schools have already booked visits for more than 5,000 schoolchildren.

“That’s indicating that there’s a lot of enthusiasm for this,” he said.

The "Freedom Plane" tour was inspired in part by the “American Freedom Train” that toured 48 states in 1975 and 1976 as part of the country's bicentennial celebration. It carried various pieces of American history, including the original Louisiana Purchase documents, Judy Garland's dress from The Wizard of Oz and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jesse-owens-track-and-field-jennifer-song-michael-phelps-katie-ledecky-22ec8bac1a46e522d166eac63e3447a0">Jesse Owens'</a>&nbsp;gold medals from the 1936 Olympic Games.

Major historical documents start journey across US as part of nation's 250th anniversary celebration

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a shooting that sent a Kansas man to the hospital in critical condition have tracked down a suspect.

At about 12:15 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 400 block of N. Clara Street in Wichita, according to a media release. Officers arrived and found a 38-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Officers provided medical aid until EMS arrived.

EMS transported the victim to a local hospital in critical condition. He is expected to survive his injuries.&nbsp;

The incident started as an argument between the 38-year-old victim and a 21-year-old suspect identified in county booking records as Damien Michael Farias,&nbsp;while they sat in their vehicles outside the home of a 25-year-old Wichita woman.&nbsp;

The argument continued after both men got out of their vehicles. Farias pulled a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking the victim and a nearby residence, then left the scene before officers arrived.

Farias, the victim, and the woman knew each other.

&nbsp;Wichita Police Community Response Teams, the K-9 Unit and patrol officers began working to locate Farias.

At 7a.m. Sunday officers located Farias at a residence in north Wichita. He was taken into custody without incident. Officers also located the suspect’s vehicle in the 100 block of S. Sheridan. With assistance from a K-9, officers found a firearm in the area.&nbsp;

One suspect connected to stealing a vehicle from the Goodwill parking lot has been identified and is scheduled to appear in court, who was also booked for stabbing a woman multiple times

According to the Salina Police Department 42-year old, Alesha&nbsp;Martinez-Reavis has been has been identified to be connected in the vehicle theft of a 58-year old female victim back on January 11.

Martinez-Reavis was arrested on February 9 for the theft of the victim's vehicle. She is scheduled to appear in Saline County District Court on March 30 for the vehicle theft.

She was later then arrested on February 24 for allegedly stabbing a woman multiple times at her home.

A male is also a suspect in this case and has not yet been identified, according to SPD.&nbsp;

The search for the male suspect is currently ongoing, according to SPD.

Dickerson, known for hits including “Yours,” “Every Little Thing,” “Love You Like I Used To” and “God Gave Me a Girl,” has emerged as one of country music’s fast-rising performers. He is preparing to launch a European tour this spring, with stops in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz said the booking reflects an effort to blend established favorites with newer artists gaining national and international attention.

Tickets for the Sept. 18 concert range from $35 for general admission grandstand seating to $110 for VIP deck standing room, which includes two beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Reserved VIP tables for six are available for $835. Track seating is priced at $85, and reserved grandstand seats are $55.

Law enforcement arrested a man who had a warrant for his arrest after a conducted traffic stop.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday at around 3:00 pm, an officer on patrol in the area of north 9th street discovered a male individual that had a warrant for their arrest.

The individual was on his bicycle and the officer conducted a traffic stop in the 800 block of north Broadway.

The officer arrested 35-year old, Zachariah&nbsp;Behling and located more than a gram of&nbsp;methamphetamine in his possession.

He was booked into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of: Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of drug paraphernalia and the warrant out of Saline County District Court.

According to jail records, Behling was arrested back on <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/a5747ab1-f060-4b78-b14e-ba8d519329f2">August 2022 for stealing an electric bicycle and bike trailer.</a>
