Saline County Jail Activity, Nov. 1

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities and USD 501 officials are investigating an alleged school threat against a Kansas high school.

Just after 11p.m. Monday, the&nbsp;USD 501 Topeka Public Schools Police Department notified investigators from the Topeka Police Department&nbsp; of a threat made about a school shooting at Topeka West High School. 

Investigators were quick to identify and locate a 15-year-old who made the threat. Police arrested the girl&nbsp;and booked her into the Juvenile Detention Center on requested charges of Aggravated Criminal Threat.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of the Dillon Lecture Series at Hutchinson Community College, Dr. Temple Grandin spoke Tuesday about different kinds of thinkers.

"I've got a new book, Visual Thinking, I've got a couple of copies with me," Grandin said. "The Hidden Gifts of People Who Think in Pictures, Patterns, and Abstractions. Research shows, there's people like me that are object visualizers. Everything I think about's a picture. It's not words. My kind of mind is good at art, skilled trades, mechanical, all kinds of mechanical things, photography and working with animals. Animals don't think in words. The thing that my kind of mind is terrible at is algebra. You need us. If you want to have the infrastructure keep working? Let me tell you, you need us non-mathematicians. Then, when you go back to the food processing plant, my kind of mind makes all the mechanical equipment, but we need the mathematicians for boilers and refrigerations. I noticed you had a boiler factory here in town. You need both kinds of minds and you have your more mathematical, pattern thinker. Your pattern thinkers, music and math go together. In the visual thinking, art and mechanics go together. I know it sounds crazy, but, it's true. I write about it in my book."

Grandin said a lot of people are mixtures of the different kinds of thinking.

"When a kid gets a label, you tend to have, autism, dyslexia, ADHD, whatever, they tend to be much more uneven in skills," Grandin said. "An extreme object visualizer or an extreme mathematician. The verbal thinkers, one of the things they tend to do is over generalize. You have this big concept, like inclusive classroom, let's just say that. My mind thinks more bottom up. What are things I can do to make a classroom inclusive? Get bullying under control. Get rid of LED lights that flicker. Some of the people with head injuries, dyslexia and some other conditions have problems with the flicker of flourescent lights. You can find it with slow motion video on your phone. The other thing is, I have a very bad working memory. I do not remember long lists of verbal information. Tests that have a sequence, let me have a pilot's checklist."

Grandin did note that it is harder for people who think visually to succeed in traditional academics.

"The next Temple Grandin is getting screened out by the algebra requirement," Grandin said. "I am not kidding. I've talked to students who want to become veterinary nurses on their third algebra class. How about geometry? How about statistics, or maybe accounting, or maybe business math, practical math, like a shop. That's keeping a lot of them out, but you need us."

Grandin's latest book is a New York Times best-seller.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a deadly Sunday morning shooting outside a Wichita nightclub have captured the suspect identified as 33-year-old Terrence Johnson, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

Police reported the arrest just before 1p.m. Tuesday. Police have not reported details on the arrest.&nbsp;

At 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police were monitoring at Onyx, 10001 E. Kellogg in Wichita, when they heard multiple gunshots, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

First responders located 23-year-old Jaylon Pete of Wichita in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. EMS transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Two other individuals, a 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old man both of Wichita, were struck by gunfire during the shooting.&nbsp;They were transported to local area hospitals for treatment of serious non-life threatening injuries.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation suggest that the suspect now identified as Johnson was involved in a disturbance inside the club, according to Wichita Police Lt. Aaron Moses during a Monday news conference. Johnson went outside to get a handgun and attempted to re-enter the club. but was unable to do so due to safety measured implemented by the club management.

Through extensive investigation and tips from the public, police have probable cause to believe Johnson was the shooter Sunday morning, according to Lt. Moses.&nbsp;

Less than thirty minutes after the deadly shooting, police responded to a domestic violence call in the 1700 Block of North Pinecrest in Wichita. During the investigation of the call, officers arrested Johnson for alleged misdemeanor criminal damage to property.  Police had no information at that time Johnson was a suspect in the deadly nightclub shooting.

At 2:16a.m., officers booked Johnson into the Sedgwick County Jail for the criminal damage case and he bonded out just after 3:30a.m., according to online jail records. Police didn't identify him as a suspect in the nightclub killing until afternoon Sunday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The facts of this case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for formal charging consideration.

Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents and educators?

Effective collaboration is essential when it comes to implementing strategies within any organization. I would work together with my fellow board members to develop a comprehensive communication plan that includes both internal and external stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers, and the broader community.

I have a passion for public education and am an advocate for all students. I believe it is important to provide accessible, quality education and ensure that young people have the resources and support they need to succeed. Give a brief bio on yourself in 100 words or less: I am a former public school educator, having taught in the 305 and 307 school districts. I recently served as an adjunct professor for the education department at Bethany College for the past 3 years. I hold a master's degree in curriculum and instruction. I am currently the owner and instructor of Central Kansas ISR and I live in Saline County with my husband and son.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize or improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of students in our community? I would work alongside my fellow board members to improve education initiatives that are essential to the functions and daily operations of the public school system. Focusing on a high-quality education for all students in the district, working to improve teacher retention and recruitment, and all other important issues will be essential to our work on the school board. I will work with other elected school board members to make decisions that are student focused.

I am an advocate for literacy that offers a well-rounded education. However, I believe there are more important issues to discuss regarding improving rural education opportunities in USD 307. I will always be open to dialogue that improves the quality of our literacy education.

Open communication is important for all individuals in a school community. I will continue to encourage parents and teachers to keep an open line of communication to discuss celebrations, concerns, and suggestions for improvement.

I am running for school board because I believe that every child deserves to have a quality education. I am invested in my community and believe that serving on the school board is one way that I can serve my community and support our school system. I am currently the owner and instructor of Central Kansas ISR and I live in Saline County with my husband and son. As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize or improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of students in our community? I would work alongside my fellow board members to improve education initiatives that are essential to the functions and daily operations of the public school system. Focusing on a high-quality education for all students in the district, working to improve teacher retention and recruitment, and all other important issues will be essential to our work on the school board. I will work with other elected school board members to make decisions that are student focused. In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue?I am an advocate for literacy that offers a well-rounded education. However, I believe there are more important issues to discuss regarding improving rural education opportunities in USD 307. I will always be open to dialogue that improves the quality of our literacy education.Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents and educators?Open communication is important for all individuals in a school community. I will continue to encourage parents and teachers to keep an open line of communication to discuss celebrations, concerns, and suggestions for improvement. I am invested in my community and believe that serving on the school board is one way that I can serve my community and support our school system. WASHINGTON —On&nbsp;Monday, the President and First Lady are hosted a Halloween event that welcomed local public school students and military-connected children to the White House for trick-or-treating.&nbsp;

A teacher for more than three decades, including years spent as a reading specialist, First Lady Jill Biden created this year’s theme, “Hallo-READ!,” with the White House’s festive décor featuring famous literary characters, ghoulish tales, and ghost story time. Dr. Biden’s theme encourages families and children to grab a flashlight, pick out their favorite Halloween book, and relish in the spooktacular thrill of reading together.&nbsp;

Children were able to trick-or-treat along the South Lawn of the White House up to the South Portico to receive both candy and books from the President and First Lady, as well as other White House friends and neighbors, including representatives from: the Department of Education, Department of Transportation, Department of State, Department of Agriculture, Department of the Treasury, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Energy, Department of Housing and Urban Development, FEMA, NASA, National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, Environmental Protection Agency, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, United States Secret Service,&nbsp;White House staff, and the White House Military Office.&nbsp; Children will also get to participate in spooky story time with special guests reading their favorite books of the season.&nbsp;

Approximately 8,000 guests participated in this year’s Halloween event at the White House, with each family receiving chocolate and candy treats provided by the National Confectioners Association and its member companies.

 In a nod to this year’s “Hallo-READ!” theme, each family also received donated books from Scholastic to read and enjoy. Instacart provided overall support for the Halloween celebration, in addition to supplying Halloween tote bags and treats to each child. In the spirit of hands-on learning, the company will also distribute recipe cards to teach children and their families how to make deliciously spooky, easy Halloween-themed treats together. 

Costumed characters strolled the South Lawn for the Halloween festivities, including Clifford the Big Red Dog, Greg Heffley from&nbsp;Diary of a Wimpy Kid, as well as Disney friends Doc McStuffins, Vampirina, and Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers.

First Lady welcomes Trick-or-Treaters to the White House for “Hallo-READ

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a deadly Sunday morning shooting outside a Wichita nightclub continue the search for the shooter identified as 33-year-old Terrence Johnson. 

Police arrested him minutes after the shooting in connection with another crime involving his family. He was booked into jail for the misdemeanor and released before investigators determined he was the alleged nightclub killer.

Just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police were monitoring at Onyx 10001  E. Kellogg when they heard multiple gunshots, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

Through extensive investigation and tips from the public, police have probable cause to believe Johnson was the shooter Sunday morning, according to Lt. Moses. Police continue to ask the public for help to find him. He should be considered armed and dangerous.

Less than thirty minutes after the deadly shooting, police responded to a domestic violence call in the 1700 Block of North Pinecrest in Wichita. During the investigation of the call, officers arrested Johnson for alleged misdemeanor criminal damage to property.&nbsp; Police had no information at that time Johnson was a suspect in the deadly nightclub shooting.&nbsp;

Saline County Booking, Oct. 29, 30

BEAVER COUNTY, Oklahoma—Law enforcement authorities&nbsp; investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at Central Station Bar and Grill, 207 E Wyatt Earp Blvd., Dodge City, have captured a suspect, according to a media release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Deputies captured 36-year-old Ricardo Cadena-Garcia of Dodge City in Oklahoma. He is believed connected to a shooting that killed two men and injured two others.

Kansas authorities tracked Cadena-Garcia as he fled into Oklahoma. The Beaver County (Oklahoma) Sheriff’s Office sent deputies to search the area. They located Cadena-Garcia’s vehicle 1.5 miles outside of Forgan, Oklahoma. 

The truck was disabled due to a blown front tire. Cadena-Garcia was waiting for assistance from an area tire shop when deputies approached his truck. He was arrested without incident.

Cadena-Garcia was booked into the Beaver County Jail. Formal charges are pending, according to the KBI.

FORD COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at a restaurant and bar in Dodge City, according to a media release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Just after 1 a.m., 911 calls were placed reporting shots being fired at Central Station Bar and Grill,&nbsp; 207 E. Wyatt Earp Blvd., in Dodge City. When officers from the Dodge City Police Department and deputies from the Ford County Sheriff’s Office arrived they found four men who had suffered gunshot wounds.

Preliminary information indicates that an altercation occurred and the suspect, 36-year-old Ricardo Johary Cadena-Garcia used a small caliber handgun to shoot and kill a 29-year-old man. 

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Cadena-Garcia fired additional rounds that struck three additional male victims, and then fled the area.

EMS responded and transported the three shooting victims to an area hospital. Soon after, a 28-year-old man was also pronounced deceased. 

The 40-year-old man was flown to a Wichita hospital with life-threatening injuries. The fourth man, who was 27-years-old, was treated and has been released from the hospital.

Anyone who sees the suspect or this vehicle is asked to immediately call 911. He is suspected to be armed and dangerous. KBI: Deputies capture suspect wanted for deadly SW Kan. shooting

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an altercation at the sheriff's office.

Just before 3 p.m.,&nbsp; Friday a man later identified as 28-year-old Lee Shelton Leon of Great Bend entered the Barton County Sheriff’s Office administrative offices at 1416 Kansas Avenue in Great Bend carrying a rifle, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

 Leon was angry because Sheriff’s deputies had served him a “protection from abuse order” earlier in the day.

The suspect threatened Sheriff’s Office personnel and appeared to be extremely agitated. Undersheriff Steve Billinger disarmed the suspect and with the assistance of Lieutenant David Paden and Great Bend Police Department Detective Jefferson Davis, Leon was subdued and arrested. 

There were no injuries to the suspect or Sheriff’s personnel because of this incident. The weapon was later determined to be an air rifle.

Leon was booked into the Barton County Jail on requested charges of aggravated assault of law enforcement officer, aggravated assault (civilian personnel) as well as other charges. He’s being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond, according to Bellendir.

My name is J.D. Garber and I am a Sales Associate at Farm Bureau Financial Services. I am a people person and enjoy working with our clients. I graduated from Kansas State University in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education. While teaching and coaching in USD 305 I earned my master's degree from Emporia State in education administration in 2012. I taught English and Journalism for 15 years at Salina Central. My wife Lindsay and I have three children; Marcella, Gabby, and Jett.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize or improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of students in our community? &nbsp;As a school board member, I believe we have a unique opportunity in USD 307. I’m from a small town rural high school and loved the education I received there. I would prioritize teacher and support staff recruitment as well as facility improvement. Building on the excellent staff and history in Brookville is key to developing an outstanding learning environment.

I believe there are bigger issues for us to focus on in education and in our student's lives. I love reading and appreciate the dialogue we can have as teachers, parents, and students when we find content that exposes the reality of the world we live in.

Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents and educators?

&nbsp;I completely agree and believe parental engagement and community involvement are very important. I also feel that in today’s educational system communication must be clear, easily accessible, and from multiple sources. USD 307 administration is already communicating in multiple ways and we will continue to look at improving this. Families in 307 need to be in our school. I would hope to improve parent/teacher conferences as well as encourage our leaders to create ways for parents to participate in their student's education.

Please explain why you are running for city commission.

 I am running for school board because I believe I can help improve the educational experience in USD307. I also have two students attending school in our district. I’m excited for the opportunity to find ways to rethink rural education. As a longtime Salina based educator I’m looking forward to being back in the school system.

KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) — The NFL placed Kansas City Chiefs receiver Justyn Ross on the Commissioner Exempt List on Friday, three days after he pleaded not guilty to charges of misdemeanor domestic battery and criminal damage to property.

Ross is not allowed to practice or attend games while on the list.

Ross was released from jail Tuesday after posting $2,500 bond. He is due again in court on Dec. 4. The Chiefs said they were aware of his arrest but had no comment.

Ross was arrested Monday, and the sheriff’s office in Johnson County, Kansas, originally indicated on his booking record that he was accused of causing damage of up to $25,000, which would have been a felony. That total was adjusted to under $1,000.

The 23-year-old Ross has been a bit player for the defending Super Bowl champions this season. He has been active in their first seven games but has just three catches for 34 yards.

The fact that he is playing at all is noteworthy. After a standout first two seasons at Clemson, Ross was found to have a congenital fusion condition in his neck and spinal area that required career-threatening surgery. Ross returned to play another season for the Tigers, then turned professional, where the Chiefs were one of the few teams willing to clear him medically to play.

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Maine’s governor says 18 people were killed and 13 were injured in shootings in Maine. Gov. Janet Mills made the remarks at a press conference Thursday.

A man shot and killed the victims at a bowling alley and restaurant in Lewiston and then fled into the night, sparking a massive search by hundreds of officers while frightened residents stayed locked in their homes Thursday under a shelter-in-place advisory.

Mills said the shooting suspect, Robert Card, is considered armed and dangerous, warns people not to approach him.

A police bulletin identified Card, 40, as a person of interest in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/maine-shooting-what-we-know-40e373f7f2f0e0fb012ad4b26f4b78cd">the attack in Lewiston that sent panicked bowlers scrambling</a>&nbsp;behind pins, into corners and a back room when shots rang out around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Card was described as a firearms instructor believed to be in the U.S. Army Reserve and assigned to a training facility in Saco, Maine.

The document, circulated to law enforcement officials, said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. It did not provide details about his treatment or condition but said Card had reported “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” the military base. A telephone number listed for Card in public records was not in service.

Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said the bowling alley shooting happened first.

Earlier, Lewiston Police said that they were dealing with an active shooter incident at Schemengees Bar and Grille and at Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) away. A number of parents and children were at Sparetime as part of a children's bowling league.

One bowler, who identified himself only as Brandon, said he heard about 10 shots, thinking the first was a balloon popping.

“I had my back turned to the door. And as soon as I turned and saw it was not a balloon — he was holding a weapon — I just booked it,” he told The Associated Press.

Brandon said he scrambled down the length of the alley, sliding into the pin area and climbing up to hide in the machinery.

“I was putting on my bowling shoes when when it started. I’ve been barefoot for five hours,” he said.

The bowling alley is home to traditional tenpin bowling as well as candlepin, a variant of bowling found in New England. It’s located about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) north of the Bates College campus, on the outskirts of downtown. The alley has a small bar and is popular for local bowling leagues and children’s parties.

Wednesday was “industry night” at Schemengees Bar and Grille, with 25% discounts offered to customers who work in the bar or restaurant industry.

“In a split second your world gets turn upside down for no good reason,” the business posted online, saying “great people in this community” were lost.

After the shooting, police, many armed with rifles, took up positions while the city descended into eerie quiet — punctuated by occasional sirens — as people hunkered down at home. Schools as far away as Kennebunk, more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Lewiston, closed out of caution on Thursday. And schools and public buildings were closed in Portland, the state’s largest city.

Bates and Bowdoin colleges canceled classes, as did the Gorham and Portland campuses of the University of Southern Maine.

Diana Florence said her son, a sophomore at Bates College, stayed in his dorm with his roommate with the blinds closed. Her daughter is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which was locked down twice last month, once when a professor was killed and again two weeks later when a man brandished a gun in the student union building.

“I could not believe it – that this is happening again. It’s happening to my son after it just happened to my daughter,” she said in a phone interview Thursday.

Ten-year-old Zoey Levesque, who was at the bowling alley with her mother, told WMTW-TV she was grazed by a bullet.
