Today in History - November 17

WICHITA – AAA predicts 54.6 million people nationwide will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving. That’s a 1.5% increase over 2021 and 98% of pre-pandemic volumes. This year is projected to be the third busiest for Thanksgiving travel since AAA started tracking in 2000*. In Kansas, travelers will be out on the roads and in the air as more than 581,000 Kansans plans to travel over the holiday weekend. That’s an increase of 1.2% over last year.

“Families and friends are eager to spend time together this Thanksgiving, one of the busiest for travel in the past two decades,” says Paula Twidale, AAA’s Senior Vice President of Travel. “Plan ahead and pack your patience, whether you’re driving or flying.”  

Most travelers will drive to their destinations, much like last year. Nearly 49 million people are expected to travel by car. While Thanksgiving road trips have slightly risen - up 0.4% from 2021 - car travel remains 2.5% below 2019 levels. Locally in Kansas, more than 525,000 will be traveling by car – the most popular mode, but just a slight increase of 0.2% from a year ago.

Air travel is up nearly 8% over 2021, with 4.5 million Americans flying to their Thanksgiving destinations this year. That’s an increase of more than 330,000 travelers and nearly 99% of the 2019 volume. For Kansans, air travel is up also – with more than 29,000 people flying – similar to the national trend, an increase of 7.4%.

“Airport parking spaces fill up fast, so reserve a spot ahead of time and arrive early,” Twidale suggests. “Anticipate long TSA lines. If possible, avoid checking a bag to allow for more flexibility if flights are delayed or you need to reschedule.”&nbsp;

Americans are also ramping up travel by other modes of transportation. More than 1.4 million travelers are going out of town for Thanksgiving by bus, train, or cruise ship. That’s an increase of 23% from 2021 and 96% of the 2019 volume.&nbsp;Much like others across the country, more Kansans will journey these ways, too, with more than 26,000 people – an increase of 27% - traveling by bus, trains or cruises.

“With travel restrictions lifted and more people comfortable taking public transportation again, it’s no surprise buses, trains, and cruises are coming back in a big way,” Twidale adds. “Regardless of the mode of transportation you have chosen, expect crowds during your trip and at your destination. If your schedule is flexible, consider off-peak travel times during the holiday rush.”&nbsp;

Busiest corridors and best/worst times to travel INRIX expects severe congestion in several U.S. metro areas, with some drivers experiencing more than double normal delays. Highways in and around Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles will be the busiest. To avoid the most hectic times, INRIX recommends traveling early in the morning on Wednesday or before 11am on Thanksgiving Day and avoiding travel between 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Thanksgiving is one of the busiest holidays for road trips, and this year will be no different,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst, INRIX. “Although travel times will peak on Wednesday afternoon nationally, travelers should expect much heavier than normal congestion throughout the holiday weekend. Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic.”&nbsp;

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Former President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;said Tuesday that he will mount a third White House campaign, launching an early start to the 2024 contest. The announcement comes just a week after an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-donald-trump-00c770068d8b82f165a9f4871eee983b">underwhelming midterm showing for Republicans</a>&nbsp;and will force the party to decide whether to embrace a candidate whose refusal to accept defeat in 2020&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">pushed American democracy to the brink.</a>

“I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump said to an audience of several hundred supporters, club members and gathered press in a chandeliered ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago club, where he stood flanked by more than 30 American flags and banners that read, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump enters the race in a moment of political vulnerability. He hoped to launch his campaign in the wake of resounding GOP midterm victories, fueled by candidates he elevated during this year’s primaries. Instead, many of those candidates lost, allowing Democrats to keep the Senate and leaving the GOP with a path to only a bare majority in the House.

Far from the undisputed leader of the party, Trump is now facing criticism from some of his own allies, who say it’s time for Republicans to look to the future, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis emerging as an early favorite White House contender.

The former president is still popular with the GOP base. But other Republicans, including former Vice President Mike Pence, are taking increasingly public steps toward campaigns of their own, raising the prospect that Trump will have to navigate a competitive GOP primary.

He’s launching his candidacy amid a series of escalating criminal investigations, including several that could lead to indictments. They include the probe into dozens of documents with classified markings that were seized by the FBI from Mar-a-Lago and ongoing state and federal inquiries into his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Another campaign is a remarkable turn for any former president, much less one who made history as the first to be impeached twice and whose term ended with his supporters violently storming the Capitol in a deadly bid to halt the peaceful transition of power on Jan. 6, 2021.

But Trump, according to people close to him, has been eager to return to politics and try to halt the rise of other potential challengers. Aides have spent the last months readying paperwork, identifying potential staff and sketching out the contours of a campaign that is being modeled on his 2016 operation, when a small clutch of aides zipping between rallies on his private jet defied the odds and defeated far better-funded and more experienced rivals by tapping into deep political fault lines and using shocking statements to drive relentless media attention.

Even after GOP losses, Trump remains the most powerful force in his party. For years he has consistently topped his fellow Republican contenders by wide margins in hypothetical head-to-head matchups. And even out of office, he consistently attracts thousands to his rallies and remains his party’s most prolific fundraiser, raising hundreds of millions of dollars.

But Trump is also a deeply polarizing figure. Fifty-four percent of voters in last week’s midterm elections viewed him very or somewhat unfavorably, according to AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 94,000 voters nationwide. And an October AP-NORC poll found even Republicans have their reservations about him remaining the party’s standard-bearer, with 43% saying they don’t want to see him run for president in 2024.

Trump’s candidacy poses profound questions about America’s democratic future. The final days of his presidency were consumed by a desperate effort to stay in power, undermining the centuries-old tradition of a peaceful transfer. And in the two years since he lost, Trump’s persistent — and baseless — lies about widespread election fraud have eroded confidence in the nation’s political process. By late January 2021, about two-thirds of Republicans said they did not believe President Joe Biden was legitimately elected in 2020, an AP-NORC poll found.

VoteCast showed roughly as many Republican voters in the midterm elections continued to hold that belief.

Federal and state election officials and Trump’s own attorney general have said there is no credible evidence the 2020 election was tainted. The former president’s allegations of fraud were also roundly rejected by numerous courts, including by judges Trump appointed.

But that didn’t stop hundreds of midterm candidates from parroting his lies as they sought to win over his loyal base and score his coveted endorsement. In the end, many of those candidates went on to lose their races in a sign that voters rejected such extreme rhetoric.

While some Republicans with presidential ambitions, like former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, have long ruled out running against Trump, others have said he would not figure into their decisions, even before his midterm losses.

They include Pence, who released a book Tuesday, and Trump’s former secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, as well as former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who ran against Trump in 2016. Other potential candidates include Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin. Trump is also likely to face challenges from members of the anti-Trump wing of the party like Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, vice chair of the House committee that has been investigating Jan. 6.

But the person who has most occupied Trump and his allies in recent months is DeSantis, whose commanding reelection as governor last week was a bright spot for Republicans this cycle. The former congressman, who became a popular national figure among conservatives during the pandemic as he pushed back on COVID-19 restrictions, shares Trump’s pugilistic instincts and has embraced fights over social issues with similar zeal.

Even some enthusiastic Trump supporters say they are eager for DeSantis to run, seeing him as a natural successor to Trump but without the former president’s considerable baggage.

Trump has already begun to lash out at DeSantis publicly. On Tuesday, the Florida governor shot back.

“At the end of the day, I would just tell people to go check out the scoreboard from last Tuesday night,” DeSantis told reporters.

A crowded field of GOP rivals could ultimately play to Trump’s advantage, as it did in 2016, when he prevailed over more than a dozen other candidates who splintered the anti-Trump vote.

Trump’s decision paves the way for a potential rematch with Biden, who has said he intends to run for reelection despite concerns from some in his party over his age and low approval ratings. The two men were already the oldest presidential nominees ever when they ran in 2020. Trump, who is 76, would be 82 at the end of a second term in 2029. Biden, who is about to turn 80, would be 86.

If he is ultimately successful, Trump would be just the second U.S. president in history to serve two nonconsecutive terms, following Grover Cleveland’s wins in 1884 and 1892.

But Trump enters the race facing enormous challenges beyond his party’s growing trepidations. The former president is the subject of numerous investigations, including the monthslong probe into the hundreds of documents with classified markings found in boxes at Mar-a-Lago.

Meanwhile, Trump is facing Justice Department scrutiny over efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. In Georgia, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is investigating what she alleges was “a multi-state, coordinated plan by the Trump Campaign” to influence the 2020 results.

And in New York, Attorney General Letitia James has sued Trump, alleging his namesake company engaged in decades’ worth of fraudulent bookkeeping by misleading banks about the value of his assets. The Trump Organization is also now on trial, facing criminal tax fraud charges.

Some in Trump’s orbit believe that running will help shield him against potential indictment, but there is no legal statute that would prevent the Justice Department from moving forward — or prevent Trump from continuing to run if he is charged.

It wasn’t any secret what he had been planning.

At a White House Christmas party in December 2020, Trump told guests it had “been an amazing four years.”

“We are trying to do another four years,” he said. “Otherwise, I’ll see you in four years.”

Aides have spent the last months readying paperwork, identifying potential staff and sketching out the contours of a campaign that is being modeled on his 2016 operation, when a small clutch of aides zipping between rallies on his private jet defied the odds and defeated far better-funded and more experienced rivals by tapping into deep political fault lines and using shocking statements to drive relentless media attention.Even after GOP losses, Trump remains the most powerful force in his party. Our mother, Hildegard Agnes Krieger Thiessen, lived a long and full life. She passed from this life on November 12, 2022 just one day shy of her 94th birthday. On Saturday she took her last earthly breath and on Sunday she celebrated her birthday in her heavenly home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Hildegard was born to Leonard and Agatha Krieger on November 13, 1928. They lived on a farm outside of Cordell, OK, enduring the very difficult days of the Dust bowl. Hildegard was the eldest of four children which included her brothers Edgar and Norbert, and her sister Nelda. 

Education was important to Hildegard and her parents. After completing grade school at the MK &amp; T Grade School, she was able to continue her high school education at Corn Bible Academy in Corn, OK. Because this was a twenty-mile drive from her home, Hildegard was able to board with several different families in town during her high school years. At home on the weekends and during her summer breaks, Hildegard was able to do the mowing at the local cemetery which she enjoyed. This job enabled her earn enough money to buy fabric which she sewed into the clothing she needed for school.

After graduating from Corn Bible Academy in 1947, Hildegard was given the opportunity to continue her education at Tabor College. This was a privilege that not many of her peers were offered or even desired, but she relished. She graduated from Tabor College in 1951. Her education allowed her opportunities to work in different business ventures throughout her adult life.

In January of 1951,while working in the Tabor bookstore, Hildegard met a young man who came to buy a textbook which he couldn’t afford. Although Wilmer Thiessen didn’t get that book, he got something much more precious - a lifelong relationship with his future wife. 

After Tabor, their relationship continued across the miles via correspondence from Hillsboro to Denver, CO where Wilmer was working. In January of 1954 he traveled to Hillsboro and surprised Hildegard with his unexpected visit and a proposal, which she accepted. They were married at the Bessie Mennonite Brethren Church outside of Cordell, OK on June 6, 1954.

Their life together took them from Hillsboro, to Denver, to Henderson, NE and back to Denver. Together they formed many long-term friendships through church and work. They lived a happy life in Denver and Littleton, Colorado for the next 20 years. During this time they added to their family. Charlene was born in 1955 (during their time living in Henderson, NE), Lynette joined the family in 1958, Shaun in 1961 and Vonda in 1965.

After 20 years in the Denver and Littleton area, Wilmer was offered a job at the Mennonite Brethren Missions Office in Hillsboro, Kansas. They moved the family in June 1974. During the next 40-some years, Hildegard was again able to work Tabor College in the business Office, and just before she retired she ran The Bookstore on Main Street which brought her much fulfillment.

In September of 2018, Wilmer and Hildegard made the decision to move to Wichita, KS to be closer to their children because of Hildegard’s diagnosis of dementia. They enjoyed two years together in their new home at Kansas Masonic Home. After caring for his bride of 66 years, Wilmer passed away on December 19, 2020. Hildegard continued residing at KMH until her death.

Hildegard is preceded in death by her husband Wilmer; her parents Leonard and Agatha Krieger; and her brother Edgar.

She is survived by her children Charlene (Fred DeLoera) Thiessen, Lynette (Dwight) Roth, Shaun (Karen) Thiessen, and Vonda (Duane) Kinser; her grandchildren Aaron (Alena) Almendarez, Jessie (Adam) Hartke, Sandy (David Snyir) Almendarez, Alex Thiessen, Zac Thiessen, Andrew (Kayla) Kinser and Daniel Kinser; her great-grandchildren Henry Hartke, Asa Almendarez, Garrett Snyir and Leona Snyir; and her sister Nelda (Virgil) Thiessen, and her brother Norbert (Sylvia) Krieger.

ST. MARYS — Pottawatomie
 Wabaunsee Regional Library is decorated for the holidays, with a 
snow-filled tiny Christmas village placed in the center of the book 
stacks. There’s a princess mural on one wall, complete with a unicorn, 
and a dinosaur figurine over by the children’s nook.

The city council is debating whether 
to renew the library’s lease with the city following the library’s 
refusal to accept a lease clause asking it to remove all material that 
could be viewed as socially, racially or sexually divisive, including 
all LGBTQ content.

The library has been housed in St. 
Marys since the 1980s, operating on an annual lease with the city. The 
library serves eight locations, including Alma, Alta Vista, Eskridge, 
Harveyville, Olsburg, Onaga, St. Marys and Westmoreland, with county 
residents funding the library through taxes.

The St. Marys branch acts as the 
headquarters, with a designated “mini librarian” delivering books from 
the library to all other eight locations, visiting them each week.

If the lease — which ends late December — isn’t
 renewed, the library will have to pack up hundreds of books and 
equipment and move to another town, as there’s no other space in St. 
Marys that would be able to accommodate the library’s operations.

St. Marys resident Hannah Stockman, a
 stay-at-home mom looking after 13 kids, said the move would be 
devastating for her and others like her.

“At
 this point, it’s the only space left that we have for the public,” 
Stockman said. “We don’t have any pool or any other amenities through 
the community center. So people come here for many, many different 
reasons.”

Stockman said the library is one of 
the few places where her whole family can go together. Her children have
 become excited about reading and have been entertained by several of 
the library’s programs, as they were given coloring pages and other 
things. Stockman loves learning and put together an education program 
for herself using the library’s materials.

“Some of them are learning how to 
read and some of them don’t really want to read, but they come here and 
they get excited. I can’t provide that for them any other way,” Stockman
 said. “It just feels good to be here.”

Discussion of the library removal 
started this summer after a local parent was upset by the contents of 
“Melissa,” a book about a transgender child written by Alex Gino, and 
wanted it removed from the library. The book was formerly published by 
the title “George.”

Judith Cremer, the library director, 
said the book was added to the library after it made the William Allen 
White Award 2017-2018 Master List for grades 3-5, and has only been 
checked out four times.

Cremer said parents have the option 
of filtering which books their children check out, and can speak to 
staff about limiting their children’s access to certain books. She 
stressed that she and her staff aren’t trying to fight the council and 
aren’t interested in divisive matters. She’s been at the library for 
almost 20 years, and just wants to serve the community.

“We just are doing what public 
libraries do,” Cremer said. “We don’t really judge information, we are a
 reflection of the world and things that are in the world. We have 
information that has been published and mediated and checked for facts. 
So it’s a safe place that people can go to get access to that 
information. It’s not like we are handing out or advocating it in any 
way. It’s just there.”

Cremer asked the parent to fill out 
the standard form for challenging material, but the form wasn’t returned
 until the end of August, after a city council meeting in which council 
members asked that LGBTQ books be removed from the library, along with 
any books that dealt with racial issues or sexual issues.

During the August meeting, St. Marys 
City Commissioner Matthew Childs asked that a “morals clause” be added 
to the library’s lease during an August city commission.

The clause would’ve stipulated that 
the library not “supply, distribute, loan, encourage, or coerce 
acceptance of or approval of explicit sexual or racially or socially 
divisive material, or events (such as ‘drag queen story hours’) that 
support the LGBTQ+ or critical theory ideology or practice.”

“The discussion on the language that 
was used in that lease, it was very broad. It didn’t really meet the 
rule of law and it was problematic in a lot of ways,” Cremer said.

Cremer said she discussed the clause 
stipulation with regional library consultants and spoke with lawyers. 
She thought the issue had been dropped after they talked things over 
with council members.

Instead, commissioners began 
discussing creating their own city library, one without “divisive 
material,” in a council meeting earlier this month.

The lease renewal will be discussed at Tuesday’s commission meeting, with a decision expected then.

Stockman has been reaching out to 
every group she can think of to rally people in support of the library, 
talking to other libraries around the state, as well as PFLAG and Loud 
Light — nonprofits that advocate for the LGBTQ community. She said many 
people in the community were scared to speak out in support of the 
library because of a large religious presence in St. Marys, so she was 
looking to external sources of support.

One petition, started by Gerry 
Marstall, has more than 1,000 signatures in support of the library. 
Marstall listed all the services the library provides, including free 
reading programs, free summer lunches, and free Wi-Fi.

“If the library were forced to close 
or relocate to another town it would be catastrophic to all citizens in 
the St. Marys area,” Marstall said in the petition description.

Catherine (Kitty) Pricilla Fixx was born on September 18, 1934 in New York City. 

She and her brother, James (Jimmy) Fixx, bestselling author of “The Complete Book of Running,” grew up in a loving home in Jackson Heights, NY. Her father, Calvin Fixx, was an editor at Time Magazine and their mother, Marlys Fuller Fixx, had been a ballerina. 

Kitty grew up surrounded by her parent’s friends, influential journalists, poets, artists, and creative thinkers, (dubbed the “interstitial intellectuals" by Robert Vanderlan in his 2010 book), who inspired her lifelong interest in painting, drawing and poetry. 

As a young girl, Kitty studied portraiture under the tutelage of the prolific artist, Boris Chaliapin. Chaliapin encouraged her to pursue her artistic talent, and at the young age of 11, Kitty rode the train into NYC weekly to study at The Art Students League of America. Her love of tennis was born at the Garden Country Day School in Queens where she and her brother, Jimmy, developed a friendly rivalry that lasted well into their adulthood.

Her father died when she was 13, and she and her mother moved to Oberlin, Ohio where Kitty pursued a degree in early education. After graduating from Oberlin College, she taught in Venezuela and Florida before marrying Walter Davis and moving with him to Verona, New Jersey, and then Santa Barbara, California. Her children, Martha and Tom, were added to the family in Santa Barbara before moving to Winchester, Massachusetts. After divorcing, Kitty remarried and moved back to Santa Barbara.

She was a creative person with a lifelong passion for painting, drawing, and writing. She loved tennis and running and was into healthy eating before it was in vogue. She served on the board of the Inherited High Cholesterol Foundation, for many years. She was an equally fervent activist, going door to door in the '70s to petition for school integration through the METCO program. She loved God and worshipped at the Episcopal church, where she was often a lay reader. She was an amazing mother who loved her children unconditionally and sacrificially. She lived many adventures and enjoyed deep friendships with kindred spirits. 

After the difficult loss of her 96-year-old mother with whom she shared a deep and abiding bond, some cognitive issues began which resulted in the diagnosis of dementia in 2009. After living with her daughter in Los Angeles, she later moved to Kansas to be closer to her son with whom she lived surrounded by her son, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren. 

passed away peacefully in Salina, Kansas on Sunday, November 13, 2022.

She is survived by her children: Martha Davis of Los Angeles and Tom Davis of Salina, KS; her daughter-in-law Kat, grandchildren Kara, Kate, Summer, and Zachariah, as well as her niece Betsy and nephews Paul, John and Stephen. 

She was preceded in death by her father Calvin Fixx, her mother Marlys Fuller Fixx and her brother James Fixx; also by her husband Walter Davis and her second husband James Bower.

Funeral services will be held privately at a later date.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sam Bankman-Fried received numerous plaudits as he rapidly achieved superstar status as the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cryptocurrency-technology-business-e6ea8dca1140ac41ac6bbbba0af5887b">head of cryptocurrency exchange FTX</a>: the savior of crypto, the newest force in Democratic politics and potentially the world’s first trillionaire.

Now the comments about the 30-year-old Bankman-Fried aren’t so kind after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ftx-crypto-bankruptcy-filing-ed0f06c5db468e285f58af2d8766b51a">FTX filed for bankruptcy protection</a>&nbsp;Friday, leaving his investors and customers feeling duped and many others in the crypto world&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cryptocurrency-technology-business-philanthropy-9617e597560e5d5ee3b322a2c09c2520">fearing the repercussions.</a>&nbsp;Bankman-Fried himself could face civil or criminal charges.

“Sam what have you done?,” tweeted Sean Ryan Evans, host of the cryptocurrency podcast Bankless, after the bankruptcy filing.

Under Bankman-Fried, FTX quickly grew to be the third-largest exchange by volume. The stunning collapse of this nascent empire has sent tsunami-like waves through the cryptocurrency industry, which has seen a fair share of volatility and turmoil this year, including a sharp decline in price for bitcoin and other digital assets. For some, the events are reminiscent of the domino-like failures of Wall Street firms during the 2008 financial crisis, particularly now that supposedly healthy firms like FTX are failing.

One venture capital fund wrote down investments in FTX worth over $200 million. The cryptocurrency lender BlockFi paused client withdrawals Friday after FTX sought bankruptcy protection. The Singapore-based exchange Crypto.com saw withdrawals increase this weekend for internal reasons but some of the action could be attributed to raw nerves from FTX.

Bankman-Fried and his company&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cryptocurrency-technology-business-d866be4d1b3b9b88a6e774543a2b6a14">are under investigation</a>&nbsp;by the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The investigations likely center on the possibility that the firm may have used customers’ deposits to fund bets at Bankman-Fried’s hedge fund, Alameda Research, a violation of U.S. securities law.

“This is the direct result of a rogue actor breaking every single basic rule of fiscal responsibility,” said Patrick Hillman, chief strategy officer at Binance, FTX’s biggest competitor. Early last week Binance&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cryptocurrency-technology-business-eca5ca1c772333f2cde093c98cd26bed">appeared ready to step in</a>&nbsp;to bail out FTX, but backed away after a review of FTX’s books.

The ultimate impact of FTX’s bankruptcy is uncertain, but its failure will likely result in the destruction of billions of dollars of wealth and even more skepticism for cryptocurrencies at a time when the industry could use a vote of confidence.

“I care because it’s retail investors who suffer the most, and because too many people still wrongly associate bitcoin with the scammy ‘crypto’ space,” said Cory Klippsten, CEO of Swan Bitcoin, who for months raised concerns about FTX’s business model. Klippsten is publicly enthusiastic about bitcoin but has long had deep skepticism about other parts of the crypto universe.

Bankman-Fried founded FTX in 2019, and it grew rapidly — it was recently valued at $32 billion. The son of Stanford University professors, who was known to play the video game “League of Legends” during meetings, Bankman-Fried attracted investments from the highest echelons of Silicon Valley.

Sequoia Capital, which invested in Apple, Cisco, Google, Airbnb and YouTube, described their meeting with Bankman-Fried as likely “talking to the world’s first trillionaire.” Several of Sequoia’s partners became enthusiastic about Bankman-Fried following a Zoom meeting in 2021. After several more meetings, Sequoia decided to invest in the company.

“I don’t know how I know, I just do. SBF is a winner,” wrote Adam Fisher, a business journalist who wrote a profile of Bankman-Fried for the firm, referring to Bankman-Fried by his popular online moniker. The article, published in late September, was removed from Sequoia’s website.

Sequoia has written down its $213 million in investments to zero. A pension fund in Ontario, Canada wrote down its investment to zero as well.

In a terse statement, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Fund said, “Naturally, not all of the investments in this early-stage asset class perform to expectations.”

But up until last week, Bankman-Fried was seen as a white knight for the industry. Whenever the crypto industry had one of its crises, Bankman-Fried was the person likely to fly in with a rescue plan. When online trading platform Robinhood was in financial straits earlier this year — collateral damage from the decline in stock and crypto prices — Bankman-Fried jumped in to buy a stake in the company as a sign of support.

When Bankman-Fried bought up the assets of bankrupt crypto firm Voyager Digital for $1.4 billion this summer, it brought a sense of relief to Voyager account holders, whose assets has been frozen since its own failure. That rescue is now in question.

As king of crypto, his influence was starting to pour into political and popular culture. FTX bought prominent sports sponsorships&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-business-auto-racing-formula-one-e328e64d7931d2b8e9b8715e2c2ec616">with Formula Racing</a>&nbsp;and bought the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/miami-heat-nba-sports-business-f9667d11f7f4063c8eebb96ee1fbaf40">naming rights to an arena</a>&nbsp;in Miami. He pledged to donate $1 billion toward Democrats this election cycle — his actual donations were in the tens of millions — and prominent politicians like Bill Clinton were invited to speak at FTX conferences. Football star Tom Brady invested in FTX.

Bankman-Fried had been the subject of some criticism before FTX collapsed. While he largely operated FTX out of U.S. jurisdiction from his headquarters in The Bahamas, Bankman-Fried was increasingly vocal about the need for more regulation of the cryptocurrency industry. Many supporters of crypto oppose government oversight. Now, FTX’s collapse may have helped make the case for stricter regulation.

One of those critics was Binance founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao. The feud between the two billionaires spilled out onto Twitter, where Zhao and Bankman-Fried collectively commanded millions of followers. Zhao helped kickstart the withdrawals that doomed FTX when he said Binance would sell its holdings in FTX’s crypto token FTT.

“What a s(asterisk)(asterisk)t show ... and it’s going to be crypto’s fault (instead of one guys’s fault),” Zhao wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

That was the title of a business book that was especially popular a few years ago, as a parable of how to deal with change. Today we’ll learn about a remarkable change that is coming to southwest Kansas, and it is literally about cheese. A new state-of-the-art cheese and whey protein processing plant is being constructed in Dodge City.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joann Knight is executive director of the&nbsp;Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation with headquarters in Dodge City. She’s a native of the region and a graduate of Dodge City Community College and the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute.&nbsp;

“Back in 1992, we started talking about recruiting dairies from California where they were being crowded out by population expansion,” Knight said.&nbsp;

Recruiting dairies became a successful strategy for the western Kansas&nbsp;Rural&nbsp;Economic Development Alliance in following decades. As milk production grew in western Kansas, leaders wanted to add value and create more jobs.&nbsp;

In 2021, Hilmar Cheese Company of Hilmar, Calif. announced that the company would build a state-of-the-art milk processing facility in Dodge City.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We’re excited,” Knight said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“This will be a $630 million project and create 260 jobs. The average salary is projected to be $63,000.”&nbsp;

The average salary is projected to be $63,000.”&nbsp;The plant will operate 365 days a year and have the capacity to handle 260 tanker trucks of milk per day, the equivalent of the production of 110,000 cows. “They’ll be bringing in milk from across the region,” Knight said.&nbsp;Hilmar Cheese Company was founded in 1984 by 12 dairy farm families in central California. In 2007, the company opened a production facility in Dalhart, Texas. The company is now one of the world’s largest producers of high quality, American-style cheese and whey products.&nbsp;“Hilmar is an incredibly environmentally sensitive company,” Knight said. One of the factors that attracted Hilmar to Dodge City is the city’s innovative wastewater treatment system, which has won numerous awards.&nbsp;“Milk is mostly water,” Knight said. “Once the cheese solids and whey are removed, that water will be recycled and reused. It can be re-irrigated and used in the biogas production system. They’ll actually be injecting water back into the aquifer.”&nbsp;David Ahlem is president and CEO of Hilmar Cheese Company. “Dodge City gives us many opportunities, including a local and skilled labor force, a supportive and expanding agricultural region, and an excellent transportation network that allows us to easily reach our expanding markets,” he said at the time of the announcement in 2021.&nbsp;The company specializes in the production of cheddar and American-style cheeses used by private label and national brand companies worldwide. It currently produces such cheeses as cheddar, monterey jack, pepper jack, colby, colby jack and mozzarella.&nbsp;Whey is processed into whey protein products that are used as ingredients in many foods including nutritional beverages and bars; and lactose, which is marketed internationally as an ingredient in confections and infant formula. Hilmar exports products to 50 countries.&nbsp;Increased demand for milk will benefit area dairies such as High Plains Ponderosa Dairy near the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;southwest Kansas community of Plains, population 1,037 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;“Dairy production is so advanced these days,” Knight said. “They’re using robotic milkers and computer operators. They monitor 600 data points on each cow and can test the milk on the spot with their state of the art system.”&nbsp;“The economic impact will be compounded substantially by the additional dairies, transportation and services that will be required.
