An economic jolt could be felt in a matter of days. The government is expected Friday to produce its monthly jobs report, which may or may not be delivered.

Across the government, stoppages were getting underway. Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, headed by Russ Vought, directed agencies to execute plans not just for furloughs, which are typical during a federal funding lapse, but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-congress-government-shutdown-99d4cafe53209f6dc6ae5562c2ac79d2">mass firings</a>&nbsp;of federal workers. It’s part of the Trump administration’s mission, including its Department of Government Efficiency, to shrink the government.

The Medicare and Medicaid health care programs are expected to continue, though staffing shortages could mean delays for some services. The Pentagon would still function. And most employees will stay on the job at the Department of Homeland Security.

But Trump has warned that the administration could focus on programs that are important to Democrats, “cutting vast numbers of people out, cutting things that they like, cutting programs that they like.”

As agencies sort out which workers are essential, or not, Smithsonian museums are expected to stay open at least until Monday. A group of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shutdown-national-parks-burgum-superintendents-trash-b5109ba06f1cb3baef9370f585650136">former national park superintendents</a>&nbsp;urged the administration to close the parks to visitors, arguing that poorly staffed parks in a shutdown are a danger to the public and put park resources at risk.

Ahead of Wednesday’s start of the fiscal year, House Republicans had approved a temporary funding bill, over opposition from Democrats, to keep government running into mid-November while broader negotiations continue.

But that bill has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/house-trump-funding-bill-republicans-shutdown-1fea0f79c85ec69b91d9789fbda00834">failed repeatedly</a>&nbsp;in the Senate, including Wednesday, on a 55-45 vote. It needs 60 votes to advance, which requires cooperation between the two parties in a chamber where the GOP has a 53-47 majority. A Democratic bill also failed.

Divisions within the Democrats are apparent, as three senators again crossed over to join Republicans, signaling that Democratic leverage may be eroding. One Republican opposed the GOP plan.

Beginning this weekend, phones will be ringing across Salina USD 305 as a comprehensive survey of patrons’ opinion will begin.

School district officials say the survey will provide insight into what residents think about the district’s strengths, challenges and other important issues.

“This survey will give us an outstanding opportunity to hear from a cross-section of our patrons their opinions about our performance, and what they think about a variety of issues,” says Heath Hogan, superintendent. “We’ll hear from all geographic parts of the district, people of all different ages, and everyone from newcomers to long-term residents.”

The phone survey was designed by ExcellenceK12, a Kansas City-based market research firm that has worked with school districts across the Midwest.

The calling will be done by Market Research Associates, a Kansas City firm, which uses only professional researchers. Participants will be selected totally at random, and all responses will be kept completely confidential.

In general, calls will be placed between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm on weekdays, and noon to 6:00 pm on Saturdays.

The caller ID may show “Market Research Associates,” or it may simply show an 816 or 913 area code, because the company uses calling facilities in both Missouri and Kansas.

For those who are not contacted at random on the phone, an online version of the survey will be available on the <a href="https://www.usd305.com/">district’s website</a>. The online surveys will be open from October 3 through 12:00 am on October 17.&nbsp;

The survey process will take about two weeks to complete, and the district is asking patrons to listen for their phones to ring.

“We are very fortunate to live and serve in a community that values our schools,” Hogan says. “If you get called for the survey, please answer and give your honest feedback.”

• It was a solid all-around performance as the offense rushed for 266 yards – including 166 yards from Dylan Edwards – Avery Johnson threw for two scores, and the defense forced three UCF turnovers en route to the win.

• Four of K-State’s five games this season have been decided by one possession. In three of the four games, the Wildcats trailed late in the fourth quarter and had the ball with a chance to either tie or take the lead.

Need a musical experience that’s out of this world?

How about a concert combining a multimedia exploration of the planets of the solar system, an evocative trip to the farthest reaches of space with the Voyager spacecraft, and a trio of epic themes from “Star Wars”?

The countdown is commencing to the opening concert of the Salina Symphony’s 70th anniversary season, “Beyond the Planets.” 

The concert will feature three diverse and (inter) stellar performances that Salina Symphony music director and conductor Yaniv Segal aptly describes as “a blast!”

The October 5 concert will begin with a performance of Gustav Holst’s majestic “The Planets” suite, featuring a specially commissioned visual spacescape designed and created by world-renowned projection designer Camilla Tassi that will include Salina-based images from the Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival.

This epic piece will be followed by contemporary composer Daniel Slatkin’s evocative “Voyager 130,” which will transport listeners to the farthest reaches of our galaxy and beyond.

The concert will conclude with a trio of thrilling themes from film composer John Williams’ classic scores for “Star Wars,” which includes the “Imperial March,” “Duel of the Fates” and the iconic main theme.

Vocal accompaniment will be provided by the Kansas Wesleyan University Philharmonic Choir and select ensembles from Salina Central High School, Salina South High School, and Southeast of Saline High School.

“Enhanced by striking visual elements, this performance invites audiences to explore the intersection of classical music, outer space and cinematic storytelling on a truly cosmic scale,” Segal said.

“Beyond the Planets” lifts off at 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 5 at the Stiefel Theatre&nbsp;(151 S. Santa Fe).

The concert is sponsored by Vortex Companies and funded in part by the Horizons Grant Program of the Salina Arts and Humanities Foundation. Funding is provided by Horizons, a private donor group.

Holst’s “The Planets” was the composer’s attempt to understand the astrological significance of the planets of our solar system, portraying the planets as individual “characters.”

For example, Jupiter brings a ceremonial kind of rejoicing associated with religious or national festivities. Saturn presents a vision of fulfillment. Mars expresses the emotional state of being at war.

“The piece could almost be called ‘The Gods,’” Segal said. “Holst was influenced by the Roman names of Gods and the descriptions of these Gods. The movements are not in the order of how the planets appear in the solar system but arranged by theme.”

Segal said, “The Planets” is “a really big piece that takes a capable orchestra.”

Holtz’s epic composition will be enhanced by the ethereal projection design of Tassi, a New York City-based artist, performer and lecturer who previously has created more than 100 visual programs to accompany operas, concert and theater pieces throughout the world.

As Tassi, a native of Florence, Italy, explained, “After moving to the U.S., I studied computer science and music. It’s at the intersection of technology and live performance that I fell in love with projection design and storytelling (plays, operas, musicals, dance and everything in between).”

Segal has experienced Tassi’s projection creations in previous productions and said the scope and scale of her work is stunning.

“She’ll design the majority on computer, designing it for the space and for that occasion,” he said. “I’m grateful to the Stiefel Theatre for giving her the time to design onsite for our performance of ‘The Planets.’”

Primarily a film and television composer and conductor, Daniel Slatkin periodically writes pieces for the concert hall, which includes his 2022 piece “Voyager 130.”

“It stretches my imagination and leads me in directions I may never explore in a visual medium,” Slatkin wrote in his program notes.

Slatkin said he was inspired to write “Voyager 130” by Beethoven’s string quartet No. 13. Upon further investigation of Beethoven’s work, Slatkin discovered that a recording of its

fifth movement, also known as the Cavatina, was included on the “Golden Record,” a disc featuring the “sounds of earth” that were placed aboard both Voyager spacecrafts.

“The spark hit me immediately, and I decided to write a piece that tells the story of Voyager’s journey through space, with the Cavatina providing thematic material,” Slatkin wrote.

Segal said Slatkin’s piece tells the story of the Voyager’s lift-off and journey through the farthest reaches of space in hopes of searching for and finding other life forms in the galaxy.

“This is quite a delightful and beautiful piece,” Segal said. “Some film composers find it difficult to navigate the orchestral world, but (Slatkin) doesn’t need film to tell a compelling story through music.”

The Salina Symphony’s 70th anniversary season, “Infinite Horizons,” will also feature the following mainstage programs:

- Sunday,&nbsp;November 9 -- “Fireworks,” featuring trombone soloist Dan Hinman performing “Hojarasca for Trombone and Orchestra” by Carolina Calvache, and Ravel’s epic “Bolero.”

- Saturday, December 13 - Sunday, December 14 -- “Christmas Festival,” a holiday tradition featuring guest conductor and vocalist Andrew Lipke and performances by the Iron Street Dance Company, Tamara Howe’s School of Dance, Salina Chorale, Kansas Wesleyan University Chorale and Salina Symphony Youth Choir.

- Sunday, January 25, 2026 -- “American Songs,” celebrating 250 years of the American spirit with vocalist Samantha Rose Williams.

- Sunday, March 8, 2026 -- “An Afternoon of Rodgers &amp; Hammerstein,” a celebration of classic songs from musicals such as “Oklahoma,” “The King and I,” “South Pacific,” “Carousel” and “The Sound of Music,” featuring soprano Janie Brokenicky, baritone Andrew Horton and the KWU Chorale and high school select ensembles.

- Sunday, May 3, 2026 -- “Beethoven 9” the season’s grand finale will feature a complete performance of Beethoven’s awe-inspiring Ninth Symphony, featuring four professional soloists, the KWU Philharmonic Choir and Salina Chorale.

Salina Symphony hypes up opening of 70th anniversary season "Beyond the Planets": Tickets available now

ABILENE - Joni Cook, a dedicated volunteer with Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County, was honored with the Home Care and Hospice Hero Award by the Kansas Home Care and Hospice Association during its annual conference on Wednesday, September 17. 

This award recognizes individuals who are not employed in the field, but who make a profound impact on home care and hospice through their selfless dedication and support.

Since joining the hospice program in spring 2021, Cook has donated over 730 hours of her time – consistently going above and beyond in her role. She was nominated by the staff of Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County, for her unwavering commitment, compassion and extraordinary service.

Whether sitting with patients in their final hours, offering a calming presence to grieving families, or simply holding a hand in silence, Cook provides comfort in ways words often cannot. Her natural ability to connect with patients – with dignity, empathy and grace – has brought peace to many during life’s most vulnerable moments.

One story that captures the essence of Cook’s compassion involves a blind patient who had been moved between multiple long-term care facilities and suffered from severe anxiety. When Cook first began visiting, the patient was new to her current home and feeling unsettled. To help ease her anxiety, Cook began describing everything around them – painting vivid scenes of the environment. As they sat together and listened to the birds, Cook shared the beauty just outside the window. These visits soon became a source of joy and comfort for the patient, transforming her experience into something peaceful and meaningful.

In addition to her work with patients, Cook is a tireless advocate for hospice awareness in the community. She mentors new volunteers, supports bereavement and staff appreciation events and

serves on the Hospice Advisory Board as secretary. Her positivity uplifts the entire team, and her quiet leadership continues to inspire others.
