DOUGLAS COUNTY — Authorities are investigating after a&nbsp;46-year-old Lawrence man tried to repeatedly stab a 38-year-old man.

Just before midnight Tuesday, police were sent to a residence in the 700 block of North 3rd Street for a report of two men allegedly fighting in the street, according to a media release.

When officers arrived on-scene, no one was actively fighting, but they soon learned the suspect had come to the residence intending to stab the victim. 

Witnesses reported the suspect had brandished a knife and made multiple unsuccessful attempts to stab the victim. The suspect and victim were known to each other. The suspect was booked into the Douglas County Correctional Facility on requested charges of attempted first-degree murder. Police will present the case will to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for charging consideration. No injuries were reported in the incident. Police did not release the name of the suspect.

Saline County Jail Activity, Sept. 28

LABETTE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a field on Sunday have made an arrest.

Just after 2:30p.m. Sunday, a man placed a 911 call after discovering the body later identified as 28-year-old Kylie Caldwell of Parsons in a field one half mile west of the intersection of 20000 Road and Ness Road in rural Labette County, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

On Monday the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Labette County Sheriff’s Office, and the Parsons Police Department arrested 53-year-old Derrick W. Curry, 53, of Parsons, on requested charges for interference with the judicial process; to conceal or destroy evidence of a crime and he was booked into jail.

&nbsp;On Tuesday, KBI agents and investigators executed search warrants at Curry’s apartment at 2626 Kimball Avenue&nbsp; in Parsons, and on his vehicle. 

On Wednesday morning an arrest warrant was issued for Curry for second-degree murder in connection to the death of Caldwell. It was served to him while he was in custody at the jail. Curry and Caldwell were acquaintances, according to the sheriff's office.

Suspect accused in death of woman after body found in Kan. field

Salina Central High School began celebrating its Homecoming Week on Monday, complete with daily themes, a Wednesday parade, and a Saturday evening dance to conclude the school spirit-filled week.

The spirit themes include "Barbie" on Monday, "Rhyme without Reason" on Tuesday, "Frat Out" on Wednesday, "U.S.A." on Thursday and "Mustang" on Friday.

Each day allows students to dress up within the theme, from all in pink for Barbie on Monday to wearing school-themed clothing on Friday.

School staff will allow students to dress as they want within the school dress code.

Salina Central will parade through downtown at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, beginning at The Temple at 336 S. Santa Fe Ave. After the parade, the school will host a pep rally at 7 p.m. at Salina Stadium.

The royalty candidates will parade with other students, local businesses and organizations to show school spirit and excite students for the pep rally.

On Friday, Sept. 29, during the Salina Central High School football game against Valley Center High School, staff will coronate the winners during halftime.

This year's queen candidates at Salina Central include seniors Lydia Dong, Tyler Vidricksen, Azbey Peckham Callan Hall and Kendyl Gary. 

Salina Central's king candidates include Kyler Brecheisen, Gunnar Gross, Dez Gibson, Jameer Moore and Levi Losey. 

Each student stays involved in the school, varying from choral groups to sports.

Tyler Vidricksen is the daughter of Deby and Casey Vidricksen and sister to Hayden. After high school, Tyler plans on attending Kansas State University and is currently undecided on her major. While in high school, she participated in basketball, volleyball, softball, book club, and yearbook. She also served as Relay for Life captain for four years. Her favorite high school memory was going to the state basketball tournament her sophomore year and getting second place.


Dez Gibson is the son of Danielle Cranston and Greg Gibson and brother to Greg Gibson. After high school, Dez plans on attending college but is unsure of where at this point. While in high school, he participated in football and basketball all four years and track for 3 years. His favorite memory from high school was the Back to School dance during his sophomore year and playing against Salina South.


Lydia Dong is the daughter of Jonathan Dong and Jami Evan and sister to Kaili and Keryn. After high school, Lydia is planning on attending a university to major in pre-law. While in high school, she was involved in Vets, Maroons, wrestling and Softball. She is also the senior class STUCO treasurer and Mustang Media Producer. Her favorite high school memory was winning against a boy at the Salina South dual her freshman year and beating South for the eighth year in a row.


Kyler Brecheisen is the son of Rae Brecheisen and brother to Kinleigh (ken-lee) and Karlyn. After high school, Kyler is planning on getting his associate's degree in applied science for welding. While in high school, he participated in baseball all four years and is currently on the Maroons. His favorite high school memory was the home football games in the student section and riding to school with his sister.


Kendyl Gary is the daughter of Trish and Brandon Gary and the sister of Mason. After high school, Kendyl plans on attending a university and majoring in psychology with hopes of becoming an occupational therapist. While in high school, she participated in basketball, volleyball, and track. She also was a part of the maroons and yearbook. Her favorite high school memory was winning their first volleyball tournament this year at Wichita-North.


Levi Losey is the son of Troy and Monica Losey and brother to Logan and Lakyn (lay-ken). After high school, Levi plans on attending Kansas State University and majoring in agronomy. While in high school, he participated in football, basketball, and track. His favorite high school memory is going to the gym with his brother.

&nbsp;Azbey Peckham is the daughter of John and Jennifer Peckham and sister to Danielle and Hannah. After high school, Azbey plans to attend
the University of Kansas and major in elementary education. While in high school, she was involved in basketball and swimming. She participated in Scholars Bowl, Link, NHS, and book club and currently serves as the managing editor of the Pylon and the Stuco senior class
 vice president. Her favorite memory from high school was breaking the school record in the 100 butterfly and seeing the board get changed.


Jameer Moore is the son of Tammy Fairchild and Xavier Moore and brother to Quincy, Jazlyn, and Starlet. After high school, Jameer plans on attending a university to major in either mechanical engineering or drafting. He also plans to continue his football career in college. While in high school, he participated in football, track and field, and basketball. His favorite high school memory was beating Salina South.


Callan Hall is the daughter of Michael and Lisa Hall and sister to Griffin and Braxton. After high school, Callan plans to continue her twirling career at a Division One college and pursue a career in the medical field. While in high school, she participated in volleyball, basketball, track, student council, Relay for Life and Link. She is also active in the Ark Church Community. Callan was also awarded the All-League Honors in volleyball and basketball, the Hoby Leadership Award, and the I Dare You Leadership Award. She has also received 25 individual national titles and a world champion title with Shannon’s Star Twirling Club. Her favorite high school memory is the state basketball tournament her sophomore year and going 24-1 for the season.


Gunnar Gross is the son of Guy and Kathryn Gross and brother to Grayton and Kallia. After high school, Gunnar plans on playing football and wants to pursue a career in the medical field. In high school, he participated in football and basketball. Gunnar was awarded 1st team All-State non-senior, First Team all AVCTL in football 1x All-State and 2x all AVCTL in baseball. Gunnar is also active in the Ark church community. His favorite memory from high school is winning the
 regional playoff game in football last year and beating Salina South three years in a row.

Saline County Jail Activity, Sept 27

State legislature abandoned the Local Ad Valorem Tax Reduction Fund 20 years ago

TOPEKA — The Legislature’s perennial failure to invest in lowering local property taxes left Miami County with a budget dilemma this year.

The sheriff’s office, competing with higher wages for law enforcement in the neighboring Kansas City metro area, was about 20 deputies short of a full staff. Faced with the prospect of raising property taxes to pay for better salaries, Miami County Commissioner Rob Roberts said the question he had to ask was: “Are we going to have law enforcement in Miami County?”

By increasing the base pay by $2.50 for law enforcement, the county hired five people. But it meant increasing property taxes by roughly the same amount — $1.7 million — that the state was supposed to distribute to the county through decades old revenue-sharing agreements designed to lower local property taxes.

“Those are dispatchers. Those are men and women who sit in your jail and take care of inmates. Those are people who patrol our city or our county area,” Roberts said. “And what choice do counties have? The wage pressure that’s put on local jurisdictions is right now tremendous.

“Each of these functions that the county is required to put on, there is not one of them that we put on that has anything to do with social ills. People go, ‘Well, you’re providing too much social services.’ It’s a county appraiser. That’s not social services. It’s a county sheriff’s department. When you call 911, what do you expect?”

Roberts joined Bruce Chladny, executive director of the Kansas Association of Counties, on the Kansas Reflector podcast to talk about the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansascounties.org/legislative/kansas-counties-toolkit/local-ad-valorem-tax-reduction-fund-lavtr-toolkit">benefits of the Local Ad Valorem Tax Reduction Fund</a>, which has been dormant for 20 years.

But lawmakers abandoned the fund during a round of school finance litigation, then left it empty during the economic downturn of 2008 and the financial calamity of Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration.

Now, with the state holding billions in surplus and lawmakers unable to agree on who should benefit from reduced taxes, counties hope to pressure lawmakers into reviving the fund.

Republican leaders in the House and Senate favor passage of a flat tax rate for income, a priority of Americans for Prosperity and the Kansas Chamber. The idea is to offer a trivial income tax cut, as little as $5 per month, to those earning less than $75,000 per year while dramatically lowering taxes for high-wage earners. Senate President Ty Masterson, an Andover Republican, describes it as “a benefit for everybody.”

House Democrats have tried to make the ad valorem fund part of tax reform negotiations.

Rep. Jason Probst, a Hutchinson Democrat, said Republican leaders in the Legislature lack the “desire to solve today’s problems.”

“They are stuck in a 1950s TV sitcom storyline — keep giving money to the wealthiest people in the state, and the rest of us will grow rich too,” Probst said. “Kansans have been waiting their entire lives for this Republican myth to come true — but it’s a lie, and you’re still not rich.”

During a statewide tour last week to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/09/21/top-kansas-republicans-push-flat-tax-proposal-pan-medicaid-expansion/">promote Americans for Prosperity’s interests</a>, House Speaker Dan Hawkins, a Wichita Republican, said the fund had “failed miserably.” Counties used it as a “slush fund,” he said.

Roberts said Hawkins’ comments were disappointing. Counties could use the ad valorem fund to lower property taxes that pay for essential services, he said.

In his 35 years of working in various areas of local government, Roberts said, he never heard someone say: “You got some money coming in, baby! It’s a slush fund!”

If local residents don’t like the way county officials spend money, they can vote them out.

“Not only that, but they’ll show up at your meetings and point their finger at you and tell you,” Roberts said. “They do not worry about the words they use. Every Wednesday at 1 o’clock is open mic night for the county.”

He wondered how Hawkins and other lawmakers could rebuild the trust that is needed for local and state leaders to “sit at the same table” and “solve our problems without throwing barbs.”

Residents are mad because taxes are too high, Roberts said, and they’re right.

“These men and women are your neighbors. Most of them don’t have a political ambition,” Roberts said. “They just want to know how to help get the road paved. They’re mad because the ambulance didn’t show up quick enough. Or they want to make sure that we have dog catchers because the dogs have been chewing up my garden.”

Chladny said his goal was to educate the public and newer lawmakers about the the fund. If fully funded, the state would have distributed $128 million to local counties through the program this year.

He said he wants people to realize they are paying the same tax twice.

“How come I have to go to the store and pay sales tax, but then also, I get my property tax bill that Rob sends to me and I have to pay that money again?” Chladny said.

When people talk about property tax relief, “this is it,” Chladny said.

“It’s already on the books, and it’s already been proven to work and be effective,” he said.

Faced with the prospect of raising property taxes to pay for better salaries, Miami County Commissioner Rob Roberts said the question he had to ask was: “Are we going to have law enforcement in Miami County?”By increasing the base pay by $2.50 for law enforcement, the county hired five people. But it meant increasing property taxes by roughly the same amount — $1.7 million — that the state was supposed to distribute to the county through decades old revenue-sharing agreements designed to lower local property taxes.“Those are dispatchers. Those are men and women who sit in your jail and take care of inmates. Those are people who patrol our city or our county area,” Roberts said. “And what choice do counties have? The wage pressure that’s put on local jurisdictions is right now tremendous.“Each of these functions that the county is required to put on, there is not one of them that we put on that has anything to do with social ills. People go, ‘Well, you’re providing too much social services.’ It’s a county appraiser. That’s not social services. It’s a county sheriff’s department. Kan. counties eager for lawmakers to resurrect property tax relief fund

MCPHERSON COUNTY —An elementary school student was injured in an accident Tuesday morning in McPherson.

Just before 10a.m., police&nbsp; responded to Roosevelt Elementary School,&nbsp;800 S Walnut Street in McPherson, where&nbsp; a 7-year-old student was struck in the arm by an arrow on the playground, according to a media release.

McPherson Emergency Medical Services and Fire Rescue responded, provided medical assistance, and transported the child to McPherson Center for Health. 

The victim was later transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, in stable condition. Officers arrested a 31-year-old man, identified as&nbsp; Nehemiah Scott, according to online booking records, who shot a bow and arrow in the area, resulting in a stray arrow striking the student. 

Scott is being held on requested charges of Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Child Endangerment on a bond of $12,500.00.

It is unlawful in McPherson to operate an air rifle, bow and arrow, slingshot or BB gun except within the confines of a building or structure from which the projectiles cannot escape.

By D. SCOTT FRITCHEN MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State welcomed UCF to the Big 12 Conference, and DJ Giddens said hello to one of the Wildcats’ more memorable individual performances in recent years in a 44-31 win before a much-needed bye week.

Giddens had 30 carries for 207 yards and four touchdowns and added eight receptions for 86 yards for the Wildcats while scoring on runs of 1, 9, 18 and 3 yards. However, one of his biggest plays came when he didn’t even reach paydirt. With the score tied 24-24 late in the third quarter, Giddens caught a third-down swing pass from Will Howard and gained 16 yards for a first down.

Howard coasted around the left side and into the end zone on the next play with 1 minute, 28 seconds left in the third quarter.

“I have to shout out the offensive line and Will for their confidence in me,” Giddens said. “I tried to make one or two people miss. That’s really what it was.”

From there, the Wildcats, 3-1, steadily pulled away from the Knights, 3-1, who played in their first conference game as a Big 12 member in front of a crowd of 51,912 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. As the fourth quarter wore on, K-State head coach Chris Klieman became more animated on the sidelines, cheering on his players after key offensive and defensive plays.

The Wildcats’ victory comes off the heels of a heartbreaking three-point loss at Missouri on a last-play 61-yard field goal last Saturday.

“What a win by our guys and our team coming off a difficult loss last week,” Klieman said. “We talked here that we couldn’t let Missouri beat us twice, and our kids rose up. We played an excellent football team. UCF is really talented. We knew this was going to be the type of game it was — back and forth.”

Howard completed 27-0f-42 passes for 255 yards and tossed one interception, and he rushed for two scores after entering the week questionable to play. He proved capable and grew stronger toward the end — rushing for a 31-yard score for a 44-24 lead.

“I knew I was playing all week for sure,” Howard said. “Once the adrenaline got going, I was fine.”

“It was a huge win,” Howard continued. “Any game in this conference is tough, especially a team like that that’s new to the conference, which wanted to come in and make a stamp. That’s a tough team. It was a big win.”

Timmy McClain completed 14-of-24 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns and one interception. McClain’s favorite target, Kobe Hudson, had five catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Johnny Richardson had six carries for 76 yards.

“I was proud of our guys because whether it was throwing the ball vertical or handing it to (Richardson), they can score from anywhere, and we held them essentially to 24 points,” Klieman said. “We did some good things on defense. We’ve got to get better but we did some good things.”

K-State out-gained UCF 536 to 407 in total offense. The Wildcats were balanced with 281 rushing yards and 255 passing yards while running off 82 total plays.

“We got back to the ‘Beef’ identity tonight,” said All-American left guard Cooper Beebe. “We knew coming into this game we had to control the clock. We knew the type of offense they had. They’re a high-paced, explosive offense. We had to control the game.”

The Wildcats gave up scoring plays of 27, 69 and 46 yards but stiffened at critical times as the Knights were 5-of-12 on third down. The Knights had 10 penalties, including several delay-of-game penalties due to crowd noise.

“We’re 1-0 in league play going into an open week,” Klieman said. “Couldn’t be more thrilled. We’re by no means a finished product. We have to get a lot better as a football team. We’re still growing and learning as a team, but it was exciting to come back home in front of a great sellout crowd. Our crowd was phenomenal tonight. They were a big factor in a number of delay-of-game penalties they had in the fourth quarter.”

UCF came out of halftime and struck immediately as Hudson reeled in a 46-yard pass from McClain for a 24-21 lead. Then K-State answered as Chris Tennant tied it at 24-24 with a 30-yard field goal.

Things stayed that way until the Wildcats made their charge and Howard connected with Giddens before he kept the ball and rolled into the end zone.

It wasn’t until running back RJ Harvey scored a 1-yard run with 3 seconds left that the Knights added to their scoring total. By then, the K-State Marching Band had already played, “Happy Trails.”

And there was rightfully much happiness in Manhattan.

“It’s awesome to start this tough conference 1-0,” tight end Ben Sinnott said. “It’s very deep and very competitive. We had a bunch of ups and downs to battle. Any game you can come out with a victory and rally guys together and push through brings a team closer.”

Giddens finished with 293 scrimmage yards, third-most in school history and only behind Darren Sproles’ total of 323 scrimmage yards against Oklahoma in the 2003 Big 12 Championship Game and his 298 yards against Louisiana in 2004.

Giddens had 14 carries for 107 yards and three touchdowns and six catches for 66 yards in the first half alone. He got K-State on the scoreboard first when he busted a 36-yard run up the middle to set up his 1-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. It marked Giddens’ first touchdown of the season. It gave K-State a game-opening touchdown drive in four straight games for the first time since at least 1990.

UCF took the lead, 10-7, after it followed a 29-yard field goal with a 57-yard touchdown drive following a Howard interception. McClain sucked in the defensive front and completed a pass to Harvey in the flat and the running back raced down the sideline and into the end zone with 1:47 left in the first quarter to snatch the lead from the Wildcats.

But the Knights’ lead didn’t last long. Howard fired back on a 12-play, 84-yard charge in which he alternated between run and pass. He hit Giddens on a short pass that he turned into a 24-yard gain. Five plays later, Giddens cut outside and outraced defenders to the right pylon for a 14-10 advantage.

“I’m glad DJ got to show the world what we see in practice at all times,” Beebe said. “I love that kid to death.”

Kobe Savage forced a fumble and VJ Payne recovered the football at the UCF 38-yard line, and Giddens went to work. He carried four times and followed a 16-yard rush up the middle with an 18-yard touchdown for a 21-10 lead.

When K-State saw a drive stall, UCF quickly went to work. McClain handed off to Harvey who tossed the ball back to McClain on a flea-flicker, and Hudson got 15 yards behind the defensive secondary for a 69-yard catch-and-run to draw to within 21-17.

Jacob Parrish came up with the Wildcats’ defensive play of the first half when he got underneath a McClain pass for an interception at the UCF 39-yard line.

But the feisty Knights wouldn’t go away until the Wildcats were able to clamp down and keep them out of the end zone for most of the final two quarters.

“This shows us where we’re at,” UCF head coach Gus Malzahn said. “We’ve got to play really good. We have to play disciplined. We didn’t do the things that it takes to get a quality win against a really good opponent on their home field. We still have a really good football team.”

Coming off a close loss at Missouri, K-State appears to have a really good team as well.

“We strive on overcoming adversity and always talk about average teams get destroyed by adversity and good teams survive it and great teams get better because of it,” Klieman said. “That’s what we want to be, a great team. We have to continue to get better because of the adversity.”

SCOTT FRITCHEN MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State welcomed UCF to the Big 12 Conference, and DJ Giddens said hello to one of the Wildcats’ more memorable individual performances in recent years in a 44-31 win before a much-needed bye week.Giddens had 30 carries for 207 yards and four touchdowns and added eight receptions for 86 yards for the Wildcats while scoring on runs of 1, 9, 18 and 3 yards. However, one of his biggest plays came when he didn’t even reach paydirt. With the score tied 24-24 late in the third quarter, Giddens caught a third-down swing pass from Will Howard and gained 16 yards for a first down.Howard coasted around the left side and into the end zone on the next play with 1 minute, 28 seconds left in the third quarter.“I have to shout out the offensive line and Will for their confidence in me,” Giddens said. “I tried to make one or two people miss. That’s really what it was.”From there, the Wildcats, 3-1, steadily pulled away from the Knights, 3-1, who played in their first conference game as a Big 12 member in front of a crowd of 51,912 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. As the fourth quarter wore on, K-State head coach Chris Klieman became more animated on the sidelines, cheering on his players after key offensive and defensive plays.The Wildcats’ victory comes off the heels of a heartbreaking three-point loss at Missouri on a last-play 61-yard field goal last Saturday.“What a win by our guys and our team coming off a difficult loss last week,” Klieman said. “We talked here that we couldn’t let Missouri beat us twice, and our kids rose up. We played an excellent football team. UCF is really talented. We knew this was going to be the type of game it was — back and forth.”Howard completed 27-0f-42 passes for 255 yards and tossed one interception, and he rushed for two scores after entering the week questionable to play. He proved capable and grew stronger toward the end — rushing for a 31-yard score for a 44-24 lead.“I knew I was playing all week for sure,” Howard said. “Once the adrenaline got going, I was fine.”“It was a huge win,” Howard continued. “Any game in this conference is tough, especially a team like that that’s new to the conference, which wanted to come in and make a stamp. That’s a tough team. It was a big win.”Timmy McClain completed 14-of-24 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns and one interception. McClain’s favorite target, Kobe Hudson, had five catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Johnny Richardson had six carries for 76 yards.“I was proud of our guys because whether it was throwing the ball vertical or handing it to (Richardson), they can score from anywhere, and we held them essentially to 24 points,” Klieman said. “We did some good things on defense. We’ve got to get better but we did some good things.”K-State out-gained UCF 536 to 407 in total offense. The Wildcats were balanced with 281 rushing yards and 255 passing yards while running off 82 total plays.“We got back to the ‘Beef’ identity tonight,” said All-American left guard Cooper Beebe. “We knew coming into this game we had to control the clock. We knew the type of offense they had. They’re a high-paced, explosive offense. We had to control the game.”The Wildcats gave up scoring plays of 27, 69 and 46 yards but stiffened at critical times as the Knights were 5-of-12 on third down. The Knights had 10 penalties, including several delay-of-game penalties due to crowd noise.“We’re 1-0 in league play going into an open week,” Klieman said. “Couldn’t be more thrilled. We’re by no means a finished product. We have to get a lot better as a football team. We’re still growing and learning as a team, but it was exciting to come back home in front of a great sellout crowd. Our crowd was phenomenal tonight. They were a big factor in a number of delay-of-game penalties they had in the fourth quarter.”UCF came out of halftime and struck immediately as Hudson reeled in a 46-yard pass from McClain for a 24-21 lead. Then K-State answered as Chris Tennant tied it at 24-24 with a 30-yard field goal.Things stayed that way until the Wildcats made their charge and Howard connected with Giddens before he kept the ball and rolled into the end zone.It wasn’t until running back RJ Harvey scored a 1-yard run with 3 seconds left that the Knights added to their scoring total. By then, the K-State Marching Band had already played, “Happy Trails.”And there was rightfully much happiness in Manhattan.“It’s awesome to start this tough conference 1-0,” tight end Ben Sinnott said. “It’s very deep and very competitive. We had a bunch of ups and downs to battle. Any game you can come out with a victory and rally guys together and push through brings a team closer.”Giddens finished with 293 scrimmage yards, third-most in school history and only behind Darren Sproles’ total of 323 scrimmage yards against Oklahoma in the 2003 Big 12 Championship Game and his 298 yards against Louisiana in 2004.Giddens had 14 carries for 107 yards and three touchdowns and six catches for 66 yards in the first half alone. He got K-State on the scoreboard first when he busted a 36-yard run up the middle to set up his 1-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. It marked Giddens’ first touchdown of the season. It gave K-State a game-opening touchdown drive in four straight games for the first time since at least 1990.K-State’s momentum was short lived.UCF took the lead, 10-7, after it followed a 29-yard field goal with a 57-yard touchdown drive following a Howard interception. McClain sucked in the defensive front and completed a pass to Harvey in the flat and the running back raced down the sideline and into the end zone with 1:47 left in the first quarter to snatch the lead from the Wildcats.But the Knights’ lead didn’t last long. Howard fired back on a 12-play, 84-yard charge in which he alternated between run and pass. He hit Giddens on a short pass that he turned into a 24-yard gain. Five plays later, Giddens cut outside and outraced defenders to the right pylon for a 14-10 advantage.Giddens was just getting started.“I’m glad DJ got to show the world what we see in practice at all times,” Beebe said. “I love that kid to death.”Kobe Savage forced a fumble and VJ Payne recovered the football at the UCF 38-yard line, and Giddens went to work. He carried four times and followed a 16-yard rush up the middle with an 18-yard touchdown for a 21-10 lead.When K-State saw a drive stall, UCF quickly went to work. McClain handed off to Harvey who tossed the ball back to McClain on a flea-flicker, and Hudson got 15 yards behind the defensive secondary for a 69-yard catch-and-run to draw to within 21-17.Jacob Parrish came up with the Wildcats’ defensive play of the first half when he got underneath a McClain pass for an interception at the UCF 39-yard line.But the feisty Knights wouldn’t go away until the Wildcats were able to clamp down and keep them out of the end zone for most of the final two quarters.“This shows us where we’re at,” UCF head coach Gus Malzahn said. “We’ve got to play really good. We have to play disciplined. We didn’t do the things that it takes to get a quality win against a really good opponent on their home field. We still have a really good football team.”Coming off a close loss at Missouri, K-State appears to have a really good team as well.“We strive on overcoming adversity and always talk about average teams get destroyed by adversity and good teams survive it and great teams get better because of it,” Klieman said. “That’s what we want to be, a great team. We have to continue to get better because of the adversity.”

Saline County Jail Booking Activity, Sept. 22

LAS VEGAS (AP) — MGM Resorts brought to an end a 10-day computer shutdown prompted by efforts to shield from a cyberattack data including hotel reservations and credit card processing, the casino giant said Wednesday, as analysts and academics measured the effects of the event.

“We are pleased that all of our hotels and casinos are operating normally,” the Las Vegas-based company posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. It&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mgm-resorts-casino-vegas-cybersecurity-outage-06de044bdf1880af2a8bce1a38c986ee">reported last week</a>&nbsp;that the attack was detected Sept. 10.

Rival casino owner Caesars Entertainment also disclosed last week&nbsp;<a href="https://investor.caesars.com/static-files/0bc13ee5-34a9-402e-8e7a-824b9dba4e57">to federal regulators</a>&nbsp;that it was hit by a cyberattack Sept. 7. It said that its casino and online operations were not disrupted but it could not guarantee that personal information about tens of millions of customers, including driver’s licenses and Social Security numbers of loyalty rewards members, had not been compromised.

Caesars, based in Reno, is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vegas-casinos-mgm-resorts-caesars-cyberattack-shutdown-3f7f80d0d200e9f26a2efa88bc5a6862">widely reported to have paid</a>&nbsp;$15 million of a $30 million ransom sought by a group called Scattered Spider for a promise to secure the data.

Details about the extent of the MGM breach were not immediately disclosed, including the kind of information that may have been compromised and how much it cost the company.

Gregory Moody, professor and director of the cybersecurity program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, pointed to quoted estimates that the computer shutdown cost the company up to $8 million per day, which could put the cumulative effect at $80 million. But Moody also noted that MGM Resorts reports annual revenues above $14 billion, which would mean it averages at least $270 million in revenues per week.

The company reported Wednesday that systems handling resort services, dining, entertainment, pools and spas were operational and its website and app were taking dining and spa reservations while the company worked to restore hotel booking and loyalty reward functions.

"MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas and throughout the country are back to normal operations," spokesman Brian Ahern told The Associated Press. MGM also has properties in Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York and Ohio.

FBI spokeswoman Sandra Breault in Las Vegas declined to comment and referred to a previous statement by the agency saying an investigation was ongoing.

Experts said the attacks exposed critical cybersecurity weaknesses at MGM and Caesars and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vegas-casinos-mgm-caesars-cyberattack-59644d2cb0f2a765770d30f268b81a11">shattered an image of casino invulnerability</a>.

“At this point, all casinos should be moving to the highest defensive posture possible and taking active measures to verify the integrity of their systems and environment, and reviewing — if not activating — their incident response processes,” said Christopher Budd, a director of threat research at cybersecurity firm Sophos X-Ops. “There’s been attacks against multiple casinos, and it’s possible we’ll see more.”

Caesars Entertainment is the largest casino owner in the world, with more than 65 million rewards members and properties in 18 states and Canada under the Caesars, Harrah’s, Horseshoe and Eldorado brands. It also has mobile and online operations and sports betting.

MGM Resorts is the largest private employer in Nevada, operating tens of thousands of hotel rooms in Las Vegas at its flagship MGM Grand and properties including Bellagio, Aria, New York-New York and Mandalay Bay. It also operates resorts in China and Macau. It employees 75,000 people in the U.S. and abroad.

Caesars stock traded Wednesday at $50.17 per share, up 36 cents for the day. MGM shares were at $38.77, down 43 cents. Both companies are expected to disclose effects of the attacks in quarterly reports next month to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The attack on MGM also has been attributed to Scattered Spider, a group of English-speakers also sometimes known as Øktapus operating under a Russia-based operation called ALPHV or BlackCat.

“But there are a lot of conflicting reports,” said David Richardson, an executive at cybersecurity firm Lookout. “You have Scattered Spider claiming that they’ve done both in various forums, and ALPHV, saying that Scattered Spider wasn’t involved with the other. But there’s a lot of technical evidence that shows that there’s a relationship between the two."

“Caesars Entertainment’s decision to pay the ransom highlighted a lack of confidence and investment in their cyber defenses,” Plaggemier said.

Moody, at UNLV, said via email that the attacks showed that even for well-prepared or technically advanced companies, “it is not a matter of if you get attacked, but when you get attacked.”
