&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two suspect on drug allegations. Just after 3p.m. June 21, a sheriff's deputy&nbsp;conducted a traffic stop on a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck that had been northbound on U.S. Highway 75, near 266th Road for alleged traffic violations. according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

During the course of the stop the driver was identified as Kevin Lee Davenport, 41 and passenger identified as Jessica Rose Castle, 33, both of Topeka. During the course of the traffic stop probable cause was established to search the vehicle for illegal drugs or narcotics. The vehicle occupants were arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail.

Davenport was arrested and booked on requested charges of an outstanding Pottawatomie County warrant for burglary, theft, and criminal damage to property. Additionally, Davenport was arrested for alleged violate Offender Registry Act; 2nd Conviction, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.&nbsp;Davenport has been registered as a violent offender since 2007 for a  felony drug conviction in Shawnee County, according to the KBi Offender Registry

Castle was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail onrequested charges of&nbsp; possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with law enforcement and trafficking contraband into a correctional facility.

Kansas violent offender captured after traffic stop

RENO COUNTY—An inmate died Tuesday at the Reno County Correctional Facility.

Just after 1:30 a.m., the inmate identified as 41-year-old&nbsp; Joshua Caleb Ledbetter of Hutchinson, was found unresponsive in his cell, according to a statement from the Reno County Sheriff's office.

Jail personnel and emergency responders were immediately notified. Despite efforts by on-site staff he was pronounced deceased.

Ledbetter was booked into the jail on April 30 on requested charges of electronic indecent solicitation of a Child, according to the sheriff's office.

There is no indication of foul play. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will provide an independent investigation. The Reno County Coroner determine the cause of death.

Kan. inmate accused of child sex crimes found dead in his cell

Mabel Lillian Masten, 103, peacefully passed away on June 21, 2025. She was born on December 2, 1921, on the family homestead in Dillon, Kansas to Christian and Ernestine (Pjesky) Pschigoda. She grew into adulthood during the Great Depression and was very proud to be the first in her family to graduate from Hope High School in 1941. On November 28, 1942 in Fort Riley, Kansas, with the country at war, she was united in marriage to Gaius P. Masten. Mabel supported homefront war efforts by working in a large bakery in Michigan during his Philippines Tour.

Following the war, Mabel learned to professionally decorate cakes at the Wilton School in Omaha, Nebraska. Together, Gauis and Mabel owned and operated Saundra’s Bakery from 1949-1977 and made their home in Herington, Kansas. She took great pride in all the cakes she decorated and is remembered by many as the person who decorated a cake for their special life events. Mabel considered two cakes especially challenging - A Rock Island Anniversary Cake made to serve 1400 people and a cake made to replicate the First National Bank Building in Herington. Mabel made and decorated her last wedding cake for the marriage of her granddaughter in 2004, at the age of 83.

When the bakery closed, Mabel remained active as a homemaker and loved taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Herington for many years, and served as Sunday School teacher and Youth Leader. Her home always had an open door and she thoroughly enjoyed visits from family and friends. Mabel loved gifts of chocolate, word search books, puzzles, and always enjoyed being treated to Pizza Hut.

Mabel believed in the power of prayer and God’s promise in Hebrews 13:5: “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee” and loved the song “Because He Lives, I Can Face Tomorrow”. Mabel had a kind and compassionate spirit and blessed others with her positive outlook on life. At the age of 99, Mabel moved to Marion Assisted Living and often told those caring for her “I love you so much, you are so kind, you are so beautiful, you are so special.” She rarely focused on negativity and throughout the storms of life taught us to cling tightly to our faith.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings: Carl, Reynold, Walter, Harold, Edwin, Emma, Martha, Esther, and Anna. She is survived by daughters, Saundra (Ed) Hartl of Calhan, CO and Terry (Larry) Ryff of Hope, KS; her grandchildren, Brandon Ryff of Kansas City, KS, and Kimberly (Kelvin) Kroupa of Marion, KS; her great-grandchildren Karsen Kroupa and Kole Kroupa, and many nieces and nephews. 

Visitation will be held on Friday June 27, 2025 from 9-10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Herington. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the church following visitation. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, Herington, Kansas.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose toward their all-time high on Tuesday after oil prices eased further on hopes that Israel’s war with Iran will not damage the global flow of crude.

The S&amp;P 500 climbed 1.1%, following up on big gains for stocks across Europe and Asia, after President Donald Trump said late Monday that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-trump-bomber-news-06-23-2025-9e78510c88ccc5e262341f41550609c5">Israel and Iran had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire.”</a>&nbsp;The main measure of Wall Street’s health is back within 0.8% of its record set in February after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-tariffs-china-trump-b686ef0259c2f4894f9fcd1f3649a956">falling roughly 20% below</a>&nbsp;during the spring.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 507 points, or 1.2%, and the Nasdaq composite rallied 1.4%.

The strongest action was again in the oil market, where a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude fell 6% to settle at $64.37. Brent crude, the international standard, had a similar drop.

The fear throughout the Israel-Iran conflict has been that it could squeeze the world’s supply of oil, which would pump up prices for gasoline and hurt the global economy. Iran is a major producer of crude, and it could also try to block the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/strait-hormuz-iran-israel-war-oil-15ce74cc8df0f19a6b7f6357773b07c8">Strait of Hormuz</a>&nbsp;off its coast, through which 20% of the world’s daily oil needs passes on ships.

Oil prices began falling sharply on Monday after Iran launched what appeared to be a limited retaliatory strike to the United States’ entry into the war, one that did not target the production or movement of oil. They kept falling even after attacks continued past a deadline to stop hostilities early Tuesday. Trump later said that the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-israel-iran-war-ceasefire-a7438b98a26c2141558a71263df92559">ceasefire was “in effect.”</a>

Oil prices have dropped so much in the last two days that they’re below where they were before the fighting began nearly two weeks ago.

With the global oil market well supplied and the OPEC+ alliance of producing countries steadily increasing production, oil prices could be headed even lower as long as the ceasefire holds and a lasting peace solution can be found, said Carsten Fritsch, commodities analyst at Commerzbank.

Falling oil prices should take some pressure off inflation, and that in turn could give the Federal Reserve leeway to resume cutting interest rates.

Wall Street loves lower rates because they boost the economy by making it cheaper for U.S. households and businesses to borrow money to buy a car or build a factory. But they could also give inflation more fuel. That threat is why the Fed has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-interest-rates-fed-fa91e7b38ca858ff54f57bc642111188">hesitant to cut rates</a>&nbsp;this year after lowering them through the end of last year.

The Fed has said repeatedly that it wants to wait and see how much&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/consumer-prices-inflation-trump-trade-6ea513a44876c2f4dc948a25c15b0eb0">Trump’s tariffs</a>&nbsp;will hurt the economy and raise inflation before committing to its next move. So far, the economy seems to be holding up OK, though a report on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/consumer-confidence-conference-board-economy-spending-1ef56ac698f194203848df1968567c85">confidence among U.S. consumers came in weaker</a>&nbsp;than economists expected on Tuesday, and inflation has remained only a bit above the Fed’s 2% target.

Trump has been pushing loudly for more cuts to rates. And&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/interest-rates-economy-inflation-a90fe4835c1e5d381d16e32bc778981d">two of his appointees</a>&nbsp;to the Fed have said recently they may consider cutting rates as soon as the Fed’s next meeting next month.

Fed Chair&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/interest-rates-federal-reserve-trump-inflation-df5b9ac09f0cd283797c6c294a98da9c">Jerome Powell remains more cautious</a>, though he he did indicate Tuesday that the Fed's next move is likely to be a cut.

Asked during testimony before a Congressional committee whether a reduction could arrive as soon as July, Powell said, “We will get to a place where we cut rates, sooner rather than later – but I wouldn’t want to point to a particular meeting. I don’t think we need to be in any rush because the economy is still strong.”

That helped Treasury yields ease in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.29% from 4.34% late Monday.

The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks expectations for Fed action, fell to 3.81% from 3.84%.

On Wall Street, cruise operator Carnival steamed 6.9% higher after the cruise operator delivered a much bigger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected.

CEO Josh Weinstein said it’s seeing strong demand from people booking cruises close to the departure date, and customers are spending strongly once on board. Carnival also raised its forecast for an underlying measure of profit for the full year.

Uber Technologies rose 7.5% after it said customers in Atlanta can use its app to ride in Waymo autonomous vehicles.

Coinbase Global rallied 12.1% as the cryptocurrency exchange rose with the price of bitcoin, which jumped back above $105,000.

All told, the S&amp;P 500 rose 67.01 points to 6,092.18. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 507.24 to 43,089.02, and the Nasdaq composite rallied 281.56 to 19,912.53.

In stock markets abroad, indexes rallied at least 1% everywhere from France to Germany to Japan following the announcement of the Israel-Iran ceasefire. Hong Kong’s jump of 2.1% and South Korea’s leap of 3% were two of the strongest moves.

US stocks approach their all-time high as oil prices tumble

CLOUD COUNTY&nbsp;– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a former Cloud County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer for alleged child sex crimes, according to a media release from the agency.

Just after 4:30 on Monday,&nbsp; KBI agents arrested 36-year-old Brice Berk, of Concordia, at the Republic County Sheriff’s Office after he turned himself over to authorities. Berk was arrested for 12 counts of sexual exploitation of a child. The crimes allege Berk possessed and distributed child pornography.

Berk served as a Cloud County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer until March 2025, after a search warrant was executed at his residence. At that time, evidence was located and seized. The Cloud County Sheriff's Office was fully cooperative with the investigation.

The KBI began investigating after a cyber-tip was submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Following the arrest, Berk was booked into the Republic County Jail on a $20,000 bond.&nbsp; The case is expected to be prosecuted by Cloud County Attorney’s Office, according to the KBI.

Former Kan. corrections officer accused of child sex crimes

Two suspects were arrested in connection with multiple offences after a search warrant was conducted at a Salina home.

According to the Salina Police Department on Monday, June 23rd the Salina Drug Task Force conducted a search warrant in the 800 block of Navajo, in correlation to an ongoing 'drug distribution investigation.'

Police stated that during the search warrant, over 5 pounds of marijuana, cocaine and multiple firearms were located. It was also determined that three children under the age of 18 were located at the residence.

Throughout the search warrant, authorities located and arrested 36-year old, Ira Autrey Jr. and 29-year, old Victoria Ring. Both suspects were booked into the Saline County Jail on the requested charges:

Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute within a 1000’ feet of a school, Possession of a Stimulant with Intent to Distribute within a 1000’ of a school, Felony Possession of Paraphernalia, Possession of Paraphernalia, No Kansas Tax Stamp, Possession of a Stimulant, Possession of Marijuana, and three counts of Aggravated Endangerment of a Child.

It was also determined that three children under the age of 18 were located at the residence.Throughout the search warrant, authorities located and arrested 36-year old, Ira Autrey Jr. and 29-year, old Victoria Ring. Both suspects were booked into the Saline County Jail on the requested charges:Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute within a 1000’ feet of a school, Possession of a Stimulant with Intent to Distribute within a 1000’ of a school, Felony Possession of Paraphernalia, Possession of Paraphernalia, No Kansas Tax Stamp, Possession of a Stimulant, Possession of Marijuana, and three counts of Aggravated Endangerment of a Child. Two suspects arrested and facing multiple charges after search warrant

Abagail Eklund, Age 25, passed away on June 17, 2025, in Salina, Kansas.

Abagail, also known as Abby, went to Southeast of Saline for her high school career and then went on to attend Fort Hays State University.

From the moment she could walk, Abagail was known for her strong will, bright spirit, and pure care for those around her. She radiated joy, love, grace, and unwavering faith, not only with her family and friends but also with those she had only just met. People often said she had a special gift for making others feel seen, heard, and instantly at ease, as if they had been friends for years. Her laughter told stories of its own, warm and comforting, like a hug that felt like coming home.

Abby had a nomadic soul and an adventurous heart, always ready to seize any opportunity to travel and experience life to the fullest. She never turned down a trip to the beach. She loved soaking up the sun, spending time with her family, and getting her well-earned tan. She was also fond of dressing up and sharing laughter while having a fun time with her friends and family. Many would say her spirit was in sync with the sun itself, as her smile had a way of lighting up any room she entered.

She found joy in the little things: listening to her favorite music, immersing herself in a good book, and attending live concerts whenever possible. But what mattered most to her was showing up for the people she loved. Whether it was a family gathering or cheering on her little sister Lilly at softball games, Abby always made time for those who meant the most to her.

Above all, her faith was at the center of everything she did. Though free-spirited and full of life, Abby remained grounded in her belief that God was greater than any challenge she&nbsp;faced.

God shaped Abby into a beautiful woman, someone who was kind, radiant, faithful, and deeply loving. She was a role model for her siblings, a light to her family, and a blessing to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Abby is survived by her father, Chad Eklund (Tracy), and her mother, Amber Banks (Scott); her siblings, Seth Eklund, Bryce Banks, Bryant Banks, Brooke Banks, Lilly Banks, Chelsea Sharma (Eshan), Riley Anderson, and Zayden Anderson. She is also survived by her aunts and uncles: Brandy Gillespie, Kelly Cole (Jeff), Jennifer Anderson (Josh), Melissa Holcom (Chasen), Jake Deatherage (Nicole), and Darrin Deatherage; and her grandparents, John

Eklund (Jeanette), Debbie Hayden, Glenda Eidet, Don Deatherage, Connie Johnson, and Tim Banks, and numerous cousins and friends.

A public viewing will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Roselawn Burial and Cremation (1920 E. Crawford St., Salina, KS 67401) on Friday, June 27. On Saturday, June 28, at 11:00 AM, the funeral service will be held at The Ark Church (2020 S. Ohio St., Salina, KS 67401), followed by a celebration of life at The Venue (638 Francis St., Salina, KS 67401).

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a weekend homicide in Wichita have a suspect in custody.

A 26-year-old male has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon in the 4100 block of West Pine.

Just before 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to a report of a disturbance involving gunshot in the 4100 Block of West Pine in Wichita, according to Police spokesman Andrew Ford. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a male victim had been shot and was transported to a local hospital by private vehicle.

The victim has been identified as Sauhni Stallings, 23, of Wichita. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Following the investigation, officers arrested a 26-year-old Michael Dixon as identified in booking records. He is being held on a requested charge of second-degree murder, according to Ford.

Suspect accused in fatal Kansas shooting 

An ongoing investigation by Salina authorities led to the arrest of a Salina man for allegedly possessing illegal drugs and charging him with numerous offences.

According to the Salina Police Department on Saturday, June 21st at around 7:00 pm, during an ongoing investigation the Salina Drug Task Force located a 47-year old male identified as&nbsp;Alphonse Baham at a home in the 600 block of Johnstown.

Police stated that the Drug Task Force found over '10 grams of suspected Fentanyl' on Baham and a subsequent search warrant followed at the residence. During the search, it was determined that&nbsp;additional items relating to the distribution of fentanyl and two firearms were located. Police also reported that two children under the age of 18 'resided at the home.'

Baham was then arrested and booked into the Saline County Jail. He is the following charges:

Distribution of Fentanyl less than 100 grams, one count of Felony Paraphernalia, one count Distribution of Fentanyl less than a 1000’ from a school, one count of a Drug Tax Stamp, one count of Aggravated Endangerment of a Child, one count of Felony Obstruction, one count of Criminal Possession of a Firearm and one count of misdemeanor Paraphernalia.

According to the Salina Police Department on Sunday, June 22nd officers received report from a 35-year old female victim at a Salina home on the 700 block of Osage. Allegedly, the woman reported she and a 36-year old male identified as, Joshua Hiers got into an argument. Both the female and Hiers live at the home.

Police stated that during the argument, Hiers allegedly 'threatened to strike the female' and 'threatened to kill her.' 

When officers arrived to the scene after the victim called, Hiers was located at the home and was arrested without incident. Hiers was booked into the Saline County Jail and is facing charges of, Criminal Threat and Assault.

Greater Salina Community Foundation awards over $56,000 in grants to 15 organizations

On Tuesday, June 17th – "National Mascot Day" – Dan Meers, the franchise’s original KC Wolf, announced his retirement after 35 years as the team’s beloved mascot and “Director of Shenanigans.”

“Dan Meers has been the heart and soul behind KC Wolf for 35 years,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. “Since joining the organization in 1990, Dan helped establish KC Wolf not only as a source of energy and enthusiasm on gamedays, but as a symbol of pride and passion for all of Chiefs Kingdom. He ensured that his alter ego brought joy to people young and old, and his deep connection to the Kansas City community has made him a beloved figure to generations of Chiefs fans.”

A native of St. Charles, Missouri, Meers graduated from the University of Missouri in 1990, where he served four years as Truman the Tiger. Widely regarded as one of the nation’s top collegiate mascots, he finished second in the 1988 and 1990 National Collegiate Mascot Championships and was named the top overall college mascot in the country in 1989. After graduating with honors, Meers began his professional career as Fredbird with the St. Louis Cardinals. 

After a short stint in professional baseball, Meers joined the Kansas City Chiefs fulltime in 1990 after the Chiefs introduced their brand-new mascot, KC Wolf, in 1989. Over the next 35 years, Meers became the NFL’s longest-tenured mascot by more than a dozen years. He performed at 307 regular and postseason games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium and 375 total games, including preseason matchups. 

Meers also appeared at six international games as KC Wolf, including four American Bowl preseason games (Berlin, 1990; Tokyo, 1994 and 1998; and Monterrey, 1996) and two regular season international contests (London, 2015 and Frankfurt, 2023). He appeared at all five Super Bowls (LIV, LV, LVII, LVIII, LIX) the club has participated in since the 2019 season, including the three wins (LIV, LVII, LVIII). 

KC Wolf was selected to 14 Pro Bowls and participated in nine NFL all-star games during Meers’ tenure.

“To say I’m a blessed man is an understatement. For the past 35 years I’ve had my dream job. I’ve worked for the team I love, in the city I love, with the people I love. After all these years I certainly hope Chiefs Kingdom knows just how much I love and appreciate them. I have memories and stories that will last me a lifetime,” Meers said. “I especially want to thank my family, the Hunt family, the Chiefs organization and the greatest fans in the world for all the love, support, and laughs we’ve shared over the past 35 years. I’m truly a blessed, blessed man!”

Throughout his career, Meers brought the spirit of Chiefs Kingdom as KC Wolf to 12 countries, 38 states, and countless events. He visited U.S. military installations at home and overseas and made approximately 10,000 appearances, including community events, birthday parties, banquets, weddings, grand openings, and more.

Meers also developed multiple speaking engagement programs aimed at promoting character, positivity and purpose. His school, corporate, community, and faith-based presentations helped define KC Wolf not just as a mascot, but as “a character with character.” KC Wolf became the first NFL mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006. 

In 2020, Meers became the first – and remains the only – mascot to be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. He was also twice recognized by the franchise for his exceptional contributions to the club and the community, earning the Chiefs Presidential Award in 1993 and the Chiefs Service Award in 2016.

In addition to his work as KC Wolf, Meers is a noted motivational speaker and author of two books: "Wolves Can’t Fly and Mascot on a Mission." All proceeds from books sales have supported global missions and ministries through the 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Character That Counts. 

Meers has made numerous trips internationally, serving orphans and underserved communities around the world, including in Honduras, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, India, and Tanzania. Judith Ann Jameson, 81, Concordia, Kansas passed away at her home, surrounded by her loving family, on June 18, 2025. She was the oldest child, born to Romaine and Elizabeth (Peters) LaBonte in Concordia, Kansas on August 30, 1943.

Judy attended school in Aurora, Kansas and graduated high school in 1961.

She married James Lanoue, Jr and this union brought two children, Sheri and Brent. They later divorced.

Judy worked in the office at Boogaarts and at Pawnee Mental Health Center. She raised and boarded dogs for a time. She also worked as a bartender at the American Legion from1985 until recently.

She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and American Legion Auxiliary Post 76. She enjoyed working and her pets. She was a tremendous animal lover. She had a huge heart and would do anything for anyone. Most of all, she was an excellent mother.

Judy will be missed by her children, Sheri Krause (Tony) of Concordia, KS and Brent Lanoue (Karen) of Concordia, KS; her grandchildren, Austin Fall, Alex Fall, Kira Krause, Taylor Walker (Kendall), and Paige Lanoue; five great grandchildren; brothers Mike LaBonte (Karen), and Jerry LaBonte; five nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Terry LaBonte, and a brother Jim LaBonte and his wife Sherilyn.

Daniel Gordon Tarum was born on December 18, 1957, to Melvin and Eunice Tarum in McPherson, KS&nbsp; He passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at his home in McPherson, KS.

In his growing up years, Daniel was involved in music, playing oboe in the band and orchestra, tenor sax in the marching band, and electric bass in Jazz Ensemble.&nbsp; He also played in a band called “Ozone.”&nbsp; He attended and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church.&nbsp; He achieved the Rank of Eagle in Boy Scouts.&nbsp; He graduated from McPherson High School in 1976, then attended Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; He continued to play in the jazz ensemble under the direction of Bryce Luty, while achieving his Associates of Arts Degree in Electronics in 1979.&nbsp; Later, he continued his education at Wichita State University, earning a B.S in General Studies in 1985, and a Master’s in Communication in 1989.

From a very young age, he always had a fascination with and understanding of electronics.&nbsp; He enjoyed creating his own projects and taking apart electrical equipment, and sometimes putting them back together.&nbsp; He worked in broadcast engineering for KAKE TV and KSN TV, and KMUW and KHCC Radio stations.&nbsp; At one point while he was attending WSU, he was the Chief Engineer/Operator for up to 4 radio stations simultaneously.&nbsp; He transitioned to working at Farmland Industries in Hutchinson as Communications Engineer, and then Western Wireless where he mapped and designed optimal cell tower locations and systems operations.&nbsp; Over the years, he worked as a communications engineer for Electronic Sales and Service in Wichita, and also had his own company, Digisound, providing sound equipment and engineering for concerts and events.

He was a life-long learner – he obtained his pilot’s license, he was a ham radio operator, he tutored high school students in math and physics, he would listen to radio programs and podcasts and watch documentaries and have 1-2 books he was reading.&nbsp; He loved traveling to the mountains of Colorado with friends.&nbsp; He enjoyed target shooting.&nbsp; He especially enjoyed his 2 special dogs, Tyrone and Coco.&nbsp; He treasured time with family, making trips out to Iola, KS, to be with his sister Julie’s family, and with helping care for his nephews and niece in Wichita.

Dan had lived in Wichita from 1979 – 2015, when he moved back to McPherson to help care first for his mom as she battled Alzheimer’s, and then for his dad as he battled lung issues and declining health.&nbsp; Dan found his church home with many family and friends at New Gottland Lutheran Church.&nbsp; He would frequently speak of Bible Studies, sermons, going out to lunch, having help from friends, and being a part of a welcoming community.

Dan was preceded in death by grandparents Atle and Jennie (Hansen) Tarum; grandparents Frank and Evangeline (Eva Burk) Bentson; sister and brother-in-law Julie and David Tidd; parents Melvin and Eunice Tarum.&nbsp;

He is survived by sister and brother-in-law, Nancy (David) Woodruff of Wichita, KS and their children Brandon, Kristin, and Ryan; sister-in-law, Laura Tidd of Crown Point, IN; and by Julie and David’s children: Josh (Emily) Tidd and Ezekiel, Eva, and Alice of Lincoln NE, Joel (Leslie) Tidd and Micah of Bremerton, WA, Jason (Kaitlyn) Alatidd of Topeka, KS, Jonathan (Ellen) Tidd and Charlotte of Manhattan, KS, Jennifer Tidd of Shawnee, KS, Jessica (RJ) Stovall of Emporia KS; and numerous cousins.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Top prospect&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-caglianone-b777242d68ce78c9f85b19d1e4464317">Jac Caglianone went deep twice</a>&nbsp;for his first two homers in the majors, and the Kansas City Royals finished their first three-game sweep at Texas since 2003 with a 4-1 win over the Rangers on Thursday.

Vinnie Pasquantino added a two-run shot, and Michael Wacha held the Rangers hitless until Wyatt Langford's one-out single in the sixth. The right-hander allowed two hits and a run with five strikeouts in six innings.

Wacha (4-6) was the third Kansas City starter to win for the first time in June as part of the sweep, with the Royals coming off a 0-6 homestand that matched their longest losing streak of the season. Kansas City already had clinched its first series win in Arlington in 11 years.

Carlos Estévez pitched a perfect ninth for his AL-leading 21st save and second of the series.

Pasquantino's team-leading 11th homer opened the scoring in the first off right-hander Shawn Armstrong, the starter in a bullpen game for Texas. A run of 11 consecutive scoreless appearances ended for Armstrong (2-2).

Caglianone greeted Jacob Latz with his first big league homer leading off the second. The 22-year-old won a lefty-lefty matchup with a 387-foot drive into the Texas bullpen in right-center field.

The 6-foot-5 Caglianone mastered the lefty-lefty thing again to start the ninth, sending Robert Garcia's first pitch 439 feet over the Texas bullpen.

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.&nbsp;

Just before 7a.m. June 15,&nbsp; a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 75 near 118th Road for an alleged traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse. The investigation resulted in the arrest of 54-year-old Netawaka resident, Travis James Mullins.

He was the passenger in the vehicle and was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A man was arrested in Hays after a Houston-based civilian group conducted a sting operation.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said 45-year-old Lucan Wayne Paramore of Plainville, Kansas, was arrested for electronic solicitation after allegedly attempting to meet someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl for sex.

Scheibler said the case came to the department’s attention on June 16 after a group called Predator Poachers lured Paramore to Big Creek Crossing at 2918 Vine St.

Scheibler said no actual minor was ever at risk, as the group that provided information to responding officers had been posing as a child online.

According to the video caption, Paramore allegedly carved the nonexistent minor’s name into his arm as a display of affection.

Paramore was booked into the Ellis County Jail, where he remains in custody. Scheibler said all parties are innocent until proven guilty. The investigation is ongoing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. State Department said Wednesday it is restarting the suspended process for foreigners applying for student visas but all applicants will now be required to unlock their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/harvard-visa-applicants-social-media-d871408efca521e2dee038da2f22f8c7">social media accounts for government review</a>.

The department said consular officers will be on the lookout for posts and messages that could be deemed hostile to the United States, its government, culture, institutions or founding principles.

In a notice made public Wednesday, the department said it had rescinded its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-china-student-visa-republicans-056bb72cd0f06f6ea0148c3bbcac9be6">May suspension of student visa processing</a>&nbsp;but said new applicants who refuse to set their social media accounts to “public” and allow them to be reviewed may be rejected. It said a refusal to do so could be a sign they are trying to evade the requirement or hide their online activity.

The Trump administration last month temporarily halted the scheduling of new visa interviews for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/international-students-visas-terminated-trump-sevis-9f85c3c58a4b74c354df0d7d993cf34c">foreign students</a>&nbsp;hoping to study in the U.S. while preparing to expand the screening of their activity on social media, officials said.

Students around the world have been waiting anxiously for U.S. consulates to reopen appointments for visa interviews, as the window left to book their travel and make housing arrangements narrows ahead of the start of the school year.

Students from China, India, Mexico and the Philippines have posted on social media sites that they have been refreshing visa booking websites and closely watching press briefings of the State Department to get any indication of when appointment bookings might resume.

“Under new guidance, consular officers will conduct a comprehensive and thorough vetting of all student and exchange visitor applicants,” the department said in a statement.

“To facilitate this vetting” applicants “will be asked to adjust the privacy settings on all their social media profiles to ‘public,’” it said. “The enhanced social media vetting will ensure we are properly screening every single person attempting to visit our country.”

In internal guidance sent to consular officers, the department said they should be looking for “any indications of hostility toward the citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles of the United States.”

US resumes visas for foreign students but demands access to social media 

DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) — A jury found Karen Read not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges Wednesday in the 2022 death of her Boston police officer boyfriend, a case that attracted legions of true crime followers who erupted in cheers when word of the acquittal spread outside court.

The same jury found her guilty of a lesser charge of drunken driving. The jury handed down its decision after deliberating for at least 22 hours since June 13.

Cheers from the crowd outside could be heard in the courtroom as the verdict was read. With cheering supporters, Read departed the courthouse with her attorneys and family.

“No one has fought harder for justice for John O’Keefe than I have," Read said.

The verdict came nearly a year after a separate jury deadlocked over Read’s involvement in the January 2022 death of John O’Keefe and resulted in a judge&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/karen-read-boston-police-murder-trial-abc6d1ea75a39d00b731ee4e76676d3a">declaring a mistrial</a>.

It’s a huge victory for Read’s lawyers, who have long asserted she was framed by police after dropping O’Keefe off at a party at the home of a fellow officer. Prosecutors argued the 45-year-old Read hit O’Keefe, 46, with her SUV before driving away, but the defense maintained O’Keefe was killed inside the home and later dragged outside.

Read faced charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene outside Boston. A second-degree murder conviction would have carried a life sentence.

It’s finally over. Karen Read’s free,” Aidan Kearney said. “Everything I did was worth it, and we finally have justice. Instead, she drove away in her SUV.“She was drunk. She hit him and she left him to die,” he said.Defense attorney Alan Jackson rejected the idea that there was ever a collision at all. He and the defense called forward expert witnesses who agreed.“There is no evidence that John was hit by a car. None.
