After securing a split with Sacred Heart earlier this week, the Southeast of Saline baseball team made the trek to Chapman on Friday where despite posting double-digit run totals in both games the Irish got the better of them in a sweep.

With finals of 15-10 and 16-10, the Trojans fall to 7-5 on the year after their 6-0 start, but still remain a sturdy 3-1 in league play.

Much like their clashes with the Knight both games were back-and-forth affairs, and after a pair of lead changes early on the two teams were level at five going into the fifth of game one.

The Trojans struck first, bringing in two big runs to reclaim the lead in the top half of the inning, but Chapman bounced back in a big way with a colossal nine-run fifth to put the game out of reach.

SES would claw three runs back in the seventh, but ran out of outs before their comeback could be realized, dropping game one 15-10.

In game two, the Irish would once again find themselves on the board first with a lone run in the opening inning, but Southeast quickly undid their progress with six in the second and four more in the third to hold a 10-5 lead going into the fourth.

With weather fast approaching, the Irish bunkered down and got to work on yet another massive frame, plating 11 runs to quickly turn the tables and take a 16-10 lead.

That lead would hold as this time around, the Trojans weren’t even given a full opportunity to respond, as lighting brought about an early end to game two.

With half the season in the books already, SES will resume league play next week when they travel to Beloit for the Trojan War on Thursday, continuing a brutal stretch of four straight road doubleheaders.

Trojans drop two in weather-shortened doubleheader with Chapman

After falling in a sweep at the hands of the Abilene Cowboys last week, the Southeast of Saline baseball team bounced back on Tuesday, securing a split with rival Sacred Heart to move to 7-3 on the year.

With a 13-8 win and an 8-2 loss, SES holds position in a tie for second with Beloit, as both Trojan teams sit at 3-1 in league play, behind only Sacred Heart at 5-1.

Despite a few hard-fought battles, Southeast still boasts an impressive +72 run differential this season, picking up another run in Salina this week.

Game one was another back-and-forth affair as SES scratched across two early runs to lead off the first before the Knights responded with a five-run inning of their own.

After two silent frames, the Trojans got back on the board with one run in the fourth and fifth, but a three-run answer allowed Sacred Heart to take an 8-4 lead into the final two innings.

Down to their final six outs, Southeast got to work right away and exploded for a five-run sixth to reclaim the lead before burying the Knights with a four-run seventh to secure the 13-8 win.

Five different Trojans would record a multi-RBI game, with Landen Allen, Trever Keller, Cole Gilpin, Mac Chambers, and Jase VanAmburg accounting for all but one of the total runs driven in on the day.

After the early Sacred Heart outburst, the ball was handed to Cole Gilpin, and the sophomore delivered on the bump, completing 6.2 while allowing just three runs on five hits, striking out eight, and issuing just one walk.

Game two was a pitcher's duel early, with the Knights getting on the board first with one run in the home half of the second.

SES would waste little time tying things up, but a trio of Sacred Heart runs in the third and fourth proved too much to overcome as the Trojans fell in an eventual 8-2 final.

Southeast will be back in action on Friday for the second of four-straight doubleheaders on the road when they travel to Chapman for a pair of non-league matchups with the Irish.

Southeast secures split with Sacred Heart in first of four road doubleheaders

With two meets this week, the Southeast of Saline track and field teams took the opportunity to test out their depth at the Ellsworth Invitational, giving several of their younger athletes the opportunity to compete while resting their veterans and stars.

Despite not finishing in the top five as a team on either side, several of these individuals capitalized on their opportunities and should continue to play a role for the Trojans and Lady Trojans down the stretch.

On the boy’s side, it was a great day for Caden Parry, who was one of just two athletes to make a podium, taking silver in the 110m hurdles.

Parry was joined on the medal stand by Tate Nurnberg, who collected bronze in the high jump, while Isaiah Kejr rounded out boys in the top five with a strong finish in the 800.

On the girl’s side, Elliana Smith posted several strong finishes, taking 6th in the 100m hurdles, and collecting the lone top-five finish for the Lady Trojans in the pole vault.

Both teams will get back to work on Friday for this year’s Smoky Valley Invitational, which will be held at 4:00 on the campus of Southeast of Saline.

Trojan track puts youth on display at Ellsworth Invitational

The Southeast of Saline softball team continued their impressive run on Tuesday, steamrolling Sacred Heart in the first of four road doubleheaders to remain perfect on the year.

With colossal wins of 20-0 and 18-0, the Lady Trojans move to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in league play, matching pace with Beloit as one of just two remaining undefeated teams in the NCAA.

Southeast has now outscored their first eight opponents by an unheard-of 120 runs, winning seven of the eight by mercy rule.

SES wasted no time picking up right where they left off again in Salina, striking for 11 runs in the top of the first to take a massive lead on their league rivals.

From there, the Lady Trojans would add four more in the second and five in the third before the game was mercifully ended in yet another early shutout.

11 different players would grab a bat in this contest, with seven recording a hit, and six driving in at least one run, led by Brielle Ptacek, Carly Commerford, and Kimber Ogorzolka, who combined to go 5/6 and accounted for seven of Southeast’s ten runs driven in.

In the circle, Bryna Baird narrowly missed out on perfection, recording all nine outs including five Ks, and allowing just one runner to reach base on a lone hit in the 20-0 win.

While the run tallies were more spread out, game two saw more of the same both in ruthless scoring and flawless pitching.

The Lady Trojans scratched across a pair in the first, three in the second, two more in the third, six in the fourth, and five in the fifth to close out an 18-0 victory.

This time around it was Lexi Jacobson who stepped into the circle for SES and went to work with dominant stuff, striking out 11 batters and allowing just one hit in another shutout.

Offensively, both Ptacek and Ogorzolka put on encore performances, driving in seven of the 14 runs that would come from a Lady Trojan RBI on the day.

Of the twelve players to record at least one plate appearance, nine reached base safely as Southeast continues to flex it’s depth in big wins.

The Lady Trojans will be back in action for another doubleheader on Friday when SES makes the trip to Chapman to battle the Lady Irish.

Lady Trojans steamroll Sacred Heart to remain perfect at 8-0

The Salina Education Foundation has selected its 2023 Loan Initiative for Future Teachers (LIFT) recipients. 

The following six recipients were selected from a pool of 13 applicants by a committee consisting of Salina Education Foundation Trustees, USD 305 staff, and community members.

Vanessa Arceo- Vanessa is a senior at South High School. She plans to attend Kansas Wesleyan University or Fort Hays State University and major in music education. Vanessa is bilingual in English and Spanish. She plays the violin for the Kansas Wesleyan University orchestra and the Salina Youth Symphony. Her hope is to bring people together through music.

Isaac French- Isaac is a graduate of Central High School and attends Kansas State University, where he is vice president of West Hall. He is majoring in secondary education and plans to teach social studies. Isaac wishes to create a safe place for his students to learn and develop through an understanding of the past.

Grace Hilbert-Grace is a graduate of South High School and Hutchinson Community College. She attends Wichita State University while working as an instructional assistant at Heusner Elementary School. Grace is studying elementary education. She enjoys working with children with disabilities and volunteers with her mother at “Night to Shine”, an organization that provides a prom for people with disabilities. Grace hopes to show her students that they are special.

Sara Orr- Sara is a graduate of South High School and attends Fort Hays State University, majoring in secondary education. Since 2016, Sara has worked at South High School as a para-educator and instructional assistant. Sara said that her co-workers and mentors have been a tremendous help to her. She enjoys advocating for her students’ voices to be heard.

Aubrey Powell-Aubrey is a senior at South High School. She plans to attend Butler Community College and study secondary education with a focus in mathematics. Aubrey said that her passion for math education began in middle school while doing pre-algebra. Finding slope and using Pythagorean Theorem was a highlight of her days as a middle school student.

Alaina Yianakopulos-Alaina is a graduate of Southeast of Saline High School and attends Emporia State University. She is majoring in elementary education with an emphasis in special education. Alaina shared that her experience working with a child with Down Syndrome was an incredible experience and helped shape her desire to study special education. Alaina says she believes she can help the world by bettering the lives of those kids who don’t get the same opportunities as the rest of us.

LIFT recipients receive up to $5,000 in forgivable loans, renewable annually after completion of their freshman year in college. Upon becoming certified teachers, they are eligible for hire to teach in USD 305 schools. Loans are forgivable for each year they teach in Salina public schools. The LIFT program is supported by charitable donations from individuals, local charitable foundations, and Saline County businesses.

Salina Education Foundation is governed by a volunteer board of trustees. Established in 1987, it endeavors to promote and support educational excellence by providing resources to enhance opportunities for the students and staff of Salina’s public schools.

Salina Education Foundation announces LIFT recipients

The Southeast of Saline track and field team’s continued their strong start at this year’s Concordia Invitational on Thursday, with the defending champion boy’s team winning their second of two meets, and the girl’s team placing fourth amidst the eight-team field.

The boys’ closed out their meet with 146 points, 24 clear of their next closest competitor in Marysville despite missing several of their top sprinters.

The team collected a total of six gold medals on the day, sweeping the 4x1 and 4x800m relays. Individually Nakari Morrical-Palmer put on a show with three first-place finishes of his own in the 100m dash, 400, and triple jump.

Meanwhile, it was a solid day for the girl’s team, who ended the day with 74 points, 52.5 back of the eventual winners from Beloit.

Ashley Prochazka claimed both first-place finishes on the day in the 1600 and 3200.

Here is a look at all of the Trojan and Lady Trojan podium finishers from this year’s Concordia Invitational.

Trojan track takes first and fourth at Concordia Invitational

The Southeast of Saline baseball team battled on Thursday but ultimately fell short in their first losses of the season at the hands of the Abilene Cowboys.

With finals of 13-12 and 11-3 the Trojans fall to 6-2 but do remain undefeated in league play.

The opener of this doubleheader was a real battle, with the lead changing hands five different times, and a late comeback effort for SES coming up just short.

The Trojans would get on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead into the second, and holding a 3-1 lead into the third.

From there, Abilene would strike for four runs of their own to claim their first lead, and after trading runs in the fourth it was Southeast’s turn to tack on three more to reclaim a 7-6 advantage.

The back and forth continued in the sixth with the Cowboys getting all three runs back, and down to their final three outs, the Trojans strung together two in the seventh to send the game to extras.

In the eighth, Abilene kept on rolling plating four massive runs, and while SES never quit, taking back three in the home half, they ran out of outs to give, falling in an extra-inning heartbreaker 13-12.

Game two would not be so close as after two innings of a pitcher's duel, the Cowboys struck for five runs in the third, slowly sprinkling in more in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to complete the sweep in an 11-3 victory.

The two Abilene hurlers combined to toss six innings, allowing just three runs on five hits, striking out five, and walking just three in the process.

The Trojans will get back to work on Tuesday as they travel to Sacred Heart to resume league play in what will be the first of four straight doubleheaders on the road.

 </figure>The Southeast of Saline baseball team battled on Thursday but ultimately fell short in their first losses of the season at the hands of the Abilene Cowboys.With finals of 13-12 and 11-3 the Trojans fall to 6-2 but do remain undefeated in league play.The opener of this doubleheader was a real battle, with the lead changing hands five different times, and a late comeback effort for SES coming up just short.The Trojans would get on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead into the second, and holding a 3-1 lead into the third.From there, Abilene would strike for four runs of their own to claim their first lead, and after trading runs in the fourth it was Southeast’s turn to tack on three more to reclaim a 7-6 advantage.The back and forth continued in the sixth with the Cowboys getting all three runs back, and down to their final three outs, the Trojans strung together two in the seventh to send the game to extras.In the eighth, Abilene kept on rolling plating four massive runs, and while SES never quit, taking back three in the home half, they ran out of outs to give, falling in an extra-inning heartbreaker 13-12.Game two would not be so close as after two innings of a pitcher's duel, the Cowboys struck for five runs in the third, slowly sprinkling in more in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to complete the sweep in an 11-3 victory.The two Abilene hurlers combined to toss six innings, allowing just three runs on five hits, striking out five, and walking just three in the process.The Trojans will get back to work on Tuesday as they travel to Sacred Heart to resume league play in what will be the first of four straight doubleheaders on the road.For continuing coverage of SES baseball all season long, stay tuned to the Salina Post.

Trojans drop two to Abilene, fall to 6-2 on the season

After breezing through their first four opponents, the Southeast of Saline softball team met a real challenge on Thursday, but still prevailed, sweeping Abilene to remain undefeated on the year.

With wins of 8-4 and 14-4, the Lady Trojans rolled to 6-0 on the season, maintaining a ridiculous +82 run differential in the process.

The Cowgirls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one, but SES promptly struck back to tie things up in the home half of the second.

Abilene would waste no time formulating a response with two runs of their own to retake the lead in the third, but a six-run fourth for the Lady Trojans and shutdown pitching down the stretch would put the game out of reach as SES held on to win 8-4.

After pitching her way out of several jams, Bryna Baird turned the ball over to Carly Commerford in the fifth, and the senior went to work without hesitation finishing out the final 2.2 without allowing a single runner to reach base.

Offensively it was another big day for Chase Gilpin and Carly Commerford, who combined to drive in five of the Lady Trojan's eight runs on the day.

After receiving their first real scare of the season, Southeast came back and dominated game two, holding Abilene to just one run through the first four innings.

Meanwhile, the Lady Trojans struck for a run in the first, and six in both the second and third to take a commanding 13-1 lead into the top of the fifth.

The Cowgirls made the most of their last gasp, plating three runs to keep their hopes alive, but SES got the lone run they needed in the bottom of the frame to collect their fifth mercy-rule victory of the season by a 14-4 final.

This time around, it was Lexi Jacobson’s time to shine in the circle, as the junior allowed just one earned run on five hits, striking out four and walking two in a complete game effort.

At the plate, Brielle Ptacek and Lexi Jacobson led the charge as part of a day that saw them combine to go 6/7 with six RBI.

Lady Trojans sweep Abilene to remain perfect on the year

SALINA -&nbsp;Luetta B. Harrell, 93, passed away April 1, 2023 while under hospice care at Presbyterian Manor. Luetta was born May 15, 1929, in Ellis, Kansas, the seventh of ten children belonging to Walter and Eva (Sauer) Haneke. 

Luetta graduated from Ellis High School in 1946 and went on to marry George Harrell of Barnard, Kansas on February 22nd, 1948. They were married fifty-one years and spent most of their married lives in Salina. 

Luetta began her career as a receptionist at Waddell &amp; Reed and worked her way up to Financial Advisor where she helped a multitude of people manage their finances for over 30 years.

Luetta was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and was active in the Ladies Elks Club of Salina. As a first generation American, she enjoyed cooking Austrian recipes her mother, Eva, brought with her when she immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island.

Luetta was preceded in death by her husband George Harrell in 1999; three sisters, and four brothers. 

She is survived by her daughter Joleen Stein (Steve) of Gypsum; grandchildren Melynda McCabe (Chris) and Thomas Stein (Elane); great-grandchildren Jack, Jace, Addie, Ellyanna; granddaughters Bailey Harrell, Madison Harrell; son Mike Harrell; and siblings Donna Henderson and Don Haneke.

The Southeast of Saline baseball team kept the good times rolling in their home opener on Tuesday, sweeping Republic County to open league play at 2-0.

With two identical victories of 16-1, the Trojans stay perfect at 6-0 on the year, while the Buffaloes fall to 0-8.

Once again, Southeast wasted no time at all jumping on their opponent, striking for ten runs in the bottom of the first to open game one with a bang.

From there, SES added two in the second, three in the third, and one more in the fourth to officially put the mercy rule into effect.

Each of the top eight in the lineup recorded at least one hit, with Grady Gebhardt continuing to swing an unreal bat, driving in six runs as part of a 4/4 day that saw the freshman hit for the cycle.

It was also another dominant day for Trojan pitching as Ben Heinrich and Greyson Pembelton combined for four innings of two-hit ball, surrendering just one run on two hits and striking out six.

Southeast got off to a comparably slower start in game two, taking a 1-0 lead into the second before exploding for a ten-run frame that would ultimately carry them to victory.

Once again the Buffaloes were able to scratch across one, this time with a solo home run in the top of the third, but a five-run Trojan fifth would allow SES to cruise to yet another shortened win.

In game two, 13 different Trojans would grab a bat, with eleven reaching base safely, eight driving in at least one run, and six recording at least one hit.

The greatness on the bump continued as well as this time around Cole Gilpin and Mac Chambers tossed four complete innings, allowing just one run on two hits and recording ten strikeouts to just three walks.

SES now boasts a run differential of +80, having outscored their first six opponents 85-5, and will look to continue this impressive run on Thursday when they play host to Abilene in a non-league doubleheader.

Grady Gebhardt hits for cycle as Trojans sweep Buffaloes

After dismantling Smoky Valley on opening day, the Southeast of Saline softball team returned to Gypsum to open the home and league portions of their schedule and picked up right where they left off in a dominant sweep of Republic County.

With wins of 17-2 and 15-0, the Lady Trojans advance to 4-0, having won every game of their season by mercy rule, while the Lady Buffs fall to 2-4.

Game one of this doubleheader was over shortly after it began, as SES took a two-run lead into the second inning before putting up a 14-spot and slamming the door shut in a three-inning 17-2 win.

Of the nine batters in the lineup, four would record multi-hit days, and at the top of the order, Carly Commerford, Maddie Harris, and Brielle Ptacek combined to tally seven of the team’s ten RBI.

It was another gem in the circle for Bryna Baird and Carly Commerford, who combined to fan five, allowing just two runs on four hits, and a lone walk.

Immaculate pitching continued for the Lady Trojans in game two as Lexi Jacobson was handed the start and delivered a beauty, completing a no-hitter and allowing just two total runners to reach while recording six strikeouts.

Jacobson’s teammates provided another flurry of run support as Southeast struck for six in the first, one in the second, five in the third, and three in the fourth to put the final nail in the Republic County coffin.

While four different players recorded yet another multi-RBI game, the spotlight was stolen by Chase Gilpin, who drove in four runs on two hits, crossing the plate to contribute a fifth.

SES has now outscored their first four opponents 75-7 and is off to a roaring start in league play, joining Beloit as the only other undefeated team in the NCAA.

The Lady Trojans will continue their advance at home on Thursday when they welcome in the Cowgirls of Abilene at 3:30.

Jacobson's no hitter helps Southeast softball sweep Republic County

BRIDGEPORT - A minor earthquake rattled part of far southern Saline Count Friday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck at 1:26 p.m. Friday east-southeast of Bridgeport. It was centered just north of the Saline-McPherson county line east of S. Hopkins Road.

 </figure>According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck at 1:26 p.m. Friday east-southeast of Bridgeport. It was centered just north of the Saline-McPherson county line east of S. Hopkins Road.

Small quake shakes part of far southern Saline County Friday

After opening their regular season with a sweep of the South Central Shootout last week, the Southeast of Saline baseball team picked up right where they left off collecting a pair of dominant wins on the road in Smoky Valley.

With victories of 10-0 and 10-3 on Thursday the Trojans move to 4-0 on the year while the Vikings fall to 0-2.

Things started well for SES in game one as the Trojans struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first before turning the ball over to Jake Gebhardt on the hill.&nbsp;

It was another immaculate day for Gebhardt, who tossed four scoreless innings of three-hit ball, allowing just one walk and striking out four.

The Vikings would hold Southeast scoreless through the next three frames but as the bats warmed up, Gebhardt passed the baton to Trever Keller, who picked up right where the senior left off, fanning three and allowing just one hit in three innings to complete the shutout.

The Trojans would scratch across another run in the fifth and sixth before putting things out of reach with a six-run seventh to secure the 10-0 victory.

Offensively, multi-hit days were had by Luke and Grady Gebhardt, who combined to go five for eight with three RBI.

After a pair of scoreless innings to start game two, Southeast got right back to it, striking for six big runs in the third inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

This time, it was Landen Allen’s time to shine on the bump, and he delivered, allowing just two runs on two hits through five, striking out seven batters in the process.

The Trojan bats would tack on an additional run in the fourth and three more in the sixth, and while Smoky Valley tried to claw their way back late, one additional run was all they could muster as they fell 10-3 on their own home field.

In game two it was sophomore Cole Gilpin who came in to slam the door shut, allowing the lone run on three hits, fanning three batters in his two innings.

At the dish the top five in the order spent the afternoon raking, accounting for nine of the Trojan’s ten hits and five of their 8 RBI.

SES will be back in action next week on Tuesday, April 4th when they open the home and league portions of their schedule with Republic County at 3:00.

Trojans sweep Smoky Valley to move to 4-0 on young season

The Southeast of Saline softball team began their season with a bang on Thursday, decimating Smoky Valley in an opening day sweep with run-rule-shortened wins of 19-3 and 24-2.

With this pair of victories, the Lady Trojans open their campaign at 2-0 with a run differential of +38 while the Lady Vikings stumble out of the gates at 0-2.

SES wasted no time jumping all over Smoky Valley, striking for six runs in their first round of at-bats of the year.&nbsp;

The Lady Vikings would respond with three of their own in the bottom of the first but from there Bryna Baird would slam the door shut, closing out her outing with four innings of three-hit ball, striking out four and walking just two.

Southeast would tack on an additional three runs in the second, four in the third, and six in the fourth to secure a resounding 19-3 mercy rule victory.

When all was said and done, the Lady Trojans tallied 11 hits and took full advantage of a disastrous day in the field for Smoky Valley, who committed an egregious ten errors on the day.

Offensively each of the top six members in the lineup drove in at least one run, led by Chase Gilpin and Carly Commerford, who accounted for eight of the 14 RBI on the day.

In game two, SES picked up right where they left off, striking for six runs in the first, eight in the second, and ten in the third to carry a 24-0 advantage into the home half of the final inning.

The Lady Vikings were able to scratch two runs across in the bottom of the frame but it was far too little too late as the purple and white cruised to a 24-2 victory.

This time around, the phenomenal pitching effort belonged to Lexi Jacobson, who allowed just two runs on five hits, struck out three, and walked two.

At the plate, the Lady Trojans contributed 1-9, as 11 different players grabbed a bat, nine collected a hit, and ten either drove in a run or crossed the plate to score themselves.

Southeast will be back in action next week on Tuesday, April 4th when they open the home and league portions of their schedule with Republic County at 3:00.

 </figure>The Southeast of Saline softball team began their season with a bang on Thursday, decimating Smoky Valley in an opening day sweep with run-rule-shortened wins of 19-3 and 24-2.With this pair of victories, the Lady Trojans open their campaign at 2-0 with a run differential of +38 while the Lady Vikings stumble out of the gates at 0-2.SES wasted no time jumping all over Smoky Valley, striking for six runs in their first round of at-bats of the year.&nbsp;The Lady Vikings would respond with three of their own in the bottom of the first but from there Bryna Baird would slam the door shut, closing out her outing with four innings of three-hit ball, striking out four and walking just two.Southeast would tack on an additional three runs in the second, four in the third, and six in the fourth to secure a resounding 19-3 mercy rule victory.When all was said and done, the Lady Trojans tallied 11 hits and took full advantage of a disastrous day in the field for Smoky Valley, who committed an egregious ten errors on the day.Offensively each of the top six members in the lineup drove in at least one run, led by Chase Gilpin and Carly Commerford, who accounted for eight of the 14 RBI on the day.In game two, SES picked up right where they left off, striking for six runs in the first, eight in the second, and ten in the third to carry a 24-0 advantage into the home half of the final inning.The Lady Vikings were able to scratch two runs across in the bottom of the frame but it was far too little too late as the purple and white cruised to a 24-2 victory.This time around, the phenomenal pitching effort belonged to Lexi Jacobson, who allowed just two runs on five hits, struck out three, and walked two.At the plate, the Lady Trojans contributed 1-9, as 11 different players grabbed a bat, nine collected a hit, and ten either drove in a run or crossed the plate to score themselves.Southeast will be back in action next week on Tuesday, April 4th when they open the home and league portions of their schedule with Republic County at 3:00.For continuing coverage of Lady Trojan softball all season long, stay tuned to the Salina Post.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has moved Dickinson and Ottawa counties into a red flag warning in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Friday. The fire weather watch is no longer in effect.

West to southwest winds sustained at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph and relative humidity as low as 15 to 30 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will spread rapidly. Outdoor burning should not occur.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning for extreme grassland fire danger in effect from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area.

West winds at 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, will be strongest over south-central and southeast Kansas. Additionally, relative humidity as low as 15 percent is forecast, with the lowest percentages over southern Kansas.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

UPDATE: Red flag warnings issued for more area counties

With opening day scheduled for Thursday, the Southeast of Saline softball team is gearing up for what should be another exciting season on the heels of a 16-6 campaign last year.

Despite graduating five seniors, the Lady Trojans return their entire lineup from a year ago, including all three of their pitchers in Bryna Baird, Lexi Jacobson, and Carly Commerford, who all boast ace-like stuff in the circle as part of a loaded rotation.

“Having those three back for another season is really exciting and as a coach, I feel really spoiled,” SES head coach Pesha Ptacek said. “Sometimes it’s tricky to figure out how to use them all best but luckily they’re very unselfish players and they’re willing to do whatever it takes to put the team in the best position to win.”

Defensively, Maddie Harris is expected to reprise her role as the Lady Trojan backstop, with Carly Commerford joining Brielle Ptacek, Chase Gilpin, and Kimber Ogorzolka on the infield while Jayci Burgardt, Lexi Jacobson, and Savannah Sutton patrol the outfield.

With another year of experience and another season of summer ball under their belts, this year’s Southeast squad will be eager to get back on the diamond when they square off with Smoky Valley on Thursday.

“I’ve often been gifted with softball-savvy girls who have worked with very good summer coaches,” Ptacek said. “It’s awesome to have girls with a competitive softball background and as a team, our understanding of the game is very high. It also feels like the first time in forever that we have a truly veteran group.”

After falling just short of an NCAA title, and dropping their semifinal matchup in last year’s regional tournament, expectations in Gypsum will be exceptionally high for a team with the potential to make some real noise in Class 3A.

“We’ve had good seasons in the past but not good enough,” Ptacek said. “Missing out on the league championship last year was a blow and they’re planning to take that back come hell or high water. Honestly, anything short of a regional championship would be disappointing to this group, making it back to Manhattan is definitely the goal.”
