Sister Donna Gottschalk, CSA, formerly Sister Philip, died peacefully November 2, 2022, at St. Francis Home, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Donna Marie was born in La Crosse, Kansas, on May 6, 1940.&nbsp; She was the first daughter after eight sons born to Philip Gottschalk and Lidwina Werth Gottschalk. Following Donna, three more boys and two girls made the family of fourteen complete.

Donna spent her childhood keeping up with her brothers, doing farm and household chores, and learning very fast how to play baseball and football with the best. When Donna was six, the family moved to Hays, Kansas, to fulfill her parents’ desire for their children to have a Catholic education.&nbsp; In grade school and high school, Donna was taught by the Sisters of St. Agnes.&nbsp; From early on, she wanted to be just like the sisters. After high school, Donna, still undecided about pursuing her desire to be a sister, attended the College of Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas, taught by the Sisters of St. Benedict. In 1959, after her first year of college, Donna made the decision to enter St. Agnes Convent. Even though she missed the wheat fields of Kansas and the life she shared with her family, her call to religious life beckoned her to Wisconsin and CSA.&nbsp; She made her first profession of vows as Sister Philip in the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes on August 15, 1962, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.&nbsp; Sister Donna earned a BS in Elementary Education from Marian College, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, in 1964. Sister taught primary grades in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Kansas for 31 years. She loved teaching and working with children, and they loved her and filled her heart with many happy memories.&nbsp; During her years as an educator, she enriched her teaching and religious education skills with several courses and seminars at Ft. Hays State University, Hays, Kansas and at Silver Lake College, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.&nbsp; In 1993, Sister Donna retired from teaching. After a year of sabbatical in Rock Haven, Missouri, in 1994, she engaged in a variety of ministries including serving on the parish team of Sacred Heart Parish in Colby, Kansas, and cooking for the residents at St. John’s New Horizons Assisted Living, Hays, Kansas. In 1998, Sister Donna returned to Fond du Lac as an assistant to the Local Coordinators for the CSA retirement community at Nazareth Court and Center. She spent countless hours providing for the needs of the sisters, shopping for them, driving, baking, preparing special meals and filling the sisters’ days with her caring and attentive presence and support. In 2018, a serious illness caused Sister Donna to resign her position. Unable to serve the sisters as before, she herself became a resident at Nazareth Court and Center and later at St. Francis Home where she received loving care until the time of her death. Throughout her life, Sister Donna cherished her life in CSA and her Kansas roots. Her love for life, for her CSA sisters, for her family and friends, for the wheat fields, for the smell of the land and for all creation remained strong as did her special hobbies of cooking, baking, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers.&nbsp; Preceding Sister Donna in death were her parents; her brothers Father Andrew Gottschalk, OSB, Vernon, Ivan, Cecil, Philip, Floyd, Stephen; her sister Helen (Ron) Legleiter. Sister is survived by her brothers Donald (Theresa), Leon, Father David, OFM, Cap., Andrew (Lena); her sister Raeann (Charles) Suppes; her sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Cecil) Gottschalk, Nita (Ivan) Gottschalk, Bernadette (Philip) Gottschalk; her devoted nieces and nephews, and the Sisters of St. Agnes with whom she lived, prayed, and ministered.&nbsp; Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM Friday, November 11, 2022, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with Fr. Ike's Virtual Book Club: 'How Ike Led' tonight

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;said Monday he will be making a “big announcement” next week as he teased a third presidential run while campaigning on the eve of the final day of voting in this year's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/2022-midterm-elections?utm_source=apnewsnav&amp;utm_medium=featured">midterm elections</a>.

“I'm going to be making a very big announcement on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Mar-a-Lago," Trump said before a cheering crowd in Vandalia, Ohio, Monday night, where he was holding his final rally of the midterm season to bolster Senate candidate JD Vance.

Trump explained that he wanted “nothing to detract from the importance of tomorrow," even after he had sparked a frantic effort to hold him off after he had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-biden-donald-trump-congress-81685e6030f13360727420eaa1882a02?utm_source=homepage&amp;utm_medium=TopNews&amp;utm_campaign=position_01">told people he was considering</a>&nbsp;officially launching his next campaign Monday night at the rally.

Trump has been increasingly explicit about his plans to seek another term, saying in recent days that he would “very, very, very probably” run again and would be formalizing his intentions “very, very soon."

“I will probably have to do it again but stay tuned,” he said Sunday night in Miami. “Stay tuned to tomorrow night in the great state of Ohio.”

Republican officials and some people in Trump’s orbit had been urging him for months to wait until after the midterms were over to launch, in part to avoid turning the election into a referendum on him and to shield him from potential blame should Republicans not do as well as the party hopes on Tuesday.

But Trump has been eager to move forward, hoping to piggyback off expected Republican wins after endorsing nearly 300 candidates, as well as to stave off potential challengers like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and others who have indicated they will run. Indeed, the date of Trump's announcement — Nov. 15 — is the same day former Vice President Mike Pence will be releasing a book that is seen as part of his own potential campaign rollout.

Trump's announcement comes as he confronts a series of escalating legal challenges, including several investigations that could lead to indictments. They include the probe into hundreds of documents with classified markings that were seized by the FBI from his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, as well as ongoing state and federal inquiries into his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol has also subpoenaed Trump and last month&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-subpoena-jan-6-committee-2d63a2ba74c1874ef6ef0d8ae6d788c1">issued a letter to his lawyers</a>&nbsp;saying he must testify, either at the Capitol or by videoconference, “beginning on or about” Nov. 14 and continuing for multiple days if necessary.

Essays by 35 Salina and Saline County residents and 24 brief vignettes from other residents are featured in a new book published by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

Many and Varied Paths: Real-Life Stories from the Kansas Plains, a Mennonite Press publication, is the brainchild of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities commissioner Mike Durall who was responding in part to the department’s mission “to change lives and build community.” He asked the contributors to think about a life-changing moment that helped shape who they are today.

“Each day, we encounter friends, family members, colleagues, and strangers as we go about our normal routines. Yet we rarely know what is truly in their hearts and souls,” Durall said.

The stories are a glimpse into the writer’s world.

A special reading of selected essays and a discussion with the authors and editor is planned for 7 p.m. Nov. 16 in the lobby of the Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Avenue.

The contributors come from diverse backgrounds and share personal stories about challenges, triumph, loss, and perseverance. The writing styles each reflect the author’s voice creating an authentic collection of voices from across the region.

Regarding his aspirations as editor of the book Durall offered, “I hope this book will encourage us to look kindly upon one another with compassion and understanding because we are all wayfarers on life’s uncertain journey.”

Private contributions covered the production costs, and city funding was used for editorial expenses. Copies are available at the Salina Public Library and other publicly accessible spaces such as waiting rooms, school libraries, non-profit agencies, and other community venues. The books are also for sale at the Smoky Hill Museum Store.

RENO COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities arrested a Kansas felon who injured an officer while resisting on Sunday in Hutchinson.

Just after 4p.m., officers were sent to the 300 block of East 8th Street just&nbsp; for a loud music complaint.&nbsp; Gary McQueen, 45, was acting disorderly and so officers attempted to arrest him. McQueen resisted and one of the responding officers was injured.

EMS transported the officer&nbsp; to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment and he was released.

McQueen was booked on requested charges of Aggravated Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer and Interference with Law Enforcement. He has a previous conviction for driving while habitual violator, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Derrick Henry was rumbling his way through the Kansas City Chiefs defense, and through the Titans history books, during a first half that went exactly the way Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel dreamed it would Sunday night.

The second half was more like a nightmare.

After he had run for nearly 100 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, the Chiefs sold out to stop him in the second, forcing Titans backup quarterback Malik Willis to beat them instead. And when he struggled to move Tennessee through the air, that gave Kansas City the opening it needed to march downfield for the tying touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs proceeded to win the coin toss in overtime, moved swiftly downfield with the help of a couple of crucial plays, and Harrison Butker's go-ahead field goal proved to be the difference in a heart-stopping 20-17 victory.

The Titans in fact had one last chance after Butker's kick, but things went about as well as they did for Willis throughout the second half. Henry was stuffed on first down, then Willis was sacked on consecutive plays, before his desperation throw on fourth down was batted down to send the Chiefs streaming off the bench in celebration.

Forgotten in the drama of the Chiefs' late comeback was Henry's latest spectacular performance.

After running for 219 yards and two touchdowns last week against Houston, the bruising running back moved past Earl Campbell and into first place in franchise history Sunday night with 74 career touchdown runs.

Henry also became the fifth running back since 1950 to have at least 17 games with 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns in their first seven seasons. The others to do it happen to be good company: Hall of Famers LaDainian Tomlinson, Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith and former MVP Shaun Alexander.

The problem on Sunday night was Henry didn't have any help.

After missing last week's game against the Texans, quarterback Ryan Tannehill was limited by his sore ankle Wednesday and Friday while missing Thursday's workout entirely. He tried to warm up before Sunday night's game, but it was clear by the way he was unwilling to put any pressure on the offending ankle that he wouldn't be able to go.

Willis got the nod for the second straight week. And it wasn't a whole lot better than his first career start.

He made a couple of nice throws early in the game, but when the Chiefs made the Titans one-dimensional in the second half, he failed to produce. Willis finished just 5 of 16 for 80 yards while adding 80 yards on the ground.

Henry keeps rewriting Titans history in loss to Kansas City

A “stars” studded summer and fall has proponents of the Choose Saline County rewards program eager to share its virtues entering holiday shopping.

The local loyalty enhancement uses federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, awarding Saline Stars to consumers for their patronage of participating businesses in Saline County. In return, they can spend their stars at locally-owned businesses.

“It’s like free money,” said Pam Welsh at Blushe Boutique, a women’s fashion store at 128 S. Santa Fe in downtown Salina. She co-owns the store with her daughter McKenzie Srna.

Launched in April, Choose Saline County has been doubling monthly, in terms of participation and dollars generated, said Phillip Smith-Hanes, Saline County administrator.

“It seems to be doing really well,” he said.

As of Nov. 1 there were 27,923.12 stars awarded after purchases of goods and services in the county, said Ector Diaz, marketing and content coordinator at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce. He has been helping Saline County promote and administer the program.

The program is open to any person who signs up and shops at registered businesses in Saline County. Some categories on the app offer rewards of 10 percent, 15 percent and 20 percent back in stars, he said. Varying percentages is an effort to drive consumers to businesses that don’t have as much demand.

On Black Friday weekend, Nov. 25 through 28, one-third of purchase prices will be returned to consumers as stars, until they reach their limit. Each user has a limit to the amount of stars they can earn for each category.

“This is done to keep the distribution of stars fair and even,” Diaz said.

Check the app for a list of 274 earners, businesses that award stars, and redeemers, the 28 businesses that both award and allow consumers to spend their stars.

Anyone can download the Choose Saline County application on smartphones or other devices, pairing it with a debit or credit card.

Each redeemed star fetches you a dollar that can be used to buy goods and services from participating merchants. Linking a card wins you 15 free stars, and referring a friend using a referral code will result in 10 stars.

“Businesses win, too. They get paid at the end of each month and there is an added bonus at the end of the year,” Diaz said. “In October, businesses received an extra 75 percent back from the stars redeemed; 50 percent in November, and an extra 25 percent in December.”

For example, if $1,000 in stars were redeemed in October, the participating business was paid $1,750 from the program; $1,500 this month, and if the same is received in December, the total is $1,250, he said.

“It was like a no-brainer for us to sign up for this, as it’s not costing us anything. It’s totally positive for us,” Pam Welsh said.

Merchant incentives in 2023 have yet to be discussed, Diaz said.

“On our side, (the chamber of commerce), we are promoting local business, keeping economy within Salina and Saline County, and making sure that money circulates within us,” Diaz said, “instead of some corporate entity that doesn’t even live here.”

While numbers are growing, there are concerns, among them a relatively low number of businesses where consumers can redeem stars for purchases, according to Diaz.

“That’s part of the reason I was hired, to get those redeeming business numbers up, and we have been adding new businesses recently to that list,” he said.

Stars was an easy decision to Daniel Pilkington, owner of Brown’s Shoe Fit,&nbsp;2150 Planet Avenue, in&nbsp;south Salina.

“We allow customers to get credit when buying products and when they redeem (stars) to buy products,” he said.

In October alone, Brown’s Shoe Fit redeemed more than $1,000 from shoppers “tendering” their stars.

“We’ve seen really good results from it,” Pilkington said. “We’ve got people coming in who normally wouldn’t be able to afford good quality shoes, or not as often, for work, exercise, kids’ shoes, to help out the whole family. They’re spending money around town, and buying shoes sooner than normal. They say ‘Oh I’ve got free money on my app. Let’s go.’ ”

Choose Saline County has attracted shoppers to Brown’s Shoe Fit, he said, which also adds to sales. The store is Choose Saline County’s top redeeming business. The top earner business is Cave Divers Liquor, 2745 Belmont Boulevard in south Salina.

Choose Saline County costs businesses nothing, Blushe Boutique’s Welsh said, and can only boost their bottom lines.

“If someone is earning stars when they go get a smoothie, when they come in here, it’s like an extra bonus. It’s totally a positive for us,” she said. “There are a lot of people out there who still don’t even know about it. Continuing to educate the consumers will help even more.”

Welsh plans to use social media “to let people know they can get the app, earn some stars and spend stars here.”

Having already noticed the benefits, she excited about the holiday shopping season that just started.

“I would say the biggest help has been exposure,” said Pilkington of Brown’s Shoe Fit. “People see they can redeem stars here. They come in and say ‘Oh, we never really knew you were here.' They want to use their credit, and everybody needs shoes.”

Reaction from local traders has been good, said Leslie Bishop, executive director of Salina Downtown Inc.

“The stores downtown that participate have really liked it. I’ve heard two owners refer to it as ‘free money,’ ” she said. “It encourages visitors and people who live local to shop local. It’s important.”

For every dollar spent in Salina, 80 cents stays in town.

“You’re gonna buy from other local merchants, support youth groups, and put that money back into the community,” Bishop said.

As a consumer, she “has collected a fair amount of stars,” and has enjoyed cashing them in.

“I have purchased a few stocking stuffers at Flipping Fabulous (104 N. Santa Fe, Suite A). I went to Apron Strings (143B S. Santa Fe) and was able to get six pots and pans for a total of 18 dollars with my stars. Without them, my pots and pans would have been $300,” Bishop said. “I go with a group of women from our Leadership Salina class, to Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House (135 N. Santa Fe). Using my stars doesn’t make me feel so guilty buying a $6 coffee.”

Spreading the word, and watching the reaction, has also been fun for her.

“I have given talks to three local women’s groups. When I brought up Choose Salina, 50 percent of the women whipped out their phones and signed up,” Bishop said. “I earned stars for giving them the promo code.”

Kayla Stone, a sales associate at Blushe Boutique, uses the Choose Saline County app to help herself and her employer.

“I honestly just use it here at work because I love the clothes, but I seek out local places to earn the stars to use here,” she said.

The program is still in somewhat of a fledgling stage, and there are some kinks to work out. While there are restaurants on the earners list, none have signed up as redeemers.

“Part of my efforts are to reach out to restaurants. I’m going through to see which ones are earning the most stars for consumers,” Diaz said. “The biggest issues we see are restaurants have so many servers that use the POS (point of sale) systems, and they have to be trained. We have restaurants willing. They just have to find the time to train all of the employees.”

Not all stores have the same equipment, Diaz said, and some require more steps to accomplish the task.

A special payment tab was added to Blushe Boutique’s POS system, at no cost to the business, Welsh said.

“It’s very easy to add it in. If someone’s paying that way, they just show it went through on their phone. We touch that button and it gives us credit for the sale,” she said.

Hopes are rising that Choose Saline County will become a staple program, Smith-Hanes said, if it generates enough sales tax revenue to continue funding it once the ARPA money is exhausted.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after&nbsp;

Just after 4a.m. Thursday, the Shawnee County&nbsp;Emergency Communication Center&nbsp;received a 911 call of an unknown person with a flashlight had been near the caller’s barn in the 10000 block of SW Auburn Road, according to a media release.

When deputies arrived, they found a man later identified as 26-year-old Jonathan D. Veach of Topeka hiding under an ATV in the caller’s barn. He was wielding a sword.&nbsp;

After Veach refused to comply with commands, deputies seized the sword and attempted to arrest him. However, he continued to ignore commands and a taser was used to safely arrest him, according to the release.

Veach was booked into the&nbsp;Shawnee Co. Dept. of Corrections&nbsp;on requested charges of criminal trespass and interference with law enforcement.

The first Salina Crossroads Marathon, Half Marathon, Family Fun Run/Walk, and Team Relays is in the books and it was a success!

The qualifier for the Boston Marathon had 817 runners from 30 states registered.

“We had an amazing event this year and we are looking forward to continuing to grow the Salina Crossroads Marathon into one of the premier running events in Kansas," said Daniel Craig, co-race director.

The inaugural event got off to a chilly start in downtown Salina, with temperatures in the upper 30s.

At 7:55 a.m., an electric guitar performance of the National Anthem by Howard Mahan opened the festivities. At 8 a.m., the marathon, half marathon, and team relay runners were off, with the 4.01K Family Fun Run/Walk participants joining in at 8:10 a.m.

Following are the winners, as announced by the Salina Crossroads organizers.

Kory Cool from Manhattan was the winner of the men’s marathon in a time of 2:38:39.

Christina Marin from Norwood, Mass., won the women’s marathon in 3:17:35.

Multiple time Olympic Trials Qualifier Joe Moore won the men's half marathon with a time of 1:10:30.

Tamra Thompson from won the women’s half marathon in 1:32:21.

The Salina Running Club was the winner of the marathon relay.

3 Eagles from Silver Lake won the half marathon team relay.

Liam Young from Salina won the men’s 4.01K in 13:04

Regan Duran from Salina won the women’s 4.01K in 16:00.

More than 125 volunteers helped at registration, handed out water, Gatorade, and nutrition at aid stations, and served as course monitors.

“The volunteers did an amazing job. We received many great complements from runners on how smoothly the race went," Craig said.

WICHITA – With the end of Daylight Saving Time Sunday, Kansas motorists need to prepare for related changes during their commutes. AAA warns motorists to be prepared for sun glare during their morning commute and for earlier darkness and reduced visibility on the road during their evening commute.

“Ninety percent of drivers’ reaction time is dependent upon their vision,&nbsp;which is severely limited at night,” said AAA Kansas spokesman Shawn Steward. “Motorists should focus on night driving safety measures the moment the sun sets. It’s one of the most challenging times to drive because motorist’s eyes are frequently adjusting to the increasing darkness.”

AAA recommends wearing&nbsp;high-quality sunglasses and adjusting the car’s sun visors as needed. Late afternoon driving also presents a similar glare problem, so drivers should take the same precautions. Use of the night setting on rearview mirrors can reduce glare from headlights approaching from the rear.

The time change can&nbsp;disturbed sleep patterns, and when combined with the earlier dusk and darkness during the evening commute, become a formula for drowsy driving and fatigue-related crashes.

Sleep-deprived drivers cause traffic crashes that can lead to death and debilitating injuries on American roadways each year.&nbsp;Research by the AAA Foundation estimates that drowsy driving is a factor in an average of 328,000 crashes annually, including 109,000 crashes that result in injuries and 6,400 fatal crashes.

“While many will enjoy an extra hour of sleep this weekend, few commuters and motorists realize the added dangers that can come as the result of a time change – especially when they are behind the wheel,” continued AAA Kansas’ Steward. “Although we gain an hour of sleep, our sleep patterns are disrupted. This can result in drowsy driving episodes and it is unsafe to drive when we are feeling sleepy.”

Symptoms of drowsy driving can include having trouble keeping eyes open, drifting from lanes or not remembering the last few miles driven. However, more than half of drivers involved in fatigue-related crashes experienced no symptoms before falling asleep behind the wheel.

November and December are among the most dangerous months of the year for motor vehicle collisions with animals. A collision with a deer or other animal can put a serious dent in your vehicle, if not destroy it completely, and could result in serious injuries or fatalities.AAA tips for drivers:●Get plenty of rest before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.&nbsp;If you do begin to feel drowsy while driving, pull over immediately and rest or call a family members, friend or 911 for assistance.●Reduce speed and increase following distances. Turn on your headlights to become more visible during early morning and evening hours.●Keep vehicle headlights and windows (inside and out) clean.●Do not use high beams when other cars or pedestrians are around.●Yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks and do not pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks.AAA tips for pedestrians and bicyclists:●Cross only at intersections. Look left, right and left again and only cross when it is clear. Do not jaywalk.●Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks. If you have to walk on a road that does not have sidewalks, walk facing traffic.●Evaluate the distance and speed of oncoming traffic before you step out into the street.●Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking or biking near traffic at night. Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark.●Avoid distracted walking. This includes looking at your phone or listening to music. If you must listen to music, make sure it is at a low volume so you can hear danger approaching.●Bicycle lights are a ‘must have’ item for safe night riding, especially during the winter months when it gets dark earlier.AAA tips to help prevent a crash or to reduce damage from an animal collision:●Pay attention to road signs.&nbsp;Yellow, diamond-shaped signs with an image of a deer indicate areas with high levels of deer activity.●Keep your eyes moving back and forth.&nbsp;Continuously sweep your eyes across the road in front of you for signs of animals and movement. Animals may also be alongside the road, so make sure to look to the right and left, as well. While the most likely crash is you hitting an animal, on occasion they might also hit you by running into the side of your car.●Be especially attentive in early morning and evening hours.&nbsp;Many animals, especially deer, are most active from 5-8 a.m. and 5-8 p.m. – prime commuting times for many people.●Use high beams when there’s no oncoming traffic.&nbsp;You can spot animals sooner. Sometimes the light reflecting off their eyes will reveal their location.●Slow down, and watch for other deer to appear.&nbsp;Deer rarely travel alone, so if you see one, there are likely to be more nearby.●Slow down around curves.&nbsp;It’s harder to spot animals when going around curves.●One long blast.&nbsp;A long blast on your horn may frighten animals away from your vehicle.●Resist the urge to swerve: Instead, stay in your lane with both hands firmly on the wheel.&nbsp;Swerving away from animals can confuse them so they don’t know which way to run. It can also put you in the path of oncoming vehicles or cause you to crash into something like a lamppost or a tree.●If the crash is imminent take your foot off the brake:&nbsp;during hard braking the front end of your vehicle is pulled downward which can cause the animal to travel up over the hood towards your windshield.
