SEDGWICK COUNTY— Wichita Police K9 Major and his handler Officer Kevin Dykstra assisted U.S. Marshals this week in apprehending a violent and dangerous fugitive from Texas who was staying in a Wichita hotel, according to a media release from police.
U.S. Marshal's requested Dykstra and K9 Major assist with apprehending 48-year-old Demetrius T. Carter of Lancaster, TX. Demetrius was wanted on an outstanding Texas warrant for Aggravated Assault.
He was also found to have a Sedgwick County Warrant for distribution of cocaine in addition to an extensive criminal history in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas involving robbery, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and multiple firearm offenses.
Officers located Carter at a hotel in the 300 block of S. Webb in Wichita and attempted to take him into custody. After seeing the officers, Carter tried to run back into his hotel room but was quickly apprehended by K9 Major.
EMS transported Carter to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries prior to being booked into the Sedgwick County Jail for his outstanding warrants. Officers also located an AR-style rifle inside his hotel room, which he is prohibited from carrying due to his status as a convicted felon.
