Charles Roscoe “Charlie” Townsend, 92, died Sunday, September 25, 2022 in Wichita, Kansas. He was born March 25, 1930 in Grinnell, Kansas to John “Matt” and Apalona “Lona” (Fischer) Townsend.
He married Lorene Boden in Downs, Kansas and together they created a beautiful life and family. The love of their lives were their three children, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Charles worked for the City of Beloit before retiring in 1995.
A lifelong learner, Charles was interested in everything from history and geography, to science and philosophy, his inquisitive mind knew no bounds. An avid reader, he always had a book in his hand. It could be a classic novel, a western, a collection of poetry, or any source that could add to his wealth of knowledge.
Charles loved the outdoors and saw beauty all around. Gardening was a passion, and tending to his vegetables and flowers brought him great joy. Other hobbies included woodworking, solving crossword puzzles, and watching Jeopardy every day.
Charles loved people and could carry on a conversation with anyone. His wonderful sense of humor and witty personality brought a smile to all.
Survivors include his wife Lorene of Beloit; son Steve (Susan) Townsend of Cheney, Kansas; daughters Jane Cale of St. Charles, Missouri and Judy (Dennis) Sander of Liberal, Kansas; his six grandchildren, Jason (Mariah) Townsend, Matt Townsend, Jared Cale, Jami (Aaron) Defenbaugh, Melissa (Sandon) Hilditch, and Madelyn Sander; nine great-grandchildren; and his sister Marie (Dale) Suter of Oakley, Kansas.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bob (Ruth) and Bill (Veda) Townsend, and son-in-law James Cale.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, September 30, at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday and visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the rosary service begins at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
