A group of Salina South High School students can now say they are published poets.

Nineteen South students had works published in A Celebration of Poets, 2022. Those published poets include the following.

“I value the diverse and engaging content that we look at throughout the year, as well as the various themes and genres we explore,” said Addison Frederking, a sophomore whose work was published. “I think that it really helps kids find what they enjoy in a book or poem.”

Jeri Clouston was the students' Advanced English 1 teacher who incorporated the poetry contest into her lesson plans, according to information from USD 305.

“It was a special opportunity for our students to use what they learned about poems and poetry terms,” said Clouston. “Their final activity for the unit was to write their own poems from a variety of poetry choices.” 

The Creative Communication publishing company accepted 19 for publication. As a result of the students being published, South High was recognized with a Poetic Achievement Award. The award recognizes schools with excellent English Language Arts programs and have more than 50 percent of their total entries accepted for publication, USD 305 noted.

Author Debra Anne Stenstrom will be in the Salina Public Library on Saturday to sign her children's book, It's Okay to Be Different.

The event is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Saturday in the library, 301 W. Elm Street.

Published in November of 2022, It’s Okay to Be Different shares the story of a special needs puppy named Dumplin who was rescued and loved for 10 years. Crippled at birth, Dumplin’s story shows how she was able to overcome obstacles and make the best out of life. With themes of compassion and unconditional love, this book is sure to touch the hearts of its readers, the library noted in a news release.

Debra Anne Stenstrom lived in the Kansas City area for 36 years. After graduating high school in Spring Hill, Kan., in 1975, she studied hospitality management for two years at Johnson County Community College in 1990. She has always had a love for animals, so in 1992, she began working at a Lenexa animal clinic. She went on to become a professional groomer which she continued for nearly 27 years. Currently, she operates a small animal hospital in Junction City with her husband. Her two children and three grandsons also live in Kansas.

MORRIS COUNT —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 5:30p.m. April 4, police stopped a vehicle in the 600 block of W. Main St.&nbsp; in Council Grove for for an alleged traffic violation.

During the stop, the&nbsp;Morris Co. Sheriff’s Office’s&nbsp;K-9 Kimber was deployed and alerted to illegal drugs in the vehicle.

Following a probable cause search, deputies arrested the driver, 61-year-old Scott Berry of Council Grove, and a passenger identified as 24-year-old Wolphen Smith of Latimer.

Both were booked on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Michael D. Scheibler, 61, Minneapolis, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2023, at his home with his family by his side. He was born May 15, 1961, in Salina to Richard D. and Alta A. (Abrams) Scheibler.

He moved to Bennington when he was six months old and remained a lifelong Ottawa County resident. He was a 1979 graduate of Bennington High School and he then worked as a millwright for over 45 years. Michael enjoyed traveling, working with his hands, a good book, and his grandchildren. He was a “fix it guy” and there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard, whom he loved dearly.

Survivors are his wife Debra Scheibler; mother Alta Scheibler; daughters Rien (Jim) and Rilee; stepsons Willie and Thomas; brothers Steven (Joyce), Donald (Cristi), and David (Erica); seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 11 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Wilson Family Funeral Home, 405 Argyle Ave., Minneapolis, KS 67467, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 12 at Bennington Cemetery. If you have a doo rag, the family encourages you to wear it.

&nbsp;BARTON COUNTY —William Thomas Frederick Jr., 38, is wanted for attempted 2nd degree murder of a police officer, which occurred in Hoisington on April 1, 2023, according to Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir. The Barton County District Court issued a warrant for Frederick on the charge. Frederick is to be considered armed and dangerous.&nbsp; If anyone has any information on Frederick’s whereabouts, please call 911 or Crimestoppers at 620-792-1300 or P3Tips.com.

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating an alleged aggravated assault on a police officer in Hoisington and asking the pubic for help finding&nbsp; 38-year-old William Thomas Frederick Jr.&nbsp;

Just before 2:30a.m. April 1, a Hoisington police officer was investigating a suspicious vehicle near a business in&nbsp; Hoisington, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, at which point it fled eastbound on Kansas 4 Highway at a high rate of speed. 

During the pursuit, the Hoisington officer reported on the radio he heard a backfire or gunshot. His vehicle then began to overheat and was disabled. It was later discovered a bullet had struck the radiator in the patrol car.

By this time, a Barton County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. had caught up to the chase and continued pursuit. The suspect vehicle continued east on Kansas 4 Highway, entering the City of Claflin turning onto city streets when it crashed into a utility box and the vehicle was disabled. 

Review of the dash camera in the Sheriff’s Office vehicle indicates a suspect fired at least three shots while the Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit. Sheriff’s deputies captured two of the three occupants of the vehicle at the scene.

The driver was identified as Rylan J. Witmer, age 21 of Wilson and is being held on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, felony attempt to flee and elude and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Witmer was booked in the Barton County Jail and released&nbsp; Monday on a $10,000 bond.

A passenger in the vehicle identified as Frederick Jr., fled from the scene and is believed to be the shooter. Frederick's last known address was in the Salina area. He may also be in Ellsworth or Rice counties.

Law Enforcement agencies including the United States Marshals Service are currently seeking the whereabouts of Frederick. He is wanted for questioning in reference to attempted murder on the Hoisington officer and aggravated assault of law enforcement officer regarding the deputies. 

Frederick was on Community Corrections and listed as an absconder at the time of the incident. Frederick is described as a white male, medium build, 5-foot -6, 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

After the chase, a vehicle was stolen in the Claflin area. It is believed Frederick may be driving a 2015 Toyota RAV4 bearing Kansas tag 602 CVU, bronze in color.

William A. “Bill” Davidson, son of Paul Calvin Davidson and Mildred Irene (Hoffman) Davidson, was born on March 26, 1946 in Concordia, Ks. He passed away March 24, 2023 at Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems in Beloit, KS at the age of 76 years.

On July 14, 1982, he was united in marriage to Rebecca S. Buethe at the Christian Church in Glasco, KS and Paul, Kristi, Chris and Melissa came to bless this home.

Bill was a decorated veteran of the United States Army.&nbsp; He was a lifelong rancher. He worked for Solomon Valley Feeders for most of his adult life, in different managerial positions.&nbsp; He retired from there in 2013.&nbsp; After several years taking care of his own cattle, Bill and Becky retired completely and moved to Scandia, Ks where they enjoyed the simple life and spending time with family. Their greatest adventures were many trips to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with their special companions, Bud and Abby.

Bill was preceded in death, by his parents Paul and Mildred Davidson; his wife Rebecca Davidson; son Paul Davidson.

He is survived by two daughters, Kristi (Errick) Clark of Beloit, KS; Melissa (Jeremy) Miller of Courtland, KS; son Chris (Angie) Stout of Bentonville, AR; special daughter Ashley Adolf, Topeka, KS; 13 grandchildren, Preston, Tanner, Laura, Brady, Zach, Colton, Sadie, Gage, Addyson, Hayden, Chase, Riley, Ryker, Haley; great-grandson Weston; brother Homer (Barbara) Davidson of Smithville, MO; many other family members and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Scandia, KS with Pastor Sandra Jellison-Knock, officiating. A graveside burial will follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Glasco Cemetery in Glasco, KS.

The 39th Salina Spring Poetry Series continues on Tuesday with a reading by Gary Jackson.

The reading will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 135 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Admission will be $5 at the door and free for students with ID.

Huascar Medina, Kansas Poet Laureate Emeritus, curated this year’s series. Medina selected poets with a broad range of perspectives who will share their work in Salina this April.

“Gary Jackson's latest collection, Origin Story, is a must-read. I cannot sing its praises enough. His work is heartfelt and imaginative. Gary's capacity to make the intimate accessible is something to aspire to and admire. When I read Missing You, Metropolis, I realized poetry and pop culture could inhabit the same page without losing sincerity. It opened possibilities for me as a poet,” said Medina.

Born and raised in Topeka, Jackson is the author of the poetry collections Origin Story (University of New Mexico Press, 2021) and Missing You, Metropolis (Graywolf Press, 2010), which received the 2009 Cave Canem Poetry Prize. He’s also the co-editor of The Future of Black: Afrofuturism, Black Comics, and Superhero Poetry (Blair Publishing, 2021). His poems have appeared in numerous journals including Callaloo, The Sun, Los Angeles Review of Books, and Copper Nickel. He’s received fellowships and residencies from Cave Canem, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and Art Omi. He’s published work in Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology and was featured in the 2013 New American Poetry Series by the Poetry Society of America. He’s an associate professor in English and creative writing at the College of Charleston where he’s currently the director of undergraduate creative writing and teaches in the MFA program and serves as the Poetry editor of Swamp Pink.
