Murder suspect accused of violent attack on inmate at Kan. jail

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent altercation that injured an inmate at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.

Just after 9a.m. Friday, an inmate assaulted another inmate with a makeshift weapon, in a housing unit of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility, according to Sheriff Jeff Easter. Jail staff recovered the makeshift weapon 

EMS transported the victim to a local area hospital for treatment and he was released back to the Detention Facility. The Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division processed the scene.

The victim in this incident is a 37-year-old black male from Wichita. He has been in custody since November 3, 2022, booked on theft and possession w/ intent to use drug paraphernalia.

The suspect in this incident is a 41-year-old black male from Wichita. He has been in custody since January 13, 2021, booked on two counts of 1st Degree Murder.

This is the only inmate-on-inmate improvised weapon assault of 2023 for the Sedgwick County Detention Facility. The motive for the assault is unknown. It is unknown at this time if the incident was gang-related.

 This incident is under investigation for criminal conduct as well as a review of the circumstances surrounding the manufacturing of the improvised cutting device. The sheriff's office did not release the name's of the inmates involved.
