JOHNSON COUNTY —A member of the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff made a court appearance Thursday afternoon for alleged domestic battery, according to online jail records.

Just before 9p.m. on Wednesday, police in Overland Park arrested 54-year-old David Lee Merritt Sr. on requested charges of misdemeanor domestic battery.  He was booked into jail at 10:12p.m. Wednesday.

The Chiefs said they were aware of the arrest but had no comment.

Merritt was released from custody after meeting the requirement of a $2,500 personal recognizance bond. He is scheduled to return to court June 24.

Saline County Jail Bookings, April 23

One teen was hospitalized and another injured, after a Salina South High School parking lot fight.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on April 22 at around 9:00 am, a witness reported about a fight that occurred in the parking lot of South High School, involving multiple people.&nbsp; 

Reportedly, two male students a 17-year-old and 15-year-old were arriving at the school when a vehicle occupied with four people arrived in the parking lot and approached the two. 

A fight then ensued, before the 4 individuals entered back into their vehicle and fled the area. 

Those four people were identified as juveniles from another school, according to SPD. 

SPD confirmed the 17-year-old male suffered injuries to his face area and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, where he received treatment. The 15-year-old male suffered minor injuries and did not seek medical attention. 

During this ongoing investigation, two of the four suspects from the vehicle were located in north Salina and taken into custody by officers at about 10:30 am that same day. 

Arrested was two males, (15 &amp; 16) and both were charged with 2 requested charges of Aggravated Battery.

They were booked into the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City.

Like the broader stock market, GE Vernova is benefiting from the rise of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/artificial-intelligence">artificial-intelligence technology</a>, and its electrification business booked more equipment orders for data centers during the quarter, $2.4 billion, than it did during all of last year. The company also raised its forecasts for revenue and other financial measures over the full year.

The vast majority of companies in the S&amp;P 500 have so far been delivering results for the start of 2026 that have topped analysts’ expectations, even with the war in Iran&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/britain-economy-inflation-iran-oil-440ff829ff37e2f77938a5f69625cc83">driving up oil prices</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-war-oil-consumer-products-petroleum-cdbcc14cca17d7db49b34e016adebac1">uncertainty for the global economy</a>. A day earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/iran">extended a ceasefire</a>&nbsp;but also said he was maintaining an American blockade of Iranian ports. The blockade keeps Iran from making money by selling its own crude oil.

The standoff over Iran’s closure of the strait and the U.S. blockade raised doubts about when or if talks would resume to end the crisis.

Brent crude has shot up from roughly $70 per barrel since before the war on worries about a long-term disruption to the flow of oil. But moves in both the oil and stock markets have become more modest in recent weeks, following vicious swings where Brent’s price briefly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-oil-iran-trump-1abeddf7c4bf19d1dc96b3f23c1de402">topped $119</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stock-markets-war-oil-trump-iran-1aef947ecb395c3bb97fcdb5ed3826f1">S&amp;P 500 dropped nearly 10%</a>&nbsp;below its prior all-time high.

Tilray Brands jumped 14.2%, and Canopy Growth soared 20.2%.

All told, the S&amp;P 500 rose 73.89 points to 7,137.90. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 340.65 to 49,490.03, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 397.60 to 24,657.57.

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A Kansas has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder after 25-year-old Ivy Unruh died from injuries she suffered in a shooting at an apartment complex.

Just after 8 a.m. April 17, police were dispatched to a reported shooting at 7272 E. 37th Street in Wichita, according to a media release. When officers arrived, they found Unruh near Building 5 with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Officers also recovered a firearm at the scene.

Unruh was taken to a local hospital in grave condition.

Joshua Orlando, 29, who was married to but separated from the victim, was taken into custody at the scene. He was transported to the Wichita Police Investigations Bureau for an interview and later booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on a charge of aggravated battery.

Following her death, Orlando was rebooked Monday night. The case was presented for formal charges to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office Tuesday morning and he was charged with premeditated first-degree murder and remains in custody.

It has long been quoted and promoted by those who believe America was founded as a Christian nation and should be one. It’s from the seventh chapter of 2 Chronicles, a book in the Hebrew (Old Testament) portion of the Bible.

The 14th verse — the one most often quoted — says:

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Trump is among hundreds who are taking turns reading the entire Bible aloud over the course of a week. Most of the readings are taking place at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, though Trump’s is coming by video from the Oval Office.

The Chronicles passage has for decades been a major theme at annual National Day of Prayer events. Organizers of the America Reads the Bible marathon invited Trump to read from it. “It’s a powerful statement that he decided to read that passage,” said Bunni Pounds, founder of Christians Engaged, which organized the project.

The passage has been recited over the decades at countless rallies, services and events, often organized around the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/american-founders-christian-nation-conservative-beliefs-4ea388e8d80c54016a6a4460cbef9b82">disputed belief</a>&nbsp;that America was created as a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/america-christian-united-states-conservative-beliefs-9286431a0ddde91c928e5d411795c1fe">Christian nation</a>&nbsp;and needs to repent of its sins and return to God. The passage has particularly been associated with annual events commemorating the National Day of Prayer, which has taken various forms since the mid-20th century and became fixed by law on the first Thursday in May since the 1980s.

The verse is set in a context far from modern America — during the reign of King Solomon in ancient Israel some 3,000 years ago. Solomon is presiding over the dedication of the first temple in Jerusalem, and in a lengthy prayer he asks for divine mercy if a future generation sins, is punished with military or natural disaster and then repents. In the key passage, God replies with a promise of restoration.

Critics say the passage is used out of context

But the use of the passage in modern settings has its critics.

The Chronicles passage is “a popular verse among Christian nationalists and has been for quite some time,” said Brian Kaylor, a Baptist pastor and president and editor-in-chief of Word&amp;Way, a progressive site covering faith and politics.

He said its use has taken on a partisan and polarizing tone, often used in tandem with a promotion of a belief in a Christian America in an increasingly diverse country.

“This verse is not about the United States,” said Kaylor, author of “The Bible According to Christian Nationalists: Exploiting Scripture for Political Power.” It is “a promise made to one particular person in one particular moment. It doesn’t really work to pull it out of context and apply it to whatever you want to.”

But many have done so recently and in decades past, either saying America has a divinely ordained destiny similar to ancient Israel’s or simply that they believe every nation has a duty to follow God and repent when needed.

President&nbsp;<a href="https://www.inaugural.senate.gov/42nd-inaugural-ceremonies/" target="_blank">Dwight D. Eisenhower</a>&nbsp;took the oath of office in 1953 with his hand on a Bible opened to the 2 Chronicles passage. President Ronald Reagan quoted the passage in a proclamation declaring 1984’s National Day of Prayer. A speaker at the 2024 Republican National Convention also quoted it.

Mike Huckabee, a Baptist pastor and U.S. ambassador to Israel, is reading from a Genesis passage in which God says he will bless those who bless Abraham — a passage popular with many evangelicals who believe they have a biblical mandate to support Israel.

David Barton, whose Wallbuilders promotes belief in America as a Christian nation, will read from a passage that gave his organization its name, in which Nehemiah rebuilds the broken walls of Jerusalem.

🎥President Trump participates in marathon Bible reading

SALINE COUNTY —A Salina man was injured and arrested after an accident just after 10p.m. Tuesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Toyota Avalon driven by&nbsp; Austin P.&nbsp;Houk, 26, Salina, was westbound on West Iron Avenue. As the car came to&nbsp;North 9th Street, the driver attempted to make a left turn to travel&nbsp; southbound on North 9th Street. The driver failed to make a proper left&nbsp; turn and struck the traffic light at the southwest corner of the intersection.

EMS transported Houk to Salina Regional Health Center. A passenger in the car was not injured. Houk was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.&nbsp; Just before 11:30p.m., police booked Houk into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of&nbsp;DUI; 1st conv; incapable of safely driving and Transporting an open container.&nbsp; Just before 3:30a.m. Wednesday, Houk met the requirement for bond and is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

Salina man accused of DUI after car strikes traffic light

EDWARDS COUNTY&nbsp;– Two men have been arrested following an investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and Edwards County Sheriff’s Office connected to a violent assault in December 2025.

On Dec. 8, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office requested the KBI assist with a sexual assault and battery investigation that occurred Dec. 6 and Dec. 7, at a residence in Belpre, Kansas, according to a media release from the KBI.

Following the investigation, the Wichita Police Department assisted by arresting the suspects.

Just before 11a.m. Monday,&nbsp; police arrested 31-year-old Colin M. Welch of Wichita, on requested charges of attempted first-degree murder, rape, aggravated battery and criminal threat. Just before 9a..m. Monday police arrested 54-year-old Jeffrey T. Diederich of Wichita for one count of attempted first-degree murder.

The investigation indicated Welch strangled and raped one adult victim. Diederich is alleged to have been present during the incidents.

Both suspects were booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.&nbsp;

Kansas man accused of violent sex assault 

Ernest (Ernie) Jay Goetz, 66, passed away April 18, 2026.

Ernie was born December 15, 1959 in Salina, Kansas to Donald Goetz and Mary (Bieker) Goetz. He is survived by his two sisters, Barbara Hiner (Cain) of Assaria, and Rita Billips of Hoyt, his brother Joe Goetz of Hoyt, his wife, Michelle of Minneapolis; daughters; grandchildren; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Ernie graduated from Lindsborg High School in 1977 and enlisted in the US Army (active duty) where he learned multiple different operating systems to work on electronic equipment, computers, and radars until 1980 when he transitioned to the US Army Reserves and served until 1983.

In 1983, Ernie earned his Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering from Kansas Technical Institute. Immediately putting his degree to work, he was hired by NCR in Wichita, Kansas, as an Electronic Technician and Failure Analyst until 1989 when he moved to St. Louis, Missouri. In St. Louis, Ernie worked for McDonnell Douglas as a Laser Quality Assurance Technician Until 1993.

In 1993, a career change took Ernie to Norton, Kansas where he was a corrections officer from 1993-1994. In 1994, he returned to St. Louis and took on the roles of Quality Assurance Technician until 1999.

Wanting to be closer to family, Ernie moved back to Salina in 1999 and went to work for Brown &amp; Brown Inc. as an Electronics Technician and Maintenance until 2001 when he went to work for Mid-States Energy Works from 2001-2003.

In 2001, Ernie decided to return to the military and enlisted in the US Army National Guard as Electronics Communications and Repair Technician. The lifelong bachelor met his wife, Michelle, in 2002 and they were married in Minneapolis, Kansas in 2003. In 2005, Ernie officially adopted his two daughters.

While in the US Army National Guard, Ernie worked at MATES on Ft. Riley completing inspection trips, diagnostic processes, installations, and needed repairs on a wide range of electronic equipment from 2003-2015. He was proud to serve his country and deployed with his unit to Iraq from 2009 to 2010.

From 2015-2017, Ernie worked for the United States Postal Service in Minneapolis, Kansas priding himself on speed, accuracy, friendly service, and representing the Postal Service in a positive light.

In 2017, Ernie left the postal service and deployed again with the US Army National Guard. This deployment was to Kuwait from 2017-2018 where he worked on electronics maintenance and repair.

After returning from his Kuwait deployment Ernie decided to retire from the military in 2018. Since his retirement he has had assorted part-time jobs, enjoyed helping his friends and family with projects and events, looked forward to hunting and fishing, hanging out with friends, or just sitting and reading a book.

His final deployment from this earth will be remembered with a Celebration of Life on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home with military honors starting at 4:30. If you’d like to wear your favorite sports team gear or hunting apparel that would be a great tribute.

Saline County Jail Bookings, April 21

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas woman on new allegations after a second arrest this month.

On April 17, sheriff's deputies executed a search warrant at 206 Ohio Avenue in the City of Holton in connection with an ongoing drug investigation, according to&nbsp;Sheriff Tim Morse.

As a result of the search, 61-year-old Lisa Ann Guffey of Holton was arrested at the scene. She was transported to and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was also booked on a Jackson County District Court warrant for possession of oxycodone, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Just after 6p.m. April 4, Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a free air sniff with a K-9 around a Chrysler Sebring that was parked in the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Jail parking lot, according to&nbsp;Sheriff Tim Morse.

The K-9 alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics. Deputies seized illegal drug contraband from the vehicle. The registered owner of the vehicle, Lisa Ann Guffey, 61, of Holton, who came to the jail for visitation purposes, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kan. woman jailed for 2nd time this month on drug allegations

A man is accused for assaulting a female acquaintance in a Salina home.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on April 19 just after 7:00 pm, officers were dispatched to a home in north Salina for the report of a domestic disturbance.

Reportedly a 39-year old female who does not live at the home, but stays there occasionally told SPD that when she arrived, Christopher Hamilton (39) allegedly opened the front door, pushed her and dragged her inside the residence.

The victim ran to a bathroom to get away from Hamilton, but he grabbed her by the hair and slammed her to the ground.

Moreover, the victim told SPD she was choked by Hamilton after she was thrown to the ground.

The victim sustained had minor injuries, and SPD did not determine whether she received medical treatment or not.

Officers arrested Hamilton on the scene and booked him into the Saline County Jail for requested charges of Aggravated Domestic Battery, Kidnapping and Criminal Damage to Property.

Upon arrival, contact was made with a 36-year old female who reported a male acquaintance identified as Matthew Hester (36) allegedly assaulted her.

Both who live at the residence, reportedly got into an argument and Hester struck the victim in the head area, according to SPD.&nbsp;

She then attempted to call 9-1-1, Hester forcibly took her phone, broke it and threw it in a toilet.

Officers arrived and arrested Hester on the scene.

He was booked into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of Robbery, Domestic Battery, Criminal Damage to Property and Criminal Use of a Weapon (officers located brass knuckles in the possession of Hester).

The victim suffered minor injuries and SPD did not confirm if she received medical treatment.

Police: Argument turns violent and results in arrest at north Salina home

Alcohol plays a factor in the arrest of a Colorado man.

According to the Salina Police Department on April 18 at around 9:00 pm, officers were dispatched to 671 Westport in reference to an altercation at the 24/7 Travel Store parking lot.

Upon arrival, a male and female from Larned reported they picked up an acquaintance identified as Michael Mason (57) of Colorado. SPD stated, the couple were giving Mason a ride to Hutchinson, as he was highly intoxicated.

The couple stopped to get gas and Mason was reportedly&nbsp;belligerent. They advised Mason to exit the truck and he then grabbed a 2x4 piece of wood from the bed of the vehicle.

Mason threatened to hit the other male with it, and the female stepped in to prevent the incident from happening. Mason then walked away, but came back and grabbed the woman by her hair and started punching her in the head and torso area.

Afterwards, she fell to the ground where Mason began kicking her.

Officers then arrived to the scene and took Mason into custody, booking him into the Saline County Jail.

He was booked on the requested charges of Aggravated Assault, Battery and Criminal Damage to Property (broke the taillight of the victim's vehicle).

The woman suffered injuries to her face and head area. SPD did not confirm if she received medical treatment.

Saline County Jail Bookings, April 20

Salina law enforcement are investigating a reported assault at a Mexican restaurant drive-thru.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on April 19 at around 1:30 am, officers were dispatched to Salina Regional Health Center for the report of a 16-year old male, who was reportedly assaulted.

Upon arrival, the male told SPD he was in the drive-thru of Pancho's (3029 Riffel Dr), when several individuals approached his vehicle and began striking him. As a result, the 16-year old had injuries to the right side of his forehead.

Reportedly, the victim stated there has been an ongoing issue with him and the individuals who allegedly assaulted him.

Officers had began looking for these certain individuals, but at about 3:00 am that same day, SPD was sent to a home in south Salina.

Upon arrival, officers came in contact with an 18-year old male who stated that about an hour ago, he was driving the suspect's vehicle near Kennedy Park in southwest Salina.&nbsp;SPD determined he was not at the alleged assault scene at Pancho's.

He further stated the individuals (who are acquaintances with the victim), approached and confronted him. The 18-year old indicated several of them were armed and that he was struck with their weapons in the head and face area.

Furthermore, the 18-year old gave a description of individual's vehicle and officers found it driving in northeast Saline County at around 7:30 am the same day.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and came in contact with Jesus Nava (19), who is an acquaintance of the 16-year old male (allegedly assaulted at Pancho's).

Afterwards, officers located a handgun and illegal drugs inside the vehicle, according to SPD. A search warrant of a residence was also conducted in the same area where Nava was stopped, and officers located several other handguns.

Moreover, officers arrested two other juvenile males (17 &amp; 16) who were involved in the incident, allegedly assaulting the 18-year old male near Kennedy Park.

Nava along with the 17 and 16-year old were all placed on requested charges of Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Criminal Damage to Property.

Nava was booked into the Saline County Jail and the 16, 17-year olds were transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City.

More requested charges are pending, along with the search of the other suspects involved in the Pancho's reported assault.
