This storm is particularly dangerous, with wind gusts reaching 80 mph and penny-sized hail. Hazards include wind gusts of 80 mph and penny-sized hail. Radar has indicated these severe conditions. The impacts are expected to be dangerous, with flying debris posing a threat to those without shelter. Mobile homes may be heavily damaged, and considerable damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles is expected. Extensive tree damage and power outages are likely. The locations impacted by this storm include Ellsworth, Wilson, Kanopolis, Lincoln, Sylvan Grove, Beverly, Barnard, Ash Grove, Westfall, and Ellsworth Airport.

The severe thunderstorm watch includes the following counties in Kansas: Clay, Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Geary, Lincoln, Marshall, Mitchell, Morris, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Republic, Riley, Russell, Saline, Wabaunsee, and Washington.

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, with the possibility of damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service urges residents in these areas to remain alert, secure outdoor objects, and seek shelter if necessary.

At 4:37 AM CDT, severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from near Barnard to near Beverly to 5 miles west of Brookville, moving east at 50 mph. These storms are particularly destructive for the areas of Tescott, Minneapolis, Ada, and Wells.

Hazards include wind gusts of 80 mph and penny-sized hail, as indicated by radar. Residents in the affected areas are urged to take immediate action to protect themselves and their property. Seek shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows, and avoid driving during the storm due to the potential for dangerous winds and flying debris.

Kansas Weekly Drought Update and Climate Report for June 26 – July 2, 2024

Temperatures averaged slightly above normal for the week, but there were some very hot temperatures during the period. Highs across the Kansas Mesonet averaged in the 90s on five of the seven days. Highs were above 100 degrees in a few locations on June 28th and again on the first two days of July. The hottest reading for the week was 106° on the 28th, recorded at the Wilson Lake cooperative site in eastern Russell County. There was a brief cooldown on the 30th when the average high was only 78°, nearly 12 degrees below normal for the date. Daily morning lows averaged from 63 to 70 degrees each morning.

The 7-day average temperature across Kansas was 78.7°, or 1.3° above normal. Seven of Kansas’ nine climate divisions were above normal; only northeast was below normal (-1.0°), while east central was exactly normal. West central was the most above normal division (+2.7°), closely followed by southwest (+2.6°) and south central (+2.5°) Kansas. There was an average of 182 growing degree days across the state (based on Kansas Mesonet data) which is 8 above normal. Divisional totals ranged from 169 in northwest to 193 in southeast Kansas, while departures ranged from -1 in northeast to +18 in west central Kansas. For the growing season to date, which began on April 1st, there has been an average of 1604 growing degree days in Kansas, or 139 above normal. Departures for the growing season range from +131 in northwest and north central Kansas to +179 in west central Kansas. There was an average of 39 corn stress degree days during the period across the state. The average since April 1 is 180. Southwest Kansas has the highest average at 249, while northeast Kansas’ average is lowest at 86.

There were multiple heavy rain events during the period, but for the most part, the coverage of these events was limited. At least one CoCoRaHS observer reported two inches or more of rain on six out of the seven days of the period; all reports on the 27th were just six-tenths of an inch or less. On the 26th, heavy rain reports were confined to areas along the Missouri border. The highest totals were in Doniphan County where all six CoCoRaHS reports received were over two inches, with a 3.25” amount near Bendena the highest. Barber County picked up from 2 to 3 inches on the 28th. The highest total was 3.35” west-southwest of Medicine Lodge. An intense thunderstorm on the evening of the 28th dropped as much as six inches of rain in Geary County, leading to street flooding in Junction City. Hail as large as golf balls accompanied the torrential rain. Parts of southwest Kansas were inundated on the 30th. The 4.39” which fell at Dodge City was the fifth-highest single-day total in 150 years of records at that site. This boosted the monthly total at Dodge City to 12.02”, setting a new mark for the wettest June on record. An observer in southeastern Ford County picked up 6.25” of rain from the same system. In addition, there were reports of over 4 inches of rain from CoCoRaHS observers in Clark, Kiowa, Comanche, Pratt, and Cowley Counties. On the 1st, heavy rain fell along a line from Manhattan to Olathe. Johnson County had the highest totals, with eleven CoCoRaHS reports of at least four inches of rain, with four of those reports exceeding five inches. Lower totals fell further west; reports were generally from two to three inches in the Lawrence and Topeka areas. Seven-day totals of at least five inches of rain were reported in fourteen different counties in the state, with the highest amount 7.35” in Grandview Plaza in Geary County. Severe weather accompanied the heavy rain in some areas. There were two tornadoes during the period on June 28th in Lyon and Osage Counties. There were no reports of damage from either tornado. There were 77 reports of severe wind gusts 58 mph or higher. Of these, 12 reports were of winds at or above hurricane force (74 mph). The peak gusts were 86 mph in Shawnee County on the 26th and in Thomas County on the 1st. There were eleven reports of severe hail 1” or greater in diameter during the period. The largest report was 2.75” in Cowley County northeast of Winfield on the 29th.

The statewide average precipitation for the 7-day period was 1.56”, or 170% of the weekly normal amount of 0.92”. The highest divisional total was 2.64” in northeast Kansas, narrowly beating out east central Kansas at 2.63”. Only two divisions were below normal; central Kansas was the driest division (0.33”) followed by north central (0.64”) Kansas. Since April 1st, the average precipitation across Kansas is 11.35”, or 95% of the normal amount of 11.95”. The three eastern divisions remain above normal, and southwest Kansas is now above normal (103%). Northeast Kansas remains the most above normal division (+3.54”), while central Kansas is still the most below normal (-3.06”). Since January 1st, the average statewide precipitation is 14.62”. This amount is 93% of normal, or a departure of –1.08”. The three eastern divisions are the only three divisions above normal for the year. Central Kansas has the lowest percent of normal (76%). Departures for the year to date range from -3.65” in central Kansas to +3.04” in northeast Kansas.

The average evapotranspiration for grass across the state (based on Kansas Mesonet data) for the week was 1.57”. This is close to the 10-year normal (2014 to 2023) of 1.59” for the 7-day period. Divisional averages ranged from 1.30” in northeast to 1.81” in west central Kansas. The statewide average 2” soil temperature across the Kansas Mesonet for the period was 79.7°, or 1.5° above normal.

In this week’s US Drought Monitor update, one-category improvements were made to parts of 30 counties in southern Kansas, as well as to six counties near and to the south of Kansas City. There were a few small areas with 1-category degradation in northwest, north central, and southeast Kansas. The statewide Drought Severity and Coverage Index (DSCI) fell 15 points to 80. This is the lowest DSCI since December 14, 2021. A total of 45% of the state is now drought-free, up from 39% last week. The percentage of Kansas in D2 or worse drought status is down to only 4 percent. The last time there were no areas of D2 or worse drought in Kansas was nearly three years ago on July 27, 2021.

The Weather Prediction Center’s 7-day precipitation forecast, valid for the period July 3rd through the 9th, calls for near or above normal precipitation for the eastern two-thirds of Kansas, with below normal precipitation favored in the western third of the state. A few areas in central and southeast Kansas may pick up over two inches of rain, but totals from 1.5 to 2 inches are more likely. Temperatures during the period are expected to average slightly below normal. The average daily high and low across Kansas for this period are 91° and 66°. Average 7-day precipitation is 0.70” in western Kansas, 0.88” in central Kansas, and 1.03” in eastern Kansas. The 8 to 14-day outlook, valid for the period July 10th through the 16th, favors above normal temperatures statewide, with the highest probabilities in northwestern Kansas. Below normal precipitation is favored in northwest and north central Kansas, with a small area of elevated chances of above normal precipitation along the Oklahoma border. Looking even further ahead, the outlook for the 14-day period from July 13th to July 26th suggests above normal temperatures are likely. Below normal precipitation in most of the state.

For the growing season to date, which began on April 1st, there has been an average of 1604 growing degree days in Kansas, or 139 above normal. Departures for the growing season range from +131 in northwest and north central Kansas to +179 in west central Kansas. There was an average of 39 corn stress degree days during the period across the state. The average since April 1 is 180. Southwest Kansas has the highest average at 249, while northeast Kansas’ average is lowest at 86.READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/011b7f20-9fed-4cde-b36f-2ea40001351e">Saline County residents share testimony for better broadband access at recent Broadband Community Forum</a>There were multiple heavy rain events during the period, but for the most part, the coverage of these events was limited. At least one CoCoRaHS observer reported two inches or more of rain on six out of the seven days of the period; all reports on the 27th were just six-tenths of an inch or less. On the 26th, heavy rain reports were confined to areas along the Missouri border. The highest totals were in Doniphan County where all six CoCoRaHS reports received were over two inches, with a 3.25” amount near Bendena the highest. Barber County picked up from 2 to 3 inches on the 28th. The highest total was 3.35” west-southwest of Medicine Lodge. An intense thunderstorm on the evening of the 28th dropped as much as six inches of rain in Geary County, leading to street flooding in Junction City. Hail as large as golf balls accompanied the torrential rain. Parts of southwest Kansas were inundated on the 30th. The 4.39” which fell at Dodge City was the fifth-highest single-day total in 150 years of records at that site. This boosted the monthly total at Dodge City to 12.02”, setting a new mark for the wettest June on record. An observer in southeastern Ford County picked up 6.25” of rain from the same system. In addition, there were reports of over 4 inches of rain from CoCoRaHS observers in Clark, Kiowa, Comanche, Pratt, and Cowley Counties. On the 1st, heavy rain fell along a line from Manhattan to Olathe. Johnson County had the highest totals, with eleven CoCoRaHS reports of at least four inches of rain, with four of those reports exceeding five inches. Lower totals fell further west; reports were generally from two to three inches in the Lawrence and Topeka areas. Seven-day totals of at least five inches of rain were reported in fourteen different counties in the state, with the highest amount 7.35” in Grandview Plaza in Geary County. Severe weather accompanied the heavy rain in some areas. There were two tornadoes during the period on June 28th in Lyon and Osage Counties. There were no reports of damage from either tornado. There were 77 reports of severe wind gusts 58 mph or higher. Of these, 12 reports were of winds at or above hurricane force (74 mph). The peak gusts were 86 mph in Shawnee County on the 26th and in Thomas County on the 1st. There were eleven reports of severe hail 1” or greater in diameter during the period. The largest report was 2.75” in Cowley County northeast of Winfield on the 29th.<figure>

 </figure>The statewide average precipitation for the 7-day period was 1.56”, or 170% of the weekly normal amount of 0.92”. The highest divisional total was 2.64” in northeast Kansas, narrowly beating out east central Kansas at 2.63”. Only two divisions were below normal; central Kansas was the driest division (0.33”) followed by north central (0.64”) Kansas. Since April 1st, the average precipitation across Kansas is 11.35”, or 95% of the normal amount of 11.95”. The three eastern divisions remain above normal, and southwest Kansas is now above normal (103%). Northeast Kansas remains the most above normal division (+3.54”), while central Kansas is still the most below normal (-3.06”). Since January 1st, the average statewide precipitation is 14.62”. This amount is 93% of normal, or a departure of –1.08”. The three eastern divisions are the only three divisions above normal for the year. Central Kansas has the lowest percent of normal (76%). Departures for the year to date range from -3.65” in central Kansas to +3.04” in northeast Kansas.<figure>

 </figure>The average evapotranspiration for grass across the state (based on Kansas Mesonet data) for the week was 1.57”. This is close to the 10-year normal (2014 to 2023) of 1.59” for the 7-day period. Divisional averages ranged from 1.30” in northeast to 1.81” in west central Kansas. The statewide average 2” soil temperature across the Kansas Mesonet for the period was 79.7°, or 1.5° above normal.In this week’s US Drought Monitor update, one-category improvements were made to parts of 30 counties in southern Kansas, as well as to six counties near and to the south of Kansas City. There were a few small areas with 1-category degradation in northwest, north central, and southeast Kansas. The statewide Drought Severity and Coverage Index (DSCI) fell 15 points to 80. This is the lowest DSCI since December 14, 2021. A total of 45% of the state is now drought-free, up from 39% last week. The percentage of Kansas in D2 or worse drought status is down to only 4 percent. The last time there were no areas of D2 or worse drought in Kansas was nearly three years ago on July 27, 2021.The Weather Prediction Center’s 7-day precipitation forecast, valid for the period July 3rd through the 9th, calls for near or above normal precipitation for the eastern two-thirds of Kansas, with below normal precipitation favored in the western third of the state. A few areas in central and southeast Kansas may pick up over two inches of rain, but totals from 1.5 to 2 inches are more likely. Temperatures during the period are expected to average slightly below normal. The average daily high and low across Kansas for this period are 91° and 66°. Average 7-day precipitation is 0.70” in western Kansas, 0.88” in central Kansas, and 1.03” in eastern Kansas. The 8 to 14-day outlook, valid for the period July 10th through the 16th, favors above normal temperatures statewide, with the highest probabilities in northwestern Kansas. Below normal precipitation is favored in northwest and north central Kansas, with a small area of elevated chances of above normal precipitation along the Oklahoma border. Looking even further ahead, the outlook for the 14-day period from July 13th to July 26th suggests above normal temperatures are likely. Below normal precipitation in most of the state.

NWS-Wichita three day weather forecast

A multi-day triple-digit heat wave is moving toward Kansas early this week, bringing a possible 108-degree heat index to Salina on Tuesday.

U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita) forecasters predict a significant heat wave will impact Kansas after setting record temperatures in the eastern United States.

This early-summer heat could rival previous records due to its timing in early June since heat waves occur more frequently later in the season. The hottest time of day will be from 1 to 7 p.m. each day.

NWS Wichita recommends that residents remain indoors to limit outdoor exposure during peak temperatures and stay hydrated to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

According to NWS meteorologists, this will be the peak of the heat wave, and the Plains, Mid-South and Southeast regions of the United States will see the hottest temperatures, with some places set to exceed 110 degrees.

This, paired with warm overnight temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, offers little relief from the oppressive heat for those without reliable access to air conditioning.

Dangerous heat impacts Kansas, 107-degree heat index

Kansas weekly drought update and climate report for June 12–18, 2024

The warmest temperatures so far this year were observed during the past week. The average daily temperature across the Kansas Mesonet was above normal on all seven days of the period. The 13th was the hottest day, with the statewide average high temperature reaching 99°, and over half of the Mesonet sites registering highs of at least 100°. The co-operative observer in Hays recorded a high of 110° that afternoon. This stands as not only the week’s but also the year's hottest temperature to date. Notably, this was the earliest 110° reading at Hays on record, occurring 11 days earlier than the previous record set in 2012. A few daily records were set, including Minneapolis at 105° and Beloit at 104°. Lows were mostly in the 60s, with some warmer lows in the 70s. On the 17th, every Mesonet site in the state recorded a low in the 70s, a rare occurrence last seen nearly 18 years ago on July 30, 2006. Back in 2006, there were just 14 Mesonet sites in operation versus the present count of 85 sites.

The 7-day average temperature across Kansas was 80.3°, or 6.0° above normal. All nine climate divisions were above normal, with departures ranging from +4.7° in south-central to +7.9° in both northwest and west-central Kansas. There was an average of 186 growing degree days across the state, based on Kansas Mesonet data, which is 26 above normal. Divisional totals ranged from 178 in northwest to 196 in southeast Kansas, with departures ranging from +18 in south-central to +35 in northwest Kansas. For the growing season to date, which began on April 1st, there has been an average of 1238 growing degree days in Kansas, 115 above the normal total of 1123. Departures for the growing season range from +106 in northwest to +152 in south-central Kansas. There was an average of 53 corn stress degree days during the period across the state. The average since April 1 for the state is 88. Southwest Kansas has the highest average for the growing season to date at 149, while southeast Kansas’ average is the lowest at 33.

The most significant rainfall during the period fell from the 15th into the 16th in northeast Kansas, an area that has seen multiple rounds of heavy rain in the past month. At least one CoCoRaHS observer in seven different counties measured at least two inches of rain: Morris, Geary, Riley, Marshall, Pottawatomie, Nemaha, and Jackson. The highest total for the 24-hour period ending at 7 AM on the 16th was 3.58” in Pottawatomie County southeast of Blaine. Eight additional counties in the northeast quarter of the state had at least one report of over one inch of rain. Far southeastern Kansas was the driest area of the state during the period. All CoCoRaHS observers in Montgomery, Labette, Cherokee, Neosho, Crawford, Allen, and Bourbon Counties recorded no rainfall. Other parts of the state were dry as well, but totals in these areas varied somewhat. There was only a trace of rain in both Goodland and Olathe (Johnson County Industrial), and the official total for Wichita was just 0.01”. Other low totals include Winfield (0.02”), Lawrence (0.03”), Garden City (0.07”), and Emporia (0.10”).

There was one tornado during the period, the first reported in the state this month. The tornado was sighted in Ford County near Ensign. There were 85 reports of severe hail 1” or greater in diameter during the period, with 17 reports of significant hail at least 2” in diameter. The largest hail report was 3.5” in Manhattan (Riley County) on the 13th, causing damage to buildings and vehicles on the Kansas State University campus. There were 65 reports of severe wind gusts 58 mph or higher, with eight reports at or above hurricane force (74 mph). The highest gust was 83 mph, recorded by the Kansas Mesonet tower in Seward County near Satanta on the evening of the 18th.

The statewide average precipitation for the 7-day period was 0.61”, or 62% of the weekly normal amount of 0.98”. The highest divisional total was 2.00” in northeast Kansas, followed by 1.10” in north-central Kansas. These were the only two divisions with above normal precipitation this past week. Southeast Kansas was driest at 0.08”, followed by west-central (0.29”) and northwest (0.35”) Kansas. Since April 1st, the average precipitation across Kansas is 9.01”, or 90% of the normal amount of 10.05”. The three eastern divisions remain above normal, with southeast (+1.98”) and northeast (+1.90”) Kansas the most above normal. Southwest Kansas is the driest division (5.01”), but central Kansas remains the most below normal (-2.77”). Since January 1st, the average statewide precipitation is 12.28”, 89% of normal, or a departure of –1.52”. Four divisions are above normal for the year: the three eastern divisions plus northwest Kansas. West-central Kansas fell to below normal this week (98%, down 5%). Departures for the year to date range from -3.77” in south-central Kansas to +1.45” in southeast Kansas.

The average evapotranspiration for grass across the state, based on Kansas Mesonet data, for the week was 1.90”. This is slightly above the 10-year normal (2014 to 2023) of 1.82” for the 7-day period. Divisional averages ranged from 1.65” in east-central to 2.11” in southwest Kansas. The statewide average 2” soil temperature across the Kansas Mesonet for the period was 78.4°, or 1.2° above normal.

In this week’s US Drought Monitor update, there were a few small areas with one-category improvements in parts of southwest, west-central, and north-central Kansas. These improvements resulted in towns such as Johnson City, Leoti, and Clay Center returning to drought-free status. New areas of D0 were introduced in southeast Kansas as well as on the south side of the Kansas City metropolitan area, including Lawrence and Olathe. The statewide Drought Severity and Coverage Index (DSCI) fell 2 points to 97. A total of 45% of the state is now drought-free, an increase of 2% since last week. The percentage of Kansas in D2 or worse drought status is unchanged this week at 9%.

The Weather Prediction Center’s 7-day precipitation forecast, valid for the period June 19th through the 25th, calls for below normal precipitation across most of the state. A stripe of near to slightly above normal precipitation extends from northeast to south-central Kansas, in conjunction with storms in progress at the end of the report period. Temperatures during the period are expected to average slightly above normal. The average daily high and low across Kansas for this period are 88° and 64°. Average 7-day precipitation is 0.69” in western Kansas, 0.93” in central Kansas, and 1.19” in eastern Kansas. The 8 to 14-day outlook, valid for the period June 26th through July 2nd, favors above normal temperatures statewide, with probabilities ranging from 60 to 70% across the state. There are slightly elevated chances of above normal precipitation in southeast Kansas, with near normal precipitation favored across the remainder of the state. Looking even further ahead, the outlook for the 14-day period from June 29th to July 12th suggests above normal temperatures will persist into next month, with near normal precipitation expected.

Saturday night has a 20% chance for showers and thunderstorms before the night rolls into the early hours of Sunday. Forecasters predict Sunday's high temperature of 96 degrees and breezy.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northeastern McPherson County and Saline County in central Kansas. The warning is in effect until 9:30 PM CDT.

At 8:55 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from near Culver to near Smolan to Lindsborg, moving east at 35 mph. The primary hazards associated with these storms include 60 mph wind gusts. The storms have been confirmed by radar.

Residents should expect potential damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Areas expected to be impacted include Salina, Lindsborg, Assaria, Gypsum, Smolan, New Cambria, Bridgeport, Salina Airport, Roxbury, and Kipp.

The National Weather Service advises all residents in the affected areas to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building for protection.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Wind Advisory from noon to 9 p.m. Monday.&nbsp;

South winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 45 mph are expected in Barton, Ellsworth, Lincoln, McPherson, Rice, Russell, Saline, Harvey, and Reno Counties.

Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

NWS issues wind advisory for our area

Severe thunderstorms moved across central Kansas on June 15 impacting several festivals in the area.&nbsp;

Storms started forming by about 3:00 p.m. The Salina Regional Airport clocked wind gust up to 77 mph at 4:08 pm. on Saturday.

Salina Post will update this as new information becomes available.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Severe thunderstorm warning for Central Saline County in central Kansas Until 5:00 p.m.&nbsp;

At 4:09 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Salina, moving northeast at 35 mph.

Impact Expect considerable tree damage. Damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

Locations impacted include: &nbsp;Salina, Smolan, New Cambria, and Salina Airport.

The 38th SM Hanson Festival Jam is delayed due to weather.

At 6:41 p.m. event emcees told the crowd of thousands the show would resume at 7:30 p.m.

From cool drinks near a body of water to late-night bonfires in the backyard, one aspect of the Kansas summer remains the same: triple-digit heat indexes.

More than ten thousand residents and visitors plan to gather in Oakdale Park tomorrow for the annual Smoky Hill River Festival, but forecasters at the U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita) predict heat indices to rise well above 100 degrees.

Meteorologists predict a 107-degree heat index in Salina tomorrow afternoon, right at the beginning of the SM Hanson Festival Jam. On Wednesday, June 12, NWS Wichita meteorologists issued a heat advisory lasting until 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12.

Heat-related illnesses can vary from minor ailments, such as a heat rash, to hospitalization from heat stroke. The Kansas Department of Health Environment (KDHE) stated in its <a href="https://keap.kdhe.ks.gov/Ephtm/EphtContent/documents/Toolkit%2020140519.pdf">"Kansas Extreme Heat Toolkit"</a> that early signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, visual disturbances, weakness, anxiety, confusion and vomiting.

Those with early signs of heat exhaustion should stop any activity, relocate to a shaded or indoor area and drink electrolyte-containing fluids like sports drinks, fruit juices or water.

KDHE staff also advise that older residents or those with preexisting health concerns are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses and should take precautionary measures before attending an outdoor event during a heat advisory.
