The Salina Liberty continued their strong start to the season with a dominant win over Wichita on Saturday, routing the Regulators 54-25 in front of the home faithful.

With this result, the Liberty move to 3-1 on the year while Wichita falls to 1-3.

Salina wasted no time starting the scoring when Tracy Brooks punched in the first touchdown of the day from three yards out to give the Liberty a 12-0 lead in the first.

On the very next play, the Regulators looked to even the score, but Dontra Matthews had other ideas, housing a pick-six to double the Liberty lead on a lightning-strike score.

The teams would trade touchdowns before the end of the quarter, but Salina held a 19-7 advantage going into the second, where two more scoring swaps would make the score 33-19 going into the intermission.

The second half was all Liberty, and after extending their lead on two touchdown passes to Demarius Washington bookending another pick-six by Freddie McGee, the game ended as it began on Tracy Brooks’ second score from the goal line.

When the dust settled, Salina had won 54-25, the 29–point margin of victory representing their largest lead of the 2024 campaign.

Charles McCullum continued to cook under center, adding four more passing touchdowns without a single turnover in the win.

Salina will be back on the road next week when they travel to Dodge City to take on the Southwest Kansas Storm on June 2nd.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 and the game can be heard locally on KINA (910 AM or 107.5 FM), or online at 910KINA.com.

KWU Track has pair of All-America performances at NAIA National Championships

LEWISTON, Idaho - Kansas Wesleyan's run at the 67th Annual Avista NAIA World Series came to an end on Saturday as the Coyotes dropped an 11-5 decision to the Hope International University Royals at Harris Field.

Hope International scored eight of its 11 runs in the game when there was two outs in an inning, taking a page from the Coyote playbook where 2-out rallies played a big part of KWU's success throughout the season.

Things started well for the Coyotes in the top of the first inning as <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/2a1f53a3-32db-48c0-95ea-8c2a1f782f16?elinkdata=10345">Jacob Williamson</a> led off with a walk and then <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/f0baf860-cd82-4f3a-bb2c-9f7b8669f8b3?elinkdata=10345">Kendall Foster</a> hit a 2-run homer to put the Coyotes up 2-0.

KWU got two outs in the bottom of the first on the Royals, but then Hope International got things going, loading the bases and then scoring twice on a 2-run double and added two more runs on an error by the Coyotes.

The Royals added another 2-out run in the bottom of the second, to make it 5-2, but the Coyotes got right back into it in the third. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Nelson Velázquez homered and had an RBI double in a three-run 11th inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 on Saturday for their eighth straight victory.

After both teams scored once in the 10th, Velázquez opened the 11th with his hit and scored on Adam Frazier's run-scoring single off Richard Lovelady (0-3). Maikel Garcia also drove in a run with a hit.

James McArthur (2-2) allowed one run in two innings, and Nick Anderson worked a scoreless 11th to get his first save.

Kansas City's Kyle Isbel left in the seventh after a pitch by reliever Garrett Cleavinger hit him in the face while swinging. Isabel remained on his feet and walked off with a trainer holding a towel on his face. The team announced that Isbel has facial lacerations and will undergo additional tests.

Dairon Blanco pinch-hit for Isbel and put the Royals ahead 3-2 on a sacrifice fly.

Velázquez had a second-inning homer and Bobby Witt Jr. extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games with an RBI single off Aaron Civale in the third.

Kansas City’s Hunter Renfroe hit a towering fly with a runner on second and two outs in the ninth that Ramírez lost sight of in left field, but center fielder Jose Siri was backing up the play and made the catch.

Jonathan Aranda hit a solo homer in fourth off Royals starter Brady Singer.

Both Civale and Singer gave up two runs and four hits over five innings.

Royals: INF Michael Massey, who left Friday’s game with lower back tightness, didn’t play. Massey has had occasional back issues since spring training.

Rays: OF Josh Lowe went on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain. Lowe has played in just 14 games after starting the season on the IL with an injury in the same area.

LEWISTON, Idaho - <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/185b7487-ef46-4eae-adfa-e261b932b269?elinkdata=10324">Cruz Oxford</a> homered twice and drove in seven runs, but his outstanding effort wasn't enough as the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes dropped their NAIA World Series debut to Arizona Christian 17-10 on Friday at Harris Field.

Oxford hit two 3-run homers, one in the eighth and one in the ninth, to go along with a RBI ground out in the sixth inning for his seven RBI day.

The game was scoreless through the first two innings until Arizona Christian put three on the board in the top of the third inning, and then added another in the fifth.

<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/11e9e84a-5436-425c-85ae-9d05e123bd7b?elinkdata=10324">Zack Beatty</a> then drove in KWU's first-ever World Series run with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning that made it 4-1.

ACU scored five times in the fifth inning to push the lead out to 9-1 before the Coyotes got a pair in the sixth on <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/5635d08c-5e3d-49ee-8899-125a7d37c907?elinkdata=10324">Jarrett Gable's</a> sacrifice fly and Oxford's ground out.

Oxford homers twice, drives in seven, but Coyotes fall short in World Series debut

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Seth Lugo became the American League's first eight-game winner, Michael Massey and Bobby Witt Jr, homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-1 on Friday night for their seventh consecutive victory.

Lugo (8-1) allowed one run and four hits, lowering his AL-best ERA from 1.79 to to 1.74. Only Philadelphia's Ranger Suárez has more victories in the majors with nine.

The Royals are a season-best 14-game over .500 at 33-19. Kansas City was 15-37 after 52 games last season and did not get to 33 wins until Aug. 1.

Massey put Kansas City ahead 5-1 in the fifth with a three-run homer off Tyler Alexander (2-3). Massey, who has 21 RBIs in his last 21 games, left in the sixth due to lower back tightness.

Witt extended his hitting streak to seven games with a solo homer against Alexander in a two-run seventh that made it 8-1. Both dugouts were warned by the umpires after Alexander hit the next batter after Witt, Vinnie Pasquantino, with a 90.3 mph fastball.

Tampa Bay has lost a season-high five in a row to fall to 25-27.

The Rays loaded the bases with one out in the first against Lugo, but scored just once on Jonathan Aranda’s fielder’s choice grounder.

After opener Shawn Armstrong went two perfect innings. Alexander gave up eight runs and 11 hits in five innings. Alexander took a perfect game into the eighth in his previous outing, a start May 17 at Toronto.

The Mustangs pulled off the unthinkable at regionals, defeating the top seed in Maize South 12-8, before eliminating Hutch 3-2, punching their ticket to state as the 16 seed.

Area HS baseball and softball state schedule and results

The Southeast of Saline softball team battled to the very end but fell to Frontenac on a walk-off hit, dropping their quarterfinal contest 3-2.

The Lady Trojans conclude another stellar campaign at 22-4 while the Lady Raiders move on to face Wichita Trinity in Friday’s semifinals.

This contest was a pitcher's duel from the outset, and baserunners came at a premium thanks to Souhteast’s Lexi Jacobson and Frontenac’s Avery Johnson.

In the top of the third SES would strike first, utilizing small ball and a sac bunt from Maddie Harris to plate the first two runs of the game.

Frontenac wasted no time responding with a run of their own in the bottom of the third, but from there both pitchers locked things down from the circle.

When all was said and done, Avery Johnson would finish her day with 14 strikeouts, allowing just those two runs on four hits without issuing a single walk in the process.

Down to their final four outs, the Lady Raiders got a clutch RBI single from Skylar Hutchinson to tie the game at two going into the seventh.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning, Frontenac returned to the plate, where a leadoff single by Ella Sullivan set the stage for a dramatic finish.

Two groundouts put the potential game-winning run on third base, and in an effort to create a force at any bag, Southeast intentionally walked the next two batters.

That gamble almost paid off, but Avery Johnson managed to lift a ball into the gap in right-center, just out of the reach of two Lady Trojan outfielders, to bring in the game-winning run.
