KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer stuck out nine, Vinnie Pasquantino hit a three-run triple and the Kansas City Royals completed a sweep of the Oakland Athletics with an 8-1 victory Sunday.

It was the third sweep of the season for Kansas City. It took until September 20 for the Royals to record their third sweep of the season last year.

Singer (4-2) tossed six innings on one-run ball, giving up six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. It was the fifth time this season that Singer has stuck out six or more and was one shy of his season high. He has gone at least five innings in every start this season.

“That’s what we were hoping for, the early counts and low pitch counts and making them make decisions," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "Certainly couldn't ask more for that when it comes to efficiency. To have him set the tone like that and get the early lead that’s all we could hope for.”

Pasquantino hit a three-run pinch-hit triple to highlight a four-run sixth inning for the Royals. It was his first career triple in the Majors. Kansas City ended the day with five extra-base hits.

“The nice thing about the Majors is that we have a batting cage close, so from the third inning on, I’m getting hot for that one opportunity," Pasquantino said. “I’m not coming into the game for my speed; I know it’ll be a high-leverage situation, so I was able to do that today.”

Bobby Witt Jr. went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Maikel Garcia had a two-RBI game and extended a six-game hitting streak. Salvador Perez had a two-hit game with an RBI.

JP Sears (3-3) tossed 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Brent Rooker hit his 11th home run of the season with a three-run shot over the left-field bullpen. He leads the team in the category.

Tyler Soderstrom put the A’s on the board with a two-out double in the fourth. Since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Soderstorm has a hit in six of nine games. Max Schuemann had a two-hit game.

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Oakland had a chance to take the lead with bases loaded with two outs, but Singer ended the inning on a Rooker groundout. Oakland left 10 men on base on 11 hits.

“We have to do a better job of scoring on situations to keep ourselves close late in games,” Rooker said. “We just need to take advantage when we have opportunities. We are just going to keep working. The guys stepping into the box are working hard. We are just going to keep pushing through this tough stretch.”

On a 10-game road trip, the Athletics went 1-9, including an eight-game losing streak. It was also the fourth time Oakland has been swept this season.

“I think the at-bats were better the last two days. We pitched better than we had all series,” A's manager Mark Kotsay said. “Sometimes you get into these ruts where you start hitting well but not pitching and vice versa. You just have to push through them.”

The Athletics head home after a 10-day, tri-city road trip hosting the Rockies beginning on Tuesday night. Aaron Brooks (0-1, 3.86 ERA) will start game one for Oakland. Kansas City continues a six-game homestand with a matchup against Detroit beginning Monday night. Michael Wacha (3-4, 4.71 ERA) will take the mound for the Royals.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Seth Lugo struck out 10 and earned his American League-leading seventh victory as the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 5-3 Saturday night.

The Royals improved to 28-19, nine games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2015 season, when they went on to win the World Series. Kansas City also claimed its eighth series win of the season, a mark the Royals didn't reach until mid-September in 2023.

“With this pitching staff, we don't need much,” second baseman Michael Massey said. "When a hitter is on a hot streak, at what point is he just good and not on a hot streak? I feel like that's where we're starting to get as a team. It's not really a streak. We're just playing the way we're supposed to play.

Oakland lost its seventh straight game, the team's longest skid of the season.

Lugo (7-1) allowed two runs on six hits with a walk in 5 2/3 innings. The 34-year-old right-hander had his second straight double-digit strikeout game and became the eighth Royals pitcher to accomplish that feat. James McArthur picked up his 11th save.

“The starter's job is to pitch deep into the game,” he said. “When (John) Schreiber's having to go multiple innings and three relievers are used, I feel like the standard should be to pitch deeper and to take the load off (the bullpen).”

"You feel really good that he's going to keep you in it” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. ”His stuff looked really good. The home run pitch was just him not getting the ball where he wanted it.

“This was a good test for Lugo. This was the first night when it was really warm and humid, and you could see that they made him work.”

Ross Stripling (1-8) picked up his league-leading eighth loss. The 34-year-old righty allowed four runs on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts in five-plus innings.

The Athletics had plenty of chances, pounding out 11 hits, but they only pushed across three runs.

“We just didn't get the big hit,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “They were able to capitalize with two outs. But, offensively, there were better signs.”

The Royals got to Stripling for a pair of runs in the first. Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr. opened with singles. After the runners advanced to second and third on a groundout, Salvador Perez drove in both with a single to left field.

“I don't care when we score runs,” Quatraro said, “but it's better to get out to a lead. We knew Stripling was going to be tough.”

The Athletics answered in the second. Zack Gelof legged out a double before Seth Brown hit his fourth homer of the season, a 445-foot shot to center field to tie the score.

The Royals regained the lead in the fifth when Vinnie Pasquantino snapped an 0-for-14 slump with a two-out line drive single that scored Garcia. The Royals added to the lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Nelson Velazquez that scored Massey, who led off with a double.

The Athletics closed within a run on an RBI single by Brent Rooker in the seventh. But the Royals got that run back on a leadoff home run by Kyle Isbel, his fourth, in the bottom of the seventh.

The Athletics and Royals will close their three-game series Sunday afternoon. The Athletics will send LHP JP Sears (3-2, 3.96 ERA) to the mound to face RHP Brady Singer (3-2, 2.84 ERA).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cole Ragans allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings, Michael Massey and Maikel Garcia homered and the Kansas City Royals beat Oakland 6-2 on Friday night to extend the Athletics losing streak to a season-high six.

Ragans (3-3) walked two and struck out seven, rebounding from a 9-3 loss at the Los Angeles Angels when he allowed seven runs and eight hits. He has three scoreless starts of at least six innings this season.

Chris Stratton and Matt Sauers finished the four-hitter, the ninth time Oakland has been held to four hits or fewer.

Oakland has been outscored 36-6 during its losing streak, which dropped the A's to 19-28.

Kansas City went ahead in the first when Salvador Perez hit a two-out, run-scoring infield single. Perez was called out by first base umpire Ryan Additon, but a video review ruled Perez beat the throw from third baseman Brett Harris.

Massey hit a two-run homer off Austin Adams and Maikel Garcia a three-run drive against Brandon Bielak in a five-run sixth.

Mitch Spence (3-2) gave up one run and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Shea Langeliers hit a two-run homer off Sauers in the ninth, his 10th this season.

Oakland activated Bielak, a day after he was acquired from Houston for cash. LHP Hogan Harris was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas.

The Southeast of Saline track and field teams qualified well at the Beliot regional with the boys team finishing third and the girls team finishing fourth.

Overall six boys, five girls, and two relay teams qualified for state in a total of 19 different events.

On the boys side, the Trojans finished with 80.75 points, just behind Lakin in second (86), and Holcomb in first (140.75).

The Lady Trojans meanwhile closed out the meet with 57 points, behind the eventual winners in Beloit (95).

Trojan track qualifies seven for state at Beloit regional

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/masters-2024-augusta-national-8f9bcddc2f3c8aa4298a83c016286918">Masters champion Scottie Scheffler</a>&nbsp;was arrested Friday morning on his way to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scottie-scheffler-pga-championship-dc43b1facb4b7c5e6a8c9b29159a6ae2">PGA Championship</a>, with stunning images showing him handcuffed as he was taken to jail for not following police orders during a pedestrian fatality investigation.

In a span of four hours, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scottie-scheffler-tiger-woods-players-championship-387cadc831f8bf7f63e00673166d6add">top-ranked golfer</a>&nbsp;in the world was arrested wearing gym shorts and a T-shirt, dressed in an orange jail shirt for his mug shot, stretched in a jail cell to stay loose and returned to Valhalla Golf Club dressed and ready for his 10:08 a.m. tee time.

Louisville Metro Police Department said Scheffler was booked on four charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer after his vehicle dragged an officer to the ground.

Scheffler said the incident was a “big misunderstanding amid a chaotic situation.”

“I feel like my head is still spinning. I can't really explain what happened this morning,” Scheffler said after remarkably posting another 5-under 66 that kept him in the mix for a second straight major championship.

He said he could not offer specifics on the arrest because it was under investigation. In a statement released before his round, he said never intended to disregard police instructions outside the entrance to the club.

“I definitely never imagined ever going to jail, and I definitely never imagined going to jail the morning before one of my tee times for sure,” Scheffler said. “I was grateful to be able to go out there and compete and yeah, it was definitely a nice round of golf.”

His attorney, Steve Romines in Louisville, also described it as a misunderstanding and told The Associated Press, “We will litigate the case as it goes.”

Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg said tournament vendor John Mills was the pedestrian killed and offered sympathies to his family. Greenberg also said the incident involving Scheffler and LMPD was “unfortunate” and that the police department was investigating.

Traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the only road that leads to Valhalla in the morning darkness with light rain, with dozens of police vehicles flashing red-and-blue lights near the entrance.

Police approached the long line of cars waiting to say a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic.

Mills, 69, was working for a PGA Championship vendor. He was pronounced dead at the scene about 5:09 a.m.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident and said Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world who was to start the second round at 8:48 a.m., drove past a police officer a little after 6 a.m. in his SUV with markings on the door indicating it was a PGA Championship vehicle.

The officer screamed at him to stop and then grabbed onto the car until Scheffler stopped about 10 yards later, Darlington said. The officer, identified in the arrest report as Det. Gillis, was dragged “to the ground” and suffered “pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist” after the car “accelerated forward,” according to Louisville police.

Scheffler was booked at 7:28 a.m. — about 2 1/2 hours before his updated tee time after the second round was delayed because of the fatality. In addition to the assault charge, he was booked on charges of third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

“The main thing is he was proceeding exactly as he was directed in a marked vehicle with credentials," Romines said. “He didn’t do anything intentionally wrong.”

The officer was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler’s car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

Darlington said police pulled Scheffler out of the car, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

“Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, ‘Please help me,’" Darlington said. “He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively.”

Scheffler was released by police and returned to the course at 9:12 a.m. He made his way to the practice area around 9:30 a.m. and was welcomed by fans — one shouted “free Scottie!” and others arrived later wearing “Free Scottie” T-shirts.

Scheffler seemed like his normal, relaxed self, sharing a few laughs on the driving range.

“I was never angry. I was just in shock,” Scheffler said. “I was shaking the whole time. I was shaking for like an hour. It was definitely a new feeling for me.”

He could see from a TV in the jail that tee times were pushed back 1 hour, 20 minutes because of the traffic situation, and realized when an officer knocked on the door and said, “Let's go,” that he had a chance to play.

He made birdie on his first hole of the day after sticking his approach shot to 3 feet.

Darlington, the ESPN reporter, said police were not sure who Scheffler was at first. He said an officer asked him to leave and when he identified himself being with the media, he was told, “There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail.”

Darlington said another police officer later approached with a notepad and asked if he knew the name of the person they put in handcuffs.

Scheffler said he never told police who he was except to say, “I'm sorry, I'm just trying to get to my tee time.”

Louisville police have attracted negative national attention in recent years after the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in 2020 and a federal investigation into its policing practices.

A Department of Justice report released last year said Louisville officers use excessive force and conduct searches based on invalid warrants. The report said Black motorists in Louisville were more likely to be searched during traffic stops, and officers used neck restraints, police dogs and Tasers against people who posed no imminent threat.

Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, was shot by officers in who had come to her apartment with a warrant that federal officials later said was falsified.

PGA of America, which runs the PGA Championship, offered sympathies for Mills' family and said in a statement, “As it relates to the incident involving Scottie Scheffler, we are fully cooperating as local authorities review what took place.”

Scheffler is coming off four victories in his last five tournaments, including his second Masters title. He was home in Dallas the last three weeks waiting on the birth of his first child, a son that was born May 8.

Scheffler, who has won four of his last five tournaments, is trying to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year.

In a span of four hours, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scottie-scheffler-tiger-woods-players-championship-387cadc831f8bf7f63e00673166d6add">top-ranked golfer</a>&nbsp;in the world was arrested wearing gym shorts and a T-shirt, dressed in an orange jail shirt for his mug shot, returned to Valhalla Golf Club in golf clothes and made his 10:08 a.m. second-round tee time.

“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers,” he said in a statement released as he was warming up on the range. "It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.

“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions,” he said. “I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today. Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”

Police said a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic and was pronounced dead at the scene about 5:09 a.m. The PGA of America identified the man as an employee of one of its vendors.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington said Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world who was to start the second round at 8:48 a.m., drove past a police officer a little after 6 a.m. in his SUV with markings on the door indicating it was a PGA Championship vehicle.

The officer screamed at him to stop and then grabbed onto the car until Scheffler stopped about 10 yards later. The officer, identified in the arrest report as Det. Gillis, was dragged “to the ground” and suffered “pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist” after the car “accelerated forward,” according to Louisville police.

Scheffler was booked at 7:28 a.m. — about 2 1/2 hours before his updated tee time after the second round was delayed because of the fatality. Police said he was booked for second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Darlington watched it unfold. He said police pulled Scheffler out of the car, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

Mitchell told Louisville radio station WHAS the man was crossing Shelbyville Road about 5 a.m. and the bus didn't see him. Mitchell said the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Scheffler was released by police and returned to the course at 9:12 a.m. He made his way to the practice area around 9:30 a.m. and was welcomed by fans — one shouted “free Scottie!”

Scheffler seemed like his normal, relaxed self, sharing a few laughs on the driving range. Then he went out and made a birdie on his first hole of the day after sticking his approach shot to three feet.

With cars backed up in the morning darkness, other PGA-marked vehicles tried to move slowly toward the entrance. Traffic finally began to move gradually a little before 7 a.m.

It was a surreal start to what already has been a wild week of weather — the Masters champion and top-ranked player in the world, dressed in workout clothes with his hands in cuffs behind his back amid flashing flights.

Darlington said police were not sure who Scheffler was. He said an officer asked him to leave and when he identified himself being with the media, he was told, “There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail.”

Scheffler opened with a 4-under 67 and was five shots out of the lead as he tries to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year.

Hello and happy Friday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

On Thursday the final tickets to this year’s state baseball and softball tournaments were officially punched, as the few remaining brackets wrapped things up across the state.

Down in Hays, the TMP baseball regional saw a pair of area foes go at it, as the Sacred heart Knights knocked off Ell-Saline 14-4, but fell to the hosts in TMP by a final score of 5-4.

Both of those games were broadcast with live audio and video on Salina Post and are available on-demand any time

Meanwhile, down in Sylvan Lucas the Bennington Lady Bulldogs picked up a big win over Ell-Saline, knocking off the Lady Cardinals 7-2 before themselves being befallen by TMP in a 7-3 regional final.

With that, the state fields are set and four of our area teams will be competing for state titles next week, on behalf of the whole staff here at KINA&nbsp;congrats&nbsp;and good luck to the Southeast of Saline softball team, and the Salina South, Salina Central and Abilene baseball teams. 910 KINA Sports Headlines — May 17

The Abilene Cowboys left little doubt about their playoff prowess this week, steamrolling their way through the 4A regional bracket to punch a ticket to this year’s state tournament.

With victories of 12-2 over Winfield and 7-2 over Mulvane, Abilene will return to Salina for a second straight season to play for a 4A title.

Overall I thought the guys played well,” Abilene head coach Travis Bartley said. “We got good starts from Kyson and Stocton, our defense played well and the offense got things going early. Practice leading up to Tuesday went well and the guys were calm and confident.”

The Cowboys wasted no time getting up on their first opponent, leading Winfield 3-0 after one and 5-0 after three.

Winfield would scratch across a lone run in the fourth and sixth, but Abilene galloped away with a big sixth inning to put the semifinal match to bed early.

Kyson Becker was lights out on the bump for the Cowboys, allowing just one earned run on three hits, striking out eight, and walking just one.

At the plate, Zach Miller and Heath Hoekman ran wild on the basepaths, coming in to score 7 of Abilene’s 12 runs on the day.

Alongside Hoekman, Stocton Timbrook, Jake Bartley, and Tyler Holloway also found timely hits, with that quartet driving in 11 of the Cowboy’s 12 runs.

Game two was more of a pitcher's duel early with the two sides scoreless going into the bottom of the third.

From there, the Abilene bats warmed, and the Cowboys struck for three runs in the third, two more in the fourth, and two in the sixth to eliminate Mulvane 7-2.

This time, it was Stocton Timbrook and Jake Bartley who locked down the Mulvane lineup, combining to toss seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits and cutting down twelve batters on strikes.

At the dish Thomas Keener, Zach Miller, and Heath Hoekman all recorded multi-hit games, with Miller and Hoekman driving in four more runs in the win.

The 4A state tournament will be played at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina from May 23 to May 24.

The victory propels the Coyotes into the Shreveport Bracket championship where K-Dub will face the hosts in LSU-Shreveport today, with a chance to punch their ticket to the big show in Idaho later this month

Yesterday also saw the continuation of regional baseball action in our area, and an excellent day for the Salina South Cougars, who pulled off an extra-inning win over Great Bend before<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/425f2863-27dc-4be4-ab19-e3ea5c4a6f7d"> taking down Emporia 6-2 t</a>o advance to this year’s 5A state tournament.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — May 16

​​BOSSIER CITY, La. - Kansas Wesleyan scored seven early runs to propel the Coyotes into Thursday's NAIA Opening Round Championship with a 9-2 win over the Talladega College Tornadoes on Wednesday at Bossier Parish Community College.

The victory propels the Coyotes into the Shreveport Bracket championship where KWU will face host LSU-Shreveport on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. The game will be moved back to LSU-Shreveport's Pilot Field due to concerns with the pitching mound at BPCC.

KWU will bat second in the game, by virtue of coming through the winner's side of the bracket.

The Coyotes trailed 1-0 in the first inning as Talladega used a walk and a hit by pitch to set up a sacrifice fly to give the Tornadoes the lead.

Wesleyan got things going in the bottom of the second inning. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ee775cad-64ad-44b2-9ec8-61927ef4c5c4?elinkdata=10152">Tyler Favretto</a> walked, his 62nd free pass of the season which leads the NAIA to start the rally. After a fly out, <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/53fc80c8-1699-473c-bc65-dcb1cdea2caf?elinkdata=10152">Zack Beatty</a> singled, then <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/8ed82cfb-86a4-4039-84dd-4cf51cd610f4?elinkdata=10152">Adrian Villalobos</a> connected on a 2-run double to put the Coyotes ahead 2-1.

Beatty then followed with an RBI single and Villalobos added another RBI single. The score remained the same until the seventh when the Coyotes added two more. Favretto led off with a single and after Beatty walked to put two on, Villalobos came through again with a 2-run single to make it 9-1.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;–&nbsp;The National Football League announced the regular season schedule for the 2024 season on Wednesday. The Chiefs are currently slated to play in eight standalone games, including five primetime contests, with GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium playing host to six. The reigning back-to-back Super Bowl Champion Chiefs will kick off the 2024 season and hang their Super Bowl LVIII banner on the NFL’s Kickoff night against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Sept. 5 for a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game. This year’s regular season schedule features nine games vs. opponents with winning records in 2023 and seven games vs. opponents who made the 2023 playoffs. The combined 2023 record of Kansas City’s 2024 home and away opponents is 145-144-0 (.502). This year’s slate features the Chiefs in contests on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Following the NFL’s opening game, the Chiefs will host the Cincinnati Bengals in the second of two home games to open the 2024 season. The club then hits the road for two games, first in Atlanta for NBC’s Sunday Night Football and then to Los Angeles to face the Chargers in Week 4. It will mark the first AFC West matchup as the Chiefs continue their quest for a ninth-consecutive AFC West title.

<a>The Chiefs then return home to play the New Orleans Saints for the club’s first of two Monday Night Football showdowns. The Chiefs will then enjoy their Bye Week during Week 6. It is the team’s earliest Bye Week since 2016 when they had a Week 5 Bye. The Chiefs return to action Week 7 in San Francisco for a Super Bowl LVIII rematch. Week 11 is an AFC Divisional Round Game rematch in Buffalo as the Chiefs take on the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 17.
