Coyotes Head to Sterling in Search of Wins Over Warriors

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson believes Kansas' offense is starting to reach its potential.

The 7-foot-2 center had 21 points and seven rebounds, and the third-ranked Jayhawks rolled past Oklahoma State 90-66 on Tuesday night.

In front of a crowd that was maybe half full and included a significant number of Kansas fans, the Jayhawks shot 62% and never trailed.

“We were kind of due for one of these wins where we build an early lead and maintain it throughout the game," Dickinson said. "We’re very talented, and I think it was just a matter of time before we put the offense together and everybody just had a really good game at once. I think we just did a really good job of not getting complacent.”

Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 18 points and KJ Adams Jr. scored 16 for the Jayhawks (15-2, 3-1 Big 12).

Johnny Furphy matched a season high by scoring all 15 of his points in the first half for Kansas. The 6-9 freshman guard from Australia also had seven rebounds in just his third start.

“I think Johnny’s done a really good job these past couple of games when he’s been in the starting lineup just being confident and being himself," Dickinson said. "I think the four vets are just looking for him to go out there and play his game.”

Bryce Thompson led Oklahoma State with 20 points. The former Kansas guard surpassed 1,000 career points after entering the night with 986.

Javon Small, Oklahoma State's season leader with nearly 15 points per game, finished with two on 1-for-10 shooting as the Cowboys (8-9, 0-4) dropped their fourth straight.

Oklahoma State was winless in the conference, but they had taken then-No. 18 Baylor to overtime in their last home game on Jan. 6. And the Cowboys had registered home wins against the Jayhawks in 2018 and 2021 under coach Mike Boynton.

Kansas took control of this one early, shooting a blistering 67.7% from the field in the first half to take a 48-33 lead at the break.

Late in the first half,&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/AustinCEckert/status/1747452481607455044?s=20">Nicolas Timberlake dunked on Thompson</a>&nbsp;to give Kansas a 46-27 edge.

“That was a great play,” Furphy said. “I passed that ahead. I didn’t fully expect him to get up that high, but I heard Kev (McCullar) scream out, ‘Dunk that!'”

Thompson hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first half to cut Kansas' lead to 15 at the break.

The Jayhawks kept the pressure on, and their largest lead was 28 points in the second half.

"We lost to a really good team that played well tonight,” Boynton said. “That’s really the bottom line, and for us we’ve got to figure out what we want to have as the identity and the legacy of this particular team. And we need to have those answers before Saturday when we play again.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks followed their school-record low two-turnover performance against Oklahoma by producing 21 assists to 11 turnovers against the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys scored just 42 points on 32% shooting in a loss at Iowa State on Saturday, then shot 40% against Kansas.

K-State (13-4, 3-1 Big 12) are now 10-0 in overtime games under Tang, including 5-0 this season. The 5 overtime wins tie the school record for the second consecutive season and third time overall. The 10 total overtime wins are the third-most by a head coach in school history.

Down 64-59 with 1:12 remaining in the extra period, the Wildcats started their game-ending 9-0 run with a 3-pointer from freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/r-j-jones/11224">R.J. Jones</a>&nbsp;with just over a minute to play. The Wildcats needed special heroics to even get to overtime, as they trailed the Bears, 52-46, with 1:53 to play. After a timeout by Tang, Kaluma started a run of 7 consecutive points that pulled the Wildcats ahead 53-52 after 2 free throws by Perry with 34 seconds. A layup by junior&nbsp;Jayden Nunn&nbsp;gave Baylor the lead with 16 seconds to play but Perry was fouled bringing the ball up the floor just 2 seconds later. He made 1-of-2 from the line to tie the game at 54-all before Nunn's 3-pointer missed at the buzzer.

All told, K-State led for just 4 minutes and 9 seconds compared to more than 36 minutes by Baylor.The overtime win was highlighted by another stellar defensive effort by K-State, which held one of the nation's top scoring teams (86.1 ppg.) to nearly 22 points under its scoring average and its second-fewest points of the season. Baylor scored its 64 points on a season-low 32.9 percent (25-of-76) shooting, including 17.9 percent (5-of-28) from 3-point range.

Two Bears scored in double figures led by 15 from Love, who finished 6-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Senior&nbsp;Jalen Bridges&nbsp;scored 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting, while freshman&nbsp;Yves Missi&nbsp;had near double-double with 9 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior&nbsp;RayJ Dennis&nbsp;dished out a game-high 8 assists to go with 7 points and 9 rebounds.K-State finished the night shooting 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the field, including 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from 3-point range, while hitting on 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the free throw line.

Playing in its 200th&nbsp;game against a Top 10 opponent, K-State claimed its 53rd&nbsp;Top-10 victory in school history, including its fourth under Tang. The Wildcats now have 21 Top 10 wins at Bramlage Coliseum.Tang is now 3-0 all-time against his friend and former boss&nbsp;Scott Drew&nbsp;after his Wildcats swept the season series in 2022-23. This will be the only regular-season meeting between the schools with the new 14-team format, snapping a 12-year streak of playing home-and-home every year since 2011-12.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well early, as Baylor led just 6-2 at the first media timeout with 14:59 left in the first half. Junior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/arthur-kaluma/11226">Arthur Kaluma</a>&nbsp;closed the gap to 6-5 on the game's first 3-pointer out of the media timeout, but the high-scoring Bears rattled off 7 straight to push ahead 13-5.

The Wildcats got a lift from redshirt sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jerrell-colbert/11217">Jerrell Colbert</a>, as his 2 free throws started a run of 9 straight points that gave them their first lead at 14-13 with 8:22 remaining in the half.

The lead seesawed back and forth between the teams, as the Bears took advantage of second-chance points to take a 22-19 edge at the final media timeout of the half with 3:25 to play. &nbsp;Kaluma was able to nail a 3-pointer from the corner to knot the game at 24-all with 1:15 to play before halftime, but Baylor was able to close out the half with back-to-back buckets, including one at the buzzer, to take a 31-26 lead at the break. K-State narrowly out-shot Baylor, 42.1 percent to 39.4 percent, but the Bears had 22 points in the paint and held an 11-3 advantage in second-chance points.

The offenses struggled in the early going of the second half, as the teams combined for just 7 points in the first 6-plus minutes, as Baylor led 33-31 at the 13:35 mark. 

After the Bears connected on their first field goal of the second half – a 3-pointer from&nbsp;Langston Love&nbsp;from the corner at the 12:22 mark – to go ahead 37-34, redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/dorian-finister/11218">Dorian Finister</a>&nbsp;gave the Wildcats a 38-37 lead on back-to-back baskets to force a timeout by head coach&nbsp;Scott Drew&nbsp;at the 11:38 mark.

The Bears were able to record consecutive baskets for the first time in the half to push ahead 41-38 with 10:14 to play, but the Wildcats were able to score 7 of the next 8 points, including a 3-pointer from senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/tylor-perry/11222">Tylor Perry</a>, to go ahead 45-42 and force a timeout by Drew with 8:03 remaining.

The timeout seemed to be exactly what Baylor needed, as the Bears used a 10-1 run to go ahead 52-46 right before a K-State timeout with 1:53 to play. The Wildcats responded with 7 straight out of the timeout, including a pair of free throws by Perry to push ahead 53-52 with 34 seconds. Junior&nbsp;Jayden Nunn's&nbsp;layup with 16 seconds gave the lead back to Baylor before Perry split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 54-all with 14 seconds. Nunn's 3-pointer at the buzzer just missed.The Bears' lethal 3-point attack got going to open the extra period with consecutive triples from senior&nbsp;RayJ Dennis&nbsp;and Love while the Wildcats countered with a 3-pointer from junior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/cam-carter/11216">Cam Carter</a>&nbsp;and a layup from senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/will-mcnair-jr-/11541">Will McNair Jr.</a>&nbsp;to close the deficit to 60-59 with 2:25 to play.Layups by Love and Dennis gave Baylor a 64-59 lead with 1:12 remaining before the final 9-0 sequence highlighted by the 4-point play by Kaluma with 20 seconds to play.

"Opening statement…"Well, first of all, God is good and I'm so thankful that I get to do this at this place with these guys. I'm so proud of them, they could have easily let the Texas Tech loss beat us twice. But they were able to put it in a box and put it away and focus on preparation and on another one-game season. I knew RJ [Jones] was going to play well, I didn't know he was gonna hit the big three. But I knew he would play well because of his preparation and practice. He was the scout team point guard and he volunteered to do it, Jerrell [Colbert] volunteered to do scout team as well. Guys are really taking ownership of the team and really invest more into it and we're figuring out ways just to get better, a little bit better every day. 

I could brag about all of these guys.But what I want to say is that when I was driving in it was 6 degrees and there were people in the parking lot like workers, helping park and I'm thinking man, 6 degrees, they're out there working in that. There were students lined up at 2:30 p.m. I told the guys 'when people make this kind of sacrifice, they deserve a special kind of effort to allow us to have this opportunity and we have to reward them with an effort that's worthy of their sacrifice.' Whether we had won this game or not, I was really proud of our guys because of the effort that they gave, the togetherness that they showed that I felt honored our fans who were unbelievable tonight, and we don't win that game without them.

 Normally homecourt advantages are plus 10 and I think they were plus 15 to us so thank you to everyone who helped us get this dub. I was really proud of the guys who gave an effort that honored the people in our community who give us the opportunity to play this game.

"On what the team is doing right in overtime and finding ways to win…"Maturity. Some older guys believe and then we work on it every day. Every single day. We work on 5-to-grind every day. So, it's something our guys take pride in.

"What has allowed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jerrell-colbert/11217">Jerrell Colbert</a>&nbsp;to help out these last couple games…"I said maturity, right? And then what I was meaning is that those guys need to stop thinking about themselves and what they were going through and start thinking about the team and what they could contribute to the team that had nothing to do with playing time. And I think Jerrell and I know RJ [Jones], both of those guys have, they made some big strides maturity wise and understanding that this is a team thing, and they just have to be ready.

Their numbers will get called at some point in time and I mean, he's [Jerrell] been great at practice. You can see it right? You can see his approach, you can see his preparation, the extra work that he's putting in, just all those things and so as a coach when you see that, and you see that he's doing it with a certain joy. 

It's not like I'm doing this to try and get on the court but doing it because he loves his teammates and he wants his team to be better, but then you feel comfortable getting them in there. And so, I mean he's earned it. He's earned it. 

And we knew from the last game that we couldn't have Will [McNair] play 37, 36 minutes, whatever it was right? And so, we needed somebody to step up and Jerrell did that this week for us and he's done it like the last couple of weeks where he's really kind of earned more trust.

"On what is making the defense so special at this point of the season…"The attention to detail. Coach U [<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/ulric-maligi/2354">Ulric Maligi</a>], Coach Marco [Borne], Coach 'Reem [<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/jareem-dowling/2355">Jareem Dowling</a>], they handle our defense.

We've like pinpointed some things that we got to get better at, and the guys have been really intentional about what we're doing in practice and paying attention to details."

K-State concludes its homestand on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats play host to Oklahoma State (8-9, 0-4 Big 12) at 5 p.m., CT. The game is sold out.

🏀 MBB: Late 9-0 run propels K-State past Baylor in overtime

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;For the fourth time in her career and second time this season, K-State center Ayoka Lee has earned Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week honors by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Lee was one of five selected for the weekly honor.

In addition to this honor, Lee previously earned USBWA/Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week honors on Jan. 4, 2022, Jan. 25, 2022 and Nov. 21, 2023.

Lee continued her strong play in leading the Wildcats to their longest winning streak since the 2008-09 season, including its second win over an Associated Press top-10 foe. During the week, Lee achieved a pair of career milestones.

For the week, Lee averaged 20.0 points on a .667 field goal percentage, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 blocks, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assists in 31.5 minutes per game. She led the Big 12 in blocks per game, second in field goal percentage, fifth in scoring and ninth in rebounding.

Against Oklahoma on Jan. 10, Lee tallied 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting including 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the fourth quarter to seal K-State's win. The product of Byron, Minnesota, added six rebounds, five blocks, two steals and an assist.

This was Lee's 19th career game with five or more blocked shots and her third this season.

Against 10th-ranked Texas, Lee notched 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and a 5-of-5 effort from the free throw line, 10 rebounds, four blocks, a steal and an assist. With her 21 points, Lee became the fourth player in program history to score 2,000 or more career points. She is the only player in school history and the third in Big 12 history with 2,000 or more points, 1,000 or more rebounds and 275 or more blocked shots.

With her four blocked shots against the Longhorns, Lee established a new school record for career blocked shots with 284 and surpassing the previous record of 282 held by Breanna Lewis (2013-17). Lee's total of 284 ranks ninth in Big 12 history.

She registered the 55th double-double of her career to move into fifth in Big 12 history for career double-doubles.

This season, Lee is averaging 19.78 points on a career-high .677 field goal percentage, 8.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game in 24.9 minutes per game. She ranks third in the nation in field goals made (149), second in the nation in field goal percentage, sixth in the nation for total blocks (49) and seventh in the country for total points scored (356).

Bile helped the Coyotes post a 2-0 record last week with victories at York and at home against Avila. KWU has won eight straight heading into a pivotal week with games at Sterling and at home against Oklahoma Wesleyan.

He was a key player in limiting the chances of both teams in the post. He made his presence felt defensively in different ways in each game. Against York, he had four steals in the game and one block. Against Avila, where the Eagles tried to score in the post more, he had five blocks and a steal as KWU came away with the win.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Jaykwon Walton and Jahvon Quinerly scored 23 points apiece to lead No. 13 Memphis past Wichita State 112-86 on Sunday for its tenth consecutive win.

Walton, who played for Wichita State last season, and Quinerly were two of six players to finish in double-digit scoring for Memphis (15-2, 4-0 American Athletic Conference).

The Tigers recorded their most points this season, set a program record with 19 three-pointers and shot a season-high 65% from the floor. It was the first time since 1986 they have scored more than 100 points in back-to-back games.

“My biggest takeaway was the 19 3s we made as a team,” Quinerly said. “We shot the ball really well. … To be able to come out here on the road and shoot 19 3s was huge.”

Colby Rogers had 20 points to lead Wichita State (8-8, 0-3), which suffered its first loss of the season when scoring more than 80 points.

The Tigers held a 49-46 lead at halftime, with both teams shooting 60% from the floor. Wichita State tied the game early after the break, but Memphis erupted for 63 second-half points.

"We couldn’t get caught up in a shootout, and we did,” Wichita State coach Paul Mills said. “We are not the kind of team that can win those games.”

The American's leading scorer, Memphis' David Jones, was held to just two points in the first half, but the Shockers struggled to contain him in the second half. Jones finished with 19 points.

Nae’Qwan Tomlin scored 14, Nick Jourdain added 12 and Malcolm Dandridge had 10 for the Tigers, whose last loss came on Dec. 2. They are off to their best start since the 2007-08 season, when they began 17-0.

“All can say is wow, I was just as shocked as everybody else,” Memphis coach Penny Hardaway said. “We finally made some 3s and when they came, they came in bunches and that pushed the game away."

Harlond Beverly scored 17 points and Dalen Ridgnal added 15 for Wichita State.

Memphis: After being limited in the first half, Jones had 10 points in the opening three minutes of the second, which sparked a dominant half for the Tigers. Memphis scored 31 points off 18 Wichita State turnovers.

Wichita State: The Shockers got off to a hot start, hitting 8 of 9 to open the game, and ended the half trailing by three. Wichita State shot the ball well in the first half but struggled to continue the pace after the break.

Tomlin made his return to the Sunflower State for the first time since being&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-state-wildcats-30904b1f25692c09947ac7fcb57fc129">dismissed from Kansas State</a>&nbsp;on Dec. 6, nearly one month after his arrest for disorderly conduct. Tomlin, who was was arrested following a bar fight in October, committed to Memphis on Dec. 12 and has appeared in six games for the Tigers.

Memphis: Hosts South Florida on Thursday.

Wichita State: Travels to Boca Raton to face Florida Atlantic on Thursday for the first conference meeting between the two schools.

Former Wildcat shines for Memphis in win over Wichita State

The start of Saturday's game was not what Kansas Wesleyan head coach&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ce7f4615-a4c8-4e2a-ae97-bf63a2af6a33?elinkdata=3656" target="_blank">Anthony Monson</a>&nbsp;was looking for.

The Coyotes overcame an 11-point first-half deficit and pulled away in the second half to cruise to a 90-71 win over the Avila Eagles inside Mabee Arena.

Monson wasn't exactly pleased with his team's early first half efforts. Shots weren't falling and the defense was struggling.

"Anytime you look and see we are struggling that's because we're not getting stops," Monson said. "When we get to trading buckets back and forth we're not good at that. When we start shooting quick and we start settling for bad shots. If you're not hitting shots, then you find yourself down like we did tonight."

Trailing 28-17 with 8:15 left in the first, the Coyotes made their move. Six straight by the Coyotes capped by&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/52a3db2b-ff86-4199-b892-367741a38cb2?elinkdata=3656" target="_blank">Alex Littlejohn's</a>&nbsp;steal and bucket got it to a five-point difference with 6:49 to go.

Avila pushed it back out to an eight-point difference, but the Coyotes scored eight of the next nine, cutting it to a 1-point difference at 34-33 on a 3-pointer by&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/2825b090-2a91-4d4e-a7f9-a76ac1b92cf8?elinkdata=3656" target="_blank">Izaiah Hale</a>&nbsp;with 3:54 left in the half.

The Coyotes controlled the second half, thanks in part to an outstanding effort from Hale.

Hale poured in 18 of his career high 27 points, going 7 of 9 from the field and 4 of 5 from long range in the second half, helping the Coyotes shoot 62.5 percent in the second half (15 of 24).

Monson pointed out that he knew Hale was capable of a big night.

"I told coach (Jordan) Murdock he's going to have a night where he goes for like 30 right after Christmas break and it was great to see him do that," Monson said. "We've seen him hit shots time and time again in the preseason and practice. He can really shoot it, he just got going tonight. Once he gets going he's really tough."I think he did a really good job of not forcing anything even though he was hot and he was on. He still lets the game come to him and he made the plays that we needed to. He's a big reason why we got up to that lead and were able to maintain it."

Hale concurred, pointing out that Wesleyan's defense allowed the offense to get going and into a flow.

"Whenever we started getting some more stops, that really helped us because we like to get some momentum and some flow going," he said.

Hale put the Coyotes up 17 with 15:37 to go in the game on an alley-oop from&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/49a5f4ee-a93d-4809-adcc-9348ce5d2984?elinkdata=3656" target="_blank">Jun Murdock</a>.

"I went for the spin and I threw it to Jun. I knew Jun was going to look out for me, I knew he was going to throw it so I just jumped for it," Hale said. "While I was on the rim I was pointing at Jun and telling him good pass."

Avila got back within 11 with 8:03 left but the Coyotes slammed the door closed with a 9-0 run capped by&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/702ab6c8-a348-487d-8e2d-8ceac7c1142c?elinkdata=3656" target="_blank">Easton Hunter's</a>&nbsp;triple with 5:55 left that put KWU up 20 at 78-58.

Murdock had 21 to go along with six assists. Coyotes cruise to eighth straight win downing Eagles 90-71

Trailing Avila 57-53 with just over three minutes left in the game the Coyotes turned to three of their veterans to save the day.&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/0f12e1c1-014c-4044-8857-501850e27950?elinkdata=3632" target="_blank">Jill Stephens</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d87d8722-c1be-4c27-9150-87ffc3ee78c5?elinkdata=3632" target="_blank">LaMyah Ricks</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/b369c197-5a39-4e67-9c7d-a3d10d6ea627?elinkdata=3632" target="_blank">Angel Lee</a>&nbsp;did not disappoint.

The trio combined for the game's final nine points as KWU rallied for a 62-57 Kansas Conference victory over Saturday afternoon inside Mabee Arena. The Coyotes improved to 8-8 and are 6-4 in the conference; Avila fell to 5-11 and 4-6.

Lee struck first completing a three-point play with 2:53 left that narrowed the deficit to 56-55. After two empty KWU possessions Stephens made four consecutive free throws - the first two after a technical foul was called on an Avila player with 1:26 remaining that gave the Coyotes a 58-57 lead. The last two came with 50.6 seconds left and made it 60-57.

After Avila missed a shot Ricks, KWU's senior point guard, drove the lane with the shot clock about to expire and scored on a well-guarded layup with 4.8 seconds remaining for the final points.

"It's always going to be a team win but I want the ball in (Ricks and Stephens) hand," Showman said. "They've done it time and time again and today is no different."

"I just knew we needed to get a bucket any way possible," Ricks said. "I hadn't been having a great game but I just kind of kept believing in myself. My teammates pushed me and that's the reason why that ball went in."

Stephens said her free throws were a matter of focusing on the moment. She also made three free throws with 8:38 left in the game after being fouled on a 3-point shot attempt.

"Growing up I went to the gym with my parents a lot and practiced free throws. Free throws have always been a strong suit of mine," she said. "I always think one in a row and not overlooking each basket. Just take it one step at a time."

Stephens finished with 12 points and five rebounds while Ricks had nine points and seven rebounds. Lee had six points.

The Coyotes appeared to be in control at halftime leading 40-31 after shooting 53.8 percent from the field (14 of 26).&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ec5a3739-0fdf-4166-80e1-862c21b3128b?elinkdata=3632" target="_blank">Adriana DiPrima</a>&nbsp;scored all 12 of her points in the second quarter that included three 3-pointers and&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/22193453-9d91-4bc3-890e-9fcef36972f6?elinkdata=3632" target="_blank">Alexis Dixon</a>&nbsp;scored all nine of her points the first half.

"We are having a different conversation after the game in the locker room if those two didn't have their performances in the first half," Showman said. "They made big big shots, big big plays.

"We've been waiting for AD to do that. I know she's been frustrated but she stuck with it. And she let that first one fly and it rattled in and then boom, boom, boom. It's just a confidence builder."

The second half was a different story though. KWU was as icy as the weather outside going 5 of 27 (18.5 percent) from the field the final 20 minutes, making just one field goal in the third quarter. The Coyotes led 44-36 with 6:14 left in quarter but Avila closed on a 14-2 surge and led 50-46 entering the final eight minutes.

Showman credited Avila for slowing the Coyotes' offense.

"I thought they put us in some positions defensively where we struggled a little bit and they hit some shots," he said. "We went with some different lineups and so credit them. It wasn't perfect but at the end of the day we made just enough plays and found a way to win."

"We stuck together, no one turned on each other," Stephens said. "We had good team energy, the bench energy was great, our team chemistry was good. We played together and we shared the ball."

"I think we played really well together, everybody was scoring," Ricks said. "We didn't have one person score all of our buckets. Our bench scored a lot of points for us and that really helped."

Marlie Wright led Avila with 13 points while Hannah Smith had 12. The Eagles shot 43 percent for the game (24 of 56).

Wesleyan travels to Sterling on Wednesday for a game against the Warriors starting at 6 p.m. inside the Gleason Center. Sterling lost to Friends 79-75 Saturday in Wichita and is 7-9, 4-6 in the conference.

The reigning league MVP found Rashee Rice eight times for 130 yards and a touchdown in the wild-card playoff game, and Isiah Pacheco added 89 yards rushing and another score, sending the Chiefs (12-6) past the Dolphins for the first time in four postseason meetings.

Harrison Butker added four field goals for the defending Super Bowl champs.

The injury-depleted Dolphins (11-7) looked nothing like the dynamic offense that led the league in yards during the regular season. Tua Tagovailoa was pressured relentlessly by the NFL's second-ranked defense, wide receiver Tyreek Hill had a 53-yard TD catch but was otherwise shut down in his return to Kansas City, and the Dolphins finished with just 264 yards in all.

That included pop star Taylor Swift, who once again turned up to see her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

She at least got to watch from an enclosed suite. Most fans huddled outside in parkas, ski goggles and snow pants, and players huddled around heaters on the sidelines as if they were an oasis in the cold. The National Weather Service issued a warning for what it called “dangerously cold” weather that had blanketed the Midwest.

In fact, the cold may have made Mahomes’ helmet brittle enough that a hit in the third quarter knocked a chunk of the plastic shell from it. Once officials saw the fist-sized hole, they made Mahomes get a backup helmet from the bench.

The weather didn’t seem to bother Hill, who was playing in Kansas City for the first time since his old team traded him to Miami two years ago. The league’s leading receiver warmed up in a short-sleeved shirt, then proceeded to scorch the stout Chiefs defense and All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie for a his long touchdown reception midway through the first half.

But the Dolphins’ offense otherwise struggled, just as it did in a 21-14 loss to the Chiefs in their November game in Germany.

Kansas City was far more efficient, scoring on four of its six first-half drives. Mahomes capped the first with a TD toss to Rice, and while ensuing drives kept fizzling in the red zone, Butker added a trio of field goals as Kansas City took a 16-3 lead into the break.

The Chiefs added another field goal in the third quarter, but it was still a two-possession game early in the fourth when the Dolphins appeared to force another field goal. But a late flag on Christian Wilkins for roughing the passer on third down gave Kansas City a fresh set of downs, and Pacheco plowed into the end zone moments later to give the Chiefs a 26-7 lead.

The Dolphins finally put together a sustained drive afterward, but by that point it was much too late. And when they failed to convert on fourth down, they were headed to their 11th straight loss when the game-time temp is 40 degrees or less.
