Phillip Allen "Phil" Lorson, 73, of Hope, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 3, 2025.Born in Abilene, Kansas, Phil was the son of Theresa (Kandt) and Paul Lorson. 

He built a life rooted in hard work and community, spending his career as a dedicated grain and livestock farmer. He also owned and operated Lorson Electric, serving neighbors and friends with integrity and skill.

On June 17, 1972, Phil married the love of his life, Debra Glassman, in Hays, Kansas. Together, they raised a family grounded in faith, kindness, and resilience.

Phil is survived by his children, Kelly Coup (Justin) of Hope; Kerry Ditto (Darren) of Abilene; and Chad Lorson (Heather Sill) of Hope. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren—Tatum Ditto, Reagan Burns (Ethan), Spencer Coup, Breken Coup, Brighton Lorson, Kierstyn Coup, Quincy Coup, Brixton Lorson, and Bristol Lorson—and great-grandfather to Maverick.He is also survived by his brothers, Eric Lorson of Salina and Barry Lorson of Hope; and five sisters: Rita Sutcliffe (Joseph) of Firestone, Colorado; Sheila Mai (Lanny) and Denise Sageser (Rex), both of Wichita; Diana Okruhlik (Dennis) of Topeka; and Maria Harmon (Clyde) of Lenexa.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Debra.In accordance with his wishes, cremation was chosen. The family will hold a private Memorial Mass in his honor.

A public Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, August 22 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Phillip Catholic Hall in Hope, Kansas.

Phillip Allen "Phil" Lorson

Ronald B. Freed, 91, peacefully passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2025, with family by his side at The Cedars, McPherson.

He was born on May 12, 1934, in Ames, Oklahoma, the son of B Leon Freed and Myrtle (Moyers) Freed. He attended elementary school in Enid, Oklahoma, and graduated from Homestead High School in 1952. During his time in Homestead, Ron was active in Boy Scouts, serving in Troop 87 and earning his Eagle Scout Rank. He was especially proud that his troop was recognized as the #1 troop in the nation for having the highest number of Eagle Scouts.

Later in 1952, Ron continued his education at McPherson College, where he graduated in 1957 with a degree in Business Administration. While at McPherson, he was proud to be a member of the Championship Football Team of 1952. He also was a Scout Leader of Troop 130.

On April 3, 1955, Ron was united in marriage to Kathryn G Kendall in McPherson, Kansas. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Cheryl. Ron and Kathryn were married for 58 years before her passing in 2013.

Throughout his career, Ron worked in accounting and bookkeeping and also spent time as a truck driver for various businesses and individuals. In addition, he was well known for his photography skills and was often invited to photograph weddings, high school seniors, and family events. He especially enjoyed capturing nature scenes at Kanopolis State Park, Maxwell Wildlife Refuge &nbsp;and Cheney Reservoir.

Ron served faithfully as the volunteer bookkeeper for 53 years at the First Church of the Brethren, Wichita. Growing up on the family farm in Oklahoma, he developed a strong work ethic from a young age, helping with chores and operating farm equipment. His love for farming stayed with him throughout his life, and he continued to help with wheat harvests for over 60 years.

After moving back to McPherson in 2013, Ron attended McPherson Church of the Brethren.&nbsp; He was a lifetime member of the National Eagle Association and Friends of Maxwell.

Ron is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Ted) Hammarlund of McPherson, KS; two grandsons, Daniel Hammarlund of Derby, KS and Scott Hammarlund of Berthoud, CO; a brother, Merlin (Nancy) Freed of Vici, OK; sisters-in-law, Barbara Freed of Okeene, OK, Judy Freed of Delaware, OH, and Lucy Cary of Austin, TX; an “adopted” daughter, Beth Ann Kendall Hanning; friend and companion, Illa Flax; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brothers, Jim Freed and Bob Freed.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 15, 2025, at the McPherson Church of the Brethren with Rev. Kathryn Whitacre and Rev. Chris Whitacre officiating.&nbsp; The final resting place will be in Ames, Oklahoma.

Glenda Ruth Anderson

Joan Smith, age 89, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday, August 1, 2025, in Salina, Kansas.

Joan was born September 18, 1935 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, to John and Beatrice Bricker. She spent her early years in Waynesboro, PA where she enjoyed carrying around her pet duck and kitty, Tommy. She worked as a cashier at a 5 and 10 store, until she met the love of her life, Alvey Smith, at a roller-skating rink. Alvey stated, “We’ve been going in circles ever since.” They married on March 27, 1954. Nearly two years later, they were blessed and delighted to welcome their beloved first daughter, Teresa.

In Maryland, 1962, while attending a Baptist church, Joan and Alvey accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior. Soon after, they were blessed with their second daughter, Tina. Joan found joy teaching a young children’s Sunday School class and singing in the church choir. She also served as secretary for her husband’s personal drywall business, “Lord &amp; Smith.”

Joan loved the ocean and often said it was her favorite place to relax. She had a green thumb, loved her flower garden and enjoyed feeding and watching birds outside. Her hobbies included embroidery, crocheting, plastic canvas, crafts and puzzles. She earned the nickname “Spunky” in her ladies’ Maryland Duckpin Bowling League and later bowled with Alvey in a senior league in Indiana. With every strike made, Joan would cheerfully exclaim, “Praise the Lord!”

Joan loved playing board games with family, camping and attending gospel hymn-sings with her husband, Alvey. She was frugal and known as the “Coupon Queen.”

Joan was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, known for decorating a beautiful, warm and inviting home—especially during Christmas. Joan enjoyed attending the Fall annual “Covered Bridge Festival” in Indiana with her daughter Tina and her granddaughters. Alvey often said he had never known two women closer than Joan and their daughter Tina, they were best of friends.

At 88, Joan and Alvey enjoyed the adventure of moving to Kansas to live with their daughter Tina and son-in-law (Pastor) Terry (whom Joan adored like their own son). There, Joan and Alvey shared their remaining years together, side by side.

As Joan’s earthly journey neared the end, Alvey reminded her of the Heavenly joys ahead—meeting her Savior and reuniting with their daughter Teresa. Some of Joan’s last words were for her “sweetie” Alvey to enjoy his favorite lunch, followed by several heartfelt statements of, “I love you” to him and the family. Alvey sat by Joan’s side holding her hand for over 20 hours during her hours of transitioning from this earthly home—a precious testament to their love.

Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 71 years, Alvey Smith; daughter Tina Danford (Terry); six grandchildren: James (Alexis), Sheilah (Russell), Krista (Stevie), HeatherJoy, Joshua (Emma), and Melody; and eight great-grandchildren: Bryant, Rebecca, Evan, Ava, Abigail, Sylvina, Harrison, and Gawayn.

Joan will be remembered as a faithful wife, loving mother, devoted grandma (Nana), great-grandma, a true friend and prayer warrior who loved her LORD. Her wit, joyful spirit, and vibrant presence will be deeply missed.

The visitation will be 1:15 p.m. Thursday August 7, 2025, at Faith Baptist Church, 639 Max Ave., Salina KS. Followed by the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Faith Baptist Church, 639. Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery 2020 E Iron Ave., Salina KS.

After the burial a reception will be had at Faith Baptist Church.

Joan Smith

Lowell Dean Cornwell, longtime resident and beloved member of the Osborne, Kansas community, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025. He was 92 years old.

Born in 1933 in Osborne, Kansas, Lowell was the son of Marie Sophia Hachmeister Cornwell and Guy Diment Cornwell. He graduated from Osborne High School in 1951 and went on to attend Fort Hays State University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1955. During his time at Fort Hays, Lowell stood out not only in academics but also in athletics, fraternity life, and campus organizations.

In 1954, Lowell married the love of his life, Donna Jean Miller of Otis, Kansas. The couple recently celebrated an extraordinary 70 years of marriage —a testament to their deep and enduring partnership.

Driven by a passion for animal care and service, Lowell continued his education at Kansas State University, where he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1959. He returned to his hometown of Osborne to open a veterinary practice, which he operated with dedication for 50 years. His work in both large and small animal medicine left a lasting impact on countless families, farmers, and pet owners across the region.

Lowell was deeply involved in the Osborne community beyond his profession. He served on both the local school board and the Osborne Memorial Hospital board for many years, contributing his leadership and care. He was also a committed member of the Masons and Shriners.

A man of many passions, Lowell was an avid fisherman, hunter, steward of the land and a proud Kansas State Wildcat fan. In his retirement, he found joy in simpler pleasures — driving around town in his ranger, sharing coffee and stories with friends at the Hideout, and cherishing time with his family.

Lowell will be remembered for his sharp wit, generous spirit, steady presence, and his unwavering dedication to the people and animals of Osborne.

Lowell is survived by his wife Donna; sister-in-law Pat Brock of Clinton, Missouri; daughter Dana of Overland Park, Kansas; son Dean and wife Kathy of Frisco, Texas; son Chris of Kansas City, Missouri; grandchildren Adam and wife Kayla of Lake Dallas, Texas; Sam Koehn of Dallas, Texas; and Gabriel of McKinney, Texas, as well as numerous extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 7th at 10:00 a.m. at the United Christian Church in Osborne, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the United Christian Church, Osborne Memorial Hospital, or Shriners Children's Hospital.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to friends and relatives for the many cards, phone calls, and kind words of comfort during this time.

He graduated from Osborne High School in 1951 and went on to attend Fort Hays State University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1955. During his time at Fort Hays, Lowell stood out not only in academics but also in athletics, fraternity life, and campus organizations.In 1954, Lowell married the love of his life, Donna Jean Miller of Otis, Kansas. The couple recently celebrated an extraordinary 70 years of marriage —a testament to their deep and enduring partnership.Driven by a passion for animal care and service, Lowell continued his education at Kansas State University, where he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1959. He returned to his hometown of Osborne to open a veterinary practice, which he operated with dedication for 50 years. His work in both large and small animal medicine left a lasting impact on countless families, farmers, and pet owners across the region.Lowell was deeply involved in the Osborne community beyond his profession. He served on both the local school board and the Osborne Memorial Hospital board for many years, contributing his leadership and care. He was also a committed member of the Masons and Shriners.A man of many passions, Lowell was an avid fisherman, hunter, steward of the land and a proud Kansas State Wildcat fan. Berniece A. Shank passed peacefully to her Father in Heaven on July 25, 2025. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and highly skilled RN.

She was born on a farm near Ogallah, Kansas September 4, 1933, to her parents William and Frances Thesing along with one sister and three brothers.

Her father passed away from blood poisoning when she was only 4 years old and a day later her mother gave birth to her brother Bill. Her Mother Frances nearly died from pneumonia during the pregnancy and remained in the hospital for 75 days.

Relatives from Graham County, the Goeverts stepped up to the plate, at the request of Frances and promised to raise the children and keep the family together. Frances moved her family to WaKeeney, Kansas after 3 years of recovery and aid from the Goevert family.

Berniece attended Trego County High School in WaKeeney and received a full music scholarship from Marymount College in Salina, Kansas. She was a rudimental snare drummer but chose a path of medical service after entering Marymount College. She graduated from Marymount College with a BS degree in Nursing and shortly after was married to Robert E. Shank, Sr. They raised 4 sons on a farm north of Salina, Kansas. Berniece truly enjoyed her four sons always teaching them to work hard and do their best.

Berniece continued helping others through her nursing vocation her entire life. She was a travel Hospice nurse for children during the last years of her career.She loved teaching and playing the piano. She taught her sons the joy of music and they all participated in high school Band.

Berniece was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW for 50 years.

She loved the “Lord” with all her heart and was a true prayer warrior.

Survivors include three sons: David R. Shank (Lincoln, Nebraska), Mark E. Shank (Lisa, Ft. Scott, Kansas.), and Doug W. Shank (Ann, Mandeville, Louisiana).

Rosalind “Kay” (Gates) Shortt, age 82, entered into rest on Saturday, August 02, 2025, at her home in Concordia, Kansas. She was born on July 03, 1943, at Beloit Hospital, Beloit, Kansas to Raymond Edmond and Marjorie Irene (Rexroat) Gates.

Kay was a proud graduate of Downs High School where she was president of Kayettes,&nbsp;a cheerleader and Homecoming Queen. She completed many art classes&nbsp;throughout her life.

Kay married Larry Russell Getty on June 3, 1962, and they later divorced. She was later&nbsp;remarried to Larry Shortt on March 26, 2009.

She spent many years working for medical offices as a dental assistant, physician's&nbsp;assistant, and receptionist. She later worked as an administrative assistant in the loan department of Fidelity Savings before her retirement.

Kay was a talented painter, in both watercolors and oils. She passed this artistic gift to granddaughter Sierra, and great-granddaughter, Emrie. She also loved recreating recipes from cooking shows she enjoyed. She enjoyed reading. However, her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren, who loved sharing laughter, shopping outings, and funny stories of their childhoods with her.

Kay is survived by her daughter, Lisa and husband Steve Garner of Derby, KS. Her treasured sister and caretaker, Pat and husband Bob Burns of Concordia, KS. Four grandchildren, Sierra McRae, Erin McRae, husband Michael Zammit and grandson, Evan Garner, all of Wichita. Great-granddaughter Emrie Edwards of Wichita. Nephew Andy Burns and wife Ashley of Moyock, NC, and their sons Eli, Jace and Liam. Countless beloved cousins and dear friends, Carol Trexler and Lari McCullough. Her faithful feline companion, Mindy, provided comfort to her until the end.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Marjorie Gates and her husband, Larry&nbsp;Shortt.

Visitation will be held before service time Friday, August 08, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. ~ 10:30 a.m. at the Concordia Wesleyan Church, Concordia, Kansas.

Rosalind “Kay” (Gates) Shortt

Ida Mae Dlabal, 104, passed on to her eternal resting place, Monday, August 4, 2025, in Ellsworth, KS. She was born on December 29, 1920, to Edward and Josephine (Svoboda) Vlcek in Ellsworth, KS. She graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1938. On January 13, 1942, she was united in marriage to Stephen S. Dlabal Sr. Ida and Steve made their home on the family farm outside Wilson, KS. They welcomed two sons, Stephen S. Dlabal Jr. in 1951 and James Dlabal in 1959.

In her early adult years, Ida attended beauty school and was a hair stylist in Ellsworth. She then spent much of her time being a homemaker, farm wife and mother. In 1969, she joined Wilson Jr./Sr. High School as head cook and quickly became one of the favorite “lunch ladies.” A new Wilson school was built in 1998, where Ida was head cook for the K-12 building. She arrived early to work every day to make fresh dough for homemade bread and cinnamon rolls. Making sure no one was hungry was her top priority. Ida served up lots of warm meals alongside compassion, with a dash of humor, to students and staff until she retired in 2012 at the age of 91.

Ida was also a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. She was affectionately called Grammy by all her family (and even those unrelated to her). She loved her family fiercely and would do anything for them. She also knew where they all were, what they were doing, and what was happening on the farm at all times. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren could often be found at her house enjoying a sweet treat or playing cards with her.

Ida lived independently herself till she was almost 104, staying active and busy, even after her retirement. She kept baking, donating cinnamon rolls for the local blood drive and other events. She also could be found in her rocking chair embroidering many items for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When she wanted to relax, she enjoyed watching various sports on TV.

Ida will be remembered for her quick wit, humor and bringing a smile to all those she encountered. She also was deeply committed to her Catholic faith and was instrumental in bringing others to join the church.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Josephine Vlcek, husband Stephen S. Dlabal Sr., sister Dorothy Manzo, brother James Vlcek, and daughter-in-law Rosemary Dlabal. Her legacy will live on in those still living: son Stephen Dlabal Jr. (Carmel), son James Dlabal, grandchildren: Corey Dlabal (Jennifer), Darwin Dlabal (Sarah), Melanie Elizondo (Tony), Stephanie Rathbun (Austin), Joshua Dlabal (Brenna), Justine Dlabal, Aaron Dlabal (Hannah), Ethan Dlabal (Laura), and 15 great-grandchildren.

Otto L. Hackerott was 93 when he passed away on June 27, 2025, at Parkview Care Center in Osborne, KS. Otto was born on August 21, 1931, in Rooks County, KS. His parents were Otto R. and Belle (Mitchell) Hackerott.

Otto attended grade school in Osborne County, KS; started high school in Woodston, KS and graduated from high school in Alton, KS.

Otto went to work with his father in Osborne County learning to operate heavy equipment. In 1951 Otto reported for duty to the United States Air Force. During the next four years he was a Staff Sergeant serving in Germany. Otto then served in the Air Force Reserves until 1959 when he was honorably discharged. Otto returned to operating heavy dirt moving equipment making roads, bridges and dams in Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma.

Otto is survived by sister, Lillie Bristol-Morrill of Portis, KS; niece, Kathy (Steve) Mikkelson of Overbrook, KS; nephew, Mike (Jeanne) Bristol of Osborne, KS; nephew, Eric (Cathy) Bristol of Manhattan, KS; niece, Tina (Rich) Hageman of Norton, KS; nephew, Anthony Hackerott of Osborne, KS; sister-in-law, Eleanor Hackerott of Osborne, KS, niece, Gail (Mark) Miller of Fort Gibson, OK and survived further by other relatives and friends.

Otto was preceded in death by his parents, Otto R. and Belle Hackerott; brother, Jimmy Hackerott; brother, Kenneth Hackerott; nephew, Brian R. Hackerott; and nephew, Daniel Hackerott.

His parents were Otto R. and Belle (Mitchell) Hackerott.Otto attended grade school in Osborne County, KS; started high school in Woodston, KS and graduated from high school in Alton, KS.Otto went to work with his father in Osborne County learning to operate heavy equipment. In 1951 Otto reported for duty to the United States Air Force. During the next four years he was a Staff Sergeant serving in Germany. Otto then served in the Air Force Reserves until 1959 when he was honorably discharged. Otto L. Hackerott 

Don A. Johnson, 87, of Salina, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2025, at Salina Regional Health Center following a sudden illness. A lifelong resident of Saline County, Don was still working on his beloved farm near Kipp just days before his passing. Even in his final days, he remained fiercely independent and left this life on his own terms, surrounded by family.

Don was born on June 13, 1938, on the family farm to Albert and Elsie Johnson. He was the youngest of three brothers and developed a deep connection to the land from a young age. While he fondly remembered milking cows and tending to the family's many chickens as a boy, he never hesitated to remind others that he happily left those particular chores behind in adulthood.

He attended Kipp his entire school life graduating in 1956. Don was very active in extracurricular activities, in particular including music and sports. His love of baseball and basketball continued throughout his life and as he was a passionate fan of the Kansas Jayhawk basketball and Kansas City Royals. In fact, he attended a Royals game as recently as June. He attended Kansas Wesleyan for one year, during which the Dean asked him to room with Hungarian refugee Andrea Toth, who would go on to become a lifelong friend. After his first year at Wesleyan, he decided to return to the farm full-time.

Don met the love of his life, Margie Newman, in high school, and they were married on December 12, 1959. Their partnership spanned 62 years until Margie’s passing, a testament to their devotion through both triumphs and trials.

In earlier years, Don and Margie raised Basset Hounds and were active members of the Salina Kennel Club, where they formed many cherished friendships. Don was a lifelong outdoorsman who loved training coyote hounds and bird dogs, spending countless days hunting quail and pheasant or fishing his favorite spots.

Farming was not just Don’s livelihood; it was his identity. He and Margie weathered the unpredictable nature of farm life, including the destruction of their home by a tornado and hailstorm in 1969. Retirement was never in Don’s vocabulary; he remained committed to the farm and the community that shaped him.

Don’s greatest passion over the past 50 years was his Angus cattle. What began in the early 1980s with his daughter Linda’s interest in showing heifers grew into a respected registered Angus herd known for its strong-producing cows. As the herd expanded, Don built lasting relationships with customers, always prioritizing the success of his animals in their herds over financial gain. A true cattleman, Don believed in calm, respectful handling and took great pride in his integrity, honesty, and commitment to providing the very best bulls to those he served.

Don had a gift for friendship and never lost touch. His phone had over 200 contacts in his phone and though only half are still living, he made a point to call and check in with as many as he could.

Throughout his life, Don was actively involved in a variety of community organizations. He served on the board of the Rural Water District No. 2 and was a volunteer fireman for the Kipp Fire Department. He was also active in the Saline County Conservation District. In 2023, the Kansas Bankers Association honored him with the Water Quality Award. Additionally, he was a member of the Kansas Angus Association. In recent years, he attended services at the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.

Don lived his whole life for his immediate and extended family. He is survived by his daughters Dr. Dawn Johnson of Houston, Texas, and Linda Egger (Dan) of Columbus, Nebraska. His grandchildren, Caylie Prauner (Payton) of Norfolk, Nebraska, Torie Egger of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Lane Egger of Salina, KS, and great grandchild, Parker Prauner of Norfolk, Nebraska. Don and Margie never thought twice of driving hours to see them showing animals and the best times were when they spent days with Grandma. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Don will be held at Ryan Mortuary on August 6, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.

Services for Don will be held at Ryan Mortuary on August 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.

A private burial for the family will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

A luncheon for all will be held afterward at the Kipp Volunteer Fire Department.

Betty Finkbiner, age 64, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Clay County Medical Center. Born October 21, 1960, Smithville County Hospital, Smithville Missouri, to Chester and Norma (Weers) Hicks. Betty lived a life filled with faith, family and joy.

She married the love of her life, Scott Finkbiner, on September 29, 1979, at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Clifton, Kansas. Together they raised three children — Amber, Ashley, and Brett — across seven states — Kansas, Iowa, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Minnesota, and ultimately back to their roots in Kansas.

Though she later returned to school to proudly earn her GED, Betty’s greatest joy came from her role as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She furthered her education at Marshalltown Community College and built a meaningful career as a Pharmacy Technician, where her dedication touched countless lives. Betty found joy in life’s simple pleasures: cheering for her beloved KU Jayhawks, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals; tending to her vibrant flower gardens; canning dilly beans; reading her Bible daily; and spending countless hours with her grandchildren. Her home was a place of welcome — especially on the Fourth of July when country music played from the porch and laughter echoed in the yard. She was known for her unforgettable BBQ chicken wings and meatballs, and for t-shirts that proudly displayed her faith or made you laugh. If you visited Betty, you were likely welcomed by the watchful presence of her beloved dogs. Bubba, Bitsy, Bella, and Samson were more than pets—they were faithful guardians and cherished her.

She is survived by her husband, Scott; children Amber (Judd) Sorell of Clifton, Ashley (Kyle) Peters of Linn, and Brett (Kelsey Longpine) Finkbiner of Parker, CO; 11 grandchildren; Gunnar, Kyrah, Presleigh, Ryder, Baileigh, Brooklynn, Breckyn, Haidyn, Gage, Kreux, and Stetson, each of whom brought her immense joy and filled her heart with love, her best friend, Barb (Ray) Knox of Clifton and countless friends whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Norma Hicks, and her brother Thomas.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2025, from 1–8 p.m. at Chaput Mortuary in Clyde, with family receiving friends from 6–7 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Clifton, officiated by Ron Elasser. Ruth C. Nunemaker, 94 died on August 1, 2025, at Bethany Home facility in Lindsborg, KS. &nbsp;

She was born in Salina, KS, on October 26th, 1930. &nbsp;She was an assistant nurse for 27 years working at St. John’s Hospital and Asbury Hospital. &nbsp;

Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hayward of Salina, Kansas. &nbsp;She grew up and lived in Salina most of her life. In 1948 she married Ray J. Nunemaker. &nbsp;She is preceded by her parents, husband, Ray J. Nunemaker, son, Eugene “Sam” Nunemaker, son-in-law, Andrew Forcier, and great granddaughter, Amy. &nbsp;

She is survived by her son, Ray Dean (Martie) Nunemaker, daughter, Sally Forcier and daughter-in-law, Diane (Whitesell) Nunemaker. She has 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. All were precious to her. &nbsp;She loved church and God.Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday August 7, 2025, at the Emmanuel Foursquare Church, 1325 East Cloud St. Salina, KS. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis, KS.

Ruth C. Nunemaker

Wanda "Jean" (Cooper) Grand Pre passed away on July 30, 2025, in Salina, KS. She was born on February 28, 1933, in Eads, Colorado to Floyd Harley and Alepha May (Ramsey) Cooper.

She attended a few schools including Little River and Marquette. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1950. She went on to graduate as an RN from Marymount College.

She worked as an RN from 1954 to 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital, Galvin-Haughey Clinic, and Cloud County Health Center.

She married Charles Leonard Grand Pre at our lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on October 2, 1954. To this union, four children were born: Diana, Kelly, Lee, and Leslie.

She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, The VFW Auxiliary, and the Moose Club Auxiliary. She was passionate about working with Neighbor to Neighbor. In Salina she enjoyed the Fidget Quilters and a wood carvers group. She loved her dogs, cooking, painting, gardening flowers, crocheting, and all types of sewing, including quilting and cross-stitch.

Jean was an avid reader, and she loved to travel – Ireland was a favorite! She was passionate about being a nurse, which was pretty evident since she continued working for over 60 years before she retired. She touched many families over this time span—she loved her patients! Caring for others was her specialty!!

She was so very proud of each of her children, and grandchildren. She loved visiting and hanging out with each and every one of them any time she could!! Her great-grandchildren warmed her heart in such a special way. Her life was complete when she was with her family.

Jean is survived by her children, Diana Grand Pre of Salina, KS, Kelly Kieffer (Paul) of Clyde, KS, Lee Grand Pre of Salina, KS, and Leslie Winkel (David) of Osborne, KS; grandchildren, Kale Kieffer (Janessa), Kole Kieffer (Kasie), Keely Meinecke (Philip), Haley Winkel, and Heath Winkel; great-grandchildren, Bronc Kieffer, Bryleigh Kieffer, Brinley Kieffer, Tragen Kieffer, Truitt Kieffer, Sistine Meinecke, Canon Meinecke ,Trinity Meinecke, Mercy Meinecke, and Rosary Meinecke; numerous nieces and nephews, and bonus children, Diane and Kenny Hartzell, and Mary Ann Garlow.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Alepha Cooper, her husband, Charles Grand Pre, her siblings, Marilyn Rush and Bobby Gene Cooper, and a granddaughter, Stephanie Kieffer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, in Concordia, Kansas with Father Joseph Kieffer officiating. She was born on February 28, 1933, in Eads, Colorado to Floyd Harley and Alepha May (Ramsey) Cooper.She attended a few schools including Little River and Marquette. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1950. She went on to graduate as an RN from Marymount College.She worked as an RN from 1954 to 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital, Galvin-Haughey Clinic, and Cloud County Health Center.She married Charles Leonard Grand Pre at our lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on October 2, 1954. To this union, four children were born: Diana, Kelly, Lee, and Leslie.She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, The VFW Auxiliary, and the Moose Club Auxiliary. She was passionate about working with Neighbor to Neighbor. In Salina she enjoyed the Fidget Quilters and a wood carvers group. She loved her dogs, cooking, painting, gardening flowers, crocheting, and all types of sewing, including quilting and cross-stitch.Jean was an avid reader, and she loved to travel – Ireland was a favorite! She was passionate about being a nurse, which was pretty evident since she continued working for over 60 years before she retired. She touched many families over this time span—she loved her patients! Caring for others was her specialty!!She was so very proud of each of her children, and grandchildren. She loved visiting and hanging out with each and every one of them any time she could!! Her great-grandchildren warmed her heart in such a special way. Gary Clifford Burt, 77, of Bennington, Kansas, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, Kansas. He was born on January 27, 1948 in Salina, Kansas, the son of Clifford and Lucille Burt.

Gary graduated from Solomon High School in 1966. He dedicated the last 25 years of his life as the owner operator of Burt’s Pasture Clearing. Cutting trees and putting up hay was his passion. He served his community with pride and commitment as a member of the Bennington Lions Club and volunteer at the Bennington Rodeo. Gary will be remembered for his profound love for his family and friends, always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need.

As a truly creative individual and a natural problem-solver, Gary was determined to fix things, often finding unique solutions to any challenge. He had a wide circle of friends in the Salina area. His passions included his family, work, animals, especially his beloved dogs, playing cards, hunting and fishing, and the Bennington Rodeo.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 21 years, Pat Burt; his sons, Kevin Burt (LoAnn Burt) of Dallas, Texas, and Matt Burt (Susan Burt) of Salina, Kansas; his stepson, D. Travis Crickenberger (Lisa Crickenberger) of Annabella, Utah; his brothers, Don Burt of Merkel, Texas, and Kenny Burt of Salina, Kansas; and his two cherished grandchildren, Harper Burt and Jack Burt. Gary's presence will be profoundly missed, but the lessons he taught and the love he shared will continue to resonate in the hearts of those he touched.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; sister Barb Spears; brother Jack Burt: Mother-in-law, Dora Mae Graham.

Edna Faye Baldwin, 93, of Salina, Kansas, passed away on July 29, 2025 at Dignity Care Home, her last days surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on August 21, 1931, in Topeka, Kansas, and raised in Alma, Kansas often spending time on her family’s farm. The fourth child from a family of eleven, Edna was the daughter of John and Eleanor (Tenbrink) Schwalm. Edna earned her nursing degree from St. Francis in Topeka, Kansas, and began working as a nurse in Kansas City, Kansas.

She soon met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Baldwin. They were married on October 19, 1956, in Alma, Kansas, and were blessed with 51 years together before Bob preceded her in death. Their reunion in Heaven brings great comfort to the family who loved them both dearly.

Edna was equal parts fierce and faithful. She dedicated over six decades to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker. She led her family with resilient strength, humor, and an unshakable devotion to Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her three children: Laurie (Mike) Cooper, Sandy Hickey, Randy (Brandy) Baldwin; her grandchildren: Paul (Amber) Cooper, Eric (Monica) Cooper, Bryan Cooper, Keith (Clarissa) Cooper, Brett (Michelle) Cooper, Jarah (Luke) Byron, Seth Cooper, Michael Hickey, Matthew Hickey, Samantha (Brett) Sarine, and Amaya Baldwin; and her many great-grandchildren: Ella, Brooks, Faith, Joy, Payten, Ivy, Adeline, Benjamin, Aiden, Jaxon, Lilly, Elijah, Isaac, Hazel, Duke, Amelie, and Jack.

Edna’s daily routine revolved around her time with the Lord by reading her Bible and saying her prayers. Edna served as President of the Women’s Aglow organization, regularly attended women’s prayer groups, and was an active member of her church community. Her passion for ministry led her on mission trips to Thailand and Israel—twice each—spreading the Gospel with boldness and grace.

As the beloved matriarch of her family, she was always available to listen, to pray, and to encourage others with countless memorized scriptures. She loved baking her famous apple pie, soaking in the sunshine beside her tomato plants, and never missed an opportunity to be present for her family. She had a sharp sense of humor, a ready comeback, and a firm belief in calling things as she saw them—but always with love. Her loyalty was unfaltering, her prayers unceasing, and her presence a steady anchor in the lives of all who knew her.

Edna’s home was a place of warmth, prayer, and peace. Her door was always open, and her heart was always full. Through her words and her actions, she spread the truth of God’s love and the salvation found through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Her life was a testimony, and her legacy will continue in the lives of those she touched. Well done, good and faithful servant. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Coleen Mary Pihl, age 88, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2025, in Salina, KS, with her devoted husband by her side.

Coleen was born on September 4, 1936, in Salina, KS, to Lynn Drake and Wilma Drake (Price). Her early years were spent in Natoma, where her father ran a clothing store. The family later moved to Phillipsburg and then back to Salina, where her father established his own accounting business.

Coleen attended Whittier Elementary and Roosevelt Junior High, where she played the clarinet, sang in the chorus, and played piano for Girls Reserve meetings. At Salina Central High School, she was active in theatre and particularly enjoyed her accounting class. During her senior year, she suffered the loss of her father. After graduating, she began working at his accounting firm and helping her mother care for the family.

She later met and fell in love with LeRoy Pihl, and they married on September 20, 1958, at First United Methodist Church in Salina. Their early married life took them from Smolan to a duplex in Assaria, before settling into their farmhouse home on Falun Road on January 1, 1960, where they would spend over 60 years together.

Coleen embraced life as a farmer’s wife and mother of three with grace and joy. She was a faithful and active member of Salemsborg Lutheran Church, participating in Golden Links (a young couple’s group), WELCA, sewing club, bible study groups, and more. Always generous with her time, she was also involved in PTA, 4-H, and a local Pinochle club.

Gardening was one of Coleen’s greatest passions. She was an active member of several gardening and craft groups, including the Master Gardeners, The Gatherers, and a community wellness group called Walk Kansas. Her flower gardens were a reflection of her generous spirit, vibrant, welcoming, and loving, shared with everyone around her.

Coleen loved to travel, whether camping in Colorado, taking an ocean cruise, boarding a tour bus with friends to an unknown destination, trying her luck in Las Vegas, or making her annual fun-loving trips with her youngest sister to visit their sister in Miami, she was always eager for the next adventure. She loved Frank Sinatra’s music and classic films, especially Casablanca.

Above all, Colleen’s true joy was her family. Her home was a place of warmth and celebration, beautifully decorated for holidays, birthdays, backyard BBQs, and the beloved annual Christmas cookie decorating tradition. “Waffle Wednesdays” with her great-grandchildren became a very special weekly highlight. She and LeRoy rarely missed family events, whether dance recitals, graduations, or sporting events. Colleen’s happiest moments were spent with loved ones gathered around the table or watching children play in the yard.
