Elizabeth Marie Bowlin February 18, 1929 ~ May 1, 2024

Elizabeth Marie (Mosiman) Bowlin passed from this world to her Heavenly home on May 1, 2024, at the age of 95. 

Elizabeth (Betty) was born to John and Marie (Mueller) Mosiman on February 18, 1929 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton, Kansas. &nbsp;Betty grew up in the Furley community with her parents and seven brothers. &nbsp; Being the only girl, she was well protected and loved by all those boys. &nbsp;Betty spent the last year of her life living in the same hall at Kidron Bethel Village with two of them, Don and Butch. &nbsp;She was still fiercely protected and loved by her brothers while at Kidron. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Betty graduated from Whitewater High School in 1947 and then went on to earn her teaching certificate from Ottawa University. &nbsp;She taught for four years in a two-room schoolhouse in Greenwich, Kansas and then went on to teach for one year in Whitewater before starting her family. &nbsp;She loved being in the classroom and often spoke fondly of her time shaping young minds. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Betty married the love of her life, Blaine Bowlin, on June 16, 1953 at Elbing Missionary Church. &nbsp; They were married for 65 years. &nbsp;Together they made their home in Whitewater, Kansas and gave birth to three children: Scott, Brenda and Carl. &nbsp;In 1956, Blaine and Elizabeth purchased the Whitewater Locker Company where they worked side by side for 34 years before retiring and turning the business over to their son, Scott. &nbsp; Elizabeth wore many hats while working alongside Blaine, all while raising their three children at the Locker. &nbsp; Betty was a member of the Federated Church of Whitewater where she was the church pianist for over 60 years….retiring her position at the age of 93. &nbsp;Sitting at the piano gave her so much enjoyment and peace. &nbsp;She could often be found sitting at her piano in her living room calming herself with hymns right up to the day she moved to Kidron. &nbsp; Betty shared her love for Jesus with her kind heart and warm smile to everyone she met. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Betty spent countless hours working in her flower beds and garden. &nbsp;She loved to share the beauty of her yard with anyone she could. &nbsp;Many friends and family members received detailed tours of the fruits of her labor. &nbsp; Her success growing truly beautiful plants was a testament to her patience and love. Betty loved to sew, crochet, bake her famous pies, grow an impressive garden and spend &nbsp;time outside enjoying God’s beauty. &nbsp; She could be seen in her later years in her golf cart still caring for her yard and flowers, and continued to give tours to anyone who was interested. &nbsp;Betty had a special place in her heart for young children. &nbsp; Even in her last weeks, a child could bring a smile to her face. &nbsp;Aside from her many interests, Betty’s true pride and joy was her family. &nbsp;She was happiest when surrounded by them. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Betty is survived by her son Scott (Terre) Bowlin of Whitewater and daughter, Brenda (David) Highbarger of Towanda. &nbsp; Grandchildren: Brandon Bowlin, Grant (Adriane) Bowlin, Cameron (Jessica) Bowlin, Stacia Hobbs, Devin (Tara) Highbarger, Kelsey (Levi) Koster and Talia (Sam) Tewes. &nbsp; Great-grandchildren: Ayden, Cooper and Noah Bowlin; Jude, Julian, Jentry and Jonas Bowlin; Waylon and Clay Bowlin; Landon, Spencer and Ainsleigh Hobbs; Wade Highbarger and Amelia Tewes. &nbsp;Brothers Butch Mosiman and Wayne Mosiman. &nbsp; Sisters-in-law Marilyn Mosiman and Madeline Mosiman and many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Blaine Bowlin, her son Carl Wade Bowlin and brothers Johnny, Willard, Gerald, Eldon and Don Mosiman. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Family will gather with friends on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 from 6:00-8:00pm at Lamb Funeral Home, Whitewater. &nbsp; &nbsp;A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30am Thursday, May 9, 2024 at The Federated Church, Whitewater with burial to follow at the Whitewater Cemetery. &nbsp;Memorial contributions can be made in Elizabeth’s name to The Federated Church.

&nbsp;Raymond "Sam" Harold Schwemmer August 10, 1932 ~ May 4, 2024

Sam’s life began on August 10, 1932, in Wiley, Colorado. He was the son of Harry and Amanda (Hamm) Schwemmer. Sam was a 1950 graduate of Towanda High School. He attended Wichita Business College in September of 1950. Sam served his country in the United States National Guard starting in 1948 until his honorable discharge as Captain in 1967. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Beth Mosier at the Towanda Methodist Church on December 7, 1952.

Sam was a stockman and farmer while working at Coleman of Wichita until he retired to become a full-time farmer in the rural Towanda area for the rest of his life. He was a member of Palmyra Baptist Church, rural Benton, KS serving as Deacon, treasure, trustee, and a teacher. His pride was overseeing the Sausage-Pancake Supper for numerous years.

His loving family surviving him includes children Craig and Roxanne Waltman of Towanda, Ed and Nancy Wait of Benton, Neil and Susan Schwemmer of Augusta and Rodney and Cathy Schwemmer of Augusta. Grandchildren include Chad and Jennifer Waltman, Jenna and Jake Myers, Staci Wait, Aubrie and Trever Lockamy, Courtney and Aaron Powers, Ashley and Brendon Mannix, Heath and Kelsey Kennemer, Evan and Jordan Schwemmer, Trevor and Ashley Schwemmer and Madison Schwemmer: 18 great grandchildren, brother Gib and Wilma Schwemmer, sister-in-law Helen and Connie Terrell, great nephew, Russell Bliss and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sam passed away Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Via Christi St. Francis Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita, KS. He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, parents, Harry and Amanda, brothers Eldon, Bud, Doc, sister Evelyn Bradbury and grandson Mark Wait.

Sam’s family will gather with friends on Tuesday May 7, 2024, from 5 p.m. &nbsp;to 7 p.m. at Palmyra Baptist Church. Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday May 8, 2024, at Palmyra Baptist Church, Benton, KS. Burial to follow at Green Valley Cemetery. &nbsp;Lamb Funeral Home, Whitewater is serving the family.

John H. Higgins January 4, 1941 ~ May 3, 2024

John H. Higgins was born January 4, 1941 in Trenton, Missouri, the son of Howard and Urania (Klingensmith) Higgins. John departed this world on Friday, at his home, in Abilene Kansas at the age of 83 years.

John graduated from Princeton High School in Princeton Missouri and was engaged in farming up until his marriage to Hope Layne on October 2, 1960 in Trenton, Missouri. Following his marriage, John pursued the marketing field and in 1973 joined the American Greeting Card Corporation - Cleveland, Ohio. John and Hope moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where John was a Zone Manager. While there he was chosen Salesman of the Year. In 1980 John made the decision to move back to Kansas to be nearer to his family. After moving back to Kansas, John covered the entire western part of Kansas with his territory until his retirement in 2003, retiring with honors, making many friends and business acquaintances along the way.

John was a family man who enjoyed hunting, history, gardening and reading. John was very devoted to his Masonic Lodge and participated in many of their fundraisers. He gave back to the Masonic Lodge by donating flooring and carpeting to the local lodge in Abilene.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Hope Higgins, daughter, Jeanette L. Parker of Wichita, sons John W. Higgins of Abilene, Joseph Higgins and his wife Courtney of Topeka and Jeffrey Higgins and his wife, Veronica, of Abilene, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren and his brother andsister.

Services will be at the Martin-Becker Carlson Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Walls officiating. His final resting place will be in the family mausoleum at the Abilene Cemetery with Masonic Honors. The family will receive friends from 9:00 am-service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Vera Irene (Andres) Hooper August 8, 1924 ~ May 5, 2024

Vera Irene (Andres) Hooper, 99, passed away May 5, 2024 with her son and daughter by her side. She was born August 8, 1924 to Lawrence and Minnie (Syring) Andres on the family farm southeast of Alta Vista, Kansas.

After graduating from the Alta Vista High School, where she took the Normal Training Course, she taught the District 62 (South Pole) country grade school in Wabaunsee County for the next four years.

She married Oscar (nickname Dick) Warren Hooper on August 4, 1946, after he returned from his military service in World War II in Europe. Due to his job transfers while working for the Gambles Store, she lived in Junction City, Clay Center, Abilene, and Salina. They enjoyed sixty-three happy years together before Oscar passed away in 2009.

She was a homemaker, devoted wife, and mother, always a hard worker, but ready for visits with relatives and friends or to help when needed. She shared her love with family, friends, and caregivers, verbally, and with hugs and kisses.

She is survived by her son, Barry, and daughter, LaVonda, both of Salina, a niece, Nyla (Gene) Jones of El Cajon, California, nephews, Gary (Gloria) Brunswick, of Yuma, Arizona, Rick (Glenda) Hooper, of Hutchinson, Leland (Diana) Swartz, of St. Louis, Missouri, and Jason (Jennifer) Hooper, of Gilberts, Illinois, great nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister, Fern Brunswick.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, May 9th, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 500 S. Ohio St., Salina, Kansas.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 10th at 11:00 am, at Alta Vista Cemetery in Alta Vista, Kansas.

Memorials may be made to the Salina Food Bank or Interim Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Ronald Richard Tremblay January 30, 1937 ~ May 6, 2024

Ronald Richard Tremblay, 87, of Salina, KS, passed away Monday, May 6, 2024. He was born on January 30, 1937, in Goffstown, NH, to Rene and Cecile (Beliveau) Tremblay.

Ron enlisted in the Air Force in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1959. He worked for many years as a City of Salina building official and later as an investigator for the Kansas Lottery. He was a past secretary/treasurer of the Quivera Gun Club, Patron Life Member of the NRA, Life Member of the KS State Rifle Association, and a member of the Central KS Amateur Radio Club, Red Baron Chapter of AMBUCS, and Single Action Shooting Society.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Leonard Tremblay and Norman Tremblay. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Kathleen (Breer) Tremblay; sister-in-law, Janet Tremblay; nephews, Randy, Ryan, and Rick; and niece, Rene.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 13, with a rosary at 9:40 a.m., and Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., all at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina, with burial to follow in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Salina.

Memorials may be made to a charity of donor’s choice, care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Charles W. “Chuc” Koepplin, 80, of Salina, passed away April 30, 2024.&nbsp; He was born on September 25, 1943 in Mankato, Minnesota to William Charles and Edna Ivy (Lamp) Koepplin.

Chuc spent eight years in the United States Airforce.

He married Joyce Peiffer on October 17, 1963, upon leaving the Airforce, he returned to Salina, where he spent the rest of his life.&nbsp; He worked for Beech Aircraft, Westinghouse and Philips Lighting as machinist maintenance.

He loved his family very much, left to mourn his passing, is wife, Joyce, of the home; sons, David Koepplin and Scott Koepplin (Thresa); grandchildren, Chesna (Matt), Erin (Russ), John (Jaide), and Kara (Bre); and great-grandchildren.

He and Joyce took many trips on his Harley throughout the years.&nbsp;

Chuc is preceded in death by his parents, William and Ivy; and sister, Kay.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Church of the Cross United Methodist Church.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

Patricia Mary Morrison, 91, Salina, KS, died May 2, 2024 at Salina Regional Health Center.

Patricia Morrison was born Oct. 13, 1932 in Norwich, Norfolk, England to Thomas Frances and Caroline Lockwell (Moore) Amies. Her English childhood memories included holidays at the seaside and blackberry picking as well as the hardships of war: food rationing, carrying gas masks to school, and being pulled from a nice warm bed to sit in an Air Raid Shelter while bombs fell on the city. She lived in England before immigrating to the United States when she was a young adult.&nbsp;

Patricia married her first husband, Millard P. Nichols, in 1950, with whom she had four children. In 1956, she became a U.S. citizen while living in Texas. Then in 1960, after residing in several states, she made Salina, KS her home, where she continued to live for the rest of her life. There, in 1964, she married second husband James H. Lewis (d. 1993), with whom she had another child. Patricia and James owned and managed The Ritz Tavern and, later, The Shamrock Lounge, before she began a long career at Tony’s Pizza and Schwan’s in 1973, retiring as a Production Supervisor in 1997. She was proud not only of her accomplishments for the company, but also of the long-lasting friendships that began on the production line.

Patricia married her last partner in life and love Charles P. Morrison in 1995. Charles shared her love of singing, dancing, and travel, even accompanying her on a work assignment to Manchester, England in the summer of 1995 to Schwan’s Europe, where she was tasked with training the British team to meet her high standards.&nbsp;

An avid gardener who had a knack for being able to grow almost anything, Patricia surrounded her house with flowerbeds. She enjoyed a cup of tea but preferred very hot black coffee or a vanilla latte, and, in the evening, relaxed with a glass of Chardonnay or a little Sherry. Patricia loved her family, friends, and the Episcopal Church, which she became a member of in 1959 at St. Christopher’s, Glasgow AFB, Montana. Christ Cathedral, Salina, became her long-term church home in the early 1980s – she invited countless friends to attend with her, was a member of the Altar Guild for many years, and four of her grandchildren served as acolytes there.&nbsp;

Throughout her life Patricia remained courageous in the face of any challenges. Even as Parkinson’s Disease took much of her independence, she continued to be kind and compassionate, worrying about those around her. While hospitalized, she told her family to “be nice to the nurses” and wanted to take all visiting family out for dinner. She never lost the caring spirit those who loved her knew well.&nbsp;

Lynn Harris Miller, 80, passed away on April 21, 2024 at Wesley Towers in Hutchinson, KS.

Lynn was born on August 16, 1943 in Pittsburg, KS to parents Harris and Margaret Riley Miller.

Lynn liked spending time fishing and hunting (primarily deer and antelope) or simply driving around looking at wildlife. In his later years he enjoyed when the grandkids came to visit and hearing about all their events, he liked when we brought him pop and cookies and visiting the local VFW to see friends.

He was preceded in death by Margaret Miller (Mother), Harris Miller (Father); Son: Cory Miller; Brother: John Miller.

D. Duane Scoville January 5, 1955 ~&nbsp;May 3, 2024

With family and friends close by, D. Duane Scoville passed away May 3, 2024, after a long illness. He was 69.

Duane was born Jan. 5, 1955, in Lindsborg, Kansas, to Donald and Pat Scoville, He was the third-born of four children. They grew up mainly in Smolan, Kansas.

A veteran the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era, Duane’s passion was riding horses, training them and working as a cowboy. He enjoyed and perfected that profession for many years in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

He married Judith Elaine Jones of Salina, July 5, 1975, in Florida. They raised three sons in Salina, Kansas.

Duane married Stephanie Ash, on New Year’s Eve in 1998, in Eureka, Springs, AR. They purchased a historic mountainous ranch near Lake George, CO in 2007, and named it Idlewild Ridge Ranch.

Duane worked as a tour guide with Adventures Out West, and was nicknamed Scorpion Cowboy. His big personality and infectious laugh enabled him to garner quite a following. Expert horsemanship and a love for the Old West enabled Duane’s involvement in local television commercials and movies. The latest movie, “Horizon” starring Kevin Costner will hit theaters in June.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, and a niece (Donna’s daughter), Jennifer Bartunek.

Duane is survived by his siblings Dennis (Pam) of Salina, Donna Smith of Buena Vista CO, Patty (Dave) Basgall, Junction City, and&nbsp;numerous&nbsp;beloved nieces &amp; nephews; his wife, Stephanie; His children Dunn (Monica) New Jersey, Luke (Emily) Kansas City, Jake (Ashley) Salina, Susannah (Denver), Justin, Lake George, Keely (Kelly) Laramie, WY; grandchildren Jacob, Lauren, Benjamin, Noah, Gracie, Lucas, Annie, Siggy, Erik, Arnie, Ludwig, Mia, Anthony, Kolton, Katelyn and Kaleb.

Duane’s&nbsp;beloved animals include horses Paloma and Raven. He shared an apartment with canines Lucky and Adele (a.k.a. Addie), and felines Sky and Telly.

The family plans a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Ranch, 2868 Solomon Road, Solomon, KS. A memorial service will occur later at Idlewild Ranch.

The family suggests donations in Duane’s name to Shiloh Ranch.

Don G. Holcomb, 84, died Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at his home in Salina, KS.

Don was born on April 4, 1940 in Montgomery, West Virginia the son of Ernest Holcomb and Louise McKnight Holcomb.

Don married Shirley Haraldson on August 14,1960 at the Army base in Fort Riley Kansas.

Don was a roofer for 30 years with Jayhawk Roofing Company. He liked to fish and vacation in West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, son Terry, and granddaughter Joslyn Kejr. Also, his 6 brothers and 3 sisters.

He is survived by children: Carolyn and Ken Kejr, Lindsborg, KS, Cary and Debi Holcomb, Manhattan, KS, Donnie Holcomb, Salina, KS and Laura Holcomb, Salina, KS; Grandchildren: Tasha Holcomb, Andrew Kejr, Jessica Kejr, Sara Holcomb Guerra, Graci Kejr and AnnaMae Feigle; 4 great grandsons: Tyler Machor, Brandon Stroud, Joseph Kejr and Jacob Kejr

Our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Vada (Smith) Ensz was born to Dan and Katie (Nightingale) Smith on December 12, 1926, at Fairview, Oklahoma. She passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2024, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas.

Mom was the seventh of eleven children and often spoke fondly of her growing up years with her siblings in the big white house east of Fairview. She met the Lord at age thirteen and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite by minister Edd Frank on December 3, 1939, at Fairview, Oklahoma. She received her education at a rural country school near Fairview.

Helping people was meaningful to Mom, and she spent many years working as a CNA at Goessel, Moundridge and Pleasant View Home. Our Mom was married to our dad, Menno R Ensz, on June 12, 1960, at Fairview, Oklahoma by her father, Dan H. Smith. They resided on the family farm west of Inman, Kansas and raised six children there. Dad and Mom enjoyed 27 happy years together before Dad passed away very unexpectedly on October 4, 1987, leaving all of us, especially Mom, very lonely. Mom’s faith in God was evident as she bravely carried on. In the fall of 1999, Mom bought a house in Inman and moved off the farm. Mom missed the farm but loved it when the family would gather at her place or when she would travel to see them.

Approximately four years ago, Mom moved to the assisted living apartments at Pleasant View Home. The care she received was greatly appreciated. Her hands were never idle. She spent many hours making quilts and embroidering tea towels for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, also faithfully remembering our birthdays with cards and money. Our hearts are overjoyed with the thought of Mom being reunited with Dad on yonder shore.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Bonnie (Jason) Yost, Ward, South Dakota, Janalea (David) Becker, Canton, Kansas, Michael (Lois) Ensz, Inman, Kansas, Marlys (Kendall) Martens, Inman, Kansas, Kristine (Kerry) Boeckner, Harrisburg, Arkansas, Roderick (Raschel) Ensz, Macon, Mississippi; twenty-one grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Dan Junior Smith; one sister, Geneva Smith; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Ensz. Preceding her in death are her husband, four sisters, and four brothers.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Zion Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Inman, KS.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Sunday, May 5, at Zion Church of God in Christ, Mennonite.&nbsp; Burial will follow at Zion Church Cemetery.

Eleanor G. Bach, 94, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2024 in Manhattan, KS. She was born, the youngest of nine children, June 2, 1929 in Ellsworth, KS to W.E. and Grace (Allen) Sheridan, who were raised in the dust bowl days of Kansas. She graduated from Ellsworth High School and was a lifelong member in the Presbyterian Church. She was organist for many years at the United Church of Christ in Holyrood, KS and First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth. She married Robert E. Schaefer in 1949 and later married Frank Bach in 1965. Her joys in life were her children and grandchildren, her music, and sewing.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter Ellen Roehrman (Rick) of Woodland Park, CO; son Jim Bach (Katy) of Manhattan; daughter Dianna Vanek (Mike) of Kanopolis, KS; son Daniel Schaefer (Gayle) of Kanopolis; daughters-in-law, Vicki Schaefer of Hoyt, KS, Deborah Bach of Ellsworth, and Linda Bach of Sumter, SC; 18 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, and many great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank Bach; sons, Michael Schaefer, Douglas Bach, and Daniel Bach; grandson Kevin Vanek; three great grandchildren, three brothers and five sisters.

Troy Jack Miller May 27, 1963 ~ April 27, 2024

Troy Jack Miller, Sr., 60, passed away on April 27, 2024 at his home, in Lindsborg, Kansas.

Troy was born on May 27, 1963 in Kansas City, KS to the late James Warren and Margaret Ann (Langrehr) Miller.

Troy is survived by his wife Suzanne (Wedel) Miller of 37 years. Troy and Suzanne met while attending Hutchinson Juco where he played baseball while they both attended school. Troy would go on to graduate and transfer to Fort Hays State University where he would continue playing baseball until he earned his Bachelor's degree. This would allow him to work for 35 years as an Industrial Arts teacher and coach, including 21 years at Smoky Valley High School.

Troy is also survived by his children J. W. Miller and his wife Hannah Hemmer, T.J. Miller and his wife Kelli Miller, and Maci Locke and her husband Colton Locke; sisters: Ramona Miller and LaDonna Benscheidt; and his beautiful grandchildren: Chandler, Kendall, Remy, Wyatt and Rowe.

Troy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother: Tyler Miller.

It was Troy’s wish to be cremated and that the family would not hold any type of funeral service or celebration of life, but rather those that wished could remember him by eating at their favorite Mexican restaurant.

One of Troy’s proudest moments was the honor of having the local baseball field named after him, and it is here where the family would like to gather in his honor on Monday, May 27th, 2024 at 5:00 PM. The family would like to invite anyone who wishes to join them in remembering Troy’s unique sense of humor, larger than life personality, and unforgettable stories that made him who he was.

Howard Oscar Larson September 16, 1928 ~&nbsp;April 28, 2024

Howard Oscar Larson was born September 16, 1928,&nbsp;in Tescott, Kansas,&nbsp;the&nbsp;tenth&nbsp;and youngest child of Ralph Bernard and Neva&nbsp;Lambertson&nbsp;Larson, and the grandson&nbsp;of early Kansas&nbsp;settlers. &nbsp;He&nbsp;passed from this life on April 28, 2024,&nbsp;in&nbsp;Minneapolis, Kansas.&nbsp;Oscar&nbsp;attended Tescott schools, graduating in 1946, and&nbsp;completed one semester at Kansas State University before returning home to manage the family farm&nbsp;following&nbsp;his father’s death.&nbsp;At&nbsp;age 8,&nbsp;he&nbsp;drove a team of mules to haul his first wagon load of wheat to the Tescott elevator, taking&nbsp;along&nbsp;with him a neighbor&nbsp;boy&nbsp;who had hopped on for&nbsp;the&nbsp;ride.&nbsp;Oscar&nbsp;farmed and raised cattle actively for most of the remainder of his 95 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;Living in the Saline River valley west of Tescott,&nbsp;he&nbsp;persevered through the Great Depression, World War II, droughts and floods.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Oscar was active in the Kansas Farm Bureau, served on the Ottawa County Extension board,&nbsp;the Tescott school board at the time of school unification,&nbsp;and&nbsp;served many years on the Franklin Cemetery&nbsp;board.&nbsp;He&nbsp;was a member of the Kansas Crop Improvement Association&nbsp;raising and selling certified wheat seed for many years.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Larson farm was recognized as a&nbsp;Farm Bureau&nbsp;Century&nbsp;Farm. &nbsp;Oscar was a recipient of&nbsp;an&nbsp;Ottawa County Conservation&nbsp;Grassland Award&nbsp;and also&nbsp;a Kansas Bankers Soil Conservation Award&nbsp;in 2010.&nbsp;He was a member of the Tescott United Methodist Church.

Oscar was preceded in death by&nbsp;his&nbsp;wife Marilyn, his&nbsp;parents, four sisters—May, Lura Vivian, Thais, and Trudy—and&nbsp;five brothers—Lambert, Bob, Chris, and Don and Dean who both died in the Philippines&nbsp;while serving&nbsp;during&nbsp;World War II.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was also preceded in death by his son Robert&nbsp;and step-children Leslie and Joe. &nbsp;He is survived by his sons Allen (Diane), Ralph (Janet), Dean (Valerie)&nbsp;and daughters Betty Furney and Sally&nbsp;Morrison&nbsp;(Todd), and stepdaughter Sue Jordan (Don)&nbsp;and many&nbsp;grandchildren and great grandchildren. &nbsp;

A memorial service&nbsp;will be held on Saturday, May&nbsp;4, 2024, at&nbsp;2:00&nbsp;PM&nbsp;at&nbsp;the Tescott United Methodist Church. Visitation will&nbsp;follow in the fellowship hall.&nbsp;In accordance with&nbsp;Oscar’s wishes his body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.&nbsp;The family suggests memorials to the&nbsp;Ottawa County Health Center,&nbsp;215 East 8th&nbsp;Street,&nbsp;Minneapolis, KS 67467, where Oscar received&nbsp;kind and excellent care&nbsp;during&nbsp;the&nbsp;last year of his life.

Deirdre Ann (Langan) Alden June 12, 1962 ~ April 30, 2024

Deirdre Ann Alden (nee Langan) passed away on April 30, 2024 in Salina, KS, with her daughter Aislinn at her bedside, after a hard-fought one-year struggle with cancer.

Born to Sean and Una Langan on June 12, 1962 in San Francisco, CA, Deirdre attended St. Cecilia’s elementary and St. Rose Academy high schools in the City.&nbsp; She received her nursing certificate after attending the University of San Francisco and California State University East Bay.

Deirdre moved to Kansas to help Aislinn with Deirdre’s new grandchild Halle, while Aislinn herself studied nursing and interned at the local hospital.&nbsp; After Aislinn received her nursing degree, it was Aislinn who helped care for Deirdre as she suffered through the disease and its treatments.

Predeceased by her father Sean, Deirdre is survived by her daughter Aislinn (Alex), her sons Bruce and Hugh, her mother Una Langan, her brother John (Shawn Michelle), and her two wonderful grandchildren, Halle and Lailah.

A mass to celebrate Deirdre’s life will be held on May 22, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia’s Church, located at 17th Avenue and Vicente Streets in San Francisco, CA.&nbsp; Following the service, Deirdre will be laid to rest with her father Sean at Holy Cross cemetery in Colma, CA.

Deirdre will be remembered as a loving mother, daughter, grandmother, sister and friend.&nbsp; Her lively and loving spirit will continue to inspire and comfort all of us fortunate enough to know her.

Randi Jean Gifford, 60, of Lindsborg, died April 13, 2024 at her residence. She had lived in the Lindsborg area most of her life and was a registered nurse.

She was born July 7, 1963 in Lindsborg, the daughter of Everett W. and Anna L. (Pauls) Johnson. She graduated from Lindsborg High School and Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her sister, Jane A. (Greg) Yount of Bakersfield, Missouri and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Her parents preceded her in death.

Cremation has taken place. A private family inurnment will take place in the Christian Ridge Cemetery in rural Lindsborg at a later date.

Memorials have been established with the KJIL radio station or the Kansas Bible Camp, in care of Olson's Mortuary, Canton.

Dennis Dean Carlson, 68, of McPherson, KS, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

Dennis was born on July 7, 1955, in McPherson, KS, the son of Robert Dean and Betty Jean (Becker) Carlson.&nbsp; He graduated from McPherson High School in 1973 and continued his education studying Electrical Engineering at Hutchinson Community College and Mechanical Engineering at Kansas State University.&nbsp; He studied Business and received a Bachelor Degree at Central Christian College of Kansas. On August 12, 1995, Dennis was united in marriage to Sherill Anne (James) Newberry at the First Baptist Church in McPherson.

While working at CertainTeed, he was awarded 11 U.S. patents. Dennis was a former Engineering Manager at Eaton Corporation and Maintenance Manager/Superintendent at Westlake Corporation. He retired from Stryten in Salina as Maintenance Manager. Dennis was also a part owner of a plastic extrusion company in Lamar, MO.

He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church and member of Band of Brothers and Huddle 4 Men. He was a prior member of the Lions Club. Dennis also served on the advisory board of the Salina Area Technical School.

Survivors include his loving wife, Sherill of the home; children, Robert Newberry and Brenda Newberry, both of McPherson, KS, Kelly Carlson-Nicola (Chris) of Coyville, KS, Melissa Newberry of Leavenworth, KS, and Tara Flores (Israel) of Sugar Land, TX; a sister, Diane Rhea (Terry) of Phoenix, AZ; nine grandchildren, Audrey Miller, Sarah Newberry, Brian Patrick, Layne Patrick, Cole Carlson, Madison Stroud, Aiden Allen, Mason Flores, and Liam Flores; one great-grandchild; and numerous extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Steven Carlson; daughter, Amy Carlson; and grandson, Caleb Newberry.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Monday, May 6, 2024, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 7, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. John Pattison and Rev. Melissa Newberry officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Carl Leon Smith, 79, of Colorado Springs, Colorado died Monday, April 22, 2024 in Colorado Springs, CO.

He was born August 14, 1944 in Lavern, Oklahoma the son of Leonard and Blanche (Luinstra) Smith.&nbsp; After graduating from Medicine Lodge High School, Carl earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. in computer and electrical engineering from Rice University.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Blanche Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Smith; his son, Brian Smith and his wife, Juli, of Colorado Springs, CO; and some cousins.

Arnelda Irene Buras Kepka, of Dorrance, KS, passed away on April 28, 2024, at the Wilson Care &amp; Rehab, at the age of 96. She was born on July 17, 1927, to Walter and Florence (Glazik) Buras in Omaha, NE. Arnelda married Raymond Anton Kepka on August 22, 1953, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Omaha. They were blessed with 7 children: Pamela, Debra, Henry, Michael, Ray Jr., John, and Paulla.

Arnelda grew up in Omaha and graduated from South Omaha High School in 1945. Her last year of high school she also worked at Boys Town personalizing letters. She was a secretary for the Board of Education at Joslyn Castle for three years and was a secretary/payroll supervisor for Tumpane for five years. She then left the big city and all her family and friends to move to a small farm in the middle of Kansas where she raised her family with great joy, never complaining about having to leave Omaha.

Arnelda was a woman of deep love and devotion, and her faith in God was not only a constant source of strength for herself, but also for her family and friends. She was such a caring person who always thought more about others than herself. Her pride and joy were her children and she watched over them like a mother hen watching over her chicks. Arnelda spent much of her time in the kitchen cooking and baking cookies for her family. She also spent a lot of time patching clothing and writing letters to her numerous extended family members, never missing a birthday acknowledgement for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Arnelda will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but the celebration of her life and memories will never be forgotten.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 10:30 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. Visitation will be Friday 6-8PM with a Vigil Service at 7PM at the church and Saturday 9-10AM..

Vickie Joann (Proett) Weaver, 71, of Vinland, KS died Saturday, April 27, 2024 in her home.

Vickie was born November 7, 1952 in Wakefield, Nebraska, the oldest of nine children and served as a nurse during a career covering four decades.&nbsp; Family and helping others were her top priorities.&nbsp; She married Rick Weaver in 1983 and arrived in Baldwin in 1985.&nbsp; She worked at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha and the Wayne (Nebraska) Hospital prior to coming to Baldwin.&nbsp; In Baldwin she worked at the Jones Clinic and Baldwin Family Practice until retirement.&nbsp; Vickie was an avid supporter of community and school activities.&nbsp; She was a frequent volunteer in Baldwin functions ranging from local fundraisers to making hundreds of masks for the covid pandemic.&nbsp; Sewing and knitting things for her nieces, nephews, and a long list of relatives was a favorite hobby… so was following the Nebraska Cornhuskers.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Joann and Maurice Proett.&nbsp; Survivors include husband Rick Weaver (Baldwin), daughter Becky Weaver (Baldwin), son Luke Weaver (Berryton, KS), stepson Jake Weaver (Omaha, NE), sisters Jeanne Gardner (Wayzata, MN), Nancy Stoltenberg (Lincoln, NE), Mary Kroupa (Omaha, NE), Susan Bowers (Norfolk, NE), Kris Wilkowske (Edina, MN) and brothers Daniel Proett (Roanoke Rapids, NC), Darren Proett (Fremont, NE), and Doug Proett (Hutchinson, KS).
