James L. Long, 74, Bennington, died Thursday, March 12, 2020 at the Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; Jim was born August 10, 1945 in Topeka to Lafayette and Ethel (Morgan) Long.

Jim and Saundra Welch were united in marriage on June 13, 1964.&nbsp; He worked as a machinist for Union Pacific Railroad for 35 years.&nbsp; Jim was also a longtime member of the United Church of Bennington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; and half-brother, Robert Lester.

Survivors are his wife of 55 years, Saundra; sons, Gary (Catherine) and Greg; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, March 18 at the United Church of Bennington.&nbsp; Memorials may be made to the church.

Joyce Dockins, age 80, entered into rest on March 13, 2020 at the Ottawa County Hospital, Minneapolis, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on July 20, 1939 in Clyde, Kansas to Waldon and Gladys (Raff) Huggerth.

She was a 1957 graduate of Clyde High School.

On August 13, 1959 she married Kenneth G. Dockins at the Christian Church in Clyde.

Joyce worked for 14 years as a Library Aid at USD 224 Clifton-Clyde School District. She also worked 14 years at the Ideal Market, Clyde, Kansas.

Joyce loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.

She was a member of the Christian Church, Clyde.

She is survived by her 2 sons, Greg Dockins (Cindi, Gerald Dockins, of Clyde; granddaughter, Trisity Gurney (Christopher) and their children Taylor, Braxtin, Ezra, Isaac and Maizy, Clay Center; Granddaughter, Nicole Hamel, (Fiancé Codi, and their children Keegan &amp; Kynlee; Step-grandsons, Josh Gilmore (Adam, Dan (Tori) Gilmore and their children Mia, Alex, Bonnie, Izahic, and Adam Gilmore and sons Braden and Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny “Doc”, parents, Waldon and Gladys, grandson, Jason Dockins, 3 sisters, Juanita Huncovsky, JoAnn Fregon, Barbara Arpin and their dog “Buddy”.

Jeffery Scott Bushong, 52, died March 10, 2020. He was born Feb. 26, 1968 at Ft. Belvoir, VA., the son of Jerry and Mary Lou (Kauffman) Bushong. Jeffrey was dedicated to his country, serving 20 years in the Army and retiring in 2007. He was currently working as a Production Manager for Schwann’s Food Company. He was a proud and loving husband, father, brother, and friend.

Jeffery is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lou Bushong, and his father, Jerry William Bushong.

He is survived by his wife, Jessica Rae (Nicoll) Bushong; his four children: Danielle (Jarrod) Janzing, 29, and Courtney Renee Bushong, 26, of Wichita, KS, Delilah Lou Bushong 2, and Windsor Scott Bushong, 2, of Salina, KS; and 2 grandchildren. Jeffery is also survived by siblings: John Frank(Sonia) Bushong, and Melinda Mae Bushong of San Antonio, TX, and his nephew, Michael Aaron Bushong of San Antonio, TX.

A Memorial Reception will be held for Jeffery at the Tony’s Event Center at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2020.

Inurnment services with Military Honors will be held at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery, Manhattan, Ks on Friday, March 20th at 10am.

Terry Lee Hopkins, 69, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2020. He was born July 28, 1950, in Salina, Kan. He was a lifelong resident of Salina.

Terry was preceded in death by parents, Quentin "Hoppy" and Meryl Hopkins and Nadine Hopkins.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Christina; sons, Richard, Jeremy and Jason; sisters, Darla Simpson, Michele Gahman and Leann Burger; and grandchildren, Jacob, Gaige, Noah, Coleson, Elijah, Rylee and Ricki.

Terry graduated from Salina High School in 1969. He worked with his father as a carpenter, owned and operated Body Shop Supply in Salina, and was on the board of directors and a substitute teacher at Salina Tech.

His family was most important to him and his proudest achievement. Terry was an avid, lifelong Chiefs fan and celebrated the Super Bowl victory with family, just as he wanted, shortly before his death. He participated in motor cross and stock car racing for much of his life and still enjoyed riding until his death. He was a lover of dogs and had many favorites throughout his life. He is survived in death by his four-legged friend, Ozzy.

Terry wanted a celebration of life ceremony with friends and family. It will be held at a later date and announced via social media. Family will be there to greet relatives and friends.

Terry Lee Hopkins



Roxane (Sullivan) Russell, 65, of Solomon passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2020. Roxane was born in Salina on June 24, 1954. She was the first-born daughter of Joan Sullivan of Niles and the late Jim Sullivan.

She graduated from Solomon High School with the class of 1972. Her education was continued at Marymount College and Kansas Wesleyan University, where she received her nursing degree.

She spent her life serving people. First as the big sister to her five siblings. Then as a registered nurse. She was a big part of the heart team at Salina Regional Hospital from its inception. After retiring, she used her creative talents to make beautiful cross stitching, extensive writings, and a variety of artworks.

She always gave her support to her family and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Roxane is survived by her children, William Russell-Pestinger (Adrianne, Emily Adams, Cody Russell (Kaitlyn); mother, Joan Sullivan; brothers, Russell Sullivan, Richard Sullivan, Ronald Sullivan; and sister, Renee Donaldson; grandchildren, Ian, Kloe, Carter, Bentley, Jarett, Malorie, and Cole.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Rock; and niece, Rachelle.

Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 am, Tuesday, March 17th, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Solomon, Kansas.

Leslie Ann Jones, 44, of Salina, passed away on March 4, 2020 at her home after a courageous eight year battle with stage four breast cancer.

Leslie was born April 12, 1975 in Wichita to Robert and Mary Kirk (deceased) and spent most of her life living in Salina.

It would be wrong to say that Leslie lost her battle to breast cancer because she battled the disease, fighting and out-living her short 2-5 year life expectancy.

Leslie is survived by her children, Nicholas Allsman, Mickaela Allsman, Emma Jones, Samuel Jones, her father Robert Kirk, sister Nancy Martin and brothers Steven Kirk and David Kirk

She was a 1993 graduate of North Central High School, Indianapolis, IN. and attended Kansas State University.

Leslie was a loving mother and enjoyed watching her children grow up. On any given day you could find her at a school event photographing her children

Her passions were writing, photography and crusading for breast cancer awareness and The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge program in Kansas City. You could say Leslie really came alive and found herself after being diagnosed with breast cancer with her writing, speeches, walks and crusading for breast cancer awareness.

Leslie authored a self-awareness blog post for five years that you can still access as a writer, one of Leslie's stories about her fight with cancer was featured on the American Cancer Society's website MakingStridesWalk.org as a story of hope and another story appeared in Arianna Huffington's Thrive Global website. She also spoke at the National Associate Wellness Challenge (sponsored by Kroger) and appeared on the cover of the Kansas City Health &amp; Wellness Magazine

"When do you know when the story is over? When is it okay to let go of the pain and angst and just get over it already?" (from her blog post Dec 31, 2012, one year after being diagnosed)

Maria Inez Hernandez, 72, Salina, loving mother and grandmother, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2020.

Maria was born on June 27th, 1947 in Salina, To Joseph and Marjorie (Martin) Sanchez. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1965. Maria was a homemaker raising her two children. She enjoyed cross stitching, reading, watching her favorite television shows and spending quality time with her family. She was known for her baking and her infectious laugh and made huge impacts on many people's lives. Maria adored joking around with others and always brightened up the room with her witty remarks. Maria always extended her hand out to those in need. She seemed to have a hug to share, and is remembered as a delightfully vibrant and compassionate soul.

Maria is preceded in death by her parents, three nieces and one nephew.

Left to cherish her memory include her children; Bryan Hernandez (Joy) and Sonya Hernandez, both of Salina. Her beloved grandchildren; Justin Hernandez (Lauren, Inman; Marissa and Jarred Hernandez-Mitchell, Salina; and Tre Ponting (Destiny, McPherson. Maria Inez Hernandez

Daryl O. Stone, 72, Minneapolis, died Monday, March 9, 2020 at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis.&nbsp; He was born October 4, 1947 to O.H. “Mike” and Helen Elaine (Jenkins) Stone.

Daryl was a 1965 graduate of Ada High School and he served in the United States Navy on the USS Nathan Hale.&nbsp; Daryl and Leah Herpich were united in marriage on October 4, 1975.&nbsp; He worked for Woodruff Farms and as a salesman for Dub Johnson and Sons.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of the Minneapolis Lions Club where he served in many capacities.&nbsp; Daryl was also a member of the Ottawa County Foundation Board.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sharon Kimmel.

Daryl O. Daryl O. Stone

Opal Marie (Loomis) Thompson was born in Jewell County, Kansas, to Charlie Loomis and Nellie Bly (Dye) Loomis on January 26, 1930, and passed away at Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kansas, on March 9, 2020, with family at her bedside.&nbsp; She was the youngest of ten children.&nbsp; All of her siblings have preceded her in death, including brothers, Ora, Donald, and Jack, and sisters Ethel, May, Lucille, Alice, Pearl, and Esther.

Opal attended school in Otego, Kansas and Concordia, Kansas, where she graduated from high school in 1948. She then worked as a soda clerk and cashier at a Concordia grocery.&nbsp; While working there, she met a tall, blond, blue-eyed young farmer.&nbsp; She made him double thick shakes when he would come in the store, and those shakes, with her gorgeous face and figure, caught his attention. She married Floyd Thompson on her 20th birthday, January 26, 1950.

Opal worked as a housewife and mom, raising four children: Dixie Marie (10-09-1951, Linda Jayne (9-22-1954, Tom Scot (9-10-1956, and Bret Lynn (10-5-1964). Later she ran Hilltop Kennels, with several breeds of dogs, which she sold locally, country wide, and internationally.

She worked as a cashier in the Phillips Shop and Bon Marche. She was a favorite clerk of many, who would ask for her when they came in the store.

After she retired, she enjoyed her time with her husband, Floyd, her kids and grandkids. She loved doing crafts, quilting, sewing, photography, and playing games. She had a house dog named Peggy, that was her “baby” and she spoiled her rotten. She was very supportive of any activities her family was involved in. She kept scrapbooks of newspaper clippings from achievements.&nbsp; She was generous to a fault, always slipping a dollar or two in our purse or pocket when she could.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, all 9 of her siblings, and a granddaughter, Teresa.&nbsp; Surviving are children, Dixie and her husband Dennis Barnes of Clyde, Linda Lambert of Fairbury, and sons, Tom and his wife Cindy Thompson of Norway, and Bret Thompson of Concordia, as well as eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Memorial Services for Opal will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Norway on Saturday, March 14, 2020, at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Dennis Beckmann officiating. Committal services following the service at Valley Cemetery, rural Norway.

The family will greet friends at the Norway Community Center prior to the service from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm, where a luncheon will be served by the Ladies Aid of the Church.

Bertil Emmett Malm, 82, of Lindsborg passed on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Bethany Home, Lindsborg.  Bertil was born April 22, 1937 in Lindsborg, KS to the late Emmett and Myrtle (Borgstrom) Malm.  
     

Bertil graduated high school in Lindsborg.  

He also served in the Air National Guard.  

On March 14, 1959, Bertil married Marilyn Nelson, at Bethany Lutheran Church. 

 
     A lifelong Lindsborg resident, Bertil grew up and worked on the family farm for most of his life, and was a rural mail carrier for 18 years prior to retirement . 

 His life was full of activities.  Bertil always enjoyed the various programs and sporting events his children and grandchildren participated in. He cheered for and supported the Smoky Valley Vikings, Bethany Swedes, and Kansas State Wildcats.
     

He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Marilyn;  sons: Larry Malm (Tami) of McPherson, KS, Ronald Malm (Kelli) of Augusta, KS, and Douglas Malm (fiance - Holly Myers) of Lindsborg ; grandchildren: Conner, Bailey, Megan, Brock, Logan, Brandon, and Carley; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Special family friends include Cheryl Malm and Kathlynn Jackson.

Terry Lee Myers, 71, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 12:56 p.m., Tuesday, March 10th, 2020 while in the company of family members, at McPherson Hospital.

Terry was born in Lyons, Kansas on August 30, 1948, a son of Helen Mae (Huffman) and Lloyd Robert "Bob" Myers.

Terry attended the Little River grade school and graduated from Little River High School, Little River, Kansas in 1966, the last year before consolidation with Windom and Geneso. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he honorable served in the Vietnam War. After his service to his Country he attended Hutchinson Community College, Hutchinson, Kansas.

He was a member of Little River Congregational United Church of Christ.

Terry Lee Myers was united in marriage to Barbara Joy Nelson on January 30, 1971 at South Gate, California. The young couple established their first home together in South Gate until June of 71, when they moved to Little River, Kansas. This union was blessed with two daughters, Tina and Terryl. In 1992 the couple moved to McPherson.

Through the years Terry worked for TM Deal Lumber yard, Little River, was an operator for MAPCO, worked at the Conway ISO Plant, worked for the Rice County Builders in Little River, worked maintenance supervisor for the Hutchinson Correction Facility until his retirement in 2004. He also owned and operated Myers Rentals in McPherson.

Terry was a member of the American Legion Post in Little River, Kansas and was a volunteer Fire Fighter for Little River. Terry enjoyed golfing, fishing, working on his rental houses and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 49 years, Barbara Myers, of McPherson, Kansas; his daughter's, Tina Kelso and her husband Mike, of Langdon, Kansas and Terryl Kasper and her husband Nicholas, of Newton, Kansas; his siblings, Bob Myers and wife Marilyn, of Florida, Karen "Kim" Halbert and husband Kurt, of Little River, Kansas, and David Myers and wife Patty, of Lyons, Kansas; his three grandchildren, Bruce Kelso and wife Allisha, Curt Kelso and wife Casey, and Ashley Kelso; his three great-grandchildren, Emma Kelso, Jaxson Kelso, and Grayson Medlin; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Danny Myers and a nephew Matthew Myers.

Following Terry's wishes there will be no services.

Caroline Louise (Wahl) Peterson died March 10, 2020 in Clay Center. She was born on the family farm near Gorham, Kan. on Sept. 6, 1934. She was the youngest of six children and enjoyed a great childhood of being spoiled!

Caroline was valedictorian of her class and graduated from Gorham Rural High School in 1952. She then studied at K-State, earning a degree in home economics education in 1956.

Caroline faithfully attended church at First Lutheran in Manhattan, where she met Don Peterson, also a K-State student. They were good supporters of the Lutheran Student Association, which met every Sunday evening for a light meal. They both ran for president of LSA and Don won.

Don was in ROTC and became an Air Force officer in July 1955. Don and Caroline were married April 23, 1956 in Danforth Chapel on the K-State campus.

After Caroline completed her degree, she joined Don at Vance AFB in Enid, Okla., beginning a marriage of something new every day, with many moves due to Don’s 26-year military career. Caroline was an active member of the Air Force Officers Wives Association, mentoring wives who were new to the military world.

The couple bought their first land in 1968 when Don was stationed at RAF Alconbury in England. After Don’s retirement, Caroline was active in the farming and ranching operation with her husband. The couple won the Washington County Soil Conservation &nbsp;Award in 1988 and Caroline was a member of the Natural Resource Conservation Service committee.

Caroline, a lifelong Lutheran, enjoyed daily devotionals as well as attending church to hear the pastor’s message and the beautiful music. She was an organist and pianist and taught piano lessons at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Palmer to ensure that the church would always have music.

She was an avid book reader and also enjoyed multiple magazine subscriptions to stay abreast of current affairs.

Don and Caroline were blessed with four children: Ann (Tracy) Caine of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Charles (Margaret) Peterson of Lawrence, Kan.; Cynthia (Johnny) Guest of Florence, S.C., and Debra (Ron) Peterson of Overland Park, Kan.

Caroline was preceded in death by Don, who died in 1995, and her parents and four brothers. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, as well as her sister, Norma Strecker of Galatia, Kan.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 21, 2020 at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, Kansas with Pastor Nile Buch officiating.&nbsp; A private family burial will take place on the family farm next to her husband. Clifford H. Swarthout, 83, died March 8, 2020 in Clay Center.&nbsp; He was born February 26 in Wayne, New York, the son of Harry C. and Etheleen (Sumner) Swarthout. Clifford grew up in Wayne, New York.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Army.&nbsp; Clifford married Sandra Smith on September 6, 1956 and they moved to Kansas in 1957.&nbsp; They would later divorce.&nbsp; He married Diane Baldwin on July 3, 1971.&nbsp; Clifford was a heavy equipment operator, small engine repairman, and delivered newspapers for several publications.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister, one granddaughter, and one great granddaughter.

Al’s life began on January 13, 1925, the son of Albert and Vercy (Mauck) Gantz in Anthony, Kansas. He served his country during WWII in the US Navy from 1943-1946 and married Ruth Louise Peters on August 9, 1947, in Oaklawn, Illinois. Al worked for the Soil Conservation Service and enjoyed natural photography, gardening and antique clocks. He worked on and repaired clocks and was a member of the National Clock Association.

His loving family includes his daughters, Barbara Doyle of Richardson, Texas, Alice Martin (Tom Holtgrew) of Bonner Springs, Kansas; son, Howard Gantz (Donna) of Kingman, Kansas; grandchildren, Brian Doyle (Amy, Stephen Doyle (Angela Capio, David Gantz (Brittany Lagemann) Krystal Gantz Fensky, Geoffrey Martin (Angie Flax, and Andrea Martin; six great-grandchildren, Rose, Stella, Max, Bella, Benjamin, and Lois; brother, Ralph L. Gantz of Greenville, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth and a brother, Delbert Gantz. Al passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2020, at the age of 95 years old.

LINDSBORG -&nbsp;Pastor Herbert Nicholas Johnson Jr., of Lindsborg, passed away Friday, March 6, 2020. He was born April 19, 1935, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Pastor Herbert N. Johnson Sr. and Pearl Thyrina (Johnson) Johnson.

His childhood was spent in New Jersey and Miami, where he graduated from Coral Gables High School. He attended the University of Miami briefly, worked for two years, then transferred to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., graduating in 1959. The summer between his junior and senior years of college he went to Marine Corps Officer Boot Camp at Quantico, Va., and attained the rank of sergeant. It was during this period that he had a calling to enter the ministry.

He married Nancy Jo Lindstrom following his graduation from college in 1959 and they moved to Rock Island, Ill., for his seminary training at Augustana Lutheran Seminary. He was ordained into ELCA in 1963. He served churches in Kansas and Missouri. His last parish was Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, where he served from 1980 to 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy; daughters, Kristine Davis (Gary) and Carrie Koons (Rod); son, Marty Johnson (Danelle); six grandchildren, Thyra Davis, Taron Davis (Liz, Shelby Kendrick (Tyson, Samantha Koons, Delaney Johnson and McKinley Johnson; and two great-grandchildren, Anniston Kendrick and Chord Christian.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 13, in the fellowship hall at Bethany Lutheran Church, Lindsborg. Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, in Elmwood Cemetery, with memorial service to follow at 11 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church.

Frederick Eugene Schwindt, 84, died Saturday, March 7, 2020. He was born June 13, 1935, in Coffey County, Kan., to George and Mary (Rich) Schwindt.

He married Della Marie Marion on Jan. 9, 1955, in Woodson County. He loved his family, music, building houses, and building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes. He was well-loved by many because of his open, friendly generous nature that welcomed everyone he met.

Survivors include his wife, Della; siblings, Mary Schrock, George "Bud" Schwindt (Liz, Naomi Rose; Paul Schwindt (Joyce) and Ruth Anne Johnson (Richard); six daughters, Joy Rothfuss (Eugene, Cindy Aramowicz (Jerry, Nancy Hendricks (Rick, Sonya Hoppock (Martin, Angela Chestnut (Larry) and Ellen Schwindt (Bill Marvel). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Billy Hoppock.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 13, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Funeral celebration is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at Belmont Church of the Nazarene, 2632 Highland Ave., Salina.

GYPSUM -&nbsp;Fred E. Meyer, 84, of Gypsum, passed away Monday, March 9, 2020. He was born Sept. 18, 1935, in Carlton, to Jesse and Thirza (Jones) Meyer.

He attended Chapman High School and graduated in 1953.

Fred married Mary Jo Karber on July 19, 1955. They had five daughters of whom he was extremely proud.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Mary Jo, of the home; daughters, Jeanette Leander (Bill, of Gypsum, Pat Belt (Dan, of Lakewood, Colo., Debbie Koster (Jim, of Bennington, Diana Budke (Dennis, of Hays, and Carol Craver (Kevin, of Gypsum; grandchildren, Chelsy, Sarah, Chad, Jennifer, Kyle, Craig, Brian, Travis, Cory and Casey; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Virgil Meyer, Idelle Ade, Willie Meyer, Karl Meyer, Lola Beemer, Betty Sexton, Glen Meyer and Albert Meyer.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, with family greeting friends from 5-8 p.m., and rosary service at 7 p.m., all at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Lena was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir. She worked various jobs in Minneapolis. She never knew a stranger and she was known for her love of sports and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, L.W.; and sister, Janet Howland.

Ruth Eleanor Trued, 92, of Lindborg, passed away on March 8th, 2020, at Bethany Home, in Lindsborg, Kansas.

Ruth Eleanor Trued, 92, of Lindborg, passed away on March 8th, 2020, at Bethany Home, in Lindsborg, Kansas.Ruth was born February 14, 1928, in Ruleton, Kansas, the seventh of eleven children to the late Seth and Martha Duell. Ruth graduated from Sherman Community High School in 1946, and received a BM in Music Education from Bethany College in 1950. She was married to the late Reverend Donald Edward Trued on June 1, 1953, in Goodland, Kansas.Ruth had a passion for music and always had a song in her heart. She worked as a music teacher, and served as a missionary in Tanzania, Africa, from 1955 to 1962. After returning to the United States, she settled in Glen Rock, New Jersey, where she enjoyed being a full time mother to her children and a homemaker for several years prior to returning to employment as a music teacher and working in real estate. In 1982, she moved to Olathe, Kansas, and then in 1985 to Lindsborg, Kansas. She enjoyed partaking in Lindsborg activities. Her faith for her Lord caused Ruth’s life to be marked by service to others; Ruth was president and member of the Retired Church Worker and Meals on Wheels, volunteered with the Lindsborg Hospital auxiliary, and served as a weekday church schoolteacher for over 20 years. She participated in the Bethany College Messiah Music Festival for over 20 years. Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
