Kenneth Bruce Summers, 68, of Salina, passed away September 19, 2020. Ken was born November 2, 1951 in Salina, to Herb and Dorothy Summers.

Ken lived an amazing life while often putting others before himself and making sure his family lived an even better life and opportunities than he had. He was a proud graduate of Salina High in 1969, a school where he met the love of his life. Ken spent most of his working years managing grain elevators in many different cities and states. He also had the privilege of being elected as a city councilman while in St. John, KS. In his early years, Ken could often be found traveling the Mid-West with some of his best friends playing in weekend Putt-Putt tournaments. Later in life, he traded those weekend tournaments for weekend trips to play poker, see his grandkids, watching the Chiefs, and spending time with his wife.

Ken is survived by his wife Betty Sue (Heck), daughter Stacy, and son Bruce (Mary Beth) along with three grandkids, Karsen and Conley Summers and Simone Kitchens. Additionally, he is survived by five siblings (Jim, Linda, Becky, Cathy, and Jeanie) and many other caring family and friends.

Visitation services will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th St, Salina, KS. There will then be a graveside service at 10 a.m. at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, 2020 E. Iron Ave, Salina, KS on Thursday, September 24th, followed by a lunch reception at Belmont Nazarene, 2632 Highland Ave, Salina, KS. Current mask and social distancing guidelines will be followed.

Larry E. Garrione Sr., 79, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family on September 17, 2020.

Larry is survived by his brother Greg Garrione, his children Becky (Bill) Braden, Tracy (Sherry) Garrione, Stephanie (Mike) Bell-Martinez, Serena (John) Heil, as well as seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfonso and Josephine Garrione, his brothers Fr. Robert and Gilbert Garrione, and his eldest Son Larry Garrione Jr.

Services will be held at Ryan Mortuary on Wednesday, September 23rd at 10 a.m.

Survivors include her son James Rogers of Aurora, CO; 3 daughters; Jacque Abell of Phillipsburg, KS, Denise Miller of Gardner, KS &amp; Renita May of Wellington, KS; her sister, Doris Schumann of Lawrence, KS; 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren &amp; 1 great great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 25 at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Dennis Haarer officiating. Donald Phelps was a former truck driver, and courier for Conklin cars.

He is survived by his wife Linda L. Phelps, also survived by his sons Michael D. Phelps, Steven R. Phelps and wife Christine A. Phelps of Delavan WI., Bryan Scott Phelps and his wife Jill D. Phelps, and daughter Crystal D. Phelps and sister Cheryl Oleson of Oregon.

Don had seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He was proceeded in death by his father George L. Phelps and his mother Edna I. Phelps. Also his son Jeffery Allen Phelps, and a brother Jerry A. Phelps.

Larry Allen Walle, 77, passed away Sunday, September 20 at Salina Regional Health Center. 

Born on April 6, 1943 in Salina, Larry grew up on the family farm near Culver, Kansas. It was there that he became an avid outdoorsman, and especially loved fishing. In addition, Larry learned to play trumpet by ear, and if he heard a song once, he could play it&nbsp;beautifully. He went on to become an accomplished, talented and well-known trumpet player throughout the Salina area. 

At the age of 18, in 1961, Larry became a firefighter with the Salina Fire Department. Soon after, he served his country during the Vietnam War, joining the US Navy, stationed aboard the USS Constellation. In the Navy, Larry served as Machinist Mate and was invited to join the prestigious bugle corp. Upon his return from the Navy, Larry met and married the love of his life, Diane. Until the day he died, he would tell anyone she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Larry became a loving dad to her daughter, Michelle, and together Larry and Diane had four sons: Craig, Michael, Eric and Mark. Soon after Craig was born, the family relocated to McPherson, where Larry became Captain with the McPherson Fire Department. While Captain, he received a commendation for a flood water rescue in which he risked his own life to save the lives of two young boys.

Larry was also a talented carpenter and drywall specialist, and enjoyed working part time with Joe Miller Construction Company. Larry and Diane also designed their own home, which Larry built himself. Eventually, the family returned to Salina, where Larry became a master group machinist with Phillip's Lighting, retiring there in 2010. Larry was known for his outspoken personality, positive attitude and sense of humor. Wherever Larry went, he touched many lives, and was a friend, mentor and inspiration to so many.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Geneva Walle, his brother, Eugene Walle, and his nephew, James Curtis Walle.

He is survived by his sister, Joanne Potts. Larry will be dearly missed by his wife, Diane; his daughter, Michelle Lilly; his sons, Craig, Michael, Eric and Mark; his grandchildren;

Adrian Stafford, Tristan Lilly, Grace Walle, Theresa (Tess) Walle, Regan Walle and Vivian Walle; and his great grandsons, Brenden Schell, Jaden Stafford, and Julian Stafford.

Friends and family are invited to a rosary on Larry's behalf, to begin at 6 pm Wednesday, September 23 at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina, with a visitation to follow. Larry's funeral will be held Thursday, September 24, at 10 am at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Internment will be at All Saints Cemetery, Salina, with military burial honors presented by the U.S. Navy.

Geraldine “Gerrie” Bernice Nichols was born on June 8, 1928, the daughter of John W. &amp; Daisy Alva (Moss) Hull, in Wichita, Kansas and she passed away on June 30, 2020, at the age of 92, in Harrah, Oklahoma.

Geraldine married Morris E. Nichols on August 26, 1950 in Wichita, and to this union, they were blessed with three children. &nbsp;Geraldine worked as a travel agent for Braniff Airlines and a homemaker during her lifetime. Morris’s career took them to Henderson, KY and Ridge Manor, FL until his retirement.&nbsp; In 1992 they settled in Franklin, N. C., where they enjoyed their life in the mountains. &nbsp;They also enjoyed traveling for many years in their RV visiting Canada and 41 of the United States.&nbsp; After Morris’s death, Gerrie returned to the town she loved when they were first married, Belleville, KS.&nbsp; She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Belleville. Gerrie spent her final years residing in Oklahoma to be near her cousin Molly Reid.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Morris of 58 years, and her five year old daughter, Kathy Ann. She is survived by her sons, Michael Nichols (Shari) of Wakefield, MA, and Stephen Nichols (Anna) of Archbold, OH. &nbsp;Geraldine is also survived by her grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Thomas, Joshua and Matthew John, her sister-in-law Ruea Reed of Boulder City, NV, and her cousin Molly Reid of Edmond, OK, other nieces, nephews and friends. A special thank you to Harrah Nursing Center and Centennial Hospice for taking care of Gerrie in her final months.

Geraldine “Gerrie” Bernice Nichols

Leona Jane Medina was born on September 26, 1969, in Crescent City, California, the daughter of Richard and Lola (Spates) Ray. Leona passed away peacefully on September 17, 2020, at the age of 50 years, 11 months and 22 days.

Leona grew up in Crescent City, graduating from Crescent City High School. She was a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde (Oregon), and was a proud member of the Jehovah’s Witness. One of her favorite scripture passages was John 5:28-29 (NWT) “Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out…”

Leona is preceded in death by her sister Stacy Kestler. She will be forever remembered by her children: son Jose Edu Medina-Ray and his wife Sierra of Belleville, Kansas, and daughter Chelsie Leal of Medford, Oregon. Leona loved her grandchildren, Fox Medina-Ray, Grey Medina-Ray, Mekhi Sanders and Emire Leal, who will cherish the memories of their grandma forever. Leona is also survived by her mother, Lola Phelan of Crescent City, California, and sisters Annette Martinez and Lori Ray.

Leona passed away peacefully on September 17, 2020, at the age of 50 years, 11 months and 22 days.Leona grew up in Crescent City, graduating from Crescent City High School. She was a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde (Oregon), and was a proud member of the Jehovah’s Witness. One of her favorite scripture passages was John 5:28-29 (NWT) “Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out…”Leona is preceded in death by her sister Stacy Kestler. She will be forever remembered by her children: son Jose Edu Medina-Ray and his wife Sierra of Belleville, Kansas, and daughter Chelsie Leal of Medford, Oregon. Leona loved her grandchildren, Fox Medina-Ray, Grey Medina-Ray, Mekhi Sanders and Emire Leal, who will cherish the memories of their grandma forever. Luye was born March 27, 1945 at Walla Walla, Washington and passed away on September 18, 2020 at her home in rural Cuba, Kansas at the age of 75.

She attended the University of Texas at ElPaso, Texas where she studied accounting and business.

She was united in marriage to Delwin D. McElroy on December 10, 1969.

Dawn enjoyed a variety of crafts and had a passion for Quilting.&nbsp; She spent many years creating quilts for family and friends and their children

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Donald and Sharmane Maye Luye.

She is survived by her husband, Delwin McElroy of rural Cuba, Kansas, five sons, Douglas McElroy of Great Falls, Montana, Martin McElroy of Florissant, Colorado, Andrew McElroy of Cuba, Kansas, Jason McElroy of Alliance, Nebraska, William McElroy of Scandia, Kansas, one daughter, Carla Shirriffs of Pocatello, Idaho, other relatives and many friends.

Phyllis M. Kopsa, was born April 26, 1931 to George and Lola (Dettmann) Edwards at their home, 3 miles east and ½ miles south of Mahaska, KS and passed away on September 17, 2020 at the Belleville Health Care Center, at the age of 89 years, 6 months, and 21 days.

Phyllis attended Hopewell Schoolhouse for eight years and then attended and graduated from Narka High School with the class of 1949.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Phyllis was married to Charles (Chuck) Gertison on February 19, 1951 and to this union was born, Peggy Lee, Rebecca Sue, and Charlotte Elizabeth.&nbsp; Chuck preceded her in death in 1966.&nbsp; Phyllis then married Robert (Bob) Kopsa on January 21, 1967.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Phyllis helped raise his 4 children, Vaneta, Rebecca, Kevin and Lana. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Phyllis worked various jobs and raised the children as Bob farmed.

Phyllis was a long time member of the American Lutheran Church, Belleville, KS.

Phyllis’ hobbies included fishing, camping, finding a good antique, traveling, spending time with loved ones, gardening and knitting.&nbsp;&nbsp; She loved her flowers whether they were inside the house or outside.&nbsp; She also took great pride in her knitting.&nbsp;&nbsp; She made over a thousand knitted hats and mittens for homeless veterans and local churches.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lola Edwards,&nbsp;Brother, Kenneth Edwards, sister, LaDonna Edwards, first husband, Chuck Gertison, daughter, Peggy Lee Iwert, and son-in-law, Thomas Young.

She is survived by her husband Robert (Bob) Kopsa, and son Kevin Kopsa both of Chester, NE; daughters, Rebecca (Mick) Gausmen of Chester, NE, Vaneta (Gerald) Moore of Munden, KS, Rebecca (Arlan) Benyshek of Cuba, KS, Charlotte Young of Chester, NE and Lana Kopsa of Lincoln, NE; 17 grandchildren, Frederick Iwert, Nichole (Sam) Bays, Martina Iwert, John (Diane) Iwert, Adam (Abby) Gausman, Amber (Jesse) Versch, Andrew (Julinne) Moore, Luke (Tracey) Moore, Daniel Moore, Kyle Joy, Laura Joy,&nbsp; James Thieme, Logan (Erica) Thieme, Eva (Derek) Mumm, Calese Young, Kathleen (Anthony) Kuhlmann and Celia Young; 24 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, many cousins, other relatives and friends.

Frances “Kay” Keck, the daughter of John P. Savage and Susan Ellen (Olmstead) Savage, was born September 26, 1938 in Wellington, KS and passed away on September 16, 2020 at Republic County Hospital, Belleville, KS at the age of 81 years, 11 months, and 20 days.

In her early years, Kay lived in Dodge City, KS, moving to Mound Valley, KS where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Mound Valley High School in 1957.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kay worked as a Southwestern Bell switch board operator in Mound Valley while in high school and later worked for McCoy’s Greenhouse in Cherryvale, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp; She then worked at Electra in Independence for a short time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kay then worked at Hasselmann’s in Independence, KS for many years as a florist.&nbsp;&nbsp; She later was employed at Emerson Electric Mfg. in Independence for nearly 20 years until her retirement.&nbsp; After her retirement, she worked at Twig’s Floral in Independence.

On March 14, 1957, she was united in marriage to Donald W. Pope and they were later divorced.&nbsp;&nbsp; On February 9, 1968, she was united in marriage to Thomas J. Keck.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tom and Kay made their home in the Independence area and later moved to the Cherryvale, KS area.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tom preceded her in death on December 27, 2018.&nbsp;&nbsp; Recently, Kay has been living near family.

Kay was a member of the Eastern Star Eva Chapter, Elk City, KS serving as Worthy Matron several times.&nbsp;&nbsp; She was a member of the Pumpkin Creek Survivors, and was an active member of the Cherryvale Christian Church and the New Hope Christian Church, Cherryvale.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas J. Keck; infant twin children:&nbsp; Eugene and Becky; infant Brother: Robert, and one great grandchild, Nora Belle Robertson.

Kay is survived by her children, Kathy Kelley of Independence, KS, Dawn (John) Surber of Belleville, KS, and Theron (Mathilda) Pope of Bartlesville, OK; four grandchildren, Benjamin Kelley of Kansas City, MO, Cody (Bonnie) Robertson of Thornton, CO, John (Shelby) Pope of Skiatook, OK; and Jay Surber of Kansas City, MO;&nbsp; six great grandchildren,&nbsp; Camryn Robertson, Nonie Pope, Michael Robertson, Emma Robertson, Riley Robertson, and Wylie Pope; other relatives and friends.

Tammy Rannee Jensen was born May 18, 1972 to David Allen Jensen and Jean Marie Snyder in Belleville, Kansas. She passed away on September 16, 2020 at the age of 48 years, 3 months and 29 days in Beloit, Kansas.

Tammy went to school in Concordia, Kansas while living with her mother and stepfather George Gassert. After finishing her freshman year, she came to live with her father, David and stepmother Cheryl Jensen. She graduated from Beloit High School.

After graduation she worked at the Buffalo Roam and Red Rooster as a dish washer. She lived on her own at Pine Haven with help. She moved to Junction City to be with her mom and where she had Dakota for a short while. She then moved back to Mankato.

She lived at the Downs Care and Rehabilitation for a year to help control her blood sugar. When released, she moved to Beloit with help from OCCK to a group home. After a few months she was read to move to her own apartment, again with OCCK assisting her in daily living. OCCK was instrumental in keeping her independence.

She enjoyed bowling, shopping and drinking Diet Dr. Pepper. She looked forward to having her son spending the weekend with her, just to hang out. She always had a positive attitude and made many friends.

Those that celebrate her life are her father, David Jensen (Cheryl); Son, Dakota; sisters Carolee Ali and Angela Richard (Bret); brother Paul Jensen (girlfriend, Shira Brown); and 2 nieces and many other relatives.

Cleora Pearl McClaskey, 84, of Marion, Kansas and formerly of McPherson, passed away peacefully surrounded by family following a brief illness at 9:18 a.m., Friday, September 18th, at Via Christi, St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas.

Cleora was born on her parents homestead in Washington County, Kansas, on May 6, 1936, a daughter of Frances Irene (Reyser) Hicks and Russell P. Hicks.

Cleora attended Manning country school and graduated from Agenda High School, Agenda, Kansas in 1954.

Cleora Pearl Hicks was united in marriage to John Phillip McClaskey on May 27, 1956 in Agenda, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Agenda. This union was blessed with the birth of three children, two sons and one daughter, Martin, Susy, and Michael. In 1958 they moved to McPherson, Kansas.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church McPherson, Kansas.

Cleora was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. Through the years she worked for the Agenda Bank as a bank teller, then when she moved to McPherson she worked for Harder Electric as a bookkeeper, B and K Tax Service, CM&amp;S Building Center as bookkeeper, and was a co-owner with her husband John and son Mike and operated Cabinets &amp; More, Inc., until her retirement. She later worked for U.S.D. 418 in food service, and worked at the Cedars Health Care Center as an office receptionist.

Cleora was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 Ladies Auxiliary of McPherson. Cleora enjoyed her family especially her grandkids and great-grandkids. She was a great hostess, loved entertaining and preparing meals for all kinds of events. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and pitch with her extended family. The family went on many camping trips. She was a great cook, baker, and enjoyed going on little vacations. She looked forward to the holidays and always had her house decorated for each one. She was a fan of Kansas State University.

She is survived by her children, Susy Gullett and husband Buddy, of Camdenton, Missouri and Michael McClaskey and wife Melanie, of McPherson, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Susan Elmborg, of Topeka, Kansas; her sister, Priscilla Phillips, of Salina, Kansas; her brother, Kenneth Hicks and wife Joann, of Marion, Texas; her beloved feline companion, Kitty; her three grandchildren, Adam Gullett and wife Andrea, Kaitlin Drallmeier and husband Jake, and Joseph McClaskey; her five great-grandchildren, Adeline Drallmeier, Alexa Drallmeier, Myles Drallmeier, Olivia Gullett, and Amelia Gullett. many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Cleora was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Frances Hicks; her son, Martin McClaskey; her husband John McClaskey; her sisters, Wanda Bowman; and her brothers, Lyle Dean Hicks, and George Hicks.

Graveside service will be held at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 26th, 2020 with Reverend H. Dick Reynolds, Jr. officiating.

Cleora Pearl McClaskey, 84, of Marion, Kansas and formerly of McPherson, passed away peacefully surrounded by family following a brief illness at 9:18 a.m., Friday, September 18th, at Via Christi, St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas.Cleora was born on her parents homestead in Washington County, Kansas, on May 6, 1936, a daughter of Frances Irene (Reyser) Hicks and Russell P. Hicks.Cleora attended Manning country school and graduated from Agenda High School, Agenda, Kansas in 1954.Cleora Pearl Hicks was united in marriage to John Phillip McClaskey on May 27, 1956 in Agenda, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Agenda. This union was blessed with the birth of three children, two sons and one daughter, Martin, Susy, and Michael. In 1958 they moved to McPherson, Kansas.She was a member of First Presbyterian Church McPherson, Kansas.Cleora was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. Through the years she worked for the Agenda Bank as a bank teller, then when she moved to McPherson she worked for Harder Electric as a bookkeeper, B and K Tax Service, CM&amp;S Building Center as bookkeeper, and was a co-owner with her husband John and son Mike and operated Cabinets &amp; More, Inc., until her retirement. She later worked for U.S.D. 418 in food service, and worked at the Cedars Health Care Center as an office receptionist.Cleora was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 Ladies Auxiliary of McPherson. Cleora enjoyed her family especially her grandkids and great-grandkids. She was a great hostess, loved entertaining and preparing meals for all kinds of events. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and pitch with her extended family. The family went on many camping trips. She was a great cook, baker, and enjoyed going on little vacations. She looked forward to the holidays and always had her house decorated for each one. She was a fan of Kansas State University.She is survived by her children, Susy Gullett and husband Buddy, of Camdenton, Missouri and Michael McClaskey and wife Melanie, of McPherson, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Susan Elmborg, of Topeka, Kansas; her sister, Priscilla Phillips, of Salina, Kansas; her brother, Kenneth Hicks and wife Joann, of Marion, Texas; her beloved feline companion, Kitty; her three grandchildren, Adam Gullett and wife Andrea, Kaitlin Drallmeier and husband Jake, and Joseph McClaskey; her five great-grandchildren, Adeline Drallmeier, Alexa Drallmeier, Myles Drallmeier, Olivia Gullett, and Amelia Gullett. many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.Cleora was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Frances Hicks; her son, Martin McClaskey; her husband John McClaskey; her sisters, Wanda Bowman; and her brothers, Lyle Dean Hicks, and George Hicks.Friends are invited to call on Friday, September 25, 2020 from 5 pm to 7 pm at Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson.Graveside service will be held at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 26th, 2020 with Reverend H. B. Paul Elmore, 90, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 7:18 p.m., Thursday, September 17th, 2020 peacefully, at Harmony Home.

Paul was born in Galva, Kansas on October 24, 1929, a son of Elizabeth Grace (Aelmore) and Harvey Allen Elmore.

Paul attended the Galva Grade school, and graduated from Galva High School, Galva, Kansas in 1948. Following his education Paul joined the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean War and honorably served his Country and received the Army Occupation medal Germany.

Paul was united in marriage to Carolyn Janette Cole on March 10, 1957 at the First Christian Church, McPherson, Kansas. Carolyn died on February 20, 2015.

He was a member of First Christian Church McPherson, Kansas.

Through the years Paul worked in the Galva area oil fields as a roust about, worked for his uncles on their farms and around in the neighborhood, was a Truck Driver and hauled Hay for Otis Bryant Trucking Firm and sand for Jack Bryant Trucking in Nebraska. He later started working for the National Cooperative Refinery Association now known as CHS, in November of 1952 in the Feed Unit, and through the years also worked in the Laboratory, in Maintenance, shift work in the Boiler House, and retired in 1992 as a Water Oil Treater.

Paul was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 and a member of the American Legion Post 24; a member of the McPherson Barbershop, helped volunteered with Hunters Safety for many years. Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, was an Indian Artifact Hunter with quite the Arrow Head Collection a lot from McPherson County and some from all over the U.S.

He is survived by his loving and devoted daughter, Melinda Williams and husband Kelly, of McPherson, Kansas; his favorite grandson, Aaron Williams, of McPherson, Kansas.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carolyn J. Elmore, his brother, William Harris "Willie" Elmore, his sisters, Dorothy Mary Kimble, Virginia Lee Allen, and Pauline Elizabeth Schnorr; and his favorite granddaughter, Courtney Nicole Williams.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Christian Church, McPherson.

Funeral service will be held at First Christian Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2020 with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating.

Burial will be at the McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kansas with Military honors presented by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 and American Legion Post 24.

John Thies passed from this life to his heavenly home on Wednesday, September 16, 2020. John was born May 20, 1948, the third child of Clyde and Bernice Groening Thies of Marion, KS. Survivors in his immediate family include brother, Wayne Thies (Sandra) of Newton, and sister Phyllis Bull of Bartlesville, OK. John was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Robert Bull, and niece Renee Copenhaver.

As a young child, John loved to watch the chickens on the farm. Until 1990, when he was 42, John lived in Marion with his mother, Bernice. Many Marion residents knew John as he rode his bike all over town. From birth until he moved away, John attended Marion Christian Church. His parents Clyde and Bernice farmed and later owned and operated Thies Food Center on the hill. His trademark caps and shirts were evidence of his love of K-State. His joy was eating and sipping for hours on a large diet Coke!

In 1990, John moved to an apartment in Hillsboro. He was a client of Northview Developmental Services, Newton, which subsequently became Rescare, Newton. John said “I’m retired now” when he was 65. He then spent his daytime hours with other older clients, in the retirement wing of Rescare day services building. Many loving caregivers have been John’s helpers and companions and all of them expressed how sweet John was. John’s very special cousin Merle Knak, lived with him in a Rescare Home in Newton, KS. Born six months apart, they were special buddies their whole lives.

Nieces and nephews and their children have all loved their Uncle John their whole lives as well: Charlotte Thies Waner (Ty) and children Chisholm, Mckinnon, &amp; Kellen of Marion; Eric Thies (Carri) and daughter Savannah of Lenexa; Thurston Thies (Heidi) and children Kariana, Bronalea and Beckett of Augusta; and Natalie Thies and children Chance, Caroline, George and John of Newton. Another nephew is Darrell Bull and children Madellyn and Mitchell of Houston, TX. John had MANY aunts and uncles as his mother, Bernice, was one of 16 Groening siblings.

We are all celebrating the memory of our brother and Uncle John who taught us all to have tender loving hearts toward each other and all those in the world who are “special”. Heaven is richer and we are poorer with his passing.

Family will gather with friends on Sunday, September 20 from 2-3:30 pm at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion, KS. Graveside service will follow at 4:00 PM at the Marion Cemetery.

Funeral services for Cecil L. Overlease, age 89, of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 24, 2020 at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery near Manhattan, Kansas with Reverend Dale Engle officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Cecil passed away Tuesday, September 15, at his home in T or C.

He was born May 24, 1931 in Vona, Colorado the son the Cecil F. and Jennie Wava (Rodabaugh) Overlease. When Cecil was small his family moved to Denver where he grew up working in a drug store as a soda jerk and at a laundry mat.

Cecil went to telegraph school as the Korean War was starting up. He served his country in the United States Army as a telegraph operator. Following the war Cecil returned home and eventually became a Depot Agent for the Rock Island Railroad. Cecil worked the Rock Island for several years in Kansas and Minnesota. While he was stationed in Dresden, Kansas Cecil met and married Ramona Spresser. To this union four children were born, Greg, Sandy, Barb, and Ron.

With Depot Agent positions fading, Cecil and family moved to Scott City, Kansas where he worked for the Ford dealership in Leoti as a mechanic. He then became the Shop Foreman in Wright’s Chevrolet in Scott City for many years eventually going to welding school in the evening. When Cecil received the welding training, he went to work for the Missouri Pacific Railroad which became the Union Pacific Railroad as a Blacksmith in Scott City and later Colorado until his retirement on June 28, 1991.

In 2000, Cecil moved to T or C for warmer weather. Cecil enjoyed fishing, hunting, and reading anything he could find with history.

He is survived by his Children Greg and his wife Annette of Stockton, Kansas, Sandy and her husband John Cearley of Plainville, Ron and his wife Cindy of Abilene, Kansas; his loving sister Lila Rahmoeller of Denver, nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving daughter Barbara Seib, brothers Ed, John, Donald, Virgil, sister Donna Kimball, and his parents.

David D. Atkinson, 67, Minneapolis, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 16, 2020.&nbsp; He was born August 19, 1953 in Salina to Noble and Ruby (Miller) Atkinson.

David and Deborah Bos were united in marriage on November 1, 1975.&nbsp; He was lifelong self-employed carpenter.

Survivors are his wife, Debbie; sons, Jeremiah (Jennifer) and Matthew; sister, Nolene Roberts; and two grandchildren, Jacob and Megan Atkinson.
