Irma Ruth Beery Giles Howell passed away October 5, 2021 at McPherson Hospital in McPherson, Kansas just weeks before reaching age 97. She had been a resident of The Cedars in McPherson for more than 20 years and was a McPherson College Class of 1949 graduate. She was born in Lintner, Illinois October 28, 1924 to Lester and Bertha (Cripe) Beery and graduated from Cerro Gordo (IL) High School in 1942.

She married William (Bill) Giles in 1947 while they were attending McPherson College, then spent most of their working years in and around Peoria, Illinois, retiring fully in 2000 at The Cedars Independent Living in McPherson. She was the last of her generation having been preceded in death by brother Everett and sisters Iva and Leona (Petcher). Also preceding her in death were husband Bill (2001), son Gary of Elbing KS (2010), and granddaughter Jessica Stevenson (2016) of McPherson.

Surviving are Gary’s widow Sandy Giles (Brewer), Merle (Erika) Giles of Mahomet IL, Marianne Peeples of Phoenix AZ, and Marcia Stevenson of Montreal MO, along with 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Ruth survived her second husband Weldon Howell who passed in 2012. Surviving are stepchildren Veneta (Paul) Ediger of McPherson, Nolan (JoAnn Reed) Howell of McPherson, Norman (Mei-Feng) Howell of Fremont CA and Janice (Terry) Wokaty of Jacksonville AR, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Ruth taught public elementary school for 26 years, including three years in a one-room country school near Cerro-Gordo, IL. She sang in the McPherson College choir as well as in church choirs well past age 90. She taught piano lessons for 15 years following retirement and ran a bed-and-breakfast for 15 years. She was active on the leadership board at her home Church of the Brethren in Peoria and was once the IL/WIS District Moderator. She earned a graduate degree post-retirement in music theory from Bradley University. She was known to play piano regularly at The Cedars and most recently played from memory for her family just days before passing. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the McPherson Church of the Brethren, with Rev. Chris Whitacre officiating. Internment of her cremains will be at the McPherson Cemetery. Norma’s life began on March 1, 1926, on the family farm in rural Florence, KS. She was the daughter of George and Ida (Roberts) Clark. Norma attended rural Summit grade school and graduated from Burns High School. 

She was united in marriage to Leroy Riggs in 1946 after he returned from serving our country in the United States Navy. Their last home was in Marion, KS. 

Norma was very talented and learned to play the piano by ear at an early age. In later years, she taught herself how to read music and played for many weddings, funerals, and other occasions. Norma was the church organist for the Marion Christian Church for many years. She was also the librarian at the Marion Public Library for 25 years. 

Leroy and Norma both enjoyed their family, travelling and working in their lovely garden and yard.

 Norma is survived by her brother Gordon Clark of El Dorado, sisters Margaret Matz of Peabody and Sherol Nightingale of Burns and many loving nieces and nephews. 

She passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at St. Luke’s Living Center in Marion. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Leroy, four brothers, infants Oswald and Willard Clark, Bill Clark, and Ivan Clark: two sisters, Maude Gaines and Joyce Barker. 

Her family will gather with friends on Friday October 22, 2021, from 12-1 p.m. at the Marion Christian Church where her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. led by Pastor Carl Helm. She will be laid to rest in Burns Cemetery. Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion is serving the family.

Bo’s life began on February 28, 1957, the son of Hiram and Dorothy (McLain) Young in Newton, Kansas. He graduated from Fredric Remington High Class of 1975 and then attended Butler Community College on a football scholarship. He married DeVesta Arlene Smith on August 21, 1977 at the Christian Church in Potwin, Kansas.

He was a contract welder and retired as a welding supervisor at ConFab in El Dorado. He loved his family and enjoyed barbequing, creating welding projects with benches and artwork, fishing, hunting, and working in his backyard. His loving family includes his wife of 44 years, DeVesta, of the home; son and his wife, Ryan and Rachel Young of Jefferson City, Montana; daughter and her husband, Adriane and Grant Bowlin of Whitewater, Kansas; grandchildren (nicknames from grandad in quotes) Matthew “Roscoe” Young and Lilli “Skeeter Bump” Young, Jude “Rufus” Bowlin, Julian “Spanky” Bowlin and Jentry “Fish Bait” Bowlin; brothers, Hiram (Mary) Young of Salina, Oklahoma, Charles Young of El Dorado, Kansas, Floyd (Tina) Young of Kansas City, Missouri; sisters Evelyn Shultz of Potwin, Kansas, Elizabeth Pugh and Edna Place both of Wichita, Kansas; brother-in-law Raymond (Nancy) Smith of Rose Hill, Kansas and many nieces and nephews. He graduated from Fredric Remington High Class of 1975 and then attended Butler Community College on a football scholarship. He married DeVesta Arlene Smith on August 21, 1977 at the Christian Church in Potwin, Kansas.He was a contract welder and retired as a welding supervisor at ConFab in El Dorado. He loved his family and enjoyed barbequing, creating welding projects with benches and artwork, fishing, hunting, and working in his backyard. His loving family includes his wife of 44 years, DeVesta, of the home; son and his wife, Ryan and Rachel Young of Jefferson City, Montana; daughter and her husband, Adriane and Grant Bowlin of Whitewater, Kansas; grandchildren (nicknames from grandad in quotes) Matthew “Roscoe” Young and Lilli “Skeeter Bump” Young, Jude “Rufus” Bowlin, Julian “Spanky” Bowlin and Jentry “Fish Bait” Bowlin; brothers, Hiram (Mary) Young of Salina, Oklahoma, Charles Young of El Dorado, Kansas, Floyd (Tina) Young of Kansas City, Missouri; sisters Evelyn Shultz of Potwin, Kansas, Elizabeth Pugh and Edna Place both of Wichita, Kansas; brother-in-law Raymond (Nancy) Smith of Rose Hill, Kansas and many nieces and nephews. Bret’s life began on August 25, 1960, in Marion, KS. He was the son of Delvin L. O’Dell and Kathryn Ann (Park) Armstrong. Bret was a 1978 graduate of Marion High School. 

He was united in marriage to the former Randi L. Schoby on August 22, 2005, in La Junta, CO. 

Bret had owned Bret’s Butcher Block and the hardware store in Florence and most recently was a service technician for Propane Central in Wichita. He was active on the Peabody Fire Department serving for twenty years. Prior to moving to Peabody, he served on the Florence Fire and EMS from the age of eighteen. Bret was also an avid woodworker and enjoyed camping with friends. 

His greatest joy was his family which includes his wife Randi of Peabody; daughters Megan (Joel) Thomas and Alysha (Alex) Haines, both of Marion; stepdaughters Letitia (Jarrod) Fry of Hesston, and Toni (Taylor) Oxford of Rincon, GA; grandchildren Rylee Thomas, Clayton Thomas, Tessa Haines, Rhett Haines, Luke Haines, Dylan Fry, Dawson Fry, Jackson Fry, Nick Fry, Zoey Fry, Tristan Oxford, Ayrabella Oxford, Ensley Oxford, Zelie Oxford, and Ezra Oxford; his parents Delvin (Mary) O’Dell of Emporia and Kathryn Armstrong of Marion; and sisters Rhonda (Eldon) Hett of Marion and Brenda (Bill) Clouse of Smithville, MO. 

Bret passed away at his home on Monday, October 18, 2021. 

His family will gather with friends on Wednesday, October 27 from 6-8 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion. His memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 28 at 11 a.m. at the Florence United Methodist Church led by Pastor Steve Hysom.

Bret Wade O'Dell

Les’s life began on February 23, 1935, the son of Harlan McClendon and Opal (Miller) Johnson in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was 13 years old when he accepted the Lord as his Savior in a small Baptist church in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He attended Los Alamos schools and graduated with a degree in English from New Mexico Western University in Silver City, New Mexico.

At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a sergeant in the Korean War for four years from January 1952 to January 1956. He was awarded the badge of expert marksmanship. When he returned home, he married Teresa Ann Gonzales on August 18, 1956 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Les loved outdoor activities including gardening, fishing, and hunting.

He taught English in several high schools and later became a jeweler in Richardson, Texas. Les and Teresa lived there for 32 years. When he retired, they moved to Newton, Kansas where they were members of Koerner Heights Church. He volunteered to teach Release Time Bible School and served at Source of Light, a correspondence prison ministry. He loved reading and memorizing scripture. One of the legacies that he leaves is his twenty-plus Bibles that were full of highlighted and crossreferenced, with handwritten notes. He devoted his life to reading and studying God’s Word.

His loving family includes his wife of 65 years, Teresa of the home; children Steve McClendon (Ursula) of Marble Falls, Texas, Byron McClendon (Cindy) of Carrollton, Texas, Elizabeth Claassen (Greg) of Whitewater, Kansas, David McClendon of Richardson, Texas; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harlan McClendon and his mother Opal (McClendon) Johnson.

Les passed away peacefully into his loving Savior’s arms on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the age of 86 years old.

His family will gather with friends on Thursday, October 21, from 5-7 p.m.&nbsp;at Lamb Funeral Home, 120 S. Main, Whitewater, Kansas. Private internment will be held in Green Valley Cemetery in Furley, Kansas.

He was 13 years old when he accepted the Lord as his Savior in a small Baptist church in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He attended Los Alamos schools and graduated with a degree in English from New Mexico Western University in Silver City, New Mexico.At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a sergeant in the Korean War for four years from January 1952 to January 1956. He was awarded the badge of expert marksmanship. When he returned home, he married Teresa Ann Gonzales on August 18, 1956 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Les loved outdoor activities including gardening, fishing, and hunting.He taught English in several high schools and later became a jeweler in Richardson, Texas. Les and Teresa lived there for 32 years. When he retired, they moved to Newton, Kansas where they were members of Koerner Heights Church. He volunteered to teach Release Time Bible School and served at Source of Light, a correspondence prison ministry. He loved reading and memorizing scripture. One of the legacies that he leaves is his twenty-plus Bibles that were full of highlighted and crossreferenced, with handwritten notes. He devoted his life to reading and studying God’s Word.His loving family includes his wife of 65 years, Teresa of the home; children Steve McClendon (Ursula) of Marble Falls, Texas, Byron McClendon (Cindy) of Carrollton, Texas, Elizabeth Claassen (Greg) of Whitewater, Kansas, David McClendon of Richardson, Texas; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his father, Harlan McClendon and his mother Opal (McClendon) Johnson. Les passed away peacefully into his loving Savior’s arms on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the age of 86 years old.His family will gather with friends on Thursday, October 21, from 5-7 p.m.&nbsp;at Lamb Funeral Home, 120 S. Main, Whitewater, Kansas. Private internment will be held in Green Valley Cemetery in Furley, Kansas. Marla Joy Jorgensen, age 69, left this earthly life on Thursday, October 21, 2021, surrounded by her family at the Cloud County Health Center, Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born in Belleville, KS on March 23, 1952 to Edgar Lee and Wanda Lee (Cline) Kalivoda.

Marla graduated as a co-valedictorian from Concordia High School in 1970.&nbsp; She later graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering and a master’s degree in accounting in 1981.&nbsp; Her career as an accounting manager and business controller for Conoco Philips took her to many places around the globe including London, Australia, Alaska and Indonesia, to name a few.

She returned to Concordia upon her retirement from Conoco and proceeded to open and operate Marla’s Joy Tea House and later Common Ground Coffee House.&nbsp; She was an active member of the Living Hope Foursquare Church and was a member of the Concordia Rotary Club.

She married her Concordia high school classmate Lee Gale on Aug. 12, 2017.

Many of those who know Marla would use words to describe her such as: intelligent, exploring, curious, community, giving, dedicated, entrepreneurial, strong-willed, survivor, creative/crafty and trusting.

She is survived by her husband, Lee Gale, Concordia; sons James Jorgensen (Natalie), Houston, TX, and Keith Jorgensen, Houston, TX; sister Anita Ricablanca (Dennis), San Diego, CA; brother Lee Kalivoda (Elaine), Maple Grove, MN and grandchildren Kaleb, Noel, Isaac, Levi and Joy.

Marla was preceded in death by her parents.

It was Marla’s wishes to be cremated and a memorial graveside service will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, October 25, 2021 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia with Pastor Dwight Whitead officiating.&nbsp; The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.&nbsp; Friends may sign the register book from 1-5 p.m., Friday, October 22, 2021 at the funeral home.

Rex Arthur Nelson, 58, of Brookville, passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2021.&nbsp; He was born September 20, 1963, in Salina, to Loring and Rosemary (Gronewaller) Nelson.&nbsp; In his middle school years, he was a foreign exchange student in Japan.&nbsp; 

He married Delisa E. Edgerton on June 15, 1991 at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church.&nbsp; 

He worked for the city of Salina for many years as well as Phillips Lighting.&nbsp; He was currently employed at Tony’s Pizza.&nbsp;

He was united in marriage to Leah Ellen Goodner on August 14, 1994. Dan was a family man, and very dedicated to his wife and his family.

Dan passed away at his home with his family at his side on October 18, 2021, at the age of 71 years, 2 months and 4 days.

Elmyra June “Elly” Briggs, 86, of Lindsborg passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Bethany Home. Elly was born June 4, 1935 on a farm south of Lindsborg, KS to the late Martin and Alma (Nelson) Rasmusson. Elly loved Lindsborg and enjoyed her Scandinavian American heritage.

Always fun and adventurous, Elly attended Johnstown and West Kentuck one-room schoolhouses in McPherson County before graduating from Lindsborg High School in 1953 and Bethany College in 1959. Elly was a teacher for 26 years at elementary schools in Salina, KS; Albuquerque, NM; and Topeka, KS.

Elly married Capt. Frederick Briggs on November 4, 1967 in Topeka, KS. The family lived in Alabama and Texas before settling in Topeka in 1974 where they were active members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. In 2011, Elly and Fred moved to Lindsborg and attended Bethany Lutheran Church. Elly travelled the world and could talk easily to everyone.

Elly is survived by her husband Frederick Briggs; daughters Christine Steward (Shawn) and Deborah Briggs (Bo Andersen); son David Briggs; sister Elma "Mim" Johnson; brothers Erwin, Rolland, and Jarold Rasmusson; and grandchildren Cailan and Jarrett Steward and Zack and Martin Andersen; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Elly is preceded in death by her parents; first husband Hubert Fry; and brothers Ermal and Eugene Rasmusson.

Visitation with the family will be Friday, October 22 from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg, KS.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 23 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 320 N. Main St., Lindsborg, KS, with Pastor Chris Deines officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Roger became ill on July 6, 2018. He fought his illness long and hard, but on October 12, 2021, he went to be with his Lord and Savior. His parents, one sister, Gayle, and one brother, Patrick, precede him in death.

His wife Joyce survives him along with four daughters, Laura (TJ) of Florida, Nicole, Heidi and Jessica of Hillsboro; five grandchildren; three brothers, Walter, John, and Glenn; one sister, Nancy; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Roger enjoyed living his life with Joyce and his girls wishing he could’ve made many more memories. How thankful we are that we have good memories of times with him.

She was a retired Pentecostal pastor and Christian counselor. Connie was born on March 4, 1946, in Topeka, KS, the daughter of William O. and Lola V. (Kitterman) Brown. She graduated from Perry High School in Perry, KS. On September 16, 1965, Connie was united in marriage to Harris T. “Sonny” Martin. Sonny preceded her in death on November 2, 1992. She attended The Father’s House in Hutchinson, KS. Survivors include: two children, H. Todd Martin (Vicki) of McPherson, KS and Sonnie Martin of McPherson, KS; siblings Coleen Ramos of Lincoln, NE, Loren Brown (Mary) of Spokane, WA, and Leon Brown (Sheila) of Deer Park, WA; ten grandchildren, Lindsay, Tyler, Rebecca, Cierra, Jase, Kayla, Tayler, Luke, Alexis, and Jaron; one great-grandson, Hudson; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Lola Brown; husband Sonny Martin; sister, Barbara Brown; brother Pat Brown; and son Robert Martin. Jeff was a graduate of Capital City Christian School in Lansing, MI, and American Military University with a master’s degree in military history. 

He was united in marriage to the former Dawn Drake on October 2, 1982, in Lansing.

Most people that knew Jeff, knew him as a pastor but he was really a shepherd. He shepherded congregations all over the country before coming to Marion in 2012 to lead the Aulne Church. He touched the lives of so many people, showed them the true love of Christ over and over. Jeff loved to sing, to laugh and enjoyed his family so very much. John Robert Tucker, 70 of Salina, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021.

John was born here in Salina on September 5, 1951, to Thomas Reed Tucker and Val Doris (Mattson) Tucker.

Born and raised in Salina, John graduated in 1969 from Salina High School. He went on to attend Trinity International University, a conservative Bible-based college located in Deerfield, Illinois, earning a bachelor’s degree in history.

While in Illinois, John met the love of his life, Susan Elaine Berggren and swept her off her feet, marrying on December 1, 1973, in Moline, Illinois.&nbsp; They later became proud parents of two fine boys. Christopher Paul Tucker and Matthew Keith Tucker.

Upon marrying, John and Susan returned to Salina where John’s work ethic was established. He was hired at Western Auto that became the Advanced Auto distribution center, where he remained loyal to the company for 46 years.

 John not only was known for his strong work ethic, but he was also deeply involved in his church. John was a member of the Salina Bible Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. He had a strong belief and understanding of the bible, which he employed in instructing children and young adults in the scriptures. Additionally, He was a leader for the AWANA program for many years. In 2008 John became a member of the First Covent Church in Salina, where he was a proud and valued member of the choir.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

There are too many sides and aspects of John’s character and personality. From being an avid coin and postal stamp collector, to his love of professional sports teams, such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and Kansas State University.&nbsp;

Most importantly, John was a man of honor, integrity, with devotion to his family, his church and to every aspect of his life. As with John’s various interest, John never wavered, never doubted. He consistently strove to model Christ’s love in all his endeavors and to all he met.

John went to be with our Lord and Saviour on Saturday, October 16, 2021, preceded by his dearest family members, his beloved parents Thomas R. and Val Doris Tucker, and his sister Sharyl Tucker-Shank-Cavin.

Those left to lovingly remember John are his cherished and loved family, John’s beloved wife of 48 years, Susan Elaine; John’s two dear sons Christopher Paul Tucker and his wife Stella, of Irvine, CA., and Matthew Keith Tucker of Salina; brother Thomas R. Tucker of Choctaw, OK; his three adorable grandchildren Francesca Faye Tucker, Bjorn Kanan Tucker and Patrick Ezekiel Tucker.

Visitation will be Friday, October 22, 2021, with the family present from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 East Crawford, Salina.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 23, 2021, at the First Covenant Church, 2625 E. Magnolia Rd, Salina.

Interment will take place immediately following the funeral service at Roselawn Memorial Park, 1920 E. Crawford, Salina.

He went on to attend Trinity International University, a conservative Bible-based college located in Deerfield, Illinois, earning a bachelor’s degree in history.While in Illinois, John met the love of his life, Susan Elaine Berggren and swept her off her feet, marrying on December 1, 1973, in Moline, Illinois.&nbsp; They later became proud parents of two fine boys. Christopher Paul Tucker and Matthew Keith Tucker.Upon marrying, John and Susan returned to Salina where John’s work ethic was established. He was hired at Western Auto that became the Advanced Auto distribution center, where he remained loyal to the company for 46 years. John not only was known for his strong work ethic, but he was also deeply involved in his church. John was a member of the Salina Bible Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. He had a strong belief and understanding of the bible, which he employed in instructing children and young adults in the scriptures. Additionally, He was a leader for the AWANA program for many years. In 2008 John became a member of the First Covent Church in Salina, where he was a proud and valued member of the choir.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There are too many sides and aspects of John’s character and personality. From being an avid coin and postal stamp collector, to his love of professional sports teams, such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and Kansas State University.&nbsp;Most importantly, John was a man of honor, integrity, with devotion to his family, his church and to every aspect of his life. As with John’s various interest, John never wavered, never doubted. He consistently strove to model Christ’s love in all his endeavors and to all he met.John went to be with our Lord and Saviour on Saturday, October 16, 2021, preceded by his dearest family members, his beloved parents Thomas R. and Val Doris Tucker, and his sister Sharyl Tucker-Shank-Cavin.Those left to lovingly remember John are his cherished and loved family, John’s beloved wife of 48 years, Susan Elaine; John’s two dear sons Christopher Paul Tucker and his wife Stella, of Irvine, CA., and Matthew Keith Tucker of Salina; brother Thomas R. Chase was born on February 5, 2000 in Salina, KS, to Patrick and Wynette (Rodenbaugh) Donovan, Minneapolis, KS.

He lived his entire life at Minneapolis, KS.&nbsp; He attended Minneapolis public schools, graduating in 2018. He was known by most in high school as “Donny”. &nbsp;He was also known as “Tiny” by a select few. &nbsp;After high school he attended Hutchinson Community College to get his CDL license.

He worked at C &amp; R Plating, The Elevator, Ottawa County Road Department and was currently working for Crosson Family Farms.

Chase was very kindhearted and would help anyone he could whenever he could. He generously shared with anyone he came in contact with, expecting nothing in return.&nbsp; He was a “gentle giant” and was very happy and always having fun.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending time with family, his friends, and shooting guns. His short life was lived to the fullest.&nbsp; His love was driving trucks and his dream was to have his own someday. &nbsp;

He especially loved history and could talk for hours about it. He got to go on a dream trip to Europe seeing Berlin, Germany, Prague, Czechia, Auschwitz/Birkenau concentration camp, Poland, Krakow, Poland, and drove through Slovakia to Hungary, Budapest, Hungary and Vienna, Austria.&nbsp; He also traveled to Washington D.C. on another school trip with his little sister Emily.&nbsp;

He will never be forgotten and will be forever missed!&nbsp;Chase is survived by his parents Patrick and Wynette Donovan; older brother Shane (Mandy) Donovan, Minneapolis, KS; older sister Megan (Tim) Rusch, Junction City, KS; little sister and best friend Emily Donovan, Manhattan, KS; and nephews Camren and Clayton White, Junction City, KS and Easton, Jameson and Treyson Donovan, Minneapolis, KS; grandparents, Duane and Rena Donovan, Bloomington, NE and Wanda Rodenbaugh, Loomis, NE; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and other family.Chase was preceded in death by Grandfather Roy C.
