Dorothy "Dottie" Hoffman was born April 24, 1933 in Abilene the daughter of Emil Ripper and Carolee (Dickinson) Wilson. She was a lifelong resident graduating from Solomon High School. On July 5, 1950 she married Leroy “Junior” Hoffman. Together they farmed and Dorothy was a homemaker. Dottie was a member of the Emmanuel Church in Abilene and enjoyed crafting, bowling, golfing, and fishing with Junior. She also spent a great deal of her time volunteering at the Abilene Memorial Hospital at the front desk. She is survived by her son Lonnie and his wife Dhera Hoffman of Groton, South Dakota, her daughter-in-law June Hoffman of Chapman, seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Junior on November 4, 2010, her son Larry Hoffman, her grandson Troy Hoffman, and her parents. Funeral services for Dottie will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the Emmanuel Church in Abilene with Pastor Gordon McClure officiating. Her final resting place will be in the New Basel Cemetery south of Abilene. Her family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Jo Anne Marie "Jo" Olson, 68, of Salina, passed away Monday, January 31, 2022.&nbsp; She was born in Jacksonville, NC on August 2, 1953 to Mary and William Salvie.

She lived her childhood years in the San Diego area and graduated from Santana High School in Santee, CA.&nbsp; In her 20s, she moved to Houston where she worked for 27 years at an engineering firm and a valve supply company.&nbsp; She married her husband, Randy Olson, in Houston in 2004.&nbsp; She was an active member of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Houston.

Jo and Randy moved to Erie, CO in 2005 and lived there until retiring and moving to Salina in 2018.&nbsp; She enjoyed family trips, Kansas State sports, and an occasional camping or hiking trip with her husband.&nbsp; She also had an enduring love for her three dogs whom she called her children.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents.&nbsp; She is survived by her husband Randy, brother William Salvi and sister-in-law Susan Dinauer of Madison, WI, brother-in-law John Olson of Dallas, and nieces Nelia Salvi and Livia Salvi, both of Chicago.

Lindsborg, Kan. -- James M. (Maitland) Johnson, Jr. passed away Sunday, January 30, 2022, with Sally, his wife of 59 years and loving caregiver by his side.

Jim, as he preferred to be called, was born in Wichita, Kansas, May 23, 1942 to parents James Maitland and Lucille (Sole) Johnson, both of whom preceded him in death.

He is his survived by his wife, Sally (Harmon), whom he married on May 27th, 1962 in Kansas City; their son Michael Johnson and his wife, Theresa; grandchildren Kayla and Andrew; and a brother, Jim Sole.

He also had two brothers, Larry and Dennis Johnson, who preceded him in death.

Jim grew up in Lindsborg, attending local schools through high school, graduating from the Lindsborg Rural High School on May 26, 1960.

He worked at the Danielson-Johnson Funeral Home in Lindsborg and continued working as he also began his studies at Bethany College with the goal of becoming a teacher. &nbsp;

His education would be interrupted as he was tapped for service in the United States Army, in which he served from August 1966 to June 1969. He earned the rank of sergeant, served as a drill instructor, and served one tour of duty in Vietnam in the Infantry Division.

With his service complete, he returned to Lindsborg, worked what he called a series of “odd jobs” while continuing his studies at Bethany College and at the Kansas State Teacher’s College (now known as Emporia State) where he completed his bachelor’s of Sscience degree in education in 1974.

Jim began his educational career teaching English at Salina Central High School and, in 1975, joined the faculty at the Lindsborg Rural High School, where he taught English and journalism until his retirement due to a medical issue in 1991.

Jim was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather who was always there when you needed him. He was well known in the community, a friend to many, and a proud member of the American Legion in Lindsborg. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his hobby of woodworking, hunting and fishing.

There will be an informal, come-and-go celebration of life from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Community Room (at end of alley facing the street) at Bethany Home Cottages (404 W. State Street) in Lindsborg, Kan. on Saturday, Feb. 12. &nbsp;

Michael Leon McGaha was absolutely the most caring, loving, thoughtful, and amazing man.&nbsp; Michael left this world all too soon on February 2, 2022, at the age of 52 years old.&nbsp; He was born to Leon Eugene McGaha and Lois Marie (Kennedy) on December 30, 1969, in Newton Kansas.&nbsp;

Michael attended Salina Central High School and Kansas Wesleyan University before spending the bulk of his career at Exide Technologies.&nbsp; During his 32 years with Exide, Michael wore many hats.&nbsp; He held various leadership roles, including formation supervisor, superintendent, and department manager.&nbsp; His understanding of integrity, generosity, honesty, and couth is what made Michael an exemplary leader.&nbsp; These are the qualities that has earned him trust and respect from his fellow employees and gained friendships that will forever be cherished through time.

After 32 years, Michael was ready for a change.&nbsp; He left Exide to embark on a new journey with XPO Logistics.&nbsp; His colleagues would describe him as having an infectious smile.&nbsp; Michael’s unmatched energy and welcoming smile would light up any room.&nbsp; Whether you needed a good laugh or a shoulder to cry on, he was always there for you.

Michael was very passionate about his family, racing, and football.&nbsp; His devotion to his family was obvious in the way he loved and cared for them.&nbsp; They could always count on him for anything, come rain or shine, Michael would always be there no matter what.&nbsp; In the summertime you could find Michael at the racetrack with Leon and Chau.&nbsp; Football season consisted of Michael, Chau, and Boomer rooting for the OU Sooners.&nbsp;

Michael’s selflessness was endeared by all who loved him.&nbsp; He will forever be in our hearts.

Michael is preceded in death by his mother Lois M. McGaha in 2019.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Chau, his four beautiful children, Timothy McGaha (Destiny) and Tyler McGaha (Haley), both of Salina, Austin Huyhn and Brandon Huyhn, both of Kansas City, his father Leon E. McGaha, a sister, Matilda Pruitt (Eddie) of Park City and two beautiful grandchildren, Leon A. McGaha and Logan McGaha.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, February 8, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 E. Crawford Street, Salina.&nbsp;

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., also at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel.

Leland Wayne Nuss of Newton, Kansas passed away on February 4, 2022 at the age of 91. After several months of declining health, Leland died peacefully with his beloved wife Patricia and their children by his side.

Leland (Lee) was born in Hillsboro, KS on October 19, 1930 to father Charles Nuss and mother Anna (Matz) Nuss. Losing his father at the age of 10, Lee spent most of his childhood on a farm at Waldek, KS with his mother and older brother Allen. He enjoyed playing school sports where as a freshman, was a member of the Lehigh 1944 state basketball championship team. He later transferred to and graduated from Hillsboro High School.

Lee met and soon married his forever sweetheart, Patricia (Jost), in September of 1958. Throughout their 63 years of marriage, they weathered the ups and downs of life together while raising their three children - - Dale, Elaine and Jan. 

Lee was a farmer and cattleman for much of his adult life, and later went on to work for AMPI in Hillsboro. He finished his working career with the Hesston school district where he drove a school bus for many years. He loved his school bus kids, and they loved Mr. Nuss!

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Lee - - playing dominoes and pinnacle, family dinners, watching school sports (especially when his grandchildren were playing), pie, outdoor work/activities, 4th of July fireworks, ice cream, cattle, as well as discussing the weather and crop conditions with his fellow farming friends and family. 

But most notably, Lee was a man of strong faith and conviction. Being a Christian was always the foundation of his life. He was a life-long Lutheran, baptized and confirmed&nbsp; a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, KS.

Leland is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Allen (Virginia) Nuss, and a stillborn daughter. 

He is survived by his wife Patricia of Newton, KS; a son Dale (Becky) Nuss of Hillsboro, KS; daughters Elaine (Kent) VanBuskirk of Prairie Village, KS and Jan (Jim)Knobel of Lenexa, KS; seven grandchildren; three great-grandsons as well as his cherished nieces and nephews.

LeRoy W. Johnston passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Garden Terrace in Overland Park, Kansas. Leroy was 80. He spent his last ten years requiring full-time nursing care due to Alzheimer’s/dementia. Prior to the nursing home, he lived in Park City, Hays, and the majority of his life, in McPherson, KS. LeRoy was born near Coldwater, KS in 1941. The family made their way to McPherson. His father, Harold Johnston, was a teacher and coached basketball.

 LeRoy graduated from McPherson High School. He attended welding school and married Betty Nelson when both were in their early 20s. He adopted Betty’s three sons, Richard (Vickie) of Wichita, KS, Marty Olathe, KS, and Troy (Connie) of The Woodlands, TX, and later had a daughter with Betty, Michelle (Robert Alexander) of Kansas City, MO. The marriage ended in 1983. 

He has a brother, Charles, who lives in Downers Grove, IL. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two nieces and their families, and former wife, Betty Wait of Buckner, MO. 

LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Marie Johnston. LeRoy earned a living in his younger years as a welder but ultimately lost a good part of his hearing and endured back problems. He then worked for periods of time at Certain Teed, Swick-Guth, RC Williams Oil company and for many years, at Wichita Kenworth until his cognitive decline. He enjoyed building things and driving big rigs and heavy equipment. He was a licensed pilot with instrument rating as well. LeRoy enjoyed driving around on Sundays, watching TV and a big bowl of popcorn with a glass of cold milk. He often spent weekends helping others with projects or earning some extra money by creating/welding motorcycle trailers. He seemed to always find projects but also enjoyed boating and camping. When he lived in McPherson, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Services will be private and his final resting place will be next to his parents at McPherson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.

Richard Albert Popp was born to Solomon Popp and Mollie (Scheck) Popp on March 4, 1925 in Wheatland Township, Barton County, KS. He was the oldest of six children. 

Some of Richard’s fondest memories include spending lots of time helping his uncles on their farms. Richard was a very hard worker his entire life and passed that strong work ethic onto his children.

Richard attended school in Hoisington, KS, and graduated from Hoisington High School in 1943. Soon after, he met the love of his life, Charlotte Schepmann. They were married on August 12, 1945 and celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary just a few months before Charlotte passed away. Their marriage was blessed with three children – Richelle, Royce, and Chris.

Richard worked in the oil fields during his younger years, doing a variety of tasks, and eventually became a salesman for various oilfield service companies. The family relocated to different locations throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas over the span of 15 years. He and Charlotte decided to return home to Kansas, where he purchased a service station. Richard loved working on cars and being his own boss. After several years, they moved to west Texas to be in a warmer climate - and there they stayed for over 40 years.

Richard and Charlotte were very active in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod throughout their lives. Richard served as elder, trustee, and held a number of other leadership positions. He was active in the Campus Crusade for Christ ministry, the Gideons, and the Lutheran Laymen’s League. Richard was an avid fan of Billy Graham and Rush Limbaugh.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte Popp, son Royce Pope, grandson Logan Pope, great-grandsons Ivan Gengler and Jacoby Pope, great-granddaughter Cora Pope, parents Solomon and Mollie Popp, brother Marvin Popp, and sister Alice Foster.

 He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Richelle and Scott Gengler, daughter-in-law Jane Pope Meehan, son and daughter-in-law Chris and Mary Pope; grandchildren Shawn and Judy Gengler, Barry Gengler, Jeremy and&nbsp; Jessica Gengler, Kristin Gengler, Jordan Gengler, Evan and Christina Pope, Anne and Kyle Mead, Addison and Lori Pope, Ashley Pope, Lauren and Luke Hullett, Landon Pope, Brenna Pope, and Brooklyn Pope; 16 great grandchildren, brothers Vern and Bill Popp, and sister Velma Boepple.

Mr. Popp received his Crown of Life on February 1, 2022 at the age of 96.

Funeral service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood, KS with burial following in the church cemetery.

Michael is survived by his daughter Becky Good (Chris) of Beverly, KS; son Ben Bishop (Sunnie) of Lincoln, KS; brothers Steve Bishop (Linda) and Mark Bishop (Nadine); sisters Barb Phillips (Dick) and Cathy Brockway (Lonnie); and six grandchildren. Delmer Lee Meyer, age 74, entered into rest on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at his home in Concordia, Kansas. Delmer was born on April 23, 1947 to Elmer J. and Madeline (Christensen) Meyer in Superior, Nebraska. 

He grew up on a farm at Bostwick, Nebraska.&nbsp; 

He attended elementary school at Bostwick and graduated from Superior High School.&nbsp; He furthered his education at Central Community College in Hastings, Nebraska graduating with a degree in auto body repair. After graduation he worked in the auto body repair field and then in agriculture related positions where he became interested in the trucking business.&nbsp; He later established his own trucking company, Meyer Trucking, Inc.&nbsp;

Delmer married Mary Jean James on January 14, 1983 at the Concordia Wesleyan Church, Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Delmer’s hobbies included going to auctions and collecting, avid Nascar fan, Facebook, and most of all spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren.

Delmer attended the Concordia Wesleyan Church. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post #76, and a past Moose Lodge Member, all of Concordia.

Delmer was preceded in death by his mother Madeline, in 1956, by his father and stepmother, Elmer and Lorene Meyer, grandparents, and a nephew, Matthew Dickinson.

He is survived by his wife Mary of the home in Concordia, three children, Christipher Saunders (Elisabeth) Warren, VT; Donna Sue Franklin (Rick) Yukon, OK; Rebecca Scimeca (Bill) Caney, KS; 12 Grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, sister Carol (Glen) Mueller of Nelson, NE; brother Ron (Marilyn) Thomsen of Reno, NV; sister Cheryl (Arden) Russell of Webber, KS; sister Sharon (Doug) Dickinson of Seward, NE; brother Neil (Barb) Thomsen of Superior, NE; and sister Yvonne Meyer (Stuart Price) of Joplin, MO; good friend Chester Saunders, Concordia, KS; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia. Delmer’s wishes were to be cremated and a Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the Concordia Wesleyan Church, with Pastor David Redmond and Pastor Bob Burns officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia, Kansas.

Sherry Almquist, 75, passed away on January 31, 2022, after courageously battling Alzheimer’s disease for over 20 years. She was an incredible mother, an adored daughter, sister, aunt and cousin, a loyal and loving friend, a gifted counselor and teacher, and a beautiful human being with a smile that could light up a room. She will be missed terribly. She was born Sherry Sue Seaman on March 15, 1946, the fourth child of Neal and Ardith Seaman of Chapman.

She was an active student at Dickinson County High School, where she was involved in drama, cheerleading, music and student government. She was crowned homecoming queen her senior year and graduated in 1964 before continuing her studies at Kansas State University in Manhattan. Sherry graduated from KSU in 1969 and was the first person in her family to get a college degree. While at K-State, Sherry met and married Merlan Almquist of Assaria, and their children Eric and Kimberly were born several years later. Sherry and Merlan settled in Salina for many years, and although their marriage ultimately ended, their friendship did not. After being an amazing full-time mother, Sherry taught English at Salina Central High School from 1979-1987, and upon completion of her master’s degree from K-State, continued to work for the district as a counselor. After finishing her Ph.D. in 1995, she worked as a counselor in the student health center at Oklahoma State University. When she returned to Kansas a few years later, she worked as a clinical counselor in Salina, taught counselor education at Emporia State University, and worked as an elementary school counselor for the Topeka school district. Sherry leaves behind her daughter Kim Luce and son-in-law Chad Luce of Lawrence; her son Eric Almquist and daughter-in-law Jiffy Iuen of Los Angeles; her ex-husband Merlan Almquist of Athens, Ohio; several cousins and many nieces and nephews.

Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Seaman of Emporia, her brother Tracy Seaman of Chapman, and her beloved sister Merry Jo Cecil of Houston. Visitation will be at Londeen-Overlease Funeral Chapel in Chapman on February 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by burial at Indian Hill Cemetery.

She graduated from Tescott High School in 1957. Melba went on to attend Brown Mackie College in Salina and graduated with a business degree.

Melba was united in marriage to Richard E. Matthews at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Tescott. The couple established their home together in Salina and became members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Salina. This union was blessed with two children, Julie and Mitch.

Melba worked for Holsum Bakery before becoming a homemaker. She then proceeded to work for Beall Ladymon, Stage and Ash Enterprises.

Her pride and joy was her family. She loved attending activities and events of her grandchildren Madi, Cooper and Hope.

She was preceded in death by her parents. 

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Richard of Salina; a daughter, Julie Willems and son-in-law Matt and granddaughter Hope of Galva, Ks; a son, Mitch and daughter-in-law Dallas and grandchildren Madi and Cooper of Bennington, KS.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. with family present from 5-7 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2022 at Ryan Mortuary.&nbsp; There will be a private family funeral service with burial in Franklin Cemetery, Tescott.

Our beloved sister&nbsp;Bunny Lea Austin&nbsp;passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, February 3 at age 79 at Holiday Resort Nursing Home.

Bunny was a long time former member of Ray Avenue Baptist Church and then Church of the Cross United Methodist, and was active within the OCCK community.

 She loved music, dancing, bowling, roller skating, parties… and much more! Any Special Populations activity that “moved,” she was ready, willing and eager to go.&nbsp; She was the original “Energizer Bunny” and Miss Social Butterfly!&nbsp; Everyone said she was the “sweetest and friendliest person they knew with a beautiful smile,” but her family knew the strong-willed, outgoing, sassy, opinionated person she really was, and we loved her for it. Bunny never knew a stranger, and if she met you once, she remembered you for life.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Sylvia Irene Austin and brother Ronald Lee Austin.

Survivors include sisters Elaine Austin, Linda Mettner, and Susan Austin, all of Salina, and brother Larry Austin, Hays and numerous nieces and nephews.

We are so grateful to Holiday Resort Nursing Home for their wonderful and compassionate care of Bunny for the last three years.

Marlen Bruce Cleveland, 83, Minneapolis, passed away Thursday, February 3, 2022, at his home with his family at his side. Bruce was born February 6, 1938, in Concordia to Marvin and Helen (Uglow) Cleveland.

After graduating from Concordia High School, Bruce attended Kansas State University where he graduated with a bachelor of science in agricultural education. 

On August 24, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Gretchen Larson, in Concordia.

 Following his graduation from college, he started his teaching career in Courtland, KS and then moved to Minneapolis in 1964 where he taught until becoming a loan officer at the Ottawa County Bank. Bruce worked with agricultural loans until his retirement in 1991 from the United Branch of Bennington State Bank in Minneapolis.

He was a longtime member of the Minneapolis First United Methodist Church and served his community through his involvement in Lions Club, Ottawa County 4-H, Chamber of Commerce, American Heart Association, Economic Development Corp., U.S.D. 239 school board member, and he was a former president of the Bank Administration Institute.

Bruce was an avid K-State fan. He and Gretchen had season basketball and football tickets for many years until his girls became involved in school activities. He was a big supporter of his children and grandchildren in all their activities.&nbsp; He loved his family dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Marilyn Margaret Cleveland.

Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Gretchen; daughters Jody and her husband Mike Hamm, Deb and her husband David Pounds, and Jane and her husband Corey Alderson; brother Roger Cleveland and his wife Bonnie; grandchildren Kelsey and her husband Bryce Cathcart, Austin Hamm and his wife Hannah, Matt Hamm (Jenn), Tacy and her husband Alberto Contreras, Garrett Pounds (Andrea), Mara Pounds (Colton), Rikki and her husband Zach Seeberger, Kyler Alderson, and Ryann Alderson; and great-granddaughter, Nayeli Contreras.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, February 6 at Wilson Family Funeral Home, 405 Argyle, Minneapolis, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00. Private services will be held Monday at the funeral home with burial following in Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Bruce worked with agricultural loans until his retirement in 1991 from the United Branch of Bennington State Bank in Minneapolis.He was a longtime member of the Minneapolis First United Methodist Church and served his community through his involvement in Lions Club, Ottawa County 4-H, Chamber of Commerce, American Heart Association, Economic Development Corp., U.S.D. 239 school board member, and he was a former president of the Bank Administration Institute.Bruce was an avid K-State fan. He and Gretchen had season basketball and football tickets for many years until his girls became involved in school activities. He was a big supporter of his children and grandchildren in all their activities.&nbsp; He loved his family dearly.He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Marilyn Margaret Cleveland.Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Gretchen; daughters Jody and her husband Mike Hamm, Deb and her husband David Pounds, and Jane and her husband Corey Alderson; brother Roger Cleveland and his wife Bonnie; grandchildren Kelsey and her husband Bryce Cathcart, Austin Hamm and his wife Hannah, Matt Hamm (Jenn), Tacy and her husband Alberto Contreras, Garrett Pounds (Andrea), Mara Pounds (Colton), Rikki and her husband Zach Seeberger, Kyler Alderson, and Ryann Alderson; and great-granddaughter, Nayeli Contreras.Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, February 6 at Wilson Family Funeral Home, 405 Argyle, Minneapolis, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00. Ruth Marie (Kohr) Briggs, 87, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Thursday, February 3, 2022.

Ruth was born on January 6, 1935 to George and Viola (Cooley) Kohr of Salina. &nbsp;As the fifth of eight children, Ruth grew up in a large family in and around the Salina area, graduating from Salina High School in 1953. After high school, Ruth attended Kansas State College graduating in 1957 with a teaching degree in home economics.

During her senior year at K-State, Ruth met the love of her life, Stanley Edward Briggs, her future husband of just a week shy of 62 years and who preceded her in death in 2020.

Ruth’s well known and oft stated goal in life was to “become a teacher and marry either a preacher or a farmer.” She held her first teaching job as a home economics teacher in Marion, Kansas, while engaged to Stanley, a fourth generation Ottawa County farmer. On June 8, 1958, she and Stanley were united in marriage and the newlyweds began their life as husband and wife on the family homestead in Lamar. Ruth began teaching at Delphos High School and the two of them joined the First United Methodist Church of Minneapolis.

Life was never a dull moment for Stanley and Ruth as the two of them worked tirelessly to preserve Stanley’s family farm over the next few years before settling down to have children. Together they expanded the family’s holdings, creating a lasting legacy for their children and grandchildren that continues today, nearly 160 years after its original founding. Ruth was an active participant in all farm operations and supported her husband’s many varied endeavors throughout their long union. Such endeavors included returning to K-State after the birth of their fourth child so Stanley could finish his engineering degree and moving their family of six to various Midwest towns such as Hesston, KS, Bismarck, ND, and Beloit, KS before returning to the area to reside in Minneapolis with their two youngest children in 1981.

While her husband farmed, Ruth was the farm’s bookkeeper, commodity trader, logistics operator, marketing and sales representative, and self described “risk assessment officer, human resources officer and government regulations compliance officer.”

 Despite the full plate she had assisting with the operations side of the farm, Ruth was also fully present in the daily lives of her children and took an active role in their many activities and education. She was a dedicated den mother, room mother, carpool driver and party planner among everything else imaginable, always at the ready when need would arise and always with plenty of cookies, Snickers candy bars and pop. 

Ruth was an involved member of the Minneapolis First United Methodist Church serving on several committees, teaching Sunday School, preparing children’s sermons, volunteering with Vacation Bible School, cooking for numerous church events and programs such as the widely successful Methodist Church chicken dinners, working the concessions stand at the county fair every summer and nearly every other church-sponsored event. 

An avid bridge player, Ruth belonged to multiple bridge groups, both ladies only and with Stan in couple’s bridge. She was an active member of the Minneapolis chapters of EHU, Home Arts Club and PEO. Besides spending time with family and playing bridge, Ruth’s other greatest passions were sewing, especially making her daughter’s formal gowns, baking, attending estate sales, visiting museums, attending community theater, following K-State athletics and reading. She was quick to remind her children that she “read a book a day” and books were stashed and stacked in every corner of her house. It was not uncommon to visit Ruth sitting in her recliner with her book in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. Her passion for reading led her to become a trustee for the Minneapolis Library, a position with which she held in high esteem. Members of the Minneapolis community might also remember Ruth for the years she spent as the receptionist for local dentist, Dr. Fred Hargis.

Later in life, Ruth and Stan watched their four children marry and have children of their own. Ruth instantly became the world’s most enthusiastic grandma in 1990 when her first grandchild was born. Soon followed more boys and later even more Briggs boys! Her five grandsons kept her busy with their tornado like energy building forts, playing army, digging in the dirt with all the many Tonka farm toys and wrestling throughout her house – none of it forbidden and all of it very much to the delight of their doting grandma. In the mid-2000s, her next wave of grandchildren were born adding three beautiful granddaughters to the family, each of whom enthusiastically shared Grandma’s joy of baking, teatime with fancy china and dress up. Her grandchildren knew that what happens at Grandma’s, stays at Grandma’s and her home - full of sweet treats, toys that may or may not be allowed in their own home, and big grandma hugs - was the most magical of places for all eight grandchildren. Of all her titles, positions, and roles, it was being grandma that brought her the most joy and for which she is most revered.

As Ruth and Stan’s children spread their wings throughout the country, Ruth and Stan travelled to visit them. From nearby places like Oklahoma and Missouri to further away places such as Idaho, Minnesota, Florida, Seattle, Phoenix, Connecticut, Texas and even China, Ruth and Stan committed to visiting each of the kids every year, delighting in touring new sights and experiencing new cultures.

Ruth leaves behind her four children, David (Carla) of Raymore, Mo, Bradley (Lori) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Andrew (Lori) of Kay, Tx, Cynthia (Mauricio) of Sammamish, WA, eight grandchildren, one great-grandson, her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Larry Darrow of Salina, sister-in-law Delores Kohr (nee Barefield) of Salina and many loving nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be Monday, February 7, 2022 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.. at Wilson Funeral Home, 405 Argyle, Minneapolis.&nbsp; Funeral service for Ruth will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Internment will immediately follow at Hall Cemetery, Delphos, KS.

Sara Lou Burwell, 83, of Abilene, Kansas, passed away on Monday, January 31, in Abilene.

Sara was born in Newton, Kansas on May 29, 1938, a daughter of the late Wayne and Gertrude (Austin) Brainerd.

Sara grew up in Whitewater, Kansas, graduating from Whitewater High School in 1956.

On November 10, 1960, Sara married Willis Lott in Whitewater, Kansas. They shared 22 years of marriage and raised three children in Minneapolis, Kansas.

Sara retired from Bennington State Bank in Bennington, Kansas in 2004.

On June 7, 2002, Sara married Bill Burwell in Abilene, Kansas.
