Darrell James Podlena, 71, passed away Saturday, October 23, 2021, in Ellsworth, KS. He was born November 3, 1949, in Ellsworth to James and Doloris (Voeltz) Podlena.

Darrell graduated from Kanopolis High School in 1967, then attended Salina Vo-Tech. He started working at Independent Salt Mine in 1968. Darrell held several positions throughout the 48 years he worked at the mine before retiring in 2016 as purchasing manager. He knew a lot about the equipment and workings of the mine above and underground which made him very knowledgeable as the purchasing manager. Darrell&nbsp;was also one of the original members on the Independent Salt Mine Rescue Team and was a mine safety committee member.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He enjoyed coyote and coon hunting, gardening and raising poultry and pigeons, bowling and traveling to all of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities.&nbsp;

Darrell is survived by his son David Podlena (Traci) of Topeka, KS; daughter Ramona Blakley of Granbury, TX; son Daniel Podlena (Carrie) of Silver Lake, KS; daughter Crystal Podlena of Holyrood; grandchildren Donald, Jacque, Shayla, Dawson, Dray, Kensley, and Kylie; great-grandchildren Hazel and William; and brothers Roger Podlena (Gwenna) of Kanopolis, KS and Robert Podlena of Lake Tapawingo, MO. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Michael Podlena.

Visitation: 1-8 p.m., Wednesday, October 27, 2021, with family present 6-8 p.m., at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Graveside funeral service: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 28, 2021, at Kanopolis Cemetery.

Anna Mae “Binkie” Miller was born January 17, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA. She was the daughter of George M. and Anna May (Beck) Gastiger. She was a longtime Abilene and Solomon area resident. 

She passed away Monday, October 25, 2021 at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina at the age of 80. On February 14, 1959, Binkie was united in marriage to James “Jim” Mack Miller.

Anna Mae was a homemaker and a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Abilene. She enjoyed embroidering and volunteered at the Abilene Food Bank. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her greatest love was her faithful companion Grassy (her dog). What made her the most proud was seeing her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow up. Spending every minute with them made her life worthwhile. She treasured her friends and her church family. She enjoyed sitting on the front porch reading and embroidering. She loved her country life. Her door was always open to friends and family. Anna Mae is survived by her children Kathy Anne (Michael) McCulley of Mesa, Arizona, Tammy Anne Billinger of Hays, Glenn Michael (Tanna) Miller of Lyons, Mary Anne Miller resides overseas, eleven grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Jim on August 12, 1997, her son James “Jason” Miller in 1992, and her parents. A celebration of life service for Binkie will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 1, 2021at the First Southern Baptist Church in Abilene with Pastor Kirby Benisch officiating.

She was born December 12,1940 in Miltonvale, Kansas to John and Maxine Matson. She married her love, Don Leon Knight, on August 31, 1966. They were married for 55 blissful years.

Sharon lived a full life as a wonderful mother, homemaker and worked in the school systems as everyone's favorite cafeteria worker. She and her husband loved to travel and visited 49 out of 50 states! She loved to buy and wear beautiful jewelry, a fun pastime she shared with her daughter-in-love. A farm girl at heart, gardening was also a passion.&nbsp; Her award-winning iris garden was her pride and joy.

Sharon will be remembered for loving her family deeply. She instilled in her son strong values that have served him well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Sharon is survived by her husband Don, her son Jeremy Michael and his wife Lucinda, her only grandchild, Chloe Elise, and her brother Jerry Matson. &nbsp;

Les married Elaine Thompson on June 10, 1978, in Jewell, KS. They were united in marriage for 43 years. He was currently employed at MHC Kenworth in Salina.

He is survived by his wife Elaine of the home; children Eugene Spellman (Hoa) of Haysville, KS, and Megan Kraus (Jeremy) of Topeka; grandchildren Angela, Tristan, and Brigham; brother Lyle Spellman (Kathy) of Wichita; and mother Dorothy Spellman, of Salina.

He is preceded in death by his father Alvin Spellman.

Raymond J. “Pete”&nbsp;Princ, 95, entered&nbsp;into rest on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at his residence in Lebanon, Kansas. He was born on June 12, 1926 to John and Anna (Svaty) Princ.&nbsp;

He was a 1944 graduate of Lucas High School. He was a star athlete who participated in all sports. He was an avid sports fan. He loved fishing any day, any weather. He loved seeing his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play in all sporting events.&nbsp;

Raymond served in United States Army during World War II. He was in combat fighting In the 1st Batt., 63rd Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division, Luzon, PI., against the Japanese army there. After their surrender, he took part in the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea. He was decorated and promoted soldier achieving the rank of Tech/Sgt. and honorably discharged from duty.

Raymond was united in marriage on Sept. 4, 1949, to Ramona “Maxine” Worford at Russell, Kansas. Maxine preceded him in death November 7, 2001.

In 1958 “Pete” and “Maxine” purchased the Lebanon Recreation and moved their family to Lebanon, Kansas. They also purchased farm land. Pete enjoyed farming and raising, hogs and crops&nbsp; He was especially proud of his Longhorn cattle herd he once raised.&nbsp;

Raymond was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato, a lifetime member of the VFW and the DAV. Raymond served as the past commander of the American Legion in Lebanon. He was a 50-year member of the Eagle’s Club.

He is survived by two daughters, Lora Lehrling, Mankato, KS; Carla Boyles, Lebanon, KS; two sons, Mark Princ, (Cindy) Maize, KS;&nbsp; and David, Oklahoma City, OK; sister Marilyn Johnson, Ft. Worth, TX; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents John and Anna, wife Maxine, son-in-law Rick Lehrling, sister Marge and her husband Harold Frederking,&nbsp;brother Edwin Princ and his wife Laura, and brother-in-law Lester Johnson.&nbsp;

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later time. &nbsp;Raymond will be interred at the Sweet Home Cemetery, Lebanon, with military honors.

Pete enjoyed farming and raising, hogs and crops&nbsp; He was especially proud of his Longhorn cattle herd he once raised.&nbsp;Raymond was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato, a lifetime member of the VFW and the DAV. Raymond served as the past commander of the American Legion in Lebanon. He was a 50-year member of the Eagle’s Club.He is survived by two daughters, Lora Lehrling, Mankato, KS; Carla Boyles, Lebanon, KS; two sons, Mark Princ, (Cindy) Maize, KS;&nbsp; and David, Oklahoma City, OK; sister Marilyn Johnson, Ft. D. Wayne Chartier, 90, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 7:35 a.m., Sunday, October 24, 2021 at Cedars House, McPherson, Kansas. Wayne was born in Concordia, Kansas on September 24, 1931, a son of Lenora Maxine (Layton) and Louie A. Chartier. Wayne attended the Districts 19 and 11 country schools, Lincoln Grade School, and graduated in 1949 from Concordia High School, all of Concordia, Kansas. Wayne was united in marriage to Carolee Anne Russell on June 12, 1952 at the Canton Methodist Church, Canton, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Herington, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of three sons, David, Greg, and Kevin. During the Korean War, Carolee moved back to Hope, Kansas until Wayne's honorable discharge when the family moved to Salina, Kansas. On December 4, 1954 they moved to McPherson and have lived here since that time. He was a member of First United Methodist Church McPherson, where Wayne was a member of the United Methodist Men, was head usher, and served his church in many capacities through the years. Wayne honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Through the years, Wayne worked as a carpenter for Burk Construction, worked for the McPherson Sentinel as a compositor and was a production supervisor for Johns Manville, all of McPherson. Wayne was a member of the American Legion Post 24, McPherson, Kansas, was a Cub Scout leader for Pack 117 and Boy Scout leader for Troop 117, McPherson Opera House Company where he served as a showtime volunteer. He coached little league baseball for many years. Wayne enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family. Brenda graduated from Concordia High School in 1968.&nbsp; 

She married George Mikesell and to this union were born Robert, William and Mary.&nbsp; 

Brenda worked in the office for Boogaarts and later Scrivner until those offices closed.&nbsp; 

She returned to school and graduated from K-State Salina with an associates degree in business in 1999.&nbsp; She worked in the office for Gerard Tank &amp; Steel until her retirement but continued to help her son Robert in the office at Budreau Muffler.

Brenda served as Girl Scout leader for over 13 years where she taught outdoor living skills, camping and a host of other duties.&nbsp; She loved to take the family camping at the lake and fishing with their grandfather.&nbsp; She always enjoyed all their time spent together.

Brenda was currently serving as the president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary; past treasurer for ABATE Dist. 9; life member of the Vietnam Veterans Auxiliary; the American Legion Riders, the Eagle Riders in Junction City and participated in the Cloud County Toy Run for the past several years.&nbsp; Brenda was an avid quilter and sewer.&nbsp; She made over 100 quilts for different patriotic groups, friends, family and anyone who may need one.&nbsp; She also used her skills to embroider for several motorcycle groups.

Brenda later married Ron D. Davis on March 5, 2005, at the American Legion in Salina, KS on the singles night dance evening, since that is where they met!

She is survived by her husband Ron, Concordia; sons Robert (Kathy) Mikesell, Jamestown and William (Katie), Aurora; daughter Mary (John) Tippie, Nevada, MO; stepdaughters Ronda Davis, KC, MO and Leslie (Brian) McIntire, Smiths Station, AL; brother Dave (Nancy) Stortz, Smith Center; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Richard Stortz.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia with Rev. Randy Whitley and Pastor Earl Hale officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6-7 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2021, all at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Marilyn was previously married to Donald W. Kennedy, and her first husband Richard Paul Tucker. She was a housewife and mother who loved bingo and lipstick.

Marilyn is survived by her children Betty Fowler, Mary Frances Ludden, Theresa Kibbler, Paula Tucker Dawkins, and son Richard Wayne Tucker; 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

She will be loved and missed. Heaven has gained another angel.

Roseanne R. McCann, 69, of Overbrook, Kansas died Friday, October 22, 2021 at her residence.&nbsp; She was born May 21, 1952 at Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of Arvid Lee and Rosella (Anderson) Bergstrom.

Roseanne grew up in the Brantford Community and attended the Kackley School before her family moved to Clay Center.&nbsp; She was a member of the CCCHS class of 1970.&nbsp; 

She married Loren D. “Bob” McCann, Jr. on March 4, 1970.&nbsp; 

Roseanne worked as a waitress at the Sunflower Café and worked at Key’s Egg Plant.&nbsp; She graduated from Crum’s Beauty School in 1983 and worked at The Primp Shop in Clay Center.&nbsp; Roseanne owned and operated Hair Unlimited until retiring in 1997.&nbsp; She was a member of the Wesleyan Church. &nbsp;

She is preceded in death by parents, sister Debra Bergstrom and grandson Colby Barber.

Betty Ann Coburn, 86, of Mentor, passed away Thursday, October 21, 2021. She was born June 27, 1935 in Salina, to August and Luise (Sterling) Laas. 

She attended Bavaria High School and Marymount College, where she received her bachelor’s degree. 

She was&nbsp; married to Harold Jensen from 1955 to 1967, until he passed away. She married William "Bud" Coburn on November 13, 1976 until his death in 2014. 

Betty worked as a social worker for many years for the state of Kansas. She loved her work with children. She did adoptions, foster care, and abuse cases. In her spare time, she enjoyed oil painting, quilting and growing flowers.

Survivors include her children Michael Jensen, Teresa Swisher (John) and Danette Toone; one sister, Ethel Diehl; grandchildren Brooke Swisher, Uriah Swisher, Madison Sanderford, Morgan Toone, Joshua Jensen, Jessie Jensen, Jaley Jensen, and Justin Jensen; and great-grandchildren, Raegan Kee, Ethan Sanderford, Dylan Sanderford, Rustin Swisher, Brody Swisher, and Quinley Swisher; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and siblings Walter Laas, Otto Laas, Dorothy Richards, Elmer Laas and Rudolph Laas.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, October 25, 2021 at Ryan Mortuary, with family present from 6-8 p.m.

Goessel - Barbara Kay Allen, 70, passed away October 16, 2021 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. 

Barbara Allen was born Barbara Kay Voth on May 16, 1951 to Earnest and Helen Voth in Goessel, Kansas. Barbara, who became better known as Barb, was the youngest of three children. Her brother Larry was closest in age to her at 7 years to the day and her sister Darlene was 7 years older than Larry so she was the baby of the family. She grew up on a farm north of Goessel on the K-15 highway near the sand pits and Rec-O- Rama. She told tales of chores on the farm, hiding out from her parents in the fields and other stories.

In 1969 she married the father to her children, Floyd Webster, and they moved into a house on Park Street in Canton, Kansas. Son Matthew was born August 7, 1970 followed by son Shawn (aka Miles) less than two years later on May 8, 1972. The family moved from Canton to Chase for a job opportunity Floyd had and lived there until their separation and eventual divorce.

After divorcing from Floyd, Barb and her two boys moved to a small house in Goessel on the corner of Alamo and Prospect until she could get back on her feet before eventually moving to McPherson where they lived in a duplex on Bear Street. McPherson became her home for 40 years or better where she worked as a waitress and housecleaner. She worked as a waitress at several McPherson area restaurants including one attached to the Starlight Lanes, Chuckwagon Jr. and Red Coach. She also cleaned houses and area businesses such as the abstract office during that time to make ends meet.

While living in McPherson on Bear Street she met and married her second husband, Richard (Dick) Allen. Not long after, they moved to a trailer park on the west side of McPherson for a few years before eventually moving to Mustang Trailer Park on the east side of town and closer to the restaurant she was working for at that time, Red Coach. She continued to live in Mustang Trailer Park, working at Red Coach until her separation and eventual divorce from Dick many years later. She then moved into a house on Elm Street for a time before moving back to Mustang Trailer Park once more where she stayed until the passing of her mother in 2011.

After the passing of her mother, she moved back into her old family home and worked as a waitress at Charlie's restaurant in Newton while continuing to supplement her income with housecleaning, until deciding to retire a few years later.

After retirement Barb spent her time doing one of her favorite pastimes, gardening, where she surrounded her home with many of the fruits of her labor. Even in her declining health she would still go out and try to manage her flowers using a walker to get around.

Throughout life Barb enjoyed doing many things with her free time including painting, thrift store and garage sale shopping, dancing, writing and spending time with her family and friends.

Barb was preceded in death by her mother and father, Ernest and Helen Voth, her sister Darlene Stucky and her nephew Johnathan Voth. 

She is survived by her two children, Matthew Webster who lives with his wife Amanda in Forte Mohave, Arizona with three of their combined eight children and Shawn Webster who resides in Newton, Kansas with his wife Christie.

At her passing on October 16, 2021 at the age of 70, Barb had two children, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Ronald K. Anderson, 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at his home in McPherson. 

Ronald Keith Anderson was born on January 8, 1936, in McPherson, KS, the son of Leonard R. Anderson and Fern A. (Spencer) Anderson. Fern passed when Ron was ten years old. Leonard remarried Lena Marie Miller. Marie loved him like her own. 

He farmed in the summer for his uncle, Melvin Spencer, after his mother passed away. Farming made him strong with a strong grip that was part of his success later as a discus thrower. He loved farming. Ron served with the Army National Guard, Company A, 137th Infantry from 1954 through 1962 when he was honorably discharged. He was a teacher, coach, and counselor in the Lawrence, Kansas area from 1957 through 1975. He moved back to McPherson when his father-in-law asked him to come help set up an oil company for him. He taught two years at Central Christian School in Hutchinson in the midst of helping start up many businesses, including Cap Oil, The Christian Counseling Center, and Economy Hearing Aid Center. Ron graduated with the McPherson High Class of 1954. Until he was a freshman in high school, he had never thrown a discus. During those four years, he broke the school record nine times. He placed first in the league meets, first in regional meets, and first at KU Relay. He didn’t look like a discus thrower—he was 6 ft. 1 inch tall and entered high school at 140 pounds and weighed 157 pounds when he graduated. During high school, he also lettered in basketball and football. On September 20, 1956, Ron was united in marriage to Patricia Helen Casebeer in Enid, OK. He graduated with the McPherson College Class of 1958. Ron lettered in track and basketball. He was a three-time All American, four-time Discus NAIA Qualifier, KCAC record holder, and two-year conference champion. In 1957, he won the NAIA Discus National Championship. He was also an Olympic trial qualifier in the discus. In 2000, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He threw in Masters and Senior Olympics meets from 1992 to 2016. His last competition was when he was 80 years old. He competed in 205 meets, earned 175 gold metals, and held 80 meet records during that time. Their son, Rick, followed in his dad’s footsteps and took up throwing the discus and shot put also. He enjoyed many trips with Rick and his wife, Alice, when Rick became eligible to compete in the Masters and Senior Olympic meets. It gave Ron great joy when his son started beating his records! He loved God, his wife Pat of 65 years, his family, and teaching others about our Lord and Savior. He had a special love for teaching prophecy. He loved to take his children and grandchildren fishing when he was younger. He enjoyed watching his son and grandchildren play sports. He had a silly sense of humor. He was called Papa and was greatly loved by all. In Ron’s last days, he was ministered to by Serenity Hospice Care. They loved him, and he loved them. They made his last days as pleasant as possible under the circumstances. He also had family members, you know who you are, who helped when hospice couldn’t be there. Ron went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, surrounded by family at his home in McPherson. He was eighty-five. He is survived by his wife Pat; his son Rick and wife Alice of Lawrence, KS; his daughters Terry Kanitz of McPherson, KS and Kim Schafer and husband Tim of McPherson, KS; four grandchildren, Dustan Kanitz and wife Brooke of McPherson, KS, Jessica Koehn and husband Shawn of Moundridge, KS, George Schafer of McPherson, KS, and Jamie Schafer of McPherson, KS; 11 great-grandchildren, Riley Koehn, Madison Koehn, Lincoln Koehn, Kemper Koehn, Steele Koehn, Crew Koehn, Henley Koehn, Kreighton Kanitz, Kaizer Kanitz, Kash Kanitz, and Kager Kanitz; his sisters Phyllis Keeslar and husband Elden, of Florida, Jackie Eberle of Illinois, Kathy Unruh and husband Doug of McPherson, KS, Vicki Vollmer and husband Doug of Kanopolis; and many nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be held at 10:0 a.m. Thursday, October 28, 2021, at Stockham Family Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Hoover officiating. Anderson, 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at his home in McPherson. Ronald Keith Anderson was born on January 8, 1936, in McPherson, KS, the son of Leonard R. Anderson and Fern A. (Spencer) Anderson. Fern passed when Ron was ten years old. Leonard remarried Lena Marie Miller. Marie loved him like her own. He farmed in the summer for his uncle, Melvin Spencer, after his mother passed away. Farming made him strong with a strong grip that was part of his success later as a discus thrower. He loved farming. Ron served with the Army National Guard, Company A, 137th Infantry from 1954 through 1962 when he was honorably discharged. He was a teacher, coach, and counselor in the Lawrence, Kansas area from 1957 through 1975. He moved back to McPherson when his father-in-law asked him to come help set up an oil company for him. He taught two years at Central Christian School in Hutchinson in the midst of helping start up many businesses, including Cap Oil, The Christian Counseling Center, and Economy Hearing Aid Center. Ron graduated with the McPherson High Class of 1954. Until he was a freshman in high school, he had never thrown a discus. During those four years, he broke the school record nine times. He placed first in the league meets, first in regional meets, and first at KU Relay. He didn’t look like a discus thrower—he was 6 ft. 1 inch tall and entered high school at 140 pounds and weighed 157 pounds when he graduated. Lothar loved to hunt, load black powder ammunition and collect guns. He was a life member of the NRA.
