Thelma Edna Hicks, age 92, of Abilene, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at the Village Manor Nursing Home. She was born March 8, 1929 in Montcalm, West Virginia, the daughter of Beverly and Virgie (Johnson) Sheets. She attended the local schools and was united in marriage to Richard Hicks on April 5, 1945 in Folkston, Georgia. Edna worked for the Alco Warehouse for several years before retiring. She enjoyed going to garage sales, and the Dollar Store, but loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter Cindy Jones and her husband Roy of Hutchinson, five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Richard on February 27, 1979 and her sons Gary Hicks and Robert Hicks. Private family services are planned. Her final resting place will be in the Abilene Cemetery.

Michael was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps where he served as a machine gunner in the 11th Marine Regiment. 

Michael and Tammy married in 1988 and were happily married for 33 years. 

He worked at Textron (formerly known as Beechcraft/Raytheon) for almost 30 years. He enjoyed spending with family and close friends and watching KU with a Budweiser in his hand.

Michael is survived by his wife Tammy Cedillo; his children Dani Cedillo-Brister (Adam) of Los Alamos, NM and Taylor Cedillo of Salina; his grandchildren Frankie, Flint, and Georgie; his sisters Pat Fernandez (Art) and Grace Cochran (Kenny) of Salina; brother Vic Cedillo (Nancy) of Cypress, TX; father-in-law Max Marler (Phyllis); sisters-in-law Pam Skidmore (Mike) and Julie Marler; and multiple nieces and nephews.

Collin John Francis&nbsp;was born on September 6, 1948, at St. John's Hospital in Salina, Kansas. He passed away, surrounded by family, on February 14, 2022, from complications of pneumonia. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Vike and Yvonne Francis; two brothers, Trey and Sean Francis; and his lovely wife of 43 years, Libby Vering Francis. 

He is survived by three daughters, Shannon Simoneau, Erin Francis, and Colleen Francis, and three wonderful granddaughters, Lauren Simoneau, Emma Simoneau, and Libby Francis-Marshal, all of Kansas City, MO. He loved each of them very much. His storytelling and humor will be missed greatly.

Ever an entrepreneur and hard worker, Collin opened and managed several businesses throughout his life. He spent his younger days managing several fast-food restaurants. He and his wife, Libby, started many business ventures including restaurants, a free newspaper, and an antique and furniture refinishing shop. They worked in the shop together for 20 years. With his brother and dear friends, he was able to enjoy his love of the car business, using his salesmanship, charisma, and humor with his customers. In 2004, Collin and Libby retired happily together.

He truly loved music and the nostalgia it evoked. With an endless supply of music and stories, he shared fond memories with all that would listen. He enjoyed making tapes for friends and collected over 50,000 records which he later sold, one by one, on eBay along with post cards, stamps, military medals, and other items collected over the years from auctions and flea markets. In 2011, a year after his beloved wife passed away, he moved to Branson, MO, where he attended hundreds of live shows over nine years.

Collin loved to write poetry and did so almost daily since watching the 1968 Elvis: The Comeback Special. He was also teaching himself to play the guitar and harmonica. He will miss college football games (especially Kansas State University football) and the TV show Survivor.

He will miss his friends and family but looks forward to being reunited with the love of his life, his dear wife Libby. Their favorite quote was "Love is a friendship that has caught on fire." Theirs sure did!

The funeral services for Collin Francis scheduled for Sat. Feb 19 have been postponed due to COVID-19. A future date will be announced.

Dee grew up in a military family and moved around a lot. She lived in Texas, Florida and Kansas where she retired.

She enjoyed spending time on the farm helping her grandparents out with milking the cows and preparing dinner. She married the love of her life, Danny Corbett, February 13, 1990. She worked at Chapman Valley Manor until her retirement. She has five grandchildren whom she loved spending time with. She enjoyed teaching them how to cook.

 In her free time she liked to sew, play hidden object games, decorate for the holidays and watch NCIS. 

Dee is preceeded in death by husband Dan Corbett and her parents Willard and Iris Marshall. 

She is survived by her sons Jason and Josh Marshall and her five grandchildren. 

A graveside service will be held on Feb. 18. 2022 at the Indian Hill Cemetery at 11 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He enjoyed fishing, camping, casinos, boating, mowing his lawn, following the Kansas City Chiefs, and having breakfast at various restaurants. On November 11, 1960 he was united in marriage to Ellen Dawson in Abilene.

He is survived by his daughter Vicky Lyne of Ventura, California, his son Kevin Houlton of Oxnard, California, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. 

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Ellen, two brothers, John and Thomas, and one sister, Elizabeth. Services for Gilbert will be Monday, February 28, 2022 at the Danner Funeral Home with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. His final resting place will be in the Abilene Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm – 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.

SALINA - Janie May Lamer, 67, passed away on February 12, 2022. She was born Janie May Arrington on April 19, 1954, in Salina, KS. She was a lifelong resident of Salina and graduated from Salina Central High School in 1972. She earned an associate degree from Cloud County Community College. 

She was united in marriage to Lowell Lamer on January 17, 1976. They recently celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary.

Janie had a love of reading and shared her love of books with many during her years she worked as a librarian at the Salina Public Library. She retired after more than 40 years of service in the children’s department. She could find any book anyone was looking for and also had a vast knowledge of the history of the library.

Janie also was an avid gardener who loved spending time in her flower gardens. She loved gardening with her family when her children were young, and after her children were grown, she and her husband shared their love of gardening together. Most of all she loved her children and grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Salina. Janie was a member of the Friends of the Salina Public Library and also of Mothers of Multiples.

Janie was preceded in death by her mothe, Mary Arrington. 

She is survived by her husband Lowell, and by her twin daughters Kimberly Bartel (Lance) and Stephanie Holston (Ben) both of Wichita, KS. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Candace and Bryson Britting, and Abby, Carson, Ethan, Ellie, and Charlotte Bartel, all of Wichita.

Janie will be deeply missed by her family and those who knew her. 

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday February 16, 2022, at Ryan Mortuary. Funeral services will be held Thursday February 17, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Ryan Mortuary.

SALINA – James Homer Barnett, Jr., of Salina, Kansas, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Saturday, February 12, at the age of 84.&nbsp; He was born in Logansport, Louisiana, on March 26, 1937, the 11th child of James, Sr. and Lessie (Baker) Barnett.

James was a gifted athlete in football and track at Logansport High School and attended Southwest Louisiana State University on a football scholarship in Lafayette, LA.

James served as an air policeman with the 802nd Air Division in the U.S. Air Force at Schilling Air Force Base in Salina from 1957 to 1961, with nine of those months served in Greenland.&nbsp; He served in the Air Force Reserve from 1961 to 1963.&nbsp;

James married the love of his life, Judith A. Chitty, in 1961.&nbsp; Together they raised three children, with their family eventually growing to include 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Sadly, after 53 years of marriage, Judith passed away in 2014.

James worked at Salina Concrete building silos, Roosevelt Lincoln School and Southeast of Saline Junior High as custodian, Graves Truck Lines, and he retired from Western Auto after 17 years as a truck driver.&nbsp; In retirement he also worked at Mowery Clinic, Benson Construction, and McCall Manor.&nbsp;

Some of Jim’s favorite things to do included fishing, playing and umpiring sports, refereeing football games, card games with family, and playing guitar.&nbsp; Jim loved being involved with the youth in Gypsum who grew up with his kids.

Jim was always available to help with woodcutting, moving, painting, mowing, or whatever job was needed for church, family, and friends.

Jim was a firm believer in Jesus Christ and the importance of salvation through faith in Christ alone.&nbsp; Some of his greatest memories were of serving at church by singing, helping with upkeep of the buildings, and mentoring youth.

James was a member of Gypsum Baptist Church until his move to Salina when he became a member of Ray Avenue Baptist Church.&nbsp;

Preceded in death by his parents; his wife Judith; his father and mother-in-law William and Hazel Chitty; his sisters Lessie, Linnie, Winnie, Ovell, Maxine, Lola Bee, Doris Lee, and his brother (only known as baby son).&nbsp;

James is survived by his sons Todd and Ty Barnett of Salina; his daughter Terri (Allen) Burns of Washington; two sisters, Olean Broadus and Ruth Bailey of Texas, many nieces and nephews, and his special friend, Sandra Armstrong of Lindsborg.

Viewing will be at Ryan Mortuary at 137 N. 8th Street in Salina on Friday, February 18, from 4-7 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 19, at Ray Avenue Baptist Church, 2801 Ray Avenue, Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial will be at Poheta Cemetery at 9801 E. Magnolia Road in Kipp, Kansas.

Catherine L. (Kay) Brann, 84, of Salina, passed away peacefully at her home February 11, 2022. She was born March 6, 1937, in Osawatamie, KS to Azalee Richards.

Kay and Richard were united in marriage Sept. 12, 1984.

She was a waitress at Betty’s Fried Chicken. Richard and Kay owned Kay’s Kitchen, and she worked at Dillons until her retirement 20 years ago.

She looked forward to family gatherings. Family was very important to her.

Kay was preceded in death by daughter Cynthia Bergman, nephew Jeffery Hemmy, mother Azalee Richards, sister Mary Lou Hemmy and husband Richard Brann.

Survivors include daughters Debbie Salada, Brenda Allison (Trace), Jodi (Dave) Ritten all of Salina, Cynthia (Terry) Latham of Hutchison, sons Jerry Bergman (Jan), of Salina, Lonnie Bergman (Lil), of Assaria, nephew Troy (Sarah) Hemmy of Overland Park, 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Per Kay’s request cremation was chosen. There will be no memorial service.

Richard and Kay owned Kay’s Kitchen, and she worked at Dillons until her retirement 20 years ago.She looked forward to family gatherings. Family was very important to her.Kay was preceded in death by daughter Cynthia Bergman, nephew Jeffery Hemmy, mother Azalee Richards, sister Mary Lou Hemmy and husband Richard Brann.Survivors include daughters Debbie Salada, Brenda Allison (Trace), Jodi (Dave) Ritten all of Salina, Cynthia (Terry) Latham of Hutchison, sons Jerry Bergman (Jan), of Salina, Lonnie Bergman (Lil), of Assaria, nephew Troy (Sarah) Hemmy of Overland Park, 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.&nbsp;Per Kay’s request cremation was chosen. Martin Robidou, 94 of Salina, passed away Friday, February 11, 2022.&nbsp; He was born April 8, 1927, in St. Louis, Missouri.

He worked for IGA for 20 years, Weeks Grocery Store for 12 years, and Waddell &amp; Reed Insurance and Investors for 18 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jacqueline, and parents Martin D. and Katherine (Goertz) Robidou.

Survivors include children Michael (Patricia) Robidou of Wichita, Cynthia A. (James) McGaughey of Collins, MO., M. Kay (Eric) Kindlesparger of Salina, and Robert K (Anita) Robidou of Trophy Club, TX., sister Mary Kay Bourne of Canyon City, CO, 10 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be on Friday, February 18, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 122 N Eighth Street, Salina.

Burial will be held in Hutchinson at the Fairlawn Burial Park following the funeral service.

Carolyn M. Horting, 81, Bennington, died Tuesday, February 15, 2022. She was born July 23, 1940, to William Russell and Dolores M. (Gawith) Nisbeth on her grandparents' farm west of Bennington.

She went to country school when she was in the first grade and then onto Bennington Public Schools where she graduated from high school. Carolyn then attended Brown Mackie Business College in Salina.

She and Larry L. Horting were married in Tescott on June 27, 1959. To this union two children were born, Carol Sue and William Lee. Carolyn worked for the Bank of Tescott for 45 years, retiring February 2006. She then helped Larry on the farm working hay and raising cattle.

Carolyn loved riding horses in the Eastern Kansas Horse Association. Her favorite pastime was bowling and doing word searches. Her favorite song was “I Was Raised on Country Sunshine.” After retirement, she and Larry traveled extensively, and many memories were made.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Bill; and sister Sharlyn Geiger.

Survivors are her husband Larry; daughter Carol Horting; son William Horting and his sons, Michael (Crystal), Cody, and Devon (Felicia) and their son, Forrest; brother-in-law Charles Geiger; two sisters-in-law, Susan Horting and Peggy Nisbeth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 18 at the Tescott United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with burial on Larry and Carolyn’s farm.

George Edward Bezemek, 94, of Ellsworth, died February 13, 2022. He was born July 23, 1927, on his grandfather’s family farm homestead in Ellsworth County, KS, to Joseph and Agnes (Benes) Bezemek. He graduated eighth grade from Oxide Country School number 40, and Lorraine High School in 1945.

George was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving in the Sixth Tank Battalion, Second Armored Division, in the American Theatre when the war ended. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to the family farm. He was a life member of the Ellsworth American Legion Post 174.

George retired after 40 years as a mechanic in Ellsworth County. He was a 65-year member of the Ellsworth Masonic Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Red Cross of Constantine. He enjoyed mechanics, metalworking, hunting, and building and owning racing cars.

George was preceded in death by his parents; brother James Bezemek; and two sisters, Anna J. Bezemek and Blanche Hammond. 

Survivors include his brother Ludwig Bezemek (Martha) of El Paso, TX; three sisters, Mary Clark of Salina, Ella Erskine of Raleigh, NC, and Rosalind Jarrett of Eagan, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Following a private burial, a memorial service will be held on Friday, April 22, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Orlo William Brokaw, born May 10, 1934, in rural Mitchell County, Kansas, to Orren and Blanche (German) Brokaw, passed away February 13, 2022.

The eldest of five siblings, he grew up a child of the Depression era in a Christian home, learning the lessons of hard work, respect and determination. Beginning in early childhood, he demonstrated instances of necessity being the mother of invention, in his youth he built a toy combine using free scraps of wood, with moving header using rubber bands; he built a radio from used tv and radio parts; and he built a grinder in his adult life. There were also an infinite number of lawn mowers brought back into use, which had been deemed “beyond repair” by others.&nbsp;

He graduated from Glen Elder High School in 1952, and enlisted in the United States Air Force in March 1955. During his time of service, upon completion of boot camp, he was stationed at Nova Scotia, Canada, and assigned to work on the radios in the air traffic control tower. When this assignment was completed, he returned to Schilling Air Force Base, Salina, Kansas, until his discharge in March 1959. True to character of taking care of his family, while in the Air Force he sent money home, designating it for such things as material for new Easter dresses for his sisters or school shoes for his brothers. His first civilian employment was with Cunningham Telephone Association, Glen Elder, Kansas, as a telephone lineman. &nbsp;

In 1969, the family moved to Kensington, Kansas, where Orlo began a nearly 30 year career as a telephone lineman with Rural Telephone, Inc. of Lenora, Kansas. &nbsp;He retired from Rural Telephone, Inc., April 30, 1996. Ruby passed away May 9, 1996.&nbsp;During their residency in Kensington, Orlo built a home using his own skills, only hiring contractors as necessary. The entire family was involved in the process from tearing down three houses for lumber, digging footing foundation for the basement, pouring the concrete floor in the basement (during a blizzard), and doing his own electrical wiring. It truly was a home built with blood, sweat, and tears. Through these life models, Orlo provided for his family and passed his lessons of hard work and the value of a dollar to his children and grandchildren. &nbsp;Throughout his adult life he actively participated in coonhunting, raising two world champion coon dogs; and fishing in Kirwin Lake, Waconda Lake, Lovewell Lake, as well as trips to Colorado and Missouri for trout fishing. He also enjoyed spending time at the family farm working on various projects and admiring the wildlife which enjoyed the safe haven he had created.&nbsp;He married Barbara Clintsman Thompson April 14, 2007. Since 2015, after selling the home in Kensington, they have resided in Glen Elder, Kansas.&nbsp;Survivors include Barbara of the home; daughters Denise Boone, Hoisington, KS; Darlene (Steve) Beaumont, Great Bend, KS; grandchildren Spencer (Ashley) Boone, Rose Hill, KS; MacKenzie (Avory) Stegman, Overland Park, KS; Trey (Alexis) Herman, Shawnee, KS; Taylor Herman, Lenexa,KS; stepgranddaughter Sheridan Beaumont, Hays, KS; great-grandchildren Milo and Coen Boone and Shaena Herman; stepchildren Larry (Alice) Thompson, Glen Elder, KS; Cheri (Gordon) Doherty, Garden Plain, KS; Carol (Mark) Moran, Hesston, KS; 12 stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; brother Dale (Joyce) Brokaw, Silver Lake, KS, and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruby; sister Della Dykens; sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Calvin Thull; brother and sister-in-law Arden and Jessie Brokaw; &nbsp;and nephew David Brokaw.Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 18 at the Glen Elder Friends Church followed by burial in Ionia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. with family present from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home.
