Mary Margaret Tharp, 79, of Herington was born October 3, 1942, in Trenton, MO to Lloyd Vanderpool and Mary (Mantlo) Vanderpool. Mary passed away on August 2, 2022, at the Herington Municipal Hospital with her daughter by her side.
Mary attended local schools in Trenton, which is where she met the love of her life, Virgil Tharp. On March 3, 1959, Mary and Virgil married in Gallatin, MO.
Mary then moved to Herington, following Virgil’s railroad job. Mary worked several places around Herington through the years from the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Herington. Her most favorite job was the years she spent as secretary for Herington High School. She and Virgil owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Herington for 24 years.
She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, First Baptist Church in Herington, attending Shriners Conventions with Virgil, and catering weddings in her spare time. In her later years Mary loved going on trips to the casino. Mary and Virgil loved dancing and are without a doubt dancing away with each other.
Mary is survived by her daughter Kay Childress and husband Gary of Herington, brother William Vanderpool and wife Betty of Iowa, two grandsons, four great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Mary, her loving husband of 53 years, Virgil, brothers George, James, and Bob.
