Lois M. Kepple, 95, Tescott, died Thursday, June 16, 2022, at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis. Lois was born April 9, 1927, in Salina to Elmer and Elsie (Fischer) Nelson.

Lois and George W. Kepple were united in marriage on October 20, 1946. 

She worked many jobs in her lifetime, but she will be most remembered for her years of driving the school bus for Tescott and Minneapolis. She was a member of the Tescott United Methodist Church and she was an avid quilter.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Ottawa County Health Center for their kind, loving, and compassionate care that was given to Lois these past few years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband George; brother Wayne Nelson; and her sister Norma Reed.

Survivors are her daughters Linda Ryan, Janet Pasley and her husband, Ron, and Karen Stelter and her husband, Ron; sister Joyce Graham; seven grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 20 at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday at the Tescott United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Culver Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tescott United Methodist Church or the Ottawa County Health Center and may be left in care of Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O. Johnney “John” Lee Guffey, 81, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022, surrounded by his family at Hillsboro Community Hospital.&nbsp; Over the years, he worked for San Ore, Mistletoe Express, Beaver Express, and Prairieland Partners.

John was born on February 26, 1941, in Fairlane, OK, the son of Vernon M. and Ruby (May) Guffey.&nbsp; He graduated from Codell High School.&nbsp; He served in the United States Army from October 31, 1963 to October 29, 1965.&nbsp;

 On December 29, 1969, John was united in marriage to Kay F. Basgall in Loretta, KS.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children, Jeffrey, Brian, and Betty.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion Post #24.&nbsp;

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Kay, of the home; two children, Brian Guffey of McPherson, KS and Betty Laney (Josh) of Walton, KS; four grandchildren, Kane Guffey, Katelyn Guffey, Nichole Yianakopulos, and Caleb Laney; two great-grandchildren, Landyn Koons and Koda McFadden; a brother, Richard Guffey (Deb) of Hays, KS; sister-in-law Carol Guffey of Brunswick, GA; and many extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Ronald Guffey; sister Janis Johnson; a son, Jeffrey Guffey; a grandson, Trenton Yianakopulos; and daughter-in-law Cindy Guffey.

Dwight Harold Greenough of Abilene, KS passed away on June 13, 2022 at the age of 88.

Dwight was born on July 14, 1933 near Talmage on the family farm to the son of Tom and Eva (Smith) Greenough.

He attended Center Grade School, a one-room school walking to and from with his sisters. At night using a kerosene lamp he learned to read and write as was common in the country. He grew up in the Dirty '30s&nbsp; when times were hard and during WWII using ration stamps. He graduated from Chapman High School in 1951 meeting and marrying his high school sweetheart Sharolyn Burjes.

He owned Greenough Body Shop and Wrecker Service for over 60 years repairing vehicles and operating the towing service along South Buckeye. He could always be spotted driving one of the wreckers.

Dwight especially enjoyed running the wrecker service being called out all hours and in all types of weather. He towed just about every kind of vehicle on the road including cars, tractors, trucks and semis. Recovery work included unloading trailers and up righting them back on to their wheels.&nbsp;He helped save many lives as there were times when the wrecker was used to lift vehicles during a rescue. He also told of stories of helping people with little money by not charging them for towing and repairs.

Dwight was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge, in Abilene. He and Sharolyn delivered Meals on Wheels, and he was a volunteer fireman. He also enjoyed playing golf, boating and camping and going to casinos.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dale and two sisters Maxine Meehan and Kathleen Suetter.

 He is survived by his wife Sharolyn, his three sons Dee (Diane) of Abilene, Jay (Cheryl) of Lenexa, KS, Jon (Valerie) of Platte City, MO. Grand children include Angela, Dustin, Lauren, Morgan, Clint and Chelsea, and thirteen great grandchildren. He is survived by two sisters: Shirley Spidell and Marilyn Emerson as well as several nieces and nephews, friends.

Services for Dwight will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the Mt. Hope Cemetery near Enterprise with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. 

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the Danner Funeral Home.

Gerald Wade "Speedy" Miller of McPherson, KS, passed away Friday, June 10, 2022, in the loving home he and his wife Barbara lived in since 1973.

Gerald was born December 22, 1946, in McPherson, the son of Wade Ward Miller and Lucile Marie (Fairchild) of McPherson Kansas.

Gerald grew up playing marbles, cowboys and Indians, army, hide and go seek, baseball, pheasant hunting in western Kansas, and anything outside. &nbsp;One of his fondest childhood memories was riding the tractor with Granddad Fairchild in the dark fields at night. Other memories include playing till after dark around the home he grew up in at 700 South Chestnut in McPherson.

Gerald went to Roosevelt Grade School, McPherson Intermediate School, and McPherson Senior High. He attended Wichita State University from 1964-1969, earning a degree in elementary education and earning the honor of distinguished military student in ROTC.

On August 6, 1967, he married Barbara Jean Kline at the First United Methodist Church in McPherson. Both Speedy and Barb say they were lucky to have both the boy they wanted when Richard Warren was born in 1969 and daughter Amy RaeAnn in 1972.

Gerald served as a convoy trail officer and convoy commander in Vietnam in 1970-71 where he earned a Bronze Star with V-Device. After completing his tour in Vietnam, he returned to McPherson to work in the family auto shop until he sold the shop in 2008.

Gerald attended and served at First Baptist Church, McPherson where he was a member since 1958. Gerald taught Sunday School classes and actively served the church youth group. Gerald was baptized at age 12. His life embodied the Christian Faith due to his devoted love for Jesus his Lord and Savior.

Gerald was an Eagle Scout and later went on to serve as an adult leader for Troop 133. He even finished a grueling two-week hike in the New Mexico mountains with son Richard. Speedy also found time to help his father-in-law Shorty Kline bring T-ball to McPherson. Gerald coached T-ball as well as umpired for Kansas and Western League baseball.

Gerald was a member of the McPherson Optimist Club and was named Optimist of the Year in 1979. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge where he was Officer of the Year in 1999-2000. He served on several boards including Big Brothers &amp; Big Sisters, McPherson Pheasants Forever, Kansas Tire Dealers Association, and Washington Elementary School PTA President. The Millers, along with Jim and Gayle Snow, operated the McPherson County Teen Center for 10 years.

Speedy fulfilled one dream by winning the Senior Division Golf Championship at the McPherson Country Club in 2009 and yet another by sky diving on different occasions.

Gerald lived life to the fullest as he enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, trips to the east coast, snow skiing, water skiing, country dancing, teaching country dancing, winters in Arizona, trips to Lake of the Ozarks, and golfing with friends and family.

Gerald’s greatest passion was supporting his grandchildren in whatever activities they pursued. For the past 10 years, his passion for watching McPherson baseball became iconic. He was the adopted “grandpa” of the team. Gerald could be heard cheering for every batter and every good play – and on occasion correcting the umpire on an incorrect call. In spite of his declining health, he wouldn’t miss a game – as if his life depended on it.&nbsp; In one of the final games Gerald attended, his grandson Joey Miller pitched a “no hitter,” a proud moment for Grandpa.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Barbara Miller; two children, Richard Miller (Leslee) of McPherson and Amy Fulcher (Chad Haen) of McPherson; &nbsp;grandchildren Ryan Fulcher, Myranda Vera (Carlos), Maggie Miller, Joey Miller, Claire Miller, and Payton Miller; great-grandchildren Ellena Vera and Emery Vera; sister Sharon Bosley of Arlington, TX; and brother Warren Miller (Cathy) of Colorado Springs, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Rebecca Fulcher.

Gerald lived to love and serve his family, church, community, and country. Gerald had too many friends to count and will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

A celebration of Gerald’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 24, at the First Baptist Church.&nbsp; Inurnment, with military honors, will follow at McPherson Cemetery.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday (June 23) at Stockham Family Funeral Home.

Eugene “Harvey” Kalivoda passed away peacefully at age 97 on June 10th, 2022, at the Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center, Kansas. Harvey was born on May 24th, 1925, in Cuba, Kansas to Steve and Mary (Kauer) Kalivoda.

He was one of eight graduates from Cuba High School in 1943. 

Raised on a farm just outside of Cuba, he married Phyllis Morgison of Clifton, Kansas on March 26th, 1947, and moved to Clifton to be owner-manager of the Bi-Low Market IGA Store for 6 years. In 1950, he started with Northern Natural Gas Co. and then in 1966 he began a very successful career as an insurance agent with the Prudential Insurance Company. Retiring from Prudential in 1988, he continued his insurance business as an independent agent well into his 80s.

Harvey was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, older brother Vernon, and parents. 

Harvey is survived by his sons Roger and wife Julie; Rod and wife Cindy; Greg and wife Shannon; five grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

He was a devoted husband of 68 years and a father who wanted the best for his family and friends over the years. As a charitable civic-minded individual, he belonged to the local Lions Club, Elks Club, Clay Center Masonic Lodge #134, and a 32o&nbsp;Scottish Rite mason. One of his pleasures was marching in parades as part of the ISIS Temple Oriental Band of Salina, Kansas and banging on his gong.

The visitation will be held on Monday, June 20th&nbsp;from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center.

Funeral services at the 1st&nbsp;Presbyterian Church on Tuesday June 21st&nbsp;at 10 a.m.

Jean Baker, 82, a lifetime resident in ldana, Kansas was born August 15, 1939, in Clay Center the daughter of Millard Franklin “Pete” and Rachel “Irene” (Hine) Fyfe. She died June 9, 2022 in Topeka, KS.

She attended the ldana Grade School and Clay Center High School. Upon graduation, she worked for Elmer Anderson Law firm for 27 years. Jean then started her own business, Jean Baker Tax Service. She continued to work until 2019, maybe just once or twice a year, as she loved her work and the contact with friends.

In 1957 she married Robert Baker, they later divorced. To this union she had the joy of one daughter, Bobbi Jean.

Jean was a lifelong member of the ldana Presbyterian Church. She always believed she had her own reserved seat. It was her strong faith that carried her through her life.

She loved spending time with family and friends. The family vacation had become a highlight of the summer. She so treasured that time. Oh, how she loved playing cards and winning and that always included visiting and having good food. Jean was definitely a "pillar" of strength and support to her family and friends. She was a good listener but also didn't hesitate to offer advice.

Jean was a loving sister, mother, life partner, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. 

She is survived by her partner and best friend of 47 years, Everett Burt. Also surviving are her three grandchildren-Scott Peterson, Spencer Peterson, Stacey Harding and husband Charles, six great-grandchildren, three sisters- Karen Starkey, Janet Cyre, and Cheryl Hawkinson and husband Jon, nieces and nephews. 

She was proceeded in death by her daughter Bobbi Jean Peterson, her parents, and beloved brother Richard Fyfe.

Brooke was born on December 1, 1989, in Manhattan, KS, to Will and Sylvia (Hoyle) Hollis. 

From an early age, Brooke was very determined and could accomplish anything she set her mind to do.&nbsp; 

She excelled in school and athletics, including basketball and softball.&nbsp; She was a selfless soul who loved horses and all kinds of animals. Brooke graduated in 2008 from Rural Vista (White City, KS) High School. She continued her education at Kansas State University where she earned her bachelor's degree in education and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society. &nbsp;Brooke continued her education at Fort Hays State, earning her master's degree in counseling. She was nearing completion of her doctorate degree and had recently returned to Kansas State as a lecturer, fulfilling one of her long-term goals. 

Brooke was employed by USD 487 Herington, first as a middle school English teacher, then transitioned to teaching high school social science, and then as a mental health liaison.&nbsp; She also coached high school basketball. She had a passion for helping kids in need and all of Brooke’s students held a very special place in her heart.

Brooke married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Michael Gursky, on August 11, 2012, in Abilene, KS. Michael and Brooke were then blessed with three wonderful children: Wyatt, Bryar, and Garrett. She was an incredibly loving and devoted wife and mother, whose greatest joy was her family. Brooke coached the kids in T-Ball and was always enthusiastically cheering them on at football, gymnastics, soccer, wrestling and swimming events.

She is survived by her husband Michael of Herington, KS; children Wyatt, Bryar, and Garrett; parents Will and Sylvia Hollis of Dwight, KS; in-laws Sara Boyce and Michael Anthony of Kansas City, MO and Christopher and Cindy Gursky of Lafayette, LA; grandpa Howard Hollis of Milford, KS; sisters and besties Brittany (James) Jones of Emporia, KS and Bethany (Pete) Husband of East St. Paul, MN; and nephew Zayden and nieces Genevieve, and Penelope;&nbsp; and brother-in-law Ty Suggs of Manhattan.&nbsp;

Brooke was taken from us too soon on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at her home. 

Her family will gather with friends on Friday, June 17 from 5-7 p.m. at the Herington Community Center where her funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest in Dwight Cemetery.

Michael Thomas Charles was born on December 6, 2002, in Salina Kansas to Connie Harzman and Christopher Charles. Michael passed away unexpectedly at his home near Hope, Kansas on June 7, 2022. 

Michael lived most of his life in the Wichita area and graduated from East High School with the Class of 2021. 

He loved and was exceptionally skilled at video games, whether playing with friends for enjoyment or competing in gaming tournaments around Wichita. &nbsp;One of his favorite games was Super Smash Brothers. Michael was gifted in technology and built his own computers. He enjoyed anime, Spiderman, and comic books.&nbsp;&nbsp;Michael was a natural caregiver to people and animals and he was often known to be helping his father or hanging out with his dog Poco. &nbsp;

As a certified nursing assistant at Legacy at Herrington, his care for others was evident in everything he did and he was contemplating starting LPN school.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Michael is survived by his&nbsp;parents,&nbsp;brothers Joshua (Kelly) Harzman, David (Natalie) Harzman, and Xavier Charles, grandmothers Brenda Wendell and Georgia Kay Charles, uncles Mark (Theresa) Wendell, John (Cindy) Charles, aunt Laurie Hickle, and many, many cousins.

 Throughout his nineteen years, Michael touched multiple hearts and was deeply loved by all. 

The family will host a private celebration of Michael’s life June 30th, 2022.&nbsp;

An E-sports scholarship at Wichita State University is being created in his memory. &nbsp;

Joanna Carolina (Mills) Clemence was born August 17, 1931 on the farmstead near Enterprise, Kansas to Joe and Cordelia ( Anderson ) Mills. 

Joanna graduated from Enterprise High School in 1949. She attended Kansas State University for one year. 

On July 9, 1950 she married Joe F. Clemence. She moved to their farm west of Abilene in a community called Sand Springs. They would have celebrated 72 years of marriage on July 9th. Joanna was a housewife, bookkeeper for the farm, and mother of four. 

She also followed Joe to the sale barns he had an investment in. She worked as a bookkeeper and cashier at the old Salina Livestock Sale Barn, the Council Grove Sale Barn, and the Herington Livestock Sale Barn, the Farmers and Ranchers Sale Barn, and Manhattan Livestock Sale Barn. When Joe purchased the Herington Feedlot known as Tri County Feed Yard, she worked as a bookkeeper in the office. On top of that she managed to taxi four kids around.

Joanna was baptized and confirmed at the Enterprise Methodist Church. After she was married, she moved her membership to the First United Methodist Church in Abilene, KS. She volunteered for the Red Cross and as a Gray Lady at the Abilene Memorial Hospital for 28 years and she helped in the ladies’ circle serving meals from the church’s kitchen. She participated in bible studies, the Crusade Sunday School Class, and many church activities. She loved to needlepoint, entertain friends and reading to grandchildren. 

Joanna is survived by her husband, Joe, of the home, one daughter, Teresa I. Clemence of Goodland, Ks., sons Bob and wife Theresa Ann of WaKeeney, KS, Jon and wife Cecilia of Abilene, KS, and Mike and wife Sandy of Abilene, KS, a sister, Kitty Dalton of Salina, KS, seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, a baby sister Doris Jean ( at one week ), brother Leon, and granddaughter Nichole.

Funeral Services for Joanna will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 17, 2022 at the Abilene First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. Family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Danner Funeral Home.

Joanna Clemence

Darlene M. Curry passed away on June 10, 2022,&nbsp;in Salina, Kansas at the age of 84. She was born to Leo and Lola (Benoit) Thibault on May 13, 1938,&nbsp;in Rooks County, Kansas on the family farm near Damar. Darlene was united in marriage to Rex Curry on June 27, 1957,&nbsp;in Osborne, Kansas at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church. The couple was blessed with five children: Kendall, Cheryl,&nbsp;Dale,&nbsp;Mark, and Darren.

Darlene grew up in Osborne where she graduated from Osborne High School in 1956. Following high school,&nbsp;she married Rex,&nbsp;and&nbsp;after the loss of Dale the couple moved from&nbsp;Smith Center&nbsp;to make their&nbsp;home in Plainville, Kansas. Darlene went to work for&nbsp;Travelnol&nbsp;in Hays, Kansas as one of the first and last employees of the business.

Once&nbsp;Travenol&nbsp;relocated,&nbsp;she went to work as head of housekeeping for Redbud Village for several years&nbsp;and then continued to keep busy&nbsp;with odd jobs and&nbsp;her&nbsp;grandchildren.&nbsp;She and Rex were also locally known for their firework stand that helped the community celebrate the 4th&nbsp;of July for 35 years.&nbsp;She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and D of I.

Darlene enjoyed sewing, gardening, and baking. She was&nbsp;known&nbsp;for her pies, and the amount she would bake at a time&nbsp;-&nbsp;18! Her husband even invented a little device to help carry 4 pies at a time.&nbsp;If she wasn’t enjoying time with her family, baking a plethora of pies, Darlene enjoyed testing her luck at casinos or getting away on a camping trip.&nbsp;

As a woman of strong faith and love, her family was second only to God. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but the celebration of her life and memories will forever remain.

Orletta Fern Brandt (Heide) Wiebe went to be with Jesus on June 8, 2022, at the age of 91. 

Orletta enjoyed music (never missing a chance to sing 4-part harmony with friends and family), sports (attending and streaming countless football, basketball and volleyball games), reading (bringing books to share with her grandchildren and also reading to challenge herself) traveling to see family (navigating many road trips with her sister, Joyce), gathering with friends, and sharing her faith in God.

Orletta’s life began on March 25, 1931, at Hillsboro, Kansas, born to William P. and Lillian (Bartel) Brandt. After seven days her mother died, leaving her father with two sons, ages two and three and a newborn (Orletta). She was received and nurtured in the home of Henry H. and Linda (Penner) Bartel until her father married Anna Ewert. Orletta’s new mom was loved dearly by all of her instant family. Soon another son, Franklin, joined the family, but lived only six months. Later three sisters, Pearl, Darlene, and Joyce and a brother John joined the family.&nbsp;

Orletta’s education began at Lehigh, Kansas. Because of family moves, she also attended three different rural schools. At 13 years of age she was baptized and joined the Johannestal Mennonite Church. After graduating from Hillsboro High School she attended Tabor College for one year. It was there that Orletta was challenged to serve as a volunteer under MCC. Her two years of service included one year at the office of the National Service Board for Religious Objectors in Washington, D.C. 

After her second year at MCC in Akron, PA, she entered nurses training at Bethel College and Bethel Deaconess Hospital, graduating in 1957.&nbsp; Her first work experience as a nurse was at Beatrice Mennonite Hospital, Beatrice, NE. Several years later she returned to Newton KS to work at Prairie View Mental Health Center. It was there she met and married Marvin Heide, a Mt. Lake, MN native, on September 4, 1960.

 After living in Mt. Lake for a year, where she worked in the Mennonite Hospital, they moved to Hillsboro, KS, and were blessed with four children: Jerold, Carolyn, Dennis and Kendall. 

During the next 10 years Orletta worked at a clinic and at Salem Hospital in Hillsboro.&nbsp;They lived in Beatrice, NE, from 1972-1974, where Orletta worked in a mental health clinic.&nbsp; In 1973 they moved back to Hillsboro where Marvin became owner and operator of Hillsboro Equipment, Inc. 

They were active members of Trinity Mennonite Church, serving as deacons and youth leaders. Orletta was chosen as the first woman deacon in their church, and with God’s grace, was able to minister along with others. She returned to Prairie View, working in the children’s program.&nbsp;

In 1979 Orletta’s husband, Marvin, passed away from cancer. She became a single mother of an 11, 14, 16 and 17 year-old. A year or so later she began working for the Marion County Health Dept., later becoming the director. She proudly saw all four children graduate from Bethel College.

Through a mutual friend, Orletta was introduced to John Wiebe. John lived and worked in Winnipeg, Manitoba as conference minister in the Conference of Mennonites in Manitoba. Following the leading of their hearts (and a sense of God’s leading) and family support, John and Orletta were married on March 19, 1988. 

The following 22 years Orletta lived in Winnipeg, where she also was received by three stepchildren, Gerald, Barry and Cindy, and one grandchild, Alex. 

There Orletta chose to join the Bethel Mennonite Church, serving in a variety of ways. For a number of years she was in a group that met to pray and contemplate once a week, a very enriching experience which continued to challenge her prayer life.

Orletta was encouraged to enter the pastoral care ministry under the umbrella of the Conference of Mennonites in Manitoba. Following a year of training and classes Orletta served for 10 years in ministering at St. Boniface Hospital.

In 2009, John passed away and Orletta moved back to Kansas, to live at Kidron Bethel Village, joining many friends from her past and gaining many new ones. Living there offered many opportunities to grow spiritually, joining a prayer group and numerous book discussions. Orletta said “Reading, cooking, and traveling were some of my favorite activities. Having been blessed with relatively good health, I daily pray with thankfulness. Great is your faithfulness, God.”

Orletta was preceded in death by her parents William, Lillian (Bartel) and Anna (Ewert) Brandt, two husbands, Marvin Heide and John F. Wiebe, brother Eldon and wife Anny Brandt, sister-in-law Grace (Ewert) Brandt, brothers-in-law Bill Colhoff, John McConnel, sister Darlene and husband Lewis Haney, and brother-in-law Richard Barkman; of the Heide family, Lavina (Heide) and John Wall and Robert Heide. 

Wiebe family predeceased are Henry and Louise Wiebe, Hilda and George Ewert, Ann and Dan Hildebrandt, Ed and Nora Heinrichs, Dave Friesen and stepdaughter, Cynthia Hernandez, Winnipeg.

Orletta is survived by her children&nbsp; Jerold and Donna (Funk) Heide, Wichita, KS, Carolyn and Ray (Henderson), Charlotte, NC, Dennis and Lorna (Innes) Heide, Orlando, FL, and Kendall and Carrie (Dalke) Heide, Wichita, KS, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild, stepsons Gerald Wiebe and Barry Wiebe, four stepgrandsons, and three stepgranddaughters, brothers Raymond and Rosie (Goering), N. Newton, KS, and John and Donita (Chastain) Brandt, Yankton, SD, and sisters Pearl McConnel, Sandpoint, ID and Joyce Barkman, Hillsboro, KS, of the Heide family, Darrel and Susan (Howes) Heide, Highland, CA, Don and Jan (Frank) Heide, Tuscan, AZ, Jerry and Kathy Heide, Colorado Springs, CO, and sister-in-law, Norma Heide, Hutchinson, KS. 

Wiebe survivors are Peter and Rheta Mae Wiebe, Glendale, AZ, Mary (Wiebe) Friesen, Winkler, MB, Jake and Linda (Wiebe) Wall, Abbotsford, BC and Len and Phyllis Wiebe, Winnipeg, also many nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.

Orletta enjoyed music (never missing a chance to sing 4-part harmony with friends and family), sports (attending and streaming countless football, basketball and volleyball games), reading (bringing books to share with her grandchildren and also reading to challenge herself) traveling to see family (navigating many road trips with her sister, Joyce), gathering with friends, and sharing her faith in God. Orletta’s life began on March 25, 1931, at Hillsboro, Kansas, born to William P. and Lillian (Bartel) Brandt. After seven days her mother died, leaving her father with two sons, ages two and three and a newborn (Orletta). She was received and nurtured in the home of Henry H. and Linda (Penner) Bartel until her father married Anna Ewert. Orletta’s new mom was loved dearly by all of her instant family. Soon another son, Franklin, joined the family, but lived only six months. Later three sisters, Pearl, Darlene, and Joyce and a brother John joined the family.&nbsp; Orletta’s education began at Lehigh, Kansas. Because of family moves, she also attended three different rural schools. At 13 years of age she was baptized and joined the Johannestal Mennonite Church. After graduating from Hillsboro High School she attended Tabor College for one year. It was there that Orletta was challenged to serve as a volunteer under MCC. Her two years of service included one year at the office of the National Service Board for Religious Objectors in Washington, D.C. After her second year at MCC in Akron, PA, she entered nurses training at Bethel College and Bethel Deaconess Hospital, graduating in 1957.&nbsp; Her first work experience as a nurse was at Beatrice Mennonite Hospital, Beatrice, NE. Several years later she returned to Newton KS to work at Prairie View Mental Health Center. It was there she met and married Marvin Heide, a Mt. Lake, MN native, on September 4, 1960. After living in Mt. Lake for a year, where she worked in the Mennonite Hospital, they moved to Hillsboro, KS, and were blessed with four children: Jerold, Carolyn, Dennis and Kendall. During the next 10 years Orletta worked at a clinic and at Salem Hospital in Hillsboro.&nbsp;They lived in Beatrice, NE, from 1972-1974, where Orletta worked in a mental health clinic.&nbsp; In 1973 they moved back to Hillsboro where Marvin became owner and operator of Hillsboro Equipment, Inc. They were active members of Trinity Mennonite Church, serving as deacons and youth leaders. Orletta was chosen as the first woman deacon in their church, and with God’s grace, was able to minister along with others. Kenneth “Ken” Meisinger, 80, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at Dennis &amp; Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. 

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 13, 2022, at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. Burial will take place at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Hillsboro, Kansas at later date. Murdoch Funeral Home &amp; Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa is assisting the family. Ken was born on November 9, 1941, in Hillsboro, Kansas, the son of Clifton and Ophelia (Laubhan) Meisinger.

He was a 1959 graduate of Marion High School in Marion, Kansas and went on to graduate from Wichita Business College in 1961. 

Ken moved to Marion, Iowa in 2000. He worked as an insurance agent for American Family Insurance for 22 years. After retirement he worked for Hy-Vee for 12 years, and recently worked for Indian Creek Country Club. Ken was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection and Indian Creek Country Club. He loved to golf in his later years. In his younger years he loved to bowl and play softball. Ken was a kind, loving, and generous man who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Ken is survived by his brothers Marvin (Maggie) Meisinger of Marion, Kansas, and Edward (Jan) Meisinger of Hillsboro, Kansas; special friends Jim and Janet Dettbarn and Barry and Jolene Buchholz, all of Marion, Iowa; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Carl “Tom” Nelson, age 86, died in Manhattan, KS on June 8, 2022.&nbsp; He was born June 13, 1935, in rural Woodston, KS to Carl and Rausa (Hale) Nelson.&nbsp; 

Tom graduated from Alton High School in 1953. He stayed in the Alton area for a time, later moving to Clay Center and working as a manager for Orscheln’s for several years. 

He married Betty Wright on October 14, 1989; she precedes him. 

Tom was the owner and operator of Tom’s Feed in Clay Center until his retirement in 2020.&nbsp; He was a member of the Clay Center Wesleyan Church, and a former board member of the school and township when in living in Alton. Tom enjoyed flower gardening and had a large plot of various irises in Alton. He downsized but continued his passion when he moved to Clay Center. 

&nbsp;In addition to his wife, Tom is preceded in death by parents and siblings John Michler, Melvia Paulson, Margaret Woods, and Bill Nelson.

He is survived by his sons Dorin Nelson of Marquette, KS and Darin (Teresa) Nelson of Galva, KS as well as six stepchildren; brother Sheldon Nelson of Salina, KS; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many stepgrandchildren along with several nieces and nephews

Nancy’s life began on July 1, 1960, in Junction City. She was the daughter of Frank T. and JoAnn (Hansen) Shope. 

Nancy was a 1978 graduate of White City (Rural Vista) High School. 

She worked for the IGA, now Barnes Grocery, in Herington as a cook and baker for many years and loved to bake. Nancy enjoyed sewing and watching old westerns on TV. She was an avid music lover and enjoyed her family. 

Her loving family includes her mother JoAnn Shope of White City; children Richard Yarbrough of White City, Tanya Egbert of Council Grove, and Brenda (Jeremy) Domme of Topeka; grandchildren Samantha and Harmony; siblings Charles (Vickie) Shope of White City, Karen Clark of Lawton, OK, Calvin (Gina) Shope of Manhattan and several nieces and nephews. 

Nancy passed away on Sunday June 12, 2022, at Morris County Hospital in Council Grove.

 She is preceded in death by her father Frank and brother Carl Shope. 

Her family will gather with friends on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Yazel Megli Funeral Home, Herington. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Junction City. Nancy will be laid to rest in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, White City.
