Salina Police were called to a south Salina motel early this morning for the report of a domestic incident.

According to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus, officers were dispatched to the Rodeway Inn and Suites, 3932 South Ninth Street, at 4:43 a.m. Thursday after a bloodied female guest ask a motel employee to call the police.

The 31-year-old Salina woman said she had been strangled and beaten about the face, Hanus said. She had injuries consistent with her report, he added.

James Anderton, 28, of Salina, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated domestic battery, Hanus said.

Salina Police have identified the body found in Sunset Park on Jan. 21 as that of a 67-year-old man from Tescott.

Police were called to Sunset Park, 700 Sunset Drive, at 2:20 p.m. Jan. 21 after a park employee found the body in a white Ford pickup with an Ottawa County license plate. An area at the south end of the park, near the water tower, was cordoned off, and for a brief time, police had park entrances blocked.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that although police are awaiting autopsy results, they do not believe anyone else was involved in the death.

A 34-year-old Salina man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated domestic battery after an incident late Wednesday night.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that officers were dispatched to the 200 block of North Penn Avenue at 11:25 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a domestic disturbance. There they made contact with the male and a 36-year-old female who had injuries consistent with being strangled, Hanus said. The woman lived at the North Penn Avenue residence, while the male did not and had been asked to leave several times, he added.

Ryan McElroy, 34, of Salina, was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hanus said.

Aggravated domestic battery for impeding breathing

The woman drove herself to Salina Regional Health Center for an examination, Hanus said.

Kansas Wesleyan’s DECA team will look for another quality performance Monday, when the squad heads to Hillsboro for the annual state competition. 

The 16-student Coyote squad will face off against teams from around the Sunflower State, including Fort Hays State, Ottawa University, Tabor College and others in the competition that involves case studies and business-related presentations of various types.

KWU’s DECA team, coached by Brylee New '17, is in its third year of existence and nearly tripled its state medal count last year, going from 11 in 2018 to 32 last year. The Coyotes return 10 students from a squad that advanced 12 to the national competition in 2019.

“Our team has been working very hard,” said New. “Our goal is for everyone to get a medal, as that can help demonstrate that all the hard work the students have put into learning and preparing for this event was worth it.”

“I believe that one of the unique things about DECA is that, because of its very nature, it can bring teammates from different backgrounds and majors closer together,” offered New. “This is such a unique event because you have to work together and present solutions together. It can help form bonds that you just cannot find elsewhere.”

DECA, formerly known as the Distributive Education Clubs of America, was founded in 1946 and lists its goal as&nbsp;preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Its methods include numerous competitive events, including business-related competitions such as the Feb. 3 Kansas meet, where teams will compete in individual case studies, team (duo) case studies and prepared business presentations, which can involve written reports on a business or advertising campaign.

WICHITA -- Wichita State University has selected the top 14 finalists in the annual Distinguished Scholarship Invitational (DSI).

The students competed in DSI in November with 656 total students competing – the largest in DSI history. Three of the finalists will be selected as recipients of the Harry Gore Memorial $64,000 scholarships, which are among the largest undergraduate awards in the Midwest.

To be invited to compete in the invitational, students had to have a 27 or higher ACT score, or a 3.5 or higher GPA, or rank in the top 10% of their class. The 14 finalists this year have an average ACT score of 28 and average GPA of 3.93.

Once invited, students completed an application, including essays and competed in an on-campus leadership competition.

The announcement of the Gore Scholars will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday in the Marcus Welcome Center. All finalists will receive competitive scholarship packages to attend WSU in the fall of 2020.

Central student among WSU Distinguished Scholarship Invitational finalists

TOPEKA — Winners of the&nbsp;Happy Birthday, Kansas! Student Photo Contest received prizes on Wednesday&nbsp;at the Kansas State Capitol in celebration of Kansas’ 159th birthday.

Governor Laura Kelly presented awards to the winners from first through 12th grades. First place in each grade received an iPad and second place a Kindle. Marearl Denning, represented the legislative spouses who sponsor the contest, now in its sixth year, in conjunction with the Kansas Historical Society.

The statewide contest invited students to shoot photographs based on the theme "Going to School in Kansas" throughout the state in 2019. Photographs from the 24 winners will be on display in the Capitol visitor center through Feb. 5, and online at <a href="http://kshs.org/18622">kshs.org/18622</a>.

MARION COUNTY -- A series of earthquakes has shaken parts of eastern Marion County the past couple of days, according to information from the Kansas Geological Survey.

All of the earthquakes were centered northeast of the City of Marion

The most recent quake, a magnitude 2.5 temblor that struck at 7:04 p.m. Wednesday, was just north of 220th Street about halfway between Zebulon Road and Alfalfa Road.

A 3.4 magnitude quake struck at 5:19 p.m. Wednesday a bit further north of 220th Street between Alfalfa Road and Bluestem Road.

At 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, a 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck. It was centered a bit south of 220th Street, just to the west of Alfalfa Road.

Shortly before, at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, a 3.3 magnitude temblor was centered just north of the 12:05 a.m. Wednesday quake, just south of 220th Street and just west of Alfalfa Road.

KDOT: Salina included in airport improvement projects

Salina Area Technical College's automotive program is getting a new vehicle, thanks in part to Long McArthur.

According to a news release from Long McArthur, the longtime Salina dealership and the Ford Motor Company are donating a Ford Focus to Salina Tech.

Marcus Hicks, Ford regional technical talent placement specialist said, "Service Manager Jonathan Maestas has done an excellent job building a relationship with Thomas Conway and the Salina Area Tech automotive program. I'm thankful to North McArthur, West McArthur, and Derek Lee for supporting this effort."

"We live in a growing region, and we are serving more vehicles than ever. With the need for vehicle maintenance and repairs increasing, we will need to hire more technicians. Salina Area Technical College provides a world-class program that results in excellent wages. We are proud to partner with them," said Lee, Long McArthur general manager. 

The presentation/news conference at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Salina Tech Automotive Building, 2562 Centennial Road, is open to the public.

Police are investigating a Tuesday burglary in north Salina that included the theft of a .22 caliber handgun.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that sometime between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., someone forced entry through the back door of a residence in the 700 block of West Woodland Avenue, causing $400 in damage. 

Items belonging to a 22-year-old female and a 48-year-old male that were taken include the following, Hanus said.

Prescription medication for an animal valued at $10

A black Walther PPK handgun valued at $300

A number of DVDs and videos valued at $50

Hanus said that police are conducting a neighborhood canvass to see whether anyone saw anything suspicious during the time that the burglary occurred. He said that one witness reported seeing a suspicious subject in the neighborhood at the time.

The next town hall meeting concerning the Saline County Jail Project is&nbsp; Thursday night.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the Stevens Center of the St. Johns/St. Francis campus, 110 W. Otis. The meeting is open to the public.

Space and program needs will be discussed and conceptual ideas will be viewed.

Additional town hall meeting dates have been set for Feb. 27 and March 19, with times and locations to be determined.

Information on the jail project can be found on the Saline County website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.saline.org/">www.saline.org</a>&nbsp;under the “2020 Jail Project” tab.

Additionally, an

Police are investigating the reported theft of $2,000 worth of coins from an east-central Salina residence.

A 34-year-old Salina man reported to police that sometime between 7-7:30 a.m. Tuesday, someone stole a bucket and pig bank filled with $2,000 worth of United States coins from a residence in the 800 block of Beatrice Street, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning. There were no signs of forced entry, Hanus said.

The investigation continues in the case as police follow up on a possible suspect, he added.

A civics teacher once simplified the idea of politics for me to the action of deciding who gets what and how much. This fundamental idea of dividing resources should be a concern to everyone but politics has become a subject many people avoid. The average citizen could probably provide a dozen reasons why they are not interested or involved in the political process.

However, legislators need to hear our voices to make the right choices. I occasionally have the opportunity to bring new people to the statehouse for legislative visits. It always makes me happy to see the look of surprise and a bit of panic on their faces when a legislator asks their opinion about an important issue. The surprise usually turns to respect when they realize that the lawmaker genuinely values their input.

Politicians have an obligation to represent their constituents, and it is difficult to do well if citizens do not share their thoughts and opinions. The saying, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” reflects a fundamental truth of the ability of every member of our society to engage in the political process. Your contribution can be as simple and powerful as making elected officials aware of important issues so they can take action.

So why don’t people speak up more? The power politicians possess can be intimidating, and people often feel insignificant on their own. Remembering politicians are citizens just like you and finding strength in a group or organization can help to make engaging in the political process more comfortable.

Growing up, my friend’s mom was a state representative who balanced her career with all kinds of mom duties like being a 4-H leader and attending local basketball games. At the time, I had no comprehension of the prestige or power of her job. My first-hand experience, that elected officials are real people with families, personal lives and everyday concerns, is a source connection and confidence during my interactions with legislators.

The other source of my political confidence has grown out of involvement in Kansas Farm Bureau. When I moved here a decade ago, I was starting from scratch without a network of contacts or political connections. Joining Farm Bureau gave me expert resources to explain the process, gain background knowledge and sharpen my communication skills. Farm Bureau also provided contacts to build my network and the ability to stand together with others who cared about the same issues. Joining an organization that shares your values and concerns is a great way to start engaging in advocacy.

The Kansas Legislature is in session now, and it is a great time to visit with your representatives. If you can’t make the trip to Topeka, plan to attend a town hall in your area or send a note about an issue that matters to you. You might be surprised by how quickly a legislator learns your name if you get involved or reach out to share your opinions.

Politicians control the resources of our state and nation. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that your opinion doesn’t matter. Legislatures are real people who want to represent you well. Help them by letting them know what issue matter to you and your community.
