City seeks volunteers for boards, commissions

As a local youth baseball coach, Jason Wells has seen families struggle to support their child’s love of the game, due to the rising cost of youth sports.

“Equipment, uniforms, league fees and tournament fees can make baseball an expensive youth sport,” said Wells. “Our team does whatever it can to keep costs reasonable, yet there has always been a significant fee per player to participate.”

This issue is not new. In 2000, longtime youth baseball coach Larry Britegam wanted to help families who struggle with the financial demands of organized sports, so he established the Youth Baseball Fund at the Greater Salina Community Foundation. This fund, along with the community foundation’s Sunflower Softball Fund, provides support for local youth who want to participate in baseball or softball but are limited by a lack of funds. Grants may be used to cover registration fees, tournament fees, equipment, uniforms and clinics.

“This fund truly has an impact on the kids that love baseball and need some financial help to participate,” Wells said. “While most of these kids will never earn a baseball scholarship, they may create experiences and friendships they will remember the rest of their lives.”

Since the baseball and softball funds were started, 190 young baseball and softball players in the Salina area have received a combined total of $50,881.30.

“I would like to thank all those who put forth the time and money to keep this fund going,” Wells said. “Thanks for helping kids in Salina have an opportunity to be a part of these teams.”

This season, more than $8,000 is available for baseball and $2,000 is available for softball. Applications open Saturday, with deadlines of Feb. 15, March 15, April 15 and May 15, 2020. Funding will be awarded on a first come, first served basis and decisions will be announced after each grant deadline. Smoky Valley announces its Sweetheart Court

The KWU debate and forensics team traveled to St. Louis, Mo. to compete at the 90th annual Gorlok Gala at Webster University Jan. 24–26.

In debate, the team of Cassity Morlan (Kechi) and Dallas McMillen (Manchester) went 5-0 in the preliminary rounds of open parliamentary debate. They advanced to the quarterfinals, placing fourth. The team of Madi Mitchell (Mulvane) and Abby Wray (Wichita) finished third in junior varsity (JV) parliamentary debate after advancing to the semifinals. Individually, Morlan was second in the open parliamentary debate speaker awards, while Wray finished 10th&nbsp;overall in parliamentary debate at the JV level.

In other events, Morlan was sixth in prose interpretation, while Mitchell advanced to the semifinals of impromptu speaking and was awarded top novice in communication analysis.

KWU debate and forensics competes in St. Louis

Throughout February, the Salina Regional Health Foundation is sponsoring a "Pennies from the Heart for the Home with a Heart" campaign to increase awareness and support for the Rebecca A. Morrison House.

The public is invited to bring spare change or money in any denomination to the Morrison House, 513 South Eighth Street during daytime hours, according to a news release from the foundation. Staff will gladly give tours of the home to anyone interested.

Additional collection points for donations to the campaign also have been established in the main lobbies of Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) and the Tammy Walker Cancer Center (TWCC).

The Morrison House serves as a home away from home for people from outside Salina who have a loved one as a patient at SRHC. Cancer patients from around the region receiving outpatient treatment at TWCC also stay at the Morrison House.

There is no charge for guests to stay at the Morrison House. The service is supported entirely by donations.

Since it opened in 1993, more than 25,000 guests have stayed at the Morrison House from 443 Kansas communities, 48 states, and 18 foreign countries. The Morrison House is owned and operated by the foundation in partnership with the Salina Regional Service Auxiliary.

 AAA Kansas is urging all football fans to call the right play this weekend by passing the keys to a sober driver before the big game – and drinking -- begins.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) tracks crash statistics on Super Bowl weekend. From 2013 to 2017, during the 78-hour reporting period surrounding the big game, there were an average of 31 alcohol-related crashes, resulting in an average of 1.2 fatalities,11 injuries and 18 instances of property damage only each year. According to KDOT statistics from 2017, the most recent official data available, 90 people were killed on Kansas roads in alcohol-related crashes for the entire year, accounting for 19.5% of all crash fatalities.

“Drinking and driving is not a game – it’s a deadly combination and a crime – both of which are 100 percent preventable,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “Make your winning drive a sober one and designate a driver&nbsp;before&nbsp;you indulge in game day spirits. Don’t fumble when it comes to safety.”

“You can be your party’s MVP by volunteering to help your family and friends get home safely,” Steward added. “Drunk and drugged driving only leads to disaster and tragedy, and is never worth the risk. If you do plan to drink or use drugs, remember to pass the keys to the sober driver before kickoff.”

AAA Kansas urges party hosts to celebrate safely with these tips:

Ask guests to pre-plan for a designated driver who will enjoy delicious mocktails you provide and drive the group home. Visit&nbsp;<a href="http://AAA.com/mocktail">AAA.com/mocktail</a>&nbsp;for festive, alcohol-free drink options.

Collect all drivers' keys in a bowl when guests arrive and monitor the sobriety of guests as they leave.

Mix drinks yourself; avoid open bars. Limit mixing drinks with carbonated beverages; they increase alcohol absorption.

Close your bar 90 minutes before your party is over. Don't offer, "one for the road."

Only TIME can make guests sober- not coffee or cold showers. It takes about 1 hour to burn off an average drink, 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or 1 ½ ounces of liquor. They all contain about the same amount of alcohol.

Designate someone who's not drinking to assess guests when they are ready to leave and make sure they are not intoxicated. The 'roadwise' host is in charge of the bowl of keys and hands them out only to those who aren't showing signs of intoxication.

Guests who are sleepy, giddy, overly talkative or uncoordinated are under the influence. Arrange rides for them or invite them to sleep over. If guests get irate, 'hide' their keys until they find a ride home.

AAA: Call the right play for Sunday's big game

On Jan. 25, 2020, at approximately 4:47 p.m., officers were sent to Walmart, 2900 South Ninth Street in Salina in regard to a shoplifting in progress. 

While proceeding to Walmart, the officers were advised the two people involved in the reported crime entered a white four-door Dodge Avenger. The subjects attempted to leave the parking lot and struck a parked car. The subjects exited the parking lot and fled northbound on Interstate 135 (I-135). 

The involved subjects were stopped near the junction of I-135&nbsp;and Interstate 70 (I-70). When officers approached the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle fled traveling eastbound on I-70 at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The pursuit was terminated out of concern for the public’s safety. 

One of the occupants was previously identified; however, Salina Police are seeking to identify the other occupant. She is described as a white female, early to mid-20s, brown hair, with a tattoo near her right temple. The tattoo may be a rose.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about shoplifting suspect

MANHATTAN – Kansas State University’s Department of Animal Sciences and Industry will host the 107th annual Cattlemen’s Day on March 6 in Weber Hall.

Lorna Marshall, the vice president of beef programs for Ohio-based Select Sires, Inc., will speak at 10 a.m. on genetic and reproductive trends in the global beef industry. Then, Derrell Peel, an extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, will discuss opportunities for the beef industry in global meat markets.

“We are excited to host Cattlemen’s Day,” said Ken Odde, professor and Cattlemen’s Day co-chair. “Our annual program strives to address key issues and to provide current information that keeps our industry efficient and relevant. This year’s main program speakers (Marshall and Peel) will challenge attendees to think outside the box as they address global protein supplies, trade, reproductive and genetic technologies and their effects on the U.S. beef industry.”

The day starts at 8 a.m. with refreshments, educational exhibits and a commercial trade show. “This year we have more than 75 participants signed up for our allied industry trade show,” Odde said. “The trade show provides a forum for the attendees to observe what’s new in the beef industry and network with key industry leaders.”

The cost to attend Cattlemen’s Day is $25 if paid by February 28 at noon, or $35 at the&nbsp;door. There is no charge for students who pre-register. Marshall, Peel highlight Cattlemen’s Day March 6

CONCORDIA -- The Dane G. Hansen Foundation recently established a $100,000 medical scholarship fund with Cloud County Community College’s Nursing Department.

The scholarship is administered by the college, and 12 students were awarded $7,500 scholarships for the 2019-2020 school year. The scholarship recipients are:

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation aspires to enhance the quality of life throughout rural communities in northwest Kansas. The Foundation strongly supports the continuing education of rural community members, and will award scholarships to those who are willing to work in the 26 county service area of northwest Kansas upon graduation. Those who receive this scholarship must be currently enrolled in the CCCC nursing program. The scholarship will cover tuition, fees, books, and some miscellaneous expenses.

“We are so grateful for the opportunity to receive the student scholarship fund from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.” said Stefanie Perret MSN.RN, Nursing Department Administrator. “This gift supports the Nursing Departments mission of educating life-long learners to practice professional nursing and provide safe effective care to the communities they serve.”

ABILENE -- Two Abilene residents were arrested Monday in connection to an alleged drug case.

According to the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department, the department's Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) on Monday executed a search warrant at a residence in the 1500 block of North Campbell Street in Abilene after an approximate two-week investigation stemming from anonymous tips.

During the search of the residence, the DEU found  marijuana and drug paraphernalia, the sheriff's department noted. Additionally, two people from Abilene were arrested at the residence: Colby Taylor Mohn, 18, and Samantha Cheyenne Jean Ramp-Davis, 24, according to information from the sheriff's department.

Both Mohn and Ramp-Davis were arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, the sheriff's department noted.

The case is ongoing and additional arrests are possible, according to the sheriff's department.

On Jan. 23, at around 10:35 p.m., the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office and EMS were dispatched to 104 W. Olds Ave. in Holyrood, Kan. after a resident called 911 reporting an unconscious man who had been outside and exposed to the weather for an extended period of time. EMS transported the man, later identified as John O. Glenn III, 56, of Great Bend, to an area hospital. Glenn died in the early morning hours of Jan. 24.

An autopsy was conducted and the preliminary autopsy results raised concerns that he may have died under suspicious circumstances. On Jan. 30, the KBI and the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office conducted several search warrants in Ellsworth County related to the investigation.

Sunset Elementary students complete drive for food bank

Salina County plans to close a part of North Simpson Road for drainage structure work.

According to information from the county Road and Bridge Department, North Simpson Road between Campbell Road and East Humbargar Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Friday for replacement of a crossroad drainage structure. Weather permitting, the roadway will be opened by the end of May 2020, the information noted.

Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

 </figure>Salina County plans to close a part of North Simpson Road for drainage structure work.According to information from the county Road and Bridge Department, North Simpson Road between Campbell Road and East Humbargar Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Friday for replacement of a crossroad drainage structure. Weather permitting, the roadway will be opened by the end of May 2020, the information noted.Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.
